Panabo mayor eyes infra completion before term-end
by RG Alama

Davao City (30 March) -- Panabo City Mayor Rey P. Gavina said he is hopeful that the three major infrastructure programs of the City will be finished by the time he is about to bow out of office.

He said the contractor has assured him that the new City hall and the City's Cultural and Tourism Center (gymnasium) would be completed just as his term ends in June.

"The contractor told me that he is working doubly hard, that the new City hall would be completed weeks before I would bow out, I just said I'd even be happy if it will be finished one day before my last day in office." Mayor Gavina said during his last State of the City Address held last Wednesday, May 28 at the Antonio R. Floirendo gym.

Gavina is on his third and last term of office as the first City Mayor of Panabo.

Meanwhile the new gymnasium is also nearing completion, the Mayor also said that before his term ends he is hopeful that he can host a PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) game in the modern civic center.

The Mayor also bared that the new slaughterhouse is now almost completed. The modern slaughterhouse is also the only abattoir in the region to have an integrated facility for Halal products.

However the Mayor lamented that the electrical wirings that supplies power to the slaughterhouse have been stolen, he appealed to the constituents to help the police in getting the culprits and recovering the stolen wirings which yield precious bronze metals.

Later after the SOCA, the Mayor and the rest of the City officials proceeded to blessing of the nearby Integrated Bus and Jeepney Terminal complex, the P38-million transportation facility is just one of the major infrastructure programs that were built and completed during Mayor Gavina's nine-year tenure. Sinews of Syllables: A Poetry Night
By John Bengan

ON FEBRUARY 15, four days after Sylvia Plath's death anniversary, UP-Mindanao's BA English (Creative Writing) program held its biggest performance poetry act in campus.

Sinews of Syllables -- a suite of poetry readings set to music and movement -- was a collaboration of CW students -- freshmen to seniors -- supported by the program's core faculty with the special participation of selected UP Mindanao Bayla Vinta dancers.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage

The show was the program's main event, celebrating the UP Mindanao 12th Anniversary and the National Arts Month.

Bringing together nine pieces, the student performers gave interpretations that varied from contemporary dance, dramatic monologue, to punk rock slam; all the poems recited from memory.

Faculty members selected poems to be performed, some of which later set to contemporary music and dance routines, with a team of students inserting extemporized images that were later projected onstage as a performance went on.

Other than poems from Modern favorites like cummings and Sexton, Sinews of Syllables featured Cebuano poetry of Adonis Durado's and Corazon Almerino's caliber.

Meanwhile, a pair of students, hidden in half-light, delivered a lyric poem by Cesar Ruiz Aquino in the manner of a round-song.

The evening began with incantation. Alejandro Abadilla's "Ako And Daigdig" was the opening mantra to the Bayla Vinta dancers' contemporary routine, entrancing the packed CHSS Audio Visual Room.

Jean Claire Dy, humanities instructor and the show's artistic director, provided the lovely Odissi-inspired choreography.

Assisting Dy is another humanities instructor, John Bengan. The department's chair, Prof. Nino Soria de Veyra oversaw stage design and light mixing, making occasional adjustments that later he was deemed "choreography paramedic." Professor de Veyra also coughed up the show's catchy title.

Excitement after the opener continued with CW junior Hazel Genosas's vicious reading of Almerino's "Tabag sa Manananggal, Human Hukmi sa Ginoo (The Manananggal's response, after God's judgment)."

In honor of Sylvia Plath, Kaeos Angelo, a sophomore, slipped into her silk nightdress and breathed mad life to Plath's villanelle.

Her fellow sophomore Allen Samsuya complemented "Mad Girl's Love Song" with a haunting guitar improved. And before all the world dropped dead, Anne Sexton came with her "Again and Again and Again."

Mae Ann Pineda, a senior, gave a breathtaking recital, stoking the sexy in Sexton's brutal metaphors.

One of Bayla Vinta's youngest members, Catherine Rose Bengan interpreted Bjork's own take on E.E. Cummings's "it may not always be so, and I say."

The sonnet, transformed into a beautifully eerie track in Bjork's Medulla, was the stimulus to Dy's somber yet playful Yoga-inspired choreography.

Another highlight was Darcy Rubino's charmingly dissonant tuning of "i like my body when it is with your body," another Cummings gem.

Rubino, a CW freshman, set the mischievous poem to melodic punk rock. With Samsuya strumming on, Rubino's thrashing, pelvic performance brought the house down, not one lyric or note unsung.

After the punk assault, Jonasyl Auxtero, a graduating student and children stories writer, sent the crowd on another trip, moving lithely into Massive Attack's "Teardrop."

Capping the 40-minute show is a disembodied voice mouthing Adonis Durado's "Balaki Ko Day Samtang Gasakay Tag Habal-Habal (On this motorcycle, my dear, read me a poem)," matched on stage by a series of flashing visions of endless dirt roads. Never has a Cebuano courtship poem about motorcycle-riding sounded so fitting.

After the onslaught of syllables, smattering of sighs and shouts, Sinews of Syllables gave UP Mindanao its most memorable evening of poetry, movement and music in recent years. The muses of Bago Oshiro just couldn't wait to rock this sleepy mountain.

MTCA offers program for high school grads
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE MTC Academy (Davao Branch), the largest Tesda-accredited medical transcription school in the country today, launched the "High School Program" for students who wanted to be trained and to become a medical transcriptionist in three semesters.

"The program is a three-semester medical transcription training, it is an option for high school graduating students who cannot afford to enroll in a four-year course," Lizabel Holganza, chief executive officer and president of MTC Academy, Davao Branch, told Sun.Star.

Holganza added that after a student finishes the three-semester medical transcription training with the MTCA, his chances are the same as those who studied and graduated at the academy.

"They have equal chance to get a job," she said.

Meanwhile, Holganza said that the MTCA is exerting efforts to raise awareness among students of different schools in Davao City regarding the positive impact of medical transcription industry.

She said they are targeting to visit all schools, if possible, to orient the students not only in the private schools, but also those in the public schools.

PIA Press Release
2007/03/31

Davao Transport Terminal expects brisk Holy week

Davao City (31 March) -- The Davao City Overland Transport Terminal (DCOTT) expects a 15 percent increase from the 15,000 passengers it served daily to varied destinations within Mindanao during the Holy Week.

DCOTT chief Magno Adalin said they are conducting security check to make sure that travelers are safe while traveling .

With 750 trips daily, he said they would also expect more bus schedules as the DCOTT operates almost 24 hours.

At 1:00 in the morning buses start to ply to different routes with the last schedule trip in the evening at past 10, he said.

"But we expect more trips because normally during Holy Week more people travel to the provinces and to other parts of Mindanao," he said.

He said that they also served Philtranco, a bus company that transport passengers to Manila.

Big buses are charge P25 per trip while the medium ones at P15, he said.

The security of the transport terminal he said is being carried out by personnel of Task Force Davao and the Davao City Police Office and from time to time they field the K9s to check the baggages of passengers.

Aladin assured that all passengers and buses that depart from the DCOTT pass security check.

Meanwhile Task Force Davao head Col. Alan Luga said that checkpoints are installed in key areas within the boundaries of the city both from the north and the south and in point of entries leading towards the city proper. (PIA) [top]

5 of 7 species of marine turtles worldwide are in Davao
by Glenda @ 12:27 pm. Filed under News

by Romy Sabaldan

Davao City — The Hawksbill turtle was our main focus of discussion along with four other species of marine turtles which are found to have made the coastal areas of the Davao Gulf as their sanctuary.

But another exciting information is that out of the seven species known worldwide, five are in the Davao Gulf and the surrounding coastal areas, according to marine ecologists during Wednesday’s Ugnayan sa Royal Mandaya Hotel along Palma Gil Street, Davao City.

The Hawksbill rediscovery at the Matina Aplaya, some four kilometers from downtown Davao City, was a major find but another thing exciting is that she is not alone.

There’s also the Green Sea Turtle, the Leatherback, Loggerhead, and Olive Ridley Turtle.Just recently, the sighting of the big fish called the whale shark has also increased ecological awareness in this part of the country.

Not all of us have seen live the playful Long-Spouted Spinner Dolphin, but they’re just there for sometime now together with the Fraiser’s Dolphin, Risso’s Dolphin and the Indo-Pacific Bottlenose.

These and the whole scheme of marine life of the Davao Gulf areas is now the subject of a major inter-agency concern lead by the Save Davao Gulf Foundation, currently under Councilor Leonardo Avila as president. This is one big task, but Avila is not alone.

The EcoGulf which is supported by USAid, according to him is one very valuable ally together with the Task Force Pawikan. These private sector-led environmental groups are closely coordinating their moves with the Department of Energy and Natural Resources, the Philippine Coast Guard - Southeastern Mindanao District and the Davao City Government particularly Avila’s committee at the Sangguniang Panlungsod, the committee on environment and natural resources.

Avila said that all efforts centered towards saving and bringing more life back in the Davao Gulf as a way of achieving food security for the people of the whole Davao region. The people of the Davao region stand to benefit from all these efforts of saving and protecting a rich marine sanctuary, the Davao Gulf, Avila said. I've tried the Kapatagan trail to APO and yes there are some striking semblances in the topography but I guess this is more of the eastern side whereas Kapatagan is to the southern side. The way to the bloulder field from Sibulan merges to the route from the Kapatagan side and that's why they had their first lay-over at the Campo Uno where we also took respite during our trek in 2001.

^^ Grabe... No offense, but maintaining an internet cafe is real hard work. Let me count the expenses:

1 - The Computers (upgrade at least a year)
2 - The Electricity
3 - The workers
4 - The Internet connection
5 - The spot

So the Floirendos manage it well then... I'm optimistic about it. However, there are more questions up my sleeves:

1 - When will the Museo Dabawenyo really open?
2 - There is a new tirechanging shop near monteverde avenue. Dunno the name though.
3 - Any new companies beefing up for Davao?
4 - About the condo project in SM, how much was that? I forgot the unit though, but I think it was made by DMSF. The pics were posted here days ago...

As for now, some random thoughts.

THE BEST SIOPAO IN DAVAO
(Sorry for making this list, but I've been a gastronomical wanderlust though, so I'd better list this one):

1. Siopao Factory (located in L. Garcia St.)
2. Kusina Dabaw
3. Sunya Restaurant

1 - Chinese music is playing
2 - Hanzi is listed in some notices
3 - Chinese (some pure) are plying
4 - No closed shops...

Sorry for posting this question, but I'm just wondering, where is the best place to invest, Uyanguren or San Pedro? Sa uyanguren man god, when I pass by, it's very bustling, but in San Pedro, I'm not sure... Just my thoughts though.

San Pedro is on a rennaissance of sort. Look ar Lachmi, Banco Davao, Everlasting Bazaar. Ther are refurbishing their stores. There's a lot more jumping into the frey so it's no brainer the place is also good for investment. To be rather sure, your best bet is to conduct your FS though.

At least. It's getting lively though. Uyanguren has a kind of multicultural charm that sets you in it, while San Pedro is renewing. Maybe I'm just setting my sights in San Pedro too much.

There are many classic shops in Uyanguren. when the malls weren't there, we used to shop at Happy Emporium. We used to go upstairs in NCCC and we used to eat lomi and siopao in the NDSR.

I sometimes (due to time constraint and heavy traffic in downtown area) bank and shop for office supplies, computer wares and get car repairs around Chinatown- traffic can be a headache at times but lesser than downtown nonetheless.

Sorry if I'm flood posting though, and all those nostalgia cropping up in me. Listing siopao shops and internet cafes. Davao's such a great place to remember.

Way back the nineties, when this city never had any malls, yet, there was Gaisano Center in UM. At that time, it was unusually filled. We usually bought many stuff there like toys and clothes. And after all that, we go down to the snack bar to dine with fish in tanks.

At that time also, the Davao Central Warehouse Club is the best place to be when you're just going for the groceries. DCWC has a lot of things to choose from, from old books to toys.

Tapos, there was this shop near Granland, a bodega surplus shop (I forgot the name) that I only visited for once. They sold many surplus items, like computer games, old computers and stuff like that. I think it was called as EAGA, but the name already faded out of my memory.

SPED also had a branch in Rizal at that time. Not that I'm a special student, but they had a wonderful branch near to what is now known as Iron Horse.

Assumption School of Davao wasn't known as Assumption College of Davao yet.

The land where SM was, in 1993, was the site of a circus act. I remembered the time when the circus act came there. My school gave me tickets for a prize, but we went out because we'll miss out X-Men. also, that was a site of a well-known Karnabal, but then, those were the days.

So much for nostalgia...

I shopped a lot in that store in Lanang too, I guess the name was Treasure Hunt or something. There's an offshoot of that store in Chinatown called Lots for Less but I prefered that one in Lanang. It's where I bought my entertainment centre, and electric grass trimmer which I never got to use. Farming is not my cup of tea, too bad.

^^ Nope... Treasure Hunt is a PX kind of store (thank you Batang PX) It was near Maryknoll. The store closed shop maybe mga 1999. Now it's a furniture shop.

Japanese bizmen push Mindanao development
By Grace L. Plata

WITH the establishment of a Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Mindanao (JCCM), the island can expect an eventual lifting of negative travel advisories that will boost development, said Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. president Domingo Duerme.

In an interview before Saturday's launching of the Japanese chamber, Duerme, who is also vice president for Mindanao of the Philippine Airlines (PAL), said the setting up of JCCM in Davao City means an increased degree of confidence in the economic potential and the peace and order situation of Mindanao.

JCCM president Sumihiro Nakao, in a press conference, said JCCM was hatched 10 years ago but this was delayed by the weakness of the presence of Japanese enterprises in Mindanao and the unstable peace and order situation.

But Nakao said studies have been conducted as to the viability of such move.
"With the big improvement of the political, peace and order and the economic situation of Mindanao, we have decided this is the best time to start," Nakao said.

Aside from strengthening the diplomatic relationship between Mindanao and Japan, JCCM aims to help Mindanao development by pouring in more investments.

According to JCCM vice president Yoichi Amano, they will make sure that Japan will cooperate with local companies and local government units to draft policies that will be beneficial to both Japan and Mindanao.

"We will initially get involved in agri-business endeavors," Amano said as they see a huge potential in Mindanao's vast agricultural lands.

Davaoh!! : Nature at its best (Touring - Davao)

Davao on the south eastern seaboard of Mindanao, is perhaps the most cosmopolitan and colorful of all Philippine cities. Its rich culture, abundant natural resources, forests, wildlife sanctuary and the imposing presence of Mt. Apo (the tallest mountain in the country), are attracting more tourists each year.

Increased tourism has made Davao one of the Philippines` fastest growing city. The Davao City limits sprawl over 244,000 hectares, considered the largest in the world in terms of land area, leaving ample space for environmentally friendly expansion and development.

Getting Around

We don`t advise members to take their cars with them to Davao due to the high costs involved. There are plenty of car rental shops in the city anyway. To reach some of Davao`s popular tourist sites, renting a car gives you added fl exibility and convenience. With a car, you can go even to the remotest places. The good thing about Davao City is that most roads are paved.

Fly High Davao!
by Dennis Reyes

D avao City is both new and old, with a flourishing metropolis of business districts and cosmopolitan villages on one hand, and a rural landscape of hills and valleys featuring virgin forests and exotic flora and fauna on the other. In this city, migrants from all over the country live harmoniously and work hand in hand with indigenous tribes of the Bagobo, Manobo, Mandaya, and Bilaan in making Davao the hub of commerce and industry in the Southern Mindanao region.

Primarily an agricultural area, Davao boasts of almost all kinds of tropical fruits, among them the durian, citrus, mangoosten, banana and pineapple that are among the country's leading export commodities. Also one of its growing industries is the cut-flower production. With 985,274 dozens annual volume of production, the city is able to supply 60% of the total demand in the Philippines, with exports showing considerable growth annually. The healthy business climate and the rich pool of skilled workers have also attracted a steady flow of investments through the years.

Davao offers visitors with attractions that are uniquely its own. The city is home of the majestic monkey-eating Philippine Eagle, the world's largest eagle; Mt. Apo, the country's highest peak; and the waling-waling, a rare orchid of exceptional beauty. The most popular festival in Davao City is the Kadayawan Festival celebrated in August. The celebration showcases the vibrant and colorful traditions of its indigenous tribes expressed in song, dance, and crafts. And there's definitely more. Davao is also known for its exquisite beaches and world-class resorts where one can bask in the sun and enjoy the fine sand and clear waters. Visitors can also enjoy quite a handful of activities like scuba diving, golf, trekking, cultural immersion, and even shopping.

Outland adventure

By DYAN CASTILLEJO GARCIA

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/su.jpg
Sports Unlimited has never bonded this way before.

But Outland Adventure in Davao made us reply on one another, support one another, encourage one another, even, carry and step on each other.

If you want to put your team through an honest to goodness test of trust and togetherness, Outland Adventure in Davao is what you need to look for.

Alright Sports Unlimited, ready or not… it's time to bond!

Alright, alright. We know what you’re thinking. It's just a simple log. What's so hard about getting on it?

You are exactly right. It's not hard at all to get on this log if you’re the only one getting on it.

Try five people getting on it at one time, suddenly it ain't so simple anymore. Suddenly.. you realize the hard way, why this activity is called the "Swinging Log."

Being five on the log already makes it so difficult to keep the log from swinging. Add to that having a comedian like gene on your team and then gigglers like Gene Rose and Jackie as the other two on the log, it just makes it impossible to stay on

Remember this is all about team work and equally relying on each team member for the overall success of the team.

One member falls off the whole team looses. There's just too much laughing gong on and not enough focus from everyone That’s why we fell short of the 19-second record.

Let's try this again. Our second try was even worst than the first.

Now our bonding was turning into fighting. Alright, everyone had to calm down and realize that fighting with each other will not help us achieve our goal we needed to help each other out instead.

Let's do this one last time… and this time, let's do it for the team, 23 seconds on the Swinging Log! We did it! We beat the 19-second record and all it took was each member making a commitment to focus and wanting to succeed.

For the team!

It was one of those great surprises.

My partner Marc decides to join his first novice 4x4 competition that was also going on during the first "Davao Great Outdoor Week."
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/su2.jpg

This time my partner did not only impress the girls with his body and looks, he also impressed the guys with his 4x4 skills.

My partner Marc admits to not being the competitive type at all but when he gets behind the wheel, some strange force comes over him.

Marc's decision to join this competition was a spur of the moment thing and lots of times… it’s the spur of the moment stuff that makes your day.

Marc always has a good time when it comes to 4x4 action but it did not take him long to agree that yes...having a good time is what counts.

But being able to say, "I was the best of all," is a feeling like no other.

You know how they say, "Actions speak louder than words." Well... that applies exactly to this situation, when our team was asked to conquer this 12-foot wall with absolutely no support except each other.

The way we looked doing this challenge says it all.

Watch our actions speak about how determined we were to achieve our goal of everyone getting over the wall by hook or by crook.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/su3.jpg

The swinging log was about three feet above the ground. The wall was 12 feet high that’s why my team could afford to laugh and even crack a few jokes.

But the catwalk was a different story.

Nothing new for Marc and I we've been higher and we've jumped from a lot taller so we just enjoyed the challenge.

We just refuse to fall off we had to make it across. No ifs or buts about it.

But for Gene, who has never been this high all by himself and who's only experience of a jump was a " jumping jack," this catwalk was just a little too much too soon.

As for Jackie we could not believe how easy she made crossing the catwalk look.

Maybe she has finally gotten over her fear of heights. Then again maybe she brought her "imaginary friend" to help her out.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/su4.jpg
It was Gene Rose turn and to be honest, we were very surprised she even agreed to be part of our team let alone be on this catwalk she never thought she would find herself in this predicament.

This definitely was a tall order even for Gene Rose. Gene Rose did not make it all the way across the catwalk but just seeing her trusting completely and jumping off the catwalk was a big big step.

The catwalk was a perfect example of fear turning into fun once you conquer it

At Outland Adventure they call this activity zipwire.

We are more familiar with it being called "slide for life."

How cool is this to get to the jump off point of the zipwire you have to cross the lake on a bamboo raft and then there's a short trek through a thick forest.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/su5.jpg

Imagine how much fun your group would have doing this all together in such beautiful surroundings.

At this point of our team building experience we are now feeling a lot closer to each other and have so much more confidence in each other.

So doing the zipwire was a lot less scary and so much more enjoyable.

The cable here in Outland Adventure is longer than what we are used to about 100 meters we are told.

So we have more time to say “Weeeeeeee!”

Sliding above a lake made it feel even more like we were in a scene from "Indiana Jones.”

Excellent fun! Everybody passed this activity with "flying" colors or should I say "sliding" colors.

This body-building contest also held during the 1st Davao Great Outdoor Week was a nice treat for everyone watching, judging as well as competing Marc may know a thing or two about having a six-pack.. but with all due respect to my partner, these guys had six-packs all over their bodies.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/su6.jpg

Anyone who knows anything about working out and lifting weights will agree that win or loose, having a body good enough to even compete in this kind of a competition already has set themselves apart from the rest when it comes to discipline and dedication to fitness and health.

Admiration and Congratulations to the winners and hats off to everyone else who competed.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/su7.jpg

Big big salutes are in order for everyone who had anything to do with putting together this 1st Davao great outdoor week.

What a successful event it was and what an enjoyable time it was for everyone participating and watching over 22 activities going on at the same time all over Davao.

This will only make you conclude how diverse Davao is and how Davaoeños from the islands to the highlands, love to be outdoors.

As far as Sports Unlimited is concerned, we can say only this about the 1st Davao Great Outdoor Week: " We can't wait for the second!"

Davao's Corteza, Basas eye crowns

DAVAO City bets Lee Vann Corteza and Mary Ann Basas will eye for crowns after ousting their rivals in the 2nd BSCP National Pool Championships at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila Friday night.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage

Corteza survived an 11-10 win over Dennis Orcollo in the men's semi-finals in the evening after beating Ramil "Bebeng" Gallego, 9-6, in the quarterfinals in the afternoon.

Basas turned back 2005 Southeast Asian Games double gold medalist Rubilen Amit, 7-4, in the semis to stay alive for the P200,000 women's champion purse. She was set to play against Irish Rañola.

Corteza, who hails from Mintal, will battle Marlon Manalo for the title and the P500,000 prize in the championship match ongoing as of Saturday.

Corteza said he'll face Manalo for the first time in a formal tournament.

"I've beaten him in a money game before. I'm trying to control my nerves to get me through this championship game," Corteza said in text messages to Sun.Star Davao Saturday.

He earlier lost to Carlo Biado, 6-9, in the winner's bracket but later recovered with wins over Rodrigo Geronimo, 9-8, Antonio Gabica, 9-5, Jharome Peña, 9-6 and Godofredo Ducanes.

The cuefest is organized by the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines. It wil serve as a basis for the RP team composition in the coming 24th SEA Games in Bangkok, Thailand. (MLSA)

Tofu to sawa
By Stella A. Estremera
Goin' Places

IT'S Holy Week and a lot of you will be looking for food that will do your conscience well -- no meat.

The invitation by Krua Thai to try their new vegetarian menu thus came just in time and will have to shelve for the moment the place Deng and I visited earlier last week because we ate pork barbecue and steak there.

Ian was urging me to hurry up after I said I'll just catch up with them since I was still finishing something in the office.

"Dali! Dali! Dali!" he texted.

I still took my time though, work first.

I finally arrived to see fellow journalists Debbie, Ian, Maya, and Amy with Mang Bert all looking stuffed and all set to feed me. I missed the photo session of the food when these were still freshly made up though. Darn. so I just have to make do with their printed menu.

Anyway, as soon as I sat down, Ian was pushing plate upon plate of tofu toward me, urging me to try this and that and this and that because they're masarap, spicy, sweet, whatever... until finally Amy prevailed on him to stop and let me eat in peace.

First off... tom yam tofu or tom yam without the shrimp. Perfect.

Next, tofu in red curry... hmmm...

Then, tofu in soy sauce, tofu in sweet and sour saice, tofu in panang curry... then a break! Vegetarian spring rolls... followed by Phad thai tofu, tofu in red curry, fried tofu with sweet sauce, tofu in green curry soup, tofu in yellow curry soup, tofu in coconut milk soup, tofu with cashew nuts... arrrgggh!

Thirteen dishes in all. My no-rice diet came to naught as two hours later, my pants button was ready to pop out and I was brimming with tofu.

Well, it was a sampling of their vegetarian menu and so we were given a taste of all 13 viands and vegetarian fried rice (I didn't try this, remember I'm on a no-rice diet). That means, you don't have to order them all as well. One or two will do.

My faves? Tom Yam, because I like Tom Yam, period; Tofu in green curry soup because it had those dried citrusy leaves that I like to nibble on and had some more veggies aside from tofu in it; the tofu in red curry; the bean sprout with tofu, and; the tofu in soy sauce.

I can't say these ones are better than the others, it's just that I'm not so much on anything sugary sweet in food and I like them hot as well, so that narrows down the list of 13 to five and my waistline returns to its original form -- droopy. Arrrgh!

Davao Wild Water Adventure
[Upload image] Here you'll find lots of crocodiles, a few taken from the Davao River. They come in different sizes, the largest one aptly named Pangil, is about 20 feet long.

One of Davao's newest attraction is white water rafting on the Davao River. The 3-hour run starts from the highlands of Baguio District, then down to Calinan, and then the lowlands. All in all there's about 30 rapids of varying degrees of difficulty. There's also additional activities for the more adventurous, like cliffside rappelling.

San Pedro is on a rennaissance of sort. Look ar Lachmi, Banco Davao, Everlasting Bazaar. Ther are refurbishing their stores. There's a lot more jumping into the frey so it's no brainer the place is also good for investment. To be rather sure, your best bet is to conduct your FS though.

how i wish that they'll have san pedro as a promenading area complete with parks (with those palms, para retro kaayo), al fresco eats, etc. also, kung naay renovation sa mga buildings circa 30s labing mas maayo.

Sorry if I'm flood posting though, and all those nostalgia cropping up in me. Listing siopao shops and internet cafes. Davao's such a great place to remember.

Way back the nineties, when this **** never had any malls, yet, there was Gaisano Center in UM.

I remember it too the Russian Circus sad to say they were not paid but some did their thing in Square Circle :D really they do the acrobatic inside the establishment.

Davao Lass Makes History as First Filipina West Point Graduate

By Cathy S. Babao Guballa, Roxanne T. Estrellado Limjoco
Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines -- She had only asked to be part of the Philippine Military Academy, “but God gave me West Point.”

This is how Christy Isis “Ice” Achanzar, a 24-year-old native of Davao ****, explains why she feels “extremely blessed” as she looks back on her three years at the premier military academy in the United States.

Next year, Achanzar will make history at the academy in *** **** as the first Filipino woman born and raised in the Philippines to graduate from its hallowed halls.

The US Military Academy at West Point has been in existence for over two centuries but it was only in 1975 that it began admitting female cadets.

Achanzar entered West Point in June 2004—the first Filipino woman to do so.

“The top 50 from our class during our plebe year at the PMA were asked to take an initial test,” she relates in an e-mail interview. “That number was whittled down to 16, and all of us underwent interviews [with] the respective US service academies we had chosen.” (For her, it was the Army.)

Achanzar and the others took physical tests as well as the SAT and TOEFL exams. The results came out in ***** when she was in Fort Magsaysay in Laur, Nueva Ecija, for summer training.

Huge surprise

Through a rigorous process of elimination, Achanzar and Filipino-Iranian Mario Feliciano, a native of Zamboanga ****, were picked from the batch.

“It was a huge surprise for me since I am a female, and I know that it has always been a competition between males,” Achanzar says.

When she first heard that she had been accepted, she thought it was a joke. “I didn’t believe it until the command personally informed me about it,” she says.

Achanzar was initially plagued by doubts about pursuing her dream of going to West Point: “I didn’t want to be so far away from my family, losing the peers I had established at the PMA and doing the cadet basic training all over again, which would make me fall behind by 14 months. The different culture and environment to adjust to, the language barrier, and the thought that I was not the best in my class were all floating in my head at that point.”

But in the end she conquered her fears, and together with Feliciano, became part of West Point.

Lifelong dream

Joining the military had been a lifelong dream for the young woman who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in electronics and communications engineering from the University of the Immaculate Conception in Davao.

“I had always been fascinated with the bearing and principles of men in uniform. And my question has always been how I can be an instrument of God. Our parents brought us up to be service-oriented and prayerful, and the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi has always guided my decision-making,” she says.

According to Achanzar, the most difficult aspect of being at West Point is the physical distance from her family.

“Here at the academy, we are granted more leaves than when I was at PMA. However, I’m not really that excited about it since it’s almost always impossible for me to go home and spend it with my family and friends,” she says.

On her days off, Achanzar spends time with the other Filipinos at West Point—Cadet Carl Liwanag, who will graduate in May, and Feliciano, her classmate.

She talks of the “boodle fight,” a social dining activity that sees the cadets scrambling for the boodles (or food) made up of rice, pancit canton and other Filipino dishes brought by their sponsor, Nympha Leano. “The American cadets are welcome to join us,” she says.

The Filipinos’ long weekends are sometimes spent with their host families—the Laysons in Maryland or the Floreses in *** ******.

“These families have generously opened their homes to us cadets,” Achanzar says.

Achanzar, Liwanag and Feliciano regularly check up on one another through e-mail, phone calls and the occasional get-together.

Sharing notes, techniques

“We share notes and academic books, and techniques on physical development in the areas of swimming, gymnastics, indoor obstacle course tests, and the Army physical fitness test,” Achanzar says.

She jokes that her male Filipino classmates are “studs,” in the sense that they are extremely physically fit.

Among Achanzar’s most memorable times at the academy was when she saw her squad shine: “One summer, my squad successfully finished [its] basic training with zero-percent attrition rate and was awarded the best squad in our summer company for first detail. Three members were chosen Soldier of the Quarter for their class. I was very happy for them.”

Another memorable event was when she “shot” the enemy during a “raid operation” after what she describes as an “exciting” Black Hawk helicopter ride.

“My buddy left me when he needed to stop the enemy movement. I took a shot and both the ‘enemies’ went down. Their MILES gear (Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System) beeped when they got hit by my laser,” she relates.

Up until then, Achanzar had doubts about her ability to actually point and shoot. “I realized that when you are in the situation, you’ve just got to do it,” she says.

Equal opportunities

Being female and Filipino in a male-dominated academy does not faze Achanzar.

“Equal opportunities are granted and we get the same training. Admittedly, at certain points you cannot disregard the physical limitations of being female. It really takes a good amount of perseverance and more effort to catch up with the rest of your peers here, and so I have to train harder. People here are respectful and the environment is culturally diverse,” she says.

Achanzar says that as Filipinos at West Point, she and the other two cadets continue to keep the values imparted to them by their families and their alma mater.

“The PMA taught us not to complain about our difficulties but to try harder to get through that particular trial. You don’t always succeed in everything. When you fail, stand up and redeem yourself,” she says.

The thought of being the first Filipino woman to graduate from West Point in the near future continues to give Achanzar goose bumps and challenges her to do better so that she can promote the status of Filipino women and females in general.

Faith

And she has not forgotten the faith that carried her through the PMA and now West Point. As a PMA cadet, she remembers that in her low days, she simply prayed: “Lord, take charge and remove all the difficulties.”

After almost three years at West Point, Achanzar says her sentiments remain the same.

“My parents are my main prayer warriors,” she says. “If it wasn’t through their support and prayers and the trust of the people who gave me this opportunity ... I would not be here now.”

UM-Info Tech gets CHED endorsement
Published : 2007-03-31

THE Commission on Higher Education (CHED) recently granted the Computer Science and Information Technology programs of the University of Mindanao as the Center of Development (COD). The awarding ceremony was held on March 23, 2007 at Bayview Park Hotel, Manila.

Dr. Guillermo P. Torres, UM President and Novie Joy Pelobelo, program head of the UM Computer Studies, received the award. As Centers of Development, the Computer Science and Information Technology programs have affirmed to have demonstrated high standards in the areas of classroom instruction, research and extension service and manifested institutional leadership in the academic development of information technology.

Further, COD programs are given priority for CHED support funds amounting to more than P1.5 million every year. The COD status is valid until May 2010. “It is an honor that CHED has recognized UM’s computer science and IT programs and this recognition will inspire us to move extra mile to ensure that our students will receive an education that will give them competitive advantage in the IT world,” said Dr. Torres.

He also expressed gratitude to his team headed by Dr. Eugenio S. Guhao, Vice-President for Academic Affairs for all the preparations. The Computer Science and Information technology programs of UM are also granted Level I Accreditation by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation.

Do you want to know the latest craze to hit Davao ..it's airsoft war games

http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/2130/bannersocomqk5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Who said war is never fun??? That person must have never seen or joined the lastest craze in town: Airsoft War Games. Twice or thrice a week, a group of young men congregate to try to take out each other in a game that is guided by the “honesty system.”

Airsoft’s more popular cousin, Paint Ball, is much more easier to play. You get shot with an expensive ball of paint, and undeniably, you’re out. In airsoft, you get shot with tiny but painful pellet bullets and you declare yourself out of the game.

One group of airsoft enthusiasts have banded themselves into the Southern Commandos Airsoft Team (SOCOM). SOCOM is headed by its president, Anacleto “Logan” Capon. The Team is further divided into the Alpha, Bravo and Charlie Teams. Every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, these teams battle to be declared as airsoft champs.

For more information on SOCOM, how to join the team and the airsoft war games, visit SOCOM Davao’s Website.

Expert cites benefits of branding program
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

A NETHERLANDS-based organization reported that the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCCII) branding system would not only create globally competitive micro small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) but several other benefits.

The Pum, a Netherlands-based organization that provides assistance and consultancies for the development of certain areas, reported that DCCCII’s branding system program will in fact have six further benefits in terms of obtaining business permits, getting technical assistance, marketing assistance, training, free promotion during the branding communication campaign, and recruitment incentives.

PUM senior expert Cris Antonissen said DCCCII's initiative of coming up with the branding program is based on three product issues, to wit: excellence, quality, and marketability.

DCCCII branding system was introduced to be used by accredited participants from Davao City. It is a program that will support and sustain growing awareness and acceptance for Davao products in the market place.

"The creation of the system can also be adapted and applied to an overall branding and accreditation program for all Philippine products," Antonissen said adding that the accreditation system must warrant the quality standards of the participants and their products and must inspire the local businesses to support the branding program.

Corteza bags RP pool title
By Charles Raymond A. Maxey

LEE VAN Corteza of Davao City toppled "Marvelous" Marlon Manalo, 13-11, late Saturday night to rule the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines (BSCP) 2nd National Pool Championship at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Corteza, winner of the All-Japan Open last November, bagged the P500,000 champion's purse for topping the event presented by San Miguel Beer.

The Davao cue master, who hails from Mintal, earlier secured a berth in the 2007 World Pool Championship slated in Manila this November.

From an 11-11 standoff, Corteza pulled ahead after Manalo fouled in the 23rd rack, then finished off his rival with a run-out in the next frame.

Corteza, a gold medallist in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games, reached the finals after beating money game king Dennis Orcollo, 11-10, in the semifinals.

Manalo earned the right to play Corteza following his 11-5 thumping of Antonio Lining in the other semis encounter.

Mary Ann Basas, who is also from Davao, lost to fellow national team player Iris Rañola, 7-9, in the finals of the women's play, averting a double kill for Davao in the annual tournament.

Basas had made the finals after ousting Rubilen Amit in the semis, but lost her touch in the most important game. She fell 2-4 early and never recovered.

Basas and Rañola were scheduled to leave Sunday for Taiwan to play in the qualifying for the 2007 Amway Women's World Championships in Taiwan.

CD album of blind singers to raise funds for school

THE Silangan Lions Club of Davao City is launching a CD song album performed by blind students of the Davao School and Rehabilitation Center for the Visually Impaired (DSRCVI) in Bago Aplaya as a fund-raising activity for the school on April 2 at the NCCC Mall Atrium.

Entitled "Hamon sa Liwanag," the album contains original songs of lyricist Don Pagusara, a Palanca Awardee. (Don Pagusara used to be my professor at ADDU)

The songs are part of a collection of compositions featured in a musical play of the same title staged five years ago at the Davao Christian High School.

The CD production, a project of the Silangan Lions Club, is aimed at projecting the talents and cultivating the self-esteem of visually impaired children. It also aims to raise the consciousness of the public in fostering concern for and recognition of the skills and capabilities of these children.

The group intends to sell 1,000 copies of the CD for the material and spiritual needs of the students of the DSRCVI.

Luz Miao Ishiyama, president of Silangan Lions, stressed Hamon sa Liwanag "is not only a fund-generating project, but more importantly it celebrates what these special children are capable of sharing with the world in the expression of their soul through musical art."

Davao surrealist featured in landmark New York art documentary
Written by Phiilp Somozo
Sunday, 01 April 2007 12 49 45

“Surrealism isn’t dead, it’s dreaming,” this is the reaction of renowned contemporary New York artist Terrance Lindall to the assumption that surreal art died in the 1960s. “In fact,” he claims, “one of the largest and most dynamic art movements worldwide today is surreal/visionary.”

Lindall is in the best position to declare so because he organized the largest-ever international show of surrealists in October 2003. Called the “Brave Destiny,” the show gathered nearly 500 surreal artists from all over the globe. It was held at the Williamsburg Art & Historical (WAH) Center in Brooklyn, New York, USA, of which Lindall is president and executive director.
An international Grand Surrealist Ball, the first in the United States, opened the show, in the tradition of Surrealist balls put on by the Baroness de Rothschild in Europe up until the death of Dali. Many people, including European nobility, flew in from around the world for the one night event. Add on a month of incredible living installations, dance, theater, a fashion show, ballet, and film. It was described as “an extravaganza never likely to be equaled.”

Proof of Brave Destiny’s success and appropriate place in world art history is its documentary film, aptly called “Brave Destiny the Movie.” The film covers the opening reception, the ball, and a very special behind the scenes, showing how the colossal show was built. The ball footage features original musical compositions by surrealist composer Peter Dizozza. Trailer films include the ballet and the fashion show. It is set to premier, in a worldwide scale, November of this year. Visit the Brave Destiny web page at: http://www.wahcenter.net/exhibits/2003/surreal/index.html

Philippine Art is suitably represented in Brave Destiny by the artist Lindall once described as “the greastest living surrealist in the Philippines,” Bienvenido Bones Banez, Jr. of Davao City. Banez’s contribution to Brave Destiny is his multimedia work “My Warlock Dream 666,” which is presently being exhibited online in WAH Center’s website: www.wahcenter.net/exhibits/2003/surreal/BD_artists0685.html

Ben, as Banez is fondly called in Davao, has been based in the United States since 2002 when he won first place in the Asian Artist Fellowship Painting Competition of the Vermont Studio Center. He worked as art teacher for autistic children for a time in California. In 2005, he transferred to the world’s capital of Modern Art, New York City, where he took a short course at the Art Students’ League of New York. He became the toast of Philippine Surrealism when he exhibited solo at the Amarin Café, Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY, USA, from September to October 2006, with four of the world’s leading surrealists as his opening-day special guests, namely: New York Woman of the Year awardee and WAH Center founder Yuko Nii, leader of the international surrealist movement Keith Wigdor (http://www.surrealismnow.com), acclaimed surrealist author and founder of Cinema VII Peter Dizozza, and Terrance Lindall. In the March 2006 issue of the Art & Antiques Magazine, Banez’s name appeared in a list of Top Contemporary Surrealists, the only truly Asian among the cream of the crop.

Lindall is also known to have settled the dispute, of international proportions, of who truly are the surreal artists by describing an all-inclusive artistic style derived from the ideas of surrealism founder Andre Breton in his 1924 Manifesto of Surrealism. The word coined wisely by Lindall, citing philosophical reasons as basis, was “Pansurrealism.”

With Pansurrealism now lodged in the world’s largest online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, artists working in the Conceptual, Visionary, Fantastic, Symbolist, Magic Realism, the Macabre, Grotesque, the Vienna School, Neuve Invention, Outsider, Singulier Art, Characterism, and Massurealism are identified as commonly inspired by dream states and the subconscious – the important, central, sustaining foundation of Surrealism as put forth by Breton – therefore, surreal. More than that Lindall, too, cited surrealism’s dynamism in dance, theater, film, fashion, and comics!

Davao City Golf Club
Posted by hoop on September 6th, 2006 at Davao, Travel Tips
One of the problems of living in a city where everything can be reached within 15 minutes is that you eventually run out of places to entertain visiting friends, because you can practically accomplish the whole tour of the city within the span of a day.

Then I found Davao City Golf Club. That is, for my golf aficionado friends.

It is one of the oldest golf courses in Davao that is located smack dab in the heart of the city. The area comprises 9 holes worth of fairway bliss. If you want 18, then play it twice *snicker*

For the business traveller, you could squeeze in an early morning game of golf by paying P300.00. If you’re a member (P2,600 lifetime membership fee and subject to approval of committee), you just pay the P 650 monthly fee and you can whack away anytime to your hearts delight.

One downside of the course though, because of it’s compactness, is that it doesn’t have a regular driving range. They said that their unofficial driving range is hole no. 1. There you can practice your drives, they won’t allow you to do that however during peak days (especially the weekend) when there are a lot of golfers playing.

For Inquiries, Call Davao City Golf Club : (6382) - 2962290

at hindi lang yan, first in the philippines ang davao na pwede mo tawagan (1993 na feature pa yan sa abs-cbn) ang taxi to fetch you anywhere in davao from your phone or radio free of charge. after 5 years pa nagka ganyan ang manila, and i don't know kung na sustain nila till now. and we have taxis of all models back then, name it, lancers, nissans, corollas, the loaf breads, tamaraw fx, boom boom taxis and of course the kias.

guess where...

DCOTT expects brisk Holy Week

The Davao City Overland Transport Terminal (DCOTT) expects a 15 percent increase from the 15,000 passengers it served daily to varied destinations within Mindanao during the Holy Week. DCOTT chief Magno Adalin said they are conducting security check to make sure that travelers are safe while traveling. With 750 trips daily, he said, they expect more bus schedules as the DCOTT operates almost 24 hours. At 1:00 in the morning buses start to ply to different routes with the last schedule trip in the evening at past 10:00 p.m., he said.

A PEEK IN THE PARK: Kublai's Concrete Magic
By H. O. Castillo

Old timers in Davao City who may still be missing the “PTA Grounds” where they used to jog, date, or simply relax should be getting a better deal for its closure when the area finally transforms into a spectacular park. It was briefly opened for public viewing during the 70th Araw ng Dabaw. Construction resumed after the festivities.

The PTA Park’s launch date remains uncertain but it’s clear that wonderful pieces of 3D art are taking shape inside the place. A local artist called Kublai is filling up the park with amusing statues made of concrete that look like bronze materials. In contrast to the naive paint job on the artist’s vehicle, the extraordinary painting skills of Kublai manifest on his works at the PTA Park
