Selfridges - the coolest building in the world? Mar 11 2005 By Staff Reporter, Birmingham Post http://images.icnetwork.co.uk/upl/icbirmingham/mar2005/3/0/000BD86B-7B09-1231-BA7D80BFB6FA0000.jpg Birmingham's iconic Selfridges store is one of the coolest buildings in the world. That's the verdict of best-selling fashion magazine FHM's Collections which has compiled a list of the ten coolest buildings in the world. Four of them are in Britain and include the Bullring's flagship department store which has revitalised the image of the city across the world. The magazine's commissioning editor, Paolo Righetti, said: "We are fascinated by great design and thought it would be good to combine our love of fashion with our love of good architecture so we got a panel of architects together and thrashed it out until we came up with this final list. "Selfridges, the glittering superstore, which is a famed shopping haunt for many celebrities, adds a glowing focal point to Birmingham. The building got into the top ten because of its sheer impact." Wikipedia The Atomium is a monument built for Expo '58, the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. Designed by André Waterkeyn, it is 103-metre (335-feet) tall, with nine steel spheres connected so that the whole forms the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. Tubes which connect the spheres along the 12 edges of the cube and all eight vertices to the centre enclose escalators connecting the spheres which contain exhibit halls and other public spaces. The top sphere provides a panoramic view of Brussels. The new city is based on a system of connected islands created by overflowing a very large plantation of oil palms. The Public Administration buildings are in the centre of the islands, the residential units face the water. The main residential complex is conceived like a fleet of majestic Sail-Boats floating in the lagoon. The rib-like structural system forms the outer skin of the Sail-Boats and gives an important contribution to shadow the inner spaces of the various apartments without interfering with the view of the artificially created lagoon. All the apartments face the opposite sides of the Sail-Buildings as to create bilateral ventilation, with positive bioclimatic effects http://www.worldarchitecturenews.com/news_images/1902_4_Putrajaya4.jpg http://www.worldarchitecturenews.com/news_images/1902_2_Putrajaya2.jpg http://www.worldarchitecturenews.com/news_images/1902_3_Putrajaya3.jpg http://www.worldarchitecturenews.com/news_images/1902_1_Putrajaya1.jpg http://img37.picoodle.com/img/img37/3/11/23/f_03m_43e5425.jpg World 2 World July 8th, 2009, 09:39 AM Point 92, PJ, Malaysia http://www.picamatic.com/show/2009/07/03/09/08/4294585_320x320.JPG http://www.picamatic.com/show/2009/07/06/03/05/4322192_442x244.JPG http://www.picamatic.com/show/2009/07/06/03/03/4322172_444x244.JPG http://www.picamatic.com/show/2009/07/06/03/03/4322167_443x245.JPG website: http://www.pjtradecentre.com/point92/concept-01.html Amrafel July 8th, 2009, 12:08 PM guys, try to beat this beauty  http://www.hotelspirit.sk/data/files/45.jpg Hotel Spirit, Bratislava skyscraper100 July 8th, 2009, 02:24 PM ^^ XD colorful junks lol gazzab1990 July 8th, 2009, 03:22 PM The Gateway Arch, St. Louis, USA:- http://aboutabride.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/st-louis-arch-address.jpg The Barbican Centre, London, UK:- http://hammersmithfulham.com/city-of-london.org/images/eventlist/venues/barbican460_1243335981.jpg Lloyds, London, UK:- http://www.highlimitaccidentlifeinsurance.com/images/lloyds_of_london_night1-01.jpg Guggenheim Museum, NYC, USA:- http://www.ou.edu/class/arch4443/50%27s%20Minimalism/Guggenheim.jpg Eden Project, Cornwall, UK:- http://www.stpearceaccountants.co.uk/eden-project.jpg Mr. Orange July 10th, 2009, 01:23 AM Here are a few of my votes for "coolest" building. These will all be in the "Built" category. I'll post "unbuilt" later. Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision Architect: Neuteling Riedjik Amsterdam I went there last summer. Well worth the trip. The glasswork of color and texture on the outside is amazing. http://urbalis.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/26vision600span.jpg http://urbalis.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/institute_for_sound_and_vision_hilversum_neutelings_riedijk_01-736633.jpg http://www.eikongraphia.com/wordpress/wp-content/Instituut%20voor%20Beeld%20en%20Geluid%20203%20small.jpg Sudwestmetall Architect: Allmann Sattler Wappner http://www.allmannsattlerwappner.de/_data/projekte/img/zoom/swm_001_klein.jpg http://wwx.baunetz.de/sixcms_4/sixcms_upload/media/2568/allmann_arb10.jpg Museum Bregenz Architect: Peter Zumthor Looks simple, but the section is complex. http://kienviet.net/upload/2009/04/zumthor_pritzker_prize_05x.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2278/2498171315_cb269a4981.jpg Glass Cube Architect: 3deluxe http://www.dezeen.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/squ-leo_pr_er04_rgb_4163.jpg http://thomasmayerarchive.de/images/1441/110AT20071105D0048/jpg/Architecture,glass-cube-LEONARDO,glass-cube-LEONARDO.jpg Porche Museum - Stuttgart Architect: Delugan Meissl http://www.spiegel.de/img/0,1020,1410472,00.jpg http://rickgundzik.com/wp-content/images/2009_porsche-museum_01_001.jpg Cooper Union Architect: Morphosis http://www.peruarki.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/cooper_union_morphosis_peruarki_portada.jpg http://www.core.form-ula.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/28483391.jpg UrbanO! July 10th, 2009, 01:36 AM ^^ The glass cube and museum bregenz are so damn beautiful. The others, mmm... NO. Mr. Orange July 10th, 2009, 01:55 AM ^^ The glass cube and museum bregenz are so damn beautiful. The others, mmm... NO. Well... The thread is "coolest," not "most beautiful." I don't think the photos of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision do it justice. The light as it plays on and through the surface is amazing. I couldn't figure out how to load any of my personal images from my computer, so I had to rely on ones I found on the web. If you like the Museum Bregenz (which is definitely one of my all time top ten), then I think you would like NISV. Cooper Union is not beautiful per se, but I think it is cool. Sudwestmetall has interesting tactility at its base, and the light through that screen is really dynamic. You can probably tell from my choices that I'm into light-altering surfaces. I prefer buidlings that can be gently integrated in the city without looking a virus in it. That's something you could say about any modern, 'cool' building in an old, historic town. Anyway, the enviroment of the Liège-Guillemins trainstation wil have a complete reconversion in the future. Lindemann July 20th, 2009, 03:23 PM One of my favs... not a well-known building to many.
