Chemas by the sea

SOMEWHERE among impressive beach resorts lined up along the coast of Samal Island facing Davao, there is a hidden paradise that quietly surfaces to soothe the frazzled nerves of weary travelers and stressed folks looking for a cool place to unwind and practically do nothing but smell the sea breeze and look up at the stars at night.

It is aptly called Chemas by the Sea, a title as faintly musical as the melodic and quiet ambience it evokes to visitors.

A family-owned corporation of the Palma Gils, Chemas was named after a grandson whose complete name is Jose Maria Vicente. Couple Quincho Gueco and Princess Palma-Gil Gueco oversee its operations, from its inception until the launching in February 22, and to its regular daily functions. In fact, with their kids in college and in Manila, they love to spend their time in the resort everyday, welcoming guests and thinking of ways to spruce up an already impressive landscaping.

Inspired by the Balinese art designs, the whole beach resort exudes a charm of simplicity and natural beauty, from its cabanas (open huts) with hammocks, the Gazebo dining area with its bamboo sala sets, the sprawling terrain filled with trees and trailing plants in trellises, the wonderful view deck overlooking the sea, all built stylishly from coconut wood and bamboo.

Once a private resort for the family to regularly visit during holidays, Chemas opened to the public with only the barest of amenities, huts and cottages and clean toilets. Now, friends and regular groups often visit for pure relaxation and quiet communing with nature merely a few minutes away from the bustling city life. A bonus is the good food they serve with a P220 per person option of minimum consumable meals of your choice.

A one-way boat transfer would cost P100 for 10 persons or less, or if more, at P10 per person. Access fee is collected by the Waterfront Hotel Davao, which is the jump off point.

A day tour rate (9 a.m.-5 p.m.) costs P75 per person and P50 for kids below seven years old. Overnight rate (5 p.m.-9 a.m.) costs P120 per person and P75 for kids below seven. If interested in a tour or visit, call 224-5222 or 227-6384, or cellphone nos. 09178980203.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/davor.jpg

The verdant forests and blue crystal clear waters serving as backdrop to the winding roads are what greet you upon entering this quiet coastal Province set at the back end of the country.

Perhaps the thought of its backdoor and corner end setting makes one wonder how life in this Province is catching up on the fast-changing trends of the urban centers.

If one thinks the hours here are slow and the days are lagging behind. Think again.

This is where the Philippines' days begin.

For those who have not set foot on the province of Davao Oriental, this is the easternmost tip of the country and this is where the sun shines first. By rough estimate, sunrise here comes eight minutes earlier than sunrise in Manila, or three minutes earlier than sunrise in Davao City.

At the turn of the millennium, the entire country threw its attention to Davao Oriental where the first ray of the Millennium Sunrise was experienced.

Today, Davao Oriental is proud of its stature as the country's sunrise capital. Hence, it is where the Philippines' days begin.

Aside from that, Davao Oriental also takes pride of being the country's coconut capital, producing the largest yield of the country's coconut production per annum, according to the Philippine Coconut Authority.

Davao Oriental's tropical climate and a year-round typhoon-free weather make way for an ideal tourism haven.

The province boast of unspoiled white sand beaches perfect for sports tourism such as surfing, diving, skim-boarding and snorkeling. What's best is that they are located a few minutes drive away from the capital town of Mati.

There are also the amazing tiny islands you can reach in minutes and take a walk around in hours in Waniban and Oak Island.

But among the chief attractions the Province is known for are the mesmerizing bonsai forest atop the pristine Mt. Hamiguitan in San Isidro; the historic Cape San Agustin in Gov. Generoso; the century-old San Salvador del Mundo Church in Caraga; the hot springs of Pangyan in Lupon; the Sleeping Dinosaur Island in Mati; and the captivating Aliwagwag Falls in Cateel.

Lately, townsfolk in Mati curiously found uncanny small creatures wandering about in the lush forests of Barangay Bobon. They turn out to be tarsiers, the world's smallest monkey. Thus, fear not of the tarsier's extinction, their kind is secured in the province.

In 2003, three of the province's towns turned a century old. The province's capital town of Mati and the Disitrict 1 towns of Baganga and Cateel celebrated their centennal anniversaries all in colorful fashion.

Amidst all the bounties and destinations of interest in Davao Oriental, the Province looks forward to modestly emerge as an alternate destination in the South.

How to get here:

Your entry point is Davao City. When in Davao City, Bachelor Express,LCI Bus, Ultra Green, Taxi and other buses are available at the Ecoland Terminal. L300 Vans are available at SM Terminal. Travel time to reach the Capital town Mati is usually 3 to 4 hours. Fare is between Php250.00 (buses) to Php200.00 (L300 vans).

DAVAO CITY - IN BLOOM (The Business Side of It)

We're inviting you all to visit...and maybe invest in Davao!

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/Outlook.jpg

DAVAO!

DAVAO, the city of blooms from islands to highlands, was the site of the 25th ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF), which was held Jan. 13-21.

Indeed, Davao City is blooming and booming. Investments in terms of total capitalization of businesses continued to surge from only P62 billion in 2000 to P69 billion in 2001, P80 billion in 2002, P84 billion in 2003, and to P118.5 billion in 2004. The sharp growth was evident in the city’s tourism, construction, agriculture, and export sectors.

Tourist arrivals based on air passenger traffic and hotel occupancy volume have been increasing since 2000. Davao City’s tourism receipts as of the first semester of 2005 amounted to P5.22 billion, up 13 percent from P4.62 billion in the first half of 2004.

Also, this city has recorded an unprecedented increase in the value of private building construction, hitting P7.4 billion in 2004 from only P773 million in 2001.

So did exports, rising to $993 million in 2004 from $848 million in 2003 and $738 million in 2002, with the balance of trade further widening in Davao City’s favor.

“These figures are making Davao City even more attractive to tourists, many of whom are corporate executives and entrepreneurs on vacation who can’t ignore a business opportunity when they see one,” said secretary general Daniel Corpuz, executive director of Philippine Convention and Visitors Corp.

Davao is the capital of the Southern Mindanao region and one of the world’s largest cities in terms of land area, spanning 244,000 hectares. This sprawling metropolis has emerged as the business, investment and tourism hub of Southern Philippines.

Citing Davao City as the next pillar of Philippine tourism, Tourism Secretary Robert Ace Durano said it was President Arroyo’s personal choice as the venue of ATF 2006. :)

2005 - A Good Year For Davao Region In Trade and Tourism

Foreign investors have been bullish in putting up businesses in the Davao and Mindanao regions this year. There has been much optimism in the trade and tourism industry given the continuous influx of new businesses and tourism projects.

The Philippines Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 11 reported that the region generated over P7.5 billion worth of investments as of September 2005, an 83 per cent increase the same period last year.

Thirteen major conventions successfully concluded here, which gathered at least 20,000 delegates from all over the country and abroad.

These include among others, the National Educators Congress, Philippine Convention of Medical Practitioners, Philippine Nurses Association Congress and 13th Mindanao Business Conference, which gathered foreign diplomats and trade representatives from Australia, Canada, China and the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines-East Asian Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).

One of the biggest investors this year was the Japanese-owned Sumitomo Fruits Corporation (SUMIFRU), which poured in an additional P1.5 billion investments for its banana expansion program in Mindanao.

SUMIFRU is now developing about 4,000 hectares of banana plantations in Davao region's agricultural districts of Calinan and Toril.

Davao region's trade and tourism sectors were also boosted by BIMP countries establishing a US$5-million worth BIMP Multinational Corp. to corner the Middle East market for Halal chickens, which is estimated to be worth US$150 million a year.

The year 2005 was also a good year for the economy of Davao Region as the Philippine government and Saudi Arabia inked an agreement for stronger economic and security cooperation.

Some 27 Arabian officials and trade leaders visited Davao in May for a venture with the local furniture and fruit industries, particularly mango and banana.

At present, trade officials are working on P700 million investment pledges from various foreign and local capitalists, with the agriculture and aquamarine industries as the major beneficiaries.

Potential investments to enter the Davao this 2006 include a P300 million oil filter plant project; P150 million marine processing plants; P100 million Vapor Hot Treatment (VHT) plant; P100 million seaweeds expansion project, P30 million castor oil plantation development and P20-million banana chips processing plant.

Three large-scale mineral resources development projects in the region are now in the pipeline, according to the Minerals and Geosciences Bureau.

The projects are Diwalwal Direct State Utilization in Compostela Valley for gold and silver, Pujada Nickel project in Davao Oriental and Amacan Copper project in Compostela Valley.

The projects are expected to generate over US$400-million revenues yearly and at least 10,000 jobs once in place.

The investments and trade pledges came in as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) implemented over P7 billion worth of infrastructure development projects in Davao Region.

Based on DPWH-11 records, 435 road and bridges were already completed in 2005 while some 240-infrastructure projects are up for completion.

Amid all the development, employment, exports earnings and tax collection Davao region also grew, indicating an overall positive economic performance during the year of 2005.

E-Biz center hastens Davao's economic growth

With the initial operation of the Davao Express Business (E-Biz) Center, the economy of the region has grown faster, the Department of Trade and Industry 11 said.

E-Biz Davao is a one-stop action center, which is one of the major projects of the DTI 11. It is aimed at increasing the economic performance of the region.

Specifically, the Center is designed to: simplify business registration and licensing; facilitate incentives advantage; complement existing efforts in investment promotion and investor assistance; promote registration of new businesses; and facilitate export activities.

Under the E-Biz Center, all government agencies are housed under one roof for faster processing of business transactions.

Based on the comparative report of the EBiz Davao, the number of business name registered (both new and renewal) made a leap of more than eight percent during the first semester of 2005, from 2,468 during the same period of 2004 to 2,695.

The same report said that with the operation of the EBiz Center since March of last year, the processing period of business name registration has been reduced, from more than a week before to an average of three days.

DTI 11 regional director Engr. Merly M. Cruz said that these figures only show that the EBiz Center is effective and a timely strategy.

"With the help of the EBiz Center, I am optimistic that our targets for 2006 will be achieved or even surpassed," Cruz said.

City 'confident' to attain 6-year development target
February 23, 2006

THE Economic Development Committee of the Regional Development Council in Southern Mindanao expressed optimism that the region would achieve its targets relative to the Davao Regional Development Plan for the years 2004 to 2010.

Southern Mindanao Department of Trade and Industry Regional Director Merly M. Cruz reported during a meeting on February 7 that the region has managed to attain 15 percent of the six-year targets for fresh investments, 26 percent of the target for export receipts, and 27 percent of the target for job generation.

Investments, exports, and jobs generated were identified key indicators for the performance of Davao Region's priority industry clusters, consisting of the banana, mango, coconut, seaweeds, wood, mining, eco-tourism, and information and communications technology industries.

The development committee organized the industry cluster teams, composed of industry players from both the government and the private sector, in April of 2005.

This approach was adopted as a key strategy under the Davao Regional Development Plan 2004 to 2010 with the view to harness the region's competitive advantages and explore the global market.

In 2005, banana maintained leadership in exports followed by mango, wood, seaweeds, and coconut industries.

The banana industry raked in a total of $713 million in export earnings for the region, which is 90 percent of the total export earnings of the eight industry clusters.

It also led in terms of investments and employment generation, providing work for 50 percent of the eight industries' total employment, and generating over 30 percent of the total investments.

Foreign destinations of banana included the European Union, US, Russia, China and Canada

Davao City claims lower cost for doing business

Davao City (23 February) -- The cost of doing business in Davao City is very much cheaper, according to Vice Mayor Luis Bonguyan in a speech before busnessmen-golfers recently.

This is one of the reasons why the city has been acknowledged by the renown Asian Institute of Management (AIM) and the United States Assistance for International Development (USAID) as the most competitive city, Bonguyan asserted.

He made the invitation before a capacity crowd of about one thousand golfers and big time businessmen attending the awards night as participants to the 20th PAL Inter-Club Seniors Division at the Venue.

The vice-mayor also encouraged the businessmen to invest in Davao City and avail of both fiscal and non-fiscal incentives already in place making the city business friendly for those whom the top city official regarded as the "lifeblood of the city". He said Davao City has also other advantages for businessmen being the most accessible by land and air transportation and the availability of skilled human resources.

Add to that, Bonguyan said, is the good quality of life and the responsiveness of the adjoining local government units in Mindanao with Davao city as the center of trade and commerce. (PIA/Romy Sabaldan

Gud afternoon herzon! asa ng construction "sea fruit wharf" sa Sasa o Sta. Ana ?

Sa Tibungco. The fruit companies really need a modern wharf area that can handle more than just 1 ship at a time. When this project is finished, the banana boats don't have to drop anchor in the middle of the gulf to wait its turn while another ship is being loaded. BTW, I think this is a private port.

Lol.

The fruit wharf project is a really welcome development. I'm sure it will help the fruit industry in the Davao region and up our fruit exports, ultimately benefiting the national economy.

Yo, i didnt have time to scroll up and check the posters, pero I really loved the Talikud and Kaputian pics. Kung kinsa man nag post, thanks for posting them. Dugay na ko wala ka ad2 sa Talikud ug Kaputian. I think it was 2 years ago when I last visited Isla Reta in Talikud and the public beach in Kaputian. Snorkelling is a pleasure in Isla Reta, not to mention gamay ra ang tawo (at least, kadtong time nga nangadto mi) so solo ninyo ang place.

The recollection reminds me of Samal Casino Resort. It was one of the best resorts I've been to. Sayang nag close. They had great food and the floating bungalows were immaculate. (pero panget ang beach kay batohon... but the floating bungalows more than compensated for the less-than-perfect beachline... enjoy mag snorkeling by the bungalows). Kalami unta if they'd put Samal Casino back into operation.

Tribal villages to be established in Davao region

Davao City (24 February) -- Three tribal villages in the region expected to be established this year will be opened to tourists and other guests but only on tribal days to give them ample understanding of the rich culture of the indigenous peoples.

Department of Tourism (DOT-XI) regional director Sonia Garcia in an interview during the launching of Musikahan sa Tagum at the Harana Pavilion in Davao City on Thursday said they are finalizing the plans with the University of the Philippines and an architect of the Ateneo de Davao University.

She said the pilot villages will be set up in Kiblawan, Talaingod and Sta. Cruz with 20 Bagobo-type houses.

Ten of the houses will be devoted for market oriented trading place while the other half will be places for guests where they can stay.

She said the tribal leaders are a bit excited and open to the development as they are willing to assist in the construction of the houses.

"With the convergence of several government and non-government organizations this will be a habitat-type of constructing the houses on a voluntary basis," she said.

"Although the budget for the project is pegged at P10 million, the contribution of concerned agencies will not be on cash but materials needed for the construction of the houses," she added.

She cautioned however that the introduction of infrastructure will be in coordination with the village tribe because they want to see to it that their cultural heritage is preserved.

"The tribes know this better and by doing so they would also feel how important their cultural heritage is," she said.

She said the villages are their templates and this will be developed so that in the future the community will have facilities where they could receive guests as well as learn to become hosts to visitors.

She said during tribal days of which two are held each year, unique rituals as well as their day to day living will be experienced by visitors.

"There is also a need to teach them how to generate income and this will be part of the process of building the villages," she said.

She said everything in the villages will be natural in the middle of a scenic environment and this will be an experience worth telling by the visitors when they go back home.

Eventually, she said, they envisioned to put up one village for each tribe and in the Davao region, the six major tribes are Mandaya, Manobo, Mansaka, B'laan, Bagobo, and Kalagan.

Dutertes agenda in his 1st and 2nd term was mostly on peace and order program.
But i think his 3rd term will be focus on Economy and infrastractures, kasi establish na ang peace and order ,cleanliness and enviromental concerns
It's better to have evironment first then progress not the other way around.

Araw ng Dabaw: Perking up Davao’s tourism

DAVAO CITY -- Travel industry leaders are optimistic this city could attract thousands of visitors anew when it mounts the 69th Araw ng Dabaw three weeks from now.

Davao’s San Pedro St. near the city hall

Outside of conferences and major events held here, the city’s official tourism calendar lists two major events: the Araw ng Dabaw in mid-March and the Kadayawan festival in mid-August, which generally perk up local businesses from the big shopping complexes to taxicab operations.

While the Kadayawan is being initiated by the private sector with city government support, the Araw ng Dabaw is sponsored by the city government, specifically its tourism office, backed up by the private sector.

"It will be the usual big event, which lures visitors mostly from neighboring provinces and regions," a city tourism officer told BusinessWorld over the telephone on Monday. "We have scheduled the holding of street food and dance festivals next month in addition to the usual events."

This city, which has emerged as the commercial center of Mindanao starting in the 1970s, has attracted major retail trade investments in the last few years resulting in the gradual rise in the number of shoppers from neighboring areas visiting during weekends, or when there are special occasions such as Araw ng Dabaw and the Kadayawan.

Traders and service providers said aggregate sales usually rise by 100% during weekends when these two festivals are held.

On March 16, this city will celebrate its 39th foundation day and organizers said "Piging sa Da’n," a street food festival, would be mounted on the city’s Freedom Park along Roxas Ave. in between Marco Polo Hotel, Ateneo de Davao and Aldevinco Shopping Center.

It would be a nightly affair where restaurant operators as well as caterers would have street booths. The booths are scheduled to operate at the park from March 8 to 17.

To spice up this year’s celebration, city tourism officials said Sayawan sa Da’n would also be introduced. Apparently a takeoff from the successful street dancing of the Kadayawan, Sayawan comprises a series of competitive dance performances along the city’s major streets showcasing the dancing skills of local residents, from ethnic to contemporary.

The competition would be open to all schools, barangays and dance groups based in the city with each group having a minimum of 30 participants with age seven years old and above.

The participants would perform in two venues: San Pedro St. in front of city hall, and at the intersection of Legaspi and Bonifacio streets in front of Apo View Hotel. The dance competition would have a top prize of P100,000 with minor prizes ranging from P5,000 to P75,000.

Over the years, the success of the Araw ng Dabaw hinged on private sector participation, especially during the weekend festivities.

Organizers said they are expecting local establishments to cooperate with the city government to ensure that this year’s celebration would be as big, if not bigger than those held in previous years.

Thus, they added that visitors could expect big discounts offered in shopping malls as well as restaurants and hotels during the days covered by the Araw ng Dabaw weekend.

Last month, the city’s travel industry cashed on the city’s hosting of the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Tourism Forum with over 1,000 local and foreign visitors checking in at local hotels.

Government officials and private sector leaders said aside from gross revenues of over P100 million that benefited the city, the successful holding of the tourism forum here could spark renewed tourism interest in Davao, which has been traditionally classified as a high-risk area for international travelers since it is located in Mindanao.

Just last week, the city also hosted the Philippine Airlines Interclub Golf Tournament, whose participants also lifted the occupancy rate of the city’s major hotels.

City officials said the city’s tourism business would be bullish this year since they have met with organizers of several national and international events that would be held here in the next few months.

It was noted that the city is fast regaining its reputation as a safe destination after the 2003 terror bombings that killed 38 civilians in the city airport and pier. The city’s comparative advantage as a conference and tourism destination, said city hall, is its capacity to host big events, as well as tourism attractions accessible within an hour from the city’s downtown.

On an annual basis, Davao hosts close to 400,000 visitors only 10% of these, however, are of foreign nationalities. Among the top foreign visitors are the Japanese, Americans and balikbayans, South Koreans, and Chinese, including those from Hong Kong.

A significant number of Indonesian and Malaysian tourists also arrive here. Japan, Indonesia, and Malaysia maintain consular offices in the city.

i don't know the name of the project... but it's big. i like investments like this rather than highrises coz this will create more pang "masa" jobs, while the latter is for middle and upper classes. pag may trabaho kasi ang masa, quality of life in all sectors magiging maganda na. and slums will be eliminated slowly therefore preventing the highrise amidst slums pictures.

^That's great! A marina! But they should build one near Samal island and a very ritzy and swanky one, that would easily lure tourists to come to Davao and just enjoy the place. I've been there and I would daresay that Davao is a really great tourists destination!

DENR urged to start geo-hazard analysis
By Rizalene P. Acac

MAYOR Rodrigo Duterte urged the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the region to start a geo-hazard analysis of critical areas in the country to prevent major incidents.

In an interview with the media in Mawab, Compostela Valley Province, Wednesday, Duterte said there is no sophisticated study that would guide the government in identifying areas that are potentially prone to calamities.

He said while there is an existing ground and air ocular study, DENR does not have a comprehensive mapping of places which natural resource have been heavily damaged by industrialization.

Also, Duterte suggested that a plan should be made based upon the study that would be produced by the department.

He said it should consist of an establishment of an early warning system that could inform residents of an incoming disaster. He said the identification of relocation sites should also be incorporated in the plan.

“It is a question of management. It is all about the identification of risk areas and mechanisms on disaster management,” he said.

He added this should be done quickly especially with the advent of industrialization that is taking its toll on innocent and unsuspecting Filipinos.

Duterte added that with the recent misfortune in Southern Leyte, it is the high time to plant more trees. He said he is planning to devolve this function to the community level with the help of non-government organizations.

Earlier, Councilor Arnolfo Ricardo Cabling, said he is intensifying his tree and mangrove reforestation projects in his district. He told media that he will release P1 million for the reforestation project in Paquibato District and P450,000 for the mangrove reforestation in Lasang and Bunawan Districts.

On the other hand, Duterte confirmed a landslide which took place in Carmen, Baguio District last week. However, he denied that this was due to denuded forest.

“Puro pa man mga kahoy ang Carmen. Katong nakahibalo ko nga naay kaingin diha ato dayong gipahunong,” he said.

He said the landslide affected a road and cut off the water supply of three barangays in the district. Duterte, however, said the road has been cleared with mud and the water supply in the barangays were restored. RPA

2005 A Good Year For Davao Region In Trade and Tourism

Those buildings will probaby house a VHT (Vapor Heat Treatment) plant for fruits, especially the mangoes for export; and a cold storage plant for the bananas - para fresh pa sila pag-abot sa Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China ug Middle East.

I agree I would rather see these kinds of construction activities because you know that means JOBS, JOBS, JOBS.

In Focus: DAVAO's Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/mkd.jpg

The Vision

To be the pioneer international college in the Philippines and in Southern Mindanao with state-of-the art technology that caters not only for the Christians, Muslims, and Lumads but for foreign students as well. The college gives preference to ASEAN students

Mission Statement

The Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku aims to equip its academic community with up-to-date knowledge, research capability, and civic consciousness that will propel them to be the pioneering leaders in their respective work arena.

Goals For Each Course

International Studies: Graduates who are proficient in Japanese language both in oral and written communication (Japanese Language Proficiency Examination, 2nd Level). Must be able to teach Nihongo in their respective work place. Must serve as interpreters for both the Filipino and the Japanese nationals.

Those who majored in Language and Literature must be able to speak, read, and write comprehensible English. Must be able to teach the course when they return to their respective countries where English is not the native language. Must be able to work on a job where English proficiency is the main requirement.

Teacher Education: Teachers who are licensed in their respective area of specialization and who have imbibed the value of service to the less fortunate brethren in the far-flung areas. Must be leaders in the educational institution where they are affiliated.

Community Development: Workers who are very adept in community works, networking, sourcing funds and volunteer services. Professionals who spearhead activities that ultimately put the community under their charge in the limelight.

Social Services: Caregivers who are multi-skilled, multi-talented, multi-cultural, and are mentally healthy. They must be oriented towards service more than profit.

History

It starts as a dream… In Davao City, the Japan Philippines Volunteers Association, Inc. is assisting the Filipinos who are Japanese descendants (Nikkeijin) as early as 1980. The first project was Japanese Language School and with it as the benchmark, the association trails its way to an environmental protection project, to a basic education institution, to community medical welfare activities, to educational and cultural exchanges then to a trainees’ dormitory. Now the pinnacle of all dreams emerges… the establishment of a welfare college.

The late Ayako Honda-Uchida dreamed of a welfare college after visiting the city many times. Touched by the deplorable conditions seen in some areas of the metropolis and the plight of the orphaned, abandoned, and neglected children, she funded activities to alleviate their conditions and in the end included a donation of a substantial amount for the construction of a college building.

A committee was formed to brainstorm and prepare for the opening of a college. The name Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission on April 18, 2001. The requirements of the Commission on Higher Education were gradually achieved. This gigantic job of preparing the documents paralleled the constructing of the educational edifice.

The Commission on Higher Education Regional Office XI gave the go-signal for a maximum of five courses. The permits for Bachelor of Elementary Education, concentrations in Early Childhood Education/Special Education and the Bachelor of Secondary Education, majors in General Science/Mathematics were issued on February 13. Then came the permits of Bachelor of Science in Social Services, majors in the Care of Older Persons/Child Governance and the Bachelor of Science in Community Development on May 10. Finally, the permit for the Bachelor of Science in International Studies, major in Japanese Language and Studies was issued on May 20, all in 2002 and all before its formal opening.

On June 3, 2002 the MINDANAO KOKUSAI DAIGAKU opened its doors to high school graduates and baccalaureate degree holders. Representatives of the tri-people---Christians, Muslims, and Lumads enrolled but only a handful of the Nikkeijin did. Twenty-three male and 40 female or a total of 63 students were pioneers.

The grand opening salvo on June 10 was followed by three packaged tours of Japanese students, teachers, and vacationers in the month of August. It was truly beneficial and informative for both parties. Everything is in the spirit of “Gakusai.”

The school year 2002-2003 witnessed the groping yet purposeful and precise moves of the eleven full-time staff and administrators cum faculty and the six part-time faculty members. They worked on the policies, manuals, curricular/ extra-curricular activities, and the regular classes in addition to the entertainment of Japanese visitors.

Elow sa tanan! Story telling 'sa ta. :runaway:

I used to live in one of the oldest streets in Ecoland, called Sparrow Street. WHen I was young (in the early 1980s), my street barkada and I would venture out around our subdivision looking for new perks, new adventures... normal thing for young imps.

One day, we chanced upon a huge hole in the ground on a vacant lot along Eagle Street (by the way there's a new construction going on the site right now... It's still unfinished). After investigating, we found out it looked like a concrete tunnel. A "cave" we would describe it back then. Oh, we were just children back then. And you know how children can overplay the facts.

One of my older friends went inside the dark hole in the ground, the sound of water splashing as he vanished through the darkness. After much anticipation he came out, muddied and soiled, with a piece of wet rock in hand with some faint scrawlings.

We investigated the rock he had brought from that mystical cave and found found what looked like stick figures etched on the stones. The mysterious thing was also laced with lines and curves going in all directions. All of us went inside that little cave and supposed maybe a galleon could be sitting in there somewhere. Of course, children with wild imagination will refuse to realize that the "cave" was too small to even fit a car. (But then again, who knows maybe the hole runs even deeper, and maybe, a galleon is in fact hidden in there somewhere... hahaha)

We went home with the loot and told our elders of the news. The elders went to the site to verify our claims of a mystical cave. We all looked at the stones thereafter. They looked like maps with japanese characters etched on them, blue and red lines and curves criss-crossing them. Could it have been a roadmap? I couldn't say now for sure. That was as far as I could recall. I have no idea what those things we recovered might have been. I might even have imagined them all. Wild imaginations are a staple of young minds, y'know.

Much of the details have vanished to forgetfullness yet much of the fun survived. I would always recall how we young brats for that brief moment, felt like the "Goonies" of Sparrow Street. :bash:

Riverfront Corporate City - WILD WATER ADVENTURE

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/rafthead.jpg

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/raft.jpg

ANYONE who has been to a theme park knows that there is bound to be one staple ride that everyone will want to try but it’s almost a guarantee that everyone will want to go on the Log Ride. The combination of speed and splash is always a hit, no matter how wet one gets afterwards. No doubt about it, Log Rides are always fun, but where can one go for the real thing?

For true wet water fun, River Rafting is the way to go. Rafting is an increasingly popular recreational activity across the globe, spurred by the desire of people to commune with nature, but in a more active and intimate manner than mere sight seeing. River Rafting is an experience like no other, giving man the chance to truly become one with nature as he flows with – or battles against – the current of the river. There is truly no other sport or recreation that captures the sheer rush of River Rafting, eyes filled with the beauty of nature while the sound of the whitewater breaks around you.

It’s an experience that Sonny Dizon knows well – he used to raft along the river himself when he was a boy, and now he has decided to share the thrill with the entire nation, by opening his Davao Wildwater Adventures, River Rafting at New Crocodile Park. Visitors can now – using a variety of rafts from the 3, to the 8 seaters, and even a single seater for the true lone wolf – partake in a wet and wild adventure sure to last at least 3 and a half hours, navigating past churning water and rocky river beds of the "31 Rapid" (in lay man’s terms – that means it’s fast) Davao River, engrossed with flora and fauna. First timers need not worry that all the excitement might get too dangerous, as safety briefings are always conducted before Rafting, by certified first-aid staff (Although there is a minimum age limit of 9 years old). For the entire month of September, the Park is offering a package deal – 1 for just 1,000, not only will visitors get to conquer the river – they get a free lunch to power their endeavors.

Rafting takes place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. For inquiries, call new Davao Crocodile Park, River Front, Corporate City Diversion Highway, Ma-A, Davao City cellphone 0921 539 1176, or landline 082 301 2020.

Interesting news , all we need is the airline!

Durian Air anyone, the only airline that allows durian in the cabin!!! (baka lugi to :))

Vol. XIX, No. 154
Monday, February 27, 2006 | MANILA, PHILIPPINES

The Economy
‘Open skies’ mulled for Subic, Cebu, Davao

The government should consider declaring an "open skies" policy for Subic, Cebu, and Davao international airports in order to boost tourism and encourage competition in the airline industry, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) said.

Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Romulo L. Neri said the government should liberalize airline operations in these major airports for the benefit of customers. "Increased competition would result in cheaper fares, which in turn would encourage people to travel more, thus increasing tourism earnings in these areas," Mr. Neri told reporters.

This after the President issued Executive Order (EO) 500 last January 27, allowing foreign carriers -- particularly budget airlines -- to use the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport in Clark, Pampanga with minimal restrictions. The government is positioning Clark to serve as a logistics hub in Southeast Asia.

EO 500 particularly directed the Philippine air negotiating panel, chaired by the Transportation department and which is set to start talks with counterparts from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Korea on the use of Clark -- "to formalize their special charter permits granted by the [Civil Aeronautics Board, or CAB] into permanent air entitlements." These entitlements are formally known as air service agreements, under which other countries and the Philippines designate the carriers that can operate the routes between them.

EO 500 states that carriers covered by these agreements, hence, allowed to operate cargo and passenger services to and from Clark, can "apply for the waiver of any restriction or limitation on capacity, type of aircraft or non-cabotage traffic rights."

Tourist arrivals for the 10 months to October 2005 grew 13.6% to 2.11 million from the same period the previous year. Tourist arrivals for the entire 2004 was at 2.2 million. The Tourism department expects more than 2.5 million tourists to troop to the country this year.

NEDA earlier said the influx of tourists should help fuel the services sector growth this year. The services sector grew 6.3% last year, contributing 2.98 percentage points to the 5.1% economic growth for the entire 2005. The government aims to grow the services sector by 6.7% this year, in order to hit the government’s full-year economic growth target of 5.7% to 6.3% for 2006.

Meanwhile, the Philippines will discuss with Russia next month proposals to obtain flying rights to Manila and vice-versa, a ranking official of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said. In an interview, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Administration Franklin M. Ebdalin said the air talks panels have scheduled talks for next month.

"They want to fly to Manila. We will negotiate for flying rights for both sides. It’s not open skies," Mr. Ebdalin clarified.

Mr. Ebdalin said the Philippines continues to target additional markets in China, Japan, South Korea, Canada and the United States since they are big sources of tourists. He said Canada and Japan had declined to negotiate more flights, but the government will "keep on pushing."

Manila has flying rights to 50 countries, including member states of the European Union, Mr. Ebdalin said. -- J. O. Valisno and B. S. Sto. Domingo

:bash:

good evening to all!

Actually the facility is a cold storage facility for Chiquita-unifruitti, and not a VHT facility since Chiquita has no mango or papaya business that needs it.

Yo TJ! Tnx.

I haven't checked on Halo yet. The last time I checked was... uhmm... quite some time ago, not sure exaclty when... pero sum tym 4th quarter of last year. NAg gimik mi and napansin nako nidako sya.... ang smoking area naa na sa left sa main door (yosidor... pffft). Hehehe. I haven't been there lately.

I'm not sure If you know this na, pero naay Damosa Compound (dili ko sure kung mao jud ni ang name) kadtong sa may Damosa Complex sa Bajada (Mamay Road)... naa nay murag venue compound style nga gimikan diha. Lots of Bars, naay Comedy Joint, Cafes (Coffee Shops), ug Restos. Naa pud boutiques, souvenir shops, mini-grocers, and other random shops. Nice ang place kaso layo-layo from downtown.

Kani, mas layo... There's also this place sa may lanang.... beside Insular Hotel. Naay Compound-type party enclave didto. Duna nay pipila ka establishments didto pero So far ang ma recall nako nga establishments kay A1 Bar lang. Dako ang place. Naay Billiard hall sa ground floor and a piano bar sa second floor. Industrial ang architecture (if you remember the architecture of BluGre cafe sa MTS... murag ing-ana... modern style sya... kanang type nimo Ehehehe). The downside is dili pa paved ang parking area and usahay lapuk kung mag ulan. Let's wait kung unsa ang ilang further developments sa place basig ayos pud cya.

Di bale, try nako mag regular updates diri about gimmick places. Cge lang sa sunod mag post kog pics diri. Plano nako kanang picture sa gimik-gimik places. Hilig man gud ta anang laag-laag gud, kaso lately murag na-busy ko kay mugradweytay naman! hehehe. :eek2:

" In the north side of downtown Davao is a specialty store called Chimes. Shoppers who go for signature clothes -- from the Gretchen Baretto-endorsed Plains and Prints to Diesel pants to Jack Nicklauss apparel – will find this place enjoyable. Chimes is a comfortable, a three-storey specialty store that houses almost all signature products."

Life as usual in Davao
www.mindanaotimes.com.ph
February 28, 2006

The rest of the country, especially Metro Manila, may agonize over the uncertainties of Presidential Proclamation 1017 that imposed a “state of national emergency”, but life is as usual in Davao City.

The city seems to enjoy a degree of independence from the insecurities and uncertainties of the country’s capital.

Critics may complain, in hushed-up huddles, that his leadership is arrogant and autocratic, but even they would agree that the city is largely peaceful and progressive because of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s pervasive and protective presence.

The troubles of the nation barely ripple the city’s calm; confusion in the nation’s capital barely affects the city’s focus.

It is as if Davao City functions in abstraction of and away from the problems that ail the national government. In circles inside and outside City Hall, people speak, tongue in cheek, of the Republic of Davao.

It is because people – friend and foe alike – know that the mayor is in control of his city, and not even Malacanang can mess around with the way Duterte runs Davao.

Malacanang doesn’t seem to mind the periodic outbursts of Duterte over government policies he finds obnoxious. Or at least Malacanang pretends it neither hurts nor hears.

Is that good or bad? We cannot tell from the perspective of the proximate present but one thing is sure: Davao City calls its own shots and charts its own course.

Let us get hold of a few examples. Davao is the only city that has successfully banned firecrackers and smoking in public places. Whatever resistance there was at the start against these two fiats of Duterte has dissipated in time.

Davao City has the most aggressive and belligerent policy against crime, especially drug-trafficking. The policy, in fact, is so constricting to criminals (because it makes crime a suicidal business) that other cities have emulated it. I will not elaborate.

Time and again, Mayor Duterte has been openly critical of acts and policies of the national government, as well as goings-on in the nation’s capital.

When in July last year groups out to wrest government control were agitating for a people power revolution and the installation of an interim government, Mayor Duterte scoffed at the thought.

“They stage a revolution in Manila,” he said on local television, “I will declare an independent Mindanao Republic.”

When Malacanang invented the “calibrated preemptive response” (CPR) to quell dissent on the streets and disperse anti-Arroyo rallies and marches, Duterte fumed. “Those behind this CPR are idiots,” he declared on television. “It is a clear violation of the constitutionally-guaranteed rights of free speech and peaceful assembly.”

And today, we have the state of national emergency which is a policy that pivots on unsettled legal grounds and borders on the outright suppression of certain freedoms that democracy has long, long time ago defined.

What’s more, whatever “emergency” precipitated the proclamation was confined to Metro Manila and immediate environs. Calling the emergency national expanded the repressive, or call it regulatory, effects of the proclamation nationwide.

When the proclamation was released last Friday, February 24, Malacanang cancelled all rally permits nationwide to preempt the localized problem of anti-Arroyo people massing in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the People Power Revolution.

In characteristic resistance against a government policy he finds objectionable, Mayor Duterte quickly issued rally permits to progressive groups with the simple admonition “not to break the peace.”

Davao City does not have a quixotic and quirky police general Vidal Querol; Duterte will not allow such a quaint character like Querol to harass Dabawenyos in Davao streets.

There will not be any arrest of political oppositionists or Arroyo critics in Davao City; Mayor Duterte believes in the freedom of speech. “The essence of democracy is dissent,” he said on television last Sunday.

There will be no closure of media outlets or arrest of Arroyo media critics; Duterte believes in the freedom of the press.

Violent dispersal of government critics; stifling of the freedom of speech and peaceful assembly; arrest of members of the political opposition; police monitoring of members of the press; harassment of media outlets – all these cannot and will not happen in Davao.

Not as long as Rodrigo Duterte is Mayor of Davao City.

Davao Business News - APL opens new container yard
February 28, 2006
www.dailymirror.net.ph

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/apl.jpg

To cater to the growing business community and to provide employment for the people of Davao City, American President Lines (APL), the top ship-ping lines in the Philippines and abroad, opened its newest container yard and support facilities in Sasa last February 15.

The opening was highlighted by the inau-guration of its newest office, the opening of the main gate, the unveiling of the company's mark, and the ceremonial first lift.

The ceremonies were witnessed by Vice Mayor Luis Bonguyan, councilor Susabel Reta, and APL business partners.

"After a year and a half of construction, the newest office is now open to help Davao exporters and importers," said Maurice McKeating, APL Philippine managing di-rector.

APL is one of the world's largest global logistics, container trans-portation, and shipping companies. The Philip-pines, where the company has been present since 1917, is its key South East Asian market for global ocean carrier. Today it has nine branch offices and extensive operations throughout the country.

Part of the Singapore-based Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) Group, APL is a global top-10 container transportation provider. The company has more than 4,000 employees, a fleet of around 80 con-tainerships, eight ocean, and inland container terminals. It provides more than 10,500 service points in 140 countries.

APL's services to the Philippines are comple-mented by a total global network of more than 100 weekly services and 600 calls at 200 ports in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America. These operations are supported by APL's leading edge e-commerce tools that save our customers time, money and allow enhanced visibility of shipments.

"Our business is to deliver markets worldwide the products of Davao. It's like connecting Davao to the world. Our specia-lization is to bring the fruits of Davao through Reefer or refrigerated container to the world," said Judy Chua, Philippine regional mana-ger for customer support.

APL carries the lar-gest volume in the export market, serving Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. APL boasts of reliable services, the best IT (information technology) tools, and world-class customer service.

APL and its staff are very much part of the community in the Philip-pines. APL supports se-veral charitable initiatives here, including providing space in on its ships for the "Books for Barrios" program, which supports the education of needy children in the Philippines.

While APL is a truly global ocean carrier, it takes pride on its local knowledge of the markets it operates in. After the best part of a century, APL remains committed to the Philippines, and, together with its business partners, serving this increasingly important location into the future.

"We know that Davao is developing and economically progressive. That's why our company wanted to invest here," Chua said.

DAVAO BUSINESS NEWS - Japanese businessmen eye investments in coco-diesel
www.mindanaotimes.com.ph
March 1, 2006

A GROUP of Japanese investors has explored the possibility of producing in commercial quantity coco-biodiesel in the city.

Lornito Orillaneda, Philippine Coconut Authority regional director, said the 21-member team that also included five Japanese government officials met with officials of the Philippine agencies in the Davao Ciity Monday night to discuss investment opportunities in the region.

“They were here for re-exploration as they were here before to look for investment opportunities,” said Orillaneda, pointing out that one investment area that attracted the Japanese was the coco-biodiesel production considering that the Davao Region is the main coconut producer of the country.

Orillaneda said the Japanese investors were particularly interested in coco-biodiesel production because this is an environment-friendly product and by producing it, they can support the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, an agreement that aims to reduce emission of the so-called greenhouse gases, including carbon monoxide, a harmful gas emitted by vehicle as a result of an incomplete combustion of fuel.

Coco-biodiesel, or coco methyl ester, is an alternative fuel added to regular diesel to reduce carbon monoxide emitted to the environment. Studies showed that aside from reducing emission, the product also enhances vehicle performance.

Some companies have started selling pre-mixed coco-biodiesel, or a product containing one percent of coco-biodiesel. Although it is sold higher than the regular diesel, advocates of the product claims the benefits are greater.

Orillaneda said if the plan of the Japanese investors pushes through, then it would be better because it will not only create employment but will also mean additional businesses for Davao Region, and eventually for the country.

At present, he said, the Philippines has to import coco-biodiesel even when if the country is among the top producers of coconut and its by-products like copra.

Last year, Davao Region exported $40.6 million dollars of coconut products, the Department of Trade and Industry reported.

The city government has identified alternative fuel industry as among the priority industries it will give incentives to so it could attract investors. City Administrator Wendel Avisado said last week that the city government is willing to provide incentives to industry investors even if the proposal to include it in the priority list of areas of investments has yet to be approved.

Avisado said the willingness of the city government to intensify promotion of the city as good area for investment in alternative fuel industry is because it is among the participants of the Clean Cities program, a United States Agency for International Development–funded project for the reduction of harmful gases in the atmosphere.

Meanwhile, Orillaneda said the Japanese government representatives, headed by Tohru Kuramata, Ministry of Foreign Affairs-Southeast Asian Division regional coordinator, have expressed willingness to come up with financial assistance mechanisms to help local investors.

However, he added, there is no final commitment yet, although the group has committed to come back to the region soon.

Bank extends P2.96B in loans to priority sectors in Davao
link (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2006/03/02/bus/bank.extends.p2.96b.in.loans.to.priority.sectors.in.davao.html)

THE Land Bank of the Philippines' total loans to its priority sectors in Davao Region reached P2.96 billion as of the end of 2005, 20.61 percent or P.506 billion higher than the P2.45 billion registered in 2004.

The bank's priority sectors include the small farmers and fisherfolk, small and medium enterprises and microenterprises, agribusiness, agri-infrastructure, and environment-related projects.

Land Bank of the Philippines vice president Joselito P. Gutierrez explained that the P2.96 billion is 85.30 percent of the region's total loan portfolio of P3.47 billion last year.

"Land Banks's loan assistance to its priority sectors in Southern Mindanao reflects our strong support for key sectors that spur economic growth in the countryside. We will continue channeling our resources to these pump primers of the local economy which we consider as development partners," Gutierrez said.

The bank's releases to small farmers and fisherfolk increased by P167.8 million from P707.8 million in 2004 to P875.6 million in 2005.

Share of loans for agri-infrastructure projects of local government units increased to P1.07 billion from P.752 billion in 2004, while share of loans for agribusiness and livelihood projects reached P1.56 billion and P328.23 million respectively.

The City Government of Davao is the biggest local government unit loan recipient in the region with the amount of P990 million.

Loan proceeds would be used to finance heavy equipment and farm-to-market roads, among others.

Araw ng Dabaw 2006: Perking up Davao’s tourism

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/arawngdabaw.jpg

Davao City -- Travel industry leaders are optimistic this city could attract thousands of visitors anew when it mounts the 69th Araw ng Dabaw three weeks from now.

We are inviting you all to visit DAVAO! :)

Heart center gets more equipment
By Antonio M. Ajero

THE first batch of P200-million worth of heart equipment granted by the Dutch (Netherlands) government arrives Friday, according to Dr. Gerardo Cunanan, DMC chief.

The equipment will be installed in the three-story heart center building constructed from the funding assistance of P75 million from the pork barrel of former senator Ernesto Maceda in 1998.

The second batch of equipment from the Dutch grant is expected in April and because of this, the center will begin performing open-heart surgeries in July or August, Dr. Cunanan said.

Cunanan said that DMC has a team of surgeons and nurses trained in performing open heart surgeries.

He said the initial funding assistance from Maceda was enough only for the construction of what might be considered the skeleton of the heart center and a few heart equipments.

"Anyway through the years, nakakuha mig ginagmayng funding, so we were able to slowly built the first, second floor and now we're building the third floor," the DMC director said.

He said the heart center, which will cater to patients in Mindanao, is good for least last 50 patients at a time.

Dr. Cunanan said the heart center is just a portion of a multi-specialty complex in the grand plan of the Davao Medical Center. In the planning boards are other specialty units to rise adjacent to the heart center such as the lung center, the kidney center and the cancer or oncology center.

Based on his long experience in managing DMC, Cunanan said hopefully all specialties will be completed in the next 10 to 15 years.

As of now, the DMC is the best-equipped hospital in Mindanao.

GABI-DARCHINYAN WEIGH-IN TODAY IN CALIFORNIA

Talented Filipino southpaw Diosdado "Prince" Gabi and fast-talking IBF flyweight king Vic Darchinyan take to the scales today for the official weigh-in of their 12-round war tomorrow at the Chumash Casino Resort in Sta. Ynez, California.

The brash-talking Darchinyan will defend his IBF and IBO titles against the soft-spoken Freddie Roach-trained Filipino, who hails from Davao City, Philippines.

Solar Sports will air the fight live tomorrow starting at 12:30PM, with a replay at 9PM.

The bout will also be beamed live in Australia by Main Event starting at 3PM Sydney time.

The Chumash Casino Resort, which is a two-hour drive from the Wild Card Boxing Club, is located in Santa Barbara County in California, between Los Angeles and San Francisco, in the heart of the beautiful Sta Ynez Valley wine country.

Gabi will be joined at today's weigh-in by trainer Freddie Roach and assistant trainer Eric Brown, as well as his manager Michael Koncz, cutman Joe Chavez, retired police officer Robert Peters and Jeudy Martinez, Gabi's personal fitness instructor at LA Fitness where the Filipino southpaw has been working out the past three months.

Last Friday (Saturday in RP), Gabi sparred for the last time, doing five rounds against a regular sparmate at Wild Card, then skipped rope for 10 minutes, hit the speed ball for another 10 minutes and shadow boxed for 5 rounds. He did the same routine the following day, except that instead of sparring he did four rounds on the mitts with Eric Brown. Sunday was a day off.

Last Monday (Tuesday in RP), after jogging 4 miles, Gabi and his manager went to the Wild Card where Freddie Roach had Gabi do a light workout consisting of 10 minutes on the speed ball, jump rope 10 minutes and shadow boxing for 4 rounds.

On Tuesday, Gabi and Koncz stayed home and took part in the telephone press conference at 11 am then at 6:30 PM Gabi and Koncz went to the LA Fitness Gym where the fighter ran on the treadmill for 25 minutes to control his weight.

Gabi dedicates world title fight to Davaoeños

Filipino challenger Diosdado (Prince) Gabi said the other day he will do what it takes–at the risk of his own life–to dethrone unbeaten International Boxing Federation and International Boxing Organization flyweight champion Vic (Raging Bull) Darchinyan in their scheduled 12-round bout at the Chumash Casino Re-sort in Santa Ynez, Cali-fornia, on Friday (Satur-day morning, Manila).

Both Darchinyan’s titles will be on the line in the battle of southpaws.

"In my heart, I know I am going to win," said Gabi through his Canadian manager Michael Koncz. "But if I don’t, I will leave everything in the ring."

Gabi’s declaration only meant one thing. It’s do or die for the Prince who would be King.

"I left my wife (Joy) and young son (Prince) behind when I came to the US last August to pursue a world title," he said. "I think about them all the time. I worry a lot about them. I worry they will run out of food. We come from a very poor family. My father is a fisherman. All we eat sometimes is what he catches. I try to send them as much money as often as I can."

Gabi, 26, said he will return home to the Philip-pines only as a world champion.

"Twice, I was pro-mised world title fights but they were postponed," he continued. "This fight means so much, not just to me but for my family and everybody from my home-town of Davao City. They have never had a world champion. It makes me proud to know that I have the whole city behind me for this fight. There are people praying for me to win. They are so suppor-tive of me. It makes me work harder. I train six days a week and do 564 sit-ups a day."

Gabi said there is no tomorrow for him because if he blows this chance, there will probably not be another opportunity to capture a world crown in the near future.

"I have waited five years for this opportunity," said Gabi who lost a deci-sion to then-World Boxing Federation superflyweight champion Samson Dutch-Boy in his first attempt to win a world title in 2001. "I am ready to fight. I am very eager and excited. I am confident and in great shape. I feel I have the style to win the title. I respect Darchinyan and know he is a strong and powerful puncher. He hits like a featherweight. I have a lot of knockouts in my record but I don’t have the one-punch knockout power that he has. I feel I have good boxing ability and that is what I plan to do against Darchinyan. To stand and exchange would be a mistake. That’s what he wants. I am not a runner but I am faster than he is. I plan to use my speed to give him angles. I want to be elusive and make him work to catch up to me."

Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach will be in Gabi’s corner for the bout which airs live on the US Showtime cable net-work as the main event of "ShoBox: The New Gene-ration."

The fight will be tele-cast at 12:30 p.m. this Sat-urday on the Solar Sports channel with a replay at 9:30 that night.

Tickets for the match are priced from a low of $30 to a high of $70.

Darchinyan, 30, was born in Armenia and now lives in Australia. His trainer is former three-time world champion Jeff Fenech and his US pro-moter is Gary Shaw whose fighters include Diego Corrales, Winky Wright and Pacquiao.

Darchinyan has shown no respect for Gabi and is clearly looking beyond the Filipino in planning for his next fight. He could pay dearly for the overconfi-dence.

"After I take care of business with Gabi, I want Jorge Arce," said Darchin-yan, referring to the flamboyant World Boxing Council interim champion of Mexico. "We met face to face and I told him I wanted to fight him. He’s a tough fighter but he’s not smart at all. He comes straight at you. He doesn’t run. He comes forward and I can stop him. I know I can beat him. I will destroy him."

Roach said odds-makers shouldn’t rule out a Gabi victory.

"Gabi has a lot of skills," he noted. "He can box and he’s got power, too. It’ll be a competitive fight."

As usual, Roach declined to predict the outcome and only said Gabi will come to fight and to win.

Gabi is giving up over four inches in height to Darchinyan and will try to dazzle the Armenian with his speed. He boasts a 26-2-1 record, with 18 KOs. Gabi has not lost in his last 14 outings dating back to 2002. His only setbacks were disputed decisions to Samson and another Thai, Sot Sor Veerapol, in Thailand.

Gabi has scored eight first round knockouts, indicating he’s a fast starter. Darchinyan’s re-cord is 24-0, with 19 KOs and only one in the first round.

DAVAO ENTERTAINMENT NEWS :)

Live TV active in Mindanao

DAVAO CITY- LOCAL media is bustling, alive and well in Davao City. A recent trip to the heart of Southern Mindanao updated us on the latest media activities down south.

ABS-CBN Minda-nao has beefed up its local programming with the launch of (or re-launch in the case of some) of four new shows. These include the amateur singing contest, Little Big Star; the comical talk show, "DDS" or "Dinhing Dapita Sadya"; the kiddie program, "Okkido"; and the teen-oriented Kapamilya Sabado Party.

On the news and current affairs front, regional manager Danny Luzon said the station has just re-launched TV Patrol Southern Minda-nao, a full 30-minute report on news unfolding in and around the region. The 17-year old Davao-produced Patrol has just welcomed a new anchor, Atty. Melissa Suarez, a beauty and brains package, joining main anchor, the gutsy Stephen Ma-nangan. Suarez is a practising lawyer, law professor, and author of law books.

The station also airs morning show, "Maayong Buntag Mindanao." Luzon said that while it has been proven that locally-produced shows are well patronized by Minda-naoeños, meager resources prohibit them from coming up with more homegrown programs.

Cristy Garcia, the network’s head of entertainment, however, expressed hope that the plan to produce a locally produced teleserye may soon take off. The idea has been on the network’s drawing boards for sometime.

‘We are not wanting in talents, either,’ she said. Garcia is coun-ting on a good number of theater groups existing around the region, which can provide the actors we need,’ she said.

The lead players may be recruited from Manila, just like what the network has done with Little Big Star in Davao. The singing contest for children is hosted by 16-year old Nikki Bacolod, originally from Iligan City, but who has made a name after finishing first runner-up in the Search for A Star in A Million in Manila.

Garcia said ABS-CBN Davao is quite upbeat about "Dinhing," which loosely translates in Tagalog to ‘Dito sa Banda Rito, Masaya.’ Aired Sunday mornings, 11 to 11:30 a.m., "DDS" offers laughter and a generally feel-good mood with segments ranging from free make-over sessions in the barangay, cook-outs, and public service. The show is hosted by the wacky trio of Id Acaylar, Onie Alfaro, and Ian Ray Garcia. A four-man Dabaw Dyoks Squad composed of Bambam, Ruben, Anoy, and Boyet delivers gag lines.

Garcia, information officer at Davao Tourism Council, said DDS used to stand for notoriety among Da-vaoeños. It used to mean Davao Death Squad, referring to an un-known, mysterious band of killers accused for the summary execution of notorious criminals in the city.

‘We have turned it around. Now, DDS means be happy, laugh every Sunday,’ said Garcia.

Nordic countries, a good market for local products
March 2006

DAVAO CITY - THE presence of a strong import promotion program in the Nordic countries is a great chance to market local products there, the Department of Trade and Industry 11 said.

The Philippine Trade and Investment Center (PTIC) in Stockholm, Sweden, which is an attached agency of DTI, is presently working with the import promotion offices of Sweden, Denmark, and Norway.

Each of these offices provides a number of assistance to potential exporters from other countries such as the Philippines. Among the support that these offices extend are market information and advertising the potential exporters for free in their respective business newsletters which in turn are disseminated to their member-companies.

Beyond giving out market information, the Association of Swedish Chambers of Commerce, in coordination with the business organization of the Nordic countries, could assist in business matching of a sales mission going there.

The Association of Swedish Chambers of Commerce is the import promotion arm of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

With the population of the three countries which is pegged at over 14 million, the Davao Region would have a huge market to showcase and sell its export products, said DTI 11 regional director Engr. Merly M. Cruz.

“The Nordic countries have never specified any products that prefer. Therefore, all of our products here could be brought there for marketing and selling,” she said.

All interested parties could browse www.cci.se (English) for more information about the assistance being offered by the Swedish Chamber of Commerce.

Ic, in Bajada. As far as I remember, is that where downtown Davao is? My uncle who lives there is in Panacan.

The 2nd photo caught my eye. It reminds me of the 'hilltop' the last time I was in Davao overlooking the city.

With the 2nd Photo...i bet that was taken from Jack's Ridge Area. Have u been to Jack's Ridge before? It's better than Hilltop! ang dami kc resto bars dun sa Jack's Ridge eh..may pool, coffee shop, resort, etc! Sa Jack's Ridge, u can see the whole of Davao Downtown.. sa Hill Top (since mas mataas sya) u can see more than the downton area :)

Before we talk about taking off in tourism, we need to build more hotels. International standard ones at that. I went to Bagobo Inn sa Illustre a few days ago, and wow what a flea trap. Looks nice initially but after a while, dami mong nakikitang di maganda.

Quizon and Durian are for sale but both are not international standard. Sayang.

Talked to Roy Lopez of HLURB sabi niya they have not received any proposal for new buildings, hotels! specially big ones!

I think that's one of the biggest problems in Philippine tourism. the lack of tousim facilities and infrastructures. Davao has the culture, great resorts and warm people but if the city is very serious and poised to draw more tourists, it should start by building more hotels. Davao should learn from Cebu's mistake, where the island today has to decline incoming tourists and convention bookings coz hotels are always fully-booked.

tourism is always chicken and egg...it's like "field of dreams" if you build it they will come but of course they don't always do so.

how to convince the people to do it would be good. if I had the money i'd put up one hehe and might as well make it 300 meters while were' at it haha.

Hi

Hi Bustero! maybe it's more appropriate to talk to DOTXI about hotels and tourism projects! I know there constructing the eco-toursim in Baracatan and the Tribal community Villages.

How big is it? In general HLURB must approve all land use within the region, if it's a small building or a bunch of cottages, it won't register on the radar. I refer to big tix hotels which is what we need in Davao.

Speaking of DOT, I didn't realize Kiling Dacudao has passed. (Sugarboy who is a relative told me). Quite sad since she was quite a live wire and regional head for a long time.

@ bustero: kung nagkataon lang na nanalo ako nung 150 M lotto draw, i'll invest it in tourism-related business (in excess sa T-bills). hehe.

@ rusty: tama ka. davao, i think, is not serious or less effort when it comes to tourism campaign. come to think of it, during the ATF held here last january... well, of course we need to impress the delegates. ye its done. but our mayor here were too vocal to say that davao is selective by not welcoming sex tourists... that we only welcome family-oriented tourist activities... that we dont welcome bad tourists... that when a tourist violates, he'll be punished. he even turned down CNN to have one-on-one interview. and it raised eyebrows among western esp american delegates. on the positive note, asians praised duterte. even the singapore team (2007 host) said they find it hard to surpass the success of davao atf. and i think tama ka, davao has culture but it lacks hotel rooms (for bookings in the near future). wow! davao is singapore in the making. while cebu is hongkong. hehe.

heres the new lyrics of enya's orinoco flow...

Enya - Orinoco Flow Lyrics

Let me sail, let me sail, let the Orinoco flow.
Let me reach, let me beach on the shores of Tripoli.
Let me sail, let me sail, let me crash upon your shore.
Let me reach, let me beach far beyond the Yellow Sea.
De de de de de...
Sailway,...

From Davao to Palau in the shade of Avalon.
From Fiji to Tiree and the isles of Ebony.
From Peru to Cebu, feel the power of Babylon.
From Bali to Cali, far beneath the Coral Sea.
De de de de de...
Sail away...

Turn it up...Adieu, ooh.
From the North to the South, Ebudau unto Khartoum.
From the deep Sea of Clouds to the Island of the Moon.
Carry me on the waves to the lands I've never seen.
Carry me on the lands I've never seen.
We can sail, with the Orinoco flow.
Wecan sail away...

We can steer, we can near with Rob Dickins at the wheel.
We can sigh, say goodbyeRoss and his dependencies.
We can sail away (repeat and fade).

Philippine airline Asian Spirit to fly Palau
Ollie Quiniquini, Manila (2006-03-01)

DOMESTIC carrier, Asian Spirit, is going regional by launching flights to Palau next month. The carrier will mount thrice weekly Manila-Davao-Palau services from April 2, using British Aerospace BAe-146 jet aircraft seating 105 persons in a mono-class configuration.

Palau was chosen as the Asian Spirit's first regional destination as the Hong Kong and Singapore routes are already serviced by a number of airlines. At present, only Continental Micronesia flies to Palau from Manila.

According to the Asian Spirit marketing department, Filipino leisure tourists and dive groups will be the target markets for this new route via Davao.

The marketing department is currently preparing hotel and dive packages for the Filipino outbound market and intends to also work with Philippine inbound tour operators and Davao-based travel agents to offer Davao-Palau packages to the international market.

Congratulations to Ms. Lia Andrea "Lian" Aquino Ramos. :applause: :applause: :applause:

Dabawenya tops Binibining Pilipinas 2006 - Universe
March 06, 2006

A DABAWENYA wowed the crowd, earned the judges' approval, and romped off with the most-coveted Binibining Pilipinas-Universe 2006 crown in the Bb. Pilipinas pageant, midnight Saturday.

Lia Andrea "Lian" Aquino Ramos, a BS Psychology graduate of the University of the Philippines-Diliman and alumnae of Ateneo de Davao University, bested 24 other candidates.

She is the first Bb. Pilipinas top plum winner from Davao City.

Ramos was an early favorite, grabbing the two special prizes in the first part of the pageant -- Miss Photogenic and Best in Swimsuit.

She went on to get the special prizes for Philippine Airlines (PAL) and the candidate with the "Most Beautiful Hair."

She breezed through the question and answer portion, where she was asked by Belgium Ambassador to the Philippines Gregoire Vankadis what country she would want to live in aside from the Philippines and she chose France.

"I'm a self-confessed Franco-phile and I'm very much fascinated with their culture, with their language," she said.

She capped her short spiel with "C'est la vie!" the French phrase meaning, "It is the life."

Her French phrase was no put on too, as she speaks French as well, having studied the language in Alliance Francaise de Manille, a French school in Makati.

"I'm really so glad. But, actually, it is not sinking it yet. I'm still trying to talk to my mom in the States," Ramos said Sunday morning, admitting she was busy all morning answering text messages and phone calls.

Her family is now in the US and it's a double celebration of sorts because her mother also has just passed the state board exam for nursing in California, USA.

Her mother, Sally, was the former school nurse of ADDU. Her dad, Ferdinand Ramos, was a former bank executive and popular golf enthusiast where he once had a golf sports column in erstwhile Ang Peryodiko Dabaw (the predecessor of Sun.Star Davao).

Before the pageant, she was already a standout and became the subject of a rumor that she is a US resident and only claimed to be from Davao.

She readily dispelled this rumor when she said that she has been working in Manila for the past two years.

She works with The Asia Foundation as an assistant program officer for the foundation's law program. There, she assists two lawyers who tackle programs for judicial reforms, jail decongestion, mediation, and she do research on access to justice where she gets to work with jail managements as well as non-government organizations.

The Asia Foundation is a non-profit, non-government organization that supports programs in Asia that help improve governance and law, economic reform and development, women's empowerment, and international relations.

She said, her work in jails was among those asked of her during the pre-pageant interviews.

Her aunt, Tita Tagle-Aquino, who was cheering her all the time, said her exposure left a good impression to the judges making her stand out among the 24 other candidates.

"Law is an option for me. But, I'm more interested to do foreign service. I dream of joining the diplomatic corps," she said.

In the meantime, she added, she has to work hard for the upcoming Miss Universe pageant in May.

"They (Bb. Pilipinas Foundation) are focusing on me because the Miss Universe pageant is much nearer compared to the two other pageants, the Miss International and Miss World," she said.

She added that she may be brought to Colombia for further training but this is not sure yet.

Asked about Davao, she said, the city holds a lot of fond memories and she cannot help missing it.

"I love going to the beach. I'm just a sun baby and just going to Samal with friends and family, is really fun for me. I love seafood, that's what I miss most here, that is why I eat all the crabs, shrimps, panga that I can whenever I'm there," she added.

But because of work, she has not visited Davao as frequently as she would have wanted to.

"I get to visit Davao because of my work. But the last time I was there for a short vacation was in November last year. So, it has been quite sometime that I haven't visited Davao," she said.

Tagle-Aquino, who acted as her guardian because Ramos's is already in the US, said her niece, has been wooed to join the Bb. Pilipinas for sometime now, but it was only last January when she finally gave in to the prodding.

"In the past three years, she was really being eyed already to join the pageant because her sideline is modeling," Tagle-Aquino said.

She does modeling jobs whenever she needs extra money for school.

Ramos just arrived home from a vacation with her family in the US when her agent pestered her to join the Bb. Pilipinas search, her aunt said.

Ramos confirmed that the invitation to join the pageant came as early as 2001.

Asked why she didn't accept the invitation to join the search earlier on, she said, "I didn't feel that I was ready then. I felt that I was still very raw."

"But for some reason, when the invitation was made again, some inner voice told me that I was ready for this now," she added.

Her "discoverer," she said, is the same person as the one who discovered Gionnah Cabrera, the 2005 Bb. Pilipinas-Universe.

Her childhood friend April Evangelista says Ramos always excelled in their class, although they were just the regular teens who loved going to malls and watching movies.

April admitted she and two other friends were glued to the television Saturday night as they cheered on their friend.

She said that while they were schoolmates since elementary, it was only in first year high school that their "barkada" was formed.
