Siemens, Davao hospital sign contract for P46-M state-of-the-art equipment

The Davao Doctor's Hospital (DDH) and Siemens have signed a contract for the former's acquisition of a top-of-the-line and state-of-the-art P46-million worth Siemens Artis Cath Lab System, the first and only available Cath Lab System in the country.

DDH chair Dr. Honorio Hilario, Sr. and DDH president Dr. Dominador Cabrera signed the contract Thursday with Siemens senior vice president Juan Miguel Tan and Siemens vice president for business and administration Ariel Lacson.

Hilario said this was aimed at enhancing the capability of the hospital to better serve their patients but at a lower cost compared to other hospitals in Cebu and Manila.

According to Tan, the Cath Lab System, a versatile and all-digital solution, sets a new standard in image acquisition and processing.

He said with its fully-digital imaging, it provides oustanding sharpness and contrast resolution for high diagnostic quality and detailed visual information.

The equipment's flexible positioning makes any projection and angles possible, he said.

"Its unique ergonomic design allows the operator to manipulate the entire system close to the patient while its innovative voice control is an ingenious option for functions that may expose the operator to hazard," Tan said.

He said through the Siemens Axiom Artis Cath Lab System, diagnostic and interventional procedures for heart patients are made more efficient.

"The high technology system detects coronary artery disease with better accuracy, delivers excellent image quality at faster procedural times and significantly reduced radiation to both the patient and the doctor," he said.

Dr. Bernard Chiew, director of the DDH's Heart Institute, said the system will be installed after their staff undergoes training on how to use it. (PNA)

First up, I don't want to incite a "CvC" word war between the two cities (read article below). I just thought this would interest/enlighten you Davao citizens. :colgate:

Davao losing to Cebu because of lack of convention center

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/14 February) -- Davao City should have its own international convention center because it is losing to Cebu as national convention venue. Mary Ann Montemayor, East ASEAN Growth Area Tourism Council chair, said Cebu's International Convention Center, venue of the recent ASEAN Leaders’ Summit in January, is pulling business away from Davao despite the city's unique tourism advantages.

"How much Cebu is earning, that's what we are losing," Montemayor said in a press conference Wednesday.

She said the project could be built as a joint venture between the government and local businessmen. Montemayor said the convention center would require "a huge investment" but added it doesn’t have to be like Cebu's CICC.

She said the joint venture can follow the model of Malaysia's tourist city, Langkawi, which hosted the ASEAN Tourism Forum in 2005, a year before Davao hosted it. Langkawi experienced a boom after the Malaysian government built a large exhibition-convention hall.

She said the ball is now with the private sector as government, which she said is keen on the project, is waiting for a proposal.

Already, she said, four businessmen have expressed interest. But Montemayor said government needs to announce more incentives to get more people interested.

Special incentives, she said, could be offered like tax exemption and fast business registration. She said the Davao City Investment Promotion Center is aggressive in its campaign.

But the government, she said, could craft more special offers like exclusive booking of government events in the convention center.

The Cebu Provincial Government built the CICC in time for the 12th Asean Summit and 2nd East ASEAN Summit at a cost of around US$10-million dollars. It is a three-storey structure with a gross floor area of 28,000 square meters on a 3.8 hectare land at the Mandaue City Reclamation Area in Metro Cebu.

She said Cebu's tourism prospects lag behind that of Davao but the latter could not compete with the city in the Meetings Incentives Conventions and Exhibits (MICE) industry.

Montemayor said more players wanted to come here for the Packaging Congress late last year but didn’t push through because of space constraints for exhibits.

Davao City, she said, also lost in the bid to host the Philippine Ad Congress because of the venue problem.

She said most MICE organizers require big venues for big events. Existing venues are either too small for many local and international events or are not available anymore. She cited the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas' convention hall and the Apo View Hotel ballroom which gave way to a casino.

In its website, Davao City has positioned itself as the convention center of southern Philippines.

The city has become the "preferred destination for conventions and conferences" due to its changing and improving economic and tourism landscape.”

"It attracted organizers to conduct major conventions here instead of proverbial settings like Manila or Cebu," the website said.

"Modern, sophisticated, and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for conventions and conferences are now readily available. This is equally complemented by the establishment of new first class hotels and mountain resorts,” it added.

Mura'g nagpanic lang uban samo sa school. It's either layo lang kaayo mis kabihasnan nganong ing-ato mi or it really did happen.

I forgot the name of the new establishment near the venue, the one I've been mentioning for a very long time, but it's a restaurant by the way.

Anyway, unsaon man tong gabokon na nga building dapit sa may magsaysay? Prime lot man daw to. Naa bay mga plans nga himoon to? And speaking of Uyanguren, wala pa lagi tong Arko nahimo?

^^ I passed by Uyanguren on my way home and criss-crossed among the streets of Chinatown District and to my dismay, no signs of any construction of the chinese gates. When kaya nila ni sugdan. I'm excited kasi it will not only uplift the urban beauty of Davao but also enhance its tourism prospects.

Naa pud Honeybear on-going construction along qUIRIno Ave. beside the Central Convenience store in front of Central Bank.

How about the bidding of the venue for ASEAN Regional Forum? Is it finally decided by the President? If I'm not mistaken, Davao was part of the suggested venues....

^^ as per news articles and other sources:

there are already 4 investors who are planning to build a convention center sa Davao.

as per Konsehal's blog:

JS Gaisano is planning to develop a convention center in Quimpo. Same din as with SM City Davao.

so there are brighter days up ahead....IMO, wag na tayong magborrow. It's about time that the business sector should be risk takers too. We have been so dependent on our local government for ages. What the city government can do is provide tax incentives, perks, etc etc.

Davao gets P200-M new investments

By Manuel T. Cayon
Reporter

DAVAO CITY—A fresh investment of P200 million came this early from three companies, two of them in food processing, as the city’s investment monitoring body has set a target of P2 billion in investments for the rest of the year.

The new investments came from Microtel Inn and Suites, which launched last year its P100-milllion 50-room project in the Damosa area, and from a food processing firm and a service provider in the food industry.

The last two projects were already in their construction stage, said Roberto Teo, chief of the Davao City Investment Promotions Center.

Although Microtel launched its project last year, it invested about P80 million this year in the continuing phase of its construction that was expected to last for the next eight months more.

Teo said many other inquiries were made, mostly from Korean nationals, and these were in tourism, such as hotels, inns and restaurants, and in education, mostly in English-language programs.

The prospects for a serious investment though were nil as Teo said that “they wanted to wholly own the project which we cannot give, because we would violate the Constitution”. The Philippine Constitution restricts foreign ownership to 60 percent.

He said that Koreans “definitely know that we have this law but I would understand them because some of them would complain that their Filipino partners were extorting money from them.”

“But this is not happening only in Davao. You would hear this thing elsewhere,” he said.

Teo expects the bulk of new investments to come from the food-related sector “because of our agriculture industry that needs support, and it would be good due to the added value.” Davao’s economy depends largely on banana exports, although it also earns from its mango and coconut products.

He said his office would like to see investments breach the P2-billion mark.

In 2005, the city earned a total of P112 billion in investments and taxes, with new investments reaching P1.4 billion. Last year, investments surpassed the P1.7-billion target by P47 million.

Maayong Buntag!

I think those buildings are era 40's or 50's and IMO it was closed not by the owner but by the city government because it's unhibitable and very hazardous kasi pag yung owner ang nagsira nuon dapat may construction na bec it is expensive to demolished and nothing built.

Anyway for me the best buildings to preserve are those on the back which is still structurally sound and is currently use by shipping lines office, i think its more 60's bldgs. Whocan remember the building which looks like a old hangar(semi circular) in Suazo i think, sayang sinira nila ngayon dapat inayos lang.

07 investment target: P2-B
MindanaoTimes

THE city government is expecting P2 billion in investments this year after surpassing its P1.7 billion target last year.

Engr. Roberto Teo, chief of the Davao City Investment Promotions Center, said that although the target is very high, he is confident that it will be achieved as some prospective investors have started asking the business climate of the city.

Three companies have already applied for registration of businesses, but they have yet to comply the requirements, said Teo. He said the investments of the three new companies would be about P200 million.

One of the three new investments is the 50-room Microtel Davao, a hotel located at the Floirendo property at Sasa. Teo said the company is pouring in about P80 million. Officials of the company said the project is a joint venture between the Microtel Inns and Suites Pilipinas Inc. and the Damosa Land Inc. of the Floirendo family.

The other two investments are a P75 million cold storage facility located in Tibungco, and a food processing plant located in the southern part of the city, Teo added. Teo believes that more investments will come to the city within the next few months, particularly in the food processing and tourism sector.

“We are producing more agricultural products so we need to process,” he said. Another area of interest, he added, is property development as some housing developers would like to build houses in the city to accommodate its growing population.

One foreign group was interested in putting up a hotel in the city, but Teo said the group wanted that it control the investment. He pointed out to the group in their meeting last week, that under the Philippine Constitution, a foreign investor should only limit its ownership of a company to just 40 percent with the rest of the investment coming from its local counterpart.

But Teo admitted that investors have been lukewarm about investing in the city because of the baseless negative image of the city brought about by its being part of Mindanao which outsiders considered as a conflict-affected area.

Because of this, the city government will intensify its promotion of the city as a peaceful and safe investment haven to attract more investors. However, confidence of local investors on the city has remained high because they were the ones who invested last year, he added.

This was confirmed earlier by investors in the business process outsourcing who claimed that the city has slowly attracted companies in the sector. A pioneer in the medical transcription business, Sheila Mae Pe of the SSP Medical Transcription Inc., said she did not think of the image when she first started her company as she believed the city was the most peaceful place in the country. Pe added that the city has also become attractive to the industry because it can provided the human resources requirements of the companies.

Jetti comes to town
By Jon Develos

Jetti Supply Distribution Incorporated recently launched its latest gas service station located at corner JA Sarenas, Davao Medical School road, this city. The Jetti Medical School Gas Service Station displayed on its 1,084 square meter lot area and operated by Far East Travelers opened its doors to the public just this February 10, their eighth and latest branch here in Mindanao.

City Councilor Boni Militar along with Jetti Supply Corporate Affairs Manager Joselito Magalona, Mindanao Sales Manager Lindon Umandam and Retail Business Administrator Jessie Duque graced the station’s traditional opening rites joined by its 25 members of their working crew and guests.

“The Jetti Medical School Gas Service Station is one of our expansion entries for Southern Mindanao. This is our latest to date after having five stations in Cagayan de Oro and two in Iligan City. Our main depot is the Phividec Industrial Estate located in Taguluan Misamis Oriental,” Duque said. “All stations are company owned but dealer operated.

Davao City is definitely a good market for us,” he added. Jetti Supply Distribution Incorporated boosts its array of fuel ranging from Diesel, Unleaded and its carrier JX Prime. Its fuel consumption is that based of quality standards from that of Singapore where they directly import its stocks.

This refilling station is opened from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. as of the moment but will adjust its working time until 12 midnight as of next month. Jetti Supply Distribution Incorporated will soon open two more branches this year located in Cabaguio this March and its Matina station sometime June.

Meanwhile, in celebration of the Chinese New Year on February 18, the Jetti Medical School Gas Service Station will be having a simple affair highlighting the traditional Chinese Lion Dances with guests to welcome the Year of the Pig.

Call center course opens in Tagum

Davao City (16 February) -- A private sector led initiative in conjunction with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s TESDA-led (Technical Education Skills and Development Administration) Training-for-Work flagship program is expanding in Tagum City with Academia de Davao’s one-month call center finishing course.

The finishing course is designed to equip students with much-needed communication skills essential for those wanting to work in call centers and other business process outsourcing industries.

The growing BPO industry is expected to provide much needed employment opportunities for Filipinos, however many of those who apply for jobs do not pass the standards set by the call center firms because of inadequate communications skills.

“For every 400 who apply in call centers, only about 20 or 30 are accepted.” Said Lorna Rasay, Language training director of the Academia de Davao, a two-year old technical-vocational school based in Tagum City.

Though Davao del Norte does not have a call center, Rasay said the prospects of call center industry here is good, call center firms in neighboring Davao City and also in Cebu and Manila are looking into recruiting here as they prefer the work attitude of many Dabawenyos.

Rasay said the course will equip the students with necessary knowledge about the industry. Using TESDA training modules, the school provides video training program on American English, students are also provided with individual computers with headsets and enabled with training software and Skype internet-based system that will enable call-simulation workshops.

The TESDA modules were developed based on the call center industry requirements that will arm students with the basic knowledge of the industry. (PIA XI/RG Alama) [top]

Agri sector urges city to review zoning law
By Rizalene P. Acac Published : 2007-02-16

THE review of the Zoning Ordinance should take place this year to stabilize the agriculture sector, which has been severely affected by piece-meal land conversions of the city council. Patrick John Castro, executive director of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the zoning ordinance is one of the main advocacies that they would pursue for 2007. He said it is crucial for the city government to re-study the ordinance to help boost the agri-business sector. Castro said while agriculture is steadily improving with the expansion of the port facility in Tefasco and the continued growth of agricultural companies like DOLE, Sumitomo and Unifrutti, the hog and poultry sector has lagged behind. Jun Hernaez, the chamber’s consultant, said investments on the sector have been dismal due to unstable zonification as evidenced by lesser loans approved for hog and poultry sector compared to the previous years. Teresita M. Pascual, head of the good agricultural practice task force, said another reason why the review should be pursued is to strengthen the export-processing zone in Sirawan, Toril, home to various agricultural processing plants. Pascual said the area has been named as a residential zone even if majority of its neighbors are hog and poultry farms. “That is why Uraya subdivision is right at their doorstep,” she said. The processing companies based in area include Suhico and Nenita Quality Foods. She said the sector is strongly lobbying to hasten the review since they are targeting to export hogs to Singapore by June of this year. Pascual said the Agriculture and Food Veterinary Agency of Singapore with the Bureau of Animal Industry has been conducting accreditation of farms in the city. She said it is high time to bolster the sector to capture the market of the neighboring Asian countries considering that the country has remained Bird Flu and Food and Mouth Disease Free.

Davaoo City Chamber of Commerce mull Mindanao ICT gab

THE City Government and the business sector of Davao City are taking on a major awareness program to promote Davao as the Information and communication technology (ICT) hub of Mindanao.

Andre Fournier, chair of the ICT commerce committee of Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII), said they are eyeing an e-services (electronic services) forum to promote the city to the ICT industry.

Speaking during Friday's I-Speak forum at the regency Inn, Fournier said initial efforts have been made for the staging of the first Mindanao ICT Congress in September.

"We have to give the event an international flavor, so that our partners in the Bimp-Eaga will be encouraged to join," Fournier said.

He added that Bobby Teo of the Davao City Investment Board will be in Manila this month to promote the city's ICT potential and capability.

"Davao's good weather, its stable peace and order situation and competent workforce are the best come-on for the ICT investors," Fournier said.

He added that a Techno Kapehan will be held at the Department of Trade and Industry next week to create an investor's and entrepreneur's group which will concentrate on IT-based businesses.

Arrangements with universities and schools have also been made in order to facilitate the offering of a three unit elective on technopreneurship this coming June to provide a venue for budding technopreneurs to develop their ideas.

Doc to purchase P47-M heart equipment
By Carlo P. Mallo

THE Heart Institute of the Davao Doctor's Hospital on Thursday inked a deal with German technology-giant, Siemens, for the acquisition of a Siemens Axiom Artis Cath Lab System (cath lab).

The P47 million state-of-the-art equipment is the latest model of its kind offered by the German brand.

Dr. Dominador Cabrera, president and CEO of Davao Doctor's Hospital, said the acquisition further strengthens the core value of the hospital, which is to serve the people with the best quality at the lowest possible cost.

Davao Doctor's Hospital's Heart Institute started operations way back in October 2004 and is the best cardiac facility in the entire Mindanao, asserts Dr. Bernard Chiew, chief of the Heart Institute.

Chiew also said that despite the young age of the institute, they have been aggressively upgrading their facilities to continue to be at par with the best hospitals not only in the country but even in the East Asean Growth Area, a trade aggrupation of the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines.

While chair of the board Dr. Honorio Hilario said the procurement of the facility is primarily because they do not want to shortchange their clients but would want to give them the best healthcare possible.

The new cath lab will be available in the hospital within the next four to six months.

I am on the same page with xzibit31 to have celebration of lights in the stead of firecrackers. I think the best place to have this done is the beach fronts in Matina or the Agro Foundation grounds. They then can opt to close the traffic on north and south directions of road leading to Bolton bridges.

LoL. Nawala sya for some time and now, they're constructing a big, and new resto along Quirino. That's good, ain't it.

@Dinabaw ...nice jud ang Mountain Haven. I've been there quite a lot before pero I haven't been able to visit the place for nearly a year now. Tinuod ba nga dunay celebrities nga nag-purchase ug lots did2 sa Mountain Haven?

@Dinabaw ...the night market would be great. It would keep Chinatown alive from, say, 7pm to 12mn. Nice kaayo na, lalo na kung naa nay mga Arko on every street corner, ug daghan na resto sa place (other than the litsunans at Chavez). WoW!

Walang tours to Davao's chinatown, Teej, as far as I know. The most "chinese" the tour can get is at Lon Wah temple along Cabaguio, which is a mainstay in any Davao City Tour itinerary. Ala kasing mapasyalan ang mga tourist sa Chinatown karun, ug wala kaayo'y makit-an nga nindut. I dunno how they're gonna push the Chinese Leaders in Davao for the Arches Project. I think a good way to get the moolah coming in for the project is to allow Chinese Families to sponsor the construction of Arches in their own names. Parang, perpetuation of their Family Names ang mangyayari. E.g., The Lims can sponsor an Arch with the name "Lim Arch" or sumthin, then there will be scores upon scores of other chinese families sponsoring their own arches (kay di papildi?). In no time mapuno na ug arko nang kada kanto sa Chinatown! :)

Yep open po ang Lon Wah temple to Tour Operators... pero I think before the general public (those not on DOT-accredited tours) can enter the temple only after contacting the "management." I think naga pangayo na sila ug entrance fee or something. The Tour Operators actually pay them para ma-visit ang place ng mga tourists.

that would be good. and maybe business owners of stores lining the streets close to where proposed arches will rise be to finace the costs. it will encourage competitition who could come up the most beautiful arch. sort of grouping them bec i understand chinatown covers a whole disrict of sta ana magsaysay ave, etc. just a thought

haha ang taas pa niyan ha but really that's very informative the best book so far i read(hahaha read daw o!) seriously if you can see the designs in FIGURES they are very elaborate and detailed , you cannot find that in Davao Musuem , if you want to copy the whole book just click the link.:okay:

^^ I downloaded the e-book 2 days ago. Tapos I read the whoooolllleee thing in almost eight hours straight! Nalipong ko! Pero, yes, it is totally informative. I adore the Bagobos and their elaborate clothing (according to the author, unmatched daw by any other Philippine tribe for their ornamentation!) WoW!

Pero something scared me in the E-book. :ohno: The tales and recollections of Balatican and the SACRIFICES got me the shivers! Pero all's well. I believe these are no longer practiced now (I believe lang). And I don't really scorn our early settlers for practicing these things. It's in their faith and culture, which I wholly respect. This book gave me a newfound appreciation for things Davawenyo!

I hope to read more of Davao's glorious past!

Davao and China!
Working hand in hand for a brighter, stronger, and better future

Davao City is the sister-city of Nanning, in Guanxi, China.

China designated Nanning as the permanent site of the China-ASEAN Trade Expo, which started two years ago to promote trade and investments between China and the 10-nation ASEAN.

Nanning is located in the southern part of Guanxi Province, in the southernmost region of the China, which borders ASEAN country Vietnam. Known as the “South Gate of China,” Nanning’s 20-year development plan, coinciding with the implementation of China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement, seeks to develop this tropical city, similar to Davao, as the “Green City of China.”

It boasts of one of the largest herbal gardens in probably the world, a 20 hectare landscape featuring over 1,000 plants, herbs and medicinal trees.

Here's the significance of the Davao-Nanning ties. Davao is the southern gateway of the Philippines, and de facto seat of the BIMP-EAGA, while China is developing Nanning as its southern link to the ASEAN.

The similarities in the rich agricultural and natural resources of the two cities were also apparent apart from the fact that both cities were vying as tourism and convention destinations in their respective regions.

Nanning now boasts of two air links with the ASEAN with direct flights to Hanoi and Bangkok. It has also flights to Hong Kong in addition to many destinations in China. Davao, on the other hand, has links to Singapore, Manado, and Palau, and a number of cities in the country.

Davao has sister city pacts with Keelung, Taiwan, Manado & Bitung, Indonesia, and Tacoma, near Seattle, USA. Nanning, on the other hand, has sister links with Akita, Japan, Somogy, Hungary, Christchurch, New Zealand, and Oklahoma, USA.

China plans to use Nanning as it inroad into the ASEAN; Davao has Nanning as its door to China. The sister-city ties will surely boost the two cities preeminent positions in their own countries and sub-regions.

On March 30 2006, a delegation from Nanning People’s Government headed by Mayor Lin Guoqiang visited Philippine Davao City. The delegation held talks with Davao’s Mayor, Parliament, tourism center, business invitation center and chamber of commerce, and signed the intention agreement on establishing sister cities between the two cities, which is to establish a platform for friendly cooperation between Nanning and Davao Philippines.

Davao, the largest city in the Philippines, is the center of trade, commerce, agriculture and services in Southern Philippines, and a new-rising center for exhibition and tourism industries as well. An official signing ceremony was held to show that Davao City thought highly of the visit by the coming delegation.

I agree with you in this system Dex. It's so common here in Vancouver that private companies donate a big portion of the project cost and get naming rights in return. One example is the GM Place here which is the venue for big concerts such as U2, Celine Dion, to name a few and that place was so named because of huge monetary support from GM Motors. I hope Davao City council can come up with a policy like this.

Here's a news report about our very own Konsehal Peter Lavina aggressiveness to push for an establishment of a South Korea consular office. He also asked China to reopen its consular office in Davao....

DAVAO CITY -- Councilor Peter Laviña has filed a resolution urging South Korea to establish a consular office in the city. Laviña on Tuesday also called on China to reopen its consular office here, which was shut down in 1974.

There have been a growing number of South Koreans and Chinese in the city, some of them studying or doing business. About 400 South Koreans live in the city and they have to fly to Manila or Cebu to have their documents updated or processed. Laviña said South Korea and China have also become aggressive partners of the Philippines in tourism, trade and socio-cultural aspects. He said the presence of a consul here could also strengthen the city’s ties with its sister city of Nanning in China. Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has forged the sisterhood agreement with the mayor of Nanning last year. “It will also be a welcome development for the airline that opened a direct flight between Davao and Korea and Macau,” he said. Only Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia have consulates in the city while Palau, the Czech Republic and Spain have honorary consuls.

Firm to build first condo in the city

It's not the first condo housing in Davao by the way...

By Anthony S. Allada

A P90-MILLION five-storey residential condominium, the first-of-its-kind in Mindanao, is soon to rise at Ecoland-West Drive, Ecoland, just at the back of SM (Shoe Mart) City of Davao. The project, Ecoland 4000 Residences, is set for groundbreaking this morning that will be attended by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, Vice Mayor Luis Bonguyan, city councilors, and other important personalities.

This after the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board (HLURB) issued the development permit dated January 27 to the Makati-based DMC Urban Property Developers, Inc., the developer of the project. HLURB Regional Officer Roy Lopez said that the project developer applied for the permit middle of last year and since it complied with all the needed requirements, his office immediately granted the development permit.

Lea Salonga endorses call at Mt. Apo

She takes new role as Ambassadress of the “Call to Save the Mountains of the World” recognized by the United Nations. THE Human Development International Philippines and its partners salute and welcome the multi-awarded winning international star, Lea Salonga as she arrives today for her much awaited concert in the country’s gateway to the south.

A brief insight of her outstanding accomplishments showed that she did the singing voice for Disney’s Mulan and Princess Jasmine in Aladdin, and headlined the star-studded opening of Disneyland in Hong Kong and the Leonard Bernstein Tribute with the Symphonie orchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks in Munich as Maria in West Side Story.

She also recorded the Academy Award winning song, “A Whole New World,” with Brad Kane and the first Asian to play the widely popular role of Eponine in Les Miserables on Broadway. She reprised the same role in London, Hawaii (with the U.S. National Tour) and the “Dream Cast” 10th anniversary concert production at the Royal Albert Hall in London. In 2002 she starred in the hit “new” production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Flower Drum Song. Salonga gained international acclaim for her award winning performance as Kim in the London and Broadway productions of Miss Saigon.

In addition to winning the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award in London she also garnered the coveted Tony Award as well as the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Theatre World awards.

With all her international accomplishments which make every Filipino and the country proud, many are not aware that she has deep concern on the rapid degradation of the environment. She recently endorsed the “Call to Save the Mountains of the World” done at Mt. Apo, Davao City on February 25, 2002.

Today, said call has become a worldwide movement as it gained the support and endorsement of the U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan (2002), President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (2003), Former President Fidel Ramos, His Holiness the Dalai Lama of the Mountain Kingdom of Tibet (2004), Mayor Rodrigo Duterte of Davao City, Prince Andrew and many others. Pope Benedict XVI has also given blessing to the movement.

Ian Jon Mendoza, HDI Philippines Executive Director said that Salonga’s endorsement and her acceptance as Call Ambassador have boosted the movement’s momentum as it continue to spread worldwide that also brought honor to the city, the fact that the call was done at Mount Apo.

Salonga’s expression of support was received by Ryan Largo the HDI International Executive Director, HDI U.S.A. in San Jose, Ca., who informed HDI subsidiary organizations, Mendoza said. John Ryan Largo, HDI Foundation in consensus with its partners has cited Lea Salonga for her expression of support to the Call and her dedication to fulfill one’s innate obligation in the shared responsibility as caretaker of Mother Nature despite her busy schedules, fame and accomplishments.

The citation also quotes, that Salonga has become an epitome and inspiration to the many regardless of race, creed and nationality to do their part in making Planet Earth a better place to live for all beings.

HDI joins all Dabawenyo in welcoming the international star to Davao City not only as a person who has brought honor and prestige to the country but someone Davao can call her own the knowledge that the international star is an “Ambassador of the Call to Save the Mountains of the World,” - a Davao lead initiative and conceived by a Dabawenyo.

“The construction of this project is an indicator that Davao City is really a booming city that a giant contractor in Manila like the Consunji-owned DMC Urban Property Developers, Inc. is very confident to invest here. This is the first in Mindanao,” he said. The land area of the project is only 4,000 square meters to be constructed with two buildings of the same built with 91 parking lots, swimming pool, basketball court, park or playground.

The first floor of the two buildings will be used as the parking area while the roof top serves as the laundry drying area. The second, third, fourth, and fifth levels will be the saleable floor areas, the amount of which is varied depending on its location. If one avails the maximum area - end unit with balcony, he has to pay an estimated of P4.5-million, if he avails the floor area of inner area with balcony, he has to shell P2.5-million and if he wants the minimum floor area - inner unit, he has to spend P1.75-million. Every floor of each building is composed of 14 saleable floor areas, totaling all saleable floor areas to 112.

'Productivity key to banana plantation woes'

BANNING of aerial spraying in banana plantations in Davao City will instead allow owners to focus on productivity.

Davao City Investment and Promotion Center (DCIPC) head Engineer Roberto Teo on Thursday said that with the aerial spray ban, banana plantations will employ ground spraying, allocating portion of their lands to opening of roads for this kind of operations.

"When your area is lessened the volume of production will also be lessened," he said.

With the reduced area the banana producers need to focus on improving on their productivity in order to maintain the volume of their produce, said Teo.

He added that negotiating with the buyer on the price is also another aspect of improving the income.

Teo said the areas have to be efficient otherwise non-efficient areas will be ease out.

"I don't think banana producers will abandon Davao City and all they have to do is look at improving productivity," he said.

He said Davao City is a prime area because aside from lower cost of hauling it is very proximate to major seaports where international shipping lines dock to ferry banana fresh fruits to international markets. (PIA XI/prixdbanzon)

DOT releases P.5M for Mati baywalk
By Mai Gevera

Davao City (17 February) -- Seeing the initial efforts of the local government of Mati in pouring in funds for the construction of the Mati Park and Baywalk, the Department of Tourism (DOT) assisted the said project by releasing P500,000 to continue the construction.

Mati councilor and Tourism Committee Chair Nino Uy thanked the support of the DOT on the said project and for believing on the tourism potential of the said town which is soon to be formally declared a city after the holding of a plebiscite.

“We still need a lot of millions before we could finally inaugurate it as Mati Baywalk. But for now, we are so grateful for the trust given by the DOT as well as the initiate being pushed by the LGU,” Uy said.

The local government of Mati had released P2 million for as initial budget for the first phase of the said project, which will include the backfilling of about 1.5 hectares of the Pujada bay seaside area.

Even with the slow development, Matinians this early have started to appreciate the benefits of the baywalk as more and more people get to relax in the park and field activities of the LGU are also being held there.

Other plans include the vertical development, which will include the development of a marina, tree park, landscaping, construction of a coliseum and other edifice within the bay walk area. Last phase would be the designation of a private entity that would serve as park manager.

Uy estimated a total of P25 million needed to finish the Mati Baywalk. “We would need to look for support from the national government and congressional funds to realize this project,” he added.

At the moment, the LGU had already spent P5 million for this project alone. (PIA XI) [top]

Aboitiz unit gets 12-year power supply deal
By Zinnia B. Dela Pena
The Philippine Star 02/18/2007

Hedcor Inc., the power generating unit of listed investment holding firm Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc. (AEV), won the bidding for a 12-year contract to supply electricity to Davao Light & Power Co. Inc.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, AEV said subsidiary Hedcor was selected as the preferred bidder with its winning offer price of P4.0856 per kilowatthour (kwh).

Under the contract, Hedcor will supply 400 million kwh of electricity to Davao Light & Power beginning 2009.

The notice of award is expected to be issued to the Hedcor consortium within 15 days from yesterday’s conclusion of bid evaluation, AEV said.

Hedcor is the pioneer in the development and operation of environment-friendly mini-hydropower plants (below 50 megawatts of electricity) in the Philippines, operating 19 generating facilities in Benguet and Davao with a combined installed capacity of 113 megawatts.

The Aboitiz group is consolidating all its power generation/distribution assets into one company, Aboitiz Power Corp. The move is seen to enhance shareholder value and is in preparation for an initial public offering of shares sometime in March or April this year.

Among the group’s power companies that would be folded into Aboitiz Power include Hedcor, Luzon Hydro Corp., Western Mindanao Power, Southern Philippines Power, Davao Light & Power, Cotabato Light & Power, Visayan Electric, San Fernando Electric, Subic Enerzone, and Aboitiz Energy Solutions.

These corporations had a combined net profit of P1.98 billion in the first nine months of 2006. Of the total, P634 million was contributed by Davao Light, the third largest power distribution utility in the country.

AEV recently raised about P6.1 billion (approximately $124 million) from the sale of 742.51 million of its treasury shares. About 92 percent of the offering was taken up by foreign investors while the balance of eight percent was subscribed by domestic investors.

Proceeds from the sale will be used to fund various greenfield power projects, as well as support its participation in the privatization of the National Power Corp. power plants as they become available.

The Aboitiz group needs $270 million to finance the purchase of the 360-megawatt Magat hydroelectric power plant in Ramona, Isabela. AEV, together with partner SN Power, the second largest hydropower producer in Europe, won the bidding for Magat in December last year with a bid of $530 million.

It has also joined the auction to supply power in Sibulan and Tamugan, both in Davao, which would require the construction of a combined 72 megawatt hydroplant ‑ Sibulan (42 megawatts) and Tamugan (30 megawatts). About P8 billion to P9 billion will be needed for these two projects.
