naa pa another secret resto in Davao , imo parang ang trend dito taguan ng mga resto , i mean they don't want to tell their "secret places" dito parang ayaw nilang maging crowded :D

Al Fresca ,Matina ,Davao City .

What's Great About the Place:
It's perfect for parties! It has a huge lawn, a man-made lake, a hammock to savor the view, and lots of coconut trees. Its great to bring kids here. Very family-friendly. Non-airconditioned.

http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/2269/img0248gh5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

When we went here to celebrate my niece's birthday, Aira Natasha, we had the lawn all by ourselves and organized party games for the rest of the children in the family. We brought balloons and cake, too. Very few people come here since its "unpublished" (I suspect the owner wanted it to remain that way) and we only learned about this place through couple of friends who've been here. I guess they (owner) rely heavily through word of mouth and it works!

Pact between Aboitiz firms bared
By Carmelito Q. Francisco Published : 2007-03-09

THE two Aboitiz power companies have signed a memorandum of agreement for power supply of the city that would hit 400-gigawatt hours a year for 12 years. Signing the agreement were Alfonzo Aboitiz of the Davao Light and Power Co. (Davao Light) and Rene Ronquillo of the Hedcor Inc., a company started by the father of Mr. Aboitiz, Ernesto, in 1972.

Under the agreement, Ronquillo’s company, which is into power generation, will supply power to the DLPC which distributes power in the city and some areas of the nearby Davao del Norte. Although he admitted that the agreement will not result in lower power rates, Aboitiz said this will still result in a cheaper power compared with other areas as Hedcor Inc. offered the lowest bid of P4.0856 per kilowatt-hour compared with the bid of Marubeni consortium which was at P5.0985 per kilowatt-hour.

“Davao Light chose the Hedcor consortium as its preferred power supplier largely because of a significantly lower financial bid,” Aboitiz said during the briefing on the agreement, pointing out that the other company was not chosen because the two companies are all part of the Aboitiz Equity Ventures, a publicly-listed conglomerate of the Aboitiz clan. Another advantage, he added, is that since the Hedcor Inc. plant are all hydroelectric ones, it is “zero rated on VAT (value-added tax).”

“Over the life of the contract, at the current peso rate, this price differential will mean significant savings for Davao Light’s consumers,” he added. Aboitiz also emphasized that the agreement will still be approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission, the body that sets the prices of power. Davao Light had to look for other sources of power considering that the government-owned National Power Corporation (NPC) was prevented from setting up more plants under the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001.

Although the company also extended for another 10 years its contract for power supply with the NPC, Aboitiz said the government-run company cannot sufficiently supply the energy demand of the company which reached to 1.269 billion kilowatt hour last year. The two companies were among the four companies which submitted their bids for power supply for the Southeastern Mindanao Area, the biggest consumer of power in Mindanao based on data from the National Transmission Corp.

The power supply agreement will start in August 2009 when the construction of the Sibulan hydroelectric plant in Sibulan, Sta. Cruz is completed. The Sibulan project, which is a P5 billion investment, will generate 42.5 megawatt of power with two hydroelectric plants running, one is a 16.5 megawatt plant, while the other is 26 megawatt plant, said Ronquillo. The company will also start building in 2008 the Tamugan-Suawan-Panigan power plants which will generate a total capacity of 30.5 megawatts.

These plants are expected to start generating power by 2010, he added. The company already has about P3.3 in power generation assets with 16 plants in Benguet, Ilocos Sur and Davao City whose combined capacity could reach to 109 megawatts. In 1972, the company was awarded the lease contract for the National Power Corp. hydroelectric power plants in Talomo, Davao City. It was about two years ago that the government eventually turned over the plants to the Aboitiz-owned company as these were the first plants to be privatized.

Microsoft-backed IT learning center opens in Davao

Written by Walter I Balane / MindaNews
Friday, 09 March 2007 11 00 58

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/8 March) – Software giant Microsoft and its local partners have opened a learning center that makes information technology professional certification more accessible and affordable to Mindanaoans. The center, Microsoft's first outside Metro Manila and Cebu, is seen to cut the time acquiring IT education from the usual two to four years in just 27 or so days, officials said.

The initiative came with Microsoft's partnership with Davao-based iThink Technologies and Manila-based Edu Pro.

The center, which Microsoft considers as a "certified partner for learning solutions," will offer modular courses such as applications development and desktop systems administration.

It opens to its first batch of students in the last week of March as the partners launched it in formal ceremonies Thursday afternoon.

Jun Mercader, iThink managing director, said it is time for Davao to catch up. He said they took the initiative to provide a program so that local professionals find a means to get certification and be able to compete.

He said as of now, not a single IT firm has the battery of certified IT professionals to cater to international demand. Jaime Garchitorena, general manager of Edu Pro, one of Microsoft's major partners in the Philippines, said it is meant to respond to a demand for Microsoft certified professionals to back growth in the IT sector.

He said over a diploma on IT education, 60 percent of hiring professionals seek an applicant's certification upon entry to the IT industry.

Garchitorena said the move is aimed at preparing local capacity to respond to the demand of IT firms like those in business process outsourcing (BPO) for Microsoft-certified professionals.

He said ideally, firms abroad seek partners with at least 100 certified professionals, which the Philippine market could barely cope with.

Ali Jaleel, Microsoft Asia Pacific sales director, said they saw a lot of enthusiasm over the growth of the IT sector in the Philippines, which is also reflected in Mindanao.

Microsoft opened an office in Cebu to cater to the southern Philippine market, including Davao and the rest of Mindanao.

Boy Bawal, who manages the Cebu office, said Davao and Mindanao plays a very important segment for Microsoft's market in southern Philippines.

Garchitorena said those who will finish modules offered in the center will have advantage over those not recognized by Microsoft.

He said the center's trainers are all certified by the firm's professional certification system.

In the end of the module, which could range for at least 27 days, learners could also obtain a Microsoft Professional Certification. A module would cost at least P25,000 in Manila but will be offered with a 30-percent discount in the Davao learning center.

He said, however, the move will not compete with a four-year course in IT education. He said they are eyeing these graduates for the Microsoft courses.

Sec. Yap approves P14-M irrigation rehab
by TG Vidal

HAGONOY, Davao del Sur (10 March) -- Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Arthur C Yap approved outright the P 14 Million irrigation rehab in Hagonoy, Davao del Sur during a dialogue with hybrid rice farmers in the area recently.

The dynamic response of Sec. Yap to the farmers during an open forum highlighting the Modified Rapid Composting and Field Day, as well as signing of a 100-hectare RP-Japan Project in Sinayawan, Hagonoy, Davao del Sur, drew admiration and glee from the farmers.

Accompanied by Regional Executive Director Roger Chio of DA RFU-XI, Asec. Dennis Araullo, Dir. Prisco Malabanan, GMA Rice Program Director and other DA officials, the farmers of Hagonoy were treated with the usual dynamic response of Sec. Yap’s decisions for the benefit of farmers in the countryside.

“Irrigation is among the top priorities of DA’s thrust in order to improve the production of farmers, particularly those who are producing hybrid rice, so I approve this request of Cong. Douglas Cagas which you followed-up today,” Sec. Yap said.

He said that other concerns of the farmers in Davao del Sur will also be included in his agenda like the establishment of mini-NFA warehouses in the barangays, seeds subsidies, farm-to-market roads, soft loans and marketing.

“I want to see these farmers become business entrepreneurs someday, hence, I am investing these projects for them to have higher yields and earn more. I encourage you to plant hybrid rice because this is the variety that ensures higher yields,” Yap said.

“This rapid composting that you have been practicing in your farms in laudable since you save more for farm inputs, and lessen your dependence on commercial fertilizers. This will not be my last visit here, I’ll come back soon to find out how my investment through these projects improve your farming,’ Sec. concluded. (DA/PIA XI) [top]

ComVal celebrates Annibina
by JMD Abangan

NABUNTURAN, Compostela Valley (10 March) -- The sun did shine during the week-long celebration of the 9th Anibina Festival, giving heat to the hot political season.

There might be political divide in the province but its constituents were united in showing outpouring support especially during the final day of the founding anniversary celebration.

People filled the lobby of the Provincial Capitol after participating the morning parade on March 8, dubbed as the Bulawanong Pasundayag sa Kadalanan 2007.

Tourism Officer Fe Maestre was glad municipalities of the province sent in their contingents to the street dance competitions, to the civic-military parade and even during the Ms. Anibina 2007 Grand Pageant Night.

“Pasalamat gyod mi kay daghan ang mianhi,” she said in an interview.

At least efforts poured to turn the annual thanksgiving event as unique as possible became fruitful “because we really want it to become more lively and colorful,” she said.

Conforming to the desire of Provincial Governor Jose Caballero who is on his last term, Maestre said the festival this year carried the cultural and indigenous concept in all of the activities.

“We had discussed it in the committee to give importance on indigenous culture and arts in all aspects of the celebration,” she said.

So the usual motorcade, the drum and bugle competition, the Women’s Day and the street-dancing turned out much colorful and more lively.

But Maestre said the culture and arts concept was fully shown during the Grand Pageant Night which highlighted “gold creations woven in the theatrics and reinvented tales on Anibina.”

“This was the first time that we had conducted the pageant with a storyline in presenting the contestants,” she said.

Contestants came out on stage dressed in Mindanao inspired gowns, in nymph suit and in gold “avant-garde creation” following a storyline that told about the quest of a goddess named “Anibina” to protect the bounty of nature.

With events participated in by all municipalities of the province through its respective tourism offices, Maestre concluded that the annual festival was successful.

Governor Caballero thanked his constituents for their support, saying the festival would not have been as successful without “the outpouring support of the people.” (PIA XI) [top]

P10-B hydropower projects for Davao soon
by RG Alama

Davao City (10 March) -- Hydropower projects worth at least P10 billion will be put up soon and is expected to provide the power needs of Davao Light and Power Company.

The Hedcor Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of Aboitiz Equity Ventures will be putting up the P5-billion Sibulan Hydropower project which would generate 42.5 Megawatts of electricity that is expected to supply 32% of the present power needs of Davao Light.

According to Rene Ronquillo President of Hedcor, they are targeting that the construction of the power project will commence this month and that operations would start by August 2009.

The hydropower project involves the construction of two power plants and small dams called weirs utilizing run-of-river for the generation of its power, hence there is no need to impound the river’s waters.

Sibulan river particularly its downstream areas are popular tourism attractions of Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur, famed for its river tubing and other white water activities.

Ronquillo said that they will be rehabilitating about 4.15 kilometers of existing roads and will be opening 10.13 kilometers of new roads as the project site is a 12-hour hike from the nearest passable road. He stressed that HEDCOR will be taking care of the critical environment of which the plant is located as he said that hydropower itself is a statement of the company’s dedication in achieving a cleaner environment.

With hydropower the plant project is expected to displace about 42 million kilos of Carbon Dioxide per year which would have been the product if a fossil fuel plant of the same capacity would be constructed.

The community itself will be benefited from the project which includes taxes and community revenues, in which the company waived its 0% Real Property Tax incentive, the project will prioritized local employment in its construction and operations stage, it will provide electricity to its still powerless host communities, it is also supporting education, public health and community development in the barangays plus the project’s waterworks can be tapped by the community for irrigation.

Meanwhile, Hedcor is also planning to build the Tamugan Hydro Power project which will cost another P5-billion and would generate 30.5 megawatts for Davao Light.

Ronquillo plans to start the project by 2008 so that it will be operational by 2010. The project will include the construction of three power plants, weirs and impounding basins and a diversion tunnel which will divert some of the water from Talomo to Tamugan River. He said that aside from the benefits which will be enjoyed by the host community, the diversion tunnel constructed will reduce the incidence of flashfloods from the two rivers.

Hedcor is the country’s second biggest producer of hydroelectricity next only to Napocor. It traces its roots in 1972 in Davao City when it was tasked to operate the Talomo hydro-power plants, since then it has expanded with successful projects in Benguet and Ilocos Sur building and operating some of the country’s most successful hydropower plants.

Hedcor’s investment was in response to Davao Light’s need for additional power which the National Power Corporation (Napocor) can no longer provide. Despite being the center of business and trade n Mindanao, Southern Mindanao is only allocated about 276 megawatts or only 18% of the 1,515 MW Mindanao Grid and with the areas’ unprecedented growth Davao Light needs more power to satisfy its ever-growing number of consumers. by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (10 March) -- A multi million mobile exhibit is in Davao to woo Dabawenyos and teach them origins of these pre-historic creatures.

Dino World Travelling Exhibition owned by the Vilorias has chosen Davao City as their first exposure in the Philippines and Southeast Asia.

In a press briefing at The Marco Polo Hotel, Funfair marketing officer Jason John Joyce said the Viloria family has picked Davao to set exhibition first because Davao is also their home and in fact the birthplace of current president Jasper Viloria.

He said they wanted to share to the Dabawenyos their experiences by bringing Dinoworld to Davao.

Dinoworld he said was inspired by the different theme parks that the Vilorias visited in other parts of the world like America and Europe.

Housed at the NCCC Mall exhibit area are the exhibit showcase that includes dinosaur skeleton, robotic reptilian replicas and 500 million year-old old fossils.

The exhibit has five full size dinosaur skeletons and 500 fossils of different prehistoric species.

Jason said the Dino World Exhibit operated by Fun Fair Venture, Inc. promises to take its visitors back to time and teach them about the origins of the dinosaurs and other pre-historic creatures that existed during the Mesozoic era through various state-of-the-art presentations and robotic models.

The attractions include Dinolandia, a mock-up of the habitat of dinosaurs that will showcase the actual movements of the pre-historic lizard in their natural environment; 3D Theater, a virtual reality experience that will enable guests to see the dinosaurs come alive using 3D technology; Land Before Time, a living diorama that will showcase actual dinosaur skeletons and other pre-historic fossils and artifacts unearthed in China, Australia, Morocco, France, Korea, Brazil, Mongolia, Myanmar, Russia, USA, Indonesia and other parts of the world.

There will also be Activity Area Center where children and adults can explore and participate in interactive activities such as Dino Art Workshop, Dino Lesson Series, Photo Gallery, and Dino Digging of the Fossils with the participation of Dino World Mascots.

With Dino World it will bring back Davao City not only 70 years ago when the city became the metropolis in Southern Philippines but 200 million years back when the dinosaurs ruled the earth. (PIA XI) [top]

Tagum, Tagum, Musikahan

MUSICALITY is one of the Filipino’s defining traits. Our extraordinary dedication and passion for music have earned for us a reputation for being great musicians.

From ethnic rhythm to contemporary pop, Filipino musicians thrive in varying levels of creativity. Danceable tunes delight every partygoer, melodious folk songs tug at the heartstrings of patriotic listeners, romantic ballads touch poignant hearts.

Yet amid the growing influence of high-tech produced music, Filipinos have managed to keep their music roots in the family and schools.

In line with the Philippine Arts Month, Tagum City in Davao del Norte recently staged "Musikahan Festival" together with the Department of Tourism (DoT).

This distinct cultural event, which coincides with the city’s commemmoration of its founding anniversary, celebrates the Filipino excellence in music and is considered the grandest music festival in Mindanao.

A brainchild of Tagum City Mayor Rey Uy, Musikahan aims to make Davao known all over the country as a province that produces top-rated musicians.

"We want to develop home–grown talents and encourage the people, especially the youth, to explore the musical field instead of wasting their time on non–productive activities," Uy said.

More than 2,000 music and performing artists from all over the region composed of school-based and LGU supported community artists participated in a variety of music competitions and concerts such as the "Pasiklaban" (battle of the bands); "Harana ng Bayan"; Marching Band Competition; Quintet Singing Competition; Drum, Bugle and Lyre Competition; Chorale Competition; and the Rondalla and Folk dance Competition.

DAVAO’S MUSIC CENTER

Alma Uy, president of Tagum City Tourism Council and wife of the mayor, claims that there has been an increase in the demand for musical instruments since the festival started in 1999. In Tagum, there used to be just one store selling guitars. It now has three.

She also revealed that this project has since turned into an advocacy with the city government now looking at venturing to music schools in order into provide venues where the youth can learn and further develop their talents.

Likewise, DoT Secretary Joseph Ace Durano, who graced the event, is looking at the possibility of making Tagum City the music center in the Davao Region.

"The Musikahan Festival could also become a world–class event, luring both domestic and foreign tourists, and even investors," he said.

Next year, the city plans to invite performers from the BIMP-EAGA member countries, namely — Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia, to participate in the event. BIMP-EAGA or the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area, is Asia’s largest regional grouping, spanning territories of four ASEAN countries.

The annual festival gathers mostly local tourists in Tagum, stirring the city’s income and tourism-related businesses. The mayor is optimistic that the Musikahan Festival could grow world-class in the coming years "as long as it is improved and consistently patronized."

Tagum City, the capital of Davao province, takes pride as one of the country’s fastest growing urban centers. It is strategically a significant hub where all passenger buses and jeepneys from Northern Mindanao going to Davao City or Davao City to any point in Eastern and Northeastern Mindanao pass.

DCPO goes online
By Anthony S. Allada

The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) has launched a website to add more teeth in its fight against all forms of crimes. In a press conference yesterday morning, DCPO Director Jaime Morente said the new innovation is an effective tool in reporting a crime and providing the police with information that will lead to solution of crimes or arrest of persons involved in criminal activities. "It is a new door to receive citizen's complaints and information reports from the public through the internet. Right at the convenience of residences, hotels, internet cafes or wherever there's an internet access one can reach to DCPO's website by just submitting a filled-up online citizens compaint form," he said. He said the online complaint sheet, tagged with auto generated control number and very much similar to the "Police Blotter" recorded in the police stations, serves as the initial information for the police to start an investigation. "Filled-up electronic complaints can be either saved or printed by the reporting individual, it will be entered into DCPO's database and subject of further police action," he said. Morente said aside from the online citizen complaint form, the website also features the directory of different police stations and operating units of DCPO, gallery of the country's top most wanted, gallery of the city's most wanted, crime prevention tips, police news, and general information about DCPO. He said also complementing the website is the Police Online SMS Action System (Posas) PNP Text 2299, a text message center that receives complaints or information for police action.

American businessman Doran to open pro boxing stable in Davao City

Quezon City (10 March) -- Ron Doran, VP and Director of Industrial Biotechnology Corp. {ibty}, has committed to 4 top amateur boxers and 1 trainer in Mindanao.

Doran will provide training, equipment, housing and financial support to his first professionals. The Bleeding Shamrock Boxing Stable will train in the Almendras gym, Davao City.

Doran has also committed to gym renovations that are badly needed in the dilapidated gym.

Having been a supporter of Mindanao amateur boxing over the past three years, Doran has been discouraged to see top amateurs retire into oblivion because of no viable professional opportunities.

Doran is quoted as saying, "The pro stables I have seen in Mindanao with the exception of Governor Manny Pinols, are underfunded. And many of the managers lack the pro boxing connections needed to get their boxers on good fight cards with evenly matched opponents. "

He said, "My stable will be completely funded and I will be in a position to sign and support the best young boxers in Mindanao. Tony Aldegeur of the famed ALA Gym in Cebu once told me 'You have to go through 100 boxers to find one with world championship potential.'"

"I’m willing to make the commitment to find the next Boom Boom Bautista, Czar Amonsot or Prince Gabby. I know they are out there. I promise to find them and provide them with the means to become World Champions and Hero’s to the Philippino People," he said.

Ron Doran can be contacted at the Almendras Gym, Davao City. (PIA) [top]

Good evening Davao forum members.

I'm Lenas brother. After over 3 months of self-reflexions, mourning and reading her diaries, posts in here and other threads, notebooks, forum pm:s and e-mail I have become more than acquanted with her good friends as well as her enemies in this Forum.

Dinabaw, she listend to you, cared about you and helped you out by sending money when you asked for it. Lena always felt that we are not separated but share together a brother- and sisterhood in the family of man. She responded in good faith to your love approaches despite warnings from her concerned friends and some family -and forum members. "Love is trust" as you told her if she ever had doubt about something. You told her you are a good bluffer in poker gambling and always win. Well, when you showed her your true "pokerface" you hurt her more than you can ever grasp. Remember you told her about something you call the 4C (compassion, compatibility, commitment and comedy) You seem to have forgotten to tell her about your true priority C:s currency and café entreprenad. Aren't you forgetting some really important c.s here like caritas and catharsis? Since you claim to be such an educated man in your seeking for foreing women on different dating sites, I'm sure you know what I am talking about.

To the culprit that goes under the name rajah or sometimes the mole Val and other various forum names. To ostracize and want to exclude Lena from the forum activities is an act of discrimination in it's most destructive sense. In your last pm to her you act like the boss or administrator of the forum and tell her to act like Lili or get out of the forum. You tell her to be fun if she wants to stay. I have read Lili's posts she seem to be a nice woman and she has often said she dosen't like to be used as a source for any ego massage? Lena interupted the comfort and complaisancy of an apparant stagnated status quo. Your administrative overkill speaks for itself. To push the "I" botton on your menu implies a cencus of willful discrimination based upon a selfindulgent elitism or more a desperate atempt to preserve your status in the group. While we might appreciate a marching band it's sometimes wiser to keep in step with each our own uniqe tune as Lena was known to do. Learning to be true to yourself and others seems to entail a lifetime of focusing and having selfdiciplin. Such a noble act is rare among us today.

Gina you called yourself her sister? You faded fast under social pressure! "Birds of a feather flock together" I am refering to you and dinabaw both of you seek your fortune in Europe under the deception of love and care. At the same time you backtalk each other quiet allot in your contact with Lena. Maybe this is a Filipino trait to practise various masks. Naturally there is allot we don't know or understand about the Filipino culture. Lena was in for a chock when she tried to understand your ambigous thought patterns as well as you to might have been shocked about our direct manner of speach.

Enchanting Davao City. We are back again to finish the Davao promotion film project. This promotion is funded by Lena before she passed away. Patrik the film maker is making 3 documentaries about your city, they are to be sold over here to various European tv companies and given away for free to your own local tv companies. Patrik makes one Davao tourist film, one documentary on Davao city it,s culture, politics and allday life type of film and one film about Lena and her encounter with Davao and the Filipino culture so devestating for her persionally. We are glad to finish Lenas project about the country she loved so much, The Philippines and especially Davao.

I like to take this oportunity to thank those of you who were her friends and who helped our family in a difficult time. Thanks to those of you who were loyal friends before and after her untimely departure. In the spirit of closure I ask you to remember her as she was and will always remain in our hearts, a blond blue eyed girl with a generous heart open for all, a girl who cared about important issues and who showed solidarity with her fellow man. She would not waist time or play phoney games nor be indifferent to the issues of our world. Her words followed after an honest conviction; "care, don't be indifferent".

See you Davao City. Goodnight and goodbye to all forum members!

"The standard of driving remains the same - appalling -- and a great place to observe this is the J.P.Laurel/Buhangin Road overpass which, day or night,
is plagued by roadgoing idiots."

DID you catch the news coverage of the Samal Festival Cycling Challenge? All 180 kilometers of it?

I saw some of the competitors early Sunday morning on their way to the Samal ferry. Bicycling. No team bus. No RUV pulling a low-loader trailer. These guys were bicycling to the race and I'll bet, afterwards, they cycled home too.

Me? I've been slumming. For two months my bicycle has stood unbicycled. I've excuses by the thousand; the weather's been wet, my knee's playing up, the chain's slipping, but really it's good old-fashioned sloth.

Laziness. I couldn't be bothered to get out of bed.

Until the other day; when the bathroom scales - no matter which way I leaned -- told me that all those kilos I'd exercised off were making a comeback.

Hence, me spotting the Samal racers and that's what I like about bicycling -- the gawk factor. The ease of looking about and admiring the scenery. Impossible cramped up in a jeepney; absolutely impossible aboard the eyes tight shut slalom of a taxi ride but a bicycle? Stop and gawk -- see what's going on.

Magallanes Street has a new coating of asphalt. Just in time for the Araw ng Dabaw and great for the new SUVs and smart sedans, which are populating the city's streets. Had you noticed? Davao's traffic is getting richer. The trickle down principle -- at least as far as the moneyed folks -- is working. New auto models are becoming common and the expensive European marques not so rare. BMWs, Mercedes, Audis, I've even seen a Porsche convertible.

The standard of driving remains the same - appalling -- and a great place to observe this is the J.P.Laurel/Buhangin Road overpass, which, day or night,
is plagued by roadgoing idiots. Turning right from the wrong lane, ignoring give way rules, reversing down the slip roads, all good stuff, but on Sunday I
witnessed stupidity writ large -- an attempted U-turn abreast the bridge deck slip road T junction.

Attempted because the culprit, a white Kia taxi (surprise, surprise) didn't make it, the driver having trouble coordinating eye with hand. Coming down from
Buhangin he started his circular swing to the left and then... then drove straight onto the end of the downhill central divide, the yellow and black painted central divide with little trees growing on it. How do these guys qualify for a license?

And -- if any of the folks down at the highways department are reading this how about investing in one of those mechanized mini road sweepers with a rotary brush mounted at the front. There's quite a number of minor but well-used streets about town where a narrow two-lane pavement has been made less narrow by the addition of strips of concrete either side. Trouble is, the strips remain unused by most traffic, the grit accumulates and solidifies into lumps and bumps and, next thing you know, the extra width is unusable.

Noticeable thanks to their absence is the relative lack of billboards. Tarpaulins have gone -- rolled up and stored until the dust settles -- but there's confusion over the word dismantle. I've yet to see a billboard dismantled in the proper sense; taken to pieces, pulled down, removed never to be seen again.

The scaffoldings remain. Blots on the cityscape. Rusting, unsightly and some very rudimentary indeed; built from lengths of slender angle-iron tack-welded together with structural strength relying on the more the merrier principle. Their owners no doubt are waiting for the concerned agencies to be distracted and looking the other way when newer, bigger tarpaulin billboards will be hoisted and foisted upon the city.

What else? Traffic lights. Aren't they great? A ripple of control in Davao's usual auto anarchy. Right enough there's still great long queues of traffic at rush hours but never mind; lean back, adjust the headrest, admire the scenery and gawk about.

On good karma
By Espie Chinel Aparis Published : 2007-03-07

I received an e-mail from our spriritual director, Rev. Fr. Al Botero, who is presently on mission in Norway, I am sharing thiswith my readers on what the Dalai Lama has to say on good karma. All it takes is a few seconds to read and think over. Do not keep this message. The "mantra" must leave your hands within 96 hours. You will get a very pleasant surprise. This is true for all - even if you are not superstitious... or of whatever religious belief or faith. Instructions for life * Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk. * When you lose, don't lose the lesson. * Follow the three R's Respect for self, Respect for others and Responsibility for all your actions. * Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck. * Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly. * Don't let a little dispute injure a great relationship. * When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it. * Spend some time alone every day. * Open arms to change but don't let go of your values. * Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. * Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll be able to enjoy it a second time. * A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for you life. * In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don't bring up the past. * Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality. * Be gentle with the earth. * Once a year, go to some place you've never been before. * Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other. * Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

happy sunday to all.

Police office goes online, can receive text message
By Ben O. Tesiorna

WITH the growing influence of Internet among Dabawenyos nowadays, the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) has decided to make use of this technology as a means to fight criminality and lawlessness and make the police more accessible to the community.

If you want to report a crime or want to provide police authorities with information but do not want to reveal your identity, then the DCPO’s latest website is the right place for you. Just log on to www.davaocitypolice.com.

Developed and created in collaboration with IDX Webdesign and Yazoola.com, the new website has the following advanced features surpassing all other police websites in the country today —- online citizen complaint form, directory of different police stations and operating units of DCPO, gallery of Philippine’s top most wanted, gallery of Davao City’s most wanted, crime prevention tips, police news and general information about DCPO.

Wherever there’s an internet access one can reach DCPO’s investigative and other non-emergency police services by just submitting a filled up "online citizen’s complaint form."

The online complaint sheet is tagged with auto-generated control number very much similar to the police blotter recorded in police stations. This serves as the initial information for the police to start investigation.

Filled up electronic complaints can either be saved or printed by the reporting individual. It will be entered into the DCPO’s database and become subject for further police action.

DCPO director Jaime Morente warned that they can track those who would deliberately file false information to the police through their Internet addresses.

Morente said they will not hesitate to expose and file charges against pranksters just like what Mayor Rodrigo Duterte did to 911 prank callers.

Complementing the new website is DCPO’s Police Online SMS Action System (POSAS) PNP TEXT 2299 where anyone can send text messages of complaints and reports to DCPO.

A visit at the website, however, showed that latest available data for crime statistics is for first quarter of 2006, or one year ago.

Listed as most wanted in Davao City were Pedro Mangayao for robbery with homicide who was sued in 1998, Eduardo Hosnan also for robbery with homicide and sued in 1998, Arnel Academia Bartolome wanted for rape in a case filed in 1999, and Henry Ganob Omandak who is wanted for robbery in an uninhabited building in 1993.

Mayor lectures studes on traffic rules, criminality
By Ben O. Tesiorna

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo assumed the role of a teacher in Sunday’s "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa" edition as he lectured to students coming from various schools and universities on traffic rules and regulations and his crusade against criminality.

In his usual self, sans the cussing, Duterte explained to the elementary, high school and college students who attended the live show the importance of following traffic rules and regulations, so as to make the city progress and develop.

In the entire one-hour program, the mayor just mentioned one "offensive" word during his interaction with the children and that is the word "bugok" when he was talking about people who do not follow rules.

Other than "bugok," Duterte was very "tame" but not for long when the topic touched on criminality in the city. The mayor told his young audience the usual stuff he blurts out when he warns criminals of the threat on their life for operating here in Davao, sans the cussing.

"Davao City is the most dangerous place for a criminal. Kaya ayaw na lang gyud mo ug sulod dinhi (If you’re a criminal, stay off Davao)," Duterte said.

The mayor advised the children to do good in school and in their community, saying that the future of Davao City lies in their hands.

Drivers warned vs ignoring pedestrian lanes
By Carlo P. Mallo

MAYOR Rodrigo Duterte warned drivers against violating traffic rules and regulations in Davao City, especially those not giving way at pedestrian lanes.

During his weekly show, Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa, he said any driver who hits a child crossing the pedestrian lane or any part of the street for that matter will be severely faulted.

Human life, according to the mayor, is above anything.

Anti-jaywalking drive will also be intensified anew in the city in a bid to instill discipline in road use. Duterte appealed to both drivers and pedestrians to simply follow traffic rules.

Drivers loading and unloading in areas not marked with a yellow box will have to face the full wrath of the law.

He said the city spent P140-million for the traffic light project, continuing with the anarchy Davao streets are getting known for is thus a lot of wasted people’s money.

Aside from road courtesy and discipline, Duterte said, the city will strike hard against those who litter on the streets. The Land Transportation Franchise and Regulatory Board 11 has long issued a Memorandum Circular imposing that all public vehicles should have a trash bin, thus there is no reason for any commuter to throw his/her garbage on the street.

He added that while he does not want to embarass a person, he will not hesitate to whack anyone he sees littering in the city. He has also tasked the police to apprehend anyone caught littering in the city

as per my info, sm is not worried at all at the construction of other malls. this building will happen. the plans are being drawn up as i write this. kilala naman nyo ang sm, there will be no press releases until the start of construction. so all we have to do is wait.

with regards to tagum, this will happen in 2008. sm opens 5 malls per year and they already have those 5 malls in the pipeline... so antay lang ang tagum.

Listed property firm Robinsons Land Corp. on Wednesday said its net profit for the fiscal year ending September 2006 rose 39.5 percent to P1.718 billion from the P1.231 billion recorded in 2005.

Robinsons Land said its gross revenues also improved 29.7 percent to P6.643 billion.

Robinsons Land president and chief operating officer Frederick D. Go said the good performance of the company's ventures in commercial centers, high-rise buildings, housing and land development and hotels was the reason for the healthy income in 2006.

"All our business units performed very well as a result of the strategic initiatives we have pursued in recent years. Each business unit has expansion programs that will grow our investment property portfolio in malls, offices, and hotels as well as increase our real estate sales of condominiums, subdivision land and houses," Go said.

The commercial centers division, which operates Robinsons Land's shopping malls contributed the largest share of revenue with P3.22 billion. As of end-2006, RLC had 18 shopping malls.

Its office and residential buildings division posted a 90-percent growth in revenues at P2.03 billion.

Go said their office buildings have attracted top BPO industry firms while its residential condominiums are selling very well due to strong domestic and international demand.

"Robinsons Cybergate Center 2 is now operational and will contribute to the rental revenue generated by office spaces owned by RLC in Robinsons Cybergate 1, Robinsons Summit Center, Robinsons Equitable Tower, and Galleria Corporate Center. The Company's total office area portfolio in the Buildings Division alone now stands at 120,000 square meters," Go said.

The housing and land development division, on the other hand, reported revenues of P488 million, a nine percent rise from a year earlier.

Among the ongoing projects of Robinsons Homes are Bloomfields Tagaytay, Bloomfields Davao, Richmond Hills and Monte Del Sol both in Cagayan De Oro, Mirado Dos in San Fernando and Costa Verde in Davao City.

Robinsons Land's hotels division revenue spiked 81 percent to P904 million, primarily due to the full operation of the deluxe 260 room Crowne Plaza Hotel within the Galleria Complex last year.

As of September last year, RLC's hotels division had an average occupancy rate of 68 percent. Other hotels operated by the company are Holiday Inn Galleria Manila, Cebu Midtown Hotel; and Robinsons Apartelle. - GMANews.TV (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/28017/RLC-net-income-up-39-in-FY-06)

I was tempted to tell @cheersmate how dangerous Davao City is, for the........CROOKS! :D

a new building will be constructed at the back of the present sm city davao...the ground level and upper level will house high end stores...the upper floors...YES UPPER FLOORS (u read it right...hehehehehe) will house call centerS....this building will be connected to the main mall by a night strip that will house restaurants, bars, and other gimmik places....

this will complement the condominium that is being built by DMCI right next to sm city davao...bu they will not consume all the land at the back....they have plans in building something right next to the IT building....(i know what they will build..but for sticky reasons, i still cannot divulge it...)

I remember way back late 90's meron "The Place" across SMCity , I thought the next entertainment hub after MTS will be in the SM area but the crises stalled the construction of The Place( meron ng nga skeletal form) and eventually totally removed .

btw how far and big is SM pala? from what i can see it's just the cyclone fence , the area beyond that SM still owns it?

Only in Davao City....

When hungry, dial 911, Duterte tells Davao City kids
By Edith Regalado
The Philippine Star 03/12/2007

DAVAO CITY – The number "911" is for kids, too. Not only for emergency assistance, but also for free meals.

Saying that he’s the "father of all the children in the city," Mayor Rodrigo Duterte urged children, if they are hungry and don’t have money, especially in school, to just dial 911 and they would get free meals.

Or the children, he said, can just approach any 911 police patrol car. "I’m instructing the police to bring the children to the nearest food centers, including Jollibee and McDonalds, and charge everything to me," he said in his weekly TV show yesterday.

"You can eat anywhere and charge it to me. But only if you really have nothing and you are really hungry," he told a group of schoolchildren who joined him at the local ABS-CBN station for his TV program "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa."

Davao City boasts of being the only Philippine city with a 911 emergency response system, similar to those in the United States and Canada.

The city’s 911 system has a 24-hour call center and a fleet of fully equipped ambulances and firetrucks.

The Davao Light and Power Co. has provided it with a database and tracking system to enable 911 personnel to immediately respond to any emergency.

During his show, Duterte also discussed with the schoolchildren the city’s newly installed modern traffic signaling system, traffic rules and the penalties for violations.

P10-B power projects set
Plants to solve Davao region brownout problem

By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO

BUTUAN CITY — The power problem that has plagued Mindanao will soon to be a thing of the past when the construction of two hydroelectric power plants worth at least P10 billion is completed in Mindanao, this was learned yesterday.

The hydro plants is expected to provide the power need of electric cooperatives, particularly the Davao Light and Power Co. in Southern Mindanao region, and nearby areas.

The two power plants are the P5 billion Sibulan hydropower plant in Sibulang, Davao del Sur, which will generate 42.5 megawatts to supply 32 percent of the present power needs of Davao Light, and the Tamugan hydroelectric power facility which will cost another P5 billion to build and would generate 30.5 megawatts, it was also learned.

Construction of the facility will commence before the end of this month, said Rene Ronquillo, president of Hedcor. Both plants will be built by Hedcor, Inc. a subsidiary of Aboitiz Equity Ventures.

Nope...Marikina is using Rescue 1-6-1.

Davao is the only city in the country which follows not the 911's phone num only but the system itself.

So it's not all about the phone number only! Any city can register 911 as their emergency phone number.

Davao's Central911 uses an ECAD System or the Electronic Computer Aided Dispatch System. A software developed by the Davao Light and Power Company which is being used by Central 911 to pinpoint the exact location of the emergency.

It utilizes GIS maps plotted with grid lines to triangulate location of the caller . It also captures stores and recalls data in an electronic database.

Police warned: Implement seat belt law or get punished
By Romeo R. Braceros Jr.

MAYOR Rodrigo Duterte yesterday vowed to punish members of the police who will fail to implement the law on seat belt. Duterte said he observed that some members of the police had not been faithful implementing the law as only the poor drivers were caught. "If they (policemen) cannot implement the law fairly, then they must not anymore implement the law," he. He urged those who might have observed some members of the police of reneging their duties in implementing the law to report the incident and identify the law enforcers. He assured those who would report any incident that they would get proteted. "I will ask the policeman to explain his side on the complaint with regards to the seat-belt law. If I find his explanation not meritorious, I will impose punishment on him," he said.

New investments needed in power sector: DOE
By Carlo P. Mallo
Cub Reporter

AT THE rate of Mindanao's development, new investments in the power generation sector should be encouraged lest there will not be enough by 2009.

Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla said this during the recent Economic Briefing in Davao City.

Lotilla said the present sources of energy in the island are not sufficient to meet the demands by 2009.

The main reason, according to Lotilla, is that old power plants in the island need to be rehabilitated or replaced with new ones.

The threat of not having enough power generated in Mindanao was what instigated Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC) to prepare for an additional supply of over 400 million kilowatt hours (kWh).

According to DLPC chair Alfonso Y. Aboitiz, Hedcor will be able to supply over 32 percent of the current consumption of DLPC. Last week, DLPC inked a deal with Hedcor Inc. to build a new hydropower plant.

Hedcor, a wholly owned subsidiary of Philippine Hydropower Corporation, is one of the country's top producers of clean energy. Investing over P10 billion, Hedcor will put up a hydroelectric plant tapping the energy produced by Sibulan River. Construction is set to begin this year and is to be completed by 2009.

Lotilla earlier said that Mindanao should look for alternative sources of energy, as hydro power plants are not as reliable compared to others.

Aboitiz was quick to reply saying that it has studied the possibility of the river drying up. He assured that even on a worst-case scenario, the hydro power plant to be put up by Hedcor would be able to supply the substantial energy requirements of DLPC.

Moreover, Aboitiz assures the public that despite the huge amount involved in the project, no additional value added tax would be passed on to the consumers since it is a hydropower source.

Aboitiz added that the project would actually provide cheaper electricity to the public compared if DLPC would source its electricity from other sources.
Next year, Hedcor would take on another hydroelectric project that would tap the Tamugan water channels. Expected date of completion for the project is in 2010.

The two projects, aside from assuring additional power sources for the DLPC come 2009, would also provide additional employment and revenues to Davao City.

Davao Jaywalkers Get a Break from Duterte

DAVAO CITY — Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said Sunday that jaywalkers need not spend time in jail. Instead, a lecture on obeying traffic laws should do to punish them and, hopefully, stop repeat offenses. A current law considers jaywalking as a criminal offense, which is “silly,” Duterte said in his TV program “Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa” Sunday.

Although his opinion would not stop the Davao City Police from implementing the existing law, the tough-talking mayor said he would rather have the police take offenders to police stations and give them a lecture. The police need not even put the offenders’ names in the police blotter.

“I don’t want to shame people,” Duterte explained. The mayor believes that such a minor offense might cause trouble for people; they might, for instance, end up having a difficult time procuring clearances in the future because of the jaywalking record.

The mayor also took a different tack too as far as enforcing the seatbelt law is concerned. He thinks that with the way the police has been enforcing the law, which he thinks is rather selectively, it may be better not to enforce the law at all.

The leeway Duterte was willing to give these particular offenders is rather surprising given his sternness against people violating his policies and the law.

Last year, the mayor implemented the waste-segregation project, which aimed to inculcate in Davaoenos the practice of segregating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.

This is a continuing program where the mayor himself has been caught issuing warnings many times for the violators. Even a Grade Six pupil in yesterday’s program, who asked him about the penalty for littering, got a taste of the mayor’s harshness. “If I catch you, you will surely get a whipping, five times,” the mayor said.

But the mayor’s soft stance on traffic violators may have something to do with the fact that Davao folks are still adjusting to the new traffic system introduced to the city two months ago.

The system was reported initially to have caused more traffic jams than the old system, forcing Duterte to apologize for the disorderly outcome of the first test run in December. The 143-million pesos traffic system is among the mayor’s major projects. (Cheryll D. Fiel/davaotoday.com)

Duterte elated by park opening
By Grace L. Plata

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte is elated about the way the Greenbelt Park has turned out especially so that it is the city's children who first savored its beauty, City Administrator Wendel Avisado said.

Avisado said Duterte, who graced Monday's soft opening of the park, was happy to see kids aside from some city officials during the event, saying that it should be so since the park was made for the children and the generations to come.

According to Avisado, the mayor commended the efforts of Davao artist and sculptor Kublai P. Millan who made unique pieces to enhance the beauty of the park, the interplay of plants and concrete structures that Architect Ed Viacrusis has done, and the whole park project management headed by Engineer Liza Madrazo including that of 911 personnel who water the plants everyday.

Avisado, however, said the park will be closed after Araw ng Dabaw as construction will resume to finish other parts of the park like the Visitor's Center, Children's Park, Plant and Flower Gallery, Cascading Falls, Interactive Falls and the Glass Falls.

The areas opened to the public throughout the "Araw" celebration include the Philippine Rainforest, the Amphitheater, the Promenade, Viewing Bridge, Shady Plaza, Great Lawn and the Pine Grove.

Many passengers still unaware of 1st class airport services in Davao, says PAL exec
by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (14 March) -- Many airline passengers are still not aware of the first class services they get through the Davao International Airport.

Philippine Airlines executive vice president Atty Domingo Duerme who is also president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) bared the lack of awareness among the travelers of Mindanao on the use of the Davao airport for their international trip.

He said that check in through services among international airlines are the same service that they get in other international airports outside of the country.

"What is offered in other international airports we offer it here in Davao," he said.

He bared that travelers for the US or Japan after checking in at the Davao International Airport can immediately check in their connecting flight to the US or Japan.

"With this service the passenger will not be bothered of cargo transfer and booking for the next flight because it is already being served by airline upon check in at the DIA," he said.

He also said that travelers from Davao will no longer stay overnight in Manila and spend for accommodation with the availability of flights for them to catch up with their international destination.

He said these are just among the services that they want Mindanao travelers to experience.

The Gateway Davao Blitz is a project spearheaded by the Department of Tourism and the Air Transportation Office with the private sector compose of the airline industries, the DCCCII and the Mindanao Business Council.

The promotional blitz will run from April to June and this will be brought to the key cities of the Davao region in Tagum, Mati and Digos. It will also go to other areas outside of Southern Mindanao in General Santos, Marbel, Cotabato City, Sultan Kudarat, Tacurong, Cagayan de Oro City, Kidapawan, Bukidnon, Butuan, and Surigao.

The team will also present the program during the meeting of the Chamber, travel exchange during exhibit and business meeting.

To formalize the partnership, the MinBC and DCCCII will take the lead in forging memorandum of understanding with the proponents - Department of Tourism, Air Transportation Office and other private entities, endorse the program to all concerned groups (under MinBC and DCCCII and present the program to generate support. Gov't, private sector eye more passengers for Davao airport
by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (14 March) -- The government and the private sector in the region are joining hands to look for the remaining million passengers that will increase demand, investments and international flights of the underused Davao International Airport.

Department of Tourism XI regional director Sonia Garcia in a press briefing with Davao business reporters on Tuesday at Krua Thai of SM City said they realized that passengers are not yet aware of the potential of DIA as an international gateway.

She said the services are right there at DIA and passengers from here could check through till their international destinations.

She said the total seats capacity both for domestic and international flights of airlines at DIA totaled to 2.282 million but actual travelers that are being served by the airport is only about a million each year.

"We just want to hit a 10 percent increase of the current capacity or about 80 percent load on the average," she said.

In a data sheet provided to the press, it indicated the annual available seats capacity as follows, for domestic with grand total annually at 2,097,472 with the Air Philippines available total capacity of 429,520, Asian Spirit, 31,200, Cebu Pacific, 1,029,600, Philippine Airlines 607,152.

The grand total for international annual seats capacity of 185,224 with Asian Spirit (Davao-Palau and Palau-Davao) at 30,264, SilAir (Davao-Singapore and Singapore (via Cebu) and (Singapore-Davao (via Cebu) and Singapore-Davao) 103,378, and Sriwajaya (Davao-Manado and Manado-Davao) 3,562.

These are ready seats not all taken she said and the need to bring them down to prospective travelers would change the face of traffic at the DIA.

Laucnhing the marketing program for DIA dubbed as Gateway Davao Blitz, she said there will be the partners who will do promotional blitz, host exhibits/booths in malls of key cities in Mindanao, production of promo collaterals as well as conduct comparative study between the costs of flying out via DIA and direct flights to Manila in going out to other countries in the world.

The DIA, she said is more than equipped to cater to the needs of inbound and outbound flights where 40 airlines were given landing rights.

She said it boasts of an International Airport that serves five international airlines that flies to Palau (Asian Spirit), Indonesia (Swirijaya), Singapore (Cebu Pacific and Silk Air and Hongkong (Cebu Pacific).

She said that to make things happen, there is a need to get more people to use the DIA and with people getting interested to Davao and Mindanao because of connections it would pre-empt the putting up of new hotels bringing in more economic activities. (PIA XI) [top]

imo ang problema dito yung tourism facilities ,which Sonia should address first and tourists will come .If we have good tourists destination w/ good facilities theirs no problem filling those seats .How can we invite them if we lack hotel rooms , convention center and lack of tourists destinations?

Being computer unfriendly I don't know if this will work - or even that you'll want to read it !

Midnight ramblin’

Let’s start with a smile.A topical smile.According to Ambrose Bierce’s The Devil’s Dictionary – published in 1911 – a vote is ‘The instrument and symbol of a freeman’s power to make a fool of himself and a wreck of his country.’

There was an interesting snippet in Saturday’s Bzzzz feature;an anonymous (naturally) spiller of beans climbing aboard the current kotong wagon to fling yet more mud at the authorities. (And I hope that ABS-CBN know what they’re up to – quite a few of the cops allegedly on the take looked genuinely surprised at having wads of currency thrust at them) But,what Anon of Bzzzz didn’t ask was the Big Question – why do so many trucks and hauliers move their cargoes in the middle of the night ?

It’s not because of the traffic – this is Mindanao, not the jampacked freeways and autoroutes of Europe or North America. And look at the night-time hazards;apart from vehicle checkpoints every 500 meters there’s carabou and pedestrians on the loose, the latter frequently tanked up on Tanduay or similar. There’s motorists cruising around without lights, trailers parked without warning triangles and flat tires being replaced in situ,i.e.,in the middle of the carriageway.

No;only a fool travels at night on Philippine roads.Or someone with something to hide.An illegal load.An absence of paperwork. An overloaded truck. An unroadworthy truck or fly-by-night dumpers looking for a dark corner to jettison their load of cesspit sewage, building rubble or used oil. You’d be amazed at the number of tankers creeping about the roads at night;reversing down a quiet beach, sneaking along a country track, looking for a place to open the stopcock.

UN fact-finder Philip Alston took quite a bashing from some quarters last week but what tickled me was fellow scribbler Eli Lamsen writing on Tuesday that the Philippines was ‘still reeling from the indictment of UN special reporter Philip Alston.’

Well Eli,I don’t know where you were standing but there was precious little reeling going on in my neck of the woods. In fact there was a distinct air of indifference about, perhaps tinged with a hint indignation.

Why ? Firstly, what right did the UN have,in the person of Philip Alston,to poke its nose into the internal affairs of the Philippines ? Second;setting aside travel time, sleeping, feeding,’freshening up’ – that quaint American euphemism for CR time – and ten days is just about how long it takes for the ordinary mortal to cash his travelers cheques, let alone pen an in-depth report on a highly controversial topic. No,no reeling Eli.Maybe a quiet bristling.

Bio-fuels and in January we were treated to headlines like ‘Bio-fuel law to cut fuel prices.’ (Representative Juan Zubiri) and ‘Zubiri allays fears that the new bio-fuel law will cause an increase in the price of diesel fuel.’

Monday,Chevron Philippines announced that the price of ALL fuels will increase to accommodate the cost of bringing on stream bio-fuels.Fancy that. And we were looking forward to a rollback.Silly we.

Lastly,on Wednesday, promo’d at the top of the front page,’Page B4;Bloom,Cruz,give each other a tongue bath.’ Turn to page B4 and dammit……NO PHOTOS !

Davao makes bid to become top gateway to Mindanao
By Moses Billacura

DAVAO CITY—The Department of Tourism launched yesterday a tourism program that aims to make this city a gateway to Mindanao.

The department’s regional director, Sonia Garcia, said the program is designed to increase the number of arrivals at the Davao International Airport ahead of the approval of more flights into this city.

She revealed the experience during the Asean Forum in Cebu when delegates from Brunei Darussalam and other BIMP-EAGA member-countries flew to the country via Davao.

The tourism department has linked up with the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, headed by lawyer Domingo Duerme, who is also vice president for Mindanao of Philippine Airlines; Air Transportation Office; Mindanao Business Council; Cebu Pacific, Asian Spirit, SilkAir, Sriwijaya and Air Philippines to ensure the success of the program.

“We have to take a look at the Davao International Airport. Here, you can already check through to Hong Kong, Japan and other countries,” said Garcia, who added that 40 airlines have been given landing rights in the airport and its seat capacity has increased to 185,224 every year.

Wanda Teo of the National Association of International Travel Agents said they are currently negotiating with Hong Kong Air to include Davao in its route and they hope their plans will materialize soon.

SilkAir, a sister company of Singapore Airlines, started slow with only two flights a week 10 years ago but by 2005, it has a daily flight schedule, said SilkAir Davao spokesman Gian Carlo Caguiat.

Duerme said PAL passengers can enjoy check through if they intend to go to Singapore, Japan or to the United States.

Also in the works is the plan to make the city a “plus destination” with flights by the Royal Brunei Airlines, according to Mindanao Economic Development Council official Romeo Montenegro after the signing of an agreement.

With a big number of Muslims in Mindanao, Montenegro said that a flight from Bandar Seri Begawan to Middle East countries is also being planned.

Koreans have also been hopping around Mindanao, first coming to Davao City after Asian Spirit Airline came up with a package dubbed “I Love Golf, “ a three-day charter flight plan in partnership with Apo View Hotel.

Garcia added that Duty Free Philippines will also open an outlet at the arrival area of the Davao Airport which will be ready by the first week of April.

Datu Bago: A Pirate or a Patriot? (1)

(This lecture was originally delivered before the Rotary Club of Central Davao last July 31, 2006. Given its relevance and the continuing debate about Datu Bago’s historical importance, this abridged article should provide some clarification.) * * * * * One hundred and fifty eight (158) years after Datu Bago was removed as ruler of Davao, the issue of whether he was a pirate or a patriot continues to ring with controversy. Most local historians believe that the debate should have been resolved by now, thirty-seven years after the late Davao City mayor Elias B. Lopez issued in 1969 an executive order creating the Datu Bago Awards. His inspiration to establish the award-giving body apparently stemmed from the claim the former Davao ruler was a Bagobo. Datu Bago’s ethnic identity no doubt appealed to the mayor, whose roots are Bagobo. But adding motivation to this notion, perhaps, are two other factors: (1) the ruler’s resolve to defend his territory and (2) his willingness to take the cause of his own people at all cost. The central theme here is still the question whether Datu Bago, because of his involvement in historic raids in Christian villages and regions known to be loyal to Spain, could be labeled a pirate, or was he a patriot for defending his territory. His image was also tarnished by religious prejudice, part of which can be traced to the centuries-old conflict between Islamists and Christians. Determining Datu Bago’s historical worth can best be appreciated by studying the attendant events occurring in his time. The available records should shed light whether piracy, as a matter of fact, was an acceptable conduct in a civil society or was it a practice that was abhorred even in its more tolerable forms. On a national perspective, it is significant to study how piracy in Datu Bago’s lifetime was perceived under Spain. It is a well-known fact that during his rule of Davao, piracy in the Sulu seas and adjacent oceans was a regular occurrence. The raids conducted in the name of piracy included the enslaving of women, the looting of fortresses, and the destruction of coastline villages loyal to the Spanish authorities or were embracing Catholicism. Locally, determining Datu Bago’s historical role, either as pirate or patriot, can provide a better understanding of the significance or the illogicality of the Datu Bago Awards. On the other hand, confirming his label as a pirate the way we see it now makes for an even heated debate. Despite his popular status in Davao folklore, Datu Bago’s place in historiography remains a bone of contention, and the primary reason for this is the lack of understanding about his exploits. The datu’s stature in history has often been obscured by misconception and, at times, interspersed between myth and fact. With only limited data from extant records, misreading could not be discounted; in fact, it was this erroneous view that gave rise to conjectures that have become the questionable issues in Datu Bago’s life. Obviously, the mistaken belief about his persona has not been designed to remove the Muslim chieftain from the roster of local heroes, but to depict him in the light of available data. The unofficial date of Datu Bago’s birth date is 1806; this was at the turn of the 19th century when piracy was starting to peak after Muslim warriors defeated the Spaniards in the 1775 Balangingi invasion (Sulu). Moro atrocities committed in Christian enclaves were also on the rise, and the maritime raids conducted by pirates, especially those under Chinese pirate Koxinga (Limahong), affected the major sea lanes along the western section of the Philippines. These attacks against trading vessels were concerns that angered European colonial masters. During the same period, piracy had become a worldwide phenomenon. Known by various names-privateer, buccaneer, or corsair-over time the pirates would launch maritime attacks without the knowledge of their handlers who were traditionally their sovereign rulers. A privateer, on the other hand, was primarily a pirate commissioned by the government to seize or destroy a merchant vessel of another nation; he was used as a cheap means of weakening the enemy by frequenting customary shipping routes. In theory, no privateer with a letter of marque on h

TRIBUTE TO DAVAO CITY’S GRAND DAME
By Josie San Pedro

DOñA CARMEN M. SORIANO’s legacy to Davao City, as Chairman Emeritus of Davao Beautiful Foundation and as a Likas Yaman awardee of the Philippines, finds meaning and continuity in the Gawad Doña Carmen M. Soriano Sa Kapaligiran. The award gives recognition to chosen barangays who were able to sustain their Clean and Green Programs, based on the memorandum of Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte in September 2006 to all barangays to participate in the program according to a set of criteria, in commemoration of Doña Carmen’s centennial birthday last January 27. During her lifetime, Doña Carmen was a tireless advocate of the environment, an amazing and wonderful person who touched everyone with her kind heart and concealed an enormous strength in her frail body. As Chair of Davao Beautiful Foundation she was at her 2nd floor office in City Hall early to map out her activities for the day: visiting and improving the pocket parks around the city, supervising the weeding and replanting; encouraging business establishments to clean their surrounding and to put ornamental plants on the sidewalks fronting their place of business; requesting homeowners to grow flowering plants, and subdivisions to showcase gardens. Davao became known as the City of Flowers because of her efforts; and her dream to make it the cleanest and greenest city in the country, became a reality. It indeed became Davao Beautiful. The program last March 12, after the flag raising ceremony at City Hall Drive, was coordinated by the Offices of the City Mayor, the City Administrator and Councilor Susabel Reta. Engr. Elisa P. Madrazo gave the overview of the morning activity. Family friend and civic leader Patria G. Montemayor was the keynote speaker. All of Doña Carmen’s children, Rosamar S. Peralta, Francisco S., Sonia S. Gempesaw, Alberto S., and Marie S. Tionko were in attendance to present the cash awards and prizes to the lucky barangays. Alberto M. Soriano gave the response in behalf of the family. The winning barangays were: Matina Crossing, received the P50,000 prize; Dumoy, P30,000; and Calinan Poblacion, P20,000. Bgys. 8-A, 9-A, and Lizada received certificates and special prizes. The prizes were received by their barangay captains/ representatives. The Clean and Green Program of the City sets a sterling example of what ordinary citizens with dedication and initiative can do to help clean the environment, a significant step towards its preservation for future generations. Other family members of Doña Carmen present were: Daughters-in-law Norma B. Soriano, and Dalisay R. Soriano, sons-in-law, Atty Carmelo Gempesaw and Vicente H. Tionko; grandchildren Tina Tionko, Tommy Tionko, Tachi Peralta, grandniece Marilyn M. Posadas and daughter, Maluchi Gahol with son, Christian, and grandnephew, Simeon Marfori.

70 years and still growing

WE’VE had seventy years to bloom, to grow and to modernize. For Davao City, 70 years may be short for its achievements - economic, social, cultural, educational and historical. The efforts of its leaders to make this sprawling metropolis an investment hub have filtered down to residents who have enjoyed a better quality of life. The past couple of years have seen the development of the city, not only on infrastructure but also on framing laws, most of which are trailblazing, that ensure the security of each citizen. The government projects this year, such as the traffic signalization and the PTA Park - though yet unfinished, show that we can be at par with other big cities. In addition to the Emergency Center 911, we can truly be proud of our city. We are also reaping the fruits of the past years’ efforts of the private sector in luring investors and tourists to visit Davao. Last year, the city was host to the very successful Asean Tourism Forum, an event which opened Davao City to our neighbors in Asia and which, to this day, is still being talked about. Although the tourism sector is too humble to admit they have scored big time, we can see how tourists have come to the city and enjoyed their stay here. In an editorial six years ago, we said: “Investors come in to pour not only their money but also to co-exist with Davaoeños in their lifetime. Noteworthy to mention, too, is the greater participation of private and non-government institutions in the overall makeup of the city’s economic and social landscape. Given the local government’s lack of funds, NGOs and private organizations helped augment the delivery of basic services by establishing rural and agricultural infrastructures. Businessmen who went out of their way to render civic activities and their counterparts in the government sector also contributed to the city’s program to build sustainable communities and barangays. With opportunities lining the city’s path for it to globally compete; every moment of celebration must be coupled with concrete actions and direction heading upwards. Moving on means staying put in the midst of crisis, keeping afloat while bracing for the waves and burning bridges behind. Moving up means defying the forces which pull down Davao City’s achievement; zooming out from the chaos which stops its strides.”

oh we have a new davaeno, madayaw .... are you the one writing for sunstar?

In theory, no privateer with a letter of marque on hand could be charged with piracy, since it was recognized by international law. (To be continued)

DDH performs 100 kidney transplants
Published : 2007-03-14

NEARLY a decade after performing the very first kidney transplant in Mindanao, Davao Doctors Hospital’s pioneering Kidney Transplant Team has reached the 100 kidney transplants mark - a feat unsurpassed by any other hospital outside of Metro Manila.

Davao Doctors Hospital proudly celebrates this milestone and credits its staff of nephrologists and surgeons in the specialty, and also the visiting nephrologists from neighboring provinces who trust that the hospital is equipped with the complete facilities and equipment needed to treat their patients.

A DOH-accredited kidney transplant center; the hospital attracts patients from all over the Mindanao region and even abroad; one of which was Federico Sta. Cruz, a 68 year old retiree based in Maryland, U.S.A. Federico suffered from chronic kidney disease due to complications from his diabetes.

For years, he managed this condition through regular dialysis, a life support treatment which artificially cleans the blood two to three times a week. When his kidney damage had reached the end-staged, Federico’s doctor in the U.S. advised him to go home to the Philippines to seek a kidney donor and a reputable kidney transplant center.

On January 23, 2007, Federico had a successful kidney transplant in Davao Doctors Hospital, making him the hospital’s 100th kidney transplant patient. Admittedly, treatments like dialysis and transplantation are largely unaffordable, which is why the recently concluded World Kidney Day’s thrust was prevention and early detection as the best options against kidney disease.

DDH’s Kidney Transplant Team supports this advocacy and encourages the public to have simple, inexpensive tests on urine, blood and blood pressure to reveal early signs of kidney problems. Through early detection, the development of chronic kidney disease can be delayed or prevented.

Welcome to Davao

Davao City

Endowed with a variety of picturesque landscape, Davao's topography dazzles: fruit plantation and orchid farms mantle volcano-fed hills and valleys. Virgin forests nurture rare wildlife. Coral highest peak mirror flat water. And the country's highest peak magnificently lords over the hinterland.

Just enchanting is its brilliant tapestry of harmony, woven from the diverse cultural threads of its people. In Davao, the contemporary fuses with the traditional as migrant settlers from all over the the country co-exist in peace with a fairly large expatriate community and numerous ethnic tribes who continue to live as they did centuries ago.

Davao is an anchor destination and one of the 7,000 times more islands that make up the Philippine archipelago. It is a natural haven for both sedate and daring pursuit.

Island Garden City of Samal

A coastal paradise located at the heart of Davao Gulf. A Haven to those seeking solace in an unspoiled and natural ambiance and to those who are in quest for great adventure and extreme challenges with nature, its white and pristine beaches and diverse natural attractions combined with the warmth and hospitality of its people spell out its potential to be a world-class eco-tourism destination in this part of Southeastern Mindanao.

Aside from its awesome coral garden, one may not see a floral garden in the island as yet. But as a new city, the Island Garden City of Samal is a large economic base, and an international gateway, IGaCoS is the best place for would-be investors. it boasts of a superior quality island beach area, large areas of land suitable for development, and a highly receptive local government and community.

The Island Garden City of Samal is one of the three (3) cities of Davao del Norte. its unique birth was made out of the merger of the three (3) former municipalities of the island namely, Babak, Samal and Kaputian. The official name is Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCos). The name speaks for its and for what a place is destined to become - an island cluster, emerging to become the international center and financial district for the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines - East ASEAN Growth Area) as laid out in the Davao Integrated Development Program (DIDP).

Davao Del Norte

Welcome to Davao del Norte. Touted as Davao Region's Agriculture, Culture and Ecology (ACE) Tourism Destination, Davao del Norte holds the distinction of having vast expanse of banana plantations in the region. Blessed with rich fertile land and other natural resources and the fact that it is located in a typoon-free belt made Davao del Norte not only productive but also charmingly attractive to investors and tourists alike.

The socio-demography of theprovince presents as a good case of multi-culturalism where the Indigenous People (Lumad), Muslims and Christians live together in a developing social atmosphere. The Ata-Manobo tribe for example all over this predominantly Christian-inhabited province is a living testimony of a wonderful synergy that forges harmonious assimilative process while respecting the uniqueness of their cultural differences. Here, there is unity in diversity.

Tagum City is one of the province's three component cities. Its strategic location and the dynamism of economic activity make for an ideal investor's haven. It is not only the seat of the Provincial Government but the latest establishment of the New Christ the King Cathedral even made more famous for its Giant Wooden Rosary attracts pilgrims and presents a certain religious truth that is, socio-eco-political integrity is sustained by people's deep sense of spirituality.

The Island Garden City of Samal is promoted as an island of Davao Gulf or mistakenly a seascape of Davao City. As to this date, the islands comprising the Island Garden City of Samal still form part of the territorial integrity of Davao del Norte. Thus, the province promoted it as an island destination to complement the province's highland attractions. It is safer then to state it that way. We therefore take pride of its fantastic dive sites, marine parks, white sandy beaches and world-class resorts.

Panabo City has two transnational wharves operated by two giant banana companies namely: TADECO and STANFILCO. With these facilities banana has become big business in Davao del Norte to supply the lucrative markets of Japan, Korea, Red China, ASEAN neighbors and the Middle East. More and more of our highland communities are now developed into "sweet" Cavendish because existing banana plantations located at the flat alluvial plains are not enough to meet the continuing demands.

Equally endowed with nature's bountiful resources, the eight (8) Inland municipalities of Davao del Norte do not only produce agricultural products but also have their scenic spots and tourist destinations. Kapalong and the newly created Municipality of San Isidro have hundreds of documented caves and have already earned for them a moniker SPELUNKERS HAVEN in Mindanao during the 3rd National Caving Congress last three years ago. If the province of Palawan is made popular by its subterranean river, Davao del Norte is also blest with its BUCAY CAVE - an underground waterfalls. Sto. Tomas prides itself with Ecology Park for their Waste Management Program.

New Corella has cascading waterfalls and mountain view parks. Braulio E. Dujali has rice granaries. And Asuncion has discovered the secret cure of AIDS - the BFAD certified production of VIRGIN COCONUT OLD. While Carmen is reckoned with her World War II historical significance, the BATTLE OF ISING.

All of these man-made and natural wonders are what made Davao del Norte an Agriculture, Culture and Ecology (ACE) Tourism DEstination in DAVAO Region and in the world.

Davao Del Sur

Sprawled along the shores of Southeastern Mindanao, Davao Del Sur is a place of natural wonders and rarities. It boasts of the country's highest peak - Mt. Apo, the most prized Philippine orchid like the Vanda Sanderiana, some of the exotic fruits and the endangered Philippine Eagle.

Davao del Sur is home to a host of ethnic groups whose culture and way of life have been preserved. These are the Bagobos, the Mandayas, the Mansakas, the Atas, the Kalagans, the Tagakaolos and the Mangguangans. Their arts and crafts are on display in museums and shops.

There is a wide choice of white sand beaches and resorts. In the city, there are numerous hotels and inns. Dining is good and varied. Nightlife is fun.

Some of the popular sports activities are golf, water sports and mountain climbing.

Davao Oriental

The verdant forests and blue crystal clear waters serving as backdrop to the winding roads are what greet you upon entering this quiet coastal Province set at the back end of the country.

Perhaps the thought of its backdoor and corner end setting makes one wonder how life in this Province is catching up on the fast-changing trends of the urban centers.

For those who have not set foot on the province of Davao Oriental, this is the easternmost tip of the country and this is where the sun shines first. By rough estimate, sunrise here comes eight minutes earlier than sunrise in Manila, or three minutes earlier than sunrise in Davao City.

If one thinks the hours here are slow and the days are lagging behind. Think again.

Compostela Valley

Compostela Valley is blessed with nature's magnificent work of art. It brims with natural attractions like beaches, waterfalls, forests, mountain ranges, caves, lakes, rivers, hot and cold springs.. all found in the province.

The province is also proud of its people and cultural heritage... a varied blend of ethnicity and dominance. To be in Compostela Valley is to experience a blend of sight and sound that defines a place and a people, pulsing with life yet reserved in spirit.

The Provincial Government believes in marketing tourism responsibly. ComValeños want you to explore and revel on nature's finest without destroying the environment.

Our choices within the province are almost limitless. We believe that we have something that caters to everyone's enthusiasm... all waiting for the adventurous spirit in you. Thus, we see our province as an Eco-Adventure Tourism Destination.

davao day tomorrow... happy anniversary davao city! mabuhay araw ng davao! (translate>> love you dvaao!:D)

Editorial

Davao makes bid to become top gateway to Mindanao

Many Passengers Unaware of 1st Class Airport Services in Davao

“What is offered in other international airports we offer it here in Davao,” he said.

He bared that travelers for the US or Japan after checking in at the Davao International Airport can immediately check in their connecting flight to the US or Japan.

“With this service the passenger will not be bothered of cargo transfer and booking for the next flight because it is already being served by airline upon check in at the DIA,”

Davao Studes Win in Smart Wireless Apps Awards

Students from Ateneo de Davao developed the Vehicle Emergency Locator (VEL) that sends an alert message to a cellphone when a car’s airbag is used during accidents. The program can also send out a phone message that tells the GPS location the car.

Launched in August 2004, the SWEEP Innovation and Excellence Awards aims “to give budding engineering students an opportunity to shine by recognizing their technology know-how and ingenuity,” says Rolando G. Peña, SMART’s network services division head.

New international airline to open Davao-Hong Kong route
Tuesday, March 13 2007 @ 02:48 PM GMT

Tourism
An international airline will open the Davao-Hong Kong and Hong Kong-Davao route to serve travellers from those areas.

Wanda Teo, president of the National Association of Independent Travel Agencies (NAITAS), said Hong Kong Air is currently working the papers for its landing rights at the Davao International Airport (DIA).

Teo said the airline is planning to launch two flights per week from Davao to Hong Kong and vise-versa. These flights are set every Tuesday and Sunday every week using Boeing aircraft which has 164 seating capacity, 156 for the economy class and eight for business class.

She said processing of the papers is slated to be finished this month and the aircraft will probably start serving the DIA on May or June this year.

Air Transportation Office (ATO) manager Frederick San Felix, on the other hand, said the Asian Spirit is set to launch its I Golf Club next week where the airline would serve travellers originating from Davao to Inchon, Korea . Asian Spirit will start operating its direct Davao-Hong Kong flight on April, Felipe said.

Air Philippines, meanwhile, had started its Davao-Manila-Korea chartered flight last March 5. (PNA)

Mati becomes city in Davao

MATI officials are now preparing to celebrate the elevation of this town into a component city of Davao. Michelle Rabat, executive assistant of Mayor Francisco Rabat, said they will hold their celebration once President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signs House Bill 6023 converting Mati into a component city.

HB 6023 was authored by Davao Oriental Representative Mayo Almario and sponsored by Senator Alfredo Lim. The Lower House passed the bill last year. Last February 7, the Senate has finally approved on its third and final reading the bill making the capital town of Davao Oriental a city.

Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr., meanwhile, suggested that a policy be adopted for all capital towns of provinces, which have no city be converted to cities.

Another call center to operate in Davao
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THIS would be an opportunity for qualified and aspiring call center agents in Davao City.

A representative of a Manila-based call center company has already identified a site for their operation in the city this year.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage

But Teolulo T. Pasawa, National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center (Nerbac) director of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Southern Mindanao, refused to identify the company.

"Hindi ko muna sasabihin, but the main reason for that investment is the establishment of an IT park here, Damosa has been declared as an IT park," Pasawa told Sun.Star Davao.

Pasawa said Nerbac's main function is to look for prospect investors.

"We are now concentrating on investment promotion," he said, adding that DTI's trade and investment mission to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia recently aims to attract investors.

The mission, conducted on February 23 to March 5, 2007, was a joint project of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Mindanao Economic and Development Council (Medco), Mindanao Business Council (MinBC), the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII), and DTI-Southern Mindanao.

The itinerary covered the cities of Riyadh, Dammam, and Jeddah.

Promoting Mindanao products and generating awareness about Mindanao as a potential supplier of goods and services are among the mission's objectives.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is one of the industries that the local government unit of Davao City and the private sector is actively pushing.

Ledesma: Why do Koreans love Davao?
By Jun Ledesma
Sunbursts

HAVE you ever wondered why the Koreans like it here? Koreans actually are the more adventurous type of tourists. Toughened by their harsh mode of discipline peculiar to their culture, Koreans actually can be very engaging. They have no hang-ups, no pretensions of superiority which some of our foreign guests exhibit as they set foot on our soil. An Australian or American bum for example does not expose only an overdose of arrogance they are also reeking with obnoxious odor.

I encountered one of these characters in a telecom office downtown. The unwashed bastard sent a fax message. Unfortunately for him, the receiving line was noisy so it took some time to transmit his messages. His bill naturally exceeded his estimate although less than P500. He claims he is no stranger to communications but technically he is a moron. To avoid paying he raised his voice and made a scene and uttered invectives on the clerks. It turned out he has less than P300 in his tattered wallet. And he brags about his being an Australian who can afford or so it seems.

Koreans? No. If they ran out of money, they go home. They are a lot civilized than the Ausies we are getting as our share of tourists from down under. But Koreans can be really men when it comes to disciplining or tutoring their children. Either in academics or in sports, some of them from the old school especially really manhandle their kids.

But the Koreans enjoy life and they are very demonstrative about their feelings. Once in my younger days, I joined a work camp in Namhae gun, south of S.K. as part of the student seminar on Nationalism and International Understanding. (I learned later my publisher was on the same confab a few years after ours.) There were 37 nationalities in our group and an equal number of Koreans who were our hosts. I found out that Koreans are more engaging and open about their emotions and attitudes.

Not a few years ago, I met a Korean businessman who just retired from his work. He decided to come to Davao to do business. He wants to buy cavendish bananas, which according to him, his compatriots like a lot. Unfortunately for him he met some unscrupulous and shady characters who made a fast buck on him. What he got were unmarketable rejects. It was too late for him to realize that buying export-grade bananas was quite difficult in those times when every finger is contracted for and committed in the export market. I helped him touch base with some legitimate growers who gave him a lesson on how to do business with banana growers. At that time, he was almost hopeless as he had ran out of his hard-earned retirement money. He went home to SK fearing the fury of his wife. Later he sent me a Christmas card thanking me for the introducing him to my Ninong RDC Chairman Chito V. Ayala. He vowed that as soon as he will be able to recoup his losses, and probably the confidence of his wife, he will come back to Davao City and try his luck again.

I think that the highest number of tourists that come to Davao are Korean nationals. They love it here. I talked to a group of about 15 of them sometime ago. I chanced on them swimming in the pool at Eden Nature Park. They love the cool water of the Olympic-size pool that looks like gingerly hanging in the slope where it is situated. The pool gives them a fantastic view of Davao Gulf and the entire city. "Why do you like it here?," I asked. The leader of the group who are mostly young professionals managed to explain in workable English: "We love it here. This mountain resort is only 30 minutes from the beach," he said pointing at Samal Island. The Koreans also love the green vegetation around them.

Sometimes it takes an outsider to tell us how lucky we are staying in a beautiful city like Davao and its environs. In the Rotary Club of Davao, we used to have a Korean member who is extremely friendly. He intimated to me that some of his compatriots were amazed to find out that we have waterfalls, rivers, caves that are inhabited by thousands of bats and caves that wind deep into the mountain along with an underground river. He said that they do not see these wonders of mother nature in Korea and elsewhere.

Koreans do not worry about distances. Our Rotarian friend explained that it is faster to reach Davao from Korea all the way to Marco Polo than from Korea to a hotel in Makati. In metro Manila, he said, you travel great distances to go to a beach or to a golf course. He said that Metro Manila do not have mountain resorts. Then his eyes twinkle, "In Davao we get a bonus of magnificent diving sites and excellent food which is cheap." Why not Cebu? "It's very much like Manila," he said.

Once Mayor Rodrigo Duterte chastised a Korean national who whipped his son with a gold putter. Now if you think the Koreans resented that, then you are downright wrong. It turned out they actually admire a leader with a strong character, gutsy and down-to-earth. They admire him for being able to keep peace and order in the city. They smoke a lot, but they follow the no smoking ban because "the Mayor says so." Today being Araw ng Dabaw, don't be surprised to see those chink-eyed guests. They are here to celebrate with us. They are very much at home here with the kind of discipline that Mayor Duterte imposes.

Traipsing thru the past

IT'S Araw ng Dabaw once again and as we go out and celebrate, it's also the best time to peek into the pages of books that has chronicled Davao as it was before, for the new generation Dabawenyos to get a grasp of how this city was and how it has grown to be what it is today.

It's a past that's as colorful as its present. Realities that continue to prevail, glimpses of resilience and a history distinct from all.

Davao, as the Jesuit priests of the late Spanish colonial period were aware of, was rich in natural resources. It was just seems not to appeal to those who hate to whack it out.

Thus, Davao did not appeal to the Spaniards, Datu Bago awardee and award-winning writer Dr. Macario D. Tiu wrote in his book, "Davao 1890-1910: Conquest and Resistance in the Garden of the Gods."

Lifting an excerpt from the letter of Fr. Urios in 1894, Dr. Tiu wrote: "(N)o one has come to settle in this extreme corner of the Philippines despite the fertility of its soil, the health enjoyed by one living here, and the variety of resources on land and sea open to anyone to earn a living..."

But the same was not lost on the Americans who came after the Spaniards. They saw huge potentials, a vast, rich, arable land.

"By 1904, Davao had quite a reputation as the place to go for ambition Americans who wanted to own plantations," Dr. Tiu wrote.

The Americans were not as good as the Japanese, however, in knowing not just the terrain of the land, but the terrain of politics. Thus, less than 30 years later, it was the Japanese who have reaped the benefits of this vast, rich, arable lands that the Americans saw.

In his book "Making Mindanao: Cotabato and Davao in the formatin of the Philippine Nation-State", Professor Patricio N. Abinales, a Mindanaoan albeit from the northwestern region gives us a glimpse of how Davao leaped out booming and posing a threat to an otherwise indifferent government.

"Populated mainly by small and diverse 'Bagobo' tribes, Davao under the Moro Province did not warrant the same attention the US Army gave to the 'unstable' districts of Sulu, Cotabato, and Lanao. The province encouraged American settlement, but its failure to prosper underscored the peripheral nature of the district," Abinales wrote about Davao pre-1930s.

It has already become a regular province and had a provincial and municipal government structure that was dominated by the Nacionalistas, Abinales write, "Yet the province's distance meant that Filipino leaders gave little attention to the province."

It was only in the 1930s when the extent of Japanese control of Davao was reported by Manila-based journalists that "Manila politicians" took heed. But not for long, because having seen Davao's boom under the Japanese' hands, they wanted a share of it and thus played with the money source. In those days and age, corruption wasn't a foreign word.

While how the Japanese took control of Davao's economy is a study in how pre-World War II corruption does not pale in comparison to today's standards is a worthy read, it's not something to celebrate about and is better skimmed over as we mark Davao's 70th year.

Just a hint to tickle your curiosity, and hopefully encourage you to read about Davao history (and not just those in your textbooks), the people after which our major roads have been named are as questionable of virtue as the controversial Datu Bago.

Suffice it to say that Davao did boom in those years.

"By the Commonwealth period, Japanese control of abaca lands had achieved the American ambition of making Davao a thriving economic zone and abaca a major Philippine commodity," Abinales wrote.

Ironically, this high-value fiber was exported as Manila hemp.

By 1932, Davao had fas exceeded the tax payments of Zamboanga, which for a long time was the top tax contributor in Mindanao.

But at that time too, Davao's land were mostly planted to abaca. It was importing foodstuff for its people.

"According to Hayase (1984, 276), 'from its inception Davao was importing only 1,200 piculs of rice a month. But by 1929, over 12 million kilos of rice were imported. The people of Davao have become totally dependent on a cash crop economy developed around abaca cultivation'," Abinales quoted from Shinzo Hayase in his 1984 doctorate thesis. One picul is approximately 60 kilograms and thus Davao before was regularly importing less than a million kilograms of rice before its abaca boom.

In the 1930s, Abinales wrote, cost of living in Davao was more expensive than in Lingayen, Manila, and Zamboanga, the premier port cities of the Philippines in that era.

To this day, however, while the city enjoys a most affordable cost of living standard, nuances of the past remains: central government's indifference, unwanted by those who want the utmost urban trappings of concrete jungles but loved by the adventurous and entrepreneurial, and yes, the quiet growth that never fails to surprise those who take the time to take a deeper look.

The centuries have apparently failed to change the very spirit that shrouds the region, the same spirit that has embraced the people who saw the "fertility of its soil, the health enjoyed by one living here, and the variety of resources on land and sea open to anyone to earn a living..." (SAE)

I would just like to share my view on the above article regarding americans, aussies and koreans although a bit OT already.

I think the author, with all due respect to Sir Jun Ledesma, overly generalized that all americans especially aussies are such. Americans? hmmm, maybe some or close to majority of them are indeed arrogant since I used to work as a customer service representative for an american credit card company before, so I basically have somewhat a general idea on how and what their characters are through my dealings with them over the phone. Some would ask so many questions and stick to what they thought is right for them but to us reps is logically and technically impossible. And if they knew that they are speaking to a non-american rep, they would hang-up or yet bluntly ask to be transferred to an american rep. But aussies on being arrogant? well i beg to disagree... they are somewhat different.

Some might have shown such kind of attitude but basing on my experience with them as a customer service rep through their call center here in Manila, (coz I haven't been to Australia yet) where I get to interact with "real aussies" through our customers, our counterpart company representatives in our Australia office and our big bosses in Manila which there are actually four of them. IMO, aussies are more subtle compared to americans.

Let me just cite some example... most of the concerns that we get from our aussie customers are billing inquiries and complaints. What I noticed is they usually don't ask too many questions as long as they understood by explaining to them properly and completely how their charges on the bill came to such. Then if they request for something that is not technically possible and you turned them down respectfully, they'd accept it fair and square with no further questions asked. A NO is a NO to them. Never have I experienced being ridiculed by an aussie over the phone. And never have I encountered an aussie requesting to speak exclusively to an aussie rep.

And boy, my aussie bosses are one of the best! Looking at them, there's almost no aura of superiority position-wise and "race-wise". And oftentimes they would treat us for a party. They would personally attend to each and everyone to make sure that everybody is having fun and enjoying, and almost doesn't sit and relax even for just a short while just to attend to everybody. That is not an exaggeration mate! That's how hospitable they are. Its like our very own much bragged-about "filipino hospitality" is nothing compared to theirs. I guess they know and are always reminded of their heritage and ancestry. Their proud country being once the largest penal colony in the world.

But man, ruin their account and unfulfill the task that you have promised to them for their account, then all hell is unleashed! So I guess the dude whom the author encountered with just didn't get the kind of customer service he deserved and expected. That's how it goes with everybody, be it americans, aussies, japanese and us filipinos. Every person has its own unique trait and character regardless of race. I for one might have felt the same way if i were in his shoes, imagine just to send a fax message and would cost almost P500? A call per minute to Australia is only around AUS$1.00 or roughly P38!

About koreans? I was once a bedspacer for a couple of years in a house where most of the renters are seaman. And majority of them said that one of the most-hated and barbaric ship officers are koreans. Hmmm kinda resembled the korean father ei? And some allegedly wouldn't even bother to take some sprinkling over the head for a few weeks! Wow talking about proper hygiene. And oh, my brother is currently working for a korean firm also in Manila, teaching english lessons to koreans. His comment on his korean colleagues and bosses? Its like their mouth haven't tasted toothpaste for weeks.

Happy Araw ng Dabaw to all!!!

Tour operators in Beijing may include Davao in their package
by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (16 March) -- The 2008 Olympics in Beijing is one event that excites Davao tour operators because of the benefit they expect from the event, this after talks are firmed up.

Department of Tourism (DOT XI) Sonia Garcia said tours operators in Beijing are completing tour packages that they offer to tourists plus destinations.

She said this is an opportunity for Davao to get a slice of the market and bring tourists here.

There are ongoing talks linking Beijing tour operators to the Davao tour operators, Garcia said.

“Beijing has only so much to offer in terms of destinations and the sites are here with us,” she said.

Talking of adventure, she said tourists could experience only the best like backpackers across the islands and highlands of Davao.

Garcia said one can go trekking, river tubing, diving, mountain climbing and island hopping which is an ultimate eco-tourism expedition in one fun-filled package.

She said this is possible with the connections Davao has to other international destinations.

With international flights that can be accessed at the Davao International Airport (DIA) she said there is now an assurance of connections from their place of origin.

“There’s a lot of groups wanting to come and places like Clark where most international budget flights are served is looking at connections because many tourists are also looking at other options like Davao,” she said.

She said the possibility of having chartered flights is now happening here like the “I Golf Club” that offers three-package to Davao from Ichon, Korea via Clark.

The charter flights took off first week of March and will run until April 14 then afterwards will fly straight to Davao and will no longer pass by Clark.

Tourists among others come to play golf and drop by the casino at the Apo View Hotel while here in Davao. (PIA XI) [top]

Duty Free Shop coming back to Davao
by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (16 March) -- Davao will soon have a Duty Free shop right at the Davao International Airport (DIA).

This was announced by Sonia Garcia, regional director of the Department of Tourism (DOT) in a press briefing with Davao business reporters at SM City.

Garcia said the coming back of the Duty Free shop is an indication that there will be more arrivals.

She said these are new concessionaires that will be housed at the arrival area.

“In fact a Korean shop has already signified putting up a booth at the DIA,” she said.
Garcia meanwhile reported that tourists from East Asia still dominate the visitor coming to Davao based on the hotel occupancy report.

She said about 20,471 of them visited Davao last year composed of nationals coming from Japan, 12,997, Korea, 2,647, China, 1,924, Hong Kong, 1,773, and Taiwan, 1,080.

Those from North America accounted for 10,401 with USA contributing 9,139 and Canada, 1,262.

Visitors from the ASEAN countries numbered 3,731 consisting of Singapore, 1,143, Indonesia, 916, Malaysia, 876, Thailang, 642, Brunei, 126 and Vietnam, 28. Those from South Asia, India in particular had only about 329 visitors.

Ocenia had 1,966 with Australia numbering 1,968 and New Zealand, 222. Visitors from Europe totaled 3,602 while the Middle East from Saudi Arabia, 225. Others with unspecified residences numbered about 5,81.

“The 46,728 total foreign visitors last year is still low although our anchor still is the domestic travelers and overseas Filipino workers and balikbayans which totaled to about 519,350,” she said.

But she said that after the market is opened up to other international destinations, the possibility of increasing arrivals will be met.

She said given the demand, other airlines might consider opening up new routes where they already were given landing rights at the DIA.

“About 40 airlines had approved landing rights at DIA and this also is a must do thing for us to convince them to fly provided that we create the demand,” she added. (PIA XI) [top]

Lets all sing our city hymn...

Tayo'y Dabawenyo

Sa dakong timog ng Mindanaw
May isang lungsod na hinirang
Ang likas nyang kayamanan
Ay walang kapantay

Mga bundok dagat lupain
Laging sagana sa pagkain
At magagandang tanawin
Kadlungan ng aliw

Mutya Lungsod ng Dabaw
Sa iyong paglalakbay
Sa mithing kaunlaran
Ikaw ay paglilingkuran

Tayo'y Dabawenyo
Na tapat at totoo
Pangarap ay matamo
Kaluwalhatian mo...
Lungsod ng Paraiso

Davao cuisine

* Blogie
* 16 March 2007

Happy 70th Araw ng Dabaw!!!

In Davao there are quite a number of various cuisines to get excited about. There are several European restaurants: Claude’s le Café de Ville (French); De Bonte Koe (the name’s Dutch, but what’s on the menu’s Euro fusion); Picobello (Italian); and a few more. There’s American… hmm… McDonald’s? Asian, of course: Tsuru, Mabo, Zakoya, etc. (Japanese); Twosome Palace, Korea Town, etc. (Korean); Hanoi (Vietnamese); Marco Polo’s Lotus Garden (Cantonese); etc.

But I’ve been asked: What really is Davao cuisine?

Well, barbecue maybe? Davaoeños are so fond of grilled tuna and squid and other seafoods. Or maybe kinilaw? One of Davao’s best offerings: kinilaw na malasugui (raw marlin prepared in a vinegar sauce). But then again, neither barbecue nor kinilaw is exclusively Davaoeño.

I guess there’s no special cuisine that’s indigenous to Davao. When you say “spicy Filipino dishes,” people automatically think of Bicol Express. When you mention papaitan, Ilocos comes to mind easily. But if you say kinilaw, do people think of Davao right away? I wonder…

Well, we may not be able to lay claim on a native dish, but Davaoeños are nonetheless mighty proud of their food. Eating out is possibly the #1 pastime here. That’s probably because food’s fresh here — meats, poultry, fish, vegetables. And cheap.

On non-dates, just your ordinary eating-out occasion, Davaoeños spend around P250 on a meal, including drinks. More than that and your average Davaoeño would think of it as a special occasion. No kidding. That’s why Manileños and other visitors find it so pleasant and relaxing to be in Davao.

Nice article! I'd like to add that my grandfathers family were one of the 1st families to have lived in Davao City. They had the 1st and only house before in Ponciano St. (pre-war) because my great grandfather worked and knew the Villabrilles. The current site of the place is now ocupied by PAL agency. We had a talk session about the War and how Davao before was nice and filled with coconut trees in areas now heavely populated. He said many great things could have happen if the city was properly funded and planned after Liberation.

Madayaw Dabaw! 70th Adlaw sa Dabaw!

This one is a bit tricky for the first time visitors and travelers in Davao City.

They are not written on the store or business signages, but people refer to the old street names in downtown Davao as they would an old familiar friend.

You are waiting for a jeepney and you have the most fancy map of Davao. The jeepney hangs “Claveria” on its signboard, but there is no Claveria on your map.

“Am I already standing right along the Claveria Street?”, you ask yourself in silence. If you are a total stranger, it’s hard to tell whether you are right or wrong. And this can feel a bit annoying.

With the Davao Traveler website, you have handy guide to the Old versus the New Street names of Davao City.

Familiarize yourself with these names and don’t ever attempt to go downtown if you can’t memorize these names. These are Davao’s busiest streets and highly trafficked roads.

Old Name : Magallanes Street
New Name : A. Pichon Street

This is a one-way street that starts with the Metro Bank and ends with the Colassa’s Barbeque. Some well-knowned establishments along the Magallanes Street include the Grand Men Seng Hotel and the Davao City Library (which is actually housed within the City Council Building.)

Old Name : Claveria Street
New Name : Claro M. Recto Avenue

It stretches from the San Pedro Cathedral on one end to the Aldevinco Shopping Center and Marco Polo Hotel on the other end. (Actually, it goes all the way up to the J.P. Laurel Ave. and the Uyanguren, but most travellers are already familiar with the Marco Polo Hotel.)

Follow this link to view a photo showing the Claveria Street.

Old Name : Uyanguren Street
New Name : Ramon Magsaysay Avenue

Sometimes refered to as the China Town of Davao, the place is home to many Chinese businessmen. It intersects the C.M. Recto Avenue (or Claveria) and J.P. Laurel on one end and connects all the way to the Magsasay Park on the other end.

Old Name : Ponciano Reyes Street
New Name : C. Pichon Street

This is the long road opposite the C. M. Recto Avenue. Among other things, here you will find the headquater of the Davao 911, office of the Davao Light and Power Company, the PLDT and Smart Communications Building, and the famous Tesoros Printing Press.

miss you goys. sorry for the bye in a haste. just felt those translations are to a point ridiculous. do they do that in the china thread? i just hope that they check out with the forum members before all these changes. so this made me ask, to what extent are the responsibilities of the mods? just moderating? or tinkering with the whole architecture?

anyway, thanks to animo for the old street names. go out of the downtown core and you will end up lost mostly. where's crossing bayabas, balusong or crossing juna? even if we change our street names over and over again, we're still stuck with the old names, fondly.

Davao City, Koror forge peace, development ties
By Grace L. Plata

THE sisterhood agreement between Davao City and the State of Koror, Palau, was signed in a formal ceremony Friday at the Grand Men Seng Hotel with the top Davao City officials and Koror's contingent in attendance.

The 30-man contingent from Koror headed by State Governor Yositaka Adachi arrived Wednesday night in the city for the signing, which was purposely set in time for the Davao's 70th founding anniversary Friday.

"This signing is even made more significant by the fact that the city is extending its family and accepting the people of Koror as partners and sisters in peace, goodwill, progress, and development during the city's 7Oth birthday," said Duterte in his speech after the ceremonial signing.

Duterte added that the sisterhood agreement will pave the way for positive cross-culture activities where "everyone is a winner."

The mayor asked that he be allowed and helped with to implement and fulfill the agreement to the last letter.

Adachi, for his part, said it is an utmost privilege and great honor for the people of Koror to be linked with Davao City in sisterhood cooperation.

"This is only the beginning of more to come -- prosperity, good health and friendship," Adachi said.

Adachi said that as of this month, Koror has started to fulfill its end of the bargain in fostering economic ties by importing fruits and fruit products -- pineapple, banana, papaya and mango -- from Davao City.

In an earlier interview, lawyer Mark Doran, legal counsel for the state of Koror, said a ship carrying those products will leave each month from Davao to Koror.

Aside from import-export ventures, the sisterhood agreement states that both parties shall promote and expand an effective and mutually beneficial cooperation in fields of Trade and Investment Promotion and Economic Development; Tourism Development; Education, Culture and Sports; and Agriculture (Agro-Industrial Programs).

Microwavable frozen banana products accepted in Saudi

FOUR companies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have accepted the introduction of microwavable frozen whole ripe saba banana, saba banana fries and banana turon of the Sagrex Food Inc. of the Philippines.

In fact, Sagrex Food Inc. owner Ferdinand Marañon said that the four companies, namely, M. al Hokair & Sons, the Sahad Trading, Al Bahar Restaurant, and the Sulafa Ahmed Youssof have ordered the supply of the products.

The supply arrangements, on the other hand, are now under negotiation. Each company signified with orders amounted to $20,000.

New packaging designs with Arabic translation will also be prepared and product samples will be sent for approval.

"Businessmen are very interested to have a supply of the microwavable banana. It is very easy to prepare, saba banana fries is an alternative to French Fries," Marañon said.

Marañon added that the traders as well as the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) already wanted the products to be made available in the market.

Major malls in Saudi Arabia also showed interested in having the products sold in their firms. Also, fastfood chains and restaurants that were matched with Sagrex Corp. expressed their interest to test-market the product.

Marañon, who was among the delegates who participated in the trade and investment mission to Saudi Arabia, made a cooking/techno demo on his products making Saudi Arabian businessmen to settle with possible supply arrangements. (JGRS)

Come and live here, see for yourself. Am currently working in a white dominated country [Englvnd]. As sure as hell, I know what they're like. They behave well when they are in the minority - say one white i.e. english worker vis-a-vis 7 coloured workers, they plod along peacefully to keep a low profile.

However, when the tides turn, then you shall see what they're like. You have stabbed yourself in the face if you trust them 100%. It's a norm for them to be nice in front of you, even if the very sight of you makes them trumpet, it's called being 'civilised' and 'diplomatic'. They're good at 'copying' [filipino/indian] accent behind our backs, and they make a laugh out of it like 'wo was she on about aye?'.

They think all coloured people are ignorant. 'That filopino girl knows nothing, she's just bl**dy ignorant, in't she? wo' is she like?' They are no better than our ghastly hot tempered asian bosses, these europeans dislike coloured people, wether they admit it or naught.

It's a shame how we put up with it. Revolting indeed, but we Filipinos look up to them as gods. :ohno: :ohno: Sad plight inni? Just look at the No Smoking, or some'ink like tha Billboard posted in the last Davao thread. For crying out loud, those kids are all white! We Davaoenos are naught white, are we? Coloured means: Neither of the Anglo-Saxon/Slavic/Germanic/North-Western European tribes.

agree with you on the above. but us filipinos are also discriminatory. it could have been institutionalized by the spaniards or even americans. we look at the itas, bagobos or any lumads as lowly and ignorant. while we can complain of how we are treated in any foreign land, can we start on treating sensibly our dark skinned or lumad fellowmen first?

Good one Paul!

Anyways, found this out in englvnd, even among africans there is some sort of heirarchy, if you like, where light skinned africans known as mulatoes [spellcheck] e.g. M Carey, Beyonce, and Craig David are considered superior compared to full blooded africans. Many of them pure blacks bleach their skin with dangerous toxic chemicals to make themselves lighter. Very similar to us filipinos, where skin bleaching agents are very popular amongst women, and now even men i.e. papaya soap. You know what I mean? This fact has given me an insight into this so called colonial or what i'd like to term as indiotic mentality.

I recon that this could be because africans have been enslaved by europeans/whites for hundreds of years, very similar to our history.

As for filipinos treating our dark skinned brothers fairly? Hah, tough! You wish!

Not until a Filipino version of Malaysia's Mahathir Mohammad shows up, that is. Fat chance! He's the one responsible for abolishing the marginalisation of Malays in his country by the Chinese. Thanks to him, to this day, brown skinned malaysians have better job prospects, better housing, etc.. than light skinned chinese in Malaysia.

HAPPY B-DAY DAVAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

agree. even among the blacks, western blacks feel superior than the africans. aha nako nasa to, you would know an african black to western one. hay nalang, what's got to do with the colour of the skin? pati ako ani guilty pud. here in toronto, people are wary of jamaican blacks because of their rough attitude (pati ang gang violence are always atributed to them).

about mahathir. i like the determination of this guy. in a sense he is a visionary, brought to what malaysia is now. problem is, kung naay ing-ani sa atoa, diktador dayon ang singit sa oposisyon.

agree with you on the above. but us filipinos are also discriminatory. it could have been institutionalized by the spaniards or even americans. we look at the itas, bagobos or any lumads as lowly and ignorant. while we can complain of how we are treated in any foreign land, can we start on treating sensibly our dark skinned or lumad fellowmen first?

Hi Paul :hi: we missed you btw did you read my pm ?

Nice article! I'd like to add that my grandfathers family were one of the 1st families to have lived in Davao City. They had the 1st and only house before in Ponciano St. (pre-war) because my great grandfather worked and knew the Villabrilles. The current site of the place is now ocupied by PAL agency. We had a talk session about the War and how Davao before was nice and filled with coconut trees in areas now heavely populated. He said many great things could have happen if the city was properly funded and planned after Liberation.

Madayaw Dabaw! 70th Adlaw sa Dabaw!

Malapit sa Madrazo bahay ng lolo mo ?

trivia: did you know the Davao River flows in Bucana before, not in Agro area.

what's the real street name of crooked road ? i know it's not Ponciano ...btw yung Ponciano dapat tawag natin Reyes st .diba :D
any trivia sir Paul?

Kuya Dagoth high ako ngayon, katatapos lang namin mag-S.C. hehehe! (you know what I mean). meron pa bukas kasi straight duty ko, at baka si big boss daw sa 6:00a.m!

Thanks for the insights btw, same goes to sir paul. It's a helpful reminder for those who are planning to go to any western country, especially coming from you guys who have seen it all and heard it all. :)

But I have a feeling and IMO, that aussies are "somewhat" different, to say the least. They are slightly different in a way that as I have stated in my previous post, they are not discriminatory to filipino call center agents. Unlike some westerners, and that includes the brits (because we also have british telecom account on the same floor with our account) basing on my experience with the americans and from what we heard from T.M. agents as well (the u.k. account) they will bluntly say it straight into your face discriminatory and unsavory remarks if they knew they are calling and speaking to someone who is overseas :bash:. But with aussies? Nada, zero! Yun lang. :)

Anyway, para hindi na masyadong O.T. Ano kaya kung our very own mayor RRD magpatakbo ng ating bansa? You think he's capable of doing a mahathir as well?

@dinabaw asan na mga pix excited na kami!!!

Meron ba tayong mas close-up na pic ng ating mga 2007 Mutya? IMO, this year's winner (escala) is one of the most beautiful and prettiest I have ever seen. ^^

Sana for the upcoming Kadayawan pure lumad (from the bagobo, manobo tribes etc.) naman ang i-accept as candidates para may originality. :)

Davao Offers Cheapest Kidney Transplant
Posted on Mar. 14, 2007

DAVAO CITY — Kidney specialists in the city have bared that Davao offers the cheapest kidney transplant in the country today.

Dr. Franklin Guillano, a nephrologist, revealed that the city has hospitals that offer kidney transplantations for about 500,000 pesos compared to Manila’s price range from 800,000 pesos up to one million pesos.

“And it’s only Davao City in the whole of Mindanao that offers such service,” he said.

Since 1997, the number of kidney transplants grew to more than 100 transplantation. This was brought about by the various programs, often foreign-assisted, that provided free transplant operations to those deserving and qualified kidney patients.

Guillano and the other leaders of the Philippine Society of Nephrology - Mindanao Chapter are intensifying their advocacy of raising awareness about the importance of kidneys as an amazing organ that plays a crucial role.

“We are bringing forth the message that kidney disease is common, harmful, and treatable,” said Philippine Society of Nephrology Mindanao chapter president Dr. Josefino Ramos.

The specialists stressed that kidney problems are not just End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) which is often treated through dialysis or transplant. There is also what the specialists call Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) that is present in more than 500 million individuals or about one in 10 adults in the general population.

Studies showed that majority of individuals with early stages of CKD go undiagnosed, particularly in the developing world.

Dr. Noel Villanueva suggested that people must undergo urinalysis test to determine if they have kidney problems.

“If you feel body pain or difficulty in urinating, have a urinalysis immediately. As much as possible do not take pain relievers, trust doctor’s prescriptions to avoid infections or complications,” Villanueva said.

However, the most likely to get CKD or at high risk of the disease are patients with diabetes mellitus and hypertensive, those who are obese, over 50 years old, and those who smoke.

If not treated, the kidney problem could worsen and become an End-Stage Renal Disease which is now infecting over 1.5 million people worldwide, either undergoing hemo or peritoneal dialysis or transplantation.

The kidney specialists claimed that the success rate of kidney transplant in Davao city is 92%, which they believe is a good option for those who want to rid themselves from the weekly dialysis routine.

Despite the presence of competitive, modern kidney facilities in the city, the specialists still urge the public to be aware of the preventive measures to avoid the disease. It includes reduction of high blood pressure, control of glucose, smoking cessation, increase physical activities, and controlled body weight.

The kidney society worldwide celebrates World Kidney Day every eighth day of March. (Mai Gevera/PIA XI)

Happy Araw ng Dabaw to all!!!
apologies to his reader fans mate. hes so insensitive to sensitivities of people. hes underminig the efforts of the city to attract more visitors to come to davao with his prejudices. choosing between you and him, i chose and thank yous for: 1. objective in your views 2. you are more mature than him intellectually 3. you think more like a professional journalist than those cheeky bunch who could not deal fairly with their psyche
