From sweet, sour, spicy, salty, to hot or cold, name it and you can find it in the streets of Davao and other cities and towns. http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/7915/1217rizalpark2xb6.jpg (http://imageshack.us) http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/329/1217boltonstreetvendorkj4.jpg (http://imageshack.us) By Grace Uddin davaotoday.com DAVAO CITY -- It was one fine late afternoon when I was window shopping when two friends, Chim and Mai-mai, spotted me. They were off to catch a last full-show that night; they asked me to join them. But before watching the movie, we decided to have some kwek-kwek. Outside the mall, out in the street, several people were crowding around a small table with two men busy frying kwek-kwek or what others call tokneneng. It’s actually flour-coated hard-boiled egg, fried, then dipped in salt and vinegar. It costs only 6 pesos but quite filling, which is probably why it is a favorite in these hard times. Kwek-kwek is just one of the many street foods people can find in Davao City. Street foods are popular nowadays not only because these are tasty but mainly because these are cheap and can easily take care of hunger. From sweet, sour, spicy, salty, to hot or cold, name it and you can find it in the streets of Davao and other cities and towns. Street foods are already part of Philippine culture. Like in other Asian countries, it has become a way of life. Urbanization and poor socio-economic conditions in countries such as ours have paved the way for the proliferation of these businesses. Selling street foods does not entail large capital. The income vendors derive from their business is just average, just enough for their daily needs. It’s part of the so-called underground economy that has provided jobs, especially for women. It is particularly helpful in times like these when the economy is not doing so good and when unemployment is at 12 percent, the highest in Southeast Asia. Street vendor at Rizal Park, Davao City. Photo By Barry Ohaylan Friends like Chim and Mai are avid eaters of street food. According to them, they eat whenever and wherever those edibles are available. “It’s still food. Besides, the price is affordable and it’s fun eating it,” Chim said. Aside from kwek-kwek, here’s a sample of those delicious and yummy delicacies that you can find in the streets of Davao: Fish balls. Those tiny balls made of flour and fish bits, dipped in sweet, sour and hot sauces, are mouth-watering. Some people say that fish balls are not exactly sanitary, but what a cruel thing to say about something that tastes so good and feels so right? Yum! Hot cakes. These are so hot you gotta be careful before devouring a piece. It costs 3 pesos each but you buy two for 5 pesos. Turon na ube, maruya, turon na saging, pinaypay, ginanggang. Maruya vendor along Bolton St., Daval City. Photo By Barry Ohaylan However you want your ananas (and your yam), you get the same perfect merienda. Buko, orange, gulaman. Perfect quenchers after a feast on the street. Fruits on stick (papaya, pineapple, mango, hebe). Who says you can’t get that glowing skin for a cheaper price? Take fresh, rich in vitamin C fruits for only 5 pesos per pack. Waffle. Comes with different fillings -- cheese, hotdog. Sinugbang mais and boiled peanuts. All-time favorites! Dirty ice cream and ice milk. Melts in your mouth! Can be enjoyed in different flavors: durian, mango, strawberry and chocolate. Durian. The infamous “smells like hell, tastes like heaven” delicacy that makes it one of Davao’s finest. Balut. That chick! (Actually, it’s chicken embryo.) Yuck! Eeww! I don’t understand any of those 16 days or 18 days that the vendors often say when you buy balut but, according to the oldies, balut is excellent, pampatibay ng tuhod. Taho. This reminds me of Chyla, Chim’s little sister. This mix of bean curd, arnibal (that blackish sweet sauce), and sago has enabled the two of us to put up with Chim’s long hours of soccer practice. I love taho more than any street food. Advertisement Cotton candy. Soft, colorful, sweet cotton-like candy that makes one feel like a child again. Barbecue (chicken gizzard, intestines, etc.). You can find lots of this in Malativas or in any roadside stall, along with other finger foods like chicken skin, barbecue chicken, pork barbecue, etc. Best for pulutan or with steaming rice. You can sense this in the strokes, in the medium, in the subjects. In this issue of davaotoday.com, five visual artists who all hailed from Mindanao share their passion for the arts and for Mindanao. Some of them are fresh out of college while others have been around since the ‘70s. Through their craft and their vision – of the people, of nature, of revolution, to name a few -- they depict not only their world but ours. Rodney Yap "I saw women in despair, bullet proof-vested, inside homes and outside, insecure, because they are caught in the crossfire," says Yap, a graduate of Davao City's Ford Academy of the Arts. The painting that shows a woman carrying an umbrella earned him a semi-finalist award in this year's Metrobank young painters competition. (View Yap’s work.) http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/1371/yapjs1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/3625/yap1ja0.jpg (http://imageshack.us) Ronald "Pinx" Gaspe Now in his early 40s, Gaspe is a freelance artist. A member of Lakbay Diwa artist group, he has been around, providing creative services to nongovernment organizations. He had mounted art exhibits with the now defunct Kulturang Atin Foundation Inc. and is the first artist from Mindanao to have visually depicted the life and times of persons with HIV/AIDS, in a project he did with the Talikala Foundation. (View Gaspe’s work.) Jaime Ang Sculpting to painting are Ang's creative inclinations. He teaches art at the Ford Academy of the Arts. In his mixed media art, he says, "nature comes from a single source: the ever-burning, all consuming fire of life -- this is my credo, my firm belief. Its aura pulsates through the vast and infinite web of life: it surges through space and time and shatters myths and conventions." (View Ang’s work.) Ruben de Vera From the ‘70s up to now, Ruben de Vera has been around in the art circles. He depicts the troubled times in the dark years of martial law and, at the same time, gave us a glimpse of the beauty of the Davao Eagle. (View de Vera’s work.) http://img490.imageshack.us/img490/8528/deveraaj0.jpg (http://imageshack.us) Bagani The works of Bagani, mostly pen and ink and acrylic, blend with the people in the Mindanao mountains. His can be called "revolutionary art." Alice Guillermo, a noted art critic and professor of the University of the Advertisement Philippines, once wrote of this artist: “Bagani is a revolutionary artist who makes his work in the midst of struggle, in a countryside in arms. This explains his works' authenticity of detail, their persuasiveness and immediate presence." Lizabel "Wit" Holganza, president and school administrator of the MTC Academy in the city, said the fact was based on the latest survey of a Californian-based organization. "Most Dabawenyos have the five elements to be proficient in English -- understanding, reading, speaking, writing, and thinking," Holganza said. Holganza added that Filipinos, especially the Dabawenyos, can globally do business now with engaging in business process outsourcing. Holganza is pushing medical transcription (MT) career, saying that the best to pursue MT career and business prospect is now. "We have the available means here in engaging in the business. All we need to have is a computer, earphones, foot pedal, expander software, spelling software, and medical terminology books," she said, adding that a medical transcriptionist could work anywhere, at home, in the office, in the Internet cafe, as long as there is a computer. Holganza said a foot pedal is needed since it is helpful whenever a medical transcriptionist wants to pause or rewind with the pre-recorded dictation by a physician. In an earlier interview, Ryan Herrera, marketing manager of MTCA-Manila, said that the level of interest of people in medical transcription is very high considering that there is an increasing demand of MTs in the United States every year. Woodruff's 24th Division troops stormed into Davao, capital of Mindanao and last large Philippine city in Japanese hands, after one of the toughest marches in Pacific annals—more than 140 miles in 17 days from the Parang landing beach. They found most of the Japanese army gone, the elaborate defenses abandoned. All the wicked-looking pillboxes had faced seaward—the wrong way. Gone, too, were Davao's 18,000 leading citizens, the smiling Japs who had come to this town long before Dec. 7, 1941, acquired 75% of its wealth, made it a "little Tokyo" in the Philippines and plastered big Tokyo with posters urging other Japs to settle there. Suspicious Manilans called it "Davao-kuo"—a somber reference to the process by which the Japs had moved into Manchuria, then renamed it Manchukuo. Why the civilians had left Davao was not clear. Perhaps they sincerely dreaded American vengeance, perhaps their own troops drove them away. But the troops, it was clear, had left a few units behind for house-to-house fighting, then retreated to the hills to rat-fight from caves and ridges, in conformance with standard Japanese tactics. U.S. infantrymen went after them with some new ideas. On Luzon they had discovered that the 90-mm. antiaircraft gun, with its high muzzle velocity and flat trajectory, makes an excellent cave-closing weapon. When the gun is brought into position, its accurate sights permit gunners to draw a sniper's bead on cave mouths thousands of yards away. In twelve days two guns closed over 100 caves on Balete Pass; one cave later yielded 23 Japs, dead of suffocation. Source: Time Magazine davaoeagle December 19th, 2006, 10:02 AM Whether we like it or not, our beloved Davao is an agricultural-based economy so let's celebrate our victory in this area. Like they say, "we can't win 'em all!!" :) :) :) Tuesday, December 19, 2006 353.85 hectares of land developed for lanzones A TOTAL of 353.65 hectares had been developed for lanzones production by the regional office of the Department of Agriculture (DA) since October this year. Of the five provinces in Davao Region, the agency has identified Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, and Compostela Valley. Davao Oriental was posted to have the largest area developed with 142.60 hectares in at least two of its municipalities namely, Lupon and Mati. The other is Compostela Valley Province with 140.40 hectares developed. Monkayo, Maragusan, Mawab, Nabunturan, Laak, and New Bataan are the areas identified in Compostela Valley, while Malita, Digos City, and Sta. Maria in Davao del Sur. Only 36.91 hectares were developed in Davao del Sur while 33.74 hectares were identified in Davao del Norte including four of its municipalities, San Isidro, Asuncion, Carmen, and Kapalong. Meanwhile, with the identification of areas for lanzones production, 354 jobs is expected to be generated by DA regionwide. (JGRS) davaoeagle December 19th, 2006, 10:04 AM Oh I love this development... Here's more.... Tuesday, December 19, 2006 DA identifies 20 new sites for veggie production SINCE Mindanao is considered as the food basket of the country, the regional office of the Department of Agriculture (DA) has identified 20 new sites for vegetable production in Davao Region to further increase its demand and supply. DA has already identified new areas in Montevista, New Bataan (two sites), Laak, and Nabunturan in Compostela Valley Province as source of vegetables as of October this year. The agency has not identified, however, a new site for production in Davao City. Meanwhile, Asuncion, Kapalong, Tagum City, Talaingod, San Isidro, Panabo City, Sto. Tomas, and Carmen, were the places identified in Davao del Norte. Davao del Sur, on the other hand, has six areas identified for vegetable production including Sta. Maria, Malalag, Digos City, Kiblawan, Padada, and Sulop. However, DA has only identified Tarragona in Davao Oriental to be a new source of vegetables. The total area the agency expanded for vegetable production is 248.53, Compostela Valley was noted to have the largest area identified with a total of 122.45 hectares, while Davao Oriental has the smallest identified site with the figure of 1.75 hectares. The agency, on the other hand, developed a total of 360 jobs in the municipalities with the expansion of the new areas of vegetable production in the four provinces mentioned. (JGRS davaoeagle December 19th, 2006, 10:05 AM Tuesday, December 19, 2006 Oledan: Progressions By Radzini Oledan A PITCH on violence against women. Davao City Administrator Wendel Avisado shared with the public and City Government employees the campaign to end violence against women anywhere and everywhere. The 18-day campaign highlights the continuing challenges in changing the prescription of women's roles and positions in society. One of the key aspects of every culture is the way it defines gender roles for almost without exception women are assigned to roles which are subservient to those of men and most of these roles are often enforced through violence. Social and political institutions foster the violence against women. Certain cultural practices and traditions are invoked to explain or justify such violence that is nearly invisible because they are seen as "normal." Violence against women is any act of gender based violence that results in physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life." Progressive interpretations of this definition affirm that acts of omission, such as neglect or deprivation can constitute violence against women. Violence in the family includes battering by intimate partners, fathers or brothers, sexual abuse of female children and young women in the household by family members, dowry-related violence and marital rape. It also covers abuse of domestic workers including involuntary confinement, sexual assault and physical abuse. Poverty can be seen both as a cause and a consequence of violence against women. A recent World Health Organization report suggests that women living in poverty suffer disproportionately. The lack of economic autonomy, denial of property rights or access to housing, and fear of losing their children, means that few women can risk the truly daunting consequences of leaving violent situations and attempting to secure justice from a legal system that may be discriminatory or indifferent. Women who flee their homes to escape violence or conflict, or leave to try to find a better life, often find themselves at risk of abuse and exploitation, with little or no protection. During armed conflicts, violence against women is often used as a weapon of war, in order to dehumanize the women themselves, or to persecute the community to which they belong. What makes this matter worse is the perception that violence against women is inevitable because they are seen as normal or acceptable. The reason that complaints of sexual harassment and abuse in the workplace are often ignored. We have yet to hear, for instance, from the Integrated Gender and Development Office (IGDO) the progress of cases of violence against women, including cases of sexual harassments at their homefront. Hidden, condoned or ignored. Violence against women will continue as long as perpetrators remain unpunished. City gov’t to use sports complex fund for bridge rehab, traffic signalization By Romeo R. Braceros Jr. Published : 2006-12-18 THE CITY government is diverting the P150 million fund intended for the construction of the sports complex to the rehabilitation of the Maa bridge and setting up of more traffic lights within the main streets of the city, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said. Duterte said he decided to suspend the construction of the sport complex because of the case that some residents filed against the management of University of the Philippines-Mindanao who claimed ownership over the lot. The sports complex was supposed to be built in the property owned by the university. "I cannot continue the sport complex project in a land embroiled with legal controversies so that this undertaking will not suffer the fate of Artica dome in Maa," Duterte explained. He said there is a big possibility that the legal battle between the UP and residents will drag on for a long time to the detriment of the public. "I do not want people to question me on the funds for the project. The sports complex construction will be delayed because of this legal problem," he said. The mayor said it would be ideal if the city allows the legal dispute to be finished first before the sport complex construction is started in the contested property. Duterte said while the legal problem on the property is not yet over, it is better that the city government ivert the money to other projects. "If we can repair the bridge in Maa, it would save the city money in the transport of our garbage to the dumpsite in Carmen, Tugbok District," he said. The mayor hoped that the city council will support his plans to divert the fund. davaoeagle December 19th, 2006, 10:29 AM PIA Press Release 2006/12/19 SouthMin LGUs post good credit standing - Land Bank by Prix D Banzon Davao City (19 December) -- The local government units in Southern Mindanao showed positive credit standing with the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP). LBP head and vice president for the Davao region Joselito Gutierez in an interview said that they noted 100 percent repayment rates of loans from among the LGUs. He also said that this sector is the biggest in terms of loan capacity first because they are ones that are knowledgeable of what projects are supposed to be funded. Gutierez said their LGU exposure to loans covered 25 percent of their loan portfolio. "We are confident doing business with them firstly because aside from our regular talks with them we also offer our loan products that they could avail to support their programs in their different communities in their area," he said. He said they offer the loans based on their carrying capacity. On the other hand Gutierrez said they also have projects that focus on environmental concerns. He said most of these are with small and medium entrepreneurs that need approval of the environment clearance certificate. The ECC has to be submitted to the LBP as a requirement in the processing and approval of loans. In the LGU sector the most recent project that LBP had approved is the sanitary land fill project of Davao City. The LBP also has a tie-up project of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources on different environment related areas like watershed projects. This was the announcement made by Pag-IBIG Fund vice president and deputy chief executive officer Jaime A. Fabiana during the OFW Family Day at SM City Davao on December 16, 2006. Fabiana who encouraged other OFWs to become Pag-IBIG member said the housing program is one of the services that the overseas workers can readily avail of. He said with the interest rates now being lowered owning a house could be more easier for the members. The Pag-IBIG housing loan may be used to finance of the following: purchase of a fully developed lot within a residential area not exceeding 1,000 sq. m.; purchase of a residential house and lot, townhouse or condominium unit; construction or completion of a residential unit on a lot owned by the member; purchase of a lot and construction of a residential unit thereon; home improvement; and refinancing of an existing loan. He explained that with the new schedule of interest rates package of up to P300K has 6% interest rates from the old 10 percent, P300K to P500K is now 7 % from 10%, P500K to P1M at 10.5 % from 11%, and P1M to P2M at 11.5% from 12%. Loan term of up to P750K is a maximum of 30 years while those over P750K to P2 M before with maximum term of 20 years has been moved now to 30 years. Fabiana said that for only US$5 an OFW can now become member of Pag-IBIG Fund and be eligible to the services of the Fund. Fabiana said that starting 2007 they will beef up their services to capture membership of OFWs prior to their deployment in the different parts of the world. He admitted that their OFW coverage is still very minimal at 200,000 as against the national figure of over 6 million Filipino workers abroad. He is optimistic that they could be able to reach out to more OFWs because they had assigned coordinators in the different regions to cater to their Pag-IBIG Overseas Program. He said while they also have employees that link up with the different foreign attaches in key areas around the globe they recognized the fact that advocacy must start from here. (RLC) will be building up an initial 5,000- square-meter IT zone in shopping mall in Davao City to accommodate contact center firms. The facility will be located within Robinsons Place Davao, construction of which is to begin by 2007. "We believe that this concept will easily complement the lifestyle of Dabawenyo call center employees who look forward to some rest and recreation after work" said Robinsons Malls general manager Cornelio S. Mapa, in a statement. Currently, Robinsons hosts call centers in five of its 18 shopping malls all over the country. The company's Davao shopping mall is targeted for completion in mid- 2008. The company said the move is intended to take advantage of the continued expansion of the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, which is seen to grow by at least 100% next year. The Contact Center Association of the Philippines said existing call centers will continue to expand due to an increasing number of clients satisfied with the quality of their services. davaoeagle December 19th, 2006, 07:29 PM Ramirez stays on PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal Arroyo yesterday asked Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez to stay on and continue the quest for the elusive first Olympic gold. Mrs. Arroyo informed the PSC chief of her wishes during her speech and informal talks with sports officials while handing 18 Filipino athletes, who won medals in the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar their incentives. The President’s encouraging words, according to Ramirez, have prompted him to abandon his plans to quit his post after the Asiad. Ramirez had earlier expressed his desire to leave the government sports agency by the end of the year. “Nu’ng sinabi niya na ‘Butch, tuluy-tuloy tayo sa Olympics,’ sabi ko, ‘yes ma’m.’ I told her I will continue to serve and I am committed to serve the country,” said Ramirez following a 30-minute ceremony at the Rizal Hall in Malacañang. A total of P13.5 million in cash incentives was handed to the 18 Filipino athletes, who collected a total of four golds, six silvers and nine bronze medals during the Asiad. The PSC chief mentioned to the President the commitment of First Gentleman Mike Arroyo to resume his support for the athletes in the preparation for the 2007 Southeast Asian Games, and eventually the Beijing Olympics in 2008. With the President in high spirits, Ramirez said he got the Chief Executive’s nod to pursue plans to continue the godfather program and send selected athletes to other countries for training. Focus will be on combat sports. The PSC will also send fencers to China, taekwondo jins to Korea, karatedo fighters to Italy and wushu athletes to China, while providing the boxers a Cuban coach. “The First Gentleman is focused on the Olympics. He is committed to the quest for the Olympic gold,” explained Ramirez. Cue artist Antonio Gabica got the biggest chunk of the cash bonanza, receiving P2.3 million for the 9-Ball gold and the 8-Ball silver he won. Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco and chairman Robert Aventajado, who were also in Malacañang, were expected to identify which athlete will be sent to international training next year. (Sun.Star Davao/Rene B. DPWH-Southern Mindanao maintenance division chief Rowena Jamito said 139 other billboards face demolition for non-compliance with the Building Code. One of the provisions of the code that has been violated is the construction of billboards across thoroughfares, on church and school fences, pedestrian overpasses, fly-overs, and waiting sheds. The code also does not allow putting up of billboards within the one-meter distance from electric and telephone posts or wires and within 10 meters from the road right-of-way. Size limits are also set, which a number of the billboards along Generoso and Bolton Bridges have exceeded. Jamito said despite the December 15 deadline set by Public Works Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane, they will continue with their operations against illegal billboards until its owners finally comply with the building code. "As of December 8, we have demolished 100 percent of the billboards in the city proper located within the road right of way," Jamito said. She said advertisers and billboard owners in the city have been very cooperative. Aside from the removal of illegal billboards, DPWH will continue with the maintenance and repairs of all national roads in the region. (CPM) davaoeagle December 21st, 2006, 06:56 AM Thursday, December 21, 2006 Christmas with a bang sans firecrackers By Charles Raymond A. Maxey FIRECRACKERS are banned in Davao City, but this bustling metropolis of over a million people is celebrating the holiday season with yet another big bang. The roar does not come from the deadly firecracker, of course, but from the sounds of drums of students participating in a cheer-dance competition, singer-celebrities from the entertainment world and children's carols -- all part of the programs and activities initiated by City Hall to brighten up everyone during the yuletide season. From the time Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte led the ceremonial switch-on of the Christmas lights early this month, which glistened City Hall and the Quezon and Rizal parks and turned them into magnificent sites of colors, it has been a non-stop revelry for the people of Davao. Who needs firecrackers to ignite a party atmosphere? Not the Dabawenyos. "It has been our way of life and we intend to do just that in the years to come," says City Administrator Wendel Avisado of the people's newfound practice of celebrating Christmas and New Year. Five years since Duterte imposed a firecracker ban in the city, this Filipino tradition is totally dead in as far as Dabawenyos are concerned. The people had come to realize the importance of such policy. Exploding firecrackers causes injuries and even deaths. "It has become institutionalized," Avisado said of the ban. "Here, we have a solemn but joyful celebration of the holiday season without the fear of getting injured or even killed cause by firecracker explosions, or the firing of guns." In the first year that Duterte imposed the policy, he got the full backing from the City Council, which complemented his order by passing a law, that prohibits the manufacture, sale, distribution, possession or use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic device in the city. The policy turned out to be a master stroke from the mayor. Based on records from the Davao Medical Center, firecracker-related injuries in the city dramatically reduced when the ban was imposed. Before the ban, records at the Davao Medical Center showed that there were 47 firecracker-related injuries in 1998, 59 in 1999, and 88 in 2000. Of the 88 victims in 2000, five were admitted and 83 were sent home after being treated, underscoring the havoc posed by firecrackers device to people. Upon imposition of the policy, the number of firecracker-related injuries in Davao went down to only two from December 21, 2001 to January 4, 2002. In the next four years, Davao will register almost zero incident, an indication of how effective the policy in saving one's finger or even life. Avisado said the people themselves played an important role in the successful implementation of the ordinance. "We would like to thank the people for supporting and embracing this policy. We also would like to thank Mayor Duterte for his untiring effort to make sure that the ordinance is followed," Avisado said. Roaming around the city, one could feel the Christmas spirit even in the far-flung barangays, what with the Christmas carol-singing contests and dance competitions launched to provide a lively mood. The children are the most joyous. They got to enjoy a free carousel ride daily at Rizal Park and are thrilled no end by the dancing Santa Clauses at the Quezon Park fronting City Hall. In Bankerohan, a group of children sang Christmas carols to fish vendors one drizzling night. Never mind the tune and the weather, they just came to sing and receive presents, which brought smile to their young faces. "Silent night, holy night. All is calm, all is bright...." Christmas carols are filling the air and people are celebrating the holiday season, the Davao way. WawaY[625] December 21st, 2006, 07:50 AM Lami ba ang food? UAYAN, Correspondent Davao businessmen want techno-entrepreneurship Davao City — Foreseeing an expansion in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector starting 2007, businessmen in this city are moving to ensure that demand for competent workers will be met. Members of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. are discussing with colleges and universities the possible inclusion of a subject in techno-entrepreneurship. Andre Fournier, newly elected board member of the Davao chamber, said the group has made a proposal for local schools to include a six-unit elective course on developing students’ business interest in the ICT sector. He also said that this early, two schools have indicated that they are interested in offering the subject next school year. The Davao chamber has financed the studies of a Davaoeño scholar currently taking up a technology entrepreneurship course in Australia. The chamber will tap him to help encourage more schools to offer the subject as well as to train individuals who are interested to engage in the sector. "We must establish long-term foundation for techno-entrepreneurs because we want our people to stay in Davao," said Simeon Marfori II, also a board member of the Davao chamber. The establishment of the Damosa Information Technology Park along J.P Laurel Avenue, six kilometers from Davao City proper, is seen to further boost this thrust. Developed by the Floirendo Group, the 23-hectare area will house two information technology buildings, a data building, and a commercial and utility building with unlimited power supply. The information technology park’s first phase of development, which aims to support information technology facilities and infrastructure, is estimated to cost at least P20 million. The company said it will need P150 million more to construct the second phase of the park, which will enjoy incentives such as a four-year income tax holiday, or six years for pioneer businesses; an option to pay a special 5% tax on gross income earned, in lieu of all national and local taxes, except real property taxes; and exemption from payment of import duties and taxes on imported machinery and equipment and raw materials. Damosa Land’s presentation to local media showed the park will be equipped with a high-speed fiber-optic telecommunication backbone and high-speed international gateway facility or wide-area network. Company official Ed Villaber said the park will "spur economic growth in the city." Damosa’s ICT park is the second in Mindanao after Cagayan de Oro City’s Pueblo de Oro Park, which received its accreditation two years ago. "There are some indicators that Koreans will come during the first quarter of next year, so we need to do a lot of hard work to prepare for it," Art Boncato, sales and promotions director of the Marco Polo Davao, said during the Club 888 Christmas party, Wednesday. Boncato, who will be attending the 26th Asean Tourism Forum (ATF) to be hosted by Singapore next month, said Marco Polo Davao will be continuing what it started in terms of developing relations with businessmen from other countries. "A lot of interested market will be coming to Davao and we will continue our good relations with them so that they will come here sooner than we expect," Boncato said. He added that the regional office of the Department of Tourism (DOT) has already drafted a grand plan for tourism destination so that tourists and investors will not only come to Manila and Cebu, but all down to Davao City. Stanley Lao, general manager of the Marco Polo Davao, also believes that next year will be another good year for the tourism sector. "The first indicator is that I already see a lot of investors coming to Davao to test the market and its potentials," Lao said. "The mindset of people in looking at Mindanao have already changed and they see that the city has a potential to grow," Lao added. Earlier, the Mang Inasal, a phenominal Visayan fast food chain that originated in Iloilo, has opened its new branch at the Gaisano Mall of Davao. Its management decided to open its third branch here and the 25th in the country due to the fact that Davao City has a potential market for its products. Meanwhile, a gun manufacturing firm, the Armscor Philippines, has also recently opened its display center in the city making Davao City a regional hub for its products. davaoeagle December 21st, 2006, 07:08 PM Friday, December 15, 2006 Tuna exporters insist on Davao-Japan direct flight By Joy Romares-Sevilla DAVAO tuna exporters are clamoring for a direct flight from Davao City to Japan where they market their fresh products, to preserve their quality and boost competitiveness. In Thursday's year-end briefing on small and medium enterprises and Exports Forum at the Apo View Hotel, tuna exporters in the region said their product is highly perishable and that the indirect flights from Davao City to Japan is one of the main reasons that affect their operations. Ann Pamintuan, president of the Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc. (Philexport-11), said they had already discussed initial plans with the director of the Davao Fishport for the opening of direct flight from Davao City to Tokyo, Japan. "Two months ago, I had a meeting with the director of the Davao Fishport concerning this matter, in fact we have already scheduled another meeting before the end of the year to tackle the same issue," Pamintuan said. Tuna exporters in Davao Region are exporting tuna in at least three cities in Japan namely: Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka. The exporters said they pay for about P1 million for every ton of tuna exported in Japan. Exporters added direct flight from Davao to Japan will help them to be more competitive considering that their products' quality will be ensured and maintained. davaoeagle December 21st, 2006, 07:10 PM PIA Press Release 2006/12/22 Sasa port upgrade on by RG Alama Davao City (22 December) -- The Philippine Ports Authority has poured in about P1.17 billion in port expansion projects in the major ports in Southern Mindanao particularly in Davao, General Santos and Zamboanga. Sasa wharf gets the biggest share in the expansion budget pie with about P398.5 million allocated for its upgrading and expansion. Makar wharf in General Santos expansion is pegged at P397.5 million with the Zamboanga port expansion estimated at P382.5 million. The wharf located in Davao City's industrial area currently shows congestion of docking vessels and calls for an expansion in its north side. These projects is slated to take off in early 2007, the expansion covers the construction of reinforced concrete (RC) wharf with an area of 10,000 square meters and back-up area and major improvements in the drainage and portlighting systems. Sun West, the contractor who won the bidding for the Davao expansion will undertake the project for an estimated 720 days. According to PPA facilities construction and Maintenance Department manager Tomas Carlos, the authority is confident to finish on time or even ahead of schedule in beating the corporate targets by early 2008. The bidding of these projects are already completed. Southern Mindanao PPA Port District Manager of Abdussabor Sawadjaan said that it is a privilege that three out of ten ports up for expansion are in Southern Mindanao. The PPA has its 2010 vision of having its major ports meeting international standards and services hence the expansion program. Sasa together with Makar and Zamboanga has been top national performers in terms of operational indices such as ship calls, cargo throughput and passenger traffic as well as in its revenue collections. The expansion in Sasa will boost Davao economy particularly through infrastructure support and will boost maritime trade activities. The project will also serve as a strong bastion of the agricultural sector in support of the Strong Republic Nautical highway (SRNH) by pushing for the Roll-On Roll-Off transport system in moving goods and people. The expansion is also part of the President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's Mega-regions development blueprint which has taken off due to sustained economic growth that has provided the capital to jumpstart infrastructure expansion projects such as these. (PIA XI/PPA Somin) [top davaoeagle December 21st, 2006, 07:20 PM Davao business executives have projected better economic prospects in this city in 2007. Joji Ilagan-Bian, Mindanao representative to the Export Development Council (EDC), said better prospects are seen in the information communication technology (ICT) and tourism sectors next year. She also noted of the growing number of registered small business enterprises in the city. The number would be higher if undocumented businesses come out and formalize their trade activities, she added. Bian based her optimism on Davao economy for next year on the positive outlook of investors. She said a number of investors are considering Mindanao specifically Davao as potential investment destination. Stanley Lau, general manager Marco Polo, Davao said the steady growth of the number of visitors billeting in the hotel is an indicator that a lot of travelers are visiting the city. He said many of Marco Polo’s customers are asking how to invest and what are the investment opportunities in the city. The tourism industry would definitely continue to grow in the city in 2007, he said. Art Boncato, Davao Tourism Association (DATA) president and marketing manager of Marco Polo, Davao said the hotel is fully booked in the first quarter of 2007 indicating a rosy picture of the city’s tourism industry next year. He said Marco Polo, Davao is preparing for visitors from Korea and China in the first quarter of 2007. Korea and China are emerging big markets in the city, he added. Boncato had recognized the domestic visitors as major contributors to the increasing number of foreign tourists in the city. He said local visitors are effective promoters of the city’s tourism industry. “I don’t think the city’s tourism industry would experience this growth without the domestic market,” he said.
