Mayor: Samal-Davao bridge might bring more woes than gains

A PROPOSED bridge linking Davao City and the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) may bring more problems that benefits, Igacos Mayor Rogelio Antalan said during Monday's Kapehan sa Dabaw.

The plan to build a bridge to link the two cities to hasten travel has been proposed more than a decade ago and highlighted in a study made by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007

But Antalan said that with the construction of a multi-million-peso bridge that would link the island city to the mainland, informal settlers and other adverse effects of development might plague the city.

Aside from informal settlers, Antalan also fears that prostitution and illegal drugs would proliferate in the island.

The identified "bridge site" is in the area where the present ferry is located, which in the Davao City side is surrounded by settlements that abound with gangs and gangster activities.

Antalan said if ever there will be development in the island city, it should not be contradictory to the maintenance of environmental balance.

The island city, he said, is aiming for an ecologically viable form of development.

"The people of Samal have not yet decided as to what they really want," the mayor said.

Antalan, who is now on last term as mayor, added that he will not be running for any government position in the coming May elections. (CPM)

imo. I DONT THINK WE NEED PEOPLE LIKE HIM WHO ARE AFRAID OF CHANGE. The bridge is not the evil, it's the people. With or without the bridge, prostitution will flourish for as long as people are not given economic options to live a decent life ..... Mr. Antalan, go and retire

Councilor asks Brunei Sultan to consider DC in P500-M Halal plant
By Carmelito Q. Francisco

A city councilor has asked the government of Brunei Darussalam to consider the city for its plan of setting up of a Halal food processing plant. Councilor Peter Laviña, city council committee on trade and commerce, wrote Brunei ’s leader, Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, offering the city as area for the P500 million investment. In his letter, Laviña cited that the city, being the largest in Mindanao and the “de-facto” center of the four-country Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East Asean Growth Area, is also the most competitive metropolitan city in the country based on the study conducted by the Asian Institute of Management. “It ( Davao City ) has excellent food supply of Halal meat products. The city has a Halal Food Council,” said Laviña in his letter, pointing out that the city, as all parts of Mindanao , is also free from the food-and-mouth disease and bird flu virus. The councilor also mentioned in his letter that the city has a good supply of human resources and the city government offers good incentives to prospective investors. Last week, in a story published in Business World, Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap mentioned that Brunei was considering investing P500 million for a Halal manufacturing plant. Yap said that he and an official of the Brunei government initially discussed the plan as he even invited officials of the Brunei government to visit the country to see for themselves its potentials as investment area for Halal food products. Muslims only eat Halal food, or food products that pass through Islamic mechanisms before they are made available for customers. Late last year, a group of investments in the two countries have initially discussed the plan to come up with a Halal company in the hope of filling in the void left by Halal world suppliers that have suffered from the bird flu virus. Business representatives of the two countries decided to come up with the plan after the plan of establishing a company composed of representatives from the four countries in the sub-regional group failed to take off. Asked on the proposal, Vicente Lao, who represented Mindanao in the discussion of the plan to come up with a company that will be composed of investors from the Philippines and Brunei, said there was no final structure yet. However, Lao said he was hopeful that the two countries will finally be able to set up the company so that it can penetrate the Halal markets in the world, particularly the Middle East . Based on the estimates of the office of Yap, the Halal food market is a $150 billion industry with about 1.8 million consumers in 112 countries. Two years ago, business leaders of the sub-regional group initiated the formation of a company that was supposed to supply Halal food products not just within the sub-region, but the international markets. Under the agreement, the Philippines, being free from the bird flu virus, would take charge of the growing of poultry products, while Indonesia will supply the feeds requirements considering that corn, the main chicken feed, is cheaper in that country. Malaysia will take charge of the processing, while Brunei will provide the Halal certification considering that its certification mechanism is recognized worldwide. But the company failed to take off considering that it was hounded by problems, among them policies of the four governments. One problem was the refusal of the Philippine government for poultry raisers to import corn from Indonesia on the pretext that this would expose the industry to the bird flu virus. However, Romeo Serra, Mindanao Business Council chair and a plant pathologist, dismissed the concern of the Philippine government, saying it was highly improbable for the virus to live in such a condition.

Samal to set up economic zone
By Carmelito Q. Francisco

The Island Garden City of Samal has started drafting the plan to set up a P20 billion economic zone and free port as the Lower House approved the proposal just recently. Cleto Gales Jr., city administrator of the nearby city, said the city government has started considering the setting up of an international free port that will complement the economic zone. Gales said the city government will come up with a technical working group that will draw the final plan for the economic zone. Gales said the international free port will serve as the docking area of goods that will be brought to the economic zone. “Most probably the economic zone will be considered in a place with less population,” he said, saying that the zone will also complement the plan of establishing a bridge that will connect the two cities. The city government has the difficulty in coming up with a comprehensive plan for the economic zone because the Upper House has yet to approve the proposal, Gales said. However, if approved, the proposal will call for the creation of the economic zone authority in six months that will monitor the implementation of the programs of development, he added. He said the city government already did a workshop on the impact of the economic zone to the development of the island city. Unless the proposal is approved, the plan will still not have the specific features needed for the concrete plan, Gales said. “Our idea now is to come up with a complete feasibility study for the proposal,” he said. Gales hopes that the Senate will approve the proposal before the new set of lawmakers gets elected in the May 11 elections. The economic zone will also complement the 224-hectare mariculture park of the city government, an area where high-value fish varieties have been grown for both local and foreign market, he said. The mariculture park, which already earned the city government several awards, has become among the most attractive investment area in the city which is better known for its resort that its investment areas. “That (economic zone) would even be a boost to the mariculture park, because in terms of access to market, it will already have a point of entry and exit for its products,” he said. Filed by Davao del Norte Rep. Antonio Floirendo Jr., the economic zone bill proposes for the establishment of an economic zone similar to those found in Hong Kong, Singapore and Labuan in Malaysia . The economic zone, based on the bill, will be a “self-sustaining industrial, commercial, tourist/recreational, banking, investment and financial center” under the management of the authority. The bill also proposes for the extending of incentives to investors who will locate in the economic zone and that they will also be provided with leniency in terms of importing the goods that are to be sold. Among the tax incentives will be relaxing tariff duties on imported goods, the proposal said. The proposal also states that the economic zone, through the authority, will have the power to acquire lands, through sale or other legal means that will form part of the zone.

I'll say it again: the people of IGACOS are confused with what directions to take for the future of their City.

Do they want a tourist city, a garden city? Or a free zone with industrial areas? Could they exist side-by-side?

With the bridge, you could now say goodbye to the future of tourism and ecotourism of IGACOS. How do you plan to protect all of the Island's natural assets if you cannot control influx of people and development because of the magnet that will be created by the bridge?

And I think it would be a mistake to compare IGACOS with Mactan because its natural assets are nothing compared to IGACOS. Samal has waterfalls, bat colony, coraline-limestone hills, caves, white sand beaches, dive sites, etc. that need to be protected. If we are willing to give these all up to uncontrolled development, then push the bridge.

If these thoughts are suspected of being anti-development, then I would think mali. Think of Pearl Farm and other resorts in the Island. The absence of a bridge is no hindrance to development. The 20-Year Tourism Master Plan for Samal Islands would support this.

Now if the government can make all measures in place to arrest this anticipated problems way ahead of the bridge, I may consider the bridge. Kung hindi, goodbye Samal Island.

But prostitution comes with the territory. You cannot stop it. Control, regulate, baka pwede pa.

Tourist arrivals in RP seen to increase 8-10% this year
By Nelson C. Bagaforo and Carlo P. Mallo

THE government sees an eight to 10 percent growth in tourist arrivals in 2007, Tourism Secretary Joseph Durano said over the weekend.

Arrivals last year reached a record 2.84 million, and the goal is to increase that to as many as 3.2 million this year, he said.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007

"In the medium term, 60 percent of our tourists will continue to come from northeast Asia," Durano told reporters following a business forum in Manila.

In Davao City, Durano assured a bright year ahead for industry players in the city.

"Year 2007 will be a good one for the tourism industry in Davao and the Department of Tourism (DOT) will ensure that the city will get a piece of the action," he told tourism stakeholders at the opening ceremonies of the 1st Davao International Travel, Tours, Leisure & Lifestyle Exhibition or the Davao Travel Show 2007 on Friday.

Last year, Durano said South Korea narrowly beat the US as the country's top source of visitors. Japan was the third largest, while China was the fastest growing.

The Philippines aims to attract five million foreign visitors by 2010.

Durano said the latest data show that tourism accounts for less than 3 percent of gross domestic product (GDP). The goal is to raise that to 5 percent by 2010.

Spending a daily average of $90 a day per visitor, tourism last year injected about $2.7 billion into the economy, Durano said.

He also expressed optimism in the position of Davao as the next tourism destination in the Asean region as two direct inbound and outbound flights are slated to begin this year.

Durano made mention of the flights connecting the city directly with Hong Kong, China and Inchon, South Korea.

He expressed support to the full liberalization of air routes in the city, saying it is one way to boost tourism industry in the region.

Meanwhile, tourism committee chair Councilor Susabel Reta said the Davao Travel Show 2007 is another boost to the tourism industry.

"The mere presence of the exhibitors from the various places shows that there is nothing wrong with Davao City," Reta said.

For Councilor Peter Laviña, the event proves the potential of the city in the tourism industry.

He also added that it is a good activity in promoting not only the city, but also the whole of Mindanao.

The Malaysian Consul, Hussein Bakar, also believes that the event promotes Davao as a strong contender as a travel and convention destination in the BIMP-Eaga sub-region.

BIMP-Eaga tourism council chair Mary Ann Montemayor expressed confidence that the exposure of Davao City through the travel shoe is a giant leap for the tourism industry and has aggressively taken its stand in gearing the city as the next travel destination.

"This is a manifestation of the good cooperation between the government and private sector in the promotion of tourism in the city," Councilor Mabel Sunga-Acosta told Sun.Star Davao.

She added that the event was a welcome development and an encouragement for tourists to visit the city.

Yup, I'm anticipating for this bridge. It can shorten travel time and what's best, it can make things easier. Basi'g naa pod siyay ferry business from Davao maong dili siya kahimo ana? Three Davao festivals listed in tourism program
by Suzette @ 6:57 pm. Filed under News, Travel, Place

by Prix D Banzon

Davao City — Three of Davao’s crowd-drawing festivals have been included in the government’s year long tourism promotion.

Department of Tourism (DOT) XI regional director Sonia Garcia at the Tagum City government sponsored press conference at SM City Davao said they need new festivals to be promoted and this should be as distinct and unique from the others.

“Hindi dapat pare pareho ang activities ng ating festival if we are to attract tourists,” she said.

She named the Kadayawan Festival of Davao City, Tagum City’s Musikahan Festival and the Caracoles Festival of the Island Garden City of Samal as the three Davao’s top festivals.

“These festivals project something that can become world class and could bring in many visitors to the area,” she said.

While Musikahan Festival will be celebrated on February 20 to 25, Tagum City Tourism Council president Alma Uy said they aim to develop the festival that could attract even international visitors.

She said in this year’s festival they will be bringing in the Madrigal Singers even as she said that through the event they also branch out to developing talents of which some 1,300 students had availed of the program.

Uy also said that they also consider arts and music blending with the industry as they also work on attracting investors to come into the city.

Garcia meanwhile said that unique festivals like the Musikahan are an attraction especially to foreigners.

She cited for instance that a music festival in Europe would rake in thousands and thousands of tourists.

“This kind of festival could be a potential because it earns the support not only from the city government but also the neighboring municipalities within Davao del Norte,” she said.

She said the need to development new things is really a must to move up to the world class level. (PIA XI)

Feature: Tagum as country’s major source of coffee
by Suzette @ 2:53 pm. Filed under Business, Place

By Mai Gevera

Davao City — The known banana city is surprisingly revealed as the major source of all Robusta coffee planting materials used in the Philippines.

This was a data given by the leading coffee company, Nescafe, as it held its last leg of the Nescafe Classic First Pick launching in Davao City.

Maureen Guiao, Nescafe’s Marketing Promotions and Events confirmed that the company is sourcing out large volume of coffee seedlings from its coffee farm in Tagum city, just a few kilometers from Davao.

“We have a Nestle Experimental and Demo Farm in Tagum where most of the company’s products are being sourced out,” she said.

The coffee leader is involved in sourcing coffee from around 100,000 Filipino farmers and about 300,000 farm workers in the Philippines who are in some way involved in the planting, harvesting or processing and trading of coffee.

January is the month considered as the first harvest season for coffee and coffee farmers realized that the first ripe and red coffee cherries picked during the beginning of the harvest season especially when carefully selected and roasted produce a unique and flavorful coffee.

This has pushed Nescafe to package and produce another Nescafe Classic First Pick limited edition that offers coffee-lovers a taste of the unique flavor of the first ripe, red coffee cherries.

In a statement made by Nestle’s business executive manager Bruno Olierhoek, he said that there is truly magical about the first coffee harvest of the year and Filipinos get the chance to taste a truly world-class coffee which is only available in the Philippines.

Added to the list of benefits the product gets to offer is the anti-oxidants which are naturally present in coffee. It has tiny molecules that help neutralize the body’s free radicals that attack the cell’s membranes and cause oxidative stress that may lead to cancer and other degenerative diseases. (PIA XI)

'Peaceful entry' of foreign investors in Diwalwal seen
By Ben O. Tesiorna

THE regional office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is hopeful that the entry of foreign investors in the 8,100-hectare Diwalwal Mineral Reservation Area would be peaceful.

DENR Regional Director Ricardo Calderon said unlike before when the National Government was insensitive to the plight and demand of small-scale miners, the new administrators of Philippine Mining Development Corporation went to Diwalwal to see for themselves the real situation and sentiments of the miners there.

"Their plans now are different. They are now more sensitive to the small-scale miners and it's a good thing. Their approach is more peaceful," Calderon said.

He confirmed that the government has excluded the 729-hectare Mt. Diwata gold-rush area from the public bidding in order to appease thousands of miners in Diwalwal who earlier vowed to resist entry of foreign mining corporations in the area "until the last drop of our blood."

At present, Calderon said, the biggest stumbling block in the entry of foreign investors in Diwalwal is the peace and order situation in the area.

"That is why Mayor Rodrigo Duterte's statement last week that he will fully support the government's plan of action in Diwalwal was really a big thing," Calderon said.

During the Regional Peace and Order Council meeting last week, Duterte, who chairs the council, said that if he will have his way he would implement the full force of the law and not let anyone get in his way, even the New People's Army.

But Mt. Diwata barangay captain Franco Tito thinks otherwise as he reiterated that Duterte is not needed in the gold-rush mountain of Diwalwal since there is a stable peace and order situation in the area.

Tito said that Duterte's style of governance is not needed in Diwalwal. He suggested, instead, for Duterte to look into the spate of killings in the whole of Monkayo rather than focus on Diwalwal alone.

The village chief said they are also not against the entry of the government in Diwalwal for as long as they do not bring in foreign mining investors in the area.

Lufthansa eyes Davao market
By Carlo P. Mallo

OFFICIALS of German airline Lufthansa were in Davao City over the weekend as the airline company took part in the recently concluded Davao Travel Show 2007.

Headed by the general manager for the Philippines Christopher Zimmer, Lufthansa participated in the three-day long event in order to "get a picture" of the tourism market in Davao City.

"We are basically here to do a feasibility study on the market of Davao City," Zimmer told Sun.Star Davao.

The airline, he said, also hopes to gain a better perspective of the city.

He said the Davao International Airport is one of the best in the country.

"The airport does not have to be reconfigured to fit the standards of Lufthansa," Zimmer said, implying the possibility of having Lufthansa service flights going in and out of Davao.

The airline also wishes to strengthen its presence in Davao City, as it considers the city as a hub for Philippine tourism.

"I would like to assure Davao and the Mindanao market of Lufthansa's commitment to provide reliable, comfortable, convenient, and a wide range of on-time travel options for business and leisure," Zimmer added.

Lufthansa has been serving the Philippines since 1986 and has a daily flight from Manila to Frankfurt.

If i were their management, dapat simulan na now kc we're positioning our city as one of the country's key player in medical tourism. Sayang naman...some of the hospitals in the city are currently expanding - (Davao Doc, uhmmm may expansion ba sa DMC?, when i checked San Pedro - iba na ang facade nila - bagong ligo eheheheh). Ang daming neigboring cities such as Palau, Manado in Indonesia, and people from other provinces of Indonesia ang pumupunta sa Davao for such purpose.

Talking about foreigners, I was just wondering..diba the Consulate of Indonesia (if that's how we call it) is located sa Ecoland? how come, last weekend, I saw a new building - consular office din daw ng Indonesia dun sa may shortcut papuntang NCCC? it's also a huge building.

My philosophy on the subject issue is simple: Your eyes feast on Samal's awesome beauty with an empty stomach or enjoy Samal to the hilt with your hard-earned bucks from the businesses around. Davao is in NO position to decline/parry any developments in that magnitude. Davao will benefit from it, no question. It's a deal!

I'm so sorry sa ibang Dabawenyo friends natin but I am pro-bridge of a bridge. IMO, this will benefit both Davao and Samal cities. Regarding the environment concerns, eternal vigilance is needed. I think you are talking to that building in Tulip Drive that was razed by fire in 2003. That was the training centre-cum-dormitory of visiting Indonesian dignitaries..according to my mole.

I see, so it's not a long wait a guess for them to service Davao-Switzerland (?!) with their own aircraft at that. I've heard, they are the most expensive airline around who have no qualms pampering their own FAs. I've seen them checking in at a huge, 6 star hotel here and boy, did they look so gorgeous.

... this i still have to experience, those flying the europe-asia stretch are mostly grannies in look

davao-switzerland.... this should be serviced by SwissAir (now defunct, i remember being the last few passengers to fly that airline, i belonged to the last batch of passengers flown out of the US after the sept. 11 attack :ohno: )

- two residential condominium buildings with 5 floors each. Instead of building a one - 10 storey condo (since malapad naman ang space natin sa Davao) they decided to put up two buildings in this upcoming community complete with amenities and landscapes.

Surely, the first residential condominium project in Mindanao owned and developed by the giant developer - DMCI.

Davao City goes into organic farming

By Jeffrey M. Tupas
Inquirer
Last updated 02:30am (Mla time) 02/28/2007

DAVAO CITY—After banning the use of aerial spraying in banana plantations, the city council launched another campaign for safe food production.

Recently, the Sangguniang Panlungsod passed a resolution urging farmers to adopt environmentally friendly practices by shifting to organic pesticides and fertilizers.

Councilor Condrado Baluran, chair of the agriculture committee, said there was now a need for farmers to practice alternative farming methods.

“We know the dangers, all the harmful effects of these synthetic chemicals to people’s health and the environment,” he said.

Baluran said many people were now recognizing the environmental costs of agriculture.

“(These include) the deteriorating quality of drinking water and soil. The impact of agriculture on landscape and wildlife is increasing,” Baluran said in the resolution.

Baluran said the resolution reflected the city government’s support for organic agriculture.

“We would like to see more and more farmers shifting from their current practice to the safer one,” Baluran said.

The resolution, Baluran said, aimed to “promote, support and strengthen organic agriculture.”

There are currently around 2,000 organic farmers in the city, with around 300 hectares of farmlands devoted to organic food production.

Philippines to hold ASEAN ministerial meeting in Manila in July
Source: http://english.people.com.cn/200702/28/eng20070228_352921.html

The Philippine government has finally decided to hold the 40th Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) ministerial meeting in Manila in July and not in Davao, the biggest city in Mindanao, a senior Foreign Affairs (DFA) official said Tuesday.

DFA Undersecretary for Policy Erlinda Basilio said Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo relayed the information that the ASEAN ministerial meeting and the ASEAN Regional Forum, which will be attended by the United States, Russia, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, the European Union, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the regional bloc's several other dialogue partners, will be held at the Philippine International Conventional Center in Pasay City, Metro Manila.

"Secretary Romulo told us that the AMM (ASEAN ministerial meeting) and related meetings will be in Manila as scheduled," Basilio told a press briefing.

In a tentative schedule provided by the DFA, the meeting will start on July 25 and will end on Aug. 2.

The Philippine government was reportedly eyeing Davao in Mindanao as the venue for the meeting.

Sources said the government wants to showcase a supposedly stable peace and security situation in the Mindanao region through Davao, which is described as one of the country's progressive cities.

However, the DFA is reportedly apprehensive on the plan because Davao, which is the third largest city of the Philippines, may not be able to accommodate a huge foreign delegation as it lacks adequate meeting facilities and a convention center.

At the end of the meeting, the Philippines will turn over the chairmanship of the ASEAN to Singapore.

The Philippines abruptly postponed an ASEAN summit meeting in Cebu, the second largest city of the country, in December last year, citing the threat of a looming typhoon. But inadequate security and lack of facilities were widely believed to be the reasons behind the postponement.

IMHO, this is good news. this will further strengthen the bid of our local bizmen to build a spanking convention center. gaisano (quimpo lot), sm lot, nccc (hope it will be at the adjacent lot), ayala/floreindo lot at bajada, RCC, anywhere as long as it will rise at mushroom speed. we need it first. :) if only the sultan of brunei finally decides to re-open samal casino resort...

^^ it's a whack on the horse's ass news for these local biz groups actually. i'd rather build that convention center first because a succesful hosting of any event without that facility will further put the plan to build one down the drain. filipinos are "ningas kugon" in nature...

Chinese New Year ushers more tourist arrivals
by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (27 February) -- As early as January 2007 the country enjoyed a 20 percent increase in visitors negating pessimistic projections with this year's Chinese New Year celebration in February in which the government forecasted a negative growth in tourist arrivals.

Secretary Joseph Durano on Friday who graced the opening of the Davao International Travel, Tours, Leisure and Lifestyle Exhibition at SM City said the celebration of Chinese New Year would indicate more tourist arrivals with 20 percent to 30 percent increase every celebration.

"With the trend of more visitors coming in even at the first month of the year I am confident that this year is again another good year," he said.

Davao City he said gets the piece of a positive year with more new international flights coming in.

He announced the HongKong Davao City route and the Ichung-Davao City route that could boost the inbound tourism market of Davao.

"We need to exert in the inbound to also balance the outbound," he said.

He also said that the number of travel agencies are growing but with more challenging tasks ahead.

Durano mentioned that one of these challenges is the coming election.

"It is incumbent on us to make sure that it will not weaken but strengthen our democracy. We need to reinforce the given that we have and that we put in mind that elections is not good only for political bickering," he said.

Meanwhile Durano said that in the Philippine tourism, Davao City was named as the newest international destination of the country.

He said that the Davao City hosting of the Asean Tourism Forum was still remembered during the recent ATF held in Singapore which opened up a new chapter of the city.

Among others it opened Davao City to traffic from mainland China where new international flights will be opened soon.

Welcome to Davao

The Tourism Capital of Mindanao

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/dvoadv.jpg

Davao City

Endowed with a variety of picturesque landscape, Davao's topography dazzles: fruit plantation and orchid farms mantle volcano-fed hills and valleys. Virgin forests nurture rare wildlife. Coral highest peak mirror flat water. And the country's highest peak magnificently lords over the hinterland.

Just enchanting is its brilliant tapestry of harmony, woven from the diverse cultural threads of its people. In Davao, the contemporary fuses with the traditional as migrant settlers from all over the the country co-exist in peace with a fairly large expatriate community and numerous ethnic tribes who continue to live as they did centuries ago.

Davao is an anchor destination and one of the 7,000 times more islands that make up the Philippine archipelago. It is a natural haven for both sedate and daring pursuit.

Island Garden City of Samal

A coastal paradise located at the heart of Davao Gulf. A Haven to those seeking solace in an unspoiled and natural ambiance and to those who are in quest for great adventure and extreme challenges with nature, its white and pristine beaches and diverse natural attractions combined with the warmth and hospitality of its people spell out its potential to be a world-class eco-tourism destination in this part of Southeastern Mindanao.

Aside from its awesome coral garden, one may not see a floral garden in the island as yet. But as a new city, the Island Garden City of Samal is a large economic base, and an international gateway, IGaCoS is the best place for would-be investors. it boasts of a superior quality island beach area, large areas of land suitable for development, and a highly receptive local government and community.

The Island Garden City of Samal is one of the three (3) cities of Davao del Norte. its unique birth was made out of the merger of the three (3) former municipalities of the island namely, Babak, Samal and Kaputian. The official name is Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCos). The name speaks for its and for what a place is destined to become - an island cluster, emerging to become the international center and financial district for the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines - East ASEAN Growth Area) as laid out in the Davao Integrated Development Program (DIDP).

Davao Del Norte

Welcome to Davao del Norte. Touted as Davao Region's Agriculture, Culture and Ecology (ACE) Tourism Destination, Davao del Norte holds the distinction of having vast expanse of banana plantations in the region. Blessed with rich fertile land and other natural resources and the fact that it is located in a typoon-free belt made Davao del Norte not only productive but also charmingly attractive to investors and tourists alike.

The socio-demography of theprovince presents as a good case of multi-culturalism where the Indigenous People (Lumad), Muslims and Christians live together in a developing social atmosphere. The Ata-Manobo tribe for example all over this predominantly Christian-inhabited province is a living testimony of a wonderful synergy that forges harmonious assimilative process while respecting the uniqueness of their cultural differences. Here, there is unity in diversity.

Tagum City is one of the province's three component cities. Its strategic location and the dynamism of economic activity make for an ideal investor's haven. It is not only the seat of the Provincial Government but the latest establishment of the New Christ the King Cathedral even made more famous for its Giant Wooden Rosary attracts pilgrims and presents a certain religious truth that is, socio-eco-political integrity is sustained by people's deep sense of spirituality.

The Island Garden City of Samal is promoted as an island of Davao Gulf or mistakenly a seascape of Davao City. As to this date, the islands comprising the Island Garden City of Samal still form part of the territorial integrity of Davao del Norte. Thus, the province promoted it as an island destination to complement the province's highland attractions. It is safer then to state it that way. We therefore take pride of its fantastic dive sites, marine parks, white sandy beaches and world-class resorts.

Panabo City has two transnational wharves operated by two giant banana companies namely: TADECO and STANFILCO. With these facilities banana has become big business in Davao del Norte to supply the lucrative markets of Japan, Korea, Red China, ASEAN neighbors and the Middle East. More and more of our highland communities are now developed into "sweet" Cavendish because existing banana plantations located at the flat alluvial plains are not enough to meet the continuing demands.

Equally endowed with nature's bountiful resources, the eight (8) Inland municipalities of Davao del Norte do not only produce agricultural products but also have their scenic spots and tourist destinations. Kapalong and the newly created Municipality of San Isidro have hundreds of documented caves and have already earned for them a moniker SPELUNKERS HAVEN in Mindanao during the 3rd National Caving Congress last three years ago. If the province of Palawan is made popular by its subterranean river, Davao del Norte is also blest with its BUCAY CAVE - an underground waterfalls. Sto. Tomas prides itself with Ecology Park for their Waste Management Program.

New Corella has cascading waterfalls and mountain view parks. Braulio E. Dujali has rice granaries. And Asuncion has discovered the secret cure of AIDS - the BFAD certified production of VIRGIN COCONUT OLD. While Carmen is reckoned with her World War II historical significance, the BATTLE OF ISING.

All of these man-made and natural wonders are what made Davao del Norte an Agriculture, Culture and Ecology (ACE) Tourism DEstination in DAVAO Region and in the world.

Davao Del Sur

Sprawled along the shores of Southeastern Mindanao, Davao Del Sur is a place of natural wonders and rarities. It boasts of the country's highest peak - Mt. Apo, the most prized Philippine orchid like the Vanda Sanderiana, some of the exotic fruits and the endangered Philippine Eagle.

Davao del Sur is home to a host of ethnic groups whose culture and way of life have been preserved. These are the Bagobos, the Mandayas, the Mansakas, the Atas, the Kalagans, the Tagakaolos and the Mangguangans. Their arts and crafts are on display in museums and shops.

There is a wide choice of white sand beaches and resorts. In the city, there are numerous hotels and inns. Dining is good and varied. Nightlife is fun.

Some of the popular sports activities are golf, water sports and mountain climbing.

Davao Oriental

The verdant forests and blue crystal clear waters serving as backdrop to the winding roads are what greet you upon entering this quiet coastal Province set at the back end of the country.

Perhaps the thought of its backdoor and corner end setting makes one wonder how life in this Province is catching up on the fast-changing trends of the urban centers.

For those who have not set foot on the province of Davao Oriental, this is the easternmost tip of the country and this is where the sun shines first. By rough estimate, sunrise here comes eight minutes earlier than sunrise in Manila, or three minutes earlier than sunrise in Davao City.

If one thinks the hours here are slow and the days are lagging behind. Think again.

Compostela Valley

Compostela Valley is blessed with nature's magnificent work of art. It brims with natural attractions like beaches, waterfalls, forests, mountain ranges, caves, lakes, rivers, hot and cold springs.. all found in the province.

The province is also proud of its people and cultural heritage... a varied blend of ethnicity and dominance. To be in Compostela Valley is to experience a blend of sight and sound that defines a place and a people, pulsing with life yet reserved in spirit.

The Provincial Government believes in marketing tourism responsibly. ComValeños want you to explore and revel on nature's finest without destroying the environment.

Our choices within the province are almost limitless. We believe that we have something that caters to everyone's enthusiasm... all waiting for the adventurous spirit in you. Thus, we see our province as an Eco-Adventure Tourism Destination.

International Travel Show in Davao
by Prix D Banzon

Davao City -- The Travel Show has finally come to Davao after the organizers agreed to hold it in the prime city of the South with over a hundred exhibitors representing products and services from all over the world.

Art Boncato, past president of Davao Tourism Association (DATA) and marketing manager of The Marco Polo Davao in an interview on Wednesday said the organizers were convinced to bring the show to Davao.

He said the travel show were usually held in Manila and Cebu and because of persistent negotiations with Davao’s tourism players Davao will now play host to the show, a break from its traditional venues.

He said about 72 exhibitors have already confirmed among them are 30 players from Manado, Indonesia and 10 from Singapore.

He said it is an international travel, tours, leisure and lifestyle exhibition where tour operators will showcase their products in a four-day show at SM City Davao Entertainment Plaza.

“This will reinforce the efforts of tourism players here to promote Davao as an international destination,” he said.

He said their commitment to promote Davao in other international events never stopped and in fact their hotel was the lone representative to the recent Asean Tourism Forum in Singapore.

As the 2006 host of ATF, he said Davao City was well remembered in this year’s gathering of tourism players at the Lion City.

Davao he said already has become a known destination to the industry players from the different foreign countries that participated in the 2007 ATF.

“This is an indicator that the city already had slowly been known and this has to be sustained for us to meet our goal of luring more tourists to come to our city,” he said.

Highlights of the Travel Show are discounts on international packages, up to 50 percent discount on on-site purchases, free accommodations and tickets, special inter-island packages available, hourly presentation and games.

Products to be featured are accommodation, adventure tour operators, airlines (international and domestic), attractions audio visual and technical suppliers, car rental companies, computer hardware/software credit/charge card companies, cruise lines, dive operators, entertainment, gold clubs, government tourism offices, hotel chains, hotels and resorts, inbound travel operators, international tourism organizations, large format printers, malls and shopping centers, manpower services, national tourism operators, pos system, presentation facilities, restaurants, bars and clubs, security system, spas and health clubs, sports clubs, suppliers of gifts and premiums, theme parks, trade associations/publications, media, travel agencies, travel management companies and travel related suppliers.

City hosts travel show, Feb 23-25
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

AFTER hosting the Asean Tourism Forum (ATF) last year, Davao City will again be at the forefront of a big international travel event this month.

Konkordans Destination Management Company, an event management firm, announced that tourism players are united once again to ensure the success of the three-day Davao Travel and Lifestyle Show at the SM Entertainment Plaza, starting on February 23.

The show, which is open to the public for free, will be graced by Department of Tourism Secretary Joseph Durano, who has already confirmed his presence during the opening ceremony at 6 p.m. on February 23.

Art Boncato, sales and promotions director of Marco Polo Davao, said in Wednesday's edition of Club 888 media forum that more than 100 exhibitors are expected to participate in the event.

"There are about 72 booths from various sectors in the travel industry. The show intends to showcase various tourism products of the different participating exhibitors," Boncato said.

The show also aims to increase awareness about different destinations not only in Mindanao, but also those in the Visayas and Luzon, as well as other areas within the Bimp-Eaga Region.

International carriers like Lufthansa, KLM, and the Air France are also expected to participate in the event.

According to Konkordans, this is the first time that Davao City will host a travel show, which has been exhibited by Global-Link Marketing and Management in Cebu and in Manila.

Boncato claimed that Davao City has already proven and regarded as an emerging tourist destination not only in the domestic front but in the international market as well.

Davao's tourism reflects that of RP
By Grace L. Plata

DAVAO CITY -- The state of Davao's tourism is a mirror of the tourism industry in the whole country.

Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Joseph "Ace" Durano said this in his speech during Friday night's induction of the new Davao Tourism Association (Data) officers headed by businessman Angel Puentespina.

Durano said if there is a legacy he would like to leave as tourism secretary, it is making Davao City the newest international destination of the country -- comparable to if not surpassing other destinations like Cebu, Bohol, Boracay, and Palawan.

For that reason, he has pushed for Davao City to be chosen as host to the Asean Tourism Forum (ATF), which at present continues to be the standards by which succeeding hosts must compare with.

With the good publicity gained from the ATF, Durano said, they had not lost momentum to further Davao's promotion.

Durano said he even issued an official order that in DOT's participation in the markets of Korea and China, Davao City has to be the featured destination.

He said the idea to promote Davao is something he had conceptualized during his first visits in the city, saying he saw the city's potential.

According to Durano, there are three things that the city can look forward to this year as an additional boost to local tourism -- SeaAir's direct flights from Clark to Davao opening the city to international arrivals via Clark; direct flights from Hong Kong to Davao opening Davao to traffic coming from mainland China; and direct flights from Inchon, Korea to Davao opening the city to South Korea -- the number one source market today.

Durano lauded the efforts of the past Data officers and said he is confident that the new set of officers can face the coming challenges especially with the known entrepreneurial activity of the new president, Angel Puentespina, who is known for his orchids.

"As long as I'm around in the department, you (Data) will have a partner and an advocate in the DOT," Durano assured.

Travel and leisure at Davao Travel Show
By Ian Ray C. Garcia

A merry mix of international and local travel and leisure companies converged in the recently concluded - and very successful - Davao Travel Show ’07, the 1st International Travel, Tours, Leisure and Lifestyle, at the Entertainment Plaza of SM City Davao last 23-25 February 2007.

Department of Tourism secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano even lauded the event after seeing the surge of support and participation which the organizers have garnered from all over the region. During opening ceremonies, he congratulated the travel show’s organizers - Global-Link Marketing and Management Services, Inc. and Konkordans Destinations Management Company - for the triumph of this ambitious endeavor.

The opening ceremony was also graced by Vice-Mayor Luis Bonguyan, Councilor and Tourism Committee chair Susabel Reta, Travel Trade Sales of the Philippine Conventions and Visitors Corporation Officer in Charge Susan del Mundo, 2nd Secretary to the Consul of the Indonesian Consulate Mr. Bambang Gunawar, Malaysian Consul General Hussain Bakar, Japanese Consulate Director Hiroshi Mitsuya and Global-Link Managing Director Patrick Tan.

During its three-day run, a wide-range selection of travel and lifestyle products and services were showcased at various booths while special audio-visual presentations and raffle draws were also held at the entertainment plaza.

Contributing to the fiesta-like atmosphere of the travel show were the colorful and appealing booths of participating resorts, hotels and destinations, such as A’Famosa Resort Malaysia, Bay Park View Hotel Manila, Boracay Foundation, City Government of Puerto Princesa, CSB Hotel International, Crown regency Hotels, Suites and Residences, Department of Tourism 1 (Ilocos), Department of Tourism-Cagayan Valley Region, Department of Tourism 5 (Bicol), Department of Tourism-Eastern Visayas, Department of Tourism 10 (Northern Mindanao), Department of Tourism 11 (Davao), Department of Tourism 13 (Caraga), Enchanted Kingdom, Golden Peak Hotels and Suits, Island Cover Resort and Leisure Park, LimMarr Hotel Davao, Lost Horizon Beach Resort, Mango Park Hotel, Marco Polo Plaza Cebu, Macro Polo Davao, Microtel Inn and Suites, Pearl Farm Beach Resort, Provincial Government of Palawan, Provincial Government of Cagayan, Subic Bay Metroplitan Authority, Tambuli Resorts, The Legend Palawan, The Legend Villas, The Mabuhay Manor and Villa Margarita. Advertising companies, travel operators, media and tourism allied services, such as Adevrtex Advertising Exponent, Ad and Promo Management, Abacus Distribution System Phils., Assist-Card International, BIMP-EAGA Tourism Council, Chase Technologies Corporation, Comanche International, Davao TV, Davao Wild Water Adventure, Davao Association of Tour Operators, Davao Tourism Association, DMCI Homes, EVI Distribution, Fox Chit Business Systems, Konkordans Destination Management, Love Radio Davao, Microdata Systems, Mindanao Daily Mirror, PhilExplorer Travel Company, PAGCOR, PLDT, Philippine Retirement Authority, PhilTown Properties, Proquest Publishing, SunStar Davao, Uniglobe Travel Ware, Wind and Wave, and Mindanao Times, also joined the event. Not to be outdone were the attractive booths of various transport services including Asian Spirit, Air France KLM, ATSC-Superferry, Lufthansa Airlines, SEAIR, Star Cruises, and Royal Carribean/Baron Travel.

With the feat that the Davao Travel Show has achieved, an increase of tourists is surely expected not just in Davao City and Mindanao but also in other parts of the country and the region.

It certainly showed us once again that Davao is not just a tourism destination but also an important hub for international conferences and expositions, giving us a greater competitive edge in attracting more investments in the city.

Koresco is a group of retired Korean military officers. They used to operate (thru lease) the Zamboanga Golf Course for a Golf School for young Koreans. They left Zamboanga because of some bad deals. Their credibility is questionable. I hope they'll do good in CDO.

Yup, AFAIK, they're doing good.. My school mate, who happens to be the assistant HR in Hotel Koresco, said that it(Koresco) is enjoying the highest occupancy rate in CDO at more than 80%(CDO's average hotel occupancy rate is 68.1%:2006 figure).

also, they're currently building their 7 storey Condotel, right at the back of the Hotel annex..

I've seen their ads in a Korean daily which a Korean friend showed me 4 years ago. They have good hotels all over South Korea. Unfortunately, they partnered with a fellow Korean who was corrupt and who misrepresented the company. After the principals learned about the activities, they pulled out their golf cars (over 2 dozens) and 2 airconditioned buses and terminated their contract with the golf course.

Good Luck. That's a big boost for CDO.

Zamboanga Golf Course in Upper Calarian, Zamboanga City which is right next to the Navy Base.

Davao City was actually considered by Koresco before CDO.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007

Global Link expects P30M sales from manufacturing tech show
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

GLOBAL Link, a Manila-based event management team, is expecting P30 million sales from the Manufacturing Technology Show slated at the Davao City Convention Center on March 3.

Susan Palad, a representative of local organizer Davao Convention Bureau, said Wednesday the show is also expected to trigger interests among businessmen on the latest technologies that would benefit them.

"This is actually the second manufacturing technology show in Davao. Global Link knows the potential market in Mindanao, they were able to see the huge market here, otherwise they will not set another show after the last one," Palad said at the Club 888 press forum.

She said exhibitors will surely spend much money for the shipping cost of the machineries, which would come from the different suppliers all over the world, but the exhibitors have no doubt of getting back their money after the exhibit.

Global Link reported that a total of P23.5 million was generated from the first technology show organized in Davao City.

Palad also said the holding of different events in Davao City is a way of promoting the city since it will be open opportunities for tourists, exhibitors, and new investors.

Royal Mandaya is now self-managed after they pulled out from the Barcelo Management Group. A lot of businesses went down after the Asia Financial Crisis and RM was not spared from it. They had to knock off some operating expences and so the demise of Barcelo in Davao.

The maverick
By Rudolph Alama

HE TELLS the reigning WBC International Super featherweight defending champion Manny Pacquiao to walk in the middle of the ring at his signal.

The People's Champ faithfully waits for his hint. He then tells Pacquiao to pound his gloves and take off his hood, Pacquiao dutifully agrees.

He then orders Manny to execute a powerful left hook, and the Pacman without question does what he is told. Now he asks Pacquiao to quit smiling and put intensity on his facial expression and with it, the celebrated boxer erases the din of a smile and puts on a face that has put fear in the hearts of his legendary opponents.

Who is this person, which has the gall to command the former IBF and WBC flyweight division champion, hailed as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers today, to obey to his instructions in precision? Is he the respected trainer Freddie Roach? Or is it his promoter Bob Arum? Would that person be Manny's mother Dionisia? or his wife Jinky?

He is no other than a 21-year-old Ateneo de Davao mass communication senior named Gary Bautista who was given a rare chance to direct the People's Champ in a TV commercial shot in the boxer's hometown in General Santos City.

The commercial is actually a Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) drug-abuse campaign infomercial. A result of a recent partnership with Davao City based Alchemy of Vision and Lights Film and TV productions during the Mindanao Film Festival, in which PDEA decided to tap homegrown filmmakers in its future advocacy campaigns.

In the Mindanao Film Festival held last December, three Mass Communications schools (Holy Cross, University of Mindanao and Ateneo de Davao) competed in the intercollegiate documentary competition, which eventually was won by Holy Cross with their spunky documentary Dropesa.

However, Gary Bautista and his Ateneo team were chosen by no less than PDEA Director-General Dionisio Santiago after he was impressed with their anti-drug documentary Ang Kangitngit sa Davao.

After PDEA successfully negotiated for the school's consent, Gary's Project Ate team, consisting of Mass Comm classmates Ching Ocon, Paul de la Merced and Sheryl Sapitin proceeded to General Santos City where they were joined by the PDEA 11 group headed by Supt. Wilkins Villanueva and the AVL technical team led by Dax Cañedo.

The shoot took two days, and according to Gary was a very memorable experience in directing the Pacman and also PDEA director general Santiago who also appears in the infomercial.

Gary said that he found Manny Pacquiao to be a very jolly and approachable fellow keen to swap jokes and at the same time is an intense and experienced performer.

He is very easy to direct, especially in the boxing scenes, once the cameras start rolling he's in the zone, Gary said.

Working on a concept by Paul de la Merced, Gary was able to overcome directorial jitters with his distinguished cast. Aside from Manny Pacquiao and Dir. Gen. Santiago, Buboy Kimpo, Gary's classmate who is known as the rapping finalist in the erstwhile MTV Philippines talent search also lends his acting skills in the infomercial as the boxer whom Pacquiao is set to pound.

Buboy was really trembling in fear during the boxing scenes, when he saw Pacquaio's intense acting, it just seemed so real. Gary recounts Buboy's experiences. "Dun lang daw niya na-feel ang takot nina Morales and Barrera."
Gary says the infomercial will be shown nationwide and he is honored that he was chosen for the project, aside from that he finally was able to meet and work with his no. 1 boxing idol.

Known for his quirky, eye-catching productions Gary is a young and maverick filmmaker who has made music videos and short films way back when he entered college.

Gary first learned about basic editing on his trusty video camera, until he learned non-linear editing using Final Cut Pro, which is the standard editing software for Ateneo de Davao Masscom students. And ever since he has gone to carve its name in making music made videos, like the Paalam music video of the alternative band Lizard chips and Buboy Kimpo's Human Beat, he has also made four short films in collaboration with his friend Gian Carlo Bonador where they created the production group G-squared.

Gary is also our resident editor and VJ host of our cable TV show Durian Jam. Aside from providing the show's quirkily hip editing he lends his experience as a radio DJ by being its host. In the show he gets to interview various personalities like Angel Locsin, Kyla and rock band Bamboo. And aside from his visual flair one can see his musical talent as he composes some of the show's audio tracks.

In high school, he was the vocalist of their band Acidia, which counts Sidecrash vocalist Bermin Gaya as one of its members. A multi-faceted talent, which shows in the many productions he has made. Gary's talent and passion has greatly benefited Davao's fledgling pop scene.

I want to make films and direct music videos, that's my plan after college. Gary said. But as of now his eyes are still glued on the PC monitor in AVL's editing suite eyeing what video effect to use as Manny Pacquiao is facing his huge opponent on the ring. And two hours later Gary will be off to school attending his college classes.

Manufacturer’s, techno exhibit for the 2nd time
Published : 2007-03-01

FOR the second time the Manufacturer and Technology Exhibit moves to Davao from March 1 to 3, 2006 at the Davao Trade and Convention Center, an indicator that the participants saw the potential markets in Mindanao. Susan Palad of the Davao Tourism Association (DATA) said these exhibitors keep coming because they know there is a market in Mindanao. She mentioned that during the last year’s show, a manufacturer was able to partner with a supplier for a wood working business.

“Immediately after the show and up until now the producer had been busy meeting orders both domestic and international,” she said. She said this is what the organizers would want to achieve where business matching will take place and partnership sustained. During the three-day exhibit last year, it was reported that it netted P23.5 million sales and the organizations goal for this year’s exhibit is at P30 million.

It was learned that Golden Bell will be bringing in 15 new machines for woodworking. Other exhibitors include Business Machine Corporations where top of the line products featuring Total Office Products and Services Show, U-BIX Corporation where it will carry other digital copier like Konica Minolta.

It will also display auto and video equipment, communications equipment, copying facilities, computers and printers, corporate gifts, desktop publishing systems, fast printing facilities, graphic art equipment, laminating machines, large format printing, office equipment and facilities, plasma and video wall, security systems, video conferencing and visual communications.

The Gakken Philippines Inc (GPI) is also in full force where it will provide equipment configuration for entrepreneurs who desire to engage in the unique and profitable quick print business. GPI represents foreign companies such as DUPLO Corporation (Japan), AB Dick (USA), Autoprint Machineries (India), Graphic Wizard (Canada), Sunray Paper Cutter (Taiwan), and KAGA Components (Japan) The Manufacturer and Technology Show is one event for everyone whether they be a producer, exporter, trader, professional, buyer or end-user.

DURING the recent celebration of the Chinese New Year, Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte led guests in the groundbreaking ceremony of Davao City's first-ever Chinatown Friendship Archway, a joint project of the City Government of Davao and the Davao City Chinatown Development Council.

The structure is sponsored by the heirs of Francisco Villa-Abrille (Lim Chuan Juna) and will be built along Magsaysay Ave., near Jones Circle.

The landmark by Architect Arnel Villacampa was inspired by the 400-year old architectural designs of Yuan Garden in Shanghai, China. The columns were designed similar to the bamboo, a traditional construction material of the Chinese.

The archway is embellished with fish and pearl, the symbols of the Villa-Abrille family whose ancestry originated from Amoy, China, now Xiamen.

Although I already belong to the 5th generation of the Villa-Abrille clan, I feel blessed that I am still aware of our colorful past, which was painstakingly preserved by family members as well as noted local historians and writers such as Ernesto Corcino and Josefina San Pedro through oral history and old photographs.

Francisco Villa-Abrille (Lim Chuan Juna)

Lim Chuan Juna arrived in Mindanao when he was only in his teens. He earned his living first as a pearl diver and fisherman, and later as a pearl trader in Jolo, Sulu.

He came to Davao in the late 1800's as owner of a general store in the then Claveria Street, opened coconut plantations and ranches in what is now Bucana, Matina and Maa in Davao City and in Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur.

Considered as one of the Chinese pioneers of Davao, he and his wife, Maria Loreto Tan Sipo, had five children, namely: Ricardo, Carlos, Luisa (my great grandmother), Cesareo and Candeleria. They were later Christianized by the names Francisco Villa-Abrille and Maria Loreto.

Known to be an industrious and honest man, Lim Juna was well liked by everybody. In fact, the Spanish officials then became his friends and because of his innate good nature, he received from the government a substantial grant of agricultural and residential lands within the poblacion.

However, he did not keep all the lands to himself.

PIA Press Release
2007/03/03

Aboitiz firm 2006 income jumps 19% to P3.75 B

Davao City (3 March) -- Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Inc. (AEV) ended 2006 with a net income of P3.754 billion, a 19% increase from its 2005 net income. This translates to earnings per share (EPS) of P0.76. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) increased by 5% to P6.87 billion.

AEV posted a strong 4th quarter in 2006, earning a net income of P1.34 billion, a 124% jump from the same period in 2005. This includes some nonrecurring income from gains on sale of certain assets in the company’s transport and food businesses.

The income contributions of all AEV business groups increased in 2006, with the biggest share coming from the power group at P2.26 billion, up 12% from 2005. The generation companies turned in P1.09 billion, up 3.4%, while the contribution of distribution utilities went up by 21% to P1.18 billion.

The power group’s strong performance is expected to continue. In December 2006, the partnership between Aboitiz Power and SN Power of Norway won the bid for the 360 megawatt (MW) Magat hydroelectric plant in Isabela, the largest such facility to be privatized by government to date. Also, the company will soon commence construction of two Greenfield hydro power plants in Davao with a total capacity of 73 MW.

AEV’s banking investments contributed P1.1 billion in 2006, up 7% from 2005. UnionBank’s performance was affected by the interim impact of expenses related to the purchase of International Exchange Bank and the industry-wide margin compression as interest rates declined further.

The food group increased its income contribution by 34%, turning in P510 million. This result is attributable to strong performance from all its businesses, namely flour, swine and feeds, as well as a one-time gain of P39 million on the sale of its yeast business after divesting its entire stake in the joint venture Pilmico-Mauri Foods Corporation.

The transport group posted the highest percentage increase in contribution, turning in P142 million, a 313% jump from the previous year. The company had a solid 4th quarter and booked nonrecurring gains net of some write offs on sale of certain assets in the last quarter of 2006. Also, the company was able to continue lowering total expenses as a result of various cost-cutting initiatives put in place as early as two years ago.

AEV’s cash balance as of December 31, 2006 increased to P8.02 billion. Its net debt to equity ratio stood at 0.72, while its current ratio was at _2.07:1.

In January 2007, AEV successfully placed its entire treasury shares holdings representing 742.5 million shares at a price of P8.20 per share equivalent to P6.1 billion or US$124 million. The offering saw high quality demand from approximately 60 institutional investors in US, Europe and Asia which has significantly increased the company’s free float and further strengthened AEV's shareholder base. International investors took up 89% of the offering while domestic investors took up 11%.

On February 23, 2007 AEV paid a cash dividend of P0.20 per share or a total of P1.14 billion to stockholders on record as of February 9, 2007. (DLPC/R. Luga) [top

The philanthropist

To hasten the development of the city, he made donations for roads, the Davao General Hospital (now Davao Mental Hospital), Davao Chinese School, Boy Scouts of the Philippines, and other sites for public use that remain to this day.

He likewise generously gave to the church and charitable causes.

In 1969, Lim Juna's philanthropic contributions earned him the distinction of being one of the first Datu Bago awardees (posthumous), the highest honor ever bestowed on a son of Davao. A downtown street (Villa-Abrille) and subdivision (Juna) were also named after him.

Though not Davao-born, Lim Juna took great pride in being a Dabawenyo and encouraged his children to do their share in the growth and progress of the city.

To continue his legacy of helping Davao develop as Mindanao's premier city, his heirs have undertaken the task of sponsoring the P1.2 million Friendship Archway, the first of four Archways that will frame Davao's Chinatown, encompassing 42 hectares.

Knowing my past

During the Villa-Abrille's grand family reunion several years ago, one of the highlights of the festive occasion was the audio-visual presentation detailing the life and times of my great, great grandfather Lim Juna.

Everybody paid careful attention as his fruitful life became known, most especially to the younger generation who had limited knowledge of our benevolent forefather.

In addition, individual audio-visual presentations were made on the biographies of his children. A comprehensive family tree and old pictures of the clan were likewise displayed at the venue.

After the presentations, there was an exciting and challenging game called the "Family History Quiz" for the newer generation.

Importance of oral histories

According to Dr. Lyman Platt of the Genealogical Society of Utah, "Oral histories are stories that living individuals tell about their past, or about the past of other people. Because those who provide the information are generally older members of the family, both their lives and their memories are at risk of being lost to time.

Therefore, Dr. Platt stresses that "It should always be the first priority of a beginning genealogist or family historian to find these patriarchs and matriarchs of the family, be they great-grandparents, great-granduncles, great-grandaunts grandparents, granduncles, grandaunts, older first and second cousins, and even older neighbors and acquaintances of these people."

"Of particular value are the stories, anecdotes, and family traditions, songs, and especially information associated with pictures, documents, and other records," he adds.

Roots and wings

I read an inspiring quotation lately that states, "A child who knows he's loved unconditionally is a child with roots, he will stand in the storms of life. On the other hand, give him self-worth and teach him to dream, and you will give him wings."

How true!

I also believe that one of the ways we can reinforce our children's roots and wings is to give them a greater understanding and appreciation of the family's history and heritage.

Through this, we would be able to honor our ancestors by continuing their legacy -- family values, beliefs, traditions and practices that we hold dear. Most importantly, our kids will be able to have a stronger sense of identity and pride in our heritage.

As one of the activities that the entire family can get involved with this summer, why don't we give time and effort to pay tribute to our clan's rich past?

Schedule family reunions; create a detailed family tree; collect old photographs (if possible, reproduce multiple copies) and do research with the help of the family's patriarchs and matriarchs through oral history.

By being aware of our roots, it is our hope that the children will have the confidence to grow wings to soar even higher.

is having a 'Chinatown' good for the dabawenyos? i remember in the early 70's the 'chinatown' is isolated from the rest of Davao City, aside from shopping and dining their's not much interaction between the tsinoys and dabawenyos , i hope it will not phsycologically revert to isolation between the tsinoys and the people of Davao .

Damosa Market Basket open
Published : 2007-03-03

Damoso Market Basket joined the entire nation’s celebration of the Chinese New Year last February 18. The celebration is also the soft opening of the latest project of the Damosa Land Inc., the Damosa Market Basket located in Lanang, Davao City. Damosa Market Basket is Davao’s newest destination for shopping, dining and entertainment. The Damosa Market Basket is a one-stop neighborhood convenience center that offers a complete line of quality low-priced goods and basic services in a comfortable shopping environment. City gov't calls on Dabawenyos to donate artifacts for museum

NOW that the "Museo Dabawenyo" building construction is complete, the City Government called on locals to donate or lend artifacts and documents relative to Davao City's history and culture.

City Legal Office chief Melchor Quitain said the museum is set to be opened during the "Araw ng Dabaw" celebration, but unfortunately they have to reset it due to lack of exhibit materials.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007

Quitain said he was personally instructed by the Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte's wife Elizabeth to look after the museum once construction is done.

Quitain, however, said some of Davao's oldest families have already signified their intention to donate priced possessions of historical value to the museum for all Dabawenyos to appreciate.

Donors, he said, will be properly acknowledged by including name and details in the exhibit.

The Museo Dabawenyo was built through City Ordinance 02966-06 that was approved October 2006 and identifies the city mayor, division superintendent of the Department of Education, City Council committee chair on education, City Council committee chair on tourism, and the chair of the Davao Historical Society as the composition of the Advisory Board Tasked to maintain and to collect material for the museum exhibit.
