davaoeagle April 2nd, 2007, 09:26 AM Holy Cross leads Minda elims of Nestea Beach Volley
Published : 2007-03-31
MANILA - Holy Cross of Davao College leaned on former national training pool member Dolly Penaflorida, to rack up three straight wins in the women’s division Thursday and loomed as the team to beat in the Mindanao elimination of the 2007 Nestea Beach Volley at La Salle Greenhills. The 5-foot-9 Penaflorida, who trained for two months in Japan in 2005 for the Southeast Asian Games, teamed up with Carren Desierto for three victories that moved them closer to the Boracay national finals slated on April 19 to 21.
The Holy Cross tandem scored an 18-21, 25-13, 15-7 win over Mindanao State U Tawi-Tawi in the day’s opening match at 8 a.m. then came back at noon to beat Ateneo de Davao, 21-7, 21-9. Just two hours later, the veteran HCDC pair returned to the court to whip winless University of Mindanao Davao , 21-11, 21-12, before retreating to their designated room at the LSGH dormitory.
“We’re just hoping to do better this year. We finished fourth in the Visayas elims last year and seventh in Boracay. We’re graduating next week and we hope to go to Boracay after that,” said the winning pair. University of Mindanao Tagum starring Liezl Manatad and Mylin Que, won its first two matches, crushing Ateneo de Davao, 21-7, 21-6, before whipping UM Davao, 21-12, 21-13. Ateneo de Davao is out of it all at 0-3, just like UM Davao at 0-2. There are only five teams in the women’s side, and the top three after today’s action will go to Boracay.
In the men’s division featuring six teams, Capitol University and MSU Tawi-Tawi hurdled their opening assignments, and gained an inside track in the hunt for the three slots to Boracay. Orpheus Cubillas and Kiven Escobal of Capitol beat Ateneo de Davao, 21-9, 21-14, while Gabshar Tahiluddin and Yusop Abdulkarim of MSU Taw-Tawi stopped Tawi-Tawi Regional Agricultural College , 21-9, 21-11.
Capitol and MSU Tawi-Tawi drew byes in the morning schedule. TTRAC posted a 21-16, 21-15 win over Maharlika Institute of Technology before losing to MSU Tawi-Tawi, same as Ateneo de Davao which defeated MSU Main, 21-15, 21-23, 15-12, before losing to Capitol. To represent Luzon in Boracay where a P150,000 purse awaits the champions are Far Eastern U, Lyceum and Adamson in the women’s side, and FEU, Philippine Christian U and St. Francis in the men’s side. From the Visayas will be San Jose Recoletos, University of the Visayas and three-time champion Southwestern in the women’s division, and Foundation, Southern Philippines Foundation and San Carlos in the men’s side.

Pomelo fruit
Hala, bigla akong naadik sa pomelo. Kaka-post ko lang ng article about a pomelo farm in Davao Oriental yesterday morning tapos kinahapunan nun kainan na at ngayon naman, habang sinusulat ko to, kumakain ulit.
It’s healthy, delicious and yummy, yung kulay ng meat ng fruit is mamula mula pa at it’s so juicy. Talagang like ko itong klase ng pomelo na nabili namin ngayon, good quality. May iba kasing pomelo fruits na lasang karton, the fruit meat is dry at para kang ngumuya ng bubble gum na wala ng tamis…hehe.
Kaya whenever you visited Davao, try nyo ang pomelo ng Nenita Farms. Super saver pa sa budget kasi it’s only P50 per kilo. I saw some pomelo fruits in the mall na over P100 ang isang kilo pero di naman masarap.
Naalala ko tuloy nung pumunta ako ng Manila. When I was there, pumunta kami ni Carlo sa mall kasi gusto nyang kumain ng tropical fruits. Sabi nya, kahit anong prutas basta homegrown, miss na daw niya. So pumunta kami ng Robinsons. Halos malaglag ang panga ko sa presyo ng fruits dun. Ang presyo ng fruits is too much way over the presyo ng fruits dito sa Davao.
Dito kasi sa Davao, ang pinakamahal na kilo for example ng pinakamagandang variety ng mangga is like P60, take note ha, gumamit na ko ng word na -pinaka. Kapag season naman, makukuha mo siya around P30. It’s over a hundred in Manila.

Grapefruit grown in Davao? Yup. Here is the scoop on the first crop of Ruby Red Grapefruits grown in Davao by Nenita farms that I spotted and purchased this morning. gfruit1Grapefruits (Citrus paradisi) are related to pomelos or shaddock, therefore they logically should thrive where pomelos do well… Grapefruits thrived in the Caribbean islands and were introduced to Florida in the 1820s. They eventually caught on and became a major crop for the citrus growers in that state. These locally grown grapefruits look terrific… a very nice sheen to an unblemished greenish peel with splotches of pink and shades of yellow. One of the largest fruits in the citrus family, the grapefruit is high in vitamin C and relatively low in calories, great for those on diets. The grapefruit in this photo is part of a still life arrangement of fruits that I arranged for a photo shoot.
http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/1524/agfruit2po5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Grapefruits have a sour, sweet and bitter taste combination that is quite refreshing. It is best chilled and eaten with a specialized pointy spoon that readily scoops out the flesh or squeezed into juice. Add some sugar if you like. I used to eat grapefruits in Boston with a sprinkle of salt… This Davao specimen was very juicy and a bit tart, I’ve had sweeter. gfruit2But I am thrilled that it is locally grown, another expansion of locally available produce. Grapefruits are hardy and last 1-2 weeks in the refrigerator. If you find the taste too strong, mix it with a sweet orange or two when making juice. Also, the peel makes terrific marmalade or candied citrus peel. Candied citrus peel dipped in dark chocolate is even yummier. At P120 a kilo in the market, 3 small grapefruits cost P100 or P33 each. Still a bit pricey but it is the first time I have seen Davao grown grapefruits.

Sports Unlimited has never bonded this way before.
But Outland Adventure in Davao made us reply on one another, support one another, encourage one another, even, carry and step on each other.
If you want to put your team through an honest to goodness test of trust and togetherness, Outland Adventure in Davao is what you need to look for.
Alright Sports Unlimited, ready or not… it's time to bond!
Alright, alright. We know what you’re thinking. It's just a simple log. What's so hard about getting on it?
You are exactly right. It's not hard at all to get on this log if you’re the only one getting on it.
Try five people getting on it at one time, suddenly it ain't so simple anymore. Suddenly.. you realize the hard way, why this activity is called the "Swinging Log."
Being five on the log already makes it so difficult to keep the log from swinging. Add to that having a comedian like gene on your team and then gigglers like Gene Rose and Jackie as the other two on the log, it just makes it impossible to stay on
Remember this is all about team work and equally relying on each team member for the overall success of the team.
One member falls off the whole team looses. There's just too much laughing gong on and not enough focus from everyone That’s why we fell short of the 19-second record.
Let's try this again. Our second try was even worst than the first.
Now our bonding was turning into fighting. Alright, everyone had to calm down and realize that fighting with each other will not help us achieve our goal we needed to help each other out instead.
Let's do this one last time… and this time, let's do it for the team, 23 seconds on the Swinging Log! We did it! We beat the 19-second record and all it took was each member making a commitment to focus and wanting to succeed.
For the team!
It was one of those great surprises.
My partner Marc decides to join his first novice 4x4 competition that was also going on during the first "Davao Great Outdoor Week."
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/su2.jpg
This time my partner did not only impress the girls with his body and looks, he also impressed the guys with his 4x4 skills.
My partner Marc admits to not being the competitive type at all but when he gets behind the wheel, some strange force comes over him.
Marc's decision to join this competition was a spur of the moment thing and lots of times… it’s the spur of the moment stuff that makes your day.
Marc always has a good time when it comes to 4x4 action but it did not take him long to agree that yes...having a good time is what counts.
But being able to say, "I was the best of all," is a feeling like no other.
You know how they say, "Actions speak louder than words." Well... that applies exactly to this situation, when our team was asked to conquer this 12-foot wall with absolutely no support except each other.
The way we looked doing this challenge says it all.
Watch our actions speak about how determined we were to achieve our goal of everyone getting over the wall by hook or by crook.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/su3.jpg
The swinging log was about three feet above the ground. The wall was 12 feet high that’s why my team could afford to laugh and even crack a few jokes.
But the catwalk was a different story.
Nothing new for Marc and I we've been higher and we've jumped from a lot taller so we just enjoyed the challenge.
We just refuse to fall off we had to make it across. No ifs or buts about it.
But for Gene, who has never been this high all by himself and who's only experience of a jump was a " jumping jack," this catwalk was just a little too much too soon.
As for Jackie we could not believe how easy she made crossing the catwalk look.
Maybe she has finally gotten over her fear of heights. Then again maybe she brought her "imaginary friend" to help her out.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/su4.jpg
It was Gene Rose turn and to be honest, we were very surprised she even agreed to be part of our team let alone be on this catwalk she never thought she would find herself in this predicament.
This definitely was a tall order even for Gene Rose. Gene Rose did not make it all the way across the catwalk but just seeing her trusting completely and jumping off the catwalk was a big big step.
The catwalk was a perfect example of fear turning into fun once you conquer it
At Outland Adventure they call this activity zipwire.
We are more familiar with it being called "slide for life."
How cool is this to get to the jump off point of the zipwire you have to cross the lake on a bamboo raft and then there's a short trek through a thick forest.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/su5.jpg
Imagine how much fun your group would have doing this all together in such beautiful surroundings.
At this point of our team building experience we are now feeling a lot closer to each other and have so much more confidence in each other.
So doing the zipwire was a lot less scary and so much more enjoyable.
The cable here in Outland Adventure is longer than what we are used to about 100 meters we are told.
So we have more time to say “Weeeeeeee!”
Sliding above a lake made it feel even more like we were in a scene from "Indiana Jones.”
Excellent fun! Everybody passed this activity with "flying" colors or should I say "sliding" colors.
This body-building contest also held during the 1st Davao Great Outdoor Week was a nice treat for everyone watching, judging as well as competing Marc may know a thing or two about having a six-pack.. but with all due respect to my partner, these guys had six-packs all over their bodies.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/su6.jpg
Anyone who knows anything about working out and lifting weights will agree that win or loose, having a body good enough to even compete in this kind of a competition already has set themselves apart from the rest when it comes to discipline and dedication to fitness and health.
Admiration and Congratulations to the winners and hats off to everyone else who competed.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/su7.jpg
Big big salutes are in order for everyone who had anything to do with putting together this 1st Davao great outdoor week.
What a successful event it was and what an enjoyable time it was for everyone participating and watching over 22 activities going on at the same time all over Davao.
This will only make you conclude how diverse Davao is and how Davaoeños from the islands to the highlands, love to be outdoors.
As far as Sports Unlimited is concerned, we can say only this about the 1st Davao Great Outdoor Week: " We can't wait for the second!"
Wow! I've heard alot of Outland Adventure but don't know where it is! is it a private resort ? in Sabadabado (sunday children show) they also went to Outland Adventure ...can someone tell me where , i can't wait to check this place come holy week!

Why Davao?
DAVAO, the city of blooms from islands to highlands.
Indeed, Davao City is blooming and booming. Investments in terms of total capitalization of businesses continued to surge from only P62 billion in 2000 to P69 billion in 2001, P80 billion in 2002, P84 billion in 2003, and to P118.5 billion in 2004. The sharp growth was evident in the city's tourism, construction, agriculture, and export sectors.
Tourist arrivals based on air passenger traffic and hotel occupancy volume have been increasing since 2000. Davao City's tourism receipts as of the first semester of 2005 amounted to P5.22 billion, up 13 percent from P4.62 billion in the first half of 2004.
Also, this city has recorded an unprecedented increase in the value of private building construction, hitting P7.4 billion in 2004 from only P773 million in 2001.
So did exports, rising to $993 million in 2004 from $848 million in 2003 and $738 million in 2002, with the balance of trade further widening in Davao City's favor.
"These figures are making Davao City even more attractive to tourists, many of whom are corporate executives and entrepreneurs on vacation who can't ignore a business opportunity when they see one," said ATF 2006 secretary general Daniel Corpuz, executive director of Philippine Convention and Visitors Corp.
Davao is the capital of the Southern Mindanao region and one of the world's largest cities in terms of land area, spanning 244,000 hectares. This sprawling metropolis has emerged as the business, investment and tourism hub of Southern Philippines.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/marcokad.jpg
Citing Davao City as the next pillar of Philippine tourism, Tourism Secretary Robert Ace Durano said it was President Arroyo's personal choice as the venue for ATF 2006.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/TheApoView.jpg
The 25th ATF is expected to significantly boost Davao's economy and prop up investor confidence in the region and the rest of the Philippines.
Tourism had contributed substantially to Mindanao's expanding economy, posting growth of 4.4 percent in 2002 and 4.5 percent in 2003 and consistently accounting for about nine million of national employment.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/MandayaTwinTowers.jpg
There have been remarkable increments in the region's air and sea transport volumes, both passengers and cargo, because of increased tourism activities particularly in Southern and Northern Mindanao, which posted more than 1.2 million foreign and domestic tourists. The international airport in Southern Mindanao's tourism and investment hub recorded around 1.4 million incoming and outgoing passengers in 2004, while hotel occupancy rates posted a 6.5-percent increase in the January-June 2005 from the year-earlier level.
The impact of these developments can be felt throughout the region's economic landscape, especially in the food, transport, hotel, resort, entertainment, recreation, retailing, and services sectors.

Davao's Achievements and Awards
Most Competitive Metro City in the Philippines, 2001, 2003, 2005
The Asian Institute of Management has conducted an assessment of the leading Cities in the country using indicators such as quality of life, cost of doing business, dynamism of the local economy, infrastructure, linkages and accessibility, and quality of workforce in the years 2001, 2003, and 2005 (No survey was done in 2002 and 2004) and Davao City topped the rankings in 2001 and 2005 and placed 3rd in 2003.
Most Livable City in the Philippines
Based on annual surveys made by Asiaweek on the 40 Best Cities in Asia, Davao City has consistently made it to the Top 20 for four consecutive years (1996-1999). In the survey of livability, Davao City rated high in the following categories:
2nd in the least number of criminal cases per 10,000 at 0.8
5th in lesser vehicles per km of city road at 46 vehicles/km
6th in the ratio of house price to income at 6.18
14th in lesser volume of suspended particles in the air at 98 ?g/m³
14th in value of state education spending per capita/$ at 410.80
Davao garnered 56 points and ranked 18th. Cebu got 54 points and ranked19th while Manila was in a freefall with 49 points down at 25th.
This statistics mean that Davao City has become the Most Livable City in the Philippines. If the survey, which is independently done by Asiaweek, becomes a basis, it could be said that Davao has maintained its quality of livability as a city and is in fact improving on it.
Destination of the Year, 1997 Kalakbay Awards
1997 was supposed to be the banner year of Davao City having earned a lot of distinctions in the national arena. Aside from being chosen as the Destination of the Year by the Kalakbay Awards, tourism facilities within the city were also recognized with the highest honors in their respective categories such as Hotel of the Year for Villa Margarita and Restaurant of the Year for Annies Restaurant.
Most Child-friendly City in the Philippines, 1999, 2000
In the first ever selection of the Most Child-Friendly City in the Philippines, Davao City came out the runaway choice for the top plum owing to its local government’s programs and initiatives directly benefiting its children.
Davao City stood out because it is the first local government unit to have passed a Code specifically designed for the welfare of the children and their rights to services, Protection, and other privileges - this is the Davao City Children’s Welfare Code of 1994.
Aside from the regular social welfare programs being implemented by the City Social Services and Development Office, the local government works closely with non-government agencies that implements programs for children.
The Davao City Government also got high marks because of its implementation of the child welfare and protection programs under the Country Program for Children – UNICEF.
Most Outstanding Regional Peace and Order Council, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005
The quest for peace has become very expensive and very elusive in some isolated parts of Mindanao. However, there is one region where peace has become a price possession that its leaders never want such ideal condition slip out from their hands – the Region XI Peace and Order Council was chosen as the Most Outstanding Regional Peace and Order Council for their unrelenting efforts in maintaining peace and order in Southern Mindanao or Region XI.
Most Peaceful City in East and Southeast Asia, 1998-2005
One of the biggest come-ons of an area is an ideal peace and order condition. The dramatic decrease of crime rate in Davao City is big deal considering that it used to have a very unstable peace and order during the Marcos’ regime that ended in a bloodless revolution in February 1986.
Since then, peace and order has never been more ideal. In fact, it improves year after year thanks to a people who will not let peace slip away like a prized possession.
From a 3-digit crime rate per 10,000 people in 1985, Davao has reached an almost Utopian environment with a monthly crime volume of 0.8 cases per 10,000 persons from 1999 up to 2005. Digging through the records, it would reveal that about 90% of these cases reported are petty crimes that do not in any way threaten the over-all peace and order condition of the city.
Best Police Office in the Country, 1999-2005
Annually, the Philippine National Police conducts an evaluation of the Best Police Offices in the Country. They will be evaluated and ranked according to the ratio of policemen against the population of the area, implementation of programs for maintenance of peace and order, availability of sophisticated equipment and vehicles, the ratio of solved crimes against the total number of crimes reported and the overall safeguarding of the peace and order condition of the area.
2nd place, LGU Literacy Award in the Philippines, 1999
This award is given to local government units that seek to improve literacy within their area through programs that will ensure the establishment of learning institutions even in the most remote rural areas. Davao City ranked a close second in this competition having registered one of the highest literacy rates in the country and in Southeast Asia at 98.05%.
2nd Best City Health Office in the Philippines, 1999
Vaccines, medicines, and clinical and medical services may cost much nowadays. A local government unit should see to it that medical services are affordable if not given for free especially to rural folks and the urban poor. In this area of recognition, the local Government of Davao again ranked a close second in operating a City Health Office that delivers free and or very affordable services to its constituents aside from implementing health programs that focuses on prevention of sickness and illnesses.
The Cleanest and Greenest City in the Philippines, 1999-2005
(Highly urbanized category)
For almost a decade, Davao City ranked Second Cleanest and Greenest City in the Philippines. Visitors cannot but help notice that the city’s roads are indeed clean day and night and the parks are eternally green with trees and ornamentals. But the top plum seems slippery because of an open dumpsite located along its diversion road.
Now, the City is considered the Cleanest and Greenest in the Philippines
(For the highly urbanized category)
Most Outstanding Water Utility in Asia, 1996, 1997, 1998
(Awarded in Singapore to Davao City Water District)
This recognition was given to four water utilities in Asia, and Davao City’s water district is one of them. The Davao City Water District has through the years supplied quality potable water to residents of the city.
The need to deliver quality service is equally complemented by the natural abundance of fresh and potable water supply, which contributes to the quality of life in the City. Around 90% of the City’s water supply is taken from a more than 30 wells while the remaining 10% is treated surface water.
The Davao City Water District (DCWD) has made piped water system available to about 70% of the population. This figure may be surprisingly low for people expecting a highly urbanized city. However, a visit to the City will show that hundreds of natural wells and other natural sources of spring water abound in the City, particularly in areas near the foot of the highest peak in the country, the Mt. Apo.
Davao's Titles and Monikers
Orchid Capital of the Philippines
There are beautifully vivid reasons why Davao is called the “City in Bloom”. Aside from the presence of vast plantations and garden resorts that grow rare and exotic orchids and ornamentals, the City is specifically known among florists all over the world for its famous waling-waling, considered as one of the most beautiful orchids.
The Waling-waling or vanda sanderana grows in natural abundance in its territory, at the foot of Mt. Apo. Orchids just love to grow majestically in the City because of its typhoon-free weather. Add to that the fact that the city has more than 1,000 square kilometers of lush tropical forest (or about 47% of its total land area) that provided an environment conducive for rare plants to thrive and flourish. Another factor is the rich fertile soil of the city that can virtually make every wind-blown seed grow and bear fruit even without the benefit of human intervention. Virtually, all ingredients are present for Davao City to blossom and bloom magically like the waling-waling.
All these factors contributed to the eventual declaration of Davao City as the official “Orchid Capital of the Philippines” as declared by then President Corazon Aquino.
Fruit Basket of the Philippines- the City of Durian burg
The freshest tropical fruits are always ripe for the picking in a City called Fruit Basket of the Philippines. Whether you’ll go for the juiciest watermelon, the sweetest mango, the more succulent pomelo, rambutan, or go subtly fruit ferocious with banana, mangosteen, lanzones, strawberry, pineapple, avocado, langka, buko, or simply settle with a bowl of fresh fruit salad to end the long list, whatever fibrous or juicy fruits you have in mind, you’ll definitely have your fill in Davao City.
Orchards and fruit plantations continually make the city livable if only for its produce of the freshest fruits giving visitors a glimpse of what it would be like in the Garden of Eden with the exotic Durian (the King of the Fruits or the Fruit of the Gods) serving as the fruit of good and evil with its strong aroma (or pungent odor) overpowered by its heavenly taste which you would not want to exchange for anything. Come to the City of Durianburg and partake of the glorious delights of fruits made in the heavenly realms.
Home of the Great Bird of Asia –Soaring high in the new millennium
No one in the early 80’s would have thought that Davao, like its symbol and icon- the Philippine eagle, would soar to new heights in the new millennium.
No one ever thought too that the mighty Philippine Eagle (pithecophaga jefferyi) considered as the 2nd largest eagle in the world and threaten for extinction as early as the 70’s, would have survived the onslaught of denudation and other factors that continually threaten its natural habitat – the forest.
Thanks mainly to joint efforts of concern government and non-government organizations, captive breeding of this great bird of Asia has resulted to the birth of more than a dozen eagles (hatched in captivity) and we have welcomed the new millennium with them still lording the skies over the forest and vegetation around Mt. Apo.
The Philippine Eagle is a faithful mate. It has been observed that this bird usually prefers a monogamous lifestyle. It usually builds its nest on towering tropical trees about 80 feet above the ground (sufficient enough for it to have a good view over its territory).
Philippine Eagles breed between August and January, do aerial courtships and mate in or near their nest. The female lays one egg every two years and both parents alternately incubate the egg for about 60 days until it hatches. The eaglet fledges within 150 days and becomes independent at 18 months at which time the parents drive it out of their 60 to 100 kilometer radius territories.
With its habitat dwindling due to illegal logging, the Philippine Eagle Foundation, Inc. was organized in 1987 to implement programs such as captive breeding management, field research, community-based enterprise development, and conservation education.
Convention Center of the Philippine South
With more convention and exhibition centers being established that have complemented other excellent tourism facilities, Davao City has steadily positioned itself as the Convention Center of the Philippine South in the 21st century.
Since 1990, it has steadily become the preferred destination for conventions and conferences. This could be attributed to the ever changing and ever improving economic and tourism landscape of the city, which attracted organizers to conduct major conventions here instead of proverbial settings like Manila or Cebu.
Modern, sophisticated, and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for conventions and conferences are now readily available. This is equally complemented by the establishment of new first class hotels and mountain resorts bringing the number of hotel rooms from around 500 in 1980 to over 2,500 in 1999. Yet, the demand for more hotel rooms is projected to increase now that the City has more tourism products, services, and facilities to offer.
Gateway to the East ASEAN
Davao City, the birthplace of the East ASEAN Growth Area (or EAGA), is also your gateway to this emerging polygon of power. The EAGA was formed mainly because the areas that comprised it (Mindanao and Palawan for the Philippines, Brunei, Manado and North Sulawesi of Indonesia, and Sabah for Malaysia) used to be a trading bloc during the 12th century up to the 15th century where people enjoyed borderless economies with barter trading as the most common economic practice. Centuries of colonialism, imperialism and the establishment of governments within the chain of islands halted the exchanges.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/bimpmap.jpg
In 1994, government representatives and businessmen from these areas have gathered together in Davao City for the biggest convention ever held in the region to formally signal the birth of the newest trading bloc in Asia, the BIMP-EAGA. In the heart of this formation is Davao City, which paved the way for the re-establishment of cooperation between the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia to advance the free movement of people, goods, services, and improve cultural and economic ties within the said sub-regional trade bloc.
Through these developments, direct air and sea linkages to the islands have been established making Davao City your gateway to the East ASEAN growth area.

800 cops deployed for Holy Week rush
By Carlo P. Mallo
OVER 800 policemen will be deployed by the Davao City Police Office during the observance of the Holy Week.
Senior Superintendent Jaime H. Morente, director of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), said they are prepared for the worst-case scenario that might happen during the solemn occasion.
He added that on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, the DCPO will be highly visible in guarding the major churches in the city.
Aside from patrolling the churches and other places of worship, some of the police personnel will be deployed to control the flow of traffic.
Moreover, high police visibility would also be seen in the various tourist spots in the city. The DCPO expects the influx of tourists into the city for the long weekend.
Despite the absence of a verified terror threat to the city, Morente asserted that the DCPO has placed enough safeguards against any untoward incident.
In an earlier interview, Police Regional Office-Southern Mindanao Director Andres Caro III told Sun.Star Davao that the entire region has been placed on heightened alert until the end of the observance of the Holy Week.
Meanwhile, City Administrator Wendel Avisado said the Davao City Overland Transport Terminal (DCOTT) management is working to have all amenities ready and available to the passengers especially later in the week when the biggest bulk of passengers are expected.
Gate 7 will be opened for passengers on connecting routes for their ultimate destination as this is near the unloading area.
"So that they will not have to go to Gate 1 where passengers are really supposed to enter, Gate 7 will be open for those coming from Gensan and will pass through Davao on their way to Cagayan de Oro, for instance. However, there will be only one exit, which will be at Gate 5," Avisado said.
Canopies from Gate 1 to Gate 7 as well as from Gate 7 to the terminal building are also being completed by the management to shield the travelers from the rain or heat during baggage checking or while waiting for departure.
The DCOTT Board is also set to meet to discuss the proposed tariff rates on all kinds of baggage that will be handled by DCOTT porters.
Avisado said the base fee for all baggage is five pesos but this will increase depending on the weight of the cargo. This is to ensure that the passengers will not be taken advantage of by porters who demand high fees as well as ensure that the porters are justly compensated for their work.
The DCOTT porters and personnel will be made to wear easily-readable identification cards so that passengers will be able to identify and report to them should there be violations of any kind. (With a report from GLP)

Phaseout of old taxis on: transport agency
By Carlo P. Mallo
OLD and dilapidated taxis will no longer be given franchise to operate, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB)-Southern Mindanao administrative officer said.
Edgar Violan said the franchise of units that have been in operation for the past 13 years will no longer be renewed as LTFRB works to upgrade taxi service in the city.
Before the LTFRB will grant a franchise to a taxi operator, either renewal or new, the taxi unit will have to undergo rigid inspection.
He added that aside from upgrading the mode of service being offered by the taxi, it is also to protect the riding public from possible hazards they might incur when riding the dilapidated taxi cabs.
Violan also said the LTFRB is now conducting a gradual phase out of non-aircon taxi units. He said they are now encouraging taxi operators to introduce aircon units into their fleets.
Meanwhile, Violan warned drivers and operators against tampering their taxi meters. Penalty will be imposed against anyone caught tampering with the revocation of the taxi franchise and driver's license.

Davao not affected by most corrupt tag
By Grace L. Plata
THAT the country has been tagged as the most corrupt country in Asia does not have a negative impact on Davao City, City Administrator Wendel E. Avisado said.
Avisado said investments are expected to continue pouring in as investors are confident of the city's promising business climate.
"They are attracted by the potential of Davao, thus being part of the Philippines in relation to the corruption issue will not matter much,” Avisado said.
"We have a stable peace and order situation, an active emergency rescue unit in 911, infrastructure and alternative routes system amongst others -- All these have not escaped the notice of investors," Avisado added.
Avisado, however, warned Dabawenyos against trusting just about any prospective investor to ensure that they are not duped in the process.
He said locals have to be adept at reading agreements and trade barriers in order to ensure a return of investment. This can be made possible by investing in human resources.
"We have to strengthen our human resource especially on business know-how and negotiating skills, Avisado said.
In doing so, the city can be assured of dividends in exchange for its efforts to provide investors with what they need.

Japanese chamber to boost Mindanao's economic dev't
THE Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Mindanao, Inc. (JCCM) was formally launched in a grand ceremony at the Davao Trade and Convention Center in Davao City on Saturday.
More than 200 participants to the historic event, which included Representative Prospero C. Nograles, top government and business officials, observed that the establishment of the JCCM is a big step towards expanding not only the city's economy, but the entire island of Mindanao.
Prior to the inauguration, a special assembly was held for the selection of the JCCM officers, which was followed by a press conference.
The inauguration started with call to order and ended with adjournment by newly-elected president of the JCCM, Sumihiro Nakao. The induction of officers was also held during the inauguration, followed by a cocktail reception at the Zakoya Restaurant.
As JCCM president, Nakao said in his message during the inauguration that "the establishment of the JCCM marks an important milestone in the economic development of Mindanao."
Nakao also said the much improved political and peace and order situation in Mindanao, as well as the many positive developments between Japan and Mindanao relations, prompted them to push through with the long-delayed establishment of a Japanese Chamber here in Mindanao.
"We believe now is the best time to form the organization so that we can cooperate with other business groups to make Mindanao's economic environment more competitive and make the island an attractive investment destination for Japanese and other foreign investors," he continued.
Noriyuki Katayama, JCCM treasurer, said all the JCCM members are full of positive hopes that the organization will achieve its goals for Mindanao and its people and that the inauguration will have a great impact not just on business but in all other aspects of Japan-Mindanao relations.

Oledan: Innovative approaches
By Radzini Oledan
Slice of Life
NEW insights are revealed when we learn to listen to local folks and communities.
What started out purely as a documentation project with and for the tribal community in Paquibato turned out to be a start of a process for the community itself to engage and participate in looking back at a tradition almost lost, comparing it with new practices, reflecting on the current situation and the effect of assimilated culture in their respective lives.
It brought forth the much contested space of development, with various initiatives, including investment projects that purport to provide economic incentive to the people in the area, ensure their rightful share in the exploitation of the natural resources, and provide better life for their children.
After all, economic activities are expected to spur better access to schools and facilities and greater economic benefits for the people.
But the same activities are seen by tribal peoples as a threat to their culture, and even to their own survival. The continued assimilation of tribal communities also brings with it their silent struggle to keep their lives intact and protect their heritage and identity as a people.
There could be glimmer of hope, in the promise of development and at the same time, fear of losing touch with themselves, with their ancestral lands and indigenous practices subjected to the interpretation of outsiders in the community and of 'experts' who knows best for them.
The narratives would show that there will never be a single template that will suit the priorities, let alone the needs of indigenous communities. The effective response may be found in a coordinated "menu" of different options for protection that will allow them to assess their interest and capacitate them to choose their own direction and use of their knowledge systems.
City Planning and Development Coordinator Mario Luis J. Jacinto succinctly put it: "The insights of indigenous peoples are invaluable resource to change and improve local conditions, and most especially in the design of development projects especially in the area of environmental management and agriculture."
Sadly, young people from indigenous groups have become disinterested of their native culture, opting instead to blend with the rest of the group. Those who have the opportunity to attend school and finish a course, have shifted to other concerns, some have become mediators between other interest groups and the lumads while a very few have find their way back home to help out their own community.
Despite outside influences, tribal groups have found a way to keep their identities intact.
The lack of systematic recording of their culture has made it hard to pass on their indigenous knowledge to the young, much less allow other people outside from understanding and respecting their way of life.
Maintaining the distinct indigenous knowledge system is vital for intellectual and cultural vitality. It is their identity and hence, inseparable from their very way of life, cultural values, spiritual beliefs and customary legal systems.
What makes knowledge "traditional" is not its antiquity: much is not ancient but is a vital, dynamic part of the contemporary lives of many communities today. It is knowledge, which is developed, sustained and passed on within a traditional community and generations.
For most lumad communities, the traditional knowledge is often part of their cultural or spiritual identity. It is being created every day, and evolves as individuals and communities respond to the challenges posed by their social environment.
The challenges confronting many upland communities make it vital for legal protection to be in placed. It is not only desirable to develop a protection policy that documents and preserve the knowledge which is on the brink of disappearance but also consider how to respect and sustain the development of traditional knowledge systems.
The common thread is that protection should principally benefit the indigenous communities and seek to pass it on between generations.
However, the external social and environmental pressures, migration, the encroachment of modern lifestyles and the disruption of traditional ways of life can all weaken the traditional means of maintaining or passing knowledge on to future generations.
We are facing the real risk of losing the very language that gives the primary voice to a knowledge tradition and the spiritual world-view that sustains this tradition. Either through acculturation or diffusion, many traditional practices and associated beliefs and knowledge has been irretrievably lost.
Preserving the knowledge that is held by elders and communities can only be done if this is passed on to the younger generation. The changing lifestyles, priorities and availability of modern amenities results in diminishing dependences of the younger generation on the traditional and indigenous knowledge of their elders.
This could be another step in promoting peace and respecting cultural diversity, which is the very essence of traditional knowledge systems, precisely because they are so closely intertwined with the cultural identity of many diverse communities.
Small steps are continually taken.

Galendez rules tenpin bowling
By Charles Raymond A. Maxey
ARTHUR Galendez of the Davao Tenpin Bowlers Association (Datba) emerged champion in the 2nd Datba Araw ng Dabaw Classic Tenpin Open, which ended Sunday afternoon at the B3 lanes of NCCC Mall.
Galendez turned back the challenge of fellow Datba mainstay Vicente Te in the four-game finals, 425-358, to pocket the P30,000 champion's purse plus trophy.
Te finished second for P20,000 and a trophy, while Glenn Geluz wound up third for P10,000 and a trophy. Fourth placer was Alexis Sy.
Galendez earlier emerged on top after the 16-game elimination round after posting an average score of 206.5. He drew a bye for coming out on top, then eliminated Sy in the KO stage, 438-340.
Te earned the right to play Galendez after ousting Geluz, 369-353, in the other semis KO match.
A total of 66 players, including bowlers from Manila led by RP bowling coach Gene Tonolete, Cebu and Imus, Cavite saw action in the three-day event organized by Datba under its president Dr. Virgilio Magdale and sanctioned by the Philippine Bowling Congress (PBC).
After the tournament, Tonolete conducted a clinic among Datba members. The coach also promised to bring national team players during the Kadayawan bowling tournament in August also at B3.

Corteza to compete in big US events
By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
NEWLY-crowned BSCP National Pool champion Lee Vann Corteza of Davao City will have his hands full when he competes in a series of world-class tournaments abroad.
The 28-year-old Corteza, who bested Marlon Manalo, 13-11, in the BSCP finals Saturday night at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, bared this to Sun.Star Davao in a phone interview Monday.
"I will be in Jakarta on April 20 to 22 for the Guinness 9-Ball Open together with Ronnie Alcano, Jefrrey de Luna and another player. The tournament offers $20,000 dollars for the champion," Corteza said.
Corteza, who hails from Mintal, said he will see action in the Predator Open 9-Ball Tournament in Florida, USA by the end of May then continue his campaigns in other states there.
"Baka balik ako sa Pilipinas sa July bago ako sasabak muli sa America para sa International Challenge of Champions sa August 8 at 9 (I might come back to the country in July before going back to the States for the International Challenge of Champions set August 8 and 9)," he added.
Corteza and reigning world pool champion Alcano are the only two Filipinos invited to the eight-man Challenge of Champions where the world's finest cue artists are also entered.
"Sana nga tuloy-tuloy na ang panalo ko kung papahintulutan ng nasa Itaas. Kaya kailangan ko paring mag ensayo araw-araw para maging handa sa anumang laban (I hope my victories will go on as God permits. That's why I still need to train every day to be ready in every battle)," Corteza said.
He said not all of the P500,000 champion's purse went to him.
"Kailangan ko rin kasing bigyan ang mga sponsors ko at ang matitira itatabi ko para sa hinaharap. Alam mo naman, ang bilyar hindi panghabambuhay. Hindi rin tayo nananalo parati. Mas maigi talagang mag-ipon (I need to give to my sponsors and save what's left of it for the future of my family. Billiards is not for a lifetime and I couldn't win all the time. It's best to save)," he explained.
Corteza also won P1,000,000 in the All-Japan Open in December last year.
When asked to comment about Alcano's dismal performance in the BSCP cuefest, where Dabawenya Mary Ann Basas placed second for the P100,000 cash prize, Corteza said a player needs to be prepared emotionally, mentally and physically for the game.
"Baka naapektuhan lang talaga ng husto si Ronnie sa mga pangyayari. Nakakawala kasi ng kumpiyansa `pag may dinadalang problema habang naglalaro (Ronnie may have just have been affected with what's happening around him. It affects one's confidence when you play with a problem in mind)," Corteza said.

The many faces of Aglaonema
By Id Acaylar
LIKE fashion, plants have their season. A decade ago, orchid growing was the craze. Then it was euphorbia.
Lately, there seem to be a renewed and growing interest on Aglaonema. That is, if the widening collection of Ching Chua and Monena Satur, two distinctive horticulturists in Davao city, were an indication.
Ching's green thumb yielded award winning waling-waling in local and national competitions during the past 5 years befitting him the title, Prince of Waling-waling.
Monena, on the other hand, flooded Mindanao with euphorbia of different shapes, colors and varieties. Thus I called her the Euphorbia Queen.
Both are now heavy with different species of truly seductive aglaonemas.
Aglaonema, a name coined from two Greek words-- "aglaos" meaning bright and "nama" meaning a filament or thread referring to the striking stamens produced within the flowers, is a herbaceous, perennial, compact low-growing plant with ovate to lanceolate green or variegated leaves on short, erect stems.
It may produce arum-like flowers which are relatively inconspicuous, usually white or greenish white spathes that can give way to red berries.
It is a popular plant and a favorite among Chinese who consider it as a symbol of long life.
Hence, in the Americas it is known as Chinese Evergreen. In the Philippines, it has no common name. Yet it is endemic to our country and to the tropical swamps and rainforests in Southeast Asia.
It has been my favorite too since I took up gardening as a hobby seven summers ago. It is easy to grow. It can tolerate a wide range of light as well as neglect.
And it is relatively resistant to pests.
Aglaonema is indeed a very tolerant plant that does well in a variety of settings. It can be an effective houseplant or an ornamental in offices and shopping malls for it will survive in very poor light. It can also be used outdoors as a general purpose plant for mixed displays and under-planting.
It can be planted in dense drifts on larger sites and can provide a good color contrast to other plants. Even around swimming pools, it is suitable.
In growing aglaonema, one can start by rooting a single cutting in a pot. Once the cutting is fully rooted, the plant will sucker and begin to fill out.
Because it favors not very drained soil which can slightly withhold humidity, for planting medium I use 3 parts each of sand and pumice, two parts each of peat, and soil and 1 part of compost or organic fertilizer.
The plant thrives best in medium to high light although it can tolerate quite gloomy conditions provided it is not over-watered. And it has to be kept moist at all times during growth.
Let me share as well some other tips.
In very dry atmosphere the leaves may develop brown tips. This can be prevented however by regularly misting it with tepid water.
Draughts may cause the leaf edges to curl and go brown while direct sunlight will cause leaf scorching.
What enamored me with aglaonema is its attractive, very colorful, lush foliage. Before, when it used to grow in the wild, it was generally deep green in color. Then there were those with various markings that range from silvery white to white and cream.
Over the last 10 years, many new varieties, all hybrids, were introduced.
Those with silvery-grey to light green color mostly came from American growers who prefer the more environmentally aligned hues.
The more recent varieties that came from Thailand have more flamboyant colors like red and fuchsia and are preferred by Filipinos. The markings, coloration, shapes and sizes of their leaves and stems greatly vary. And many of these varieties are nameless.
Truly, I have difficulty identifying one variety to another. It may not be necessary for each one is distinctly beautiful. Like appreciating a work of art,
I rely on my emotion.
My only lament, we are importing all these beautiful aglaonemas.
Few years ago, according to Vicky Jimenez, another local horticulturist of note, we exported to Thailand quite a number of our indigenous black aglaonemas most of which came from Surigao. They used this as mother plant for the hybrid varieties we are now importing from them.
Again I ask, why can't we do it ourselves?

Feature: Sports broadcaster joins SCOOP-Davao board
by Romy Sabaldan
Davao City (3 April) -- THERE are only a few radio broadcasting stations in Davao City which maintains a program purely on sports.
And one of that radio station is DXAB of the broadcasting giant ABS-CBN, James Galay is the anchor of the radio program "Sports Ka Na Ba" aired from 9 o'clock AM to 10 every Sunday.
Galay was recently elected to the Board of Trustees of the Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines (SCOOP-Davao) in the annual election of officers held recently at the new Honey Bear Restaurant along Quirino Avenue, Davao City.
All previous members of the board retained their posts except Rey Sumagaysay of the mountaineering club who has been replaced by sportscaster Roy Geonzon of DXUM. Two new seats have been added to what was only a nine-seat board in the 2006 composition. The 10th and 11th members of the board are Galay and Michelle Corpuz of GMA SuperRadyo.
Scoop-Davao hopes to widen its scope of sports coverages over radio and television with the presence of Galay and Corpuz.
Officials of the group said one of the first projects this year would be a memorandum of understanding between Scoop and GMA SuperRadyo for a 30-minute to one-hour slot over the radio to revive golf event organizer Gogo Alba re-entry into sports radio broadcasting following the demise of Scoop's sports program at the PBS Radyo Ng Bayan with the retirement of Marilyn Roque.
DXUM Radyo Ukay's Bong Gonzaga will bow out of the leadership of the board as president with the Mindanao Daily Mirror's Leo Palo now holding the reins after garnering the majority votes conducted exclusively among all the eleven members of the board.
It was a totally reshuffled officers' seat with none of the officials retaining previous positions as BeeFit's Jimmy Javier taking the position of Vice-President previously held by sportsman and Ayala-exec Tommy Iñigo who is now PRO.
Michelle Corpuz was elected as Secretary, which is a position formely under Palo. Gogo Alba takes the position of Treasurer which was formerly the post held by Javier. This writer took the position of Auditor as Marilyn Roque gets the task of creating projects as Business Manager.Already Palo has announced the holding of a bigger Scoop-organized golf tournament which was a success during its first staging last February this year. The fund raising, cause-oriented sports event is due to be held after the busy election weeks of May 2007. (PIA XI) [top]

Both choices are good. Been to both and I had a blast. Kapatagan is so nippy so it's a perfect alternative for Marilog and Eden.

Meanwhile, the 63rd Squadron was still flying its missions to Davao from Owi and on the night of September 4, al about eight o'clock. Lieutenant Roland Fisher lifted the B-24D Miss Liberty off the runway. Fisher and his crew had been briefed to search for shipping south of the Philippines and in Davao Gulf, with Matina airstrip as their secondary target. By midnight they had found no shipping, and Fisher decided to attack the airstrip.
It was a very bright, moonlit night, which the 63rd crews disliked intensely, but there was no apparent opposition as Miss Liberty began her bomb run at five thou*sand feet. They were approaching the coast and the bombardier. Lieutenant How*ard Hammett, was taking control for the bomb run when the B-24 was caught per*fectly in six or seven searchlight beams. Antiaircraft fire followed, but it was fairly inaccurate. Fisher felt the plane bounce as the bombs dropped and he turned hard to the left and dived to shake off the lights. He had just rolled out of the turn and picked up speed to about one hundred and seventy-five when he saw small flashes in the shadow of his plane, straight ahead. Miss Liberty was still nailed in the searchlights but they were coming from behind, and what Fisher was looking at was a Japanese plane coming in head on, shooting.
Fisher saw '"the gun muzzles blinking and caught the outline of a plane. I started to call a warning to my crew when my senses told me that plane was going to take me head on. I reflexed and rolled the aircraft hard to the left and pulled back on the yoke. The fighter flashed by, clearly visible, and passed directly under my right engines. His right wingtip missed the lower right part of my fuselage by inches. I could see his aircraft very clearly in the bright lights and I saw his head, flying cap and goggles through the canopy as he went by. The plane was a Nick.
"I was still hollering on the intercom at the crew that we were under fighter at*tack and I rolled the plane back to horizontal and stuck the nose down hard to get some speed, I think I was hitting about two hundred and was maybe at four thou*sand feet when I heard some pop-pop sounds and there was a terrific, muffled bump and I went into an even steeper dive. I remember hearing the top turret swiveling but nobody said anything and I was trying to sort out just what was going on and read the instruments when the radar operator came on and said his radar was gone. By then we were down perhaps to two thousand feet and I remember my air speed was pretty well over two hundred and I decided to ease it back and discovered I had no pressure on my elevators. Again reflexively I snapped on my master cut-out switch on the auto pilot and began to feel for con*trol over the elevators with the elevator knob. There was a brief response, I thought, but it did not last and I was still in a sleet dive, still picking up speed. I could see the surf on the beach on the south end of Samal Island very clearly. It felt as if I was looking straight down.
"I remember then thinking 'Jesus, we are going to hit it. Should push the bail*out bell, but nobody could make it anyway. While was thinking this, I started rolling the trim tab back. The damn thing worked and we sailed out of the dive. I don't know how much altitude we had left, but I will never forget being able to see those damned waves in the moonlight, at any rate I left my power on and l got her reasonably level using the trim tab and we sailed out of Davao Gulf and took up a heading for Owi.
"We lucked out going home. Those Pratt and Whitneys ran perfectly all the way and the weather was calm. The Flight engineers assessed the damage and reported huge gaping holes, that our main elevator control cables had been cut, that we had no hydraulic pressure because of severed lines and the electrical system was erratic because of torn wires and conduit. We had three crewmen wounded, with masses of fragments of metal in their backs. From this we thought that we had been struck by a large shell causing the big holes in the bottom of the aircraft just in back of the bomb bay keel between the two waist windows, and also throwing fragments through (the sides tearing out the cables, longerons and fearing a hole in the top. Actually it was cannon fire that cut the cables on the sides and blew the top out as well as wounding the men.
"It was all hard to figure out and we were more concerned with helping the wounded men than trying to repair the cables. The engineers worked hard with pli*ers and spare wire trying to splice the cables, but whenever I put pressure on the yoke the splices would part. We decided I should continue to fly home on the trim tab and that we would try to disturb the trim of the aircraft as little as possible by all sitting still. This is why we lucked out on the weather because I'm convinced I never could have made it if we had hit turbulence.
"When we approached Owi, control told me they might request that I ditch because they had the entire day strike almost ready to line up for takeoff and they didn't want to take a chance of my crashing and blocking the runway, I reported to them that 1 did not have good elevator control and did not think I could ditch it, and we had wounded men aboard. So they agreed I could take a crack at landing. I swung the old lady down south of the island in a big gradual turn and got her headed north on a long slow final approach. We figured if we could get fluid back into the hydraulic system we would have enough to operate the brakes with maybe one shot if we cranked everything else down by hand. So we collected fluids in the customary manner of shot up bomber crews . . .grapefruit juice, coffee and water from canteens, urine and spit.
"On the approach we cranked the wheels down, but I did use hydraulic power to put down about twenty degrees of flap and lock them. I just kept on easy power and played the trim lab over the fence and made the best goddamn landing I ever made in my life. Right at the end of the strip I popped on the brakes. They lasted for a second or two and then went out so I ground looped it right in front of the palm stumps.
"Everybody was excited and kept looking at the plane. The two sides of the rear of the fuselage were intact but the top bad a hole blown just above the waist win*dows and the bottom was shredded. "Inspecting the torn condition of the bottom we found strange pieces of metal and glass sticking in it and only then realized that we had been struck by another aircraft. This was when I remembered a big orange boom I had seen off in the night and I felt satisfied that the twin engined fighter I bad seen in the search lights had attacked us from the rear, collided with us and clashed. So we reported the mission as such."
On the ground at Davao a Japanese night fighter squadron was congratulating Warrant Officer Yoshimasa Nakagawa and his observer for destroying an Ameri*can intruder. They had taken off to intercept Miss Liberty and were closing in when the cannon jammed and it seemed that the enemy bomber would escape. The Japanese pilot decided he would ram, and his propeller slashed into the bomber's fuselage. Nakagawa reported that the big American aircraft started to fall immedi*ately. His plane, its canopy smashed, kept flying. Flying glass had gashed his eye and the wind buffeting his face forced him to turn sideways in his seat, but he managed to control the battered plane. When the bomber started to level off again Nakagawa was about to repeat the attack, but the American plane reportedly fal*tered and plunged into the water. The damaged Japanese fighter landed safely back at its base.
Twenty years later Roland Fisher and Yoshimasa Nakagawa would meet, after Fisher read of the "loss" of Miss Liberty in a book about the Japanese suicide pilots.

Davao Travel | Davao City Recreation and Outdoors
As natural wonders abound around the metropolis, a lot of recreation areas and outdoor adventures spring up as a result.
Here are some of the recreation areas and outdoor adventures that you can do within the Davao Gulf region as well as some of the groups that can help you do it:
Davao Wild Water Adventure
The Davao River, which has a total length of 143 kilometers, offers a large amount of space for water-sports and other water related activities. Because of its size and length many water sport aficionados have gone to the river to engage in water sports.
Davao River is classified as Class 3+ in difficulty while farther upstream there can be found two Class 4 rapids for rafting. Several groups have already acquired permits to carry out white water rafting in the area and some of them are first class in terms of safety, training and equipment.
Rain or shine the enterprise opens all throughout the year and just needs some arrangements and reservations to coordinate the activities with the local government and other groups. The whole13-kilometer activity consists of wild water fun and adventure as well as creating a sense of environmental and ecological awareness to everyone who takes part in the adventure.
Wind and Wave Davao
Wind and Wave Davao is the foremost aqua sports facility in Davao City, as well as the rest of the region. The company started on the early 90s, then known as City Shack Davao Dive Shop, operating as a diving shop that serviced the diving aficionados in the city.
Through the passage of time, the shop expanded the services they offered to include the public’s increasing interest in other aquatic and wind sports. Today, the Wind and Wave offers Kayaking, Wind Surfing, Fishing, Boating, Jet Skiing, and Banana Boat Riding aside from scuba diving.
Wind and Wave Davao is run by a group of professional and accredited diving guides and instructors that not only guarantees the quality and the safety of your dive but also ensures that you will learn a lot about the environment and the ecology in each area you visit. And aside from the recreational activities, they also offer diving courses for those who want to learn the basics of diving with possibilities of proceeding into professionally certified advanced diving and specialty diving courses such as underwater navigation, deep diving, wreck diving, bight diving, search and recovery, and underwater photography.
Mountain Biking
The Davao area has great opportunities for two-wheeled tours. The pristine hills and white-sand beaches of Samal Island make it a popular bike destination, and a well-attended race is held here annually. From Davao City you can make day trips to the rugged foothills of Mt. Apo, the archipelago’s highest peak. There are other options for extended touring, with roads running up the coast into Davao Oriental, south to Davao del Sur, and the classic long route across the center of Mindanao, descending into Bukidnon and continuing out to the coast at Cagayan de Oro City. Davao has an active biking community; there are several well-stocked shops, bikes are available for hire.
Mountain Climbing
Far to the south, the mountains of Mindanao offer another range of trekking experiences. Begin on the slopes of Mt. Apo (2990m), the highest point in the country. This peak towers over the Davao plain, dominating the horizon for kilometers around. The most popular trail, starting in Kidapawan, North Cotabato, passes swift-flowing rivers, streaming hot springs and virgin forest before arriving at the tranquil Lake Venado. The trail to the summit is demanding, leading you through fields of boarders, jagged peaks and a large crater with unearthly sulphur pillars.

Holiday Gym campaigns for healthy living
HOLIDAY Gym and Spa embarks on a very important mission and on a grander proportion.
As managing director Gene Bangayan puts it: "This is not just another marketing gimmickry. We are affirming our dedication to a very serious matter -- the main reason why we are here, which is actually beyond business -- and that is our concern for everybody's health."
Recently, Holiday Spa was relaunched and was christened as Holiday Gym and Spa (or HGS) to strengthen the brand. Together with this undertaking is the more important concern- the unveiling of the company's commitment and latest slogan -- Holiday Gym and Spa, Campaigning for Healthy Living.
Holiday Gym and Spa is encouraging more people to choose wisely in terms of their health.
It could have chosen to give more discount-related marketing and promotional efforts to get more attention. But, the company decided to focus its energy in sincerely helping and constantly reminding members and even non-members to choose to be healthy and enjoy the benefits of such choice.
Research shows that physical inactivity can cause premature death, chronic disease and disability.
Holiday Gym and Spa encourages everybody to integrate healthy and physical activity into their every day life -- at home, at school, at work, at play and on the way that's active living!
Holiday Gym and Spa just celebrated recently healthy living with a relaunch party attended by its loyal clientele in Davao and in Cebu to show to all its excitement, and passion for its long-term commitment.

davaoeagle April 4th, 2007, 01:23 AM Avisado: Investors looking closely at DC
By Rizalene P. Acac Published : 2007-04-03
THE creation of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Mindanao, Incorporated (JCCM) is an indication that the city is slowly gaining the trust of foreign traders in terms of security and the potential to do business. City Administrator Wendel Avisado said the Japanese must have seen the efforts of the city government to create a good business environment, including curbing bureaucratic red tape and corruption.
He said the city also scored points in the areas of peace and order, infrastructure or even proper garbage collection. The creation of JCCM, he hoped, would set a precedent for the Koreans to form their own chamber here. Avisado said JCCM is mainly interested in improving the agri-business sector. Sumihiro Nakao, JCCM president, said the establishment of their chamber is not only good for the city but also to the economic development of Mindanao.
In a press statement, he said the positive development in the political and peace and order situation in the Southern part of the country is the reason of pushing through in putting up the chamber. “We believe now is the best time to form the organization so that we can cooperate with other business groups to make Mindanao’s economic environment more competitive and make the island an attractive investment destination for Japanese and other foreign investors,” he said.
Other foreign chambers which are established in the city are the Filipino-Chinese business and the American chambers. The official said while linkage with foreign businessman is necessary the local entrepreneurs should be cautious of negotiations so that they are not “shortchanged.” “We must always be observant and curious about arrangements and agreements,” he said. He also advised the businessman to improve on negotiating skills where Filipinos are weak.
During the Araw ng Dabaw celebration last month, the city government also signed a sisterhood agreement with Palau officials. The dive destination will import products from construction materials to fruits from the city.
davaoeagle April 4th, 2007, 01:30 AM Two banana chips firms to set up Tagum plants
By Carmelito Q. Francisco Published : 2007-04-03
Two banana chips companies are setting up their processing plants in the nearby Tagum City. This developed as processing plants complained of low supply of raw materials because of the entry of buyers from Manila, said Gil Dureza of the Board of Investments. Dureza said some banana chips processing plants have complained before the Department of Trade and Industry on the shortage of cardaba banana, the banana variety that is processed into banana chips.
“Because of the entry of new buyers, prices of banana have gone up. Local processing plants have found it difficult to source raw materials because they could not match the prices of these new buyers,” he said. Dureza fears that with the entry of new processing plant companies, raw materials will continue to be scarce unless new farms start producing varieties for banana chips.
One of the new entrants is Four Seasons Inc. which will invest P30 million for its processing plants in Tagum City, the main location of processing plants in the Davao Region. The other company, he said, registered with the central office of his agency and that Mr. Dureza said he was informed that it will start operation before the end of the first semester of this year.
Earlier, a company started exploring markets in Saudi Arabia and the US for its banana products that included microwaveable bananas. Aside from this product, Marañon is also pioneering the banana fries and banana turon for markets in other countries where there is a big population of Filipinos.
Ferdinand Y. Marañon, Sagrex Foods Inc. president, said he is looking for funding so that he could set up a bigger processing plant for his products as his present production is not enough for the markets he is eyeing. He said he needs $2 million for a bigger processing plant. On the sources of raw materials, Marañon said he will expand the farm of his cooperative in Davao del Sur to 1,000 hectares by next year from 200 hectares this year so that he will not face shortage in raw materials.
The government, through the Trade department, has made banana production, including by-products, as among the priority products of the region with some areas identifying banana for their one-town one-product project. About two years ago, the department intensified its promotion of the product by coming up with different varieties of banana chips in its effort to make the product attractive to school children so that it could become substitute to junk foods.
Last year, the department, through Assistant Secretary Merly Cruz, even came up with an information campaign that included a jingle for banana which was produced by homegrown talent Joey Ayala.

By Ian Ray C. Garcia Published : 2007-04-03
Last year, I had the pleasure of spending some quiet time at Eden Nature Park during the first few days of the Holy Week (since I spent the later part in Dinagat Island ). Everybody seemed to be in a solemn and reflective mood at that time. Eden Nature Park is indeed a perfect place to bathe in nature’s tranquil beauty.
With the lush natural surroundings, I was able to have some inspired moments strolling around the expansive resort while keeping my mind immersed with spiritual musings. Like in the past years, Eden Nature Park will once again indulge their guests this year with activities that encourage spiritual reflections and closer bonding of friends and family members.
Among the many traditional religious activities that they have lined up for this Season of Lent are the Last Supper Mass on Holy Thursday, Station of the Cross, Seven Last Words, Liturgy of the Word, and Veneration of the Cross on Good Friday, Easter Vigil and Service of the Light on Black Saturday and an Easter Sunday Mass on Easter Sunday at the St. Michael’s Chapel.
For those who prefer other modes of reflection other than the traditional rituals and surrounding oneself with nature, the resort’s Vista Restaurant will run a movie marathon from Holy Wednesday to Good Friday, screening various films that will reflect the meditative mood of the season.
Like in the past, Black Saturday will be a time for family bonding with various fun goings-on for the kids and the kids-at-heart. They have prepared team building activities such as balloon art and Easter card making, trivia and parlor games plus a magic show and a ceremonial bonfire. The festive mood will carry on until the celebration of the Resurrection the following day with a Noah’s Ark-inspired Easter Carnival and Fair where guests are encouraged to don their favorite animal costumes.
Aside from the Easter egg hunt, there will be an egg painting contest, a variety show and a magic show to be presented by the clowns and magicians of Bonjee Entertainment Group (the popular amusement company of my good friend and Okiddo kuya, James Infiesto and his pretty wife Skye). As for me, I am quite sure yet where to spend the later part of this week.
I might as well go to Eden Nature Park , wander inside their pine forest, and just be with nature – a solace that I can always find my little piece of heaven. Have a blessed and peaceful Holy Week everyone!

davaoeagle April 4th, 2007, 01:47 AM Davao product branding readied
To promote locally made products
By GIL M. ABARICO
DAVAO CITY — The "Proudly Davao Made Project," which was announced recently at the Club 888 media forum, seeks to upgrade the current level of appreciation for excellence and quality of locally manufactured goods by introducing a branding system for homegrown products that are of exceptional quality.
Details of the project were explained by lawyer Chris Antonissen, a consultant from Netherlands who was assigned here to assist the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCCI), in implementing the branding project.
He was accompanied by members of DCCCI’s board of trustees, Lenny Castillo and Andre Founier.
This project will be coming up with a widely-accepted and highly regarded product accreditation system. It is spearheaded by the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc., the Davao City SME Development Council, the Department of Trade and Industry-Davao City Field Office, and the city government of Davao that will endorse high-quality Davao products.
Antonissen said that through the project, the public will be made more aware of the best products of the city by simply looking for the "Proudly Davao" product excellence seal.
Strong marketing support will likewise be provided by the program to the qualified products with the help of the trade and commercial desks in Philippine embassies all over the world.
The "ultimate goal of this project is to create a strong identity and market presence for quality Davao produce and to come up with a compendium of such for easy access by both individual and institutional markets, both here and abroad," said Lenny Castillo, DCCCI board member.
Over the years, a wide array of diverse food and non-food "Proudly Davao" products have been developed by local entrepreneurs. These have emerged to be of premium quality.
The demand for these products has since then increased. This is specially true with visitors who come here for business or leisure, DCCCI trustee Andre Fournier said.
Through this project, these products will be distinguished and highlighted in order to help increase their market presence.
At the same time, other locally manufactured products will be encouraged to aspire for better quality and better recognition in the market.
The general objective of the project is "to institutionalize a local branding mechanism for Davao products that are of exceptional quality."
Initially, it was reported, the system will be pilot-tested with the banana-chip products.
The project aims to bring the Davao City SMEs to a higher level of awareness regarding product excellence through this accreditation program. Hence, the project should result in improving the general marketability of the products identified. The envisioned market expansion of the accredited products will translate to increased employment opportunities and taxes for the City.
At the same time, the accredited products will be identified as the banner products of the city, thereby instilling a sense of pride and identity in the the residents.

Never i've seen a place as diverse as Mt. Apo . From its' flora and fauna, to it's diversed landscape. form the muddy and scenic foot ,the mighty agco river and it's hot water springs , the canopied rain forests and to the huge boulders and awful smell of sulfur fumes atop the rugged peak.
come join me and explore the place we called Apo Sandawa.

what's the difference between sewerage and drainage :colgate:
btw "kwentong taxi" that Pacman is buying 200+ vios taxis in Davao .
Sewerage or sewerage system is a system of collection, containment and treatment and disposal of waste water (or gray water or effluent) from household or industrial sources.
Drainage or drainage system is a system of collection, filtration and disposal of surface or storm water from roads or carriageways. Strictly speaking, para lang talaga sya sa rain water kaya pwedeng i-dispose directly to natural bodies of water like the sea and rivers. A filtration system could be added to filter other contaminants like trash before storm water drains out to sea.

I remember my first climb- I was close to tears due to extreme coldness of the weather. Our blankets and clothings were damp due to moist that crept its way into our tents when we left it open while trying to divert the rain water out of our tent's way.
To me, that was the longest night I've ever had in my entire life-you know when you wish the sun would come out and quench the nippy air.

the battle starts here, i mean the climbing , here you encounter steep climbs up to 89degrees .
in this altitude forest trees are mostly covered w/ moss .Huge almasiga , pine , lauan tress can be found , you can see endemic plants and orchids maybe if your lucky you can find the rare waling-waling orchid ;)

We camped at Goody-goody too bro Don. That was on my second climb where we took the Kapatagan trail. I should say without being biased-this trail was so much more beautiful than the one in Lake Agko.

Solid waste, that's your garbage collection, segregation, recycling and proper disposal (incineration - pero bawal, or sanitary landfill). Only collection and disposal is not true waste management. Waste water or sewage, as earlier explained, is handled through a system. Without treatment before disposal, or without reduction from source before collection, is not your true waste management. You manage both and you have a good waste management.
dinabaw April 4th, 2007, 10:05 AM can someone tell me where is Outland Adventure la jud ko'y ideas where's where ni ?
By DYAN CASTILLEJO GARCIA
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/su.jpg

Davao has 64 new lawyers
DAVAO has at least 64 new lawyers who passed the September 2006 bar examination whose results were released by the Supreme Court last Tuesday.
A total of 49 Ateneo de Davao graduates passed the examination, followed by 13 from the University of Mindanao.
Among the Dabawenyos who passed but studied law in Manila are: Victor Nicasio "Nicky" P. Torres, a scion of the owners of the University of Mindanao, whose late father Guillermo E. Torres Sr. was also a lawyer.
Also a successful examinee is Karlo S. Bello, who is running for councilor in Davao City's Third District. Karlo, also known as "Kaloy," is the son of former Justice secretary Silvestre H. Bello III, and grandson of former city mayor and local government secretary Luis T. Santos.
Ateneo de Davao, the country's fourth-ranked law school, registered a passing percentage of 82.35 percent for its fresh graduates and 79.03 percent overall in the examinations. The national passing percentage is 30.59 percent, which is one of the highest passing rates in the history of the bar examinations.

Arroyo okays Damosa land as info-technology park
By Antonio M. Ajero
PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has proclaimed a portion of the Damosa (Davao Motor Sales) land, headquarters of Anflo Group of Companies, in Lanang, Davao City as an information technology (IT) park -- the first ever in the city.
The information about the presidential proclamation creating the IT park was relayed to Don Antonio O. Floirendo, chairman of the board of Damosa Land Inc., by Lilia B. De Lima, director general of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza), in a letter dated February 14.
De Lima said the facility is covered by Arroyo's Presidential Proclamation No. 1231 "creating and designating certain parcel of land located at J. P. Laurel Avenue corner Angliongto Street, Lanang, Davao City, as an IT park pursuant to Republic Act No. 7916 as amended by Republic Act 8748."
In the same letter, De Lima assured Floirendo of Peza's "full support in the successful operation of your IT Park."
De Lima enjoined Damosa Land to maintain competitive rental rates for all prospective IT locator enterprises.
She said, "we wish to underscore that your cooperation is critical in our effort to make doing business in the country as easy as possible and attract more foreign investments in the IT industry."
The registration agreement between Damosa Land and Peza was signed last March 28 by De Lima and Ricardo "Ricky" R. Floirendo, senior vice president of Damosa Land and SVP-South Operations of Anflo Investment and Management Corporation.

Davao's Santos gains finals
By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
EL SANTOS Santos, Eloisa Collo, Andrei Dizon and Juan Paolo Cansino booted out separate foes to reach the finals in the 2007 Head Junior Tennis Satellite Circuit at the Ecoland Phase 4 courts Wednesday.
Davao City's Santos, who won a gold medal in the BIMP Eaga Friendship Games in Indonesia last year, lived up to his billing by beating archrival Gerard Pinili of Cotabato City, 10-4, in the boys 18-under semi-finals.
Head-sponsored netter Santos, thus, scored his ninth victory over Pinili in their past 11 meetings.
Digos City bet Eloisa Collo arranged a titular clash with Kristina Mae Colmenares after disposing of second-seed Camille Zapatos, 10-6, in the girls 16-under.
Colmenares edged Cindy Gerapusco, 10-9, in the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta)-sanctioned event presented by the Dynamic Sports Corporation and sponsored by Chris Sports, Gamma, Toalson, Sulpicio Lines and Accel.
But No. 1 Gerapusco stayed alive in girls 14-under by crushing Lenelyn Milo, 10-1. Gerapusco will take on No. 2 Zapatos for the championship. The latter nipped Colmenares, 10-9.
Ateneo de Davao High School's Dizon toyed with Princeton Gerapusco, 10-1, to collide with Ernesto Pantua of General Santos for the boys 16-under title. Pantua eliminated Andre Banate, 10-4.
Cansino survived Rogelio Estanio, 10-9, to play against Banate, 10-2 winner over Aldwin Libaton, in the boys 14-under finals.
In the girls 12-under, Aratxa Callejo breezed through the title round with a default win over Joeylyn Accion.
Joel Cantilla and Jeleardo Amazona will slug it out in the 10-under unisex finals. They demolished Jan Paolo Javier, 10-4, and Kurt Gerapusco, 10-1, respectively.
Finals matches were ongoing as of Wednesday.
The next leg will be in General Santos next week.

Floirendo, senior vice president of Damosa Land and SVP-South Operations of Anflo Investment and Management Corporation.
at long last after wasted opportunities of investments and their draining of davao manpower:ohno: but it is still better than nothing:D

KulasKusgan April 5th, 2007, 01:40 PM Council gets 2nd place award from DILG
By Ulysses E. Israel
THE City Council of Zamboanga City landed second place in the recently concluded 2006 Local Legislative Award of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).
It bested other contenders in the Highly Urbanized City (HUC) category nationwide.
The Local Legislative Award is an annual award being initiated by the DILG in coordination with the Philippine Councilors' League (PCL) that bestows honors on legislative bodies based on their accomplishments during the period of one year.
In the regional level, the City Council-Zamboanga City ranked first in the HUC category.
Vice Mayor Beng Climaco acknowledged the contribution of the city councilors who steadfastly made the city legislative body's achievements worthy and deserving of the award.
"We offer the award to the people of Zamboanga as they have served as our inspiration in every legislative initiative, we, lawmakers put forward," she said.
She said: "It is indeed a great honor for Zamboanga City to be chosen as the Second Best local legislative body besting other outstanding legislative bodies throughout the country."
Climaco led the City Council in bringing honor to the city by passing 109 ordinances and over 2,000 resolutions since the start of its term on July 1, 2004.
She said these ordinances and legislative measures were based on carefully researched initiatives originating from genuine concern to uplift the well-being of the people of Zamboanga and addressing as well as the needs of various sectors.
Among the important legislations crafted by the City Council were the Zoning Law, the Children's Welfare Code, the law creating the multi-sectoral AIDS Council, the ordinance establishing public cemeteries in the different districts of Zamboanga, the Executive Budget for 2005, 2006 and 2007, the City government Plantilla Ordinance and many others.
"We will continue with our work despite of our campaign and this award gives honor and pride to the city. We thank the DILG and the PCL for recognizing our efforts. It is however the people who are the best judge of our work," she said.
Councilor Rudy Lim received the award during the awarding ceremony held in Cebu City.
Cebu City got the First Place while Zamboanga city placed second. Other awardees were: Naga, third place; Baguio, fourth; General Santos, sixth; Mandaluyong, seventh; Lucena, eight; Dagupan, ninth; Davao, tenth; Butuan, eleventh; and Iligan, twelfth.

most important ordinances were already passed in davao in the 90s and early 2000. mejo nagulat lang kasi ngayon lang nagawan ng ordinances sa ibang cities like women code, children's code, aids, zoning, investment incentive code, etc... other ordinances already passed/implemented are water code, anti-smoking, firecracker ban, solid waste mgt, aerial spraying ban, etc. and coming up... shelter code.

KulasKusgan April 5th, 2007, 03:18 PM EAGA Games: opening lines for easier reg'l cooperation
Written by Walter I. Balane / MindaNews
Thursday, 05 April 2007 10 59 33
DAVAO CITY - Sports through friendship games in the BIMP- East ASEAN Growth Area is opening links for easier economic cooperation in the region, Leon Montemayor, BIMP EAGA Sports Council chair said.
Montemayor said that with limited resources, the sports councils from the four-nation sub-regional economic grouping, pursues friendship games to help build confidence among young people, bridge cultural differences, and hasten the inflow of economic and tourism cooperation.
He told MindaNews Sunday that sports events promote friendship and understanding, which could precede or go side by side with more serious talks for consolidation.
Montemayor presided over the Ministerial Sports Meeting of the BIMP-EAGA Sports Council, which is composed of the heads of the various sports councils of the four-member countries in the growth area.
The group decided to hold the next BIMP EAGA Friendship Games, a biennial event, in Brunei next year.
He said the sports council is looking at a proposal of the Brunei government for a youth exchange study program among the member countries as an initiative to forget closer ties, apart from the Games.
The BIMP-EAGA Friendship Games was conceived in 1995 as a venue for sports development, as well as educational and cultural exchange among athletes from the four countries.
Since it promotes friendship, Montemayor said the event featuers mostly non-contact sports like swimming, athletics, sepak takraw and lawn tennis. Montemayor said, however, they have included traditional Malay martial arts, pencak silat.
He said the choice of events depends on the limited budget available for the athletes' transportation and hosting needs.
Montemayor said apart from fellowship and inter-cultural understanding, the Friendship Games has also become a stepping stone for athletes from EAGA's focus areas. He said since competing in the games, many of the players now also compete in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and even in the Asiad.
He said the games have provided opportunity for the athletes in EAGA's less exposed focus areas to compete with athletes from other countries.
Bukidnon-based runner Crifrankreadil Indapan, 21, who won the premier 10-kilometer run at the First BIMP EAGA Marathon on April 1 here, said he valued the experience to be with other athletes. He said he did not only compete, but also befriended some of 12 foreign athletes who joined the event. "It gave me a chance to know the culture of these countries," he said.
Montemayor admitted that though they do not have closely coordinated activities with the economic and tourism players in the region. But he said BIMP sports are part of the overall goals for regional cooperation.
Susannah Liaw, permanent Secretary of Sabah, Malaysia's Ministry of Youth and Sports and chair of the Sabah Sports Council, said sports tourism around the region could be an offshoot of the games.
But she said sports development in the region is still at an infancy stage following an interruption brought by the Asian financial crisis in 1997.
She said through sports, regional cooperation takes a new pace as it gives more reason to come together. "With the friendship games, we strengthen similarities and celebrate differences," she said.
Montemayor said when different peoples build friendships through sports and promote understanding; it is easier to gain trust and confidence and establish business ties.
But he said problems with funding hounded the games so they try to make early preparations so participating local governments, who foot most of the athletes' bills, can prepare.
The BIMP-EAGA includes Brunei Darussalam (whole area), Indonesia (the provinces of North Sulawesi, East Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, Maluku, Irian Jaya, South and Central Kalimantan, Southeast and Central Sulawesi, Southeast and South Sulawesi), Malaysia (Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan), and Philippines (Mindanao and Palawan).
Davao City hosted the BIMP EAGA Sports Council meeting last week with the First BIMP EAGA Marathon as a sideline event. The marathon event will become permanent and will be held a year before the Friendship Games. (Walter I. Balane/MindaNews)

davaoeagle April 5th, 2007, 10:28 PM GMA-7 allots P170M for regional expansion
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña
The Philippine Star 04/05/2007
Broadcasting firm GMA Network Inc. is spending P170 million for a regional expansion program aimed at dominating TV and radio ratings in all parts of the country.
In a statement, GMA said it is now focusing on its regional expansion program to improve its signal and program distribution capabilities in key cities across the country. Funding will come from internally-generated cash.
New transmitter facilities are now being installed in Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro, Gen. Santos City, Naga City, Batangas and Legaspi City.
The relay system in Cagayan de Oro is set to open on April 10 in time for the telecast of the Pacquiao-Solis boxing match scheduled on April 15.
GMA also said its transmitter facility in Sto. Tomas, Benguet, which services La Union, Pangasinan, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija and Pampanga, was completed last January. The new transmitter facility in Naga is set to be completed by July.
Aside from this, the network is upgrading its tower and antenna system in Legaspi, which is seen to improve GMA’s coverage and reach in the viewer -rich Bicol Region.
GMA is also building a studio complex in Davao and Dagupan which are expected to be completed in October. "With these regional expansion projects already in progress, every household in the country, including those in remote areas can now look forward to a more enjoyable viewing experience of their favorite Kapuso programs. With our programs now more accessible, we expect the regional ratings to increase significantly," said GMA executive vice-president and chief operating officer Gilberto R. Duavit Jr.
Aside from this, GMA is building two state-of-the-art studios within its compound in Quezon City. The new studio complex, which will house the most modern studio equipment and facilities, costs around P1 billion.

fundraiser April 6th, 2007, 04:06 AM ive read that article, its DIA, and the other one is not tagbilaran but for the construction of an airport in panglao, still in bohol.
this is due to the payment by the philippine airlines (PAL) of back dues amounting to P2.9 billion.
the court of appeals approved last week a compromise agreement between the manila international airport authority (miaa) and pal that settled almost 11 years worth of unpaid aeronautical fees to miaa with pal.
these fresh funds are sourced internally and without foreign borrowings.
but with the central government in manila, their arrangement of payment is 34.9 million monthly starting this month for 7 years
BUT would it be possible to develop an entirely new airport in panglao while expanding another airport, the DIA, knowing that the monthly available fund is only 34.9million ?

AIR TRAVEL TO GET BIG BOOST IN RP
by: Tarra Quismundo and Leila Salaverria
Airport authorities are looking at a new international airport on Panglao Isalnd in Bohol, and the expansion of Davao International Airport now that the payment by Philippine Airlines (PAL) of back dues of P2.9 billion has been approved by the courts.
The Court of Appeals approved last week a compromise agreement between the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) and PAL that settled almost 11 years worth of unpaid aeronautical fees to Miaa with PAL making monthly payments of P34.9 million over a period of seven years, starting this month.
With the fresh funds, a new airport to boost tourism in Bohol's marine sanctuary may be up by 2008, said Miaa general manager Alfonso Cusi.
"And it will be built without foreign borrowing," Cusi told the Inquirer.
President Macapagal-Arroyo recently revealed that the Saudi Arabian Royal family will invest in resort development in Bohol, a center for marine biodiversity and home to famed Chocolate Hillls.
An executive order mandates that priority be given this year to air terminal development projects in Bohol and Davao, Cusi said.
The Manila Domestic Airport, meanwhile, is rushing plans to expand the old terminal this summer to improve service to passengers flying to island destinations.
The Ninoy Aquino International Airport will also undergo expansion to accomodate the annual rise in passengers even as it awaits the opening of the controversial NAIA Terminal 3.
The windfall from PAL came after Miaa demanded payment of landing, take-off, parking and other fees just like any other airline after the flag carrier was privatized.
PAL contested Miaa's claim, saying its tax exemptions could only be abrogated when its franchise that listed its tax incentives had been explicitly repealed.
