“We have proposed arrival and departure outlets. They are considering setting up shops,” said DFP’s Start. “The international flights are to destinations in the Asia-Pacific region like Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. Davao is a big city.”

The Mission of the PME Fathers
The Project for a Seminary

The PME Fathers came from Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The Society of the PME Fathers was invited to help develop the Catholic Mission in Mindanao to be particularly assigned to the three provinces of Davao.
At the turn of the century and in the first three decades, Davao was a virgin land. Gradually Filipinos from Luzon and the Visayas migrated to make a living in these regions of Mindanao.There were no priests; it there were, they were only very few to walk the forests of the second largest island of the Philippines.

Then the PME Fathers arrived in 1937. One of them was Clovis Thibault, who later became the first bishop of the Diocese of Davao, then the three Provinces. He became the champion for the native clergy education and for the seminary.

The first thing the PME Fathers did was to establish parishes and churches. World War 2 interrupted and slowed down the mission for a while. But the missionary momentum gained after the liberation and the granting of the Philippine Independence in 1946.

Migrants from all over the Philippines continued to come, building communities and towns; the PME Society brought in more priests, following the development of towns. Where towns were built, so also the Catholic Parishes with churches and schools were constructed.

It was clear in the mind of the PME Fathers that one day the Filipino Native clergy would take over the management of the Catholic Church; and that it was a priority in their mission to build a seminary and educate the future priests of the Diocese of Davao.

As early as the first years of the fifties, the Fathers were already scouting for seminarians, spotting the best and the brightest students of Catholic and Public Schools. Housed in a temporary residence, the first batch gathered and studied at the Ateneo High School.

The first Rector of the Seminary was Fr. Louis-Charles Sabourin. I would remember the names of Acasio and Jun Llanos, all from Digos, Camina, and the other pioneers in the names of Rogelio Antalan of Samal, Ben Benedicto of Davao City, Jun Fernandez of Digos, Isaac Gravador of Digos, Jesus Albacite of Tagum, Ed Rodriguez, Vicente Abranica of Tagum, Buen of Dapecol, Lazo and Tusoy of Calinan.The first batch of seminarians would later take theology studies in Manila.

The St. Francis Minor Seminary was built in 1955, and became occupied in 1956. It was named after the patron saint of the PME Society. The next Rector was Fr. Bazinet. The Saint Francis Xavier Major Seminary for Theological studies would not be ready until 1964.

The pioneers of the new Minor Seminary at Catalunan Grande were names like Arthur Fernandez, Ric Merquita, Ruben Berondo, Manuel Ymalay, Rey Sorongon, Llanillo Lewylen,Frank Alvarez, Bonifacio Burlaza, Lito Lorenzana, Gabriel Catalan, and a few more. I came in as a later pioneer of the Seminary in 1959.

These Fathers at one time or another taught in the Saint Francis Xavier Seminary. They brought with them top quality high school and college education as professional teachers in Latin languages, English, Astronomy, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology. and the Philosophies. In the Major Seminary, we also had Father Denis, Father Paredis, Father Picard, Father Tetrault. I think the pioneer seminarians between 1956 to 1974 got the best and worldclass education of the times from the PME fathers.

The Saint Francis Xavier Seminary as a new experience
The communities in Mindanao as a growing Filipino people was new; all Catholic Priests were foreigners from Canada. They were young French Canadians, very generous souls, going away far from home to be missionaries. There were few American and Filipino Jesuit priests running the Ateneo de Davao College.

The coming of seminarians to become future Filipino Diocesan Priests in Davao would be a new experience to all of us seminarians and Catholics of Davao Provinces. The first priests ordained were already in the sixties with Father Acasio, Father Banzon, Father Camenia; later, Father Buen, Father Antalan, Father Lazo, Father Tusoy, Father Nabayra, Father Birondo, Father Jose Sison.

It was in these times in Mindanao and Davao that the Saint Francis Xavier Minor Seminary and the Saint Francis Xavier Regional Major Seminary would continue to educate and graduate priests and ex-seminarians up to today.At the beginning and for many years, the seminaries were manned with the PME Fathers.Today since 1974, these are run by Filipino priests.

However, today, most dioceses in Mindanao have their own College Seminary. There are now three Major Seminaries in Mindanao, one in Ozamis, opened in 1980, and the third one is in Cagayan de Oro, opened in 1985. Since then hundreds of priests were educated and became priests from these seminaries, and also many hundreds more of ex-seminarians came out of these seminaries. The talents and energies of these ex-seminarians and ex-priests remain untapped by the Catholic Church.

The foundation of Seminaries first in Davao is one of the major legacies and contributions of the PME Socity in Davao and in Mindanao.( by JP Mercado, Jr., updated 5/1/2000)

Emcor provides PCs to Mindanao homes

MINDANAO'S biggest retail company of appliances, electronic products and motorcycles is focusing its efforts in providing homes with personal computers through a sales and services program called Advance Technology System (ATS).

Emcor, Inc., the only Davao-based appliance and motorcycle retail firm included in the 2006 listing of the Philippines' Top 1,000 corporations, sell computer units on installment terms to the thousands of homes in Davao and other parts of Mindanao.

Severo dela Cruz, Emcor president, said ATS is the company's contribution to the national effort to make Filipinos, especially the young, computer literate in order for the country "not only to survive but also excel in the world's increasingly competitive technology-driven economy."

Actually, Emcor's management had long thought of launching a program that would democratize ownership of computers through affordable down payment and easy installment terms.

However, fast obsolescence of previous computer models had prevented the firm from going full blast with ATS, as there was real danger of the units becoming outdated even before they could be fully paid.

Fortunately, the advent five years ago of the Pentium series whose makers have been able to slow down obsolescence drastically had given impetus to ATS, said dela Cruz.

Today, Emcor's 50 plus stores in the country have been able to sell a computer unit to more than 20,000 homes for a down payment of as low as P7,000 and monthly amortization of over P3,000 for a stretch of 24 months, he said.

"This is really still a modest number considering that Emcor has current exposure of 60,000 motorcycles on three-year installment plan and 120,000 home appliances payable in two years," dela Cruz said.

Emcor, Inc. was started 48 years ago in Davao City as Engineering and Machinery Corp., a franchise dealer of International Harvester, by pioneering entrepreneur Jesus V. del Rosario, who set up Kawasaki Motors (Phils.) Corp., K-Servico Trade, Inc., International Writing Systems Phils. Corp., International Elevator and Equipment, Inc., JVR Foundation and local units of Panasonic Group of Companies.

RP and India have most number of call centers

AN OWNER of a call center and founder of a business school in Davao City has claimed that Philippines and India have the most number of existing call centers in the world.

But Joji Ilagan Bian, owner of the Six-Eleven call center and founder of the Joji Ilagan Bian business school, failed to reveal the number of existing call centers in the country at present.

This developed as Bian announced the opening of another call center in Marawi City on December 25.

Bian said Davao City should work harder in developing human resources for contact centers.

"We need to have enough human resources since India has already given way to the Philippines. Let's master English language, it is the language of the century," she said.

Bian said the city ranks third in English proficiency out of at least 12 cities in the country.

"I was in Manila when I was given a copy of the information and it's true," Bian said.

The information was delivered by an officer of a medical transcription school in Davao City, Lizabel "Wit" Holganza, the president and school administrator of the MTC Academy, saying it was the result of the latest survey conducted by a Californian-based organization.

Earlier, Holganza said Dabawenyos have the five elements to be proficient in English -- understanding, reading, speaking, writing, and thinking.

i dont like the idea of some councillors who looked at that as something immoral and thus should be demolished...we should be proud of our own local artists...they are blessings to our city...if it is not really possible to let it remain to where it stands now, then perhaps they can propose a place where it will stand and be adored by many...i am even encouraging local artists to do the same...maximize their talents...i have seen the original statue done by michelangelo, and it is amazing....you can really see his genius...and most interesting, he chose david because of its political significance to the city of florence, italy...by the way, the original statue is in florence now visited by thousands of tourists everyday...6.50 euros is the entrance fee to the museum..florence was a small city in medieval time which became the richest in the whole europe. the banking system is originally from florence, and the name of the medici family was of course in the front. this family was the richest in this time and the great patron for many artists...the city of florence was like david in allegory. florence was nothing, but then in power for hundreds of years. david is like that, or florence is like david. he rose to power from nothing...that can be a great symbol for davao....we are nothing few years ago, but we are climbing the ladder of success....i think now is the time to think about that....florence produced big names in the history of art and economics....dante and his divine comedy, machaivili and his the prince, you can also visit the tomb of gallileo in santa croce, the tomb of marconi, the inventor of radio, donatello is in florence, and not to mention our michelangelo..fray angelico is another big name in painting....wow...florence is great, and that is from nothing....all of these artists were hated during their time...their works were almost lost in history because of the fraction going on in the city itself during their time...but then, they simply managed to go on and continue building their names in different fields...we can do that also in davao...we can be like david....

in the issue of the illegalities of the work...i think we can manage to hold it back and going on by encouraging local artists....duplication? it does not make sense to me....there is no original in this world...almost everything, if not all, has been done many thousand years ago...just remember that Lorenzo Bernini, one of the great architects of St. Peter's Basilica in rome made a replica of david, which can be seen in Borghese museum, though his david is quite different from that of Michelangelo, but the spirit is there...michelangelo was the one who scultured david....not only that, you can also see a replica in florence itself in the front of their city hall located in the main square. it is standing in the place where the original statue of david was standing before. the original was removed for safekeeping and it is located now in the academia museum...but the question of replicating should not be the issue here. we cannot just say anything against our local artists, especially if you are supposed to be the promoter of the treasure of the city, because you are city officials...promote what we have....attract more tourists as possible...hail to our local artists, and to our local treasures....

Davao has been ready for an expressway 10 years ago. It's a big relief for the motorists as they don't have to get through congested downtown thoroughfares in going to either northern or southern part of the city.
