Father ko naman is from Republic of Bohol. His parents migrated to Davao-in Bansalan in 1942. My dad who is the eldest child was only an infant at that time circa WW2. They moved to Sta. Cruz Davao Sur in mid 40s as it is closer to Davao City where modern facilities were already in place.

Mayor frowns upon new Davao biz chamber
By Antonio M. Ajero

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte declared his all-out support for the projects and activities of Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII)

The mayor made his declaration of support to the award-winning chamber as he bared his disfavor over reported attempts of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) to organize a rival chamber in the city to spite the DCCCII, which had disaffiliated from the PCCI months ago.

Duterte used the vernacular term "yagaw" (cacophonous or chaotic) to describe the situation once another chamber of commerce is established to compete with the DCCCII.

"It's not good for business, not good for everybody; a good compromise is to be together again," Duterte said in a well-applauded message to more than a hundred businessmen attending the 39th induction of new officers and awarding of the DCCCII at the Waterfront Insular Hotel.

Commenting further on the soured-up relations between the local chamber and the PCCI, the mayor explained that some people in the capital can not help but be afflicted with the so-called "Imperial Manila frame of mind," wherein some Manilans expect provincianos to tow the line "otherwise you get a spanking."

The DCCCI disaffiliated last year when the Manila-based PCCI changed the configuration of the regional setup of the chambers of commerce in Mindanao without consultation.

The PCCI stuck to its decision when after the DCCCII and the Mindanao Business Council officials asked it to reconsider.

Duterte vowed that he would always give time to listen to businessmen as he encouraged chamber leaders to ask members to immediately expose graft and corrupt practices committed by City Government personnel.

During his speech, the mayor updated chamber members with city projects and apologized for the delay and imperfections in the implementation of the multi-million traffic signalization project.

A portrait of Bolton Isla
By Carlo P. Mallo

THE muggy odor emanating from the Davao River was a cocktail of decaying matter, livestock manure, and something else beyond comprehension. And for one who has never been to this place before, it was overpowering.

Even residents of the place agree that the stench of the place sometimes is really beyond what one can bear. I wonder how they are able to cope with it, having resided in the area over the ages.

While walking along an alley right by the riverbank, one could see that waves of trash and rubbish slap the shallows. Right along the riverbank too are stalls selling home-cooked meals. Appetizing is a word that cannot be associated with the sights and smell.

Livestocks are kept in pens by the riverbanks, toilets that directly flush out to the river, decaying matter floating around, children splashing and basking, and older men fishing, this is how Bolton Isla looks like on a normal day.

I went to Bolton Isla not knowing anything about it except for a vague idea that it is among the densely populated inner city settlement. I came prepared for the worst, but now I know the worst in my imagination didn't even come to par with the worst that I saw.

We were sent there to look into the state of the toilets.

It was a realization, however, that you can't just ask about that outright. At the start, everyone we asked claimed they have toilets and that they find it very important that every household should have a toilet of their own. True enough, only a handful did not have any form of toilet in their houses. But having toilets and having the proper toilets are two different realities.

Most of the people who have toilets also claimed that they have septic tanks... at first. They later relented, admitting that their toilets directly flush out to the river.

One resident even claimed they're doing the river any harm anyway since what they are flushing out are organic matters. While another resident said the feces will be swept away by the current anyway and this poses no harm to anyone.

It seems that the river is not any different to a septic tank, it has all sorts of rubbish and debris that one could imagine. Maybe the people were right and
in fact telling the truth that they do have a septic tank; only that it is called the Davao River.

I do wonder too why the crane is that tall when they are only erecting a 3 storey edifice. Any comments from our very own architect-Clark and engineers around?

# 45 minutes from downtown over mostly cemented roads
# 20o C (68o F) average temperature
# Vegetables and flowers from temperate countries have been successfully planted
# Low density layout and low buildable are to ensure nature setting
# View of Davao City, Davao Gulf and Samal Island
# Wild cats, wild chicken (sarimanok), monkeys, various butterfly species, owls, hawks and other rare birds observed on site

Wild Cat =Musang ?
Wild Chicken = Sarimanok ??? akala ko kasi legendary bird lang ang sarimanok.

Wild Rooster is Manok Labuyo in tagalog.

High rise or medium rise buildings use tower cranes during construction for easy and fast movement of construction materials within the site. Judging from the picture, the radius of the crane can cover the whole site.

Trivia: 12% of the world's tower cranes are here in Dubai. One of our projects which requires 100 buildings will have 100 of those simultaneously.

Davao City is strategically located in Southeastern Philippines. It has air and sea linkages to major points of destination in the country and the rest of the world. Goods and people can also be transported by land via the Philippine-Japan Friendship highway.

The new Davao International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the Philippines with daily flights to major destinations in the country. Davao City also serves as your gateway to the sub-regional trade bloc known as the East ASEAN growth area with direct flights to Singapore and Indonesia. Modern infrastructure and facilities present in the City provide businessmen access to the 20 million market of Mindanao and the 56 million market of the BIMP-EAGA.

Davao - The City In Bloom

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/sml5.jpg

There are beautifully vivid reasons why Davao is called a “City in Bloom”. Aside from the presence of vast plantations and garden resorts that grow rare and exotic orchids and ornamentals, the City is specifically known among florists all over the world for its famous waling-waling, considered as one of the most beautiful orchids.

The Waling-waling or vanda sanderana grows in natural abundance in its territory, at the foot of Mt. Apo. Orchids just love to grow majestically in the City because of its typhoon-free weather. Add to that the fact that the city has more than 1,000 square kilometers of lush tropical forest (or about 47% of its total land area) that provided an environment conducive for rare plants to thrive and flourish. Another factor is the rich fertile soil of the city that can virtually make every wind-blown seed grow and bear fruit even without the benefit of human intervention. Virtually, all ingredients are present for Davao City to blossom and bloom magically like the waling-waling.

All these factors contributed to the eventual declaration of Davao City as the official “Orchid Capital of the Philippines” as declared by then President Corazon Aquino.

‘Biodynamic’ Products Now in Davao

DAVAO CITY — A store selling 100 percent pesticide-free food products will be finally opened here today, a move considered as a breakthrough in the growing world of alternative food production and consumption.

Opening the niche to the public is the Don Bosco Foundation for Sustainable Development or Don Bosco, a prime-mover in the science of biodynamics, an agricultural approach which recognizes “the basic principles at work with nature and takes these principles to bring about balance and healing.”

Called Bios Dynamis-Health Food Center, the store is located at 3rd street , Phase 1, Ecoland Subd. Corner Quimpo Blvd. Their products include polished rice, fresh and flavored milk, yoghurt, tea granules (avocado, ginger, sambong and turmenic), wild honey, goat meat, mangosteen capsules and tea, salad dressings, herbs, antroposophic medicines, home-made soaps (fresh milk, wild honey, milk and honey, carrot, mulberry), among others.

Another store was also established in Kidapawan City.

Biodynamics is practiced all around the world and in this side of the country, Don Bosco is behind it. This practice is also known in Australia and US among others.

In North Cotabato alone, around 4,000 farmers are practicing Biodynamics, all of them enjoying good harvest while maintaining the soundness of the environment and delivering safe food products to the people.

The products of biodynamics are all enriched by the forces of nature like the sun and moon and the stars, including the elements of nature—air, water, fire, and earth.

Managing of the harmful pests are even done through the natural way—by spraying the field with milk and honey which will attract friendly pests. Weed eradication is gathering the species of unwanted weeds and process it, its ashes spread in the area and eventually the weeds will be free of the weeds.

The demand for chemical-free food products is already increasing today as it gains recognition from the international community. This as people have realized the importance of producing high-quality food products while keeping the integrity of the environment and health of the people.

The international market has also started to demand organically-produced bananas from banana-producing countries like the Philippines.

Kagwang is actually the Flying Lemur. Wild Cat is the bearcat or the Palawan Bearcat. But I don't think it can be found in Davao. But a bearcat is neither a bear or cat. Somebody from DENR could illucidate us on this.

City posts P1.8-B in new investments
By Carlo P. Mallo

AMONG the seven new investments in Davao City which have been given incentives by the Davao City Investment Promotion Center, AJMR Port Services Corp. posted the highest capital amounting to P1 billion.

In 2005, there were nine companies that were given incentives, the highest capital of which amounted to only P800 million.

The city posted P1.8 billion worth of new investments in 2006, representing seven companies that sought incentives from the center.

These companies were given a three-year exemption from payment of mayor’s permit fees and business sales taxes.

The companies were also given a two-year exemption from real property taxes excluding the barangay share.

The companies are also exempted from obtaining building permits.

Property development companies that were privileged to enjoy the incentives invested a total of more than P500 million while companies in the agri-business sector contributed a total of P300 million.

Year 2006 posted a 20 percent increase, representing P1.5 billion worth of new investments compared to 2005.

The criterion in the selectiom process for which companies would be given incentives includes a minimum of a million peso capital.

The companies must also be investing in one of the nine key areas -- agri-business sector; tourism and recreational facilities; transshipment facilities; miscellaneous light manufacturing; property development; establishment of foreign bank branches; telecommunications; environmental enhancement and protection facility; and medical, educational, training, and sport facilities.

Ledesma: Crime lost in the din of propaganda
By Jun Ledesma
Sunbursts

this is just and excerpt of the article..

BTW, there will be a big batch of Korean nationals expected to arrive in Davao City this February in addition to those who are already here.

They are not only trying to escape the harsh winter in their homeland but from what I gathered they will be here to spend their dollars on gulf courses but also on the casino. The casino I'm talking of is housed in Apo View Hotel. The main function rooms of the hotel have been totally reconfigured to accommodate the gaming tables. The Koreans are operating the casino. They must have very strong connections in the government to be able to establish a gambling joint right in the middle of church and school establishments. Is this the reason why the United Church of the Philippines (UCCP), which is just across the street of the gambling den, being demolished?

Or the UCCP building another edifice to shield the church and the churchgoers from the noise of cascading silver coins? Anyway, am sorry for UCCP. I can't blame our Korean visitors as they don't know how Pagcor farms out their franchise. I have some good Korean friends I met during the adventurous days of my youth. Welcome!

(The Koreans, specifically junketers, will have the gaming tables exclusive to themselves. Other foreigners and Filipinos are barred from playing in there. Even Koreans who are already playing at the casino in the Grand Regal Hotel are not allowed in. However, Apo View Hotel will still retain the slot machines housed in the former Penec Bar. This one, operated by Malaysian partners of Pagcor, is open to everyone. -The editors)

RP mulls Davao as venue of next Asean meet

The Philippine Star 01/29/2007

The Philippines is considering holding the 40th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Ministerial Meeting (AMM) and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) in Davao City to present Mindanao in a better light before the international community despite the undesirable travel advisories issued by foreign governments about Mindanao.

The United States, China, Japan, Russia, South Korea, Australia, European Union and North Korea will attend the ARF.

As the sitting ASEAN and ARF chair, the Philippines wants to use the opportunity presented by these regional fora to debunk the international community’s negative perception of Mindanao by hosting the ARF on Aug. 2.

Mindanao has regularly been cited in the travel advisories of various nations as one of the target areas for terrorist attack.

The government has also been engaged in war with Muslim secessionist and extremist groups there for over three decades, mostly in the archipelago of Sulu and Central Mindanao.

"Davao City is being considered by Malacańang. It’s the first choice as venue," a source said Saturday.

Sources said Davao City is acceptable to the US as venue of the meeting.

But the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is apprehensive of Malacańang’s plans because the city does not have a convention center and facilities for big international gatherings.

Sources also said Malacańang is eyeing the Pearl Farm resort as a venue of the AMM and ARF. — Pia Lee-Brago

Nagsugod na diha ang development dugay in anticipation sa DIA expansion. Mao yata na nagtukod diha ang Orange Grove Hotel. I did my banking and building materials shopping sa area and I didn't have to go downtown or Chinatown then.

Good day bro!

I don't have any clue that's how big the event is. But in my simple analysis, I came to conclude it's the same magnitude with ATF and Asean Summit on the grounds that participants are coming from all over the globe.

The good thing is- PGMA has again used her good judgement on Davao and she's all in high hopes Davao can pull it through again as glitchless as the ATF hosting. Unta madayon ni.

Apo and Camus St. I think boss Junax refers to the area along Mt. Apo that used to be littered with ISs.

Agree! Mindanao is a work in progress in terms of peace and order and Davao happens to be the de facto capital so that hosting it here is more fitting than anywhere else in the Phil if only to tell all and sundry that indeed we have achieved big inroads in attaining elusive peace. Davao marks 70th year on March 16
By Moses Billacura

DAVAO CITY—Davao City is preparing to mark its 70th anniversary on March 16, city officials said yesterday.

Acting City Administrator Melchor Quitain, co-chairman of the Araw ng Dabaw’s organizing committee, said various committees have already been formed to ensure the success of the celebration which will be led and mostly funded by the private sector.

Quitain said solicitations from the private sector will pass through a committee headed by Al Aboitiz, president and chief operating officer of the the Davao Light and Power Co. and his deputy Bobby Orig.

The city administrator said the celebration will be celebrated with a number of special activities, including the Mutya ng Dabaw 2007 beauty pageant.

The search for the Mutya ng Dabaw is open to all single females, 18 to 26 years old, at least 5’2’’ in height, at least a high school student, of good health and moral character, and a Filipino citizen born in Davao City and has resided continuously in the city for the last three years (or, if not born in Davao City, should have resided continuously in the city for the last five years).

The winner of the beauty pageant will take home P50,000; P30,000 for the first runner-up; P20,000 for the second runner-up; P15,000 for the third runner-up; and P10,000 for the fourth runner-up.

There will be a closed-door interview on Feb.23 and the pre-screening and selection of 15 semi-finalists on Feb. 26. The contestants will then compete for the top five slots on March 7 and will have their final selection and coronation night on March 15 at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Auditorium, Ian Ray Garcia said.

The necessary requirements must be submitted on or before 12 p.m. of Feb. 21 at the City Tourism Operations Office, said Garcia.

Davao, which originated from native words referring to the Davao River, was formally inaugurated by then President Manuel Luis Quezon on March 16, 1937.
The Spanish colonialists established the first Christian settlement at an area of mangrove swamps that is now known as Bolton Riverside. Private farm ownership grew and economic infrastructure were improved in the early 1900s when the Americans ruled the country as a colony.

In 1903, Japanese investors established extensive abaca plantations on the shores of Davao Gulf and developed the agricultural basis of the province’s economic prosperity. Almost 50 percent of the city’s total land area is classified as timberland or forest. Agriculture utilizes about 43 percent.

With a land area of 2,443.61 sq km, Davao City is one of the largest cities in the world and is divided into 184 villages and three congressional districts.

STI plans to list in RP, Singapore

BY IRMA ISIP

STI is planning to list its shares in the stock exchanges of both the Philippines and Singapore in the third quarter of the year to raise funds to finance its expansion, according to Eusebio H. Tanco, chairman of the executive committee of the STI.

Tanco said the company, which would be restructured as a holding company for its health, education and services subsidiaries, would offer 30 to 40 percent of its primary shares to the public in simultaneous initial public offering (IPO) in both the Philippine Stock Exchange and the Singapore Stock Exchange.

Based on its current market capitalization of $100 million, the 30 percent of the total number of shares to be floated would raise an estimated $30 million.

"It’s $30 million, it is not a big issue but it’s basically to find our expansion. Right now we are debt-free," Tanco said, adding that he is yet to decide whether or not STI would offer secondary shares.

The company is also yet to appoint a financial adviser to determine the amount of proceeds for the IPO.

"The market is ripe for an issue like STI which is into health, education and services. There are a number of listed companies in education but not the same as our model. The timing is also perfect coming as it is after the elections, he said.

STI groups Tanco’s various companies that include Delos Santos-STI Medical Center. The group also include businesses in animation, medical transcription, health desk, review centers, etc.

STI is now on its second year of its P1-billion expansion which are all being funded through equity.

Of this amount, P250 million has been spent for Tanco’s first foray into medical tourism through the De Los Santos-STI Mega Clinic, its first ambulatory clinic and the largest outpatient clinic located in a mall.

For this and other medical tourism facilities, Tanco plans to tap a portal to help drum up interest for overseas Filipinos in availing medical services in the Philippines.

The company is now negotiating for the acquisition of that portal which has access to some 200,000 Filipinos abroad.

Tanco said its medical tourism services would not be limited to healthcare but also the entire package — from airport pickup to hotel accommodation and even vacations.

Tanco said the Mega Clinic, located in SM Megamall, would set the benchmark for all ambulatory cliinics in the country, being the most modern and comprehensive services such as eye, dental, traditional Chinese medicine, cardiovascular, rehabiliation and sports and renal.

He said DLS-STI would build two more in Metro Manila, and one each in Cebu and Davao but noted that STI would prefer a location in a "mature mall" with a stable client base.

"This would be the SM of Healthcare, we would bring the clinics to the people as we bring down the cost of medical health," he said.

But Tanco said the Philippines still has a long way to go in medical tourism due to the very many restrictions in the coverage of health insurance for foreigners which make us less attractive than countries like Thailand and India.

This hindrance, he said, is a turnoff to patients despite the fact that the cost of having healthcare done here is just 20 percent of what it would cost in the United States or Europe.

Right now, he said, some health maintenance organizations (HMOs) are not accredited here so that patients have to have a rider HMO to pay for the range of health care services they want to avail of.

He said that the Philippines has to expand the accreditation of HMOs so it could attract more patients.

Teletech in Davao City
www.allheadlinenews.com
January 29, 2007

In a round table discussion Monday afternoon, Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila reported to the president that her visit to Davos was a very "fruitful and successful" mission because of the pledges and assurances from the businessmen to expand their investments in the Philippines.

"The Philippines 'stood tall' in front of the top businessmen of the world who recognized your administration's efforts to bring back the positive momentum of the economy," Favila told the president.

During the discussion, Favila said the international community, especially the top businessmen, acknowledged the growing economy of the Philippines under the Arroyo administration.

As a result of this, Favila revealed that Kenneth Tachman, CEO of Teletech, a leading business process outsourcing company in the world, announced his intention to expand their business in the Philippines.

He said that Teletech is planning to establish five new call centers in the country, with the capacity of 5,000 seats each.

DTI is eyeing Camarines Sur in Bicol, Valencia town in Negros Oriental, Dumaguete City and Davao as the new locations for Teletech's expansion program.

Favila said that Teletech is also planning to buy an island in the country to be developed as a tourist resort after learning that tourism is one of the biggest income earners of the Philippines.

Aside from call centers, Favila told the president that Prakash Hinduja, who owns big businesses in India and is one of the top 1,000 corporations in the world, also expressed his strong intention to expand his call center operations and establish a manufacturing company in the country.

Aside from call centers, Favila told the president that Prakash Hinduja, who owns big businesses in India and is one of the top 1,000 corporations in the world, also expressed his strong intention to expand his call center operations and establish a manufacturing company in the country.

yeheeeyy this is veeeery good news!  unta di masuhong... heheheh! call center aspirants in davao needn't leave home anymore.

^^ iamjhing andam na imong maleta kay hapit na ta manguli'g dabaw ^^
