View Full Version : Scenery along "new" walking routes...
hyacinthus September 1st, 2005, 10:20 AM I dunno what got into me today. Just took any bus... and see where the bus takes me to... alighted at amber rd and decided to walk... starting from amber gardens to tanjong katong rd then along mountbatten rd... results: 2 painful blisters... :sleepy:
These old private apartments/condos are taken along Amber Gardens. Not too sure what are their names. But, they have their own unique style.

The houses along Mountbatten Rd are usually big and have a big garden. Thus, some are converted into kindergartens or similar like the Eton House.

I'll go take a nap first... there are more to post. :p
RafflesCity September 1st, 2005, 12:06 PM Beautiful houses!
I like those with the Goodwood-style....I have some pics of those myself
Its quite interesting to see different areas of Singapore outside the city, post more!
Whose Homepage September 1st, 2005, 12:14 PM O my Lord, hyacynthus, I could kiss you!
What a great instinct you had to wander forth by bus into that unknown part of the world of Singapore and coming back to us with such beautiful pictures of such lovely buildings! :okay:
It's good to know that they are still around, and I hope they'll NEVER appear on any "threatened" list. :angel1:
Btw, I also like (hey, more than like) the modern buildings you show at the beginning. :)
heirloom September 1st, 2005, 12:31 PM i like the condominium with sharp edges. its similar to the edge (or something) by moshe safdie at newton / cairnhill, except older, and four sided.
@whose homepage
actually, its a pretty known place :p depends on where one lives i guess.
@hya
did you see the SCGlobal project?
hyacinthus September 1st, 2005, 01:01 PM Thanks RC, WH and heirloom for the comments.
Yes, I saw the SCGlobal signboard and site. Took some pics of the house on this huge site too. post later...

Going for dinner now... will post more later. :)
shao_ye September 1st, 2005, 01:26 PM its another side of Singapore that i've not seen before... like the 1st and 2nd pic, the balcony in the 2nd pic are like some disposable bowls being stuck to the units... and those old houses, hope it stays for as long as it would...
RafflesCity September 1st, 2005, 01:32 PM I would love to see what SCGlobal designs for that new project
@WH, indeed this is a rather nice area in Singapore, slightly east of the city, where there
are lots of houses, besides flats. In the past, these were located near the beach, until the land reclamation works started.
The original airport (http://www.can.com.sg/content/neocan/en/archive/spotlight/national_stadium/singapore_s_first.html) was also located nearby, and Mountbatten Rd was named after this (http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/2WWmountbatten.htm) man.
hyacinthus September 1st, 2005, 03:53 PM @RafflesCity
erm... I think they are selling 5 land parcels.
anyway, back to the houses... it's very slow uploading these pics to imageshack.

hyacinthus September 1st, 2005, 04:24 PM Now... after the unoccupied house above, I saw the site which SCGlobal has acquired.
Can tell where the site is?

Just for info, SCGlobal bought the Chan's Ville (FH) from Dr Chan Ah Kow last year at $11 million which work out to be $200psf/land.
If you see the signboard, it stated 5 land parcels.

heirloom September 1st, 2005, 05:39 PM oh ok.. chan ah kow...?!
i wonder why they'd put their company name up for 5 plots of land.. maybe they'd work with individual buyers on what they like. hope something marvellous comes up
redstone September 2nd, 2005, 10:26 AM Woah, Hya!!!!
The black house looks very Addams-family!
Looks like time for me to post pics.....

hyacinthus September 2nd, 2005, 02:50 PM hmmm... rather weird combination (refering to Sin Hoe Hotel). elephant with pig ears? dragon head with fish body? I wonder... who approves it. :weird:
heirloom September 2nd, 2005, 03:04 PM hrmm... never looked that closely.. merdragon, elepig. potential stb mascots.
redstone September 2nd, 2005, 04:30 PM Sin Hoe and the villa beside it are very pretty! :)
The other villa was dilapidated, and now undergoing extensive renovation/restoration works. They're twins! :D
RafflesCity September 3rd, 2005, 10:55 AM I absolutely love the Sin Hoe Hotel, its my favourite of the houses there, room rates at about SGD $40 a night.
My other favourite buildings would be the one with the Goodwood-style roof and that pic of the house with the green styling hya posted.
I also note that some of the owners living around there allow their bougainvillea & Honolulu creepers to grow wild, creating a very nice and colourful tropical ambience.
That area is so peaceful except for the roar of fighter planes now and then.
hyacinthus September 3rd, 2005, 11:46 AM This house is somewhere near Mountbatten. Belongs to one famous rich man... I think the Popiah King's house... not too sure. Forgot who had those Qin terracotta figures in the garden.
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/7369/dsc88952zy.jpg
redstone September 3rd, 2005, 01:19 PM It's at Meyer Road, I've taken pics of it. A huge estate surrounded by skyscraper condos. Pretty wierd with all those statues in the yard... :runaway:
I'm suprised the house is new.
RafflesCity September 3rd, 2005, 01:50 PM now thats cool, I've not noticed it.
But what impresses me is the creativity of the owners of those old houses, they seem to love adorning their abodes with statues and figures of animals!
Like that green one.
redstone September 3rd, 2005, 01:51 PM The house above is new.... as in post-colonial...
hyacinthus September 29th, 2005, 10:36 AM Just for info, SCGlobal bought the Chan's Ville (FH) from Dr Chan Ah Kow last year at $11 million which work out to be $200psf/land.

@heirloom => SC Global to restore Chan's Ville, build 4 bungalows (from business Times)
SC Global is planning to restore the Chan's Ville at Katong and build 4 bungalows on the land next to it. Chan's Ville and 14 other homes in Mountbatten Road were awarded conservation status by URA because of their distinct character and charm. SC Global plans to launch the houses for sale only next year.
redstone September 29th, 2005, 11:47 AM Chan Ah Kow (Chen Ah Gou), what a stereotypical name!
MOUNTBATTEN ROAD CONSERVATION AREA
http://www.ura.gov.sg/conservation/images/mount.jpg
Located along Mountbatten Road, the area was given conservation status on 23 July 1993. It contains 15 bungalows mainly of the Victorian and Art Deco Styles.
RafflesCity September 29th, 2005, 01:44 PM Oh I didnt know Mountbatten Rd houses are being conserved!
Then they should do something about the dilapidated state of some abandoned ones if possible.
redstone September 29th, 2005, 01:49 PM I thought you knew.
RafflesCity September 29th, 2005, 01:50 PM nope I didnt know.
redstone September 29th, 2005, 01:51 PM Orchard area, Katong are used to have TONS and TONS of luxurious villas and huge mansions...
Now... :(
urbanespaces March 9th, 2006, 06:38 AM 'Discovered' that Meyer Rd house last year- huge land, which is impressive in land scarce Singapore and loved the idea of those terracotta warriors flanking the winding driveway.
Not a big fan of the art deco lines for sale on Mountbatten. Have the same house on my site:
http://www.urbanespaces.com/artdecoeastcoast.html
although I tweaked the colours a little to give the pictures the look of a 'period' photograph.
I believe you could either opt to buy the house unrenovated or have the developers renovate it for you.
Have also been very impressed by 733(or was it 735?) Mountbatten which won an award for conservation some years back. That whole stretch on Mountbatten sees some lovely houses.
This,
http://www.urbanespaces.com/colonial%20east%20coast.html
I heard used to have a beach frontage before the frantic period of land reclamation. Owned by an illustrious Singaporean family, is still very well maintained. Again, beautiful driveway, lovely Peranakan detailing and gorgeous wooden flooring.
redstone March 10th, 2006, 12:45 PM I tried to private message you. Where is the house in the second link?
