West End Walk
Went for a walk into West End via the CBD. Thought I’d take a few pictures – enjoy.

Little Larder – great for breakfast and on my street.

Apartment buildings on my street.

Crane up the street – apartments under construction.

Interesting way to get to your home – your own funicular railway from your house to your garage.

LOL – stencilled graffiti, there is a lot of interesting graffiti in Brisbane’s inner suburbs.

Staffan’s Skyneedle – an old leftover from Expo 88. It has a light beam that sweeps around the city occasionally and can be seen from 70km away.
http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/3427/picture0485rj.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Punjabi Palace – now we are getting into West End restaurant precinct, oh and notice the development everywhere.

More weird art – this one lights up and shoots steam:P
http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/9862/picture0519kn.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

And now we are into West End. Probably my favourite Brisbane Suburb. Its very multicultural, very funky, very happening and compared to other suburbs is very real. In West End anything goes – similar to Newtown in Sydney though sometimes it feels more like Nimbin.

Decided to take the low road back – below the cliffs and along the Floating Riverwalk. Most is self explanatory, the homes and building on the cliffs and above the river are ones I passed earlier along the street.

The cliffs are pretty cool, like someone said a Natural beauty that is underrated in Brisbane. I wanna try and get an apartment in your area, looks amazing and tempting.

Great tour. I have never really seen the Brisbane skyline or riverside properly. Been there twice but night both times and awhile ago. I wouldn't be surprised if it has the best skyline in Australia one day, not too mention many suburban high-rise like Sydney.

Great photos JayT. I quite liked the area just north of Storey Bridge (up on the cliffs) when I was up there a few years ago. It has the same sort of feel and look as Neutral Bay and parts of Kirribilli in Sydney, near the water, albeit with more people about. Nice.

I can assure you there is nothing natural about them. All those cliffs along the Brisbane River were man made, with early settlers using them as a quarry. Some of Brisbane's earliest buildings including the Commissariat Store were built with stone from these quarries. If you ever get a chance to see an early pic of Kangaroo Point you will notice that a steep bank of green goes all the way to the water.

Still, they do make great scenery today and we can still pass them off as natural...

Nice pictures. In Melbourne, it has rained more than 20 times today. It has been sunny almost as many times. And it is FREEZING cold! Nice to thaw out with a tour of Brisbane :)

I really like this building, with its amusing columns! hehe

This building was very controversially received, challenging a lot of the more alternative local residents. I remember that there was even graffitti sprayed around the suburb which questioned the abilities of the architect. But it wasnt worded so nicely as I have written it. One of the brief moments when the brisbane public has really voiced opinion on architecture. Its become somewhat of a local landmark now. A landmark either loathed, liked or loved.

I can tell everyone though that there is a malaysian restaurant there called 'Makan House' that makes a great Nasi Lemak.

CarolBrissy

This building is cool, controversy is a good thing as far as a landmark is concerned, at least people remember it! The worst thing about a landmark is people can't even recall what it is like.

I like the makan house too, their rice dishes seem to be better than the noodle dishes.
