DOHA: The boom in construction of new high-rise buildings in the plush, seafront, Dafna district of Doha, has caused immense parking problems for both, visitors and employees of companies located there.

At most locations in Dafna, all high-rise buildings flank one-another, leaving little parking space for employees and visitors. In some places, construction sites where new towers were being built, deny any parking space to vehicle owners. Such sites have construction equipment generate dust, which motorists prefer to avoid. Though the area will be the new face of Doha's central business district within the next few years, frequent visitors and those working there say, parking facilities near these towers need to be improved drastically.

Jassem Mohammad, an employee of a government organization with offices in Dafna said, he was forced to leave his vehicle at the parking lot of the City Center and trudge all the way to his office, even in the hot and humid climate typical during the summer morning. He pointed out, the high-rise building where he works is flanked on all sides by construction sites, leaving no space for employees such as him any place to leave their cars. He also blamed the owners of such towers for not ensuring that each building had its own and adequate parking facilities. The parking lots of these buildings, he said, were designed to cater to only 40 per cent of the actual requirement. Jassem noted, the Dafna area was home to some of the most important government offices which received hundreds of visitors daily and hence, better parking facilities should be provided.

Another daily visitor to the area, Mohsen Bayune said, since his office was shifted to Dafna some eight months ago, he was having severe problems daily in finding a suitable place to park his car. His colleagues too were fed up with this situation they have to face every morning before reporting to work. Aiya Rashman, also an employee who works at a tower in Dafna said, a proper parking solution was required for the area till all the construction activity ended. She said, there appeared to be no coordination between the builders of the various high-rise buildings on the work schedule, which had caused the mess.

A majority of visitors to the area believe, parking problems in the Dafna area are here to stay and would not end even after the construction work is finished. They said, the parking lots of these high-rise buildings were so small, they could take only a limited number of cars. Each slot therefore was usually reserved for the top boss of a department or a company and employees had nowhere to park. Visitors were even worse off since they have to drive around the area for several minutes, since they do not know the internal roads, to find a parking spot.

Tell me about it !! The only good from this situation is that it motivates employees to come half an hour early to work, like me. Even though i may find a spot, but finding one in the shade is impossible.
