I understand your frustration and I still remember the old adage that goes "Patience is a virtue". I'm not to canonize Digong here for all I care but I understand his philosophy. He is in for the big time, city progress-wise but all has to go through a process. How can we have tall buildings in our midst if most of the kids you see in Davao are emaciated-faced, with bellies that are bloated and can not enjoy the beaches and parks because they are all tagged at a lofty price. The future strength of the nation lies in the strong young generation of today I guess. He is I guess building a city made of solid foundation and not something where you can see through hollowness.

He is no perfect mayor and a perfect man has yet to be conceived. (I hope this is not blaphemous!) He has many things wanting in his governance too but what I admire about him is when he humbles himself when things are out of hand/of his control. He is not a "yes guy" and absolutely not "Mr. Nice Guy". He speaks his mind and stands his ground as a real man and that is a strong character other politicians (call them tradpol) are devoid of.

i believe duterte has done his best as a mayor of a well kept city that big. and i admired him. its not easy imo to maintain law and order of a place risen from its chaotic past. low turn out of investments should not be blamed on him singly. i believe the city has a very good long and short term economic programs. i guess its the failure of responsible people in their respective offices who are not performing well what is expected of thgeir output. people who dont deserve to work in his team should not stay to work with him. he should fire now!:D

Well said bro!

I think he chooses a good mix of people to help him run the city. I know even most of them and I believe they are there for the right reasons. Give them a good break and for sure they will deliver excellent jobs. I guess some of them already did, thank you!

Other departments have yet to show what they got and we all know which ones are these. They need a bit of inspiration I believe so or worse, a spanking from the boss himself.

;11651121']One of the least known Davao malls (in SSC) and the smallest (soon to be dethroned by Robinsons Place Davao as the smallest by 2008)

GAISANO SOUTH CITIMALL DAVAO (Formerly JS GAISANO CITIMALL)

This mall, though small at around 50,000sqm, has the best interiors of any department store in Davao (except for Chimes of course) and probably has the best interiors among among all Gaisano Department Stores in the Phil.

yung nga lang maliit lang talaga ang Mall niya (sa ground floor lang)

the layout is like this..

BASEMENT- Parking
GROUND FLOOR - Mall area and supermarket (best looking supermarket in DC IMHO, again second to chimes)
2nD FLOOR-4th FLOOR- Department Store (with a cafe sa 3rd floor)
5th FLOOR-Cinemas (4) ,Foodcourt,Entertainment Center, Restaurants and Cafes
6th FLOOR-Basketball Court (yep, you read it correctly..a basketball court..lols, its called SKYGYM if im not mistaken)

First travel show to hit Davao
By Josie San Pedro

KONKORDANS INC., a Destination Management Company, chaired by Ms. Baby Montemayor announced today that the first Travel Show to hit Davao City this year will be held on February 23-25, 2007 at the SM Entertainment Plaza. Dubbed as the Davao International Travel, Tours, Leisure and Lifestyle Exhibition, it is expected to bring in some 70 exhibitors to the city.

This includes international airline companies such as Lufthansa, Air France and KLM as well as luxury liners like Star Cruises and prime holiday resorts not only in the Philippines but also from Malaysia. The local government unit of Puerto Princesa and DOT Regional offices from the Northern, Visayan and Mindanao regions have also confirmed their participation. Also expected to attend are foreign guests form Kuching, Malaysia and Manado, Indonesia.

Tourism Secretary Ace Durano is expected to grace the event. As pointed out by the organizers, the exhibition is held in February since this is usually the time that vacationers firm up their plans for summer. Thus, for those who are planning that well-deserved vacation, this is the best time to scout for the most ideal destination for the summer at special rates.

Further, the public can avail of free consultations with travel agents, tour operators and hotel and resort sales representatives. Registration is for free. The travel show is endorsed by the Department of Tourism and supported by the Davao Travel Agencies Association, Davao Tour Operators, Davao Tourism Association, Davao Convention and Cooperative Bureau and the BIMP-EAGA Tourism Council.

The tourism leaders are optimistic that events such as this would continue to sustain whatever gains the city has achieved during the Asean Tourism Forum last year. The Travel Show is being organized by Global Link Marketing and Management Services in cooperation with KONKORDANS Inc. For more information, please contact the konkordans Inc. at 221-5674 loc 101 and 300-6730 or thru email address konkordans@gmail.com.

Making a Difference in the call Center Industry: Joji Ilagan Bian & JIB e-Academy
By H. O. Castillo

Joji Ilagan Bian is an epitome of a successful woman. Eloquent, confident, fashionable, intelligent, friendly, and with a sharp eye for market niches, she has always been brave to act on emerging business trends. The busy bee that she is keeps her traveling from Davao City to Korea, China, Indonesia, General Santos, Butuan, Tacurong, Marawi, and other places every now and then to bring people closer to their dreams.

One of her pet projects is the JIB e-Academy. The school trains potential call center agents and even assists them to get employed in Davao and Manila. As a partner of the Technical Skills and Development Authority (TESDA), JIB e-Academy helps students get relevant education for free through the scholarship coupons from the government called the PGMA Training for Work Scholarship Programs (PGMA TWSP).

“This is a form of assistance given to high school graduates and older people who do not have the financial resources to go to school and learn skills that would increase their chances of finding a job,” said Mrs. Bian. JIB e-Academy, TESDA, and other industry partners are working hard to narrow the gap between the mismatch of skills and industry demands.

“For instance, call centers nationwide need thousands of agents. Even here in Mindanao, the demand is growing by leaps and bounds… and we are doing our best to address this need. 2nd year college students who pass the TESDA or BPO (business process outsourcing) assessment test immediately receive scholarship coupons to undergo 100 hours of training in a school of their choice.

There are TESDA-accredited call center schools nationwide - including the JIB e-Academy. The e-Academy has branches in Davao, Butuan, General Santos, Marawi, Gingoog, Bukidnon, Iloilo, and soon in Libis, Eastwood,Quezon City,” she added. “I have personally witnessed the positive economic and social impact of this program that was conceptualized by TESDA Secretary Boboy Syjuco.

You see, our students are now gainfully employed here and in Manila and it’s not hard to see the favorable direction that we’re heading to. Good employment means higher purchasing power and lower crime rates which could ultimately lead to happier individuals and family units,” the JIB e-Academy president claimed. Those who are interested to avail themselves of the scholarship for call center training at JIB e-Academy may call 305-5522, 3053322, 0920-9510804, or email jib.eacademy@gmail.com.

^^ From his mother's side of the family. I am related to the Peraltas' (Don Mariano Peralta was the Spaniard who settled in the area after the Spanish-American War) but they basically control much of Davao del Sur's politics. From my experience, I found many words that are of Spanish origin that are not part of Cebuano usage. Most of the speakers are old folks or probably many are dead but they still exist. I have read before that the Japanese had Spanish or Chavacano translators to communicate before, since Tagalog or English was not the language of bussiness.

JAPANESE ROTARIANS VISIT ANEW RC SOUTH DAVAO

ROTARIANS from District 2660, Osaka, Japan, will be visiting RC South Davao on February 6, Tuesday, to meet President Wellking Ma and the other officers and members of Rotary club of South Davao. This will be the third visit of the Japanese Rotarians to Davao City. They will be here with their spouses for a 3-day stay. The Japanese Rotarians are back again to assist the exceptionally challenged children in this part of District 3860.

They first came to Davao City on May 23-25 2006, which was followed by another visit on July 11-13, some seven weeks later, when they entrusted to the local club their cash donations. District 2660, located in northern Osaka above the Yamato River, holds approximately 89 clubs and about 5,500 Rotarians. The first Rotary club in Japan, the Tokyo Rotary Club, was founded in 1920.

It now maintains 34 districts with over 124,000 Rotarians. Japan is the second largest Rotarian country after the United States. RC Osaka East, one of the oldest clubs in District 2660, is now headed by Rtn. Tsutomu Katayama. They hosted the 95th Rotary International World Convention held in Osaka, Japan, which then District Governor Evelyn Magno and Assistant Governor Leoncio Villa-Abrille had attended in 2004.

Rotarian Motozo Yoshikawa, club chair of the World Community Service (WCS) Committee, and Rtn Toyonari Morita, past president and club director on International Service, will be accompanied on this trip by their ladies, Lady Miyoko Yoshikawa and Lady Naomi Morita, respectively. WCS Chair Yoshikawa, now retired, has a Bachelor of Jurisprudence [Law] degree from the University of Tokyo, and earned his Master in Business Administration [MBA] at the Michigan State University as a Fullbright Scholar.

He was formerly general manager of the Gas Resources Dept. of the Osaka Gas Co. in 1990-1994. Later, he was promoted as Managing Director, then to Senior Managing Director before he became President of the same company. Chair Yoshikawa moved on to become the chairman of the Gas & Power Investment Inc. in 2003-2004. In the same year, he served as the advisor of Osaka Gas Co. for 6 years until he retired in June 2006.

During their Davao visit, WCS chair Yoshikawa & Lady Miyoko and International Service director Morita & Lady Naomi will be brought to three (3) project sites - where they will personally present its donation to the beneficiaries. Early Wednesday morning, they will go to Bahay Pasilungan in Bankerohan, a facility for street boys where past president Antonio Partoza, Jr. is chairman.

Then, at 9:30 AM the group will motor to Barangay Talomo, where the pre-schoolers and schoolchildren of the Mary Immaculate Learning Center are beneficiaries. According to Rotary Community Corps [RCC] Talomo Committee Chair Casilda Aparis, last year the learning center received from the Japanese funds to repair the school toilet and the building roof. Last destination at 10:30 AM will be the Orphanage of the Apostles for Jesus Crucified [Padre Pio Home for Children, Inc] in Tugbok District, where Past President & WCS Chair Antonio Diaz does his apostolate.

The orphanage is run by the Carmelite Sisters with young children as their wards. By noon, the Rotarians of Osaka East will motor back to Marco Polo Hotel to attend the Wednesday luncheon meeting of RC South Davao. During the meeting, WCS Chair Yoshikawa will be the guest of honor & speaker. PP Morita, the president of the Morita Bldg. Co., Ltd. in Osaka, will also speak for and in behalf of President Tsutomu Katayama, to extend a personal invitation to the local Rotarians to join their commemorative celebration of its Golden Anniversary on May 12 this year.

That's real politics in action there. If FVR had BIMP-EAGA, PGMA should have her own baby project too like Super Regions. Politicians delight in the fact that they can go down history by devicing something worth attaching to their name.

do you believe in super region program? how much trust can you give real intentions of government it will give equitable distribution of north south economic development? just asking:D

It's not a matter of me betting my few cents to it, I was only saying it's the style of politicians to mull a big ticket project of their own and get all the credits emanating from it before bowing out of politics. BIMP-EAGA is to FVR and Super Regions for PGMA.

@marjus1- i belive, they don't have any basis. i guess that's too obvious looking at the project allocation. Look, if you try to analyze that info, the bulk of the projects is still in Manila. as opposed to their intention, they are not actually decentralizing by creating these mega-regions. i believe that this "mega-region contruct" is a way of justifying the concentration of infrastructure in and around metro manila. at the end, we from the provinces (especially those far away from manila) are not going to get anything except empty promises - we have a large inventory of that  . so what else is new? :ohno:
agree with you. mindanao as agri hub in a super region program is is a deception to people of mindanao imo. this will justify investments allocations. bulk of foreign investment are non agri related so they go to regions that are already progressing. mindanao have to wait trickling kind of invenstments when it comes. job opportunities and economic activites will be concentratred in the north while mindadano has yet to wait. end result is economic development become faster up there while down mindanao will be waiting for it to happen. and so infrastructure should be developed up there to adjust to its needs. and that will be justified. what an agri hub got? potential investments in their sweet lips. thats all. wide socio economic disparity will stay. imo, for as long as economic and budgetary manipulations stay in the central governance, hopelessness will stay. go federal:D so back doors (so they say) can move on its own. why afraid. give it to economivally capable regions to stand as federal state for a start

Bay, patience is a virtue, but "ROLLING STONE GATHERS NO MOSS!" I mean, sa akong view, dili ta lantaon og moss kung nagamove ta. Let's not be passive; let's show to manila and cebu that we're a very good city!

Firstly, I don't have anything with Digong. He's good. He was running this city when I was still 2 years old. It worked that way for many years. It went well. But you know, change is inevitable.

Botohon nako si digong if and only if he allows investments to pour in, lax the city ordinances, make brilliant working laws, and lower the crime that way. that will make him more admirable. He may not be perfect, but let's not be myopic. May point naman si Valium months ago when pointing about the city's sluggishness, but let's not treat Digong with a personality cult/messiah imagery. If he'll do this, I'll eat my words.

As for now, wag muna Sara; be a councilor first before you run the whole city.

Mt. Apo Natural Park
Property names are listed in the language in wich they have been submitted by the State Party.
Philippines (Asia and the Pacific)

Date of Submission: 16/05/2006
Submission prepared by:
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) - Protected areas and Wildlife Bureau

State, Province or Region:
Davao City and Bansalan, Digos ans Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur in Region 11 and Makilala, Magpet and Kidapawan, North Cotabato in Region 12
Criteria: (iii)(vii)(ix)(x)
Ref.: 5022

Description

The Mt. Apo natural park include 629 species under 148 families of vascular and non-vascular plants. Five hundred seventy two species belong to 124 families of ferns and angiosperms, while 57 species belong to 24 families of bryophytes or mosses.

Among the vascular plants in the area, Moraceae, represented by the genus Ficus, has the highest number of known species. This particular group of plants is very important to the economy of the forest for they provide food to many species of birds and mammals. Most fruit-eating birds feed on Ficus fruits, particularly on the species bearing small reddish fruits which are quite abundant during summer.

Ficus and other small trees such as Leucosyke, Nauclea, Macaranga, Homolanthus, and Dillenia thrive in secondary forests at elevation of 300-500 m.a.s.l. such as in the Baratacab and Sibulan areas. Dipterocarp species like Dipterocarpus, Shorea and Pentacme dominate the vegetation at elevations of 650-1000 m.a.s.l. such as in Tibulo and Todaya. However, the dipterocarps assume shorter heights and become co-dominant with other smaller trees and shrubs such as Lithocarpus, Laportea and Areca at higher elevations of 1400 -1600 m.a.s.l. such as in Mainit-Kulan. At 1800-2000 m.a.s.l., particularly at Meran Baclayan, Agathis, Lithocarpus, Cinnamomum and gymnosperms are the dominant species. At the crater lake in Cirribal, Rhododendron, Vaccinium, Gleichenia and Polypodiaceae species were found to be most abundant along with bryophytes. Ferns and orchids are common as herbaceous component and as epiphytes.

Among the high value species of trees in the area are the almaciga or Agathis philippinensis and the dipterocarp species Shorea polita and Vatica mangachapoi. These tree species are threatened due to overlogging. The world famous Vanda sanderiana or waling-waling and the rattan species Plectocomia elmiri used to abound in the primary forests of Mt. Apo. However, these species can no longer be found in their natural habitats because of over collection.

Six endemic plant species are restricted to Mt. Apo. These were identified under the families (1) Lauraceae (Alseodaphne philippinensis); (2) Urticaceae (Cypholophus microphyllus) at an altitude of 1800 m.a.s.l.; (3) Fagaceae (Lithocarpus submonticulus) at 17000 m.a.s.l.; (4) Nepenthaceae (Nepenthes copelandii) in thickets at 2400 m.a.s.l. and (5) Piperaceae (Piperomia elmeri and P. apoanum) at 800-1200 m.a.s.l.

A total of 227 vertebrates species belonging to 69 families of amphibians, reptiles birds and mammals have been recorded in Mt. Apo. Likewise, 118 species of butterflies belonging to 69 families are recorded in the area.

Of the birds reported, most species are widely distributed and can be found throughout the Philippines such as the blue shortwing, Brachypteryx montana. The Philippine eagle, Pithecophaga jefferyi, the Philippine trogon, Harpactes ardens, and the yellow-bellied whistler, Pachycephala philippinensis, are species recorded in Luzon, Samar, Leyte and Eastern Mindanao. The fly-catchers, Eumyias panayensis, and Ficedula westermanni are reported in Luzon, Mindoro, Negros, Panay and Mindanao. F. westermanni can also be found in Palawan. The strong-billed shrike, Lanius validirostis, can be observed in the highlands of Mindoro, Luzon, and Mindanao, while the Philippine bullfinch, Pyrrhula leucogenys, occurs in the highlands of Luzon and Mindanao only. The presence of L. woodi, R. goodfellowi, E. payanensis, F. hyperythra, R. nigrocinnamomea and H. cinnamomeus were also noted in the primary forest area.

The Mt. Apo myna Basilornis miranda, the Apo lorikeet Tricoglossus johnstoniae, the cinnamon bird Hypocryptadus cinnamoneus, and the bagobo babbler, Leonardina woodi, and the black and cinnamon fantail are among the Mindanao endemics in MANP. These species are believed to have evolved on Mt. Apo before spreading to surrounding peaks such as in Katanglad, Malindang, and Matutum.

The Philippine eagle, P. jefferyi, is by far the most important bird species in Mt. Apo This bird is not found elsewhere in the world and has become the symbol of Philippine conservation efforts. Widespread destruction of its habitat and over collection is driving this species to extinction.

Mammalian species include shrews and gymnures, bats, rats, squirrels, ungulates, civet cats and deers. The families Pteropidae and Muridae are the most represented. The pteropid bats are common in Mt. Apo, particularly Cynopterus brachyotis, Haplonycteris fischeri and Rousettus amplexicaudatus. Of the mammals identified, only four are Mindanao endemics. These are Apomys insignis, Urogale everetti, Sundasciurus philippinensis and Podogymnura truei. The Philippine gymnure, P. truei, which belongs to family Erinacidae, was believed as restricted to Mt. Apo until it was collected in Mt. Kitanglad. The deer species, Cervus mariannus apoensis is the most threatened mammal in the area.

Important reptile species occurring in Mt. Apo include the burrowing skinks of the Genus Brachymeles and the Cuming's eared skink, Otosaurus cumingi. The latter is rare and the largest in its family. The monitor lizard, Varanus salvator, is one of the species used as food.

Important amphibian species include the Philippine woodland frog, Rana magna, the broad hearted forest frog, Leptobrachium hasselti, the horned forest frog, Megophrys monticola, the Mueller's toad, Ansonia muelleri, the Mindanao toad, Pelophryne brevipes, the montane narrow-mouthed frog, Oreophryne annulatus. R. magna is considered an endangered species throughout the country because it is widely collected for food. Moreover, rate of population increase of the species is slow for it requires unpolluted cool water for successful breeding. It also has a relatively long tadpole stage making it vulnerable to changes in the forest environment. L. hasselti is considered a true forest frog because it cannot survive in open areas. This species is considered rare because of its cryptic, or secretive behavior, similar to M. monticola.

http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/3448/3625018667c5ccce992ii8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The butterflies in the area are numerous in terms of number of species. They occur in a wide range of habitat, from cultivated lands to grasslands, from second growth to primary forest. Among the species commonly found are Eurema hecabe, Graphium sarpedon, Papilio rumnzovia, P. aquamemnon and Mycalesis tagala sermirasa. Five endemic species of butterflies are known. These are: (1) Parantica schoenigi, (2) Delias lecicki, (3) D. schoenigi, (4) D. apoensis, and (5) D. woodi. Of the five, D. woodi and D. schoenigi have wider vertical distribution range. They were observed between approximately 800 and 2400 m.a.s.l. All species are usually found close to bodies of water.

Justification for Outstanding Universal Value
Satements of authenticity and/or integrity:

Mt. Apo, located in Mindanao, is one of the 14 bio-geographic zones of the Philippines

Apo Reef was proclaimed as Protected Area under the category of Natural Park and its surrounding waters as buffer zone by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 868, dated September 6, 1996. The Apo Reef Natural Park (ARNP) and its peripheral Buffer Zone covers an area of 15,792 hectares and 11,677 hectares, respectively, totaling 27,469 hectares in all. Prior to its declaration as a Protected Area under the category of Natural Park, Apo Reef has been designated as Marine Park through Presidential Proclamation No. 1801 in 1980, authorizing the Philippine Tourism Authority PTA to undertake the development and Management of the area. It was also declared a tourist Zone and Marine Reserve by virtue of Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro Sangguaniang Bayan Resolution No. 1108 in 1983. In the quest for a more comprehensive program in protected area management the concept of an Integrated Protected Areas System (IPAS) was developed in 1989 by the Haribon Foundation, a non-governmental organization (NCO), through a grant by the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF)-US. By 1990, IPAS Phase I, an 18-month study was undertaken. Its major achievements included the enactment of Republic Act 7586 establishing the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) in 1992 and its implementing rules and regulations, and the tentative listing of IP sites all over the country and the identification of ten (10) priority sites including the IPAS Reef Natural Park. The second phase of IPAS is generally known as the implementation stage. The Conservation of Priority Protected Areas Project (CPPAP), which is being funded by the Global Environmental Facility (CEF) forms part of this phase. Implementation of this project in a ten 10 - pilot sites identified during IPAS Phase I, is currently being jointly undertaken by the Government of the Philippines (COP), through the Department of Environment and Natural Resources DENR and a consortium of local and national development and environment- oriented NGO's, the NGO's for Integrated Protected Areas (NIPA), Inc.

Grounded on the framework set by the NIPAS Act, active participation of local communities and other non-traditional PA Management actors is a crucial element in the project's implementation. The vehicle for this is the DENR, LGU's and the civil society e.g. PO:, ICCs, and NGOs). The CPPAP is an attempt to contextualize the new strategy of protected area management which addresses the various social, cultural, political and economic values that influence protected area management of the Philippines. The NIPAS law espouses the twin objectives of biodiversity management and sustainable development. The law gives cognizance to the urgent need to sustainable manage the finite resources of a protected area, in order to achieve the holistic development of local communities.

Comparison with other similar properties:

Mt. Apo is considered the center of endemism in Mindanao. It has one of the highest land-based biological diversity in terms of flora and fauna per unit area. It has three (3) distinct forest formations from lowland tropical rainforest to mid-mountain forests and finally to high mountain forests.

I've seen metro manila before. We stayed there for about 2 weeks. Sure I may not have seen it, and we may not have cleaned the whole Davao of whole beggars yet, but the overpass issue that I talked before is really one of the weirdest ideas yet.

Critical points that should be overpassed are:

1 - Buhangin areas
2 - Mintal.Ulas.Toril Junction
3 - Matina (done)

the skyway program is better imho.

S. Mindanao completes P1B projects in 2006

THE Department of Public Works and Highways in Southern Mindanao has completed a little more than P1 billion worth of projects for 2006.

While another P6 billion worth of projects are to be completed this year.

In its annual report, DPWH-Southern Mindanao reported to have implemented the improvement or construction of P1.037 billion worth of projects in the region that include national roads and bridges, local roads, farm-to-market roads, flood control projects, water supply projects, classrooms and toilets and other infrastructure projects.

In 2006, it has implemented 12 foreign-assisted projects worth P3.074 billion of which four were already completed. They reported an accomplishment rate of 76.921 percent for the 12 projects.

Under the locally funded projects from both the current and carry-over projects for 2004 and 2005, DPWH Southern Mindanao programmed 2,624 projects which amounted to P3.22 billion of which 2,476 were already completed, 116 ongoing and 32 yet to be started. For this, it reported a 90.57 percent accomplishment rate.

Aside from implementing infrastructure projects, DPWH also launched its Roadside Maintenance Job Creation Program that aims to generate jobs for poor and out-of-school youth in the project sites.

Last year, they have reportedly hired 413 laborers region-wide.

In their billboard campaign, the regional office has reported 94.66% completion rate with 1,334 out of the 1,528 identified billboards and signage demolished or strengthened. One hundred ninety-four more billboards are set for demolition soon.

I really hope that these projects will be materialized within the year or so. Sayang, in the real estate industry, they got this what they call as the 7 year cycle. The Philippines right now is in the boom when it comes to real estate development. Condos development here and there. It may sound as a myth but a lot of developers follow the same trend. Hmmmm…ang hirap i-explain but here’s an overview:

1982 -1983 – Ang daming bad events...Ninoy also died.

1982- 1989 – 7 year na down ang real estate sa pinas. May mga skyscrapers na naconstruct pero iilan lang

1990 to 1997 – panahon ni Ramos, real estate was booming. In fact eto yung years where Pryrce, Landco, and Marco Polo were constructed in Davao. Marami ring projects sa Cebu and Manila.

1997- start ng financial crisis.

1997- 2004 – they call this stage as the recuperation year ng real estate and construction industry.

2004 – start ng boom ulit..in fact, in Manila and Cebu – major developments started this year.

2004- 2011 – they say that this is the next 7 year boom of the real estate and construction industry.

It may seem like a myth…..but I hope this time, Davao will be able to ride the boom.

MT training provider accepts new trainees

JAVLON Consulting Inc. (JCI), a Tesda-registered medical transcription-training provider, is now opening a new class for the new batch of trainees this month.

JCI provides Medical Transcription Finishing Course that caters to students with medical and non-medical backgrounds.

The program is designed for individual who have a background in medicine, biology, nursing, medical technology and other similar fields.

The program is also customized for those who are from other disciplines outside medicine like in the arts, humanities, and commerce. Its program curriculum abides with international standards set by the American Association of Medical Transcription (AAMT).

Graduates of Javlon shall be recommended and endorsed to MT service providers in Davao City.

Employment of medical transcriptionists is projected to grow faster than average for all occupations through 2014.

A growing and aging population will spur demand for medical transcription services.

MT is the third largest and one of the fastest growing, workforce absorption in the ICT industry, out of its 10 services. It is expected to generate 10,000 jobs in 2006 and 17,000 in 2007.

This figure shows the expected growth demand for medical transcription in the future.

However, unlike call center agents, medical transcriptionists need a specific set of skills required for all aspects of its work. As such, a full course program is required for all MT aspirants to undergo and pass.

In Davao City, there are at least five medical transcription companies with small-scale but very promising operations.

China’s 2nd richest man eyes tourism investments in RP
By Marianne V. Go
The Philippine Star 02/08/2007

China’s second richest man, taipan Hui Wing Mau, has expressed interest in investing in the Philippines, primarily in the tourism sector.

Upon the invitation of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Inc. (FFCCCI) led by its president Francis Chua and special envoy for trade and investment to China Ambassador Carlos Chan, Hui — along with other members of the Shanghai Overseas Chinese Chamber of Commerce — is in the country to look at possible investment opportunities.

Hui, ranked by Forbes magazine as China’s second richest man, is the chairman of the Shimao Group which also controls the Le Meridien hotel chain.

In a very low-key visit, Hui paid a courtesy call to President Arroyo during which he expressed interest in acquiring an island to put up a resort for Chinese tourist.

Among the areas Hui and the Shimao/Le Meridien chain have shown interest in are Panglao Island in Bohol province, Panay Island across from Boracay, Samal Island and Palawan.

Philippine commercial attache to China Jorge Mendoza Judan, who is accompanying the Shanghai business delegation, said the visiting Chinese businessmen are also looking at possible infrastructure investments such as an international airport for Panglao which can accommodate much bigger planes that would bring in Chinese tourists.

Judan said the Shimao Group, which has at least $10 billion in investments in various high-end residential and commercial properties in Australia, Southeast Asia, Russia and China, is interested in doing some landbanking in the Philippines in anticipation of a Chinese tourism boom due to the proximity of the country to China.

The Philippines, Judan said, is the first ASEAN country that the Shimao Group is looking at with keen interest.

Judan estimates that the Shimao Group could easily bring in up to $1 billion in potential investments. Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap and Trade Industry Secretary Peter B. Favila, and other government officials briefed Hui and the visiting members of the Shanghai business delegation on various other investment opportunities in the mining, agriculture, information and communications sector.

Yap told The STAR that he has asked Hui’s help in linking up with other Chinese investors who may be interested in various agri-business joint ventures and in biofuel production.

Yap also offered Laoag International Airport as a possible investment opportunity, noting that Chinese tourists appear to favor the Ilocos province as a destination to the extent that the Chinese government has decided to put up a consulate in Laoag.

RP to export pork to Singapore
By Marianne V. Go
The Philippine Star 02/08/2007

The Philippines will be ready to start exporting pork products to Singapore by July this year, according to Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said yesterday.

In an interview with The STAR, Yap said two Mindanao-based meat processors Matutom Packaging and Nenita’s have shown that they are capable of exporting pork products and they can start by June or July this year.

Singapore is beginning to source some of its pork requirements from the Philippines because of the country’s FMD (foot and mouth disease)- free status.

Malaysia, which is Singapore’s primary source of pork products, is reportedly experiencing some FMD contamination, Agriculture Assistant Secretary Salvador Salacup said.

Only pork products from Mindanao so far are ready to be exported.

The Philippines is still awaiting further clearance from the Office Internationale de Epizooties (OIE) declaring all other parts of the country as free from FMD contamination, Salacup added.

Once the OIE clearance is given, Salacup said, the country would be able to increase its pork exports to Singapore.

Yap had previously said that Mindanao could be the country’s hub for pork and halal exports. According to Yap, Mindanao’s comparative advantages as a top animal feed producer and ideal site for breeder farms and processing facilities would make it an ideal export hub for pork and processed meat products.

Furthermore, Mindanao is a major producer of corn, which is a vital animal feed. It is FMD-free and has several breeder farms and meat processing facilities.

Yap noted that the hog industry grew 3.9 percent in 2006, grossing P126.5 billion representing 14.3 percent of total agricultural production.

The hog industry is the country’s second major industry behind palay which grew 18.3 percent percent and grossed P162.5 billion in the same year.

Local growers exported $650,000 worth of processed meat products from January to September 2006 to Micronesia, United Arab Emirates, Marshall Islands, United States, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Pacific Trust territories, Canada, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Italy.

To help keep commercially grown animals disease-free, Yap said, the National FMD Task Force is implementing "progressive zoning" with the help of local government units (LGUs), commercial farms and slaughterhouses.

"We continuously encourage LGUs to take a direct hand in implementing FMD-monitoring and preventive measures," Yap said.

Davao Ebiz - The first and only in the Philippines.

Davao City — Board of Investments (BOI) Davao City head Engr Gil Dureza said E-Biz, the only one in the Philippines conceptualized to pump prime investments in Mindanao, is serving the information needs of industries such as those on vegetable, palm oil, carageenan, castor oil, and banana.

Client industries include Nakashim, a Japanese run processing plant for fruits and vegetables; Agumill with Malaysian palm oil investors; Martson with Filipino seaweed entrepreneurs; the New Davao Castor Oil also with Filipino investors for castor oil; and local businessmen for banana chips companies.

Dureza said there are requirements for sources of raw products among the named investors.

In the case of Nakashim, the firm will require 13,000 hectares to maintain a steady supply for vegetables and fruits.

Agumill will need some 6,000 hectares for palm oil and Martson, some 500 hectares for growing seaweeds. The New Davao Castor Oil will need another 600 hectares for growing Tangantangan and about 6,000 hecraising cardava bananas.

Dureza said investors could access the services of E-Biz that include business matching and a one-stop for processing of business requirements and other related concerns.

Representative from the Bureau of Internal Revenue, Social Security System and PhilHealth are joining the E-Biz.

Mt. Hamiguitan "The Enchanted Mountain"

Mt. Hamguitan / Bonsai Fields
Truly one of Mother Nature's gifts to the Filipino people, the Bonsai fields pf Mt. Hamguitan, which is situated no less than 5,345 feet above sea level, consists of more than 1,000 hectares of forest life filled with wild and exciting flora and fauna. As the name suggests, Bonsai trees span most of the given area. These century-old trees stand 2-3 feet tall, with the tallest reaching only 5 feet in height, and are so sturdy that one can literally carry the weight of a man on its branches. It is like finding oneself suddenly in a veritable enchanted garden right in the middle of the jungle. Also located at Barangay La Union, this wonder has already been featured in Magandang Gabi Bayan for its uniqueness and mystical quality. The area is also a sanctuary of rare and exotic birds and animals, including the world famous Philippine Eagle. Because of its beauty and charm, the mountain has become a favorite camping sit

Feeling like Gulliver
at the 'pygmy forest'
By Nenette Bundalian

STORIES about the ''pygmy forest'' of San Isidro in Davao Oriental have ranged from the extraordinary to the very impressive to the simply outrageous.

Sometime in June and July, I was supposed to visit the place which is a member-municipality of the Provincial Agro-Industrial Corridor (Paic) Magbalusta (Mati, Banay-Banay, Lupon, San Isidro and Tarragona) in Davao Oriental.

The Local Government Support Program (LGSP) was supposed to help launch it as an alternative tourism destination in Mindanao, together with three other Paics in Southern Mindanao.

Since the highlight of any trip to San Isidro was a visit to this forest, I was dissuaded from going. The trek, according to some, is arduous, to say the least. The place is very far with journey time ranging from three to 10 days. The trail is leech-infested, etc., etc.

But upon the instigation of San Isidro Mayor Justina M.B. Yu, who already recognizes her municipality's potential for community-based tourism, the LGSP was requested to assist in the preparation of their tourism master plan and the eventual launching of these tourism potentials.

So in October, off we went.

http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/3206/apr30175pg1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/3359/hamigitan01sa5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Mt. Hamiguitan

On the third day, we were off to Mt. Hamiguitan, the site of the ''pygmy forest.''

In Barangay Tumaliti, where the trek begins, more outrageous stories would send us off--the dwarf monkeys which enter one's ears if one's not careful, and other tall tales meant to dissuade the faint-hearted.

Despite the ''horror'' stories, we embarked on our trip at noon. The first half was not ''arduous'' and we did not need a rescue chopper. It afforded us a view of second growth and residual forest cover left behind by loggers. With its abandoned roads, a weed-covered bulldozer and a maze of steel cables, logging made a mark on the mountainous landscape.

The five-hour walk would have been shorter had it not been for the driving rain that made us feel like toddlers playing. The first campsite, Kapatagan Uno, was reached at 5:30 p.m. where we pitched tent and prepared dinner. After eating and laughing our throats hoarse, the non-stop rain made us crawl inside the comforts of our tents.

At 7 a.m. the next day, we continued our trek. Knowing better now that the trail would not be as tricky as purported to be, we took our time appreciating the flora and fauna.

Nature's way

Mini-waterfalls adorn the way, while small snakes, butterflies deep in conversation, frogs in camouflage, mossy 45-degree climbs, and others made the walk very rewarding--the first time I ever touched a tree wrapped in gel-like moss.

Despite the delay from gawking, we arrived at the second campsite, Kapatagan Dos, just in time for lunch. Being already at the foot of the ''pygmy forest,'' we took time to eat and had siesta waiting for the sun's heat to wane a little since there would be no shade under the trees only two feet tall.

At 2:30 p.m., we started going up to the forest. Standing in the middle of the 400-plus hectare bonsai field, one feels like Gulliver.

Narra, almaciga, pine and other varieties of trees that dwarfed us on our way up are small yet strong enough to sit on.

Underneath the canopy of trees, it looked much like looking up in an ordinary thicket, except that passersby would appear like giants about to trample you.

Pitcher plants, which looked like giant condoms, are miniature replicas seeming to have adjusted their size to avoid insulting the majestic tree species.

Because of the rocky soil, the trees grew stunted. But the weeds grow to normal size, often dwarfing the gnarled trees on which they grow on.

At 3:30 p.m., we had to hurry back to the campsite since the fog could easily cover the whole bonsai field in minutes, putting us in danger of losing our way.

Sure enough, the minute we turned our backs, the fog was rapidly descending and enveloping the enchanted forest of the dwarfs.

After sleeping in for another night, we trekked down the mountain. Just as exciting as the climb up, the forest never tired of entertaining us through the myriad activities of nature.

Most exciting was the rushing wind between two mountains, like huge sea waves breaking toward shore, and the whining cicadas like chainsaws cutting trees.

No, the small monkeys are just tales, the ''trickiness'' of the trail was just meant to impress those who have not been there, and the 10-day walk was simply a manifestation of fear of not having been there themselves.

What is true is that it is a challenging trek that affords one the pleasure of communing with nature in a place rarely reached.

What is truest of all is that there exists a vast expanse of land where anybody could play Gulliver in one of his travels and look down at a forest untouched by the greed of man.

Fun events at Damosa Gateway
By Ian Ray C. Garcia

Last weekend, Market Basket, the soon-to-be premier shopping and dining destination in the metro’s north zone, opened the Damosa Carnival, an initial bite of the many scrumptious feasts it has primed for its grand opening next month. The carnival, a fun come-on for families to sample the wholesome amusement that the entire dining and recreation enclave of Damosa Gateway promises to be, features carnival rides, fun games, and lovable mascots, clowns and cartoon characters.

It also showcases bazaars and variety shows. The grand launch was attended by no less than the SVP of Damosa Land, Inc. Mr. Ricky Floirendo, along with his company’s senior manger Atty. Nicolas Banga, barangay captain Pio Villagonzalo, and guest speaker Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang. Councilor Dayanghirang hailed the developments in the area as a positive indication of advancement in the city’s second district.

He also said that Damosa Gateway opened a lot of opportunities for development and initiated in the increase of commercial establishments in the area. The grand launch showcased the dancing prowess of the Crossovers Dancers, the festive presentation of the Matina Central Elementary School Drum and Bugle Corps, and the amusing clowns of Bonjee Entertainment. Market Basket, a combination of wet market, mall and restaurant strip, guarantees to meet the shopping and dining needs of the residents of the northern side of the city without having to go through the hassle of driving downtown for their daily provisions.

Conveniently located in the burgeoning Damosa Gateway, home to a number of restaurants, service establishments, school, call center and the soon-to-open Microtel Davao, truly offers the much-needed convenience in a clean, safe and organized setting. On February 18, Market Basket will have its soft opening with some of its tenants ready to serve the public. They will also have a Chinese New Year celebration on the same day with a variety of activities. For the gimik crowd, popular bands perform live at Damosa Gateway on Fridays. The Damosa Carnival is open to the public from Sundays to Thursday, 5:00-11:0 PM, and from Fridays to Saturdays, 5:00 PM - 12:00 MN.

Save the Philippine Eagle
ROSES & THORNS By Alejandro R. Roces
The Philippine Star 02/08/2007

http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/742/5043807603eaglemodpm4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The majestic Philippine Eagle is one of the rarest, largest and most powerful birds in the world. This bird of prey, or raptor, belongs to the family Accipitridae and is known in the scientific community as Pithecophaga jefferyi, after Jeffery Whitehead, father of the English explorer and naturalist John Whitehead, who collected the first specimen. Also known locally as Haribon or Haring Ibon (King Bird), this bird was first called the Monkey-Eating Eagle when it was discovered in 1896, based on reports from natives saying that it preyed only on monkeys (hence its generic name, from the Greek word pithecus ("ape or monkey") and phagus ("eater (of)"). However, studies later revealed that this bird also preys on other animals such as civets, large snakes, monitor lizards and even large birds like hornbills. Because of this and the fact that the same name applied to the African Crowned Hawk-eagle and the South American Harpy Eagle, a presidential proclamation was passed to change its name to Philippine Eagle.

This eagle’s head is adorned with long brown feathers that give it the appearance of a lion’s mane. Its upperside is colored brown while the underside is white. The average size of the female is about 1 meter (3.3 feet) long, weighs about 7 kilograms (15.5 lbs.) and has a wingspan of 2 meters (6.7 feet). This makes the Philippine Eagle one of the world’s tallest eagles and has the largest surface area in its wings among all the species of eagles. Like most other eagles, the Philippine Eagle is monogamous. The couple remains together for a lifetime. Its nest is normally built about 30 meters above the ground. The female lays only one egg. The parents will care for the egg and the young for 20 months, so they may breed only every other year.

Over the years, the Philippine Eagle has steadily dwindled in numbers. Despite the presence of laws protecting the bird, the eagles are still hunted down. Our forests are continually being rampantly exploited, leading to the loss of nesting places for the eagle. It was in 1965 when Dr. Dioscoro Rabor, a renowned Filipino scientist, first alerted the world of the bird’s endangered status. Realizing the disastrous effects that the eagle’s diminishing numbers can have on the environment, Dr. Rabor elicited the support of the famous aviator, Charles A. Lindbergh, who helped champion the cause. Thus, in 1969, the Monkey-Eating Eagle Conservation Program was established. In 1987, the program started operating as a private institution and became the Philippine Eagle Foundation. Through the years, the foundation’s entire staff persevered and did not allow hindrances to stop them from achieving their mission of saving the magnificent bird from extinction. In 1992, all the dedication and hard work paid off when the foundation successfully produced the first two Philippine Eagles hatched and bred in captivity. The birth of Pag-asa (Hope) and Pagkakaisa (Unity) caught the world’s attention, eventually leading to the outpouring of public support and sympathy. Just last November 23, a new eaglet was hatched. This is the 21st eaglet hatched at the Philippine Eagle Center.

The foundation’s admirable work has yielded other welcome surprises. Its field research team has discovered a new species of rodent and possibly new species of bat and frogs in the course of its biodiversity archiving projects in Eastern Mindanao. Several thousand hectares of our country’s forests have been protected because of the foundation’s projects in this area. This kind of program, however, requires abundant resources. Already, the Philippine Eagle Center is fast running out of breeding space to house the endangered birds brought about by the success of the breeding program. James Marsh Thomson, former head of the American Peace Corps in the Philippines and a staunch advocate for the conservation of the Philippine Eagle, is appealing for any kind of support that will help the Philippine Eagle Foundation sustain its noteworthy program. Your help, no matter how big or small, will go a long way in supporting actions that can save the Philippine Eagle and all the other wildlife which shares its habitat with the species.

For donations and other kinds of inquiries, you can contact the Philippine Eagle Foundation at 8152892. Through the Philippine Eagle Foundation’s work, the Philippine Eagle has endured. But all their perseverance and hard work will be for naught if they cannot continue their program.

While riding a ferry boat across the Gulf of Davao, I got out of the car and shot this photo of the Island City Express bus, which was also going to Samal Island. Island City Express bus line is owned by the same people who own the ferry that we are riding on, so the buses always get priority when loading the ferry. You can ride from Agdao, Davao City to Penaplata, Samal for just P10, including the ferry. Not bad! The buses are usually pretty loaded, though. I doubt there is much room inside!

Timoys just fits Dabawenyo taste
By Nelson C. Bagaforo

THEIR "passion for eating" prompted them to open this restaurant on Quirino Avenue and named the place after a word they coined over bottles of beer -- Timoys, meaning "men."

As it suggests, the place, which has native-inspired setting, reflective of Dabawenyo taste, is owned by group of young male entrepreneurs whose friendship started way back when they were in high school.

But it doesn't mean the place only caters to men, in fact it's not a watering hole, but more of a dining place that aims to serve Dabawenyos -- from all walks of life -- with a wide array of quality food at affordable prices.

Timoys offers the best mix of native Filipino and Chinese cuisines -- each with an elaborate presentation to tease the senses.

The establishment prices their offerings very reasonably, so much so that even an average working class joe can come in and not have to spend a week's earnings on a great meal.

Their menu is more or less oriented towards family dining, with dishes designed for both adults and children.

According to E-Y Liao, one of the owners and operations manager of Timoys, they always see to it that their food "not only tastes good but also looks appetizing."

He said some entrees in their menu are actually taken from various restaurants they have been to. "We do include in the menu those that we think fit Dabawenyos taste. But these were modified. We put it in some enhancement," Liao said

At Timoys, the crispy tadyang ng baka and crispy pata (their topsellers) that we all know and love come with a sauce specially prepared by their chef. The sauce has been modified to suit the Dabawenyos' discriminating tastes.

True to its name, the crispy tadyang ng baka and crispy pata are indeed crispy on the outside, tender and juicy in the inside.

Another local favorite is the kare-kareng buntot ng baka, stewed in rich peanut butter sauce, native vegetables and served with bagoong alamang.

Patrons looking for something out of the ordinary should definitely try out Timoys' grilled whole chicken served with a sauce that fits Dabawenyo taste.

Timoys also offers fresh seafoods. You can choose from their fresh fishes -- like pompano, lapu-lapu, tuna belly, buntot and panga -- and crabs and let their chef cook it the way you want.

^^ i have a comment regarding sa post sa prev thread about Mayor Duterte.

I somehow agree with some who said na dapat magfocus din sa economic development. However, i think we should'nt blame him if the local government lacks any effort when it comes to city promotions. I think this is not a one man show. There are certain chambers and departments created to promote Davao. I do hope that these men and women assigned on those posts will also aggressively do their part.

Davao's development is of everybody's concern and not of Mayor alone.

Maybe he is not that futuristic when it comes to his visions. But this should not stop the Davao City Investment and Promotions Center or the Davao Tourism Office in promoting Davao to the globe. Cguro the only problem is that some of us became to dependent kay mayor!

wow....this is such a great news! its a great tool as well when it comes to city promotions.

However, with this kind of event - the travel agencies and operators are the true winners. Not that i have something against that! mas ok nga eh! Rich dabawenyos and visitors will surely enjoy the travel promos and products which will be offered during the expo in Davao.

But i hope our DATO can do something which is out of the box. Can we do something that would benefit Davao City as a whole? I hope we can do caravans or exhibits outside of Davao. Let's say, DATO will fly to Kuala Lumpur and will hold an exhibit in KLCC Mall which is all about Davao City. Or go to Singapore and have a month long Davao Festival showcasing Davao's destinations and marketing this directly to them.

I believe that we can promote Davao more...when we are outside of the city - where our target market is.

I believe they are on their toes with this project knowing the magnitude of it's impact to the global tourism market. It's probably the newspaper's lack of interest to it as to the reason why we didn't hear so much about it- well, it's no contest newspapers are more adept at dishing out news about war and all sorts of chaos in the country including the trivial killings in the neighborhood. So pathetic journalism.:ohno:

I believe they are on their toes with this project knowing the magnitude of it's impact to the global tourism market. It's probably the newspaper's lack of interest to it as to the reason why we didn't hear so much about it- well, it's no contest newspapers are more adept at dishing out news about war and all sorts of chaos in the country including the trivial killings in the neighborhood. So pathetic journalism.:ohno:

im sorry but it looks to me they too are accomplice to destruction of moral fiber and pride of filippinos. lookslike their version of professional journalism appeared disgracefully no finesse that made philippines a big joke outside. i know they recieved accolades internationally, but only as good as recognition on paper, but if comparing news bureau and gathering and reporting among asian and other countries, philippines news channel are the least appealing to subscribe. i have no journalistic background but i can smell which croud is unrully

Agree! Sensational journalism ticks in third world countries like the Philippines so much so that people outside of it are wondering how come we Filipinos are still stuck in the mud. I hope we can knock some sense into the heads of these communications moguls and get off the beaten track (sacrifice, sacrifice that's it!) if only to purvey good image to the picky market around the globe.

Paul Williams, Dennis Lambert in a Pre-Valentine show at Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Convention Hall

A spectacular festival of some of the biggest pop hits of the 20th century as performed live by their own creators awaits thousands of music fans when acclaimed composers and songwriters Paul Williams and Dennis Lambert come to Davao for a major Pre-Valentine concert on Feb. 11, at pm., at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Convention Hall Davao City.

Billed as “The Great American Songwriters Series,” the Valentine musicfest to be mounted by Sangguniang Kabataan Federation will cap a five-city Philippine tour by the two celebrated songwriters, their first-ever concert tour together and which will kick off on Feb. 10 at Cebu Waterfront Hotel, Cebu City. Other performances are slated on Feb. 12, Limketkai Center Atrium, Cagayan de Oro City; and Feb. 13, Rose Auditorium-Central Philippines University, Iloilo City.

Tickets for the Davao Concert are available at S.M. Department Store, Gaisano Mall of Davao, All Music Zone outlets. The Venue, Holiday Spa, Penhaus (Victoria Plaza), Bo’s Coffee at F. Torres St., Mcdale Events Management and Nanay Bebeng Restaurant. Ticket Prices are P 2,500, P 2,000, P 1,200 and P 800 (P800 tickets are only available at all Music Zone Outlets, The Venue, Holiday Spa and Penhaus.

Paul Williams is recognized as one of America’s most prolific and gifted songwriters and composers who is responsible for a number of enduring pop hits from the 70s, including “(Just An) Old-Fashioned Love Song,” a US-Top Ten hit for the band Three Dog Night in late 1971; and a number of The Carpenters’ hits, most notably “We’ve Only Just Begun,” which has since become a cover-band standard. An Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe Awards winner, he is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and a recipient of the 2004 National Music Publishers President’s Award.

Dennis Lambert, on the other, is a renowned songwriter and producer who gained recognition for his consistent hit-making and songwriting in every style of music throughout a successful musical career that spans four decades. He has written almost 600 songs to-date and produced close to 100full-length albums, which have generated sales in excess of 100 million and earned multiple Grammy Awards, American Music Awards and BMI Awards.

Although he has written many hits performed by other big-name artists, Lambert is very popular in the Philippines for the songs, “Ashes To Ashes” and “Of All The Things,” both of which he wrote and sang. After a brief respite in his songwriting and producing activity in the 80s, Lambert occasionally resurfaced to work with the likes of Natalie Cole and The Commodores. This concert was made possible by San Miguel Corporation, Shell Philippines, Marco Polo Hotel and Mindanao Times.

Winged Hope
Text by Leda A. Esguerra
Photos by Ben Razon

He appeared unaffected by the attention, seemingly disinterested in his guests who came a long way just to see him. He kept a pensive stance as he watched the blue gray sky begin its transition from day to night. Yet, probably tired of the endless stares received from curious but often well-meaning onlookers, he moved to a branch whose thick leaves hid him from their view. Pag-asa wanted some privacy.

Pag-asa (Hope) is one of the 23 Philippine Eagles (Pithecophaga jefferyi) who currently considers the Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos his home. His birth on January 15, 1992 gave conservationists hope that captive breeding can indeed help increase the fast-dwindling number of his species. The eagles are threatened by poaching and destruction of habitat.

The Philippine Eagle Center is a project of the Philippine Eagle Foundation which aims to aid in the conservation of biological diversity through these types of programs: Captive Breeding Management; Field Research; Community-based Enterprise Development; and Conservation Education.

According to a poster near the center's entrance, Captive Breeding aims to "release offspring to suitable vacant habitats and sustain wild population" while Field Research, among others, "involves locating active nests, monitoring of wild eagles, retrieval of captured wildlife and tracking to determine home ranges, juvenile dispersal and habitat use."

Meanwhile, Community-based Enterprise Development requires "work with marginal income families in uplands by providing them with sustainable economic enterprises as livelihood alternatives." Conservation Education, on the other hand, "targets urban and rural communities in developing public awareness and understanding of wildlife conservation issues." Teachers, students, local governments, private business corporations, indigenous cultural communities and media are partners in this program

Angelito Cereno, manager of the Conservation Education Program, said the level of awareness on the need for conservation has increased in the province, and in other areas in Mindanao. He attributed this positive development to effective information dissemination.

The last time the Foundation confiscated a Philippine Eagle from a private individual was last January in Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat in Central Mindanao. The record number of six confiscations was reported in 1995. Mr. Cereno noted individuals caught keeping eagles in captivity often justified such act by claiming the bird preyed on their domestic animals. He stressed none of these allegations have ever been proven. He suspects that those who continue to hunt the Philippine eagle do so to kill it and put it on display as some kind of trophy.

Government has similar initiatives in preserving biodiversity through the Philippine Eagle Conservation Project of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

In its year 2000 Accomplishment Report, PAWD (Protected Areas and Wildlife Dept.) Chief Leonilo Rivera said the Regional Eagle Watch Team was able to confirm 32 Philippine eagles in the wild within eight nest sites or habitats within Region 11. Four of these sites are located in Davao Oriental, namely, Mt. Agtuganon Range, Mt. Kampalili Range, Mt. Hamiguitan Range and Mt. Tagugpo Range. The rest are in Mt. Tagub Range in Compostela Valley and Mt. Malambo Range, Mt. Sibulan-Apo Ranges and Mt. Tinaan Range, all in Davao City.

As long as the government and concerned individuals and groups ceaselessly help conserve the Philippine eagle, Pag-asa and the rest of his kind may yet find that privacy and maybe, they would be more willing to entertain visitors -- on their own terms this time.

Museums Point the Future By Way of the Past

Change is the only constant in this universe. Those who fail to anticipate its effects suffer its consequences.

As a growing city, Davao needs to find ways to project itself into the future so residents living within its confines get to harness the advantages its rich resources offer. Davao’s rich cultural heritage and the peaceful melding of different cultures are strategic psychic resources.

Efforts to establish the Davao Museum at the old Court of First Instance Building in Magallanes Street is timely. The construction of a museum building by the Philippine Women’s University at University Avenue at Juna Subdivision is another laudable initiative. These two museum projects are indeed very fortunate developments for Davao City.

These parallel efforts are evident of an emerging awareness and concerted agenda to put together a showcase of THE Culture and History that permeates Mindanao in general and Davao in particular.

Museums have very long incubation periods before one can say the museum has a functional role in community development. Doing research and archiving collections are gargantuan efforts that will need a lot of resources which need to be sustained through time. The tasks of doing research and unifying divergent ideas will be daunting. Yet, only museums can do these tasks.

By collecting artifacts, chronicling events and archiving stories these museums encourage the present generation to participate in setting the future direction of Davao City so different options are explored and discussed and Davao’s future potentials are taken into full consideration.

By retaining the façade of the old Court of First Instance building Davaoeños would be reminded that the building was once a court house where judgment was rendered on numerous judicial matters that had a lot of bearing on what Davao and Southern Mindanao is today.

It would be tragic for Davao City if the façade of the old building would be taken down too (This column is being written as the building is being demolished, with the façade still there).

It would be more tragic if these two museums would just end up as bodegas of native artifacts – old tools, clothes, pictures and what not – where in school children are required to see and pay an entrance fee because it is a school requirement.

Or the museum becomes a shrine of some persons’ personal effects, completely disjoint from the present except for the fact that that person played a political or whatever role in the city’s past.

And these museums would become a farce if they would eventually be established for the consumption of foreign tourists who have no real stake in our cultural past and future potentials.

Culture frozen in time, dried, preserved and put out for local or foreign pedestrian observation loses relevance. Exerting a lot of effort and spending large sums of money to archive artifacts - clothing, instruments, beliefs and tradition -, without understanding the forces that caused the demise of their use and relevance in the life of the community, will become an exercise in futility.

Many institutions set up museums with the unexpressed hopes of preserving culture and earning a profit. That is - their collection will inspire school children to love the “culture” on display and foreigners would willingly pay a nice sum to see the “cultural” collection.

These worn out, rut filled directions taken by museums ought to be abandoned.

Museums need to be vibrant centers of culture and citizen involvement to be relevant in the life of a city. To achieve such roles, discourse and debate about past events and the anticipated directions that the city will take need to be encouraged. When museums involve the community and enhance its present life and culture, it easily gains much needed community support.

When museums allow the present generation to gain awareness and understanding of the forces that caused dramatic changes in the past, its role as a repository of the past as a guide into the future is fulfilled.

Let us all hope that both museums would take Davao City’s future potentials into consideration as their organizers find ways to archive the past. And not just duplicate each other :-(!

I don't really blame him; in fact he works effectively as a mayor. From 1988 up until now, he has worked really hard for the betterment of this city. My only complaint is that we must not look at him caretaking Davao forever, and ang pagforce niyang pagdagan kay Sara Duterte. We have to get out of our shell, encourage our councilors to get out also (what I mean is, invite investors, rather than focus on passing ordinances.) We mustn't depend on him for a long time. We must be bullish in attracting investors, and not be sitting docks for some time.

Davao has finally settled its score against gangs and riots, against dirtiness and anti-environment deeds, against drug pushers and lords, against gambling and the like, but we must admit that in order to attain things, we have to sacrifice things a bit. We cannot focus on one thing and leave the rest of the others. We have to do some interdependence. The mayor cannot work out on his own of course, he needs the stalwart presence of his councilors, the vice mayor and other people. Davao has tried to attain being the most livable city in the Philippines, but being a promising "metro" city, we can't live things the way they were; life isn't that perfect.

As for the rankings, they're just there for people to look and be awed at. We cannot depend for so long on the AIM rankings, the Asiaweek rankings and so and so; the real score here is what people really feel. Numbers don't exactly speak for themselves. Davao must get out of the rankings shell and do something realistically brilliant. It's just the toppings; we couldn't even taste the fillings yet.

What politicians should do is avoid ballyhooing each other. If Digong and Ben G will make up for their mistakes in the past and work together, some things will work out. Imagine these two working together- Ben G for the economy and Digong for peace and order. they should work together and avoid brash politicking, avoid macho posing and unite together to create a solid, worthy Davao. Things must be balanced; there should be a solid, optimistic anticipative imagination for all politicians instead of downright being against it.

If Davao replaced Zamboanga years ago as a premiere city in Mindanao, today, it must prove itself again in a more global arena, more importantly in this changing world. Not that I blame digong, but if people will refuse change and live occupied, selfish lives, we won't go anywhere with this kind of place.

Hoep this would happen. I remain optimistic that despite the negative things about politics, Davao will emerge from its cradle and do a full leap forward. But I hope the media will also cover these things. I'm sick and tired of watching petty street crimes, people ran over and politics looming in local news.

oo! Davao is back to its blooms! definitely!

You have been with SSC since august of 2005. ako, i came in a month after. from 2005-2006 all we have about Davao are plans and projections which are starting to get realized this year.

Indeed! before I registered there was only one very slow thread called "any pictures of davao or zamboaga", that was ca. 2004.... that was my only source of rare davao "development" photos... now I have tons of them  .. thanks to sir junax, nick, psionic, wayway, dinabaw, benson, (sorry nakalimutan ko names ng ibang davao maniniyots) ... and to you, marami ka ring pics na post dito

^^ Anyway, SSC is becoming a preferable site for getting information, free-hand. I also enjoyed foruming with fellow enthusiasts and discussing ways on solving problems in the city. this is so much better than so-called "tourist sites."

BTW kuya TJ, I almost forgot to add:

1 - The commercial complex near SSS

I bet our local real estate agents / brokers are doing their best when it comes to selling this project. I hope it will be a successfull project.

Sana nga same ang concept ng DMCI Eco4000 and their other projects in Metro Manila like Mayfield and Ortigas Mansions.

Just imagine....5 to 8 buildings na ganyan (ECO4000). it will be a superb sight in Davao just like dun sa Ortigas Mansions and Mayfield sa may Cainta.

pero bakit ganun name nya ano..ECO4000..ehehehhehehehe parang pang robot..

anyway....although i am really into skyscrapers..when it comes to residential projects..i kinda like these kind of projects (walk up condos).

baka 4000 building ang itatayo  seriously, they could really start the condo living trend, davao's land is getting scarcer ... i hope that the future urban-low cost housing projects will be condo like (mid-rise or high-rise).

They've already started operations last year siguro. I got hired, but I'm seriously considering other offers. As of now, they've got 400 agents. Their office is near the ANFLOCOR building. Glass type siya. But there are steel bars in the lobby, just to avoid people being stared at.

wowwwww!!!!! as in glass building? coool..so dili sya typical box type na e-office. awesome! tinted sya? i hope someone can post some pix here!

^^ On the other hand, I am thinking of a good way to boost Davao.

Why not do TV dramas? I have to agree that in order to snag a significant chunk of audience and get people to invest is to project a positivistic image about it. I also suggest that major TV networks must do the same.

It would be cool if they put on film the Alamat ng WalingWaling or the MT Apo Legends topbilled by popular good actors. Maybe a "modern" TV series will also do the trick to promote davao's unique urban landscape. Unique Urban Landscape kasi you're in the middle of a cosmopolitan area but with a rustic/rural feel. Just a thought.

Congrats SSC-Davao for the 43rd Thread! Whew!

Wow! Ang bilis ng growth ng Link2Support! Sana lalaki din ang ibang call centers ng davao so they can build their own buildings (preferably 4-7 storeys like PPS and Convergys at Ayala). These buildings will be a great addition to our panorama, with their (presumably) modern and sophisticated designs.

Heard last night Mayor Duterte did approve the banning of aerial spraying ,I salute him .even Agriculture secretary Arthur Yap was here to convinced Mayor Duterte to extend the banning for 3 years and the companies who are affected w/ the aerial banning treatened to seek other place to do business , well the mayor is firm he is for "what's good for the people". Maybe some of us will say its negative for future investors to know that we are strict when it comes to environmental laws People of Davao will have to choose clean and livable environment or progressive cit but a polluted one?

Sec. Arhtur Yap said significant ,but you know the mayor is not stupid "to play the game" i've heard ang gumagamit ng aerial spraying sa Davao City is only minimal (btw in Bukidnon banned aerial spraying) so those companies need davao more than we need them.

pero i guess nagbago na sya now..eheheh not sure though..last thing i know, DFC was sold to the Sorianos, then my dad left and worked with the Mossers.

Independent films being produced in Davao is a good move though!
