Glasgow's shipyards are set for a major recruitment drive, creating 400 jobs over the next 18 months. Plans for a multi million pound investment package will be unveiled later today to develop facilities at BAE Systems Govan and Scotstoun yards.
The future of shipbuilding on the Clyde was secured with the biggest warship building programme in the history of the Royal Navy. Construction of two carriers, three times as big as any that are currently in service, will keep the yards busy for the next 10-15 years.
The two yards have orders for six Type 45 destroyers and are hoping for a further two vessels. Further on, there is the MARS programme to build navy tankers and support vessels.
Today's announcement of a boost to their recruitment programme will increase the numbers on the shopfloor by as much as a third. Seventy new apprentices have just arrived taking the total number to have joined BAE Systems over the last three years to 380. The majority are from Glasgow and the West of Scotland. They will be trained as electricians, engineers and pipefitters.
Today's announcement of a £4 million regional selective assistance grant in support of an £18 million investment programme by the company will allow extensive upgrading and modernisation of the docks and deep water facility.
