The Sri Lanka Geological Information Technology Association has taken preliminary steps to launch the first satellite in Sri Lanka, Association President Dr.Ranjith Premalal de Silva, Senior Lecturer of Peradeniya University said.
Dr. de Silva said this was a sequel to his recent foreign tour to formulate a strategy to shoot a space satellite useful to collect data relating to disaster management and other issues, the proposals will be deliberated at a conference at the Peradeniya University Post Graduate Institute Auditorium today.
The project envisages the employment of local expertise and resources, as a priority. The Ministry of Science and Technology will handle the basic maintenance and supervision of the project.
The theme of the second Convention of the Association for today is "Geological Information Technology for the future of Sri Lanka".
A special seminar and workshop pertaining to the Satellite Information Technology will be held in December. The Association intends to confer the award 2005 to the Best Research Report, that will be tabled at today's deliberations, Dr. de Silva said.
