^^Yeah, iT does look like an ark. It's a good landmark for Davao city. I hope it would be restored para mas malinis tingnan... pansin ko kasi mejo antiquated na ung grounds and even the finishes on the structure.

In addition, hugaw kaayo tan-awon ang mga poste ug cables.

why can't davao light and pldt bury these cables block by block? is it not possible? i mean if it takes millions to bury the whole thing, then why not do it piece by piece when the budget allows?

DexterTexter

^^ bitaw paul... burying these cables undergound will do a lot in improving the look and views of our city. Eyesores jud tanawun. I live in this subdivision sa manda, naka-bury ang phone ug electric cables... hapsay kaayo tan-awon ang paligid. Unta ing-ana pud sa davao, maski hinay-hinayan gud nila. (did i just side with the cons sa great davao expressway debate? L:lol: L)

@Davaoeagle ...salamat po. Kanang windows sa San Pedro Cathedral... favorite jud nako na tan-awon maski 'tong bata pa ko. Ganahan pud ko sa "pandong-pandong" sa mga windows.

An engineer friend who used to work for PLDT said there was a plan to do that but the company shelved the plan because of the exorbitant cost. With the billions of pesos they have sucked in from the region, I think cost of this project is just drops in the bucket. It's more of "political will" that is nowhere tro be found in the picture as far as this plan is concerned.

i wouldn't want to be sucked in by that exhorbitant cost argument. how many times did they dig and redig just to lay down pipes and anything? if they really want it, they could have done it a long time ago. plus the city has to do it's share. first create an "digging and pipelaying framework and masterplan". otherwise, this argument will just go on and on. hrmp.

My guess is because DLPC has been partners with Davao City in a lot of city projects e.g. school buildings, 911 Emergency Response and so on, the mayor is soft with them in this regard. With security as his focus I think the no-nonsense mayor of Davao made that his priority conduit project with the Aboitizes. I hope and I'm keeping my fingers crossed, the mayor would make this project a big part of the equation in his next term and put more pressure on DLPC.

hala! na inis na si Sir Paul. :) Mao man jud na kasagaran palusot... the cost. Pero kung city-wide (or poblacion-wide man lang galing) ang burying project... mejo mu-entail jud cya ug dako-dako nga kantidad.

I think it would be better if they just placed a "burying spot" at every corner or intersection... para kung dunay future project nga kailangan mag dukdok sa atong mga dalan, did2 nalang nila ilubong sa burying spot, kauban sa mga electric cables, phone lines, etc. Para mas hapsay, ug mas organized. Dili pud magkonsumisyon ang mga katawhan sa pirming pag-bakbak sa karsada nga maka cause ug trapik. hastang gamaya baya sa mga karsada sa poblacion area.

Fiber agency sees progressive year for abaca in '07
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE Fiber Industry Development Authority (Fida) in Southern Mindanao sees a progressive abaca industry this year.

Fida assistant regional director Antonio Doong said the positive outlook for the industry this year can be attributed to the increasing buying price of abaca fibers.

"For the last five years, the buying price of abaca per kilogram is only below P30, but now it has increased because there is growing demand for abaca," Doong said.

The buying price of abaca fiber per kilogram at present is pegged at P45.50, the highest, so far.

Doong also encourages farmers to plant more abaca because of its promising profit.

"We are encouraging farmers especially the indigenous people (IP) to plant abaca because abaca will not grow in an open area, it usually grows at the foot of the mountains where there is a cool atmosphere," Doong explained.

Doong added that Fida has been conducting information drive among IPs for several years now.

"We inform them about the market potential of abaca and its uses, we also give technical training where they could get exact information on how to plant abaca," Doong added.

Meanwhile, Doong said that Fida is continuously implementing its Oplan Sagip Abaca Program, a program that started nationwide for several years now.

"In this program, we have measures on how to treat and eradicate diseases in abaca plants and measures on how to prevent the disease," he said.

Doong claimed that abaca diseases can be acquired from abandoned plantations.

"If the diseases that came from the abandoned plantations are not controlled, it will spread on the new plants," he said.

By Jun Ledesma
Sunbursts

DAVAO businessmen obviously are in no mood to join the political opposition doomsday scenario for 2007. In fact the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry are upbeat 2007 will be one of the best years for decades.

Chamber President Doming Duerme cites some bases why. He said that there will be increased government spending this year. He anchored his prognosis on the creation of the Mindanao Super Region.

While he did not go into details, I think Doming referred to the unprecedented revenue generated by the National Government last year following the implementation of the expanded VAT and the new discipline imposed on tax collecting agencies.

Following the rosy financial position of the government finance President Arroyo announced the creation of the super regions. Mindanao, if we were to believe Secretary Jesus Dureza, will have P10-billion more to spend than the usual allocation.

Depending on how soon and how fast can this government implement the various projects that had been on the pipeline, there will indeed be a lot of money circulating in Mindanao. I just hope that the national government will stop the anomalous policy of awarding contracts to firms based in Manila just because they have the so-called experience in undertaking multi-million-peso projects.

The bare fact is that all of the projects awarded by DPWH to Manila contractors are actually subcontracted to the locals. Implementation of various road projects like the Davao-General Santos road, Davao-Valencia highway, and Davao-Butuan Philippine-Japan span were all awarded to Manila-based construction companies.

All of these projects were delayed and all were subjected to new bidding after years of unconscionable delays when the winners did not perform. I know that all of them got some advances.

Despite their inability to perform, they still continue to be entertained by DPWH and worse, nobody went to jail despite the millions of pesos lost in this scam.

President Doming on the other hand specifically mentioned the various infrastructure projects that Davao City is presently undertaking. The City government under the leadership of Mayor Rody Duterte had started off with the synchronized traffic signaling system and soon after that and will commence with another gargantuan drainage project. This year too will see the massive construction of barangay roads and bridges in the city. All told, by quick estimates, we are talking here of about P1-billion circulating in Davao City.

Davao Region will see some dramatic entry of foreign and domestic capitals in the local mining industry. This will truly perk up the economy of the region starting this year.

The agriculture export industry will continue to flourish led by the robust productivity of the banana export sector. Fresh cavendish bananas will grow tremendously this year with newly opened areas starting to reach maximum productivity. In tandem, banana chips from the endemic cardava variety, have shown acceptability in the export market with improve processing quality and packaging. Vegetable growers and fruit producers will continue to cash-in with the cost reduction of freight by about 30 percent owing to the opening of the new nautical highway, which cut travel time from Mindanao to Luzon by over 10 hours.

Business process outsourcing will be a new niche for Davao business. I agree with the Chamber report that a large number of our graduates had been recruited by IT operators in Visayas and Luzon because they find our human resources more trainable and efficient.

This year will see about five big IT centers in Davao City, which will cater to medical transcription and call center services to various establishments overseas. The information highway they got in Manila and Cebu are available here. Problem was, our local capitalist had been timid in putting their eggs on this venture to the point that we had been overtaken by the more aggressive entrepreneurs in those parts. No worry, some of our businessmen have awakened from their lethargy we are seeing a perceptible placements of investments in these ventures. Hopefully we will be able to recall our boys and girls from Cebu and Manila.

We have our own share of OFWs who are investing their hard-earned money on local real estate, which is experiencing a real boom here according to President Duerme. Which reminds me. If the DDS operatives are still around, why don't they hunt those shady operators who sold non-existent lots somewhere in Matina to a number of trusting OFWs? My gush, those glib tongue salesmen can sell even Davao Gulf and Bankerohan bridge! For one reason or another there are naïve and gullible buyers who fork out blood money to buy those invisible real estates!

Davao Chamber President Doming Duerme sees more tourist arrivals in Davao in 2007. He knows this prospect from where he sits as Vice President of Philippine Airlines in Mindanao. He tells us that there will be a new route to be opened early this year. He is referring to Davao-Macau-Seoul (Korea) route and hopefully the opening of a direct link between Nagoya and Davao also this year. He also mentioned a new term: "medical tourism." This one is good for local hospitals and the foreign airline industry for they will be flying in patients from Palau and nearby countries for treatment here. But yes, I agree that there will be more Koreans who will be escaping not only the harsh winter in their land but also to play golf and gulp and, if my guess is right, to try their luck in casinos and savor the variety of exquisite food that await them here. Soon we will be saying more "anyong hasimnida" (it's a Korean greeting that sounds the way I spelled it) than "good morning."

SM City welcomes '07 with new stores

SM City Davao's Symphony of Lights was indeed a blast. Kids were shrieking, if not wide-eyed and silent, as SM City's 3D laser lights show put together an early welcome to 2007 on December 30.

An early welcome was definitely suited for another exciting year for shopping and malling with the whole family. This year, expect more variety to Davao's malling lifestyle with a new line-up of shops and restaurants.

For Me and the new "Surplus Shop" are great additions to SM City's apparel shops. Both are at the 2nd floor, joining other fashion brands that are featured only in SM.

Casual dining has become more fab too with Cheesecake etc. at the 2nd floor near SM Foodcourt, BluGre Coffee at the ground floor near BPI Express, and Red Ribbon's new dining area at the ground floor beside McDonalds.

Coffee Dream will soon open a new dining area too at the ground floor fronting National Bookstore. Beside it would be Roadhouse Cafe, another restaurant to bring marvelous wonders to your food cravings this New Year.

While for your new year's wellness resolutions, MediSpa Skin Specialist in now on its 3rd month at the 2nd floor Level 2 area.

SM Department Store in the meantime has set the mood for another superb year with a Kick Off Sale from January 10 to 14. Over and above the discounts, a total of over P1M worth of giftcards will be given away to daily raffle winners nationwide.

With that, SM City had extended its New Year welcome party with a Pooh Bear Party for the kids last January 6. The free showcase was also in celebration of Pooh's 80 years and was indeed another New Year blast for SM patrons.

All sold out for Souled Out
By Ana Felicia Dulay

SOULED Out is a local band that heats up the entertainment scene in Davao City, playing music from the 70's to contemporary jazz and alternative.

Composed of Charwin Acebuche (guitars, vocals), Jose Acebuche (bass guitar), Jeri Diao (male vocals) and Chelo Gonzaga (female vocals), you can catch the group at The Venue on Fridays, Blue Room at The Apo View Hotel on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and every other Saturday at the MTS Taboan.

We were lucky to catch them at the Kanto Bar recently, where they also perform. Charwin or Tots says the group has been together for the past eight years.

"Luckily, pare-pareho kami ng taste sa music. Yung ibang bands kasi, iba ang taste ng drummer, ng vocals, etc.," he says.

Tots says the music scene in Davao City is not that daring. "Mahirap mo kunin ang "trip" ng Dabawenyos, pero once makuha mo, okey ka na," he says.

He also admits that Dabawenyos are hard to please. "Picky karamihan," he says.

Tots revealed that some of the original members have traveled abroad like Bahrain, Seoul and South Korea. But when they returned home, they still played as a group. He revealed that they have an original composition, but it is as yet unfinished.

Bands have their own ups and downs. "But we stayed together, yung ibang bands, nagkawatak-watak na, but we are still together. Tots says their chemistry has kept them glued all these years and for the years to come. Kudos to that!

I guess the current DIA location is still usable up to 10 years or so. If number of passengers balloons astronomically then I guess the city governement should move it to the identified airstrip in Callawa.

GMA transfers DAR, DA, DOTC head offices to provinces

The Philippine Star 01/11/2007

President Arroyo has ordered the transfer of the central offices of the departments of agrarian reform, agriculture and transportation and communications from Metro Manila to the provinces to expedite regional development.

The President tasked Presidential Adviser for New Government Centers Rodolfo del Rosario to focus on the moving out of the three agencies from Metro Manila, and manage the social preparation of the respective agencies’ staff.

The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) will be transferred to Davao while the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and the Department of Agriculture (DA) will be moved to Clark, Pampanga and Baguio, respectively.

"The decentralization of government departments to regions where they are needed most is envisioned to promote regional development," Cabinet Secretary Ricardo Saludo said.

Mrs. Arroyo said the introduction of the super regions has made it more appropriate to move the agricultural agencies, DA and DAR to North Luzon and Mindanao, respectively, while maintaining the plan to transfer the DOTC to Clark since ports were the priority in the Luzon Urban Beltway.

The President established the super regions to develop the provinces and generate jobs for the people in the countryside.

At the same time, Mrs. Arroyo designated Presidential Management Staff chief Cerge Remonde as oversight official for micro-small and medium enterprise programs of the country, one of the priority projects of the administration to generate jobs as well and speed up economic development.

The government committed to support three million entrepreneurs by providing them with credit to contribute to the generation of six to 10 million jobs until 2010. — Aurea Calica

Traffic lights have 50 years life span
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE chief of the Traffic Management Center (TMC) claimed the traffic lights project of Davao City, which is the most modern in the whole Asia, has a life span of fifty years.

"It has a fifty-year lifespan and one year warranty according to the contractor," TMC Chief Celso Gempesaw, said during the weekly Club 888 press conference.

Gempesaw added that the contractor's technicians will maintain the project, but they will also train twelve personnel of Davao City who will take over as soon as they leave the city.

"Dapat eight lang na personnel ang i-train pero gihimo na lang 12 kay kung magkasakit o mag-absent naa pay mabilin (The required number is eight but we made it 12 so that if one of the eight becomes sick or is absent then there are others who can pitch in), so we are preparing 12 counterpart personnel to be trained," Gempesaw said.

The traffic chief added that a control center would also be visible along Ponciano Street to monitor the traffic signalization in all intersections that have traffic lights.

Gempesaw said a re-run on traffic signalization is scheduled by the third week of this month.

"Most likely if not next week, early on the fourth week of January in the three or four intersections," he said.

He added that TMC is being augmented now with 20 police personnel who were deployed to all areas in the city with traffic lights to ensure that the pedestrians and drivers are following the system.

Gempesaw said personnel of the contractor are also conducting traffic counts on the streets to monitor the number of vehicles.

Gempesaw also claimed that Davao City has the most modern traffic lights in the whole Asia.

Techno entrepreneurship to be offered in colleges
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII) already pushed eight colleges and universities in Davao City to include technology entrepreneurship in their curriculum starting June.

Andrei Fournier, one of the board of trustees of the DCCCII and an expert on information and communications technology (ICT), said.

"Last year, two universities have signified that they will include the techno entrepreneurship in their curriculum for this year, but six more schools have also signified--including the St. Mary's in Tagum City and one in Digos City. As far as I remember, AdDu is also one of them," Fournier said in an interview Wednesday.

However, Fournier failed to enumerate the five schools in Davao City that are interested to offer the subject.

Fournier said techno entrepreneurship would help students prepare a business plan. He added that the chamber would set a meeting with the presidents of the eight colleges Friday in order for them to get feedbacks regarding the plan.

"These schools will have three to six units elective for entrepreneurship, actually our colleges are offering entrepreneurship and information technology, but the courses are separate," he said.

It was learned that the chamber will visit also these eight colleges to conduct information drive about techno entrepreneurship.

12 firms keen on Davao tollway project
By Mariano V. Stop
The Philippine Starlight 01/11/2017

At least 12 companies have expressed interest in bidding for the 10-year operation and maintenance of the Tagum-Davao-Digos Expressway (TDDEx).

According to Mindanao Development Authority (MDA) president and chief executive officer (CEO) Narciso Abaya, 12 companies so far have submitted their letters of intent to participate in the bidding for the operation and maintenance of the 193.77-km TDDEx, reputedly the longest toll road in the country.

The TDDEx is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Among those who have expressed interest to participate in the bidding are First Philippine Holdings Corp., Mideast Alliance Resources Corp., SNC Lavalin International, Ausphil Tollways Corp., Pacific Concrete Products, Inc, UEM-MARA Philippines Corp., R.D. Policarpio Co. Inc., Metro Pacific Investments Corp., Ayala Property Management Corp., STAR Infrastructure Development Corp., J.V. Angeles Construction Corp., and Pietras Builders Inc.

Abaya said the operation and maintenance contract would cover toll collection, traffic management, roadway maintenance, general administration, greening and landscaping.

MDA project manager for operation and maintenance and business development Barbara Andal said the MDA has set a ceiling bid of 12.2 percent from toll fees collected within the 10-year contract period.

According to Andal, "if the winning bidder bids five percent, then the firm would receive five percent of the toll fees collected every year for the 10-year contract period."

Andal added that the rest of the toll fees collected would be allotted for debt servicing of the loan used to finance construction of the expressway.

The MDA bankrolled the construction of the project through a P21-billion loan from the government of Japan through the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).

The MDA also secured a standby P2.5-billion credit line facility from local banks to ensure that construction of the 93.77-km toll road would be finished on schedule.

Andal said the contract for the operation and maintenance contract will take effect on May 13 of this year and expire on May 3, 2027.

"We expect the winning bidder to be on board by May this year to familiarize them with the state-of-the-art toll collection system set in place to ensure the smooth operations of toll collection, Andal said.

Davao City traffic lights to have 'eyes' :applause: :applause: :applause:

by RG Alama

Davao City (11 January) -- The P140-million synchronized traffic signalization system dubbed as one of the most modern in Asia will be equipped with high-tech video cameras designed to monitor the intersections where the lights are located.

According to the Celso Gempesaw head of the Traffic Management Center of the City Government of Davao, the cameras along with the monitors will be put in place once the traffic lights are fine-tuned.

He said that they are also waiting for the traffic monitoring equipment which he said will be installed in a centralized monitoring center located beside the present 911 Emergency Response headquarters.

Through the cameras installed in the traffic lights, the technicians in the monitoring center can see the actual traffic flow in real-time and make the needed adjustments.

One of the chief complaints of motorists during the system's dry-run last December was that the timing of the traffic lights unrealistically did not match the actual traffic flow.

The cameras and monitors are part of the package contracted to Abratique and Associates. "It is included in the P140-million traffic signalization budget." Said Gempesaw.

The traffic chief said that the cameras can also be utilized in fighting crime or terrorism. "Any escaping or get-away vehicle will be monitored by our cameras once it passes in our intersections. They can help locate the whereabouts of these speeding fugitives and also the data from these cameras can be retrieved and used by our law enforcers.

The cameras can also monitor traffic violators like jaywalkers and vehicles beating the red light. Gempesaw warned those intending to violate traffic rules just because there no traffic enforcers manning the intersections that their disobedient days are numbered once the cameras will arrive.

Mati: Davao’s best-kept secret

Mati may very well be Davao’s best-kept secret. A tropical paradise tucked within one of the country’s most prosperous regions, Mati has long been enjoyed by locals from nearby communities. But as beach lovers and adventurous travelers continue to scour for more of the Philippines’ island gems, it won’t take time before people enjoy the riches it has to offer and Mati becomes a byword for a great escape.

Beach bound

Situated at the southeasternmost part of Mindanao, Mati is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and at the southern tip, the Celebes Sea. This ideal geographical location not only makes for a long stretch of shoreline of powdery white sand but also of lush, beautiful landscaping.

One destination that has been a consistent local favorite is the Pujada Island. It has a small, fine sand beach on one side, perfect for basking under the sun and rich mangrove on the other with aquamarine waters that hold surprises underneath. The 30-minute banca trip to Pujada is quite a memorable experience in itself as you are greeted by a school of dolphins and if lucky, even white sharks and dugongs or sea cows. A visit scheduled any time from January to May and island guests can even indulge in the sight of migratory birds.

For an exciting encounter with the wildlife, travelers should include a trip to Mt. Hamiguitan in their itinerary. Located not far from western coast of the bay, this tropical forest has become a host to a variety of trees, rare species of plants and bonsai which are believed to be a hundred years old or more. An hours-long treck to the top and be rewarded with the beauty of a hidden lake or what they call, tinagong dagat, which is surrounded by flora and fauna.

Fun and frolic

There is just a lot to see, taste and experience in Mati that a day’s trip will feel regretfully short. Guests can head to Dahican Beach where a leisure stroll can be as much fun as a ride on its waves. “I and my family would like to think of it as returning to the essentials of life. These essentials—beauty, adventure, sustenance, harmony and romance— are the things that modern life has left behind,” said Leo Saballa, a native of Mati and owner of a private resort here in Dahican Beach. There is an activity fit for the whole family. They range from those that will pump your adrenaline—mountain biking, trekking, skimboarding, jet skiing and motorboat racing—to those that will allow you to appreciate the hot springs at Buso, playing with the turtles at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources sea turtle-raising project and partying with the Davaoeños during the Pujada Bay Festival and Sambuokan Festival.

Loco over coco

Louie Rabat, tourism president of Mati, said “best unknown to many, Mati boasts of being the coconut capital of the country.” A large area of its fertile land has been dedicated to produce coconuts, as such it has become a major livelihood among the Mandayas or the native people of Mati. Other agricultural products cultivated by them include corn, cocoa, banana, and pomelo. Mati is also known for their lobsters and fresh seafood such as lapu-lapu.

Mayor Francisco Rabat and his wife Edith Nakpil has turned Mati from an obscure municipality into a vibrant town. “Under my husband’s helm the local government is at the forefront of the development efforts and is actively supported by the private sectors and the NGOs,” the ever beautiful Rabat proudly said.

Davao’s best-kept secret is now out in the open and available for everyone’s inquiry, interest and experience. Let Mati be your greatest southern escape.

Mati is 165 km away from Davao City. Visitors can go to the city by a two-and-a-half hour ride by land, coming from Davao City International Airport.

Davao City eyes P62-M from economic enterprises in 2007
Written by Walter I. Balane / MindaNews

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/09 January) -- The Davao City Economic Enterprises Office is targeting P62.65 million income from economic enterprises this year.

Francisco Vales, Jr., city economic enterprise officer-in-charge, told reporters Monday that his office has surpassed its P50 million target for 2006. The amount, he said, is more than 10 percent higher than actual collections in 2006, but is still a small portion of the city’s revenue.

More than half or P40 million of the target revenue of P62.65 million this year will be drawn from collections in nine public markets run by the city.

The rest are expected from the slaughterhouse (P11 million), the Davao City Overland Transport Terminal in Ecoland (P1 million), Sta. Ana Port facility (P950,000), Cemeteries (P800,000) and Davao City Recreation Center (P300,000).

Vales cited a 400% increase in collections from lot rentals in the city's 10 public cemeteries this year after the implementation of the city's revised revenue code.

The target revenue from economic enterprises, however, is around P10 million short of the approved expenses approved for 2007 at P72.6 million expenses in establishments such as markets, slaughterhouses, sea port and cemeteries.

The city government's overall target income in 2007 is estimated at P1.04 billion from local sources, including P867 million in tax revenues and the city enterprises office's P62.65 million.

The City Council here approved in November a P2.59-billion budget for 2007, half of that from the city’s income from local sources and the rest from the city’s internal revenue allotment of P1.48 billion.

The increase in the budget is based on the projected increase of P311.3 million in income this year.

The city government registered an improvement in estimated income from local sources from 35 percent in 2006 to 43 percent in 2007. The ratio of the IRA as source went down from 65 percent in 2006 to 57 percent in 2007. (Walter I. Balane/MindaNews)

Overseas employment boost travel industry in Davao City
Tuesday, January 09 2007 @ 12:22 PM GMT

The increasing number of Filipinos traveling abroad for employment made 2006 a good year for the travel and tour industry in Davao City, a business executive said.

Margaret Susan Escora of the AME Travel and Tours based in Davao City said the good rates offered by airlines contributed to the upward trend of the travel and tour business last year, but the huge number of travelers to work abroad boosted the business.

This year, the travel agency is targeting to focus on the inbound travel with indicators that more and more travelers are eyeing to visit the city.

Escora was referring to both domestic and international travelers.

"Focusing on the inbound travel however doesn't mean the agency will set aside the outbound travel," Escora said.

The agency's move formed part of their expansion program to cater more to inbound travelers.

She said the agency achieved 10-15 percent growth last year compared to 2005 and is targeting a higher growth this year.

The upward trend in the travel and tour business however resulted to a problem among travel agencies such as the lack of airline seats.

Most of the travelers presume that travel agencies have the privilege for airline seats reservation.

The problem however is being addressed by the airline companies by providing additional flights, Escora said.

Escora identified the first half of the year from March, April and May as "super peak" months and August to December as peak months. (PNA)

A significant increase was observed in the province of Davao del Sur. A 49.21 percent increase in the sugarcane production in the province was noted from 287,423.09 metric tons last year to 428,872.42 metric tons this year.

On the other hand, a decrease of about 18.92 percent in sugarcane production was posted in Compostela Valley. It produced a total of 140.78 metric tons in the second quarter of 2006 as compared to 173.63 metric tons in the same quarter of 2005.

In Davao del Norte, production increased with 58.54 metric tons of sugarcane, 15.15 percent higher than the same period last year, which was pegged at 50.84 metric tons.

However, Davao Oriental produced 2.52 metric tons of sugarcane.

US experts to tweak traffic lights - TMC
By Rizalene P. Acac

FOUR American consultants of Abratique and Associates Philippines, Inc. will arrive in the city before the week ends to further fine-tune the P140-million synchronized traffic signalization program after a test run last month which ended in a disaster. Celso T. Gempesaw, Traffic Management Center chief, said over the weekly business forum Club 888 at Marco Polo hotel that the city government plans to turn the lights back on either by the end of January or the first week of February. He said the adjustments would be more complicated but would respond to the specific requirement of each intersection. During the dry run last December 18, all 27 intersections were turned-on simultaneously causing gridlock to the vehicle traffic. After only three days, the dry run was aborted. This time, Gempesaw said, only three to four intersections will be turned on one at a time. “We will ensure that the timing is correct before moving another intersection,” he said. Gempesaw said the traffic system that was pattered after California and Los Angeles has a one-year warranty. In that period, the contractor will train members of the center on the procedures of operating the system especially when the camera devices are installed. He said a control center will be established beside the 911 Emergency Response Center along Ponciano Reyes St. The center will house the monitor for every intersection where traffic lights are placed. The system could also be used to monitor accidents and crimes, paving way for faster response time for the police and other emergency response teams. Gempesaw said the control center could also record what is seen in every monitor for 12 hours. He said they are also clearing the road of ambulant vendors who sell on the streets instead of occupying 1/3 of the sidewalk. Gempesaw said the contractor should be able to perfect the signalization between now until February and fulfill other obligations since any deficiency would mean no payment. He said once the first phase of the signalization is formally turned-over their center, the city government will immediately start the project’s second phase that will involve additional 22 intersections. Gempesaw said he does not also view the on-going drainage project to the second part of the traffic signalization. The city has a total of 52,000 vehicles playing all the routes of which 20 percent are public utility vehicles.
