Contest? I don't think so. Davao is of a different league. Just read their posts if u dont mind. In my entire stay here in SSC - since 2005, Davao did not try to devaluate a city. But of course, when someone tries to twist the truth, that's when Davao based forumers react.

In fact, some of the forumers from SSC Davao made threads for other cities in Mindanao for these cities to be promoted in this online community. And in reality, thats the role of Davao City too. We have been representing cities internationally and Mindanao as a whole for these small and midsized cities to be exposed and developed.

I agree. It is alright, encourageable even, for forumers to brag about their cities, and to lay the accomplishments of their respective cities as a way of promoting their own turfs, but it becomes completely deplorable if they start pulling other cities down.

It actually all started when one of the forumer from the other minda city thread is already "claiming" that theirs is now the economic center of mindanao. Ni hindi pa nga yata sya nakakapunta ng Davao eh heheheh...

Their region might be slightly ahead in terms of industrial growth and development. But city for city? Nah, i dont think so! Basing alone on tax collected for 2006, theirs (city) is just about on the 2B mark, a far cry from d.c's 4B collection!

Siguro kung walang big-time projects and developments na mangyayari sa d.c. say, in 5-10 years then baka finally masasabi ng naungusan na talaga nila. But sad to say (for him) a lot of "big-time" projects are in the works and are even in the line-up for Davao (city). (With special mention to our kabarka-goys for keeping us updated :salute: )

Yan, i've finally said my piece regarding this ish. Its just for the sake of keeping the records straight. :)

The Other Cayetano

At Davao City’s Sasa village, the neighbors and coworkers of Joselito Cayetano are stumped by his decision to run for the Senate. They were stunned when he added the second name “Peter” to his certificate of candidacy. Alan Peter Cayetano, the opposition congressman who is running for senator, is not amused.

Joselito Cayetano, a truck driver at Sasa Wharf, runs for the Senate. He will likely spoil the chances of senatorial candidate Alan Peter Cayetano-> Better a Truck Driver than a Trapo in the Senate

By Grace S. Uddin
davaotoday.com

DAVAO CITY— What’s in a name? A lot. Especially when it’s election season and rival political groups, as shown in past elections, may use namesakes as a ploy to confuse voters and supporters to reduce their rivals candidate’s chances of winning.

Take for instance the case of Joselito “Peter” Cayetano, the supposed namesake of Taguig-Pateros Representative Alan Peter Cayetano, who is a vocal critic of the Arroyo administration, particular First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo.

Neighbors and relatives in an urban poor village in the Sasa Wharf complex here were stunned when they learned early this year that Joselito, 41, is running for senator in the May 14 elections.

“He only goes out of their house when he had to buy something,” said one neighbor. The neighbor said Joselito was never involved in politics before, not even in the barangay (village) or purok (neighborhood) level.

To hear Joselito run announce his intention to become senator was quite a shock because, according to the neighbor, Joselito’s only involvement in their village is in playing street basketball.

But what stunned neighbors was when Joselito, whom most knew as “Jojo,” added the name “Peter” in the certificate of candidacy he filed with the Commission on Elections.

“This man has no idea about politics,” said Florenda Saluta, 37, Joselito’s friend and kumare, who have always known him as Jojo.

These statements by his friends and neighbors tend to bolster the allegation by Alan Peter Cayetano that Joselito “Peter” Cayetano is not just a nuisance candidate – Joselito, according to him, is being used to undermine the congressman’s senatorial candidacy.

Metaphil builds wharf extension in Davao
January 22, 2007

Metaphil, a division of the Aboitiz Construction Group, has been awarded a P231-million wharf extension project from Terminal Facilities and Services Corporation (TEFASCO) based in Davao City.

The project is a 17-meter by 147-meter extension of the existing wharf. Scope of work includes the wharf structure, site development and reclamation.

The wharf extension will augment the berthing facilities that will benefit TEFASCO and in general, Davao in terms of an increase in ship and cargo traffic, both domestic and international.

The project will start in February and will be completed in January 2008. Metaphil's Leo Tampos will manage the project.

TEFASCO president and general manager Vicente Gotianse says, "We are counting on Metaphil's experience to successfully build our wharf extension."

"We are reliable and easy to deal with," assures Metaphil chair and CEO Roberto Aboitiz.

Metaphil, an ISO 9001:2000 company, also built the AJMR wharf located in Davao City, in 2005-2006. AJMR operates a fruit wharf for Davao Fruits Corporation.

TEFASCO, a privately-owned wharf, is a common-user port open to the general public for berthing of vessels and cargo stacking or storage. Presently, it has 400 meters berthing capacity for domestic and foreign vessels. The wharf is equipped with a ramp for barge landing to facilitate loading and unloading of heavy rolling cargoes or handling of bulk cargoes with the aid of payloaders and dump trucks.

Some "nice-to-knows" about ADDU

History of AdDU

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY

The Ateneo de Davao University is one of nine schools in the Philippines owned and operated by the Society of Jesus. The school tradition at Ateneo de Davao University is the product of over four centuries of educational experience of the Society. This tradition started with the establishment of a College at Messina in 1547 by St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, and which is now found in very many educational institutions throughout the world managed by the Society of Jesus.

At the request of the Most Reverend Luis del Rosario S.J., Bishop of Zamboanga, which then included Davao, the Jesuit Fathers took over St. Peter’s Parochial School and founded the Ateneo de Davao in 1948. The founding Fathers were led by Fr. Theodore E. Daigler S.J., who became the first Rector of the school. The other founding Fathers were Frs. Alfredo Paguia S.J. and Grant Quinn S.J. and Scholastics James Donelan S.J. and Rodolfo Malasmas S.J.

When the Ateneo de Davao opened in June 1948, it offered Grades V and VI and 1st to 3rd year high school. There were 71 elementary students and 131 high school students who started in a wooden building on a six-hectare lot in Matina.

The Jacinto campus was obtained in 1951 with the generous support of the Most Rev. Clovis Thibault, P.M.E., Bishop-Prelate of Davao. The campus provided classrooms for high school students in the daytime and college courses in the evenings. College course offerings then were liberal arts, commerce, education, associate in arts, pre-law, secretarial and an elementary teacher’s certificate program. There were 130 male college students at the July 1951 start of the College Department, and they were housed in the wooden Bellarmine Hall. In 1953, the Ateneo de Davao College became co-educational. By then, there were 9 collegiate course programs offered.

A credit union for Ateneo de Davao students was organized by one of its faculty members, Ms. Elsa Escaño in 1956.

By 1960, the population of the College Department had greatly increased, requiring the construction of a five-story building, Canisius Hall. The next year, the College of Law was started, to respond to the demand of pre-law students who wanted to have a quality Catholic legal education at the Ateneo de Davao.

A two-wing, two-storey high school building complex was constructed at the Matina campus in 1967: the High School was transferred to the Matina campus to provide more rooms for the College at the Jacinto Campus. During that same year, the Ateneo also accepted female students in the Grade School, also in Matina. By 1968, the Ateneo de Davao was ready to offer graduate courses.

In 1969, the Ateneo de Davao College received its first accreditation with the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU). Ateneo de Davao together with Xavier University and the Ateneo de Zamboanga formed the Mindanao Consortium of Ateneo Schools with the approval of the Department of Education.

In 1973, the Grade School became the first PAASCU-accredited elementary school in the Visayas and Mindanao. The Graduate School entered into a consortium with St. Francis Xavier Regional Seminary for master’s degrees in Theology and in Theology Education.

DOT developing cultural villages

IN RESPONSE to the reqest of European and domestic tourists, the Department of Tourism (DOT) is developing cultural tourism in villages and key areas in the region.

DOT-Southern Mindanao Regional Director Sonia Garcia said cultural tourism is really a niche market but it has to be pushed through strongly. The government is marketing through Singapore with an eye of luring the European market.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage

"What we need to do is set up cultural villages in areas accessible to the tourists. We need not go to remote villages where our tribes settle because tourists don't go for long travels," she said.

She said a showcase can be established in certain sites to give tourists an idea of the Filipino cultural heritage.

Garcia mentioned the existing cultural villages in Mindanao like those in lake Sebu in South Cotabato, the Tudaya village in Digos City, and the B'laan village in Malita, Davao del Sur.

"We want to show our tourists that the Mindanao islands are connected by land travel," she said.

With the highway tourism program, travelers can be provided with clean facilities like restrooms and cafeterias and at the same time increase their knowledge of unique and distinct cultures in the islands.

The program is being coordinated with the local government units for infrastructure facilities.

This will also provide LGUs venues by which they can promote their respective tourist destinations and affordable eco-tourism packages, she said. (PIA)

I hope Sonia Garcia will deliver this time!

In 1990, during the administration of President Corazon C. Aquino, the regional center of Region IX was proposed for transfer ot Pagadian, yet this proposal cannot be pushed through. However, in 2004, President Gloria Arroyo ordered all offices to be transferred to Pagadian with the exception of regional branches of Department of Tourism, Department of Labor and Employment and Department of Trade and Industry, which will be retained in Zamboanga.

Pagadian city may be aimed to become one of the most important hubs in the south following the controversial regional transfer from Zamboanga City. Many people in Zamboanga City felt that the timing of the move was an attempt to punish Zamboanga City for not supporting the presidential campaign of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Others questioned the move because Zamboanga City has a much larger population and has direct air links with Davao, Cebu, Manila, and Malaysia. Zamboanga City is the commercial and transportation hub of Western Mindanao. Furthermore, analysts see the P2 billion pricetag of the move to be prohibitive in an era of belt tightening. Another sources stated that the transfer of the regional center to Pagadian would make Zamboanga the center of business and trade. Yet in early 2006, the regional transfer to Pagadian was reportedly blocked by the city's congressional body for its reasons: Zamboanga will be divided into two congressional districts effective May 2007, and the population of Zamboanga is about to reach 1,000,000 residents from Limpapa in the West Coast, to Licomo in the east coast.

if the speculations were ever true, very sad zamboanga citys walk to progress had to be sacrificed. but agree with the analysst. just wonder how the rotten sys would opt for a prohibitiev budget instead of reinforcing zamboanga as an economic centre. guess, bec P2bln budget has a promising bribe deals in building pagadian. zamboanga as a major city, have institutions in placed it just need upgrading or expansion.(that would cut budget significantly). imo its position in mindanao affairs is very strtegic economically if it stays as regional centre. its the largest population centre of western mindanao why government will make it hard for the majority to reach them. certainly affects its attractiveness to prospective investors. travel time for transactions could turn them off. just a thought

Hi Sinj,

I think your mom needs to read more on the current events because the major national dailies and even the tabloids are saying Davao is probably the safest metro city in the Philippines. What's more, the expats and other foreign tourists who come to Davao hail this city to be the safest and the cleanest after having lived and set foot in the other 2 metro cities in the country.

I had a co-worker in my sales job in Davao who swore not to go back to Cebu anymore after being held-up at gunpoint, in broad daylight at that, on her way to our conference venue- The Waterfront Lahug. She was inconsolable when we came down from our room to pay her taxi that took her to the hotel. She was left with nothing but her clothes on as he was stripped of everyting including her luggage, wallet and jewelries.

That was the same perception most of us had about Cebu- that it is bastion of con-artists (mangingilad), and hold-uppers before. That perception could have lingered longer on us had we not read the news, looked at the efficiency of governance and of course the word of mouth that indeed Cebu is doing something about the problem.

Samal City set for Caracoles
By Carlo P. Mallo

ALL is set for the upcoming annual festival of the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) on April 28 to 29.

According to Igacos Mayor Rogelio Antalan, the annual festival--dubbed as Caracoles Samal 2007--will showcase the beauty and bounty of the sea.

The island-city is expecting to draw more than 60,000 spectators, residents included, to the main attractions during the festival.

Activities lined up for the two-day event include a motocross race, an island adventure race, a battle of the bands competition, and the search for the Estrella del Mar -- a beauty pageant cum fashion design competition.

The festival is one of the top three festivals being promoted by the Department of Tourism (DOT) in Southern Mindanao.

DOT Regional Director Sonia V. Garcia believes that the upcoming festival will be a good avenue to promote the island as the alternative tourist destination to Boracay.

Garcia said Igacos is way better than Boracay only that it is not as publicized.

She added that the celebration will also showcase the potential of the island-city in becoming a premiere dive spot in the country.

4T seats available for new call center
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE top official of the Transcription Alliance of Davao Inc. (Tadi) has confirmed a new contact center based in Manila, which already identified a site for its operation in Davao City, will open a total of 4,000 seats for qualified call center agents.

"I have heard that a new call center will be expanding here and what I'm sure of is that it will be opening 4,000 seats," Lizabel "Wit" Holganza, Tadi president, told Sun.Star, adding that this is a welcome development for business process outsourcing (BPO) industry in the city.

She said the city can definitely compete considering its various advantages over other places in the country.

"A lot of people in Davao are proficient in English; we have a huge number of college graduates every year; the city is a typhoon-free zone, and we are one of the most livable cities in Asia," Holganza said.

Meanwhile, Holganza, who is also the chief executive officer of the MTC Academy, the largest Tesda-accredited medical transcription school in the country, also claimed that there are three medical transcription facilities that will open in the city.

But she was not sure whether these medical transcription facilities will open this year.

"Medical transcription can not only bring dollar and peso to the city, but it also has positive impact to the city's economy," she said.

Holganza said Tadi is projecting Davao City as a primary destination of choice for those engaged in business process outsourcing.

Davao’s Balyan competes in international fests
Published : 2007-03-27

DAVAO-MADE Huling Balyan ng Buhi is set to compete in two international film festivals. Today, the movie directed by young Davaoeño Sherad Anthony Sanchez will compete in the Asian Digital Competition category of the 31st Hong Kong International Film Festival which will run until April 27. Next in line is the 20th Singapore International Film festival on April 18 to 30.

In an earlier interview, Sanchez said at least three international film festivals have invited to him to join. The 21-year-old director is hoping to break more international market for the film. Huling Balyan ng Buhi is the first full-length movie of Sherad to compete in international scene. His previous short films, including the Bankerohan-shot Apple, won in a number of international competitions.

The Mindanaoan film combines science and logic, tradition and cultural differences. It features Davao radio personality Marilyn Roque and the people of Arakan Valley, North Cotabato. Shot in Davao and Cotabato, it is touted as the very first full-length movie made in the two Mindanao localities. Huling Balyan ng Buhi was the major winner in the 2nd Cinema One Originals film festival, besting other movies with big-name stars.

It won four major awards including the Best Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Ensemble for acting for the outstanding performance for the neophyte cast of the movie. Gawad Tanglaw -- a group of critics, scholars, historians and humanities professors -- also named Sanchez’s movie as one of the best Filipino movies of 2006.

It was also the opening film in the IndieSine which launched the home of local alternative films in Manila. Huling Balyan ng Buhi tells the story of a Balyan (a tribal priestess) and the lives of her people set amidst the constant conflict between the communist insurgents and the military.

Davao celebrates 6th Araw ng Panabo

PANABO CITY (28 March) -- The 6th Araw ng Panabo formally opened yesterday (Tuesday) with the blessing of Tabaon sa Panabo set at the vicinity of Panabo Gym.

Aside from local government officials with City Mayor Rey P. Gavina at the lead, Dawn Zulueta-Lagdameo, wife of congressional aspirant Antonio F. Lagdameo Jr graced the occasion along with Gene Rose Ferrazzini, chief of staff of the 2nd District Congressional Office of Davao del Norte.

During the opening program held before the blessing of Taboan sa Panabo, Vice Mayor Ruperto Cagape Jr. called the attention of his fellow government officials and the public on the importance of "service" as an important legacy one could leave behind.

Other legacies he cited that could make one better remembered were acts of sharing wealth, knowledge put into books, and planting trees that could live for centuries.

Cagape linked his ideas of leaving legacies to sustaining the progress that Panabo had gained from its six years citihood.

This year, the city government banners the theme, "Pangandoy'ng Naumol, Bog-oson, Padayonon," to deliver its message of pushing forward the spin of development created through its transformation into a city.

The yearly founding anniversary celebration includes the Taboan sa Panabo which stage for sell locally-made products along with joy rides that people usually have a fancy experiencing during fiestas.

The Taboan sa Panabo brings back to what the city was once way back pre-historic times during which Aetas, the Kalagans (now called Davao Muslim) and the Angs (non-Muslim and non-Christian settlers) engaged in selling and in bartering in a place known as Panabo-an.

Panabo-an or taboan in Visayan dialect, meaning trading center evolved into Panabo which was later used and adopted as the official name of the place.

From being a barangay of Magugpo (now Tagum City), Panabo became a municipality in 1949 through Presidential Proclamation No. 236 signed by President Elpidio Quirino.

It acquired its citihood through Republic Act 9015 and gained public approval through a plebiscite made on March 31, 2001.

The week-long anniversary celebration from March 27 to March 31 also embraced appreciation of differences in faith as various religious affiliations converged to stage their way of giving divine thanks and praises during the Interfaith Night held last night (Tuesday).

It will also include as part of the festivity the State of the City Address of Mayor Rey P. Gavina set today (Wednesday) at the ARF Gym.

Leading political leaders of the province are expected to join the audience of Gavina's last SOTA. (PIA XI/JMDA) [top]

Davao hotel occupancy rate still at 75%
by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (28 March) -- The hotel industry in Davao City is still meeting its target despite limited events compared to last year's first quarter events.

Art Boncato, marketing manager of The Marco Polo Davao who also heads the Davao Cooperative Center for Visitors Convention (DCCVC) said they are hitting 75 percent occupancy rate and noticed the increasing of arrivals.

It may be recalled that January last year, Davao City hosted the Asean Tourism Forum that brought in thousands of visitors from different foreign countries.

Boncato who was interviewed by the Davao business reporters yesterday said among those included in the arrivals are those whose last visit to the country were about seven to ten years ago.

Davao, he said has a total of 3,000 high-end rooms available in different hotels namely, Marco Polo, 245, Waterfront Hotel, 158, Apo View, 157, Royal Mandaya, 119 and Regal (formerly Mercure Hotel), 217.

He said this is a good sign because previous visitors like them are slowly looking at Davao as a destination.

"These visitors maybe small in volume but what is important is they are looking at Davao as a destination and these are the people who pose a "wait and see" attitude towards our city and their confidence are slowly coming back," he aid.

He said they have regular corporate accounts coming from various companies in the country and the government that they consider as feather account. It could be high in numbers but low in revenues because of limited budget.

"This time we are looking at mix market and we want a diversified visitors," he said.

He said they want more leisure travelers and arrivals from different countries coming to Davao.

He acknowledged the efforts of the Arroyo administration in making Davao as an international destination.

In fact Boncato said he was told by those who joined the Asean Directors Meeting that took place at Marco Polo Hotel Davao that just ended yesterday that President Arroyo announced that the Philippines had joined the bidding for the convention of "Non-Align States" composed of different countries and indicated Davao as the site in 2009.

He said the government had been consistent in pushing Davao as the next international destination of the Philippines.

As far DCCVC is concerned, Boncato said the center operates like a marketing arm that assists events organizers in terms of venues and respond to assistance of convention organizers and other related concerns.

Boncato emphasized that they are not competing with the private groups that handles events but assist them and other convention organizers on how to do about it here in Davao.

"Our is a central body that would assist them and link them on their needs," he said.

With a start up fund, he said they will put up a website where prospective clients could check on details including specification of venues, dates, services, etc.

He said they will also produce guidebook on how to do it in Davao, do some network outside of Davao especially Manila because it is the biggest source of business. (PIA XI) [top]

PAL adds more flights
by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (27 March) -- Fulfilling a promise, the flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) will offer two additional frequencies making five flights available to passengers with the onset of the peak season by end of March this year.

PAL senior assistant vice president for Mindanao lawyer Domingo Duerme at Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM’s Karl’s Koffee on Monday said the new flights is PAL’s commitment as expressed by airline president Jaime J. Baustista in a gathering of Davao business community early this year.

Duerme said with the two schedules PAL has increased seat capacity offerings between Manila and Davao by nearly 40 percent starting this week.

“This is giving PAL clients hundred percent assurance of getting a seat for destinations between Manila and Davao,” he said.

He said the extra capacity will provide a tremendous boost to their customers in Davao where more seats are available to passengers particularly tourists bound for Davao.

He also said that the fishing and agri-business industries in Southern Mindanao will also benefit from the extra 14 tons of cargo space with the two routes.

PAL has added a late night flight to the route where PR 815 departs Manila at 6:30 p,m, arriving Davao at 8:15 p.m. and the return service PR 816 leaves Davao at 9:00 p.m. and reaches Manila at 10:45 p.m.

The other frequency that took effect March 26 thru PR 817 departs Manila at 1:05 p.m. and arrives in Davao at 2:50 p.m. and the return service PR 818, departs Davao at 3:30 p.m. that arrives in Manila at 5:15 p.m.

The frequency will initially operate five times weekly, with Wednesdays and Sundays the only exceptions to the daily timetable. By May 7, the frequency will run everyday and continue until June 3, 2007.

The months of June, July and August are peak months and the five flights schedule will return second half of September until the first week of January.

Aircrafts flying the Manila-Davao-Manila or vice versa route are A330, A340, A320 and A319 with a total seat capacity of 1,006. (PIA XI) [top]

Caracoles expected to lure more visitors
By Rizalene P. Acac

ORGANIZERS of the Caracoles festival of the Island Garden City of Samal are expecting to double the number of people who would attend the event next month. Marissa Te-Eng Fo of the Travel and Tours Promotion said with the festival has gained fame not only in the Davao Region but also other parts of the country and that she and the other organizers are expecting about 60,000 visitors would visit Island Garden City of Samal on April 28 and 29.

Te-Eng Fo said the outcome of the first Caracoles in 2005 surpassed their expectation since it gathered 30,000 people. She said the festival, which is in its third year, year will have new events in an effort to lure more tourists. Te-Eng Fo said they are enjoying all the support of the city government, the Department of Tourism (DoT) and the Samaleños as well.

She said all the resorts have signified to actively participate in the event. The resorts, she said, would offer the packages to lower the cost of their stay in the island while food stalls would be built in the streets. The theme for this year’s Caracoles is “Sundown-to-sunrise festival of shells” with activities such as the Perya y Peryantes del Calle, Regatta, Adventure Race, Bailes par Los Gentes, Estrella del Mar, Vamos a Bailari, Gloria Maris, Battle of the Bands and Boat Offering among others.

Mayor Rogelio Antalan said he wants the event to entice Samaleños to also enjoy the natural bounty that is right in front of them. “I hope that the people of Samal would also enjoy it,” he said. Antalan said he also hopes that the festival would make the place renowned in the world bringing in more tourists.

Antalan, Te-Eng Fo, Toril Regional Director Sonia Garcia, Portia Abanilla, Engr. Pastor Lozada of the Samal Business Chamber of Commerce and Industry were guests during the first press conference of Caracoles held at Matina Town Square last Tuesday.

4T seats available for new call center
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
www.sunstar.com.ph

THE top official of the Transcription Alliance of Davao Inc. (Tadi) has confirmed a new contact center based in Manila, which already identified a site for its operation in Davao City, will open a total of 4,000 seats for qualified call center agents.

"I have heard that a new call center will be expanding here and what I'm sure of is that it will be opening 4,000 seats," Lizabel "Wit" Holganza, Tadi president, told Sun.Star, adding that this is a welcome development for business process outsourcing (BPO) industry in the city.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage

She said the city can definitely compete considering its various advantages over other places in the country.

"A lot of people in Davao are proficient in English; we have a huge number of college graduates every year; the city is a typhoon-free zone, and we belong to one of the most livable cities in Asia," Holganza said.

Hotel occupancy rate in Davao still at 75%

THE hotel industry in Davao City is still meeting its target despite limited events compared to the same period last year.

Art Boncato, marketing manager of Marco Polo Davao who also heads the Davao Cooperative Center for Visitors Convention (DCCVC), said they are still hitting the 75 percent occupancy rate. He added that the arrival of local and foreign tourists has continued to increase.

It may be recalled that in January last year, Davao City hosted the Asean Tourism Forum that brought in thousands of visitors from different foreign countries.

Boncato said among those included in the arrivals are those whose last visits to the country were about seven to 10 years ago.

Davao, he said, has a total of 3,000 high-end rooms available in different hotels namely, Marco Polo -- 245; Waterfront Hotel, 158; Apo View, 157; Royal Mandaya, 119 and Regal (formerly Mercure Hotel), 217.

"These visitors maybe small in volume but what is important is they are looking at Davao as a destination and these are the people who pose a 'wait and see' attitude towards our city and their confidence are slowly coming back," he said.

Boncato said they have regular corporate accounts coming from various companies in the country and the government that they consider as feather account. It could be high in numbers but low in revenues because of limited budget.

"This time we are looking at a mixed market," he said.

He said they want more leisure travelers from different countries coming to Davao.

He acknowledged the efforts of the Arroyo administration in making Davao as an international destination.

In fact, Boncato said he was told by those who joined the Asean Directors Meeting that took place at Marco Polo Hotel Davao that President Arroyo announced the Philippines' intention to join the bidding for the convention of "Non-Aligned States" composed of different countries and indicated Davao as the venue in 2009.

As far as DCCVC is concerned, Boncato said the center operates like a marketing arm that assists events organizers in terms of venues and responds to assistance of convention organizers and other related concerns.

Boncato emphasized that they are not competing with the private groups that handle events but assist them and other convention organizers on how to go about these in Davao.

Davao City (29 March) -- Touted as the region’s most elegant bus and jeepney terminal, the P 38 million facility started its operation yesterday in Panabo city.

The P38 million worth terminal which is designed to improve the access of urban residents to municipal infrastructure is a project of the Mindanao Basic Urban Services Sector Project (MBUSSP) under the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) that granted P5 million for its construction. An amount of P32.8 million was loaned by the local government from the Asian Development Bank (ADB and the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) to pursue the project.

Panabo’s newest terminal boasts its 10 diagonal parking bays for buses with elevated concrete walkways and 19 parking bays for jeepneys.

It includes a separate parking spaces for private cars and tricycles, collection ticket booths, passenger waiting areas, and administration office, comfort rooms and pantry at the mezzanine floor.

DILG assistant secretary Brian Yamsuan, who attended yesterday’s ceremonial blessing, commended the local initiators who completed the construction on time.“ This project is expected to further boost trade and commerce here in your city," he told the Panaboans during the said ceremony.

The MBUSSP is among the initiatives of the government to improve the quality of life in Mindanao by institutionalizing the capacity of the LGU to provide the public with infrastructure and other essential services.

Besides terminals, the said project also provides other services to 11 provinces in Mindanao such as construction and rehabilitation of public markets, gymnasiums, transport terminals, cultural centers, and water supply.

P23-M farm-to-market roads to link Davao ARCs
by F. Montanez

Davao City (29 March) -- A P23 Million farm to market roads would soon be completed in the barangays of Tawantawan and Banarao, Talandang, Tugbok, Davao City.

The residents of Barangay Tawantawan, Baguio shall enjoy the 4.7 kilometer road concreting in two phases: Phase 1-Rehabilitation of Tawantawan Road to Barangay Proper and the Rehabilitation of Tawantawan road to Maligatong area.

Also the residents of Sitio Banarao and Talandang can find convenience in the rehabilitation of 3.5 kms. Talandang proper to Banaraw road with spot concreting of 231.40 meters.

Different committees were formed to monitor and ensure proper implementation of the projects according to its design and specifications and program of work.

Among the committees formed were: the Inventory Committee, Quality Control Committee, Work Team Committee, Savings Mobilization Committee and the Operations and Maintenance Committee.

In the Memo of Agreement, the project must be properly maintained within ten years so that it will not be reverted to loan status. if that happens it shall be charged against the internal revenue allotment (IRA) of the barangay. That’s how important the role of the committees, especially the Operations and Maintenance committee. A twice a year inspection shall be conducted by the Provincial Inspectorate Team after the project is completed. Billboards shall be constructed at the entrance of the project sites.

In an interview made by Information officer Fraulein Montanez with Kagawad Aragones of Brgy. Tawantawan he said that the project will open employment to the residents. Unskilled workers like laborers and masons shall be hired during the duration of the project. And he hopes that the community, business sector and other business sector and other stakeholders would cooperate so that the FMR construction would be completed according to its program of work.

Project program facilitator Ruel Larosa said that the project is just one of the component-package under the Agrarian Reform Communities project (ARCP) funded by Asian Development Bank, along with agricultural development and institutional development and project management components.

It is a project of the Dept. of Agrarian Reform (DAR) funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under the Agrarian Reform Communities Project (ARCP) and this program is expected to end by June 2007.

The farm to mark road or rural infra is only one of the components of ADB ARCP along with Enterprise Development and Institutional development.

The P23 million project is expected to benefit not only the 661 agrarian reform beneficiaries of barangays Tawantawan and Talandang but the whole community as well. DAR expects countryside development would spur economic growth for the farmers. (DAR/ARCP/PIA XI) [top]

Delirious in Davao

By Neil Ray Ramos
Undoubtedly, we are among the hapless who grew up strangers in our own land.

Sure, we have gone to visit quite a few of the more familiar destinations in the immediate vicinity of our polluted Metro but ultimately going further about exploring different parts of our wondrous archipelago have remained in large parts a wet dream—a seeming itch that we hardly got to scratch.

Obviously, these journeys are more like a glorified version of the field trips we had as schoolchildren.

This much was the case when we recently visited exotic sounding Tagum, the city capital of one of the more beautiful regions in the far south—mesmerizing Davao del Norte.

More than just being about a celebration of music and its various permutations, the sojourn proved for us a rediscovery that is well, exhausting, but ultimately enlightening.

Afforded a beautiful view of majestic Mt. Apo as we arrived in verdant Davao City, we thought it a good indication for our visit especially after friends told us that it usually hides itself behind thick clouds. Our hunch proved accurate as our famished party (thanks to a very much delayed flight that allowed us to reach Davao City mid-noon) were led almost immediately to a quaint little seafood resto boasting of being unique in that they have a hundred variety of seafood recipes (more than any resto in the archipelago)—Marinatuna.

Domingo Ang, owner of the fab resto served us tuna cooked in more ways than one could imagine with each as delicious as the last.

Ang credits their imaginative cuisine to five of the major fishing grounds of the Philippines. “Being that our seawaters are very rich and diverse, it is a norm for a Davao local to learn how to cook and prepare seafood in a variety of ways. Having said that, what we do here is to provide everything under one roof for our customers’ pleasure and convenience.”

After the sumptuous repast, we left Davao City for Tagum.

We got the chance to visit the Tadeco farm as the road getting to Tagum—coming in as we did through Davao City—pass right through it. The Tadeco farm, far from merely producing and exporting bananas, was also into handicrafts with a division solely devoted to creating beautiful ornament and papercraft made from banana trunks and leaves as well as abaca. .

We dozed off on the drive to nearby Kapalong to stopover at Pag-asa farms. Severino Mercado, a jolly if chatty mestizo welcomed us to their family’s place with open arms allowing us to stumble about in their mini zoo and wide, wide, wide orchid nursery.

“More than our excellent banana produce, Kapalong is known as the caving capital of Mindanao as it is dotted with lots of interesting caves favored by many spelunkers including the ‘Otso Cave,’ the ‘Alena Cave’ and the ‘Okbot Cave.’ We also have the world-famous ‘Suaon Underground River,’ ’’ mentioned another proudly.

The Kaimunan dinner festival proved fun and festive with lots of good food (most memorable was the mushroom and chicken cooked by the local natives in the traditional way: through bamboo poles) and native entertainment courtesy of local high school kids and a couple dressed in tribal garb.

When we arrived at Tagum that night, the merriment was already underway. Echoing through the PA was the booming sound of a young band mustering their best Bon Jovi impression. Amid the lustful cheers and jeers of a multitude of people and a searing guitar solo, we were promptly introduced to the city mayor’s wife, Alma Uy, who is also the chairperson of the festival committee. Graciously, she offered for us to partake in a delicious feast of barbecued chicken that she and her team had prepared especially for us.

“Our aim is to establish Tagum as the music capital of Mindanao. Right now, the event is decidedly very much confined as it involve mainly participants from the city schools but soon we will get to incorporate participants from all over,” she excitedly shared even as our mind registered the throng applauding the arrival of a special guest, ‘hot babe’ Jen Rosendhal.

Much of next day’s activities consisted of a mini-tour of sorts of all Davao del Norte’s eight municipalities and other cities. Sadly though this didn’t include a visit to the Island Garden City of Samal—where most of the regions beautiful beaches are located including the famous Pearl Farm Beach Resort —but rather a church (ostensibly housing one of the biggest rosary we’ve even seen) and the refurbished city cemetery, of which the locals are pretty proud of.

We soon found out that the battle of the bands we witnessed the previous night was a small facet of a large showcase that also include among others a Raprapan (that’s a rap contest actually), Harana ng Bayan (where each barangay around Tagum get to compose and perform one original song and present it MTV style), Huni Ug Kasikas sa Plaza (Drum, bugle and lyre competition) Avenida Musika (Marching band competition), and Awitan-Limahan (Quintet singing competition).

That afternoon, an unexpected downpour urged the staging of Huni Ug Kasikas sa Plaza into a packed gymnasium. After a while the sauna-like heat as with hearing a thousand and one versions of boom tarat tarat (a favorite among the contestants) got to us, provoking ludicrous screaming on our part that gladly, many mistook for enthusiasm.

The Musikahan, said Tagum City Mayor Rey Uy is a celebration of music as a means to uplift the spirit as well as a new, exciting avenue to generate income.

“Tagum is a city center to everything in Mindanao. It is accessible to a mixture of migrants, which include Cebuanos, Ilonggos and Ilocanos. And with a variety of ethnic groups thrown in including Manobos, Bagobos, Maguindanons and Muslims, among others, nobody here is considered a stranger. Everyone is literally a friend hence the love, respect and reception that our women folk accord you is all but good old hospitality.”

Aye, Davao could get you so delirious indeed.

UCPB earmarks P900M for SMEs in VisMin

THE United Coconut Planters Bank (UCPB) is stepping up its credit operations in the Visayas and Mindanao and is allocating P900 million for lending to small and medium-sized enterprises in the two regions this year.

This is to spur export-oriented activities, local commerce and agricultural production, and generate employment opportunities there.

Davao City-based UCPB vice president Angelito Estanislao, who heads the bank's middle market lending operations in the Visayas and Mindanao, said the bank will focus on providing working capital and trade-related financing to small and medium-sized export firms, intermediate goods producers, traders and distributors of commodities, rural banks engaged micro-finance, and farmers' cooperatives providing production credit to their members.

"These are the businesses that are labor-intensive and have numerous village-based suppliers; their expansion will generate the most number of new jobs at the grass roots level and drive consumption, thus creating a huge multiplier effect on the regions' local economies," Estanislao said.

The funds earmarked for the Visayas and Mindanao represent nearly half of the P1.9 billion that UCPB has set aside for middle market loans this year, he added.

UCPB will channel the loans through its regional offices and branch network. The bank has two regional offices in these regions and 38 branches: 21 in the Visayas and 17 in Mindanao.

Estanislao said UCPB is directing its focus towards the middle market segment because it is huge and growing but remains underserved, particularly in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Last year, he said, the bank beefed up its middle market unit, doubling the number of relationship managers assigned to service the segment, and organizing them into four dedicated teams, one of which is devoted to cover the Visayas-Mindanao markets.

UCPB middle market portfolio grew to P3.7 billion in 2006 from P3.0 billion a year ago, and the bank is eyeing to expand this further P5.6 billion this year.

"Our stepped up operation in the Visayas and Mindanao will be a key driver of the growth this year," Estanislao said.

UCPB has a strong presence in the Visayas and Mindanao. Apart from its regional offices and branches, the bank has a subsidiary, UCPB Savings Bank, which has 15 of its 33 branches in the two regions.

It also has an affiliate, the UCPB-CIIF Finance Development Corporation, which is doing development lending to small coconut farmers and has tie-ups with 119 rural banks and 684 cooperative banks and credit cooperatives.
