View Full Version : Victoria Harbour
_00_deathscar August 25th, 2005, 06:00 PM Just took the ferry across from Central to TST the other day...and it just doesn't feel the same with all the reclamation works going on.
The harbour needs to be preserved - and not by filling it up with cement!
I believe an appeal against the further reclamation of the harbour failed late last year?
Save the world's most beautiful harbour!
shibuya_suki August 26th, 2005, 08:10 AM a problem for long terms is hongkong need a new space for future development, such as new CBD,but recalmation is not the only way to solve it
khangu August 26th, 2005, 08:42 AM There was a great article in Time magazine some months ago documenting this issue. I think they called it 'How to loose a harbour', and showed the various stage of land reclamation since the Bristish took over Hong Kong.
It was amazing to see how the harbour had shrunk over the past century.
The main reason they said for the reclamation was not because of the need for land, but the need for money.
The government of HK was never big on the taxation of the people nor the companies that operate in HK, so the main way they were able to raise money was to reclaim the land, and sell that off to developers for huge amount of money. It became such a lucrative method of raising money, they kept reclaiming, and now it's becoming a canal.
Syd-Hk August 26th, 2005, 01:58 PM anyone got a map of all reclamed areas?
they're doing some at wan chai for the new highway, more habour gone.

hkskyline August 26th, 2005, 05:51 PM The Central Phase III reclamation is not going to developed into a skyscraper district. Rather, an underground highway will be toppled over with a waterfront promenade. So this reclamation, unlike other previous ones, will not have a big property sale to go along with it.

Skyscrapercitizen August 27th, 2005, 05:25 PM Yeah they should stop it, let this be the last one. Onterwise in 2030 the harour would be nothing more then some sort of river...

They will eventually sell it, maybe not now, but they will sell it.
The only way to stop developers from taking over the site, is not to have the reclamation.
hkskyline August 31st, 2005, 06:02 AM It is physically not possible to actually build skyscrapers on the site when there is a major highway buried underground. You can't lay a foundation around that highway, so the chances of any developer trying to force its way into a deal are remote.
Syd-Hk September 2nd, 2005, 06:56 AM or the highway needs to be dug really deep undergroud, which is expensive.
superchan7 September 2nd, 2005, 08:34 AM Considering how short an Admiralty/Wanchai bypass would be, it would never go too far underground.

I don't think that's what's going to happen. I've seen a different plan. BTW, does that mean its only 900 METRES between HK Island and Kowloon?

For the map above, what's that purple dotted line mean? Is that like the maximum extent reclamation can go for in Central or what? Also, they're not going to reclaim it to the Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Centre because there's that gap...
hkskyline September 3rd, 2005, 02:37 AM The purple line will not be the ultimate reclamation end point. Rather, it should be the construction zone where workers can move around for the present reclamation work.

No, the recclamation area will ONLY be the area in GREEN which is outlined by the RED line. Even though I am against recclamation, but the Central Phase III recclamation is needed because of travelling times. If you know people who live in the western district of Hong Kong Island, then you will know. Also, the government said that on top of the recclamation, they will build a waterfront promenade where people can have a nice place to enjoy the views of the harbour rather than having roads and helicopter pads which are located right by the water.

Okay... so this plan is NOT the one begin used?
Also, they're not reclaiming west of the convention centre anymore (like in Causeway Bay or anything)?
What's also happening to the old Kai Tak airport site/ runway and in Kowloon Bay?
Aboveday September 3rd, 2005, 06:16 PM They will reclaim the west of the convention centre in order to build that underground highway, but the plan is belong to Wan Chai Recclamation Phase II and the plan is under review.the pic I post is the stale proposal as I stated in my last post..
