Peace Tower Condo-Hotel (http://www.brudirect.com/DailyInfo/News/Archive/June05/100605/nite27.htm) sana sa riverfront cbd buena mano to... :) rustyboi February 10th, 2006, 02:06 PM ^^ interesting! a high-rise for davao. updates pls! :) bustero February 10th, 2006, 03:36 PM Looks like isla reta Dave! Peace Tower buhay pa ba to:) bel1river February 10th, 2006, 04:37 PM About 3-4 years ago, I saw a billboard announcing the construction of the Peace Tower in Bajada (corner of Buhangin Road and JP Laurel). It would have been constructed across from where the proposed Medical Mission Hospital is to be built. It would have been a sight to see both buildings being erected at the same time. Any word on the empty Durian Hotel building? I've been enjoying the pictures posted on this forum. They really bring me "home". Daghang salamat, guys!! KulasKusgan February 10th, 2006, 05:27 PM ^^ welcome to SSC bel1river... enjoy! @ bustero: I believe its Malipano-Pearl Farm pics except this: more on davao: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b74/paulkrps/more/356527208OLMMHU_ph.jpg ^^ This is Paradise Island Resort in Caliclic, Babak Samal. @ junax & bel1river: may duda ako sa Peace Tower na yan. i dunno iba ang kutob ko. parang front lang for something else. yon lang ay kutob ko lang. unta mali ko. re: Durian Hotel, foreclosed ng Metrobank yata. I hope it would reopen like what happened to Cebu Plaza. After MBTC's foreclosure, they tapped Marco Polo to manage the hotel. @ kuya pol: i think Peace Tower din yong nasa tapat ng Robinsons duol sa Kutips Grill. ive seen that too in mid-late 90s. bel1river February 10th, 2006, 06:40 PM Glad to have found this forum. What's curious to me is how long it's taking for the foreclosing bank to turn the Durian Hotel into a performing asset right away. It's a good thing the bankrupt Millenium City project (entrance of Belisario Heights) has been taken over by the Robisons Group (in partnership with Ssecurity Bank) although, I understand, it will purely be a high-end residential development. Totally horizontal and no vertical dev. Earlier threads asked about any Ayala Land developments in Davao. Well, I know that a few years back ALI bought Bago Inigo from the Inigo family. A little bird told me that ALI can't really move on developing the area (over a hundred has.) because a significant portion of the property lies over a critical watershed. KulasKusgan February 11th, 2006, 04:06 AM re: durian hotel. if theres any takers or investors, like in the case of cebu plaza, was taken out by federal land inc and sought partnership with Marco Polo hotel group. i think reviving durian hotel is easier than samal casino resort. samal casino's case is much complicated since it lies on a CARP area with foreign partners. kolasas http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b74/paulkrps/kolasas.jpg the old municipal court building on the right will house the proposed "Museo Dabawenyo" tj_brewed February 11th, 2006, 09:22 AM hay, i wish there is something that we can do para mas modaghan ang investments sa davao city. Call center to open in April from http://www.mindanaotimes.com.ph/story.php?id=9984 By Carmelito Q. Francisco ANOTHER call center, which will have its own school for call center applicants, will open in April. Joji Ilagan-Bian of the Joji Ilagan Career Center Foundation Inc. said her company will open the first 20 seats in the call center. Simultaneously, the company will also hold training for those who want to work in call centers so they will have the necessary skills. The trainees will also undergo 120-hour on-the-job training at the call center that she is setting up. Bian said she is targeting to run a 200-seater call center, but that she has to develop first employees to hone their capabilities in their jobs. Also, Ms. Bian said she will set up a language institute that will focus on improving English language proficiency of students. “The problem is the lack of human resources,” she noted, claiming that turnover in the call center business, particularly those based in Metro Manila, is very fast considering that the pay is only good for those residents near the call centers but very disadvantageous for those coming from the provinces as they still need to pay house rent and other incidentals. A P16,000 salary, she said, is not enough for someone from the province who has to relocate in Manila just to get employed, so when the employee finds another job, he or she eventually leaves the call center. Also, some employees get tired of their jobs because they have to stay at their places doing the same thing for eight hours. “So loyalty is higher for employees coming from the provinces, but lower for those living in Metro Manila who can easily access other jobs,” she added. So some call centers in Metro Manila are outsourcing to the provinces, she added. Her call center, Ms. Bian said, will focus on small American companies that are being ignored by call centers. tj_brewed February 11th, 2006, 11:35 AM Si Don diay ko dave nice miting u binisaya lang ko kay lisud na cge tag englsh kay c ge ko kamali! cguro g baligya na sa Pryce na katung condotel sa Dusit pero katung nakita na ko na model didto sa Pryce Plaza murag 20-storey lang man katung sa Dusit 30-storey man Don! welcome sa Skyscrapercity.... :) maayo kaau na nabalita! by the way....suggestion lang nako ni: ok man pud siguro no if magbutang og mga centers ang Davao sa major cities sa Phils promoting Davao? baskin gamay ra gud! kanang booth ra ba sa mall or something..so that people would know what Davao has to offer. When i was there, they had this exhibit about Cebu! Travelers and investors alike got the chance to hear and see what Cebu got to offer. by the way, ask ko lang! its been 3 years since i last went home sa Davao...in terms of development and investments, are we really behind now sa other key cities in Mindanao like CDO perhaps? ive read this news from pia kc posted sa forum ng CDO. ofcourse im happy that other cities are improving! pero worried lang coz basi na stagnant nuon ang growth sa Davao. :runaway: KulasKusgan February 11th, 2006, 12:17 PM yes true, CDO got more investments because basically CDO is an industrial city together with Iligan. at ok lang na mabigyan din ng chance ang ibang cities like now butuan which has lined up several big projects. di naman nagkakalayo in terms of devt ang mga regl centers ng mindanao. lamang lang ng konti or maybe isang paligo ang davao. pansin ko lang sa devt ng davao with duterte, parang segmentized. first thing he did, public order. establish 911, approve important city ordinances like anti-smoking, firecracker ban, children's code, women code, anti-aids, etc. second, beautification. pinapaliguan at pinabango ang ciudad. i hope this year, level-up na rin ang priority perhaps infra. btw, id like to share this. old and new updates regarding davao ties with palau. ngayon ko lang nalaman na may ties pala ang davao & palau. alam ko lang dati within BIMP EAGA lang like manado, bitung, brunei, etc. PIA Press Release 12/09/2004 Davao eyed as major supplier for Palau Davao City (9 December) -- A former senator of the Republic of Palau yesterday said Davao City can be a major supplier for his tiny nation’s needs as he announced the arrival of the maiden voyage of the cargo ship in Palau, bearing cement from Davao. Palau businessman and former Palau Senator Moses Udolong told the Club 888 Forum at the Marco Polo Hotel said the cargo ship departed from Davao on Monday (December 6) and docked at Korror, Palau yesterday (December 8). He said the ship carried 21 container vans of cement but it can carry up to 150 container vans. The cargo ship will call on the port of Davao every 15 days, he said. He said Palau businessmen are keen on construction materials, foodstuffs, and general merchandise. “We found the products needed back home to be cheap here,” he said. He said they import their basic commodities mostly from the US and Japan. “But we discovered that sourcing our requirements here is easier because we are just more than an hour’s plane ride away from Davao City,” he said. He said the Palau government is working out a system for doing business with local officials and the private sector. “Once we finalize the arrangements, we could ship out other products from here,” he said. He said Davao’s rich resources could supply Palau’s neighbors in the lower part of the Pacific. “What our officials are working now is to seek amendments on the laws on agricultural products which specify that these products can only be accessed from the US and Japan,” he said. He said the moment the laws are relaxed, Davao fruits and other agricultural products will easily find their way to Palau’s markets. Palau’s main industries are tourism and fishing, he said. Udolong said Palau’s tourism industry lure about 80,000 visitors, mostly from Japan and Taiwan. It generates some US$10 million in local revenues, he said. (PIA/pdb) Asian Spirit aims to double size of BAe 146 fleet and extend reach Philippine regional carrier Asian Spirit plans to launch international services using its BAe 146 fleet, which will double in size during 2006 despite the loss of an aircraft late last year. Asian Spirit says its first international route will connect the southern Philippine city of Davao with Palau in Micronesia from March. The carrier will use one of its two 83-seat 146-100s on the service, which will originate in Manila. Asian Spirit now mainly uses the regional jet to connect Manila with small island destinations, but it is looking at launching several international routes, including to greater China. http://www.skyliner-aviation.de/photos/icons/01VHNJZas-ICON.jpg Asian Spirit Asian Spirit took delivery of its first 146 early last year and initially operated one -100 and one 100-seat -200. But industry sources say the -200 has been written off after the nose was damaged in November during landing at Catarman Island. Sources say the 146-200, a former National Jet aircraft that was registered in Australia as VH-NJW before moving to the Philippines as RP-C2995, overran the runway and ended up in a rice field. There were no serious injuries, but it would be too difficult to recover the aircraft from the remote location to make a repair worthwhile. Asian Spirit took delivery of its second 146-100 last month and is scheduled to receive another 146-200 later this month. It will take a second 146-200 around mid-year. Originally, Asian Spirit was committed to leasing five 146s from BAE Systems, but as a result of the hull loss it is now only committed to leasing four with options on another three. President Antonio Buendia says the carrier also looked at acquiring two 146s from Bhutan’s Druk Air, but prefers to enter into lease-purchase deals with BAE Systems that include maintenance and pilot training. “So many offer cheap 146s, but we don’t know how much they will cost to fix,” Buendia says. The carrier also operates four de Havilland Canada Dash 7s, one BAe ATP, two Indonesian Aerospace CN-235s and two Let L-410s. It also wet-leases two 60-seat NAMC YS-11s from Philippine carrier Aboidiz and Buendia says it has agreed to wet-lease a third from March. Davao City Investment and Promotion Center chief Roberto Teo said a number of big-ticket projects which are being identified and lined-up for implementation are enumerated in the approved Comprehensive Development Plan of Davao. CDP has laid down development initiatives of the city government up to year 2021. Topping the list in the social sector is the Anti-Crime Prevention program as Mayor Rodrigo Duterte believes that peace and order will pave the way for progress and development. He said the city government also prioritizes implementation of the Comprehensive Shelter Development Program as it has recognized the need for housing units due to high population growth due to migration. “We see such program as another priority taking into account that we have an estimated backlog of 4,000 housing units annually,” he said. The city also puts premium on education as it wants to erase illiteracy in the city “because we believe the real empowerment of the people has its key on education,” he added. Women and children sector is also an important part of the city’s development plan which also highlights the maternal and child-health nutrition program. “Our leaders believe that the success and prosperity of a locality can be measured through the state of our women and children,” he said. Meanwhile, the CDP also lines up necessary infrastructure projects to respond to the city’s growing economy. Among them are the light rail transit, modern overland terminal for north and south bound passengers, expansion of Sasa Wharf, sports complex; a reclamation project in Sta. Ana Wharf with major components such as cultural park and convention center complex, a business park, a marina complex and a regional industrial center. The city government will also be setting up flood-control projects in low-lying areas. The city government will also pursue other long-term development programs in cooperation with non-government organizations and national government agencies. Among these are the Three Ridges Integrated Development Program for the Tagurano-Catigan-Eden area; the Davao River Integrated Development Program; Integrated Agro-forestry cum Ancestral Domain Management Program; and the Solid Waste Management Program. De Leon, Mindanao Bureau Chief, BusinessWorld (9 Aug 2004) DAVAO CITY, PHILIPPINES: The city government is seriously looking at a "simple railway commuter system," which could be developed before the end of the decade. Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said the Davao City was planning a commuter system patterned after small train-based systems in Taiwan's regional centers, which he said could even be cheaper than building a coastal road. Mr. Duterte noted, however, that there were no estimates yet and that all the city government could do now was to start planning for such project. "We're not thinking of sophisticated commuter railway systems and heavy infrastructure similar to those in Metro Manila but simple ones like what I saw in Taiwan during my last visit there," he said. The mayor explained that the railway project, should it push through, would have lesser land to expropriate and thus, would have reduced court work for the government. A coastal highway has been discussed for the city since 10 years ago to connect the northern and southern fringes where industries are attracting a big number of commuters during rush hours. The city has over 1.4 million population, the largest for any city outside Metro Manila, distributed to over 2,400 square kilometers of land. Two years ago, initial estimates placed billions of pesos could be spent on a coastal highway depending on how long it would be although city engineers said it could range from 20 to 40 kilometers north and south of the city proper. The bigger problem aside from funding, they said, was years of delay since thousands of families, including those with homes on titled properties, would be affected. Mr. Duterte said he was not promising the railway system to residents during his term. "All I have is another three years and it might take another six or seven years for it to be realized," he said noting that what he could do in the meantime was ask the city planners to seriously look into it. JAPANESE RECOMMENDED It would be recalled that the railway commuter system plan for Davao City was recommended by Japanese consultants to the Regional Development Council as early as 1997 through the Japan-assisted Davao Integrated Development Program. Based on that plan, the railway system should start development before the end of this decade. Davao's current city administrator, Wendel Avisado, and planning chief, Mario Luis Jacinto, supervised the Japan-funded integrated development plan under regional council chairman Jesus Ayala, former adviser on Mindanao affairs for President Corazon C. Aquino in the late 1980s and a consistent supporter of Mr. Duterte. Even transport consultants of the Growth with Equity in Mindanao program, a United States Agency for International Development-funded initiative, has endorsed a railway-based commuter system for Davao. In a previous interview with BusinessWorld, consultants of the US-funded program said it would be good if the local government could look into that project now before the transport situation and squatting in the city's coastal areas get worse. While the same consultants noted a Davao railway system could work, they noted though that economic studies on the Mindanao railway system indicated it would not work due to limited volume of cargoes and passengers on the island as well as the relatively short-distance routes to be served. A railway system, it was underscored, would only be efficient when there is big commuter demand for short routes and enough cargoes for long-haul routes. tj_brewed February 12th, 2006, 06:43 AM maayong hapon don! tj_brewed February 12th, 2006, 06:52 AM this one is an old new clipping...got it before ATF 2006...just wanto share with ya all.. Why in Davao? By Ms. Joji Ilagan Bian Published : 2006-01-12 Davao, the city of blooms from islands to highlands is the site of the 25th ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF), which will be held on January 13 to 21, 2006. Indeed, Davao City is blooming and booming from islands to highlands. Investments in terms of total capitalization of businesses continues to surge from only P62 billion in 2000 to P69 billion in 2001, P80 billion in 2002, P84 billion in 2003, and a whopping P118.5 billion in 2004. The sharp growth is very evident in the city’s tourism, construction, agriculture, and export sectors. Tourist arrivals based on air passenger traffic and hotel occupancy volume have been consistently increasing since 2000 placing Davao City’s total tourism receipts at P5.22 billion in January-June 2005 alone, a 13-percent increase from P4.62 billion generated in the same period last year. Similarly, this city had recorded an unprecedented increase in the value of private building construction, which skyrocketed to P7.4 billion last year from only P773 million in 2001. So did exports, shooting up to $993 million in 2004 from $848 million in 2003 and $738 million in 2002, with the balance of trade further widening in Davao City’s favor. “These figures are making Davao City even more attractive to tourists, many of whom are corporate executives and entrepreneurs on vacation who can’t ignore a business opportunity when they see one,” said ATF 2006 Secretary General and Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation Executive Director Daniel Corpuz. Davao is the capital of the Southern Mindanao region and one of the world’s largest cities in terms of land area, spanning 244,000 hectares. This sprawling metropolis has emerged as the business, investment and tourism hub of Southern Philippines. Citing Davao City as the next pillar of Philippine tourism, Durano said it was President Arroyo’s personal choice as the venue for ATF 2006. The 25th Asean Tourism Forum (ATF) slated in Davao City is expected to significantly boost the economy in Mindanao and prop up investor confidence in the region and the rest of the Philippines. Imagine the kind of international exposure that Davao City and the rest of Mindanao will gain from the ATF, which will be participated in by throngs of delegates from the 10 member-countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the major wholesale travel trade buyers from all over the world, all translating to thousands of foreign and local visitors flocking to Southern Philippines during that nine-day event. Tourism had contributed substantially to Mindanao’s expanding economy, which posted growth rates of 4.4 percent in 2002 and 4.5 percent in 2003 and consistently had accounted for around nine million of national employment. There have been remarkable increments in the region’s air and sea transport volumes in terms of both passengers and cargo because of increased tourism activities, particularly in Southern and Northern Mindanao, which posted more than 1.2 million foreign and domestic tourists. The international airport in Southern Mindanao’s tourism and investment hub – recorded around 1.4 million incoming and outgoing passengers in 2004 while hotel occupancy rates posted a 6.5 percent increase in the January-June 2005 from its year-ago level. The impact of these developments can be felt throughout the region’s economic landscape, especially in the food, transport, hotel, resort, entertainment, recreation, retail, and services sectors. Quite evidently, the government is taking advantage of ATF 2006 to launch the development of Mindanao as a tourist haven and Davao as the center of the tourism industry in Mindanao and present it to the world in that perspective. This move will thus correct the wrong perception that Mindanao is a not a safe place to visit, to invest in, or even to stay. Participating in the ATF are the 10 Asean-member countries, their exhibitors from various sectors of the tourism industry, and 470 buyers and media from six continents. All these translate to thousands of foreign guests and tourists, who will soon see Mindanao in a totally different light. Why in Davao ? The answers are obvious! Askal82 February 12th, 2006, 06:53 AM @tj brewed!! The news is amazing!! Wow!! Davao investment code amendment targets call centers Business World (Philippines) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Davao City - The local government will implement recommendations from Makati-based consulting firm SGV to revise its investment incentives code by granting new perks to information and communication technology (ICT) services. A ranking city official said the administration of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is determined to make Davao Mindanao's information and communications technology (ICT) hub within the near term. Two years ago, Davao was the first to attract a contact center in Mindanao until Cagayan de Oro succeeded in having a private industrial park declared an ICT zone in the first quarter of 2005, resulting in two call centers relocating there within months of such designation by the Malacanang presidential palace. Robert Teo, head of the Davao City Investment and Promotion Center, said key to the city's drive to attract contact center firms is its investment code, which was recently reviewed by SGV. The code, drafted two decades back, does not provide incentives for ICT projects, although it recognizes telecommunications projects as a priority. The traditional thinking among local executives back then was for the city to focus on its strong points, namely: agribusiness, tourism and property development. This led to expanding capital for tropical fruit plantations and related facilities, as well as a rash in the construction of new hotels, development of resorts and investments in new residential subdivisions all over the city. Mr. Teo said the city council is aware of the current gap in the investments code and is expected to pass a measure soon that would include ICT as a preferred investment activity. He added that his group is also coordinating with the private sector, specifically the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, academic institutions and groups in the ICT sector, to help draft the new code. The proposed amendment to the incentives code extends the duration of exemption from securing a mayor's permit to three years from the prevailing two years, and offers a two-year holiday on property taxes. Even more important than perks, Mr. Teo said, is the fact the city offers reliable telecommunications infrastructure and the technical manpower suited for ICT investments like contact centers, as well as stable peace and order. Still, only Cyber City has established a contact center here - in late 2004. Cagayan de Oro, meanwhile, has Link2Support, Inc. and Trade telle Corp. division of Cisco Systems, which both came in during the first half of 2005 after President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo issued Proclamation No. 770, designating Pueblo de Oro IT Park in Cagayan de Oro as an IT Ecozone. The current Pueblo IT Park is part of the 360-hectare Pueblo de Oro Township, which includes residential villages, educational institutions, shopping malls, a golf club and an international-class hotel. As early as four years ago, Davao's Trade and Industry officials filed a recommendation to the President for either the city's Landco or Digital Interface buildings in Bajada district to be declared as an information technology zone, but the recommendation was not approved. The two buildings currently host several firms engaged in ICT services. tj_brewed February 12th, 2006, 07:12 AM eto plano na naman! ehehehehhehe sana naman po matuloy ang mga plans sa davao... :soon: :soon: :soon: Regional dev't plan to boost Davao economy February 06, 2006 THE Davao Regional Development Plan (2004 to 2010) focuses on three main objectives. These are increased economic growth, more livelihood opportunities, and reduced poverty incidence to strengthen the region's economy and as a result augmenting the quality of life of people in the Davao Region. According to the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) in Southern Mindanao, the economic plan is expected to generate a total of 745,995 jobs from all sectors by 2010 -- 311,802 of which are from the agriculture, fishery, and forestry sectors, 89,854 from industries, and 344,339 from services. Moreover, the development plan is also targeting a reduction of 11.5 percent (from 31.5 percent to 20 percent) of poor families in the region. To achieve such goal Neda created "Industry Clustering" as its key strategy. "This strategy is divided into eight commodities and services in which each region will have to focus on," Neda said. The following industry clusters are: for Davao City is the Information Communication and Technology services, which can generate a considerable number of jobs and an additional investment of P200 million. Davao del Norte, however, would take charge of the banana commodity. It is expected to generate 150,000 new jobs by 2010, an additional investment of P1.1 billion and potential revenue of $4.5 billion. Davao del Sur would focus on the mango commodity, which could generate 68,000 new jobs, an additional investment of P170 million and export earnings of $140 million. The coconut industry would be the main commodity of Davao Oriental. A total of 12,000 new jobs are expected to be created by 2010. Also, an additional investment of P1.6 billion and export income of $800 million will be generated. The Compostela Valley province would focus on the mining industry. It is presumed to spawn 140,000 new jobs and an additional investment of P97 million. Other commodities that are being highlighted are the seaweed industry, which could generate 6,902 jobs, an additional investment of P118 million and export earnings of $2.11 million. The wood industry could generate 140,000 new jobs, an additional investment of P320 million, and export income of $70 million. Ecotourism is also being considered in the region, which is expected to create 8,580 jobs. The development plan is also planning to promote durian and pomelo, which are small commodities with strong domestic demand. These products also has an increased demand in the US and Europe market. Lawyer Jesus Ayala chairs the Regional Development Council. Neda, however, acts as the secretariat of Davao Regional Development Plan. Experience Davao's Kadayawan Festival this third week of august 2006. for more info visit www.kadayawan.com or www.davaoweb.com Madayaw - a warm and friendly greeting derived from the Dabawenyo word "dayaw" that means good, valuable, superior or beautiful. Such is "Kadayawan," a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living. Although already a customary practice of the indigenous people of Davao, the thanksgiving festival was institutionalized in 1986 to unite the Dabawenyos after the turbulent Martial Law years. It was then called "Apo Duwaling," a contraction of the famous icons of the city - namely Mt. Apo, Durian and Waling-waling. Two years later, it was renamed "Kadayawan sa Dabaw" to better reflect the merry spirit and indigenous theme of the celebration. Today, Kadayawan has metamorphosed into a festival of festivals, the mother of many other festivals in the region as it honors Davao's artistic, cultural and historical heritage, its past personified by the ancestral "lumads", its people as they celebrate on the streets, and its floral industry as they parade in full regalia in thanksgiving for the blessings bestowed on the city. Kadayawan sa Dabaw is an enriching experience with a difference as it explores the past, present and future of the Davaoeños, the Mindanaoans, the Filipinos. Its sights and sounds remain unparalleled. Be part of the experience. Du-aw na sa Kadayawan! Du-aw na sa Davao! Tuesday, February 14, 2006 Malagos bird show back in Malagos AFTER a six-month promotional tour in Manila, the famous bird show at Malagos Garden Resort is back. Dr. Bo Puentespina, son of the owners of the Malagos Garden Resort, said their short stint in Metro Manila and other parts of the country is part of their advocacy to educate the people, especially the children, on the importance of birds and other animals. Puentespina admitted that their venture in Manila is also their way of earning more so they could support the needs of their pet birds, which now total to about 300. He humbly admitted that at the moment their financial capability to support their birds is quite not enough. They need at least P20,000 a week for the birds' food and medicines. Puentespina, however, said despite the financial constraints they never wane in their advocacy. He said in 2003 alone, about 100,000 schoolchildren watched their show in Malagos. There are invitations for them to perform in foreign countries like the Middle East but Puentespina said they are not yet through with their mission in the country. The bird show started in 2003. KulasKusgan February 15th, 2006, 06:17 PM Thursday, February 16, 2006 A sense of history at Riverford Nature Park THE Hall of Davao History at Riverford Nature Park, Catalunan Grande, Davao City stands ready to answer questions on early Davao History in mural and bas-relief form, according to Aida Rivera Ford, park owner. During the inauguration last January 21, Ms. Ford declared that those who have no sense of their own history will go through life with a void in their consciousness and vagueness in their identity. Among the historical figures featured in the hall are Jose Oyanguren, Narciso Claveria and Datu Bago. Soledad Duterte cut the ceremonial ribbon, assisted by councilor Mabel-Sunga Acosta who also delivered a message in behalf of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, Delia Dango and Dr. Perla Palma Gil. Among the distinguished guests who graced the occasion were Justice Cesar Nitorreda, Mike Utley and his wife, Magdalena Amigleo and family, Ony Basa who gave a stirring message and members of the Davao Historical Society. The Batu Bago operetta composed by Ms. Ford was beautifully rendered by Dave Fortuna, Anna Karenina Fortuna, Harold Pedia with accompaniment by Greg Canceran who just got back from a long stay in Canada. The full force of the Ford Academy of the Arts faculty sang "Madayaw Dabaw" also composed by FAA president Ms. Ford. The Hall of Davao History at Riverford Nature Park is open to Dabawenyos and tourists. Blessed with a fertile land and a kind weather (it is outside the "typhoon belt"), Davao City's foremost claim to fame is agricultural. It is called the "Orchid Capital" and the "Fruit Basket" of the Philippines; and from its vast plantations and busy ports, the large, the flawless , yellow skin bananas are shipped to various continents. To emphasize its gratitude to its generous land, the city's most colorful event that take place on August called the "Kadayawan (which means both "superior" and "beautiful") Festival", required that 80 percent of the materials used for participating floats must consist of flowers, fruits, and vegetables. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/sml6.jpg Davao City is also where you will find the country's tallest peak, Mount Apo, with an elevation of 9,691 feet. Souring in the forest tops and air streams of this mountain full of fables and legends, is the mighty Philippine eagle (phitecophaga jefferyi)-perhaps the biggest eagle in the world basing on its wide wingspan of seven feet. This majestic eagle that was threatened with extinction at one time , has been fortunately saved with the establishment of the Philippine Eagle Center in 1987 which has successfully bred 14 eaglets in captivity. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/sml4.jpg Thriving in the moistness of the thick tropical rain forest of Mount Apo are beautiful orchids, the rarest and most prized of all is called the "waling waling" (vanda sanderiana). Unique in this region are delicious, exotic fruits like durian, pomelo, and mangosteen. If you are searching for ways to describe the Dabawenyos, as the local people are called, like the durian they can be tough and thorny; and at the same time, soft and luscious. Like its favorite emblem, the eagle, they have souring ambitions backed with a fierceness and fortitude to make them happen. Like the State of Texas, this city talks big. It is the largest city in the world, with a land area of 2,400 square kilometers or 244,000 hectares. For comparison, Cebu City has 280 square kilometers; Hongkong has 1,103, while New York has 1,214 and Paris (city center) has only 105. Davao City has perhaps the single largest banana plantation in the world, Tadeco, with an area of 11,000 hectars. For party animals - Davao has one of the largest bars in the country (if not the largest) - Venue! And even its disco called the Harana, has a playground so large it includes an open-air basketball court. Mindanao, which Davao is part of, is considered the "Promised Land" of the Philippines with its rich, largely untapped natural resources. It has a lush soil where practically everything grows so easily, a mild tropical climate spared by typhoons, timber, precious minerals like gold, and seas that abound with highly prized species like tuna (so plentiful that an old joke quips that their fish die of old age rather than being caught). And among the cities in Mindanao, it is Davao that is leading the way in tapping the island's potentials, including tourism. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/sml3.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/sml2.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/sml1.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/dabawcollage.jpg KulasKusgan February 16th, 2006, 12:14 AM paspasan nato nig abot og 500 posts kay naa nay bag-ong davao thread. @ tj, pwede pa ma-edit nato ang bag-ong thread from davao city to just 'davao: from islands to highlands' kay para apil nato ang sikbit nga mga lungsod or even davao region. Thursday, February 16, 2006 Showcasing of Davao products to continue THE positive result in showcasing regional products at the Davao International Airport during the Asean Tourism Forum last month in Davao City led concerned regional officials to work for their continued exposure at the city's gateway. Products on display, which captured the attention of foreign visitors, were the fruits and other processed products such as banana chips, virgin coconut oil and others. This could signal the all out campaign led by the Department of Trade and Industry, which is pushing for the One Town One Product-Philippines (Otop-Philippines) Program. In an earlier interview, DTI-XI regional director Merly Cruz said the Otop-Philippines encourages micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to produce and market distinct products or services using indigenous raw materials and manpower. She said DTI has intensified its campaign and focused its efforts in raising the awareness level of all local government units nationwide. Local government units are also encouraged to create and promote a conducive business environment and prioritize Otop-Philippines program and activities in their area. The local chief executives of every city and municipality take the lead in identifying, developing and promoting specific product or service, which has a competitive advantage. Along this line, DTI-XI information officer Jenny Mendoza said two of the region's newest products that are being enrolled under the Otop are the Chocalate de San Isidro of Davao del Norte and the hog meat of Davao City. She said there are also steps being undertaken such as forging partnership with private organizations in order to promote aggressively the program but it is still under negotiation. Under the Otop program, inter-agencies will provide MSMEs a comprehensive package or assistance including business counseling, skills and entrepreneurial training, product design and development, marketing and introduction of appropriate technologies. Patterned after Japan's One Village One Product (Ovop) project, Otop has already been established in Thailand, Vietnam, Malawi, Cambodia, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Indonesia as an effective tool of poverty alleviation particularly in the rural areas. Craig Hubbard of Technica One Business Solutions during yesterday's Club 888 forum at The Marco Polo Davao said that although this is a long term plan, the Northern Territory government offered to help improve business activities in the Eaga region through an active portal. He said it will initially come up with a design that will consist of a directory of traders with their specific products. The Northern Territory government has initially set Australian $150,000 to fund the project. "When this materializes the listing of traders and their products can be looked up by interested persons all over the world and hopefully create business partnership," he said. But he said the listing will only be limited to the members of the BIMP Eaga where traders can register on line. "All the trader have to do is to provide the contact details as well as the product details when they register," he said. He said once they are enrolled they could start selling their products in the global market. Hubbard also said that as far as they are concerned they don't set requirements although he said the requirements could perhaps be determined per country. He said they will launch the project by the 23rd of May and information could be accessed through www.bebp.org. "We are trying to put together the data and we can get about 250 businesses when the portal will formally open although we could expand to a thousand in the future," he said. Hubbard said they have to establish a strong organization behind the project even as he said that they do this to help small countries within the Eaga. He clarified that the project is not a commercial one and they don't expect any return even if it becomes fully established. He also said that if they all agree to go eCommerce then they will move to eCommerce but what they are anticipating is for the traders to also become exporters. There are monitoring scheme that is being set he said and they consider hits as one important gauge to success as well as the number of traders enrolled and the links on marketing. "If we have good stories as well as good responses then we could say that the project has succeed and if it's a failure we will have to improve on it," he said. He said the project is also in coordination with Microsoft and the different business councils within the Eaga region. (PIA/pdbanzon) [top] tj_brewed February 16th, 2006, 12:26 AM http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/dabaw30.jpg Titles and Monikers of Davao City Orchid Capital of the Philippines There are beautifully vivid reasons why Davao is called a “City in Bloom”. Aside from the presence of vast plantations and garden resorts that grow rare and exotic orchids and ornamentals, the City is specifically known among florists all over the world for its famous waling-waling, considered as one of the most beautiful orchids. The Waling-waling or vanda sanderana grows in natural abundance in its territory, at the foot of Mt. Apo. Orchids just love to grow majestically in the City because of its typhoon-free weather. Add to that the fact that the city has more than 1,000 square kilometers of lush tropical forest (or about 47% of its total land area) that provided an environment conducive for rare plants to thrive and flourish. Another factor is the rich fertile soil of the city that can virtually make every wind-blown seed grow and bear fruit even without the benefit of human intervention. Virtually, all ingredients are present for Davao City to blossom and bloom magically like the waling-waling. All these factors contributed to the eventual declaration of Davao City as the official “Orchid Capital of the Philippines” as declared by then President Corazon Aquino. Fruit Basket of the Philippines- the City of Durian burg The freshest tropical fruits are always ripe for the picking in a City called Fruit Basket of the Philippines. Whether you’ll go for the juiciest watermelon, the sweetest mango, the more succulent pomelo, rambutan, or go subtly fruit ferocious with banana, mangosteen, lanzones, strawberry, pineapple, avocado, langka, buko, or simply settle with a bowl of fresh fruit salad to end the long list, whatever fibrous or juicy fruits you have in mind, you’ll definitely have your fill in Davao City. Orchards and fruit plantations continually make the city livable if only for its produce of the freshest fruits giving visitors a glimpse of what it would be like in the Garden of Eden with the exotic Durian (the King of the Fruits or the Fruit of the Gods) serving as the fruit of good and evil with its strong aroma (or pungent odor) overpowered by its heavenly taste which you would not want to exchange for anything. Come to the City of Durianburg and partake of the glorious delights of fruits made in the heavenly realms. Davao and The Great Bird of Asia –Soaring high in the new millennium No one in the early 80’s would have thought that Davao, like its symbol and icon- the Philippine eagle, would soar to new heights in the new millennium. No one in the early 80’s would have thought that Davao, like its symbol and icon- the Philippine eagle, would soar to new heights in the new millennium. No one ever thought too that the mighty Philippine Eagle (pithecophaga jefferyi) considered as the 2nd largest eagle in the world and threaten for extinction as early as the 70’s, would have survived the onslaught of denudation and other factors that continually threaten its natural habitat – the forest. Thanks mainly to joint efforts of concern government and non-government organizations, captive breeding of this great bird of Asia has resulted to the birth of more than a dozen eagles (hatched in captivity) and we have welcomed the new millennium with them still lording the skies over the forest and vegetation around Mt. Apo. The Philippine Eagle is a faithful mate. It has been observed that this bird usually prefers a monogamous lifestyle. It usually builds its nest on towering tropical trees about 80 feet above the ground (sufficient enough for it to have a good view over its territory). Philippine Eagles breed between August and January, does aerial courtship and mate in or near their nest. The female lays one egg every two years and both parents alternately incubate the egg for about 60 days until it hatches. The eaglet fledges within 150 days and becomes independent at 18 months at which time the parents drive it out of their 60 to 100 kilometer radius territories. With its habitat dwindling due to illegal logging, the Philippine Eagle Foundation, Inc. was organized in 1987 to implement programs such as captive breeding management, field research, community-based enterprise development, and conservation education. Convention Center of Mindanao Island With more convention and exhibition centers being established that have complemented other excellent tourism facilities, Davao City has steadily positioned itself as the Convention Center of Mindanao in the 21st century. Since 1990, it has steadily become the preferred destination for conventions and conferences. This could be attributed to the ever changing and ever improving economic and tourism landscape of the city, which attracted organizers to conduct major conventions here instead of proverbial settings like Manila or Cebu. Modern, sophisticated, and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for conventions and conferences are now readily available. This is equally complemented by the establishment of new first class hotels and mountain resorts bringing the number of hotel rooms from around 500 in 198 to over 2,500 in 1999. Yet, the demand for more hotel rooms is projected to increase now that the City has more tourism products, services, and facilities to offer. Gateway to the East ASEAN Davao City, the birthplace of the East ASEAN Growth Area (or EAGA), is also your gateway to this emerging polygon of power. The EAGA was formed mainly because the areas that comprised it (Mindanao and Palawan for the Philippines, Brunei, Manado and North Sulawesi of Indonesia, and Sabah for Malaysia) used to be a trading bloc during the 12th century up to the 15th century where people enjoyed borderless economies with barter trading as the most common economic practice. Centuries of colonialism, imperialism and the establishment of governments within the chain of islands halted the exchanges. In 1994, government representatives and businessmen from these areas have gathered together in Davao City for the biggest convention ever held in the region to formally signal the birth of the newest trading bloc in Asia, the BIMP-EAGA. In the heart of this formation is Davao City, which paved the way for the re-establishment of cooperation between the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia to advance the free movement of people, goods, services, and improve cultural and economic ties within the said sub-regional trade bloc. Through these developments, direct air and sea linkages to the islands have been established making Davao City your gateway to the East ASEAN growth area. Achievements and Recognition 1. Most Livable City in the Philippines, 1999 Based on annual surveys made by Asiaweek on the 40 Best Cities in Asia, Davao City has consistently made it to the Top 20 for four consecutive years (1996-1999). In the survey of livability, Davao City rated high in the following categories: 2nd in the least number of criminal cases per 10,000 at 0.8 5th in lesser vehicles per km of city road at 46 vehicles/km 6th in the ratio of house price to income at 6.18 14th in lesser volume of suspended particles in the air at 98 ?g/m³ 14th in value of state education spending per capita/$ at 410.80 In 1996, Cebu City was ranked 8th, Davao at 18th and Metro Manila at 22nd. In 1997, Cebu was ranked 13th, Davao at 15th , and Metro Manila at 18th. In 1998, five Asian Cities including Cebu and Manila were tied at no.14 with total scores of 56 points each. This brought Davao to 19th place with 55 points. In 1999, Davao garnered 56 points and ranked 18th. Cebu got 54 points and ranked19th while Manila was in a freefall with 49 points down at 25th. This statistics mean that Davao City has become the Most Livable City in the Philippines. If the survey, which is independently done by Asiaweek, becomes a basis, it could be said that Davao has maintained its quality of livability as a city and is in fact improving on it. 2. Destination of the Year, 1997 Kalakbay Awards 1997 was supposed to be the banner year of Davao City having earned a lot of distinctions in the national arena. Aside from being chosen as the Destination of the Year by the Kalakbay Awards, tourism facilities within the city were also recognized with the highest honors in their respective categories such as Hotel of the Year for Villa Margarita and Restaurant of the Year for Annies Restaurant. 3. Most Child-friendly City in the Philippines, 1999, 2000 In the first ever selection of the Most Child-Friendly City in the Philippines, Davao City came out the runaway choice for the top plum owing to its local government’s programs and initiatives directly benefiting its children. Davao City stood out because it is the first local government unit to have passed a Code specifically designed for the welfare of the children and their rights to services, Protection, and other privileges - this is the Davao City Children’s Welfare Code of 1994. Aside from the regular social welfare programs being implemented by the City Social Services and Development Office, the local government works closely with non-government agencies that implements programs for children. The Davao City Government also got high marks because of its implementation of the child welfare and protection programs under the Country Program for Children – UNICEF. 4. Most Outstanding Regional Peace and Order Council, 1999 The quest for peace has become very expensive and very elusive in some isolated parts of Mindanao. However, there is one region where peace has become a price possession that its leaders never want such ideal condition slip out from their hands – the Region XI Peace and Order Council was chosen as the Most Outstanding Regional Peace and Order Council for their unrelenting efforts in maintaining peace and order in Southern Mindanao or Region XI. 5. Most Peaceful City in East and Southeast Asia, 1998-2002 2nd Most Peaceful City in Asia, 1999-2002 One of the biggest come-ons of an area is an ideal peace and order condition. The dramatic decrease of crime rate in Davao City is big deal considering that it used to have a very unstable peace and order during the Marcos’ regime that ended in a bloodless revolution in February 1986. Since then, peace and order has never been more ideal. In fact, it improves year after year thanks to a people who will not let peace slip away like a prized possession. From a 3-digit crime rate per 10,000 people in 1985, Davao has reached an almost Utopian environment with 0.82 cases per 10,000 in 1999. Digging through the records, it would reveal that about 90% of these cases reported are petty crimes that do not in any way threaten the over-all peace and order condition of the city. 6. Best Police Office in the Country, 2002, 2001, 2000,1999 2nd Best Police Office in the Philippines, 1998 Best Police Office in the Philippines, 1997 Annually, the Philippine National Police conducts an evaluation of the Best Police Offices in the Country. They will be evaluated and ranked according to the ratio of policemen against the population of the area, implementation of programs for maintenance of peace and order, availability of sophisticated equipment and vehicles, the ratio of solved crimes against the total number of crimes reported and the overall safeguarding of the peace and order condition of the area. 2nd LGU Literacy Award in the Philippines, 1999 This award is given to local government units that seek to improve literacy within their area through programs that will ensure the establishment of learning institutions even in the most remote rural areas. Davao City ranked a close second in this competition having registered one of the highest literacy rates in the country and in Southeast Asia at 98.05%. 2nd Best City Health Office in the Philippines, 1999 Vaccines, medicines, and clinical and medical services may cost much nowadays. A local government unit should see to it that medical services are affordable if not given for free especially to rural folks and the urban poor. In this area of recognition, the local Government of Davao again ranked a close second in operating a City Health Office that delivers free and or very affordable services to its constituents aside from implementing health programs that focuses on prevention of sickness and illnesses. The Cleanest and Greenest City in the Philippines, 1999 (Highly urbanized category) For almost a decade, Davao City ranked Second Cleanest and Greenest City in the Philippines. Visitors cannot but help notice that the city’s roads are indeed clean day and night and the parks are eternally green with trees and ornamentals. But the top plum seems slippery because of an open dumpsite located along its diversion road. Now, the City is considered the Cleanest and Greenest in the Philippines (For the highly urbanized category) Most Outstanding Water Utility in Asia, 1996, 1997, 1998 (Awarded in Singapore to Davao City Water District) This recognition was given to four water utilities in Asia, and Davao City’s water district is one of them. The Davao City Water District has through the years supplied quality potable water to residents of the city. The need to deliver quality service is equally complemented by the natural abundance of fresh and potable water supply, which contributes to the quality of life in the City. Around 90% of the City’s water supply is taken from a more than 30 wells while the remaining 10% is treated surface water. The Davao City Water District (DCWD) has made piped water system available to about 70% of the population. This figure may be surprisingly low for people expecting a highly urbanized city. However, a visit to the City will show that hundreds of natural wells and other natural sources of spring water abound in the City, particularly in areas near the foot of the highest peak in the country, the Mt. Apo. tj_brewed February 16th, 2006, 12:35 AM Davao Snapshots http://www.imagebulk.com/images/tjbrewed/davao1.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/nytdvo1.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/dabaw17.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/dabaw23.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/dabaw21.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/dabaw2.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/dabaw14.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/dabaw24.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/dabaw4.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/dabaw3.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/wadab3.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/wadab1.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/wadab2.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/dabaw8.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/dabaw18.jpg tj_brewed February 16th, 2006, 12:45 AM Top 10 things to see and do in Davao 1. Looking for a place to stay in Davao is not a problem. There is a wide range of accommodation including five-star hotels, first-class beach resorts, affordable inns and even camping grounds for backpackers on a shoestring budget. 2 A visit to the museum is a must for lovers of art and history. The Davao Museum offers guests an opportunity to understand the Mindanao region’s distinct features including the rich heritage of its Maranao, Yakan, T’boli, Mandaya and Bagobo tribes. Meanwhile, the Japanese Museum in Mintal, Davao City, documents the history of the Japanese community residing in Davao before and during the Second World War. 3 Island hopping is a favourite among visitors to Davao. Bask under the sun on the beaches of the Island Garden City of Samal’s many resorts such as Chema’s, Costa Marina, and Paradise Island. Spend luxurious days relaxing at the Pearl Farm Beach Resort or own Buenavista Island for a day as your own exclusive and private getaway. The spectacular view of the Davao Gulf is a refreshing change from city sights. This vast expanse is home to a variety of marine life and offers ample opportunities for a variety of watersports, scuba diving, and underwater photography. 4 The best time to visit Davao is August when the province celebrates the Kadayawan sa Dabaw harvest festival. Floral parades, street dancing, tribal shows, horse fights and beauty contests highlight the grand occasion. Shopping and dining discounts also await tourists. 5 Christened the “Fruit Basket of the Philippines,” Davao boasts of an abundant supply of mangoes, durians, lanzones, bananas, pineapples, strawberries, pomelos, rambutans, marangs, mangosteens, which are available year-round. A stay in Davao is incomplete without sipping a cup or two of Larcepucchino Durian Coffee at Blu Gre at the Matina Town Square or shopping for pasalubong (gifts) at the Bankerohan Market, which offers some of the cheapest prices for fruits. 6 Looking for a bargain? The best place to go is the Aldevinco Shopping Centre in the heart of Davao City. It is a virtual shopper’s paradise, offering anything from native trinkets, souvenir shirts to batik clothes. Best buys include antiques and replicas, brassware, woodcrafts and native accessories. 7 Treat yourself to gastronomic delights at the Harana Pavilion, one of Davao’s best-known native restaurants. Feast on giant clams, juicy prawns, and all kind of fish imaginable, prepared fresh and just the way you like it by the restaurant’s chef. Another place to hang out is Jack’s Ridge at the Matina Heights. The restaurant’s view-deck affords customers a panoramic view of Davao’s skyline at night while its kitchen serves up a delectable seafood feast. 8 Speaking of nightlife, Davao offers plenty of exciting options. Matina Town Square (MTS) houses several fine dining, music and entertainment bars. Taboan at MTS, styled after a Singaporean hawker centre, is the best place to have a beer or two. Drop by on Tuesday and Thursday evenings to view Taboan’s cultural presentations. You can also hop over to The Venue, with its state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems, billiards bar and other recreational facilities. Have a good meal and enjoy live music at The Venue Compound, the attached strip of restaurants and bars. Another classy watering hole for the professional crowd is the Rizal Promenade, a pedestrianised alley of bars along Rizal Street. 9 The Malagos Garden Resort in Barangay Calinan is one of the best places to visit when wanting to enjoy the exotic flora and fauna of the region. It houses a variety of fruitbearing trees, butterflies of every size and colour, rare orchids, exotic birds and fish. Scattered around the place are sculptures of National Artist Napoleon Abueva that seem to grow among the flowers. Meanwhile, the Philippine Eagle Nature Centre in Malagos is home to the world’s first eagle hatched and bred in captivity – Pag-asa (Hope). Regarded as the national bird, the Philippine Eagle is the world’s tallest eagle specie with a wingspan of two-and-a-half metres. 10 Davao is also a sportsman’s paradise. There are a lot of places where the sports-minded can play a round of golf or tennis, go diving or fishing, or enjoy spelunking and mountain climbing. Mountaineering clubs organise Holy Week climbs called “Conquer Mt Apo” and semestral-break ascents in October. Spelunking in Samal Island and Tibangao Caves in Sanghay, Malita can be arranged with the Department of Tourism in Davao. For anglers, Cape San Agustin where marlin and tuna abound is the perfect place to try out game fishing skills. For golf enthusiasts, there is the Rancho Palos Verdes Golf & Country Club, which includes part of a tropical forest, a crocodile lagoon, an imposing view of Mt Talomo, and a wildlife sanctuary. Tee off too at the Apo Golf and Country Club. Askal82 February 16th, 2006, 12:45 AM Buti lang bumilis bilis na tong thread! A warm and friendly greeting derived from the Dabawenyo word "dayaw" that means good, valuable, superior or beautiful. But not for Juan M. He had just come home from a Friday night out with his buddies. They had they usual rounds of beer, after which they watched a couple of ‘bomba’ flicks (betamax and the subsequent developments weren’t in vogue yet). So Johnny was flushed with sexual urge and energy when he took his clothes off and naked and palpitating with desire, sidled up to Rosario, his wife, who was snoring away peacefully in her side of the bed. They were a young couple in their early twenties, married for three years with no children yet. Johnny was eager to prove his manhood and also show off to Rosario what he learned from the sexual acrobatics he saw in the bomba flicks a while ago. But Rosario had a bad day at work standing all day as a waitress and did not relish being disturbed from her sleep and confronted in the wee hours of the morning with a cocked and ready Johnny, oozing testosterone from every pore and smelling like a brewery to boot. Gawain mo na kung ano ang gusto mo sa lasing, ‘wag lang sa bagong gising! So she responded to his ardor with a round house kick that sent Johnny spinning out of bed and on to a painful one point landing on the hard floor. That broke his desire. It also broke his equipment. And that is how I met Johnny M. At two o’clock in the morning, he bowlegged his way into my emergency room with his hands on his crotch and a repentant and profusely apologizing Rosario a few steps behind him. My jaw dropped just as Johnny dropped his pants. His manhood was angled like a bayonet. It remained in its erect state and it was fast turning blue at the tip. Any young emergency room surgeon on duty will tell you that the strangest things always happen between twelve midnight and five in the morning. So I immediately covered the afflicted part with a surgical towel and raced upstairs to the surgical library to bone up on the subject held tightly in Johnny’s hands. Fracture of the penis. Many people contend that the penis cannot be fractured simply because there is obviously no bone to it. But the fact is that the penis in it most turgid state can be hard enough to fracture. This is because it contains sheaths or tubes of tough tissue called fascia that are filled with coiled blood vessels that uncoil when the blood rushes in as the male is sexually aroused, much like a little child’s toy whistle with a coiled paper tube that uncoils when air is blown into it. A penile fracture happens when a turgid penis is subjected to enough disruptive force that the fascial sheaths or tubes are torn and blood spurts into the surrounding area thereby blocking the exit of the blood from the rest of the organ so it remains erect. And painful. When I got back to the emergency room, Johnny, who appeared to be still under the influence of alcohol, had already attracted a lot of attention. He was bawling loudly like a little boy and declaring that if he was going to be crippled for life, there was no more point in living. He pointed to the contrite and red faced Rosario as the culprit responsible for taking the magic of his young life away. I assured Johnny that his condition was far from hopeless. He only needed to have a small operation by evacuating the collection of blood in the torn area and repairing the damaged sheaths in his penis. The Urology team soon came to collect him for the operation and the emergency room lapsed back into the graveyard silence of the early morning hours. But before they left, Rosario came up to me and asked anxiously if Johnny M. would still be a functioning husband after all of this. I assured her that after Johnny M. healed his physical and psychological wounds, he would probably be good as new. But he had to learn something about basic foreplay. And she definitely would have to do something about that round house kick. (MindaViews is the opinion section of MindaNews. Ting - Dr. Jose M. DOT regional director Sonia Garcia said during an interview last week that the proposed eco-tourism park will be located within the 10 to 20 hectares area with around eight or nine waterfalls. The eco-tourism park will be established "to look like a real forest with so much natural designs." DOT 11, together with some mountaineers, will do an ocular inspection in the area this week. Garcia said that every detail of the structures, which will be put up in the park will be studied carefully, the fact that a "no use of cement" policy has to be adopted. Other areas in the region where an eco-tourism park will also be set up soon are Pujada in Mati, Davao Oriental and Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos). It is one of the world’s largest cities, one of the most livable cities in Asia, and one of the cleanest and greenest cities in the Philippines. It even holds the claim to the second best potable water in the world! The superlatives extend as well to tourism. Davao City has the best access to the country’s highest peak, Mt Apo. It is home too to the second largest eagle in the world, the Philippine Eagle, and the most important Philippine orchid specie, the waling waling or vanda anderiana. And as its slogan ‘Island to Highland’ claims, Davao City easily covers the entire spectrum of holiday options. Its landscape is such that it can offer coral islands and white-sand beaches along with virgin forests, fruit plantations, and volcano-fed hills and valleys. The Davao Gulf is peppered with white-sand beaches and coral gardens. Beach resorts, each with their own personal charm, are aplenty in the Island Garden City of Samal. A vast expanse of fine white sand and glistening crystal blue waters awaits the most fervent beach lover at the sprawling Paradise Island Resort. The charming setups of Costa Marina Resort and Chema’s Beach Resort are sure to please sun-and-sand worshippers. Over at Isla Reta, a back-to-basics encounter beckons. For an exclusive and private getaway, tourists can own Buenavista Island for a day. Then, of course, there is the Pearl Farm Beach Resort, which has won raves the world over. The waters of the Davao Gulf make for excellent snorkeling and diving. The underwater vistas at Mushroom Rock, Ligid Island, Talicud Island are among the best the country has to offer. At higher altitudes lie fruit plantations, the majestic peaks of Mt Talomo and Mt Apo, and nature resorts. Nestled in cool climes, Eden Nature Park and Malagos Garden Resort come complete with resort accommodation, outdoor activities, flora and fauna sanctuaries, and organic farms, among others. Also in the highlands is the Philippine Eagle Nature Centre, which breeds and urtures the country’s national bird. It presently houses some 30 Philippine Eagles. In between the islands and the highlands rest many cultural, historical, nature and adventure attractions. The Dabaw Museum at the Insular Village in the north showcases Davao City’s colourful heritage. On display are various authentic costumes, accessories, and implements of the different tribes of Davao. The nearby T’boli Weaving Centre allows a closer look at the making of the tinalak fabric for which Davao is famous. The city’s oldest church, San Pedro Cathedral, was built in 1847. The original altar can still be found at the cathedral’s right wing. The Shrine of the Infant Jesus of Prague has replicas of its namesake and of Our Lady of Fatima. The open-air chapel offers spectacular views of fruit plantations. Over at J.P. Cabaguio Street is the Lon Wa Buddhist Temple, the biggest Buddhist temple in Mindanao. Since Davao City also has a thriving orchid and cut-flower industry, orchid farms and flower plantations abound. Floral havens such as the Malagos Garden Resort and the Puentespina Orchid Gardens are well worth a visit. And aside from the Philippine Eagle, Davao City’s list of famous wildlife residents also includes Pangil, the Philippines’ second largest crocodile at 18 feet. Pangil shares the Davao Crocodile Farm with pythons, rodents, exotic birds, and other locally bred crocodiles. The adventurous would delight in the Davao Wild Water Adventure, a 13-kilometre whitewater rafting passage on 25 rapids on the Davao River. dinabaw February 16th, 2006, 03:43 AM tj kana akong ginahulat Eco-tourism sa Baracatan ! pag guapo siguro ana kay paaduton jud nako nang mga bisita nako sa Manila sos madayon unta na! tj_brewed February 16th, 2006, 03:52 AM Asia's Best Marco Polo Hotel! http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/marco2.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/marco1.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/marco.jpg AsiaPulse (2006)- The Marco Polo, Davao has been voted as best among its chain of hotels in Asia based on a guest satisfaction survey. Hotel General manager Stanley Lao said they were rated from the start guests lodged inquiry, during their stay and up to the time that they check out "Our strength is the staff majority of them are from Davao," he said. He said most of those who rated them were international guests and the ratings were either excellent or very good. He said the survey done by an international group sends survey forms via electronic mails to their guests and the guests in turn send back the accomplished forms who rated them not only on reservations, check-in, accommodations, but also on the food and beverages and other related concerns. The survey results released by ehotelier.com naming the Philippines as No. 1 on customer satisfaction can be attributed to the people handling frontline services, the Department of Tourism (DOT) noted. DOT-XI regional director Sonia Garcia said the frontline service providers are crucial in the handling of guests in the respective tourism sites. She said it is only when the clients are satisfied that they can be expected to come back. "We need to complement their interests by continuing the training of our service providers in the tourism business," she said. The government, she added, has been putting the necessary infrastructures and the development of human resources leading to improving the growth of tourism in the country. The government aims to attract some five million tourists by 2010. tj_brewed February 16th, 2006, 03:56 AM Cool Pix junax! i miss Matina...I once lived near that place... ei dinabaw! yup..im way too excited din sa ecotourism park! PAL Mindanao vice president Atty. Dominador Duerme said this is on top of the recent increase in the frequency of the Manila-Davao flights to four times a day from Monday to Saturday and three times on Sundays. Duerme said PAL is currently experiencing a high average load factor of over 70 percent at the DIA. “If that will further improve, I am planning to upgrade the flight frequency at the DIA in the coming days,” he said. Duerme, however, said a number of PAL’s Boeing 737s are slated to expire this year. If the plan to increase flight frequency pushes through, PAL will upgrade these aircrafts and come up with additional Airbus 330 aircraft to add to the needed frequency. He said the recently concluded Asean Tourism Forum (ATF) and the price of fuel are major indicators of the rate of arrivals in the coming months. “If the number of visitor arrivals specifically as result of the ATF, and if fuel prices stabilize, maybe the airline industry will be better,” he said. PAL’s fuel surcharges that reflect in the plane’s fare continue to experience movements every time fuel price increases, Duerme said. PAL cannot do anything but increase the fuel surcharges to remedy the huge fuel cost, he added. PAL Interclub opens today in Davao City DAVAO CITY—This year’s PAL Interclub golf tournament, generally regarded as the country’s team championships, comes off the wraps today at two of the city’s three courses here. Kicking off the tournament is the 20th Senior Division competition starting today at the Apo Golf and Country Club and Lanang Golf and Country Club with an international cast competing for team and individual honors. Davao City Vice Mayor Luis Bongoyan headed the special guests who hit ceremonial drives yesterday at Apo in the 54-hole event launched in 1988 to provide golfing elders their own team championship. Guests Others who did the honors were Secretary Jesus Dureza, Philippine Sports Commission member Leon “Binggoy” Montemayor, PAL vice president for marketing support Felix Cruz and PAL senior assistant vice president for Mindanao Domingo Duerme Sr. Seventy-one teams from the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Saudi Arabia and the Philippines are seeing action in the seniors competition ending on Sunday. Leading the tournament confined to players who are 55 and older is Tarlac City’s Luisita Golf and Country Club, which is seeking its sixth consecutive championship. Action shifts to Apo and Rancho Palos Verdes Golf and Country Clubs starting Feb. 22, for the 59th men’s regular championship. Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte heads the list of special guests to hit ceremonial drives on Feb. 21. Teams Also invited to do the honors are Vice Mayor Bongoyan, North Cotabato Gov. Manny Piñol, Montemayor and Duerme, who is also the tournament’s organizing committee chairman. Seventy-three teams from the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, Saudi Arabia and the Philippines are vying for team and individual honors in the men’s regular event ending Feb. 25. PAL launched the men’s regular championship in 1948 to provide its nationwide clientele its own national team tournament. Action Asia, Airbus, Boeing, GE Aviation, GMA7, Honda Cars Davao, INQ7.net, Joey 92.3, Royal Caribbean International, Pagcor, People Asia, Premier Wine and Spirits, Rudy Project and UMBN are the major sponsors. ABS-CBN International, Fortune Tobacco and Radio Mindanao Network are the tournament’s corporate supporters while 96.3 Wrock, Asia Brewery, Century Park Hotel, Honda Megamotors, SMC City Davao and Tanduay Rhum are the other backers. KulasKusgan February 17th, 2006, 12:00 AM good morning sa tanan! Whatever happened to the city's traffic signal project? There is cause to rejoice on the rating by an Internet group of Davao City’s traffic management as the fifth best in the whole of Asia among big cities in the region. There really has been a signi-ficant improvement in the city’s traffic system since Celso “Popong” Gempe-saw took over the helm of the city government-run Traffic Management Center. The new TMC chief is no stranger to traffic management. In his younger days, Gempesaw was a member of the Davao City’s mounted traffic cops. Gempesaw’s dream, as he expressed it in an interview over GMA’s “Testigo” news program the other day, is for Davao City to be No. 1 in traffic management in Asia. I’m sure this is also the desire of the city’s No. 1 citizen (who else but Mayor Rody Duterte?) This dream of Durianburg becoming the best of the best in traffic management in the region is not unreachable. Al-though some of our streets in the downtown area are not wide enough, our thoroughfares are not yet as congested with motor vehicles as those in Metro Manila. Because of Metro Manila’s traffic monstro-sity, it is said that anyone who can drive in Metro Manila can drive any-where in the world. To repeat, the aspira-tion for Davao City to be Asia’s No. 1 in traffic management is achievable. However, as long as some kinks in our streets are not ironed out, this dream will remain a dream. Many, in fact all except a few, of the city’s traffic lights have long been out of commission. Several years ago, I pointed out a number of times in this corner that of the traffic signal lights in 14 or so intersection in Davao City’s downtown area, only those in three inter-sections were functioning. The rest have long gone kaput because either the system, due to old age, was no longer functioning or the bulbs were busted. I don’t know if the foreign delegates to the recently-concluded A-SEAN Tourism Forum had noticed this. If they had not, it was probably be-cause they were dazzled by the waling-waling-shaped lights that dot the traffic islands. The instal-lation of traffic lights in intersections, specially in busy areas, contributes in no small measure to efficient traffic manage-ment. It is bad enough that no effort has been made by the powers-that-be at City Hall to upgrade or replace with a new one the city’s traffic signal system which had seen better days. If memory serves me right, the city’s traffic lights, installed in a limited num-ber of intersections in the city’s poblacion, were put up in the early or mid-70s. It is far worse that no one among those in the corri-dors of power have thought of replacing the long-busted bulbs or fixing the broken-down traffic signal system. Some time last year (or was it the year before that?), the city government borrowed P900 million from a government lending institution for the imple-mentation of some pro-jects that had been put on hold for lack of funds. Of that amount, P340 million had been earmarked for the expansion of the traffic signal network in the downtown area and the replacement of those no longer serviceable in the city proper and, more significantly, the installation of traffic lights from Sasa in the north to Toril in the south, covering a distance of some 25 kilometers. The P900-loan had long been released by the bank but the traffic light project seems to have been forgotten. Somebody in the know told us that the traffic signal project has been scrapped and the money (P340 million) meant for that project was diverted to the drainage project. Okay, okay, but how in heaven’s name that many areas in the city proper continue to get submerged even during moderate rains? During heavy rains, that portion of Magsaysay Avenue (nostalgic city slickers insist on calling it by its old name which is Uyanguren Street) from Chavez Street to Magsay-say Park gets flooded to worrisome levels that oftentimes floodwaters reach as high as above the knee, The Internet group which rated the city’s traffic management as the fifth best in Asia may have overlooked the almost total absence of traffic lights in our streets. Before this discrepancy reaches the attention of the website group, will somebody at City Hall do something about the long-forgotten traffic light project? PAL vice president for Mindanao Atty. Domingo Duerme said the coming of thousands of foreign and local visitors is expected to boost the city’s economy anew after the recently concluded Asean Tourism Forum (ATF) which was attended by about 3,000 foreign and local delegates last month. “The coming in of the golfers will certainly shore up the city’s economy for they will stay and spend in the city for a couple of days,” Duerme said. He said an estimated 2,000 local and foreign visitors will arrive for the event, believed to be the biggest golf tournament to happen in Davao. About 1,400 will play in the two categories, namely senior’s division and men’s division. 23 foreign players will join the senior’s division, while 23 foreign players will join the men’s division. The rest of the visitors are companions of the players. The senior’s division will run on February 17 to 19 while the men’s division will be on February 21 and 22 at the Lanang Golf and Country Club, Rancho Palos Verdes, and Apo Golf and Country Club. dinabaw February 17th, 2006, 08:09 AM Saturday, 20 August 2005 ALL ABOUT HAMIGUITAN... Mood: cool Topic: d truth behind hamiguitan Feeling 'Gulliver' on Mt. Hamiguitan By Leonard Paul Palo Inquirer News Service SAN ISIDRO, Davao Oriental--Friedrich Nietzsche once said, "Whenever I climb, I am followed by a dog called Ego." This could be every mountaineer's motivational credo as every summit or peak that he or she tries to conquer presents a unique and fairly different challenge. In the town of San Isidro in Davao Oriental province, also known as the Sunrise Capital of the Philippines, lies the 5,000-foot Mt. Hamiguitan -- an enchanting crest lined with thick vegetation and some rocky terrain, which is home to the famous pygmy or bonsai forest and the 250-foot twin falls. On June 14-17, in celebration of San Isidro's 38th founding anniversary and its yearly "Bauldayawan Festival," the local tourism office, in cooperation with the Department of Tourism regional office, the Mountaineering Federation of Southern Mindanao (MFSM) and the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines Inc. (MFPI), organized the "Katkat ta sa Hamiguitan," or the journey to Hamiguitan. The event was participated in by 84 mountaineers. Seeing it as another breathtaking opportunity to explore something new and exciting, I and a few adventurous members of the MFSM, the MFPI and the Edge Outdoor Shop in Davao, embarked on the mind-blowing trip. Getting there Our crew and the rest of the participants coming from Davao City reached barangay Manikling in San Isidro in a dump truck. An air-conditioned bus normally plies the Davao-Mati route to the village, charging 164 pesos per passenger. From there, a 5-minute ride on a habal-habal (improvised motorcycle) or a jeepney takes one to the poblacion (town proper), which is also referred to by the locals as "Bato-Bato." A Mitsubishi L-300 van plying the Davao-Sigaboy route brings one directly to the poblacion. The land trip takes as long as four hours, depending on the speed of the vehicle. Before our ascent, the municipal government headed by Mayor Apolinar Ruelo Sr., and administrative officer Lanie Casta¿ares welcomed the mountaineers at the San Isidro Training and Convention Center. A choir serenaded the participants, and the officials briefed the participants on what to expect during the climb. From Sitio Tumaliti, our crew, which volunteered to be the lead pack, began our trek to the first campsite at 6 a.m. the following day, crossing rivers and following forest trails. We took a slight detour after being told of a recent landslide along the way. Before reaching Camp 1, we stopped at a place called "Lantawan" or view deck, a rocky section of the mountain that is rich in copper and silver deposits. The rocks glittered like gold when the rays of the sun struck them. Pitcher plants grew along the trail. Wrong turn When we reached the first checkpoint, called "Pulang Lupa" because of its clayish soil, we logged in with the volunteers manning the post and were told to list the names of climbers who had already passed through. Little did we know that two trails actually lay ahead of us, and we had taken a wrong turn that cost us a lot of time and energy. The trail that we took, which was not properly blocked by the technical team who earlier assessed the area, would have taken us to the neighboring town of Governor Generoso, which was way too far from our destination. When we realized that we were lost, we decided to retrace our steps back to the checkpoint. We reached the camp at noon and after a few minutes rest, we continued our trek to Camp 4, where we were supposed to stay for the night. After nearly two hours of hiking, we arrived at the camp, but then the whole horde of mountaineers decided to proceed to Camp 3 to see the Pygmy Forest. Again, we prodded on. With wet clothes and muddied boots, we took an even muddier uphill trail. We passed through an area that some mountaineers christened the "Super Ferry" because one would have to hold on to some railings made out of tree branches and roots, just like one sees in an ocean liner. After almost 10 hours of walking and dodging wayward branches and thorny bushes, we finally reached Camp 3. It was foggy and we soothed our aching and cramped muscles before calling it a night. Like giants The next morning, the camp was still shrouded by fog and chill. The famed 600-hectare Pygmy Forest was just a stone's throw away, so Inquirer photographer Ryan Lim and I decided to set off early. We staked it out so that we could take better pictures when the thick mist would finally dissipate. The air finally cleared and we saw ourselves trekking through pint-sized trees, some of which were only a foot high but with well developed trunks and branches. The mini-forest was believed to be centuries-old and, from a distance, one could be looking at regular trees. We felt like giants walking through the area which had versions of the "Almaciga," "Fire Tree" and many other species, including rare orchids. Just 30 minutes of hiking from the camp lay the 250-foot twin falls. Unfortunately, the cascading waters during our visit were not really that powerful, but it was still a sight to behold. Apart from the Pygmy Forest and the Twin Falls, Mt. Hamiguitan is the site of the "Tinagong Dagat," (hidden sea), which is a saltwater lake in the middle of the mountains. What's so surprising about this body of water is that it is the habitat of a number of fish species. How the fish got there, nobody knows, since the lake is surrounded by tall mountains. Many believe that the species were simply a product of evolution. The thought of seeing the undersized trees really stuck to my head. I felt like Gulliver walking in Lilliput. Literally speaking, Davao City is an enchanted and beautiful place in its own right, filled with lively people who had persevered in maintaining the natural beauty that the land of their lives had been endowed with. The over-all topography in Davao, in fact, is more than enough to simulate the mind, the soul and the eyes. For instance, the country's highest mountain -- the ever-majestic Mt. Apo -- is comfortably set within Davao's mellowed hinterlands. On yet another kind of surface -- the sea -- Coral islands are sights to behold suround by the blue, scenic waters. And more important, rich fruit plantations such as of the famed durian give Davao the distinction as a food basket in our small, thriving country. Davao is so rich not only in natural resources, but also in people. For the past decade, this city has been known as one of the most peaceful places in the country today, thanks to a brilliant government and a cooperative, willing community. Thus, combining the resources and people together, what you get is a happy, livable community to dwell in. All these things give every prospective tourist a reason to come and visit this place. Whether they love to see nature at its loveliest or just enjoy the perks of a modern city, this is the place to go for all of them. For Davao is not only earmarked for modernization; it also has a good grasp of present technology such as the establishment of malls, internet cafes, plush hotels and so on. It's definitely a wholesome place to be in. Davao is also the preffered dwelling place of the endangered Philippine Eagle. In fact, many tourists admit to the the fact that besides Davao's vast natural resources, what really attracted them most to visit the Phillipines is the chance to see the Philippine Eagle -- which has been considered as the "air's noblest flier". Here and now, tourists galore in this rich, peaceful and happy city. And this serves only as a further testament of how exactly wonderful a city Davao truly is. A lot of developments as well. And Cebu now is back on its Ceboom status! Anyway, Davao City should strive more so the city can prove that its worthy of such award! It harks back to the past and brings to mind tribal wars, drum beats and ritual fires along the river banks which, according to some sources gave origin to the word "Davao" from daba-daba", meaning fire. The early inhabitants occupying the eastern shores of Davao were the Manobos, Tagcaolos, Guianggas, Bilaans and Aetas. On the western portion were the Mandayas and Bagobos. The Samals occupied the Samal and the Talicud Islands. Later, the Maguindanaos from Cotabato, Zamboanga and Jolo migrated to Davao and Succeded in driving the natives inhabitants to the mountains. In 1528, Davao was visited by Albaro de Saavedra; in 1543, Baganga, Manay and the island of Sarangani were explored by Villalobos. In 1844, Governor Figueroa and Agustin Bocallan, a brigadier-general in the Spanish army, obtained from the Sultan of Mindanao the cession of the region in favor of the Spanish government. In 1847, armed with an authority from Gov. Claveria, Don Uyanguren, a political refuges and a soldier of fortune set sail for Davao, landing at the mouth of the Davao river on July 20, the Spaniards were met by the Muslims led by Datu Bago. In the ensuing battle, Datu Bago was slain and his followers retreated to the hinterlands. search sarangani + villalobos in google, you'll find out how historic the sarangani island is. @ junax: wow you exerted so much effort in there. thanks for that informative map. re: nccc pics. last time i attempted to take pics there, a security guard approached me and told me in a polite way that its prohibited. @ dextertexter: welcome to the forums! good day to all! bustero February 18th, 2006, 03:19 AM That Sarangani island is so remote! There has been much optimism in the trade and tourism industry given the continuous influx of new businesses and tourism projects. The Philippines Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 11 reported that the region generated over P7.5 billion worth of investments as of September 2005, an 83 per cent increase the same period last 2004. Thirteen major conventions successfully concluded here, which gathered at least 20,000 delegates from all over the country and abroad. These include among others, the National Educators Congress, Philippine Convention of Medical Practitioners, Philippine Nurses Association Congress and 13th Mindanao Business Conference, which gathered foreign diplomats and trade representatives from Australia, Canada, China and the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines-East Asian Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). One of the biggest investors this year was the Japanese-owned Sumitomo Fruits Corporation (SUMIFRU), which poured in an additional P1.5 billion investments for its banana expansion program in Mindanao. SUMIFRU is now developing about 4,000 hectares of banana plantations in Davao region's agricultural districts of Calinan and Toril. Davao region's trade and tourism sectors were also boosted by BIMP countries establishing a US$5-million worth BIMP Multinational Corp. to corner the Middle East market for Halal chickens, which is estimated to be worth US$150 million a year. The year 2005 was also a good year for the economy of Davao Region as the Philippine government and Saudi Arabia inked an agreement for stronger economic and security cooperation. Some 27 Arabian officials and trade leaders visited Davao in May for a venture with the local furniture and fruit industries, particularly mango and banana. At present, trade officials are working on P700 million investment pledges from various foreign and local capitalists, with the agriculture and aquamarine industries as the major beneficiaries. Potential investments to enter Davao region this 2006 include a P300 million oil filter plant project; P150 million marine processing plants; P100 million Vapor Hot Treatment (VHT) plant; P100 million seaweeds expansion project, P30 million castor oil plantation development and P20-million banana chips processing plant. Three large-scale mineral resources development projects in the region are now in the pipeline, according to the Minerals and Geosciences Bureau. The projects are Diwalwal Direct State Utilization in Compostela Valley for gold and silver, Pujada Nickel project in Davao Oriental and Amacan Copper project in Compostela Valley. The projects are expected to generate over US$400-million revenues yearly and at least 10,000 jobs once in place. The investments and trade pledges came in as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) implemented over P7 billion worth of infrastructure development projects in Davao Based on DPWH-11 records, 435 road and bridges were already completed in 2005 while some 240-infrastructure projects are up for completion. Amid all the development, employment, exports earnings and tax collection Davao region also grew, indicating an overall positive economic performance during the year of 2005. tj_brewed February 20th, 2006, 07:40 PM hi dexter texter! musta! yup..how i wish we have those kind of projects as well! are u currently in Davao now? ei maybe u can post some updates about Davao too.....tc! simply_me February 21st, 2006, 12:27 AM hey!...madayaw dabaw! nice to see lots of enthusiastic davaoeños here.. thanks sleepydave, tj, don dinabaw, junex and junax for contributing great captures of our city... mhe-ann February 21st, 2006, 01:10 AM hi ate gina! great pics! :applause: btw, I watched the movie 'Close To You'...some scenes were shot in Davao. the person seating beside me said, 'wow! ganyan pala kaganda ang Davao'. :) dinabaw February 21st, 2006, 02:09 AM maayong buntag Dave ,dugay naman nang Chemas tapad na sa Paradise Island pero wala ko kabalo asa sakay,tag-iya ana Mga Vicente daw! dinabaw February 21st, 2006, 02:38 AM Dave, naay article dri sa Sports Unlimited about Chemas Sports Unlimited" directs its attention to Davao. We rappel 300 feet down then dare to enter the dungeon-like, bat infested, cave. And there’s more! What’s this? Help, Marc gets mauled by a big dog! And for the first time ever, Marc and I compete in a drag race duel. So ring the bell. Fun is served. One of the nicest discoveries we made on Samal Island is this heavenly tropical resort: Chemas. How come we have never been to this absolutely beautiful place before. Well, doesn’t matter. We are here now. Sonny brought us to Chemas for lunch and also for us to meet the honorable mayor of the Island Garden City of Samal, Mayor Roger Antalan. Over a sumptuous signature Davaoeéo lunch, the mayor told us about his ambitious and great plans for the island of Samal and he also amused us with his trivial stories about his background before becoming the mayor. The infinity pool here at Chemas is built above sea water so you can get a terrific overlooking ocean view. Chemas is perfectly immaculate place to spend a totally relaxing, private and luxurious tropical island vacation. We highly recommend you visit. Next time you’re in Davao, head to Samal Island and check out Chemas. Tell them Sports Unlimited sent you. You’ll fall in love with the place. According to Mr. Bobby Teo Chief of the Davao City Investment and Promotions Center during the weekly Kapihan sa PIA, the City has only the Cyber City as the lone Call center facility in the City (as of January 2006), although many of these call center firms have been inquiring on the possibility of locating in the City. According to Mr. Teo the DCIPC has met with the members of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry to discuss the efforts to sell the City as an ICT haven. Mr. Teo said that the IT promotion efforts would be jointly push together with the private, academe and public sectors working together to sell Davao as an ideal IT investment hub. For the part of Local Government, they had contracted accounting firm SGV to review the present Davao City Incentive Code and present their proposed amendments to the City Council. Mr. Teo said that one of the SGV's recommendations is to apply the current incentive to IT investments unlike the past Code where incentives are only applied on investments in telecommunications. In the proposed amendment, incentives that includes 3-years exemption from Mayor's permit and 2-year exemption from paying Real Estate Taxes would be given to investments falling under the ICT sector like call centers, medical transcriptions and IT parks. SGV has already submitted to the City Council their recommendations on the proposed amendments for the Incentive Code. Mr. Teo said that Davao is a perfect area for IT investments as they have the sufficient telecommunications infrastructure and the technical manpower suited for IT investments. "We have all the facilities here in Davao City and most of the Davaoeños in the IT sector are exported to Cebu and Manila." Said Teo. Mr. Gil Dureza head of the Bureau of Investments that covers the Davao region said that it would be an exciting year for IT investments as Smart and Globe have just been given license to operate 3G. "Investments in wireless fidelity technology are expected" Dureza said. Dureza noted exciting IT investments in the City for 2006 citing the warm-up operations and subsequent expansion of an outsourcing firm located in the City outskirts of Ulas that deals with designing engineering infrastructures. Among its noted works was the design of oil wells located in the Middle East. tj_brewed February 21st, 2006, 05:21 PM Davao ICT firms target Japanese market Issue Date: February 21, 2006 http://www.itnetcentral.com WHILE the rest of the industry is still largely looking at the US market, information and communication technology firms in Davao are eyeing a lucrative niche in providing outsourced services to Japan. Oliver Robillo, executive director of the Association of Solution Integrators in Davao (ASID), said their organization is making a big push to penetrate the Japanese market. ASID is composed of some 15 Davao-based solution firms that, at present, provide services directly to clients located in the US or do subcontract work for companies in Metro Manila. Members of this group are roughly classified according to the service their offer which includes animation/graphics design, software development (including custom applications design), medical transcription, and wireless applications development. "We don't have definite prospects yet, but right now I can say we are competent enough to provide services (to Japanese clients), particularly in the area of content development that would involve translating, for example, software applications to Japanese," Robillio said during a brief forum held at the Board of Investments (BOI) offices. JAPANESE FOCUS Robillo noted that most of the major universities and colleges in Davao are currently offering language courses in Japanese. "This may be partly attributed to the Japanese embassy's announcement that Japan will start hiring Filipino nurses as well," he added. Prior to this, Robillion said there were already a considerable number of people in Davao fluent in Japanese. They are among the 12,000 college graduates the city produces every year, he noted. ASID wants to work with the government further and strengthen networking ties with industry players based in Metro Manila. The group also wants to expand its reach to include ICT solutions firms from other cities in the region like Cagayan De Oro, General Santos and Zamboanga. "One of our initial goals is to formalize our sector and have our group recognized as representing the industry in the region," Robillo pointed out. "What we want to happen is for investors to recognize us so that ASID may be the one farming out projects to its members." tj_brewed February 21st, 2006, 09:36 PM ICT industry growing steadily in Davao INQ7.net James Tan, president of the Association of Computer Business in Mindanao (ACBM), said Davao’s communications sector has been among the fastest-growing sectors in the local ICT industry. Along with other computer hardware, he said that wireless communications equipment, in particular, was selling very well. “The growth in IP telephony has resulted in increased demand for computer notebooks, cellular phones, and personal computers with Wifi [wireless fidelity] capabilities,” Tan said. He added that part of Davao ICT businessmen’s strategy is to match equipment prices with those of their Manila-based counterparts. Davao's local government will also speed up the processing of applications for investors and other businessmen planning to put up their offices in Davao, Tan said. ACBM was among the supporters of COMDDAP Davao 2005 that drew more than 8,000 visitors, half of them businessmen and professionals from the city and nearby provinces in Mindanao. tj_brewed February 21st, 2006, 09:50 PM http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/davaogulf.jpg DAVAO CITY aka SILICON GULF Silicon Gulf is a framework for developing a local innovation system in developing countries with a sufficient level of IT education. It encompasses programs and activities targetted at government, academe and the private sector. Silicon Gulf is also a nickname for Southern Mindanao, Philippines, referring to the growing number of software companies sprouting in the area. The term was derived from the term Silicon Valley, referring to the high tech cluster located in the San Francisco Bay Area in northern California. Davao Region is one of the regions of the Philippines, located on the southeastern portion of Mindanao. Clarence Lagera, assistant vice president of PHILCOM telecommunication services, said that Davao City has the human resource advantage over other places in the country where call centers are mushrooming. “I’m very sure that if we start opening call centers in Davao City, we can get as many agents as we can,” he said. He said that a good number in Davao City are proficient in English and have a good work ethic. This is proved by the increasing interest of call center firms to recruit here. At present, G-Com, a call center run by the Cyber City Teleservices Ltd. is operating in the city. The local government with the business sector, however, committed to lure more ICT investors in the coming year. Councilor Peter Laviña, chair of the committee on commerce, trade and industry, said they will include ICT as the newest preferred area of investment in the Davao City Investment and Promotion Code along with the alternative energy industry. “The ICT that Davao City should attract should not be limited to call centers. We should also explore the possibility of attracting companies which are into computer graphics and animation, systems development and even manufacturing of computer parts and accessories,” he said. tj_brewed February 21st, 2006, 10:12 PM Davao Updates 2006: Recent and Upcoming Developments From January 2006 to present - A local callcenter owned by one of Davao's business leaders Joji Ilagan Bian will be opened by April 2006. - Two major call centers from Manila will be relocationg within the year.\ - Saint Albans College of Technology (a medical transcription school) to be put up by March 2006. - Swiss businessmen show interests on agritourism. - Thai businessmen plan to put up a hotel in the region. - Davao City launched RP’s first barangay business chamber. - More Davao City hotels providing wi-fi hotspots--Globequest - Davao SMEs to develop software for computerization program . - Davao hospital to pursue expansion (12 storeys medical center) PLUS - P300 million oil filter plant project - P150 million marine processing plants - P100 million Vapor Hot Treatment (VHT) plant - P100 million seaweeds expansion project - P30 million castor oil plantation development - P20-million banana chips processing plant - 240-infrastructure projects are up for completion for more info pls refer to PAGE 5 of this thread Note: These are investments for this quarter of 2006 alone.
