View Full Version : Why all this comparisons
Iwano August 30th, 2005, 01:43 AM hey guys, what is the reason for the never ending, repeating, annoying structure of 80% of the threads opened here?
The only themes are: which city is the biggest, tallest, richest, most populatet etc
And then all this rankings and combats and weird stuff like this.
We are talking about city´s, buildings, places to life and for identity, culture, flair, purpose.
What is the matter of rankings? We should talk about several interesting features of cities, architecture, urban developments and try to learn more about towns we don´t know yet. And perhaps to put things next to instead of under or ahead of other things.
Instead of this, everybody is promoting his favourite cities like a fan at a football match :bash:
so nothing to learn...
just much to beat...
so long
sad
partybits August 30th, 2005, 03:26 AM Your probably going to be bashed by some for your comments, so I'll just say that I have always agreed with your line of thought. I came to this website to learn new things and be inspired, not to compete with every city in the world.
On the other hand, competition (which involves ranking) can be healthy, if it does'nt result in blind stubborness which does tend to happen as the thread gets longer.
Travis007 August 30th, 2005, 03:27 AM If we have nothing to bitch about then there's no point in a forum. :(
Anymodal August 30th, 2005, 03:33 AM i think 80% of the people visiting this sub-section are nationalistic, over-opinionated pricks, 15% are plainly stupid and the rest are people with great minds/ideas (mostly geographers over 20 years old)
shibuya_suki August 30th, 2005, 07:16 AM if open thsoe topic make people annoy, this forum should be closed to avoid people annoying and nationalist
comapre which city has more .less of something, thats can improve people debating and source collecting skills, and learn more knowledge of city, although those topic are simple, but its easily to make every people understand,
its not the university/specified college forum ,we are not in university lecture room,we dont need much topic that is so professionalize :)
crazyjoeda August 30th, 2005, 07:46 AM Its fun and interesting to debate issues and express opinions, basicly it what seperates us from the Animals. Thats the point of a forum, otherwise you can urban development news from Google News.

I couldn't agree more... but if that's what floats their boats...
PanaManiac August 30th, 2005, 08:22 AM The nature of this forum begets comparison, that in turn, begets debate, which is the cornerstone of this forum. Comparison is implicitly promoted on a branch of this forum called: "City vs City." And if you'll excuse me, I'll shamelessly promote my favorite city below.

But this is just one subforum (Citytalk and City vs City), if you want to learn about cities there is 95% of the forum left (project-threads, photo-threads, construction-updates,infrastructure,portals....). I wouldn't judge Skyscrapercity based on this one section. :)
earthJoker August 30th, 2005, 11:44 AM Well all the comparispon threads should be moved to city vs city (the most boring subforum ever) so the Citytalk can become what it should be.

I totally agree with you.
Somewhere I read that the "first law" of journalism is: if you don't know what to say, just make a ranking. People will always like rankings, eventhough they are useless (sometimes).

Thanks! I am a geographer and 23 years old :tyty: It would be interesting to know who else studies (or has studied) geography.
Another question I already asked in another thread which I can't find anymore:
How can I make a quote so that the name of the guy I am quoting appears? Everybody can do it, except myself.

instead of using the "Reply"button you click on the "Quote" button of the post you want to quote (every post has a quote-button) :)
or you could enter the name in the quote yourself [QUOTE=insertname] instead of [QUOTE]
Storeman August 30th, 2005, 01:08 PM cool, thanks!
GM August 30th, 2005, 01:54 PM I am a geographer and 23 years old
So am I !
I am a geographer and I am 23 years old. ;)
tpe August 30th, 2005, 02:09 PM I think debate, statistical comparisons, and number-crunching has to be tempered by a vision of city life that goes beyond the numbers. To debate issues is fine so long as it is self-evident that there are usually no clear-cut answers/rankings to these things. Most of all, debate must be enlightened by a good knowledge and appreciation of other cities. A city is not cold statistics; it is a living and unique organism. And it is the people, not the buildings, that ultimately inform us of its inner life and richness.

ReddAlert August 30th, 2005, 03:37 PM I get tired of the same damn threads all the time.

I completely agree.
And as a newly appointed mod to this section, I'm definately looking to change this forum into something better...

tpe August 30th, 2005, 07:15 PM Thanks Panamaniac.
I don't know about poetry, but I do love cities.
samsonyuen August 30th, 2005, 08:53 PM I think comparisons are good because we can appreciate cities more. However, there is a distinct line between comparing and trolling.

Ein Rudi Völler, es gibt nur ein Rudi Völler, ein Rudi Völler!
partybits August 31st, 2005, 01:39 AM I dont think anyone has an issue with using cities to compare off eachother as it in facts does liven up debate. But I think everyone here can agree that more often than not, instead of having intelligent debate, it becomes a ramble. No logic is used, far off statistics are pulled up or even conjured up, ideas are reduces to guesses, and eventually the actual intention of the thread is lost.
Comparing is good to either inspire new ideas or work on finding the best in each city so others can learn off them.
Comparing is horrible when it's used to simply brag.
Anyways, who wants to compare NYC to LA now? lol
TalB August 31st, 2005, 08:03 AM I don't even go the City vs City section, b/c I think it's just childish to be comparing cities all the time.
Iwano September 5th, 2005, 01:55 PM Ein Rudi Völler, es gibt nur ein Rudi Völler, ein Rudi Völler!
Seems to be a nostalgic friend of german football...
United-States-of-America September 6th, 2005, 04:23 AM People like to compare stuff. Cities are no exception.

...usually just US Americans give this answer...don´t know why, perhaps it´s just your national sport? ;-)

haha, it is.. and the cities repeat like every week
James Foong September 10th, 2005, 03:04 AM human's ego explains all this.. i believe so.
neilio September 10th, 2005, 06:23 AM because we like comparing and its fun yaaaay yipee jump for joy!!! and the ultimate goal is to make skyscrapercity.com the biggest forum on the Internet and have like a billion people on it and then the City vs City threads will go crazy and everyone will turn on each other and start wars and go nuts and it will be the end of mankind as we know it!!! we are all doomed!!!DOOOMED i tell you!! So the apocolypse will be brought about as a result of this website...yaay. Ok so now that my pointless "not so sane" rant is done ill come back to reality..now all i have to say is....is...reality sucks im going back into my dream world. dont go crazy, dont go crazy, dont go crazy, dont go crazy, dont go crazy, dont go crazy, dont go crazy........
ok im actually sane but seriously i think the VS threads are very informing and interesting, and i always like hearing other people's opinions even if they are as dumb sometimes as my rant up above, and if we are all sane and hopefully mature then i dont see why any VS threads should be a problem.
london-b September 10th, 2005, 10:51 AM I really hate city vs city now, Think about it, London is loosing against Chicago, once won against BA by 1 and generally looses due to ignorant people branding all Brits as trolls and jealousy, put it this way, it's fucked up.

I wouldn't take these poll results too seriously. This is just a forum for skyscraper geeks, after all.
In the real world, the vast majority of people accept that London is one of the Big Four major world cities (along with NY/Tokyo/Paris).
