Chinese school honors outstanding Davaoeños
By Rose Palacio
Davao City (1 October) -- The Davao Central High School (DCHS), popularly known as the Davao Chinese High School, has honored three outstanding Davaoeños for bringing honor and prestige not only for the school and the Chinese community but also to Davao City.
Cited were Jollibee Foods Corporation president and CEO Antonio Tan Caktiong; National Artist Ang Kiu Kok; and Philippine General Hospital Department of Neurosciences Chairperson Dr. Willy Lopez.
Caktiong recently won the 2004 World Entrepreneur of the Year Award in ceremonies held in Monte Claro, Monaco for his excellent contribution to the fast food industry through the Jollibee conglomerate.
Dr. Lopez, president of the Academy of Filipinio Neurosurgeons, was one of the doctors in the successful surgical operation of formerly enjoined Filipino twins Carl and Clarence Aguirre at the Montefiore Hospital for Children in New York.
The establishment of the DCHS in the 1920s was made possible through the encouragement of China's then Consul General Chou Kuo Shian (Zhou Guo Xian) and through the generosity of Davao's very own Don Fraancisco Juna Lim Villa Abrille (Lin Quan Fen).
The then Davao Chinese High School changed its name to Davao Central High School after President Ferdinand Marcos issued Presidential Decree No. 176 on April 23, 1973 calling for the "Filipinization" of all foreign schools in the country.
City Councilor Pilar Braga, chairperson of the City Council's Committee on Trade, Commerce and Industry, has filed a resolution citing the exemplary contributions of the DCHS in providing primary and secondary education to Chinese, Filipino-Chinese and Filipino elementary and high-school students in Davao City over the last eight decades.
Through her resolution, the City Council commended and congratulated the DCHS and its alumni association for their 80th founding anniversary September 25-28, 2004.
She also commended the three outstanding alumni for exemplifying and giving meaning to its scholastic tradition of academic excellence. (PIA-RPalacio)

I haven't been to SCR yet but I have always seen it from a distance during island hopping. That resort has a huge convention centre which can accommodate at least 2000 people. Sayang nga eh!

Bagani February 18th, 2007, 09:21 AM Hi Sir Bagani, do you have any insider's info regarding the closing down of Samal Casino? I just have hunch it was POLITICS!
Peace and Order was the culprit, bai. Or the perception. There was a time during its peak, nga daghan kaayo sila'g reservation. Then the Abu Sayaf scare came. Imagine mo na lang - 700 pax cancelled their reservation (this is insider info). I'm just not sure kung after the Sulu kidnapping or Pearl Farm incident.
And there was also social problem na kaya sana i-solve ni DOT Reg XI Director Garcia. It was the water problem. The main pipeline that feeds water to the resort passes through a community which was not supposed to exist anymore because they already have a relocation site complete with basic facilities. The community is within the area already leased to Ekran. In other words, gahi'g ulo. Complaints from resort management were mounting kasi pinuputol ng mga "squatter" ang linya ng tubig. Bakit daw sila walang tubig. But they're not supposed to be there in the first place. The Mayor requested Sonia Disgracia to intervene kasi it's a DOT-PTA property leased to Ekran. I think wala na-solved. The resort resorted to sourcing water from either mainland Davao or nearby Talikud. Imagine ang addition sa overhead nila. There was some incidents na nauubusan sila ng tubig. By word of mouth, talagang masisira sila. The water system was purposely built by DOT-PTA to serve the tourism development area because by law, it's a declared tourist zone. But as a social responsibility, it was also designed to serve the Kaputian community. It is now being managed by IGACOS government.

Flying V to establish bio-diesel plant here
By Carlo P. Mallo
THE country's leading bio-diesel producer, Flying V, will be operating a bio-diesel plant in Davao City by March 2007, in line with their effort to promote the use of bio-fuels.
Edwin Clapano, Flying V district manager for the Visayas and Mindanao region, issued this statement.
"We expect that the demand for bio-fuels, particularly bio-diesel will surge with the enactment of the bio-fuels act," Clapano said.
In order to meet the expected demand, Flying V will be putting up a plant in its depot in Sasa.
The plant will be capable of mixing the bio-fuel additive to the diesel. This process is necessary to transform ordinary diesel into the law prescribed bio-diesel.
Clapano also revealed that all their pump stations in the city proper are already selling bio-diesel at an average price of P32.82 per liter.
However, he still expects the price to go lower as its production would eventually increase.
Currently, Flying V is selling bio-diesel at the same price of regular diesel in order to provide their clients a better gauge in choosing what would not only be best for their vehicles, but also for the environment.

Sriwijaya Air launches Davao-Manado tour
MANADO CITY -- In its bid to promote Davao-Manado route as a key trade and tourism destination, Sriwijaya Air launches Monday a weeklong familiarization tour for local travel and tour operators both from Davao City and Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia which will give them a glimpse of the culture, adventure and nature sites in both areas.
Organized by Psalms Haven Travel and Tours, the appointed general sales agent of Sriwijaya Air in Davao, the familiarization trip in Manado will run from February 19-23 and in Davao City on February 23-26.
According to the Mindanao Economic Council (Medco), the Manado familiarization tour brings some 28 Davao travel agents to Manado's premier resorts, Manado's Bunaken National Park for a sightseeing and snorkeling tour, Minahasa Highland and other interesting places such as the Wolloan Village, Tondano Lake, and Pulutan Village.
The tour will also include visits to Maumbi Village, Airmadidi coconut and nutmeg processing place and Tarsius Zoo at Naemundung Tandurusa.
The group is expected to meet with Walanda Maramis, the first Indonesian women rights leader.
Some 25 Manado travel agents will also be arriving in Davao City on February 23 for the Davao Fam Tour, which highlights visits to the city's historical places, nature park as well as participation during the opening of the Davao Travel and Lifestyle Show, which showcases various tourism products of the different tourism industry exhibitors not only from Mindanao but also coming from Visayas and Luzon.
Sriwijaya Air is the newest Indonesian airline that flies direct Davao-Manado route on a twice a week flight frequency.
The Jakarta-based airline uses Boeing 737-200 to provide an alternate service for the Davao-Manado route, which is currently being served by
Merpati Airlines.
Sriwijaya flies every Monday and Thursday, arriving in Davao City at 10 a.m., and leaving for Manado at 10:45 a.m.
The airline can accommodate 124 passengers and can carry cargo up to 3.5 tons in weight.
Sriwijaya's additional flight for Davao-Manado route has been strongly welcomed by local officials, business and tourism players in both areas as it has paved the way for more business and tourism traffic between Mindanao and North Sulawesi, Indonesia.
The cities of Davao and Manado have been closely linked through the initiatives of the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-the Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-Eaga) cooperation.
Traveling now from Mindanao and Palawan to any area in Bimp-Eaga has been encouraging especially since that the Philippine government has revived last year the granting of Bimp-Eaga Travel tax exemption running through September 2008.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last year signed Memorandum Order No. 223, which extends the period of exemption from payment of travel tax to all Eaga-bound passengers originating from international seaports in Mindanao and Palawan, as well as international airports in the Philippines, provided they originate from Mindanao or Palawan.

Rajah_Soliman February 19th, 2007, 01:00 AM ^^ that's true paul.... in a way we still have "informal" road rules ... there are still a lot to improve in davao.... sidewalks, for instance ..... i dont think cost is the issue here, the city urban planning office might just lack visionaries and proactive people.... And now for another great news from Davao City!
Animo February 19th, 2007, 02:29 AM ;11707467']kindly enlighten me Ady..so mas dako diay ang atong problem sa dialect kay were not supposed to be bisaya din pala but chavacano?
i also find it funny na there are only a few davaoenos who can speak "dabawenyo" in my estimate, mga 10-20% lang siguro..lols ( the dialect in davor being the "dabawenyo" dialect that is)
@Ady001: i posted that question in Davao Cultural and Environmenal Thread what's a Davaoeno Chavacano ,@ Rajah_soliman told me tribes somewhere in Davao del Norte and @Animo said Zamboanguenos who migrated in Davao and settled in Malita . I asked my father if their is Dabawnenyo_chavacano he said he never heard of it the Japanese spoke combined Spanish /Tagalog and Cebuano .
^^ Dinabaw, there is a reserch made by zamboanga.com (check it online) about the movement of the creole, and the book Japan Views the Philippines by Lydia Yu-Jose tells the Japanese during the 1930s as a separate and unique entity, thus speaking Japanese as their own language in the city. Maybe the Spanish you knew they were speaking was way back the time of Lord Takayama Ukon, or during the 1915s prior when the Philippines still had that bug...
Anyway, back to the thread... hehehe, nagiging OT na ako ah... :D
Buhion sa nato ni... :D
It is hard to identity the system of languages because the statistics name them after the regions where the people live. That is why Dabawenyo is understandable with Cebuano. They are practically the same languages with different names. An aunt of mine speaks the 'native' language of Davao Oriental (Gov. Generoso). Its so different and clearly not Cebuano but she speaks and understand Cebuano-Davao.
Local Hispanophones are quick to ridicule it as rag Spanish [español de trapo], castila-castilahan and español del Parián. A historian from Cavite refers to it as the patois of Cavite. But patois—the Cassell’s English dictionary will tell you—means “a dialect spoken by the illiterate people of a district.”[2] Writers and scholars termed the Spanish dialect of Ternate and Cavite City as caló de Cavite, castellano de Cavite or simply caviteño.[3] Dr. José Rizal himself spoke of it as lengua de tienda, language of the marketplace. For the propagandist, Kawit-born Evaristo Aguirre, it was lengua carihán, eatery language. Not without a holier-than-thou demeanor and self-righteous airs, some Filipinos derisively smirk at the creole tongue’s syntactical faults and morphological aberrations. The not so uneducated of them even poke fun at its phonetic flaws. Yet, Norberto Romuáldez (1875-1941), renowned academician and Hispanist, declared decades ago that in our Philippine creole Spanish and “underneath the coarse characteristics of its form, the Filipino soul embraces the Spanish soul, and in the process both are fused together as one.” Philologist Dr. Antonio Quilis fondly calls this autochthonous tongue “cherished Philippine creole Spanish.” Indeed, the Chabacano language is a precious legacy from Spain.
This native tongue is up to this day an active vehicle of communication in the intimacy of Filipino homes in provinces, so geographically far-off from one other, yet firmly bonded by their common Hispanic-Filipino heritage. It bears the popular name of Chabacano/Chavacano. It is basically Spanish in spite of evident alterations in morphology, phonetics, syntax and lexicon.
About Davao Chavacano it still exist and a census from 1995 states that:
In 1990 the total of Filipinos who spoke Chabacano as mother tongue reached only 292,630. The 1990 census did not specify the five variants or dialects. Below are very interesting figures covering the entire archipelago. These statistics were culled from the 1995 national census published in 1997 and certainly they presaged a bright future of Chabacano:
Cavite City Chabacano ………….. 34,215 (0.05%)
Ternate Chabacano ………….. 6,843 (0.01%)
Cotabato Chavacano …….……. 20,529 (0.03%)
Davao Chavacano ………….. 54,744 (0.08%)
Zamboanga Chavacano ….………. 307,940 (0.45%)
Total Filipino Population (1995) ………….. 68,431,213
Chabacano-Speaking Population (1995) ..……… 424,273
^^ This has already increase and an estimated 600,000+ speakers exist in the country today excluding those who speaks it in Malaysia.

Rajah_Soliman February 19th, 2007, 01:21 PM Special Report: Destination Davao
To Market,
To Market
DAVAO CITY — If you are a first-timer here — if, let’s say, you don’t have any idea about this city except its tough-talking mayor, the beaches, the white sand — try visiting the public markets, where you will discover this metropolis’s naked allure. Try it — and you will find the ingenuity of a people trying to eke out a living, the prices that are lower compared to those in air-conditioned malls, the luscious fruits on the stands, the fresh flowers lining up the sidewalks, greeting you with their warmth.
The ‘Ukay-Ukay’ Hunt
DAVAO CITY — Shopping malls are aplenty in Davao City. But for those who are on a tight budget or do not want to be caught wearing the same outfit as the next person in the jeepney, there are alternative places to shop. One of these are the ukay-ukay (used clothes) stores. “Ukay-ukay” is a Visayan term that means to rummage.
Tudaya’s Allure
TUDAYA, Davao del Sur — The height and power of Tudaya Falls can leave you awed and breathless. It has a way of making you forget the difficulties of going there, when you trudged the hills, crossed the rivers, slipped on the muddy road and sprained a hand and tortured your butt. Tudaya Falls makes you realize it was all worth the trouble.
White Water
Adventure at Sibulan
SIBULAN, Davao del Sur — For the adventurous soul who dares brave the strong, harsh waters of a running river, there’s always the whitewater tubing facility in this village, in Darong town, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur, to check out. The tubing facility is located inside the Ayala compound, a 700-hectare coconut plantation owned by the Ayala-Zobels.
Take a Hike
DAVAO CITY — If living the city life in Davao may lose some of its appeal and excitement after sometime, retreating to the boondocks might be a good alternative. The surrounding areas of metro Davao have much to offer. To the northwest and southwest of the city are the mountains and hills of Calinan and Toril, which are set with long trails, rough terrains and both short and long climbs that are sure to delight the hiking enthusiast.
Davao’s
Dive Spots
DAVAO CITY — If you are looking for fun and exciting aqua-sport here, scuba diving is one of the options. There are several dive sites in the Davao Gulf, which are only 45 minutes to 120 minutes away from the city proper. You can choose from the following dive spots: Ligid Islad, Aundanao, Tagbobo, Pangubatan, Mushroom Rock, Paet Point, Coral Garden, Isla Reta, Talisay Wall, Angel’s Cave, Mansud Wall, Malipano Island, Pearl Farm, Punta del Sol, and Paradise Island.
How Davao
Became ‘Little Tokyo’
By Cheryll D. Fiel
davaotoday.com
DAVAO CITY - DAVAO CITY - On a wall in one of the galleries of the Davao Museum has an interesting exhibit on how Davao became a city.
Accordingly, Davao became a city out of fear of Japanese control. The account says that "during the constitutional convention in 1934, one delegate in the person of Pantaleon Pelayo Sr. denounced the control of Japanese in Davao and their unlimited acquisition of land. The issue became a national concern so that Davao was made into a chartered city with appointive officials instead of elective officials." Many feared at the time that if officials were elected, Japanese-supported candidates would win.
In the '30s, Japanese control of Davao was said to be complete in Guinga district because they were already dictating both the economic and political life of the town. That Japan at that time was already on its way to become a world power also stoked those fears.
Shown in the other exhibits of Japanese life in the city are pictures of the first Japanese tycoons who made a killing in abaca plantations. These tycoons were said to be "responsible for giving recognition to abaca (manila hemp) as the world's strongest cordage fiber in the pre-war era."
The gallery also charted how the agribusiness economic life of the city was largely influenced by the plantation economy propagated by the Americans. It said that by 1912, some 50 American plantations had already been put up in choice lands around the Davao Gulf and that these American planters hired workers from indigenous tribes.
But later, however, the Americans found the work habits of the Lumads as unsatisfactory so that many of them were forced to recruit laborers from Luzon and the Visayas while others later engaged the services of Japanese laborers and contract workers for the plantations.
Interestingly, many of these Japanese workers had worked on the construction of the Kennon Road in Baguio. When their contracts expired, they were brought to Davao, where they became the first Japanese workers in the plantations.
Mention was also made of a Japanese man, Kyosaburo Ohta, who is said to be the agent or contractor to hire the said Japanese workers for the American plantations.
Ohta opened a store in Davao City and later started an abaca plantation of his own, paving the way for the Japanese dominance of plantation holdings and trade and commerce in the city. Little wonder then that there was a time in history, in the 1920s, when Davao was referred to as "Davaokuo" or Little Tokyo.
Perhaps because of this historial kinship, the Japanese are still drawn to Davao City even to this day. According to Department of Tourism data, most foreign visitors to the city are Japanese. (Cheryll D. Fiel/davaotoday.com)

PPA allots P134.8 million for SouthMin port dev’t
Davao City (20 February) -- Firm on its 2010 corporate vision of attaining global maritime leadership in at least 10 port2s of the country, the Philippine Ports Authority allocates PhP 134.87 million to Port District Office-Southern Mindanao (PPO-SoMin) for its various port projects in 2007.
“We share these milestones to our investors, shippers, cargo handling operators, and our general public to stress how PPA seriously takes its mandate within and beyond our borders,” PDO-SoMin Port District Manager Abdussabor Sawadjaan conveys during a recent senio88r staff meeting.
Hinged mostly on upgrading facilities to international standards, 30 out of the 39 projects are considered new flagship programs. The rest cover major projects started in 2006 which are now in various stages of completion.
New ventures
A strong bastion of countryside trade, PPA’s pipeline projects this year include the highly anticipated PhP 63.9 M worth development funding for the Port of Mati and the municipal ports of Banay-Banay and San Isidro (all in Davao Oriental) and Babak, Island Garden City of Samal (Davao del Norte).
To further boost the regional economy, the Maco Port, located in Compostela Valley Province which serves as an alternative route for wooden chips export of the Davao Region will receive PhP 24.93 M for the second phase of its Port Development package.
Also commencing within the year is the much awaited PhP 150 M modern Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) at the Port of Davao.
The PTB, although long been a priority development concern of the Davao Port, has constantly faced delays due to long-standing serial negotiations with informal settlers occupying the intended construction site in the southern area of Sasa Wharf.
PPA Head Office also recently approved the release of PhP 17.75 M for the purchase of the relocation site. Final agreements with the remaining identified illegal settlers will expectedly rollout the port’s world-class PTB project.
PMO-General Santos will likewise begin the construction of its PhP 50 M modern PTB. Its passenger terminal, to date, is located is located temporarily in one of its transit sheds for cargoes.
Once completed, the new PTB is set to direct and organize passenger traffic more efficiently and increase safety compliance by demarcating cargo/operations areas from the passenger area. It also bolsters port security measures, particularly its adherence to the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.
PMO-Cotabato, on one hand, will undertake the estimated PhP 89.75 M construction of its Terminal Operations Office and Port Police Building and will pursue its civil works (access road) project.
Kalamansig, a TMO under PMO-Cotabato will also launch its reclamation project and construction of its administrative building.
Corporate funds
The overall 2007 project subsidy of PhP 134.87 M is only about 11 percent of the total budget of PhP 1.2 billion intended for SoMin ports based on PPA’s Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) projects for 2006 to 2008.
Such does not include a separate PhP 31.23 M allocated this year to address port maintenance expenditures.
On top of the CAPEX and repairs and maintenance budget for SoMin, PPA Head Office also undertakes the implementation of the PhP 1, 178.5 M worth of locally-funded port expansion projects in the baseports of Davao (PhP 398.5), General Santos (PhP 397.5) and Zamboanga (PhP 382.5 M). These projects are scheduled to end by early 2008. (PPA Port District Office-SoMin. (PIA XI) [top]

Three Davao festivals listed in tourism program
by Prix D Banzon
Davao City (20 February) -- Three of Davao’s crowd-drawing festivals have been included in the government’s year long tourism promotion.
Department of Tourism (DOT) XI regional director Sonia Garcia at the Tagum City government sponsored press conference at SM City Davao said they need new festivals to be promoted and this should be as distinct and unique from the others.
“Hindi dapat pare pareho ang activities ng ating festival if we are to attract tourists,” she said.
She named the Kadayawan Festival of Davao City, Tagum City’s Musikahan Festival and the Caracoles Festival of the Island Garden City of Samal as the three Davao’s top festivals.
“These festivals project something that can become world class and could bring in many visitors to the area,” she said.
While Musikahan Festival will be celebrated on February 20 to 25, Tagum City Tourism Council president Alma Uy said they aim to develop the festival that could attract even international visitors.
She said in this year’s festival they will be bringing in the Madrigal Singers even as she said that through the event they also branch out to developing talents of which some 1,300 students had availed of the program.
Uy also said that they also consider arts and music blending with the industry as they also work on attracting investors to come into the city.
Garcia meanwhile said that unique festivals like the Musikahan are an attraction especially to foreigners.
She cited for instance that a music festival in Europe would rake in thousands and thousands of tourists.
“This kind of festival could be a potential because it earns the support not only from the city government but also the neighboring municipalities within Davao del Norte,” she said.
She said the need to development new things is really a must to move up to the world class level. (PIA XI) [top]

boju February 20th, 2007, 05:47 AM Crocodile park attracts tourists in Davao
02/19/2007 | 11:27 PM
Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us A different kind of park in Davao has become a visitor's favorite.
Apart from pomelo, durian and monkey-eating eagles, tourists are now associating Davao with crocodile.
The Davao Crocodile Park has been attracting hordes of local and foreign tourists. It is a place where you can see different sizes and shapes of the reptile.
And on Saturdays, you may even see a 12-year-old US-born Charlie Evan feeding the crocodile and helping caretaker Danilo Cabaguio clean the reptiles' home.
The crocodile park is is not only taking care of crocodiles. It's mission also includes propagating the endangered carnivorous reptiles.
The park opened in 1995 yet with only 20 crocodiles. Now, it already has 279 crocodiles attracting the attention of park goers.
The caretaker says the crocodiles are more active at night when the park is deserted.
Davao has long been known for its sweet seedless pomelo and delicious durian.
It is also home to different species of eagle, including the man-eating eagles. - GMANews.TV (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/31293/Crocodile-park-attracts-tourists-in-Davao)

paulkrps February 20th, 2007, 01:20 PM i'm kind of like pissed off with these rules of english and filipino only. stifling to the point of being ridiculous with having those translations, etc. all these rules takes away all the freshness and spontaneity of what ssc was once. if they were asking if those other forums can do it why can't we mentality, i beg to differ. what the point of wanting to be doing what others are? i will still be in touch with the dabawenyo forumers especially for our davao meet. anyway, great and good to have known you guys, i bid adieu.
