Davao, Indon tourism schools ink partnership
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE first ever academic partnership between two tourism schools in the Bimp-Eaga (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines-East Asean Growth Area) will be signed Monday.

The Joji Ilagan Foundation, College of Business and Tourism will be signing a Memorandum of Partnership with the Makassar Tourism Academy in Ujung Pandang, Indonesia.

The signing of the memorandum will be formalized Monday at the NCCC Convention Center in Matina at 2 p.m. during the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) program organized for the arrival of Secretary Augusto Syjuco.

The agreement will bring about closer cooperation and exchanges between the academic and tourism sector of Mindanao and Makassar in Indonesia.

The partnership is also an indication of the private sector's support to the business initiatives resulting from the dynamism of the Bimp-Eaga.

Traffic board, agency dialog on franchise row set
By Grace L. Plata

THE firm, which applied for a Calinan franchise without going through the Traffic Management and Control Board (TMCB) requirements, turned out to have also applied for a Toril franchise.

The TMCB, chaired by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and co-chaired by City Administrator Wendel Avisado, should be the first agency to receive a copy of the application based on protocol.

TMCB would then forward the application to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), the sole agency to issue franchises, after consultations with transport groups have been made.

A document from the LTFRB-Southern Mindanao showed that All Aboard Transport Services Inc., managed by Michael Zurita, has applied for a permit for its 20 vans to ply the Toril-Bankerohan route.

TMCB Secretary Alfredo Pontillo said his sources revealed that the same firm is applying for the operation of over 60 vans -- 20 for the Calinan-Bankerohan route, another 20 for the Toril-Bankerohan route, and 20 more for the Ulas-Bakerohan route.

Pontillo added that his sources did not get a copy of the Ulas-Bankerohan application because LTRFB authorities allegedly refused to furnish them with the document.

Pontillo's source said a part owner of the company is an influential businessman in the city who has made the speedy accommodation of the application possible.

However, LTFRB is scheduled to meet with the TMCB and transport groups to straighten things out.

Pontillo said transport groups were supposed to stage a protest rally last week had LTFRB not soothed matters by assuring them that there would be a dialogue to address the issue.

Pontillo said a TMCB meeting on December 7 at the City Hall is expected to discuss, clear, and resolve the issue

Davao: Tourist Paradise
by Joel Bauca

I have to admit, i’m always hesitant to go to Davao, mainly because it’s in Mindanao, wherein there are Abu Sayyafs, NPAs, MILFs, and MNLFs are almost synonymous to Mindanao. As we all know, Mindanao is like a “killing field” of the Philippines. I have never-ever imagined that i will visit any place in Mindanao.

Since my brother, Jayson, is spending just 3 weeks here in the Philippines (he’s working in China), it’s a must that we should maximize his short stay. He was actually scheduled to have his 3-week vacation sometime in April, but his Boss denied his vacation leave, he opted to take an early vacation. Our original plan is to have a family vacation in either Hong Kong or Singapore, but we have to opt for alternative plan due to his early vacation. Our only viable alternative is to have a local trip to a resort here in the Philippines. After several phone calls to Palakbayan personnel, we have selected Pearl Farm Beach Resort, which is located in Davao.

I really didn’t know what to expect in this Davao trip. I had already envisioned that i could meet some soldiers in APCs along the airport and roads, lots of checkpoint and military soldiers are scattered in the streets. Well, I was WRONG.

Davao International Airport was really an “international airport”. The airport can be compared to the Centennial 2 Airport here in Manila. It’s even better than the “old” NAIA International Airport. Though, there were military soldiers, i was shocked when i didn’t see any APC (not like in Dipolog). We have also visited the city proper of Davao, and the city is very clean, and there is no traffic! The Davaoenos we met along were very courteous and polite. Just seeing a clean Davao City justifies that this is one of the beautiful cities in the Philippines.

Our Pearl Farm Beach Resort adventure was AWESOME! I would personally call it the “perfect paradise” in the Philippines. The country-side tour, wherein we visited the city proper, souvenir, durian and suha (pomelo) shopping, Philippine Eagle Breeding Center, and Crocodile Park, was also a great experience.

Visiting and exploring Davao definitely changes the “picture” of Mindanao in my mind. At least, i can now say that Davao is truly a tourist paradise!

Davao provinces are top banana producers
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE regional office of Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) reported that three provinces in Davao Region are the top banana-producing provinces in the country in the last five years.

Data obtained from BAS showed that Compostela Valley Province, Davao del Norte, and Davao del Sur occupied the top three spots as the highest producers of banana from 2000 to 2005.

Compostela Valley produced a total of 952,194 metric tons of banana from the year 2000 to 2005, 899,402 metric tons were produced by Davao del Norte, while a total of 523,288 metric tons were produced by Davao del Sur.

Meanwhile, Davao City was seventh in the list with a total of 183,364 metric tons.

Other provinces in the country that produced banana (according to rank) are: North Cotabato, which is next to Davao del Sur, Lanao del Norte, Maguindanao, Davao City, Oriental Mindoro, South Cotabato, and Bukidnon.

Mindanao has the highest produced banana for the last five years with 4,843,032 metric tons followed by Luzon with 787,688 metric tons, and the Visayas with 667,505 metric tons.

In terms of banana plantation area, Davao del Norte posted to have the largest banana plantation in the country with a total of 26,226 hectares. Compostela Valley Province was listed in the third spot with 18,291 hectares. Davao del Sur was ranked ninth in the list with 12,560.

MTS presents Christmas Tableau

MATINA Town Square once again shares the Spirit of the Season as it continues the tradition of presenting the 5th Christmas Tableau entitled "Pagkakaisang Paskong Pag-alay ng MTS." It was launched on Saturday.

Together with Mindanawon Tribes, MTS is joyfully celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ as depicted in neo-ethnic Nativity Scene.

From the Holy Family in the manger, the three Kings with their valued offerings, onto the various musicians bursting with song and dance -- all in unity and merriment, symbolic of MTS commitment in the promotion and continuous support of authentic Mindanawon art, music and culture.

Other activities at MTS:

Caroling at the Park

MTS spreads the Holiday cheer with friends as it presents Christmas "Caroling at the Park" every weekend, beginning December 1 and every night from December 16 until the 23rd at 6 p.m.

Enjoy the crisp December air with family and friends as guest musicians serenade you with Christmas tunes at the MTS Tent.

Also watch out for fresh batch of performers on December 18-23.

MTS also invites all shoppers to its Christmas Bazaar at the Tent, every evening beginning December 4 up to the 30th, where one may rummage through various bargain items on sale and find unique gift ideas at rock-bottom prices.

Sherad to lead judges in Mindanao filmfest
Published : 2006-12-04

AWARD-winning Davaoeño filmmaker Sherad Anthony Sanchez will lead this year's roster of judges in the Mindanao Film Festival. Director Sanchez’s latest film, Huling Balyan ng Buhi, swept the recent ABS-CBN's Cinema One film festival, taking home the coveted best picture, best director, best screenplay, and special jury citation for best ensemble acting.

"Definitely, Sanchez's participation in the judging of our local films is a plus factor," said Dax Cañedo, organizer of the weeklong Mindanao filmfest which opened last night at Gaisano Mall of Davao Cinema 4. It will run until December 10. The 21-year-old director is from Buhangin but currently studying at Ateneo de Manila University.

Also in the panel of judges are Davaoeño director Drei Boquiren who is getting national recognition for his work Ang Hele ni Guima which is part of the anthology Guimaras: Short Films from the Oil Spill, and Yam Palma, a UP Film Institute graduate who has worked in a number of independent films. The two other judges are yet to be selected.

The five-member panel will judge the six entries in this year's Mindanao Film Festival produced by the fourth Guerilla Filmmaking workshops participants and a mix of Guerilla alumni and mass communications students. They will vie for the awards - best picture, director, actor, actress, screenplay, cinematography, sound, musical scoring, editing, and production value. Also at stake is the people’s choice award.

Getting an early buzz for the December 9 awarding is Asa Ka Adto Pedring? (Where Will You Go My Son, Pedring?) directed by GMA reporter John Paul Seniel whose maiden film Torture swept the very first Guerilla filmmaking competition in 2003. Saniel's second film, Tandog Sa Baryo Sanghay, was also the major winner in the Puting Tabil Digital Short Film Festival in 2005 and his third work was the featured film in last year's Mindanao Film Festival.

In his latest work, Seniel narrated a story of a truant boy who hates his parents, the town midwife mother and his mute-deaf father, for their awful condition. But the work of Nae Ann Espinel is also giving a competition. Espinel, two-time winner in the documentary section (participated in by students) of the Mindanao Film Festival, offers Marsokwatro (Fourth of March), a story inspired by the March 4, 2003 Davao airport bombing which killed 21 people and injured more than a hundred.

Michael Patrick Limbaga, a product of the previous Guerilla Filmmaking competition, also submitted Mukha which is a story of a hard-working gay who struggles to live up to his responsibility of being a good son in the midst of hardships bought about by poverty in a world that ridicules his gender. Also in the competition are Badjao by Alberto Egot, Tulak by Jericho Topacio, and Matris by Dennis Ocier.

Badjao tells about an ambitious young Badjao who disassociates himself from his ethnicity until an event leads him to realize his self-worth. Tulak is about an illegal drug pusher whose spiraling life of crime catches up with him, endangering the lives of his loved ones. Matris acquaints us with young girl whose source of living is giving baby to other couples.

City to donate P1M for typhoon Reming victims

THE City Government of Davao is donating P1 million to the victims of typhoon Reming in the Bicol region.

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte had asked Councilor Amilbangsa Manding last Monday to sponsor a bill to enable the city to donate money to the typhoon victims.

"I have decided to withdraw money from our calamity fund and donate P1 million to the typhoon victims. Maybe in cash and I will probably give it through Red Cross or whatever entity the council decides," Duterte said.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo declared a state of national calamity Sunday as the top Red Cross official estimated more than 1,000 people have been killed after a massive typhoon unleashed walls of black mud on entire villages.

At present the Red Cross has recorded a death toll of at least 406, with 398 others missing, based on figures provided by mayors of devastated towns in the eastern Philippines, where Typhoon Reming hit with winds of up to 265 kph and torrential rains on Thursday.

Arroyo declared a state of national calamity, allowing the government to more rapidly release funds needed to bolster search and rescue efforts.

She ordered the budget department to release P1 billion for the relief and rehabilitation of areas ravaged by successive super typhoons Milenyo, Paeng, and Reming.

see those billboard structures? karon, eyesore na pud sya. kay kung nganong gitugutan sa gobyerno nga patong-patong ang mga billboards. wala ba gyud na nila mahibal-an nga delikado kaayo na. simple lang kaayo nga analogy - the bigger the billboard, the greater the wind drag, well, pwedeng luparon, hehehe. pwedeng tabanog.

I always browse the different city threads in this forum. But I only post and interact at Cebu thread.

But this time, I will post here because of this picture of Tagum Doctors Hospital along hi-way 54 Tagum City which brings back a lot of memories of me and my wife during the time that we're still lovers and friends.

My ex-gf who's my wife now used to work here for 2 years before she moved here in Cebu last 2004 to be with me and work at Cebu Doctors University Hospital. Our lovers nest is just on the right side of this edifice. She's renting a room, and I usually visits her 4 times in a year until the time we decided to get married in 2005 at her hometown in Bohol.

It's a long love story. I just have to end it. Thank you for posting this picture of TDH.

We're planning to visit Tagum City, Davao del Norte in the future in order to reminisce things with our children.

Those traffic lights really bring Davao's urbanity up a couple of notches. And Loi and Jude are right, those new street signs bring a "first world" feel to the city...Now if they can only work on the rusty GI sheet rooftops one can espy from the taller buildings...then pave the sidewalks and lay new asphalt

Thanks for the latest round of pictures, Tomtacks...

Hala, na saag na..:bash:

JB

Hello Jon,

Yes the same goes from me for Tomtacks. I wish he never gets tired clicking his cam for crisp pics for this thread.

I agree, the city is inching towards higher urbanity with those spanking new traffic lights. I know the city gov't could do more by training their sights this time on dilapidated roads and those unsightly spaghetti of wires.

ayos lang sir vic, xmas is in the air na pod dri, how bout canada?

agree ko bout the new traffic lights, from matina area approaching quimpo feeling gyud nako morag naa ko sa ubang country hehe. next stop para completo, fresh asphalt then underground cables and wires :) not too much to ask.

regarding marco polo, naga wonder gyud ko why this structure lords over landco, never really scrutinized its height till now, it's has 21 floor divisions from outside! as you've said meron pa itong 2 level basement.
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f142/kododoy/marcoxmas.jpg

at least in mindanao we got a 21 storey high structure, that is, marco polo.

merry christmas guys!

You're right sir Junax (balos ko! hehe), christmas is in the air. Lately we had snow storm in Vancouver and the whole of British Columbia and I witnessed the unfolding of a white christmas in wherever direction I looked. The trees turned into virtual christmas trees in no time at all. It was so fleeting though coz after a week of snow the great meltdown set in. Now, we're back to almost normal drizzly, overcast skies everyday.

Yes, Marco Polo is 21 storey high minus the basements.

Davao’s biz to remain robust
By Rizalene P. Acac

DAVAO region will maintain its robust economy in the incoming year after Mayor Rodrigo Duterte favored the retention of aerial spraying as an agricultural practice, Atty. Bienvenido Cariaga, outgoing city chamber president said. He said the region registered a “very good” climate for the year claiming that it has the highest Regional Gross Domestic Product in all the regions in Mindanao.

Based on the figures of the city chamber and the Regional Tripartite Wage and Productivity Board, the number one product of the region is cavendish banana produced by plantations here. He said coconut follows at a wide margin while rice and corn competes for the third place.

Cariaga said he has learned that the mayor will not ban aerial spraying on the third week of October when the chief executive met with the top officials of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. He said the mayor has the final say on the agricultural practice.

“When the mayor makes the announcement, who among the councilors would say that the mayor is wrong,” he said. Cariaga said banana growers could have a net income of P 200,000 per annum for every hectare compared to coconut or rice production. He said rice, the primary agricultural product of the region before could only yield a net of P 50,000 per annum for every hectare.

He also noted that the membership of the chamber for this year grew by 25 percent; from 318 members to 384. Cariaga said it is an indication that the business community recognizes the importance of affiliating with prestigious business organizations and that businesses are “progressing because the economy here is good.”

He also said that the region has the highest wages for workers all throughout the island. In Davao City, Digos, Island Garden City of Samal, Panabo City and Tagum City the wage for non-agricultural workers receive a daily wage of P 240; agricultural workers (plantation) has P 230 wage while plantation workers receive P 209 and retail/service workers receive P 240 (for more than ten workers) and P 209 (for not more than ten workers).

For Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental and Davao Oriental, non-agricultural workers receive P 238; for agricultural workers (non-plantation) receive P 228 while (plantation workers) receive P 207 while the retail/ service employing more than ten workers should pay P 238 daily wage and P 207 for employers with less than ten workers

Call centers urged: Don't make city a recruitment ground
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

AN OFFICIAL of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) asked Manila- and Cebu-based call centers not to make Davao City as only their recruitment ground.

Instead, Andre Fornier asked the companies to establish call centers in Davao City, saying the industry has not yet fully developed in the city.

"We have two big call centers in Davao and around three to four small ones compared to Cebu with about 30 to 40 existing call centers," Fornier said during the Club 888 press forum at the Marco Polo Hotel Wednesday.

"Cebu is bragging that they have enough call center agents, but most of their agents and also Manila-based call center agents came from Davao. We will not support call centers, which are only making Davao City as a recruitment ground-:ohno: :ohno: :ohno: . Of course we cannot stop them from doing so, we have no law for that, but we will not encourage our people to be a call center agent in Manila or in Cebu," he said.

Fornier revealed that the city has the capability to operate call centers.

He urged call centers from Manila and Cebu to come to the city and open their call centers here.

He claimed that Davao City's training for call center agents are better than that of other places. He added that the passing rate for Davao City call agents is higher than that of Cebu, which is only 12 percent.

Davao City's passing rate is 30 to 40 percent, Fornier said.

"Call centers in Manila have been promising for so long to open call centers here, but after they get their agents from here, they go back to Manila and forget their promise," Fornier said.

He said Davao City is a very safe place to do business, but these call centers in Manila are overbuilding call centers in Cebu.

"In fact, we have no problem with physical facilities, we are quite similar with Cebu. I understand that Manila-based call centers have this main reason why they don't set up shop here, it is because if they do so, all agents working in Manila will come home," Fornier said revealing that 40 percent of call center agents in Manila are from Davao City.:ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:

We will not support call centers, which are only making Davao City as a recruitment ground .

I understand that Manila-based call centers have this main reason why they don't set up shop here, it is because if they do so, all agents working in Manila will come home," Fornier said revealing that 40 percent of call center agents in Manila are from Davao City

Endangered sea turtles draw Davao LGUs to summit

By Rizalene P. Acac
Inquirer
Last updated 06:09pm (Mla time) 12/06/2006

DAVAO CITY -- Efforts to conserve endangered sea turtles inhabiting the Davao Gulf would get a boost with the holding of the two-day Turtle Summit at the Royal Mandaya hotel here starting this Thursday, according to a local official here.

Councilor Leonardo Avila III, chairman of the committee on environment and natural resources, said local officials from the towns and cities surrounding the Davao Gulf would discuss measures to protect the turtles.

Sea turtles -- such as hawksbill, olive ridley and green turtles -- inhabit the coasts of Malalag and Malita in Davao del Sur, Lupon, Banay-banay and Tarragona in Davao Oriental, Island Garden City of Samal in Davao del Norte and this city, among others.

Avila, who also heads the Task Force Pawikan, said the presence of the turtles in the areas surrounding the Davao Gulf indicated "a thriving sea ecosystem."

He said the Indian Ocean South East Asian protocol, a treaty entered into by 26 nations including the Philippines, would be used as a framework during the summit. The treaty has detailed the need to conserve sea turtles.

"Considering that the turtles are migratory, there should be a uniform set of conservation efforts among the signatory states," he said. The protocol also declared 2006 as the year of the turtles.

Gemma Iturralde, project manager of Ecological Governance, which is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), said practices adopted by local government units and even business entities that contributed to the preservation of the turtles and their habitats would also be discussed during the summit.

She cited the creation of Task Force Pawikan of Davao City as an example of a best practice to protect the turtles.

Aside from the creation of the Task Force, the city government also built a turtle hatchery and nursery in Punta Dumalag here.

Robert Cariño of Task Force Pawikan said they were able to hatch 1,936 eggs since the drive started in 2003.

Iturralde said an assessment of turtle sightings as well as workshops would be done during the summit that would convene officials from 23 local government units along the gulf.

"Other issues affecting turtles like butchering will also be tackled and how could these be addressed," she said.

Rody’s War

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte says his hatred for criminals changed his city.

DAVAO CITY (davaotoday.com) – Mayor Rodrigo Duterte likes to regale his guests with the story of how, one time, using a piece of firewood, he crushed the hands of a man accused of stealing hand-held radios. The problem with the story, as the mayor himself would tell his visitors, is that he had actually punished the wrong man.

Duterte laughed out loud when he narrated this story one evening last week, during dinner with friends and journalists. He used the story to drive home the point that he hates thieves and criminals with passion.

The irony was apparently lost on him. To his critics, however, this story illustrates perfectly what is so wrong with Duterte’s obsession with ridding the city of criminals using what has been described by the mayor’s critics as criminal methods. Because he sidesteps due process, they say, he is bound to make mistakes sooner or later.

Indeed, according to the Coalition Against Summary Executions (CASE), an alliance of human rights and child advocates in the city, 12 of the 469 murdered by death squads or hired killers here from 1998 until 2005 had been cases of mistaken identity.

This year has seen the worst so far in the killings that have made this city infamous, with 147 summary executions. CASE said the murders have become even more brazen. “They shoot pointblank in broad daylight, even in busy spots like the entrance of a downtown shopping mall,” said Ricmar Mapalo, the group’s spokesman.

But many of his supporters, mainly law enforcers, businessmen and members of the city’s political and economic elite, laud the man and his crime-fighting method. They say of all the mayors this city has had, nobody quite changed it the way Duterte did. Duterte is one leader “who can implement the law,” said Leo Avila, chair of the Committee on Ethics and Good Governance at the City Council.

“My hatred for criminals – that’s what changed Davao City,” Duterte told the editors of davaotoday.com last week. In that interview, Duterte made no bones about his views of criminals, and offered a fascinating – if at times disturbing – insight into the mind of one of the most controversial and popular political leaders in the Philippines.

Excerpts:
Some say there have been cases of mistaken identity in these killings?
If they have the facts, why don’t they file a case in court or come to me and show to me? Why can’t they do that?

I remember the case of (human-rights worker Rashid) Manahan. He had received death threats in Cotabato. When he was killed in my city, they say I ordered the killing. Putang ina! Why would I kill a poor guy who was just working for an NGO? If you want, I’ll line up all the human-rights commissioners and kill them all.

They say you don’t touch the big fish.
Puta... I don’t hit the big fish? Hesusmaryosep! I know I cannot get (industrialist Jesus) Ayala and (banana magnate Antonio) Floirendo because they don’t use drugs!

How safe is Davao City?
Very safe, I would say, except for the terrorists. But the common crimes like snatching… That’s petty. I cannot kill a human being just because he stole small items. That’s too expensive a payment. I deal with kidnappers, especially people who kill, or people who rape and kill.

They make your blood boil.
I’m like that. It’s my human nature. And you know human nature is part of your character. That’s my persona.

What has changed about you since you first ran for mayor,
since you were a prosecutor?
I hate to mention this because I’m not trying to make a big issue out of it. I grew up with politics because my father was governor. So practically I have a good training about how to deal with problems of people.

My hatred of criminals – that’s what changed Davao. If I have not improved the lot of the poor folk there at Boulevard, it’s simply because of the economy. But what actually, to me, made the difference is at least the criminals here are afraid of the law. Here, if you are a police officer and you steal from a civilian, putang ina, I’m going to kill you. God, I will! I’ll M16 you in public.

You know, governance or whatever in public office -- it's all about sense and sensibility. That is all that is needed. I am proud that I walk the extra mile to see to it that this city is peaceful.

We’d like to make this clear: Each time you say you’d kill somebody….
That is all talk! (Laughs.)

But isn’t that a form of taking the law into your own hands?
No, it's a form of a threat, instilling fear in the minds of criminals. So, if you are a journalist, if you are an ordinary citizen, why should you be afraid? Unless you believe your mayor is a candidate for a mental asylum. (Laughs.) Why would you be afraid each time I say, “You criminals are sons of bitches! I’m going to kill all of you!”? If you’re afraid, then you must be a criminal.

Doesn't that put you in danger of being implicated if
something happens to these people after you say those things?
You know, guilt is personal. Remember that it's a principle of criminal law. Guilt is personal. There is no guilt by association just because I'm the mayor talking here nonsense.

Each time I threaten them, there’s always a qualification: “You terrorists, putang ina, I’m going to kill you!” As you see, they end up dead. (Laughs.)

What happens if you’re no longer mayor? The fear by the criminals could be of you, not the law. What happens if you’re no longer there and the person who replaces you is not as strong as ---
Putang ina, even if I’m asleep, wake me up and I’ll deal with it. (Laughs.) I’m never afraid of criminals, even when I was not yet a mayor. When I was a prosecutor, I kicked a man in the chest inside the court room.

Were you cited in contempt?
Of course! (Laughs.) I was a prosecutor and I was in jail. (Laughs.)

Why can’t you just prosecute these criminals, bring them to justice?
Some of them are dead. The others, we’re still going to kill them.

Were you frustrated with the legal system?
I began as a prosecutor, right? So take it from me. When I was a prosecutor for 10 years, this thing called guilt – that’s always an 80-20 proposition and all you have to do is to create doubt. And because of stringent regulations about right to counsel, information, due process and everything – these are so limited. What can you get from a terrorist during 36 hours of detention? Let’s be frank. What can you get?

The judicial process is too complicated?
It’s not just that. It’s the law itself. Because government is supposed to be powerful it owns everything but there's a barrier and that barrier is the Bill of Rights. It protects the citizens from abusive excesses, inordinate exercise of power. The problem is, they abuse it, so the criminals are in and out of prison. That’s what I hate about it.

Let’s put it this way. I am not about ready to admit any particular killing here. (Laughs.) I can go to prison. What I’m trying to say is that I’m trying hard to make everybody realize, both the civilians and criminals, that if you commit a serious crime, you'll just have to pay for it. Maybe inside the prison or maybe lose your funds or lose your life.

How do you know that your threats against criminals are working?
Look around. Compare it to other places. How could you not see it? Go around the city…

Have you given up on due process?
No, I should not waive anything there in the Bill of Rights. I think that we should observe it strictly. But if you do not leave room for me to exercise my discretion of human rights or if you do not give me that space, if you box me in one corner, you do not leave me an elbow room to give you, to afford you that right, in the end, you will lose everything... maybe including your life.

But what about the children? Many of those killed were minors.
(Stammers.) That’s a collateral… social problem. It becomes a collater… collateral itself. Its not a question of crime anymore. That’s what makes things difficult. Well, that is another problem. I cannot answer that.

The project is being proposed by the National Development Corporation or NDC which owns the property located near the Davao Fish port Complex at Daliao, Toril.

It aims to gain competitive edge among the EAGA countries through the establishment of a modern facility that will serve as consolidation, processing, packaging, storage and distribution center for the farm produce within and coming in to Davao City and to accommodate the growing numbers of traders and bulk sales of agri-produce in Davao City.

The project will have 7 components (trading center, cold storage facility, food processing center for value adding activities, dry storage warehouse, cargo handling and trucking, commercial or industrial spaces for lease or sale, and common-bonded warehouses for trading activities.

Prospective Locators will have the Following Options for Ownership of the Facilities:

a. Lease to own. Locators will pay a monthly amortization cost to the proponents for a maximum of 25 years to fully own the property in the complex;

b. Outright purchase from proponents. However, the sale to the locators shall be subjected to certain conditions to ensure proper utilization of the complex;

c. Invest in stocks. This is with the assumption that the proponents decide to create a corporation with developers and other prospective stockholders that will manage the complex.

2. Wastewater Collection and Treatment Facilities, P 1.148 Billion
The study shows that the collection and transportation of the wastewater of the most densely populated area of Davao City is feasible and would cost 1.148 billion pesos or 30 million US$.

The best layout has been found to be the separation of the whole area into three sub-basins, each with a pumping station, pumping directly to the wastewater treatment plant on the west bank of Davao River.

The most suitable site for a wastewater treatment plant that would serve the City of Davao has been identified as that located in Bucana, on the west bank of the Davao River, just downstream of the Bolton Bridge. Subsequent to a technical-economic evaluation of several alternatives, the SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor) process has been shown to be the most attractive treatment option in terms of its capital cost which amounts to 9.9 million US$.

Operating costs using SBR process are estimated to be 1.98 million US$ annually. (Estimates excluded costs of resettlement, land, financing, duty, and tax. Complete lists and exhibits of tables, summary of computations, layouts, and comparisons can be found in the feasibility study conducted by APTCO and the SM Group International, October 1999).

3. Proposed 23-km Coastal road, P 500 – 800 Million
This project is a 23-kilometer road that will start from Toril (a sub-urban area in Southern Davao) down to Cabaguio (a 4-lane road) across the Magsaysay Park. The construction of this coastal road will include toll ways and a center median wide enough to accommodate the piers for the Light Rail Transit system. Depending on the cost of lot acquisition since the project covers areas that are privately owned, the project may range from P500m to P800m.

4. Seaport Expansion Facilities
Modern facilities for the city’s seaport are needed with continuous increase in trading. A modern seaport will also complement the growing export-related manufacturing industries in the City.

5. Theme Parks
Theme parks in the tradition of Disney and Enchanted Kingdom shall provide thousands of tourists another alternative destination and itinerary when doing business or pleasure trip in the City or its nearby localities. Due to the absence of such establishments in the entire island, a pioneering venture in said industry is seen very feasible considering the more than 30-million market of Mindanao and the Visayas.

6. Sta. Ana Waterfront Development
From this area will rise amenities such as conference facilities, hotels, shopping center, fisherman’s wharf, commercial buildings, amusement facilities and parks. Left riverbank will be converted to a green area including commercial establishments. The coastal road and a few access roads will be connected with the reclamation area. This is estimated to cost around 12 billion pesos

7. Light Rail Project, P 240B
This project aims to establish an urban light rail transit system that will serve the coastal areas of the city as well as neighboring cities and municipalities in Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur. It hopes to provide faster, stable and reliable services to transport people and cargoes in the area. It is expected that the implementation of the project will result to the reduction of passengers’ travel time as well as solve the traffic congestions on the roads.

The project will cover a total of 37 stations for a total of 82.7 kms. Stretching from the city of Panabo in Davao del Norte and the Municipality of Sta. Cruz in Davao del Sur. It will be implemented through a Built-Operated Transfer (BOT) financing scheme and as planned, will be constructed as follows:

Stage 1 Panacan to Toril 35.7 kms 22 stations
Stage 2-A Toril to Sta. Cruz 25.0 kms 10 stations
Stage 2-B Panacan to Panabo 22.0 kms 5 stations

Status: Under study

8. Davao City Sports Complex, P 600 Million
The project aims to create an environment-friendly complex such as indoor / outdoor sports facilities, open space, sports academy (classrooms, auditorium, library, sports laboratory, sports medicine clinic) and quarters for athletes undergoing training and sports officials.

Under the agreement, the University of the Philippines is to make available, from its reservation, 20 hectares for this project and provide professional input in the operation of the sports complex. The city in turn will provide the funding for the infrastructure and the improvement of the access roads leading to the Complex.

Status: Planning stage

Opportunities Requiring Medium to Large Scale Capitalization

1. Business Process Outsourcing
The City is now being eyed as a viable site for call center operations and other related business process outsourcing operation (medico-legal transcription, animation, etc.) due to its readiness in terms of manpower, infrastructure and other required amenities.

2. Housing Development
With a backlog of more than 40,000 units, Davao City is a very viable site for housing projects that will offer low-cost to medium cost housing units.

3. Products and Services for Relaxation
There is a growing demand for products and services that will offer relaxation to the growing working population such as spas, salons, candles for aroma therapy, pillows, etc.

4. Establishment of Medical, Educational, Training and Sports Facilities
Davao’s daytime population doubles primarily because it is considered as the de facto capital of Mindanao serving as the center for commerce, education, services.

The Priority Investment Areas of the City

I sort of got into a little hot water when I took this
photo. As I headed down the highway between Digos
City and Bansalan I saw this Police Outpost building,
which I thought was an interesting looking building.
I got out and snapped a few photos, but was quickly
greeted by a PNP Officer wanting to know what I was
doing. I told him that I just took a photo of the Police
Outpost and he was very upset! Sorry… I had no ill
intentions!

;10773178']actually, the Floirendos have started to tap this market already with the ongoing developments at Damosa IT Park (still u/c though) so with the NCCC IT center (or whatever it is called) and the IT incubation center which is spearheaded by our very own SSC member SiliconGulf

oh this is good, but are there any manpower still left in the city? is the city implementing an education drive for IT and english much like what manila and cebu are doing? are we expecting them to return to davao? considering that theyre earning big moolahs in manila and cebu, some have already relocated there. they must have adjusted to the lifestyle in these two big cities and they might find davao too boring. after NCCC what else? and is this NCCC offering good pay? can they face tough competitiors like etelecare, peoplesuport, convergys? davao should overhaul their investment priority, they might have made changes lately but is this enough? are there enough support from the local government? too many questions to be raised. it could go endless, and your government is saying that the city will not support investors who are making the city just a recruitment area, will this relaxing support make davao attractive? a big N-O! what a totally distasteful move.

Well, Totoy, you're obviously an idiot who doesn't know anything about this city. Let me try enlighten you ....

1. It has more than enough manpower to supply the needs of not just BPO's wanting to relocate/locate in the city. It can tap a huge number of students from numerous universities and colleges with a really good handle of English (not like you -> see your post). Eka nga, hindi baluktot ang dila! Not just quantity but quality. If you look at all the previous threads (and if you know how to read) you'll see that the batting average of Davaoenos compared with other cities is really significantly higher.

2. Are they really earning "big moolah" in Manila and Cebu. If you consider the cost of living in those cities, that "big moolah" you're talking about is nothing. Plus the quality of life in Davao is much much better. You have all the amenities of a modern metropolis, yet you're only a few minutes away from the beaches and the mountains. No brownouts, like Manila and Cebu. No wate r problems (we're not even talking about water quality here which would be an oxymoron when you talk about Manila and Cebu). Cebu doesn't even have enough water for all its people, much less clean and dependable water supply.

3. Davao too boring. It depends what you call boring. But then again, with your IQ /intelligence, I shudder to think what you do for fun. If beach hopping, malling, clubbing, communing with nature is not your thing, yeah Davao is boring. If you go outside the confines of your shell, you might see that other places in the Philippines do experience progress. Matagal ng may kuryente dito!

4. Can Davao face tough competition. Well, do Manila and Cebu have all the brains. Do Cebuanos always top the board exams? I think the problem is not if Davao can compete, but if the people in Manila (especially national government) can even allow it to compete. All Davaoenos ask for is a level playing field. The gap between perception and reality is so big the farther you are away from Davao. From a Manilenos point of view, Davao is a hotbed of communism, muslim insurgency, etc. A place to be avoided. Period. They don't care if that's even the truth. Even national newspapers carry that stereotype . Davao has a lot of resources and human capital to be able to compete. No question.

5. What a totally distateful move??? Indeed. It's like Filipinos going abroad as nannies in Hong Kong and Singapore. Should we ban those Filipinos from becoming slaves abroad. Isn't that distasteful too? What Davaoenos want is just fairness and again a level playing field. Because if those businessmen just get to see the real situation, and not be influenced by all those "bad mouths", they will see that doing business in Davao will not only be good for the city but eventually good for their bottom line.

Unemployment up in Davao: labor
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE Department of Labor and Employment (Dole)-Southern Mindanao revealed that unemployment rate has increased in Davao Region with a total of 130,000 people unemployed based on a survey conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) in July this year.

"It was the latest survey result conducted by the NSO and it showed that unemployment rate in the region is 7.1 percent, higher than the same period last year with 6.7 percent," Ma. Gloria Tango, regional director of Dole, told Sun.Star Davao.

"Actually we are facing twin problems, the unemployment and underemployment, there are some people who are recorded as employed, but the number of hours they work ay kulang," she added. "A worker should work 40 hours a week to consider him as employed, less than 40 hours, he is considered underemployed."

Tango revealed that underemployment rate also increased in the region with 25.4 percent in July. The same period last year posted 20.9 percent underemployment rate.

Tango said Dole is addressing the problem through continuing programs, which are mandated by the National Government.

"We are continuously implementing our employment facilitation program in which we are soliciting job vacancies, we are conducting jobs fair to help place those who are seeking for jobs," Tango said.

Tango added that Dole has already initiated at least 25 jobs fair regionwide from January to September this year.

"Out of these jobs fair, we are able to solicit 39,000 jobs," Tango said, adding that a total of 2,031 applicants were hired on the spot.

^^ what is this, a resurrection or a mutant? anyway, what' your problem toyboy? we are a third world country, of course we hunt jobs like crazy not only here in davao but the whole country for god's sake. but are you saying davaoeños are generally poor? hmmmm, i can tour you around here for free if you want, explore davao city, and after that post another comment. you are a filipino, please enjoy our cities, don't bash or anything like that, davao city even gave 1 million to our fellowmen in albay. helping other places in the spirit of this brotherhood we aptly call "filipinos". ito ba ang makukuha namin in return? ipamukha sa amin na poor kami? walang trabaho dito? hindi dapat mag invest dito mas mabuti sa visayas na lang or yet stay put sa luzon? anong makukuha mo with that post? plus pogi points para sa iyong city? come on toyboy, explore your mind. baka nakulong ka lang sa sarili mong mundo.

and hey, davao city is not davao region... davao region is not that small. the davao gulf is divided into 5 groups (mag kasing laki ang mga yan)
1. davao del norte
2. davao oriental
3. comval
4. davao city

please pray for our souls then, you're lucky toyboy, your city is goddamn rich? err, which city nga ba?

Just for fun, let me show you how TOTOY mangles the king language. To state what's obvious, check the colored texts. Just a reminder, it's not my cup of tea to poke fun at other people's lack of English proficiency but just to show him he got a smear on his face, I surmise it's not so bad doing this. He's having a grand time treating our city like a doormat, let's see how our biggest critic fare in English this time.

TOTOY's statement starts here!

oh this is good, but are there any manpower still left in the city? is the city implementing an education drive for IT and english much like what manila and cebu are doing? are we expecting them to return to davao? considering that theyre earning big moolahs in manila and cebu, some have already relocated there. they must have adjusted to the lifestyle in these two big cities and they might find davao too boring. after NCCC what else? and is this NCCC offering good pay? can they face tough competitiors like etelecare, peoplesuport, convergys? davao should overhaul their investment priority, they might have made changes lately but is this enough? are there enough support from the local government? too many questions to be raised. it could go endless, and your government is saying that the city will not support investors who are making the city just a recruitment area, will this relaxing support make davao attractive? a big N-O! what a totally distasteful move.

TOTOY's statement ends here!

See what I mean? How condescending and arrogant he is in his postings yet he can't even handle the language to a decent degree. Those mistakes in simple subject-verb agreement can be learnt in high school and ultimately in college. Now I'm wondering if he even finished high school. I will let him slide with the his slip ups in spelling and give him the benefit of the doubt and yes anybody can dismiss it to be merely "typos".

NCCC SOARS HIGH ON ITS 28TH ANNIVERSARY
By Josie San Pedro

Chalking up 28 years of caring service to the community last December 5, the New City Commercial Corporation, better known to all and sundry as the NCCC, celebrated with its friends and customers in a grand manner. The party started at 5:00 p., at the 4th Level Exhibition Area., NCCC Mall, Matina, A well crafted video presentation that showed the beginnings of the store. interspersed skillfully with numbers of the program kept the crowd interested and lively up to the time dinner was announced.

By then it was “Bon apetit” for everyone. Welcoming the guests was the regal Helen Lim, Chair of the NCCC Group of Companies, acknowledging them and sincerely thanking them for the support the NCCC had enjoyed in its existence. People had been amazed about how crowds of customers from as far as Cotabato and neighboring provinces flock to shop at all the NCCC stores.

The video told us the reason why---it is because of the principles set up by its founder, the beloved, Lim Tian Siu, or “Tatay” to the NCCC family: “Take good care of customers by: 1) quality and complete variety of basic goods as well as new products; 2) the cheapest price possible; and 3) warm, friendly and personalized customer service. How it all began: The NCCC story began when Mr. Lim Tian Siu, or Tatay as he is fondly called, journeyed to the Philippines from China at age 14 to seek a new and better future.

He started out as a worker in a cigarette factory in Manila. And because of his hard work and perseverance, he was promoted as a sales agent for Mindanao. He sent money back home to his parents in China and saved the rest of his earnings, leaving very little for himself. During World War II he moved to Cotabato, relying on the hospitality of fellow immigrants. There he met and married Ko Giok Loo, a schoolteacher from Manila who was also escaping the war. With little money saved and a child on the way, the young couple did everything they could to survive, selling anything from farm products to freshwater eels.

After the war, they managed to open a general merchandise store, selling basic items as well as trendy items like shoes and jewelry. By the time their third child was born, their store has gained credibility and the young family now had stability. But fate had other plans for them. A big fire destroyed the whole town, including their store. Tatay was determined not to let this major setback bring him down. He asked for support from his suppliers, promising that he would pay in full everything he owed them. His suppliers knew from experience that he was as good as his word.

Tatay decided to bring his family to Davao to start over. With support from his suppliers, he was able to set up another general merchandise store in the heart of the commercial district. They were to face another challenge when this store also burned down. By then they already had five children whose future was foremost in the couple’s minds. The family’s resiliency helped them through with support from suppliers which never wavered. This time the store they put up was more focused on selling clothing and textile. Slowly and surely, this small business grew and flourished.

Under the guidance of Tatay and Nanay, the children were soon helping out with the store. The eldest son, Henry, managed store operations; Baby was with sales; Sally and Sim-Sim were in Manila helping with purchasing. When Henry got married, his wife Helen was asked to take care of money matters. Great Customer Service Begins at Home The family soon needed more hands to meet the growing demands of the store. Associates were hired and treated like extended family.

As helpers in the business, the company aimed to provide for their basic and developmental needs. Henry led and managed the store by taking care of his people. He was a charismatic leader who was simple, approachable, and very fair. He ensured that NCCC is a company that puts associates first. In return, associate loyalty and hard work provided the opportunity for NCCC to grow and expand. Branching Out and Taking Root In 1978, the first NCCC Supermarket and Department Store opened on Magsaysay Ave, As the store was gaining momentum, another fire hit the old textile store.

This was taken as a sign to put all focus and efforts on the new store. The opportunity to reach out to more people was realized with the opening of an NCCC branch in Tagum, Davao del Norte, an hour away from Davao City. Henry opened NCCC Palawan 1991, the first of its kind in the city. All the stores were doing extremely well. Henry was already making plans for a bigger store in Tagum, as well as a Mall in Davao. But fate intervened. In1997 the entire NCCC family was overtaken with grief due to the sudden death of Henry. Everyone had to work together and make sure that the company would continue to grow.. After more than a year of adjustment, it was time to pursue the growth of the company.

The construction of a bigger and better NCCC in Tagum was given priority and was completed in 1999. In 2000 the NCCC family was once more stricken with grief when Tatay joined his son. Even until the end of his life he was actively involved in the business he built. The passion and hard work he poured into NCCC has served as an inspiration for all he left behind. In 2002, NCCC decided to open its own brand of convenience store called NCCC Express (NCX), to cater to customers along the bustling street of C.M. Recto, Davao City.

The store was a success, with the community patronizing it as if it weren't a convenience store but a regular store. The most challenging and inspired project of NCCC to date was the opening of NCCC Mall Davao along MacArthur Highway, Davao City in 2003, fulfilling another vision of Henry. This was the first branch that was built as a mall and propelled NCCC as a significant player in the retail industry. This was the year of mixed emotions however, as this was also the year Nanay joined her spouse and son. She had played an equally important part in the founding of NCCC.

The 3 pillars of NCCC are now cherished memorials to the power of the company values of hardwork, excellence, care, humility, and fun. Another addition to the NCCC family in early 2006 with the opening of another NCX in Bolton, Davao City. The same year a small Kanegosyo station was put up in San Juan to cater to customers living in the surrounding provinces of Puerto Princesa. The newest NCCC member, is the NCCC Centerpoint branch at Matina Crossing in Davao, that opened a few weeks ago. Unity in Diversity The growing markets call for more focus and specialization.

NCCC saw the need to divide the company into several business units: NCCC Supermarket ensures that every household has a wide variety of the freshest and newest products to choose from at very low prices. NCCC Department Store is the place for quality and fashionable items from clothes, shoes, home wares and furnishings, to school and office supplies. There is always something for every member of the family. Hardwaremaxx has all the basic hardware needs plus durable home improvement tools, equipment and devices that can also be handy in the office.

HB1 (Health and Beauty in One) is a one-stop shop that provides health and wellness products for the entire family. Kodakan offers quality photo printing, instant digital printing, ID lamination and photocopying services at reasonable prices. Breadfactory offers a wide array of delectable and budget friendly bread and pastries. Foodcove provides family and friends with a comfortable place to enjoy sumptuous meals that offer value for money. Munchies offers instant mouth-watering snack treats that are as good as a complete meal. Makiboy offers Japanese inspired dishes that suit the Filipino taste and budget.

B3 (Bowling, Billiards, Bar) lets NCCC customers enjoy state of the art bowling, billiards and KTV facilities that come with delicious food and drinks. NCCC Cinemas provide viewers with quality movie releases through a lively acoustic theater set up with Dolby sound system. The Malls team takes care of tenants and is in charge of leasing and maintaining the stores. The Corporate offices work behind the scenes to support the needs of all the business units. More opportunities come and the possibilities are endless. Where there is a chance to serve more people, NCCC is sure to be there, for NCCC is a part of the community and is very much involved in its social development.

The NCCC Lead Team is composed of: Helen Lim, Chair; Tek Sim Go, President; Tick Hua, Executive Vice Pres., and Corporate Secretary; Ivan Lim, President, Malls and Entertainment; Javey Lim, President, NCCC Supermarket; Ivy Lim, President NCCC Dept. Store;; Lafayette Lim, President, Hardwaremaxx; Bert Barriga, Director, Malls and Entertainment; TJader Regis, Director, NCCC Marketing; Cristina Papa, Director, Dept. Store; Ambeth Santos, Director, Corporate Engineering, Recy de los Reyes, Director, HB-1 and Affiliates; Aurora Ly- Pelegrino, Director, Supermarkets; Aileen Gajo, Administrator, Public Relations; Ellen Jane Garcia, NCCC Mall Manager, Gaye Lim, Director, People Department; and Sharlene Lim, Director, Business Development.

Air linkages to expand within East Asia Growth Area
06 Dec 2006
Hamidah Atan

PUTRAJAYA, WED.:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Malaysia is one of four countries expected to sign an agreement to expand air linkages within Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines East Asia Growth Area (Bimpeaga).

Under the arrangement, Malaysia will be opening up Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Labuan and Miri as its cities of destination while Brunei has identified Bandar Seri Begawan.

Balikpapan, Manado, Pontianak and Tarakan will be offered by Indonesia while Philippines has identified Davao City, General Santos, Puerto Princesa and Zambango.

Both national carrier Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia will be designated to fly to all the cities.

The signing ceremony is expected to take place during next week’s Asean Summit in Cebu in the Philippines.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said the Cabinet in its weekly meeting today agreed that Malaysia should sign the agreement to realise the Asean aviation road map.

"There will be an unlimited number of frequency and aircraft. There will be no restriction and it is going to be a very liberal arrangement.

"For instance, from Kota Kinabalu, you can fly to all the cities in Indonesia and all relevant cities in airlines which have been designated by the Malaysian Government and the other governments," he said.

He also said the agreement will be over and above the bilateral agreements of the respective countries.

"Malaysia and other countries like Indonesia already have air agreements but on top of that, we have this extra arrangement."

He said the four nations also agreed to unlimited “fifth freedom” whereby designated aircraft can pick up passengers and fly to the scheduled destinations.

"Let say from Kuching to Davao City, they can pick up passengers in Davao and go to other cities. We can expect a lot of movement in terms of tourists, traders and investors. We are happy that after taking quite some time, we are about to sign the agreement."

Fifth freedom, which is listed under Schedule B of the agreement, comprises Bandar Seri Begawan, Balikpapan, Pontianak, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Davao City and Zamboanga.

hey mga migs, this made me ask myself, why are davao city, norte and del sur beaches are volcanic? i can understand that it could because of mt apo. for oriental, there parts that are volcanic, but those on the east coast, they are mostly white. when i was in san isidro for some video and photo safari, we went to a place called cawa-cawa pools (i thought gahi lang ang pagkasulti, pero it was indeed like pools, not falls, hehehehe). there were massive boulders i saw, and the whole are i thought were very volcanic and in formations (meaning lava flows, etc). was there a prehistoric volcano in the area (somewhere in san isidro or mati). if so, asa kaha dapit, do you friends nga geologist nga pwedeng makatubag ani. salamat.

As for unemployment rate, where are your numbers coming from? Are you a seer or just plain sira ulo? If you have your sources, like NEDA, etc., I would love to see them.

But yeah, for a city so far from the center with all the baggage it has to carry (Mindanao, Muslim insurgency, communism), Davao has survived and thrived. It has after all the third largest city in the Philippines population-wise. I guess these people coming to Davao know something that you don't. I hope they wont' share their secret with you. Robinsons Land eyes BPO center in Davao City mall
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña
The Philippine Star 12/09/2006

Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC) is embarking on a new project that is expected to house the largest call center or business process outsourcing operations (BPO) in Mindanao.

In a statement, RLC said it will make available 5, 000 square meters of office space within its planned two-level shopping mall in Davao City along J.P. Laurel.

RLC said the move is intended to take advantage of the continued expansion of the call center/BPO industry which is seen to grow by at least 100 percent next year.

According to the Contact Center Association of the Philippines (CCAP), existing call centers will continue to expand, with clients giving high marks to the quality of their services.

Aside from the call center, the mall will also house retail affiliates Robinsons Supermarket & Handyman Do It Best, quick service restaurants, and health & beauty outlets.

Robinsons Davao will be RLC’s second shopping mall in Mindanao. It is targetted for completion in mid-2008.

"We believe that this format will easily compliment the lifestyle of call center employees who look forward to some rest and recreation after work," said Robinsons Malls general manager Cornelio S. Mapa.

Davao City, the second largest city in the world, is considered as the educational, industrial, trade and information technology center of Mindanao. The city has a solid IT infrastructure and has a substantial base of proficient IT professionals who graduated from reputable locally-based colleges and universities.

Aside from shopping malls, RLC also owns and operates residential and office condominiums, town houses, housing subdivisions and hotels all over the Philippines. It also claims to be the largest office space landlord in the country today.

RLC has five office buildings, namely Galeria Corporate Center in Quezon City, Robinsons Summit Center in Makati City, Robinsons Equitable Tower in Pasig City, and Robinsons Cybergate Centers I and II in Mandaluyong City. It also houses call centers in five of its 18 malls across the country.
