View Full Version : Kota Bharu - The East Coast City

Mmmm...wondering why there's very little postings on the East Coast cities of KB, KT and Kuantan.

Born in KB, me think it has grown to be the largest urban centre in East Coast, and could comfortably rival Alor Setar, Seremban and the likes.
KB has the tallest Hotel-cum condo in EC.
Most chic shopping mall in EC
Biggest specialist hospital in EC

Many new high-rise projects of 20 or more storeys are sprucing up within the city skyline:
- Kelantan Trade Centre
- KB Trade Centre
- The new MPKBBI tower
- Intan Plaza
- Pelangi Mall
- Various Condos in the suburb of Kubang Kerian etc

KB deserves more highlights...

Being stay in many part of malaysian cities, i can confidently claim that Kota Bahru n Kuantan are much more livelier than alor star or miri and in fact can even match the city of ipoh. More hv to mention on developments in ktn n kb bcoz for most people in west coast, they quickly c east coast towns as dead n dilapidated areas, even though they have never visited these towns b4... dont believe me? ask them, n 5 out 10 still think that shit.

Like in kb, ktn night life is much more livelier than in ipoh n seremban minus the entertainment centres. For example, take a beautiful night walk along the crowded teluk chempedak beach, or join in the scores of people in night fishing along the scenic kuantan riverside. it is also not surprising to see crowded locals patronise into many chic kopitiams (in fact, alots!) centred around, for a cup of coffee n tastely roti bakar. I must say all these night activities don't coz u so much $$$ to fork out in a single trip. isn't that called ideal place to live n work?

Kelantan Applies For 255 Projects Costing RM811 Million
Updated : 03-12-2005
Media : Bernama

PASIR MAS, Dec 3 (Bernama) -- The Kelantan Health Department has applied for 255 projects involving RM811 million under the Ninth Malaysia Plan to provide the best medical service to the people in the state, Health Minister Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek said Saturday.

He hoped that the allocation, including for that the construction of a new hospital in Bachok costing RM80 million, would be approved.

The projects applied for in Pasir Mas involved the construction of a common usage building and maternity wards and the setting up of a pathology service and a blood bank with RM25 million.

The ongoing projects under the Eighth Malaysia Plan included the construction of staff quarters in Rantau Panjang, Kangkong, Tendong and Chekok, he said.

Several rural clinics here would also be upgraded while RM1 million was spent to set up a haemodialysis unit, maternity ward and outpatient unit at the Pasir Mas Hospital which began operation in October.

Dr Chua said RM93 million had also been allocated for 49 other projects in Kelantan including upgrading the hospitals in Gua Musang, Machang and Pasir Mas.

RM38m condotel to boost rooms in K. Baru
Monday January 9, 2006

KOTA BARU: The Kelantan government signed a joint-venture agreement with Muhajirin Service Apartment Sdn Bhd to build and manage a 221-unit condotel costing RM38mil in Jalan Hamzah, here.

“The project will begin next April and is expected to be completed in mid-2008. It will meet the rising need for accommodation in the town, especially during school holidays,” said Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat after the signing ceremony, recently.

The 19-storey condotel will have a swimming pool, three main halls and seven shoplots

Each of the three-room condotel units would be sold at RM178,000 to investors and Muhajirin Service Apartment would lease them at RM1,100 monthly for a specified tenure, said the company’s executive director Wan Azmi Wan Ismail.

The company would also maintain and manage the condotel, he said.

He said the business concept, although new in Kelantan, was expected to draw the interest of local residents as the sale price was cheap compared to other locations. – Bernama

Kelantan to create RM3b isle
Syed Umar Ariff

KOTA BARU, Sun
News (http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/nst/Monday/National/20060109092950/Article/index_html)

Kelantan is embarking on an ambitious RM3 billion mega-project — a 1,000ha man-made island surrounded by seven existing ones off the shores of Pantai Sri Tujuh in Tumpat.

The proposed project will be financed by local and international investors and is expected to be launched in a few months.

State Tourism, Culture and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Anuar Tan Abdullah said the Wau kite-shaped island would become one of the State’s main tourist attractions.

An 18-hole golf course, hotels and parks will be built on the island, which will sit more than three kilometres from the beach.

At a Press conference, Anuar said tourists would be transported to the island via a 16-minute hovercraft ride.

He said this was one of the many tourism projects to shed Kelantan’s image as a tourist’s transit point to Thailand.

"Most people come here either to head to Sungai Golok in Thailand or islands off the east coast. We are now turning the State into a top tourist destination," he said.

He added that more tourists, both foreign and local, had visited the State in the past two years thanks to the support of tourism authorities in Kelantan in promoting the State.

Anuar earlier presented rendang and ketupat to some 100 taxi drivers for Hari Raya Aidiladha in an event organised by Kota Baru Renaissance Hotel and the Kota Baru Taxi Drivers’ Association.

He said last year, more than six million tourist arrivals were recorded in the State, more than the previous year’s total of over five million.

To a question, Anuar said the project did not need approval from the Federal Government and an environmental impact assessment would only be conducted if needed.

However, when contacted for further explanation concerning the huge expense for the project, state Public Administration, Economic Planning, Finance and Community Development Committee chairman Husam Musa declined to comment.

Husam said there were a few matters about the project that were still being discussed. He declined to elaborate.

In 1997, the RM30 billion Kedah Coastal Extension Master Plan, consisting of a modern transportation hub including a new northern region international airport on two man-made islands of 2,800 hectares and 3,500 hectares, did not take off.

The most important issue is : Who wants to invest in a state ruled by a fundamentalist Islamic party?

Nih yang aku tak paham nih?

What has this got to do with investing and making money? :? Why so scared? Someone will chop off your hands or some other hanging projectile if you're up to no good? You'll be compelled to wear a veil and sarong and eat with your fingers in a communal dulang? What?

Have you been to Kota Bharu or are you just echoing some ill-defined pre-conceived notion of Kelantan based on hearsay and ignorance? While the Talams of this world are getting bankrupt with projects in some west coast boondock wilderness, other west coast-based developers (e.g., of the Renaissance Hotel complex) have long recouped their money and are now making sweet pure cash flow. KB Mall and the hypermarkets are jammed with shoppers. Downtown KB at peak hours resembles a Jakarta "macet banget" gridlock. Would more investments pour in (see the upcoming real estate developments above) if the investment climate is bad?

If politics is really an impediment to investments, why would anyone invest in "tyrannical" one-party communist states? China? Vietnam? Or in family-ruled "despotic" Kingdoms? Saudi Arabia? The Gulf States? Brunei? You know what, money will go anyplace where it can grow and multiply.

I suggest you take a walk around Kota Bharu today and sense the dynamism of the Kelantanese tribe and smell the money pouring in -- from the 2 milllion-strong Kelantanese diaspora plus the smart west coast businessmen who don't give a hoot about who "rules" the state. Are there any empty shoplots in KB? How much is a sq. ft. of land in KB .... if you can actually find a seller in the first place? What state has the most personal gold holdings per capita (remember the gelang-laden commercial-savvy makciks ubiquitous in KB)? What about ASB/ASN investments per capita?

Appreciate Kota Bharu and Kelantan for what they are and if you're a smart businessman, there's money to be made there -- irrespective of who "rules" the state.

O.K., habis cerita.

Now, lets all enjoy the pictures from nazrey, aBe, aleemon and the others.

KB offers discounts on parking fines
Wednesday January 18, 2006
BY IAN MCINTYRE

KOTA BARU: The city council here is giving discounts to those who settle overdue parking summonses in an attempt to get them to settle the fines quickly.

Kota Baru Municipal Council (MPKB) president Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman, however, did not say when the council would stop giving the discounts.

He said the discounts would be given to motorists who come to the headquarters to settle the fines.

“We will be fair. Depending on each case, we can offer discounts of between RM30 and RM2,000.

“It all depends on the reasons given by the defaulters,” he said in an interview recently.

Abdul Aziz said that MPKB did not want to create an image of being unreasonable on the issue of parking summonses.

“We are not demanding much. Just settle the arrears owed to local authorities,” he said, adding that the discount offer was an effective way to expedite the clearing of arrears.

He said that motorists could visit MPKB headquarters from 9am to 4pm daily except Fridays and Saturdays and ask to see him for the discount.

He urged motorists to settle the fines promptly as MPKB was working with the Road Transport Department to blacklist those with outstanding summonses.

They would not be able to renew their road tax if they owed the council huge amounts in fines, he added.

On complaints of an acute shortage of parking lots in Kota Baru, Abdul Aziz said the problem was created by motorists who wanted to park near their offices or commercial areas.

“They are too lazy to walk,” he said, adding that it was impossible for everyone to park next to their offices or the shops they wanted to go to in a fast developing town.

KOTA BHARU - CONSTRUCTIONS UPDATE
It's not exaggerating to say that KB is currently one of the most dynamic State Capital, with so many new projects /development going on within the city centre or its suburbs. Perhaps with the completion of those towers, KB could be in the top 10 list of cities with the best skylines in Malaysia!

And it's not just all about commercial development, the city is also embarking on beautification initiatives to the hugging Kelantan River banks where a Water Park Resort and recreational project a-la riverside esplanade are in the making. A new RM60mil, Safa-Marwa Square in front of the State Mosque is also already in the city development plan.

Not yet so far if I'm not mistaken.
But there were plans to propose KB to a city-status upgrading before, however the attempt did not materialise as KB's Municipal annual income currently stands at around RM60mil only, which is less than the prerequisite RM80mil.

Perhaps with more commercial development and inflow of people from nearby districts into the city/suburbs would improve on tax & revenue collection figure for KB and help expedite it to achieve city status.

Kuantan is really gearing up towards this city status thingy...
Only time will tell whether it's KB or Kuantan whose gonna be the 1st City in the east Coast.

hai guys! I'm still new to this forums.
used to stay in kota bharu for few years and had the opportunity to travel most of the cities through out peninsular malaysia, I can say most of the EC cities have started to challenged the so called big boys cities on the West Coast. This is especially Kota bharu and kuantan.

One would wonder why people are saying kelantan is one of the poorest state in malaysia and yet never been there?

To compare kota bharu city with other city like alor star, ipoh and seremban, it seem that kb is much vibrant and lively compared to those cities. kb is bigger than alor star and seremban. however kt is an emerging city in the EC. it slowly start to climb up the ladder to be among the big boys.

any way i must admit that the development of those cities of EC do not potrays the whole development of those states. the problem is most of the developments in the EC are centred at few towns and cities of Ec. While compared to other cities in WC, the spread of developments have been reached some of new areas.

Take kedah for example, alor star is just one of the big towns but if compared to sungai petani , the latter is much bigger and with lots of new development that match to towns of its neighbour states, i.e. penang. kedah also has kulim, langkawi and even jitra as a new town with lots of development.

for kelantan, the state need to spread out those developments to othe towns such as gua musang, tumpat, tanah merah and pasir mas. they cannot ignore those towns completely. to ensure, poverty can be reduced, the need to focus on secondary towns are very important.

the other thing, people are wonder why kb airport is fast becoming the important airport in the EC? the reason is there is no other closest airport around kb. alor star airport is just another airport in kedah. they have langkawi airport as well. those residing south of kedah had never use alor star airport. they are much nearer to penang and yet most of kedah's population are staying in south kedah. i.e. kulim and sungai petani.

however i must admit that EC cities need to be more introduced to malaysian in order to show that EC cities are also on par to those big boys in WC.

Welcome to FPLM emjay!

East Coast cities [3 only lah to be exact...] especially KB and Kuantan are fast catching up with their WC brethrens, though not at Klang Valley/Penang pace, the development is there & the locals do agree that their towns are becoming 'kohor maju'.

However, as emjay mentioned, true to EC style urban development - everything would be concentrated around the city centre of state capitals. For example, KB has sprawled 5-10KM away opening up business, condos in the new growth centres/suburb of Kubang Kerian, Pengkalan Chepa etc. But other places are still very much underdeveloped compared to WC cities.

I dare say that Seremban or Melaka's Metro area are much..much more developed than greater KB/Kuantan even if their city centres don't differ that much in size.

Tesco investing RM2b for expansion

BY YVONNE TAN

PETALING JAYA: Tesco Stores (M) Sdn Bhd expects to invest around RM2bil for expansion, including setting up three to five stores annually over the next three to five years.

Chief executive officer Chris Bush said the retail company had aggressive plans to grow organically.

“We plan to open three hypermarkets next year, one each in Johor Baru, Kota Baru and Alor Star,” he said in an interview yesterday.

Bush said the company, which announced its acquisition of all eight Makro Cash & Carry stores in Malaysia on Wednesday, planned to re-brand and refurbish all of the acquired stores at a cost of about RM240mil.

KB Mall wooing cineplex operator
Wednesday December 20, 2006
By IAN MCINTYRE
TheStar

KOTA BARU: The cinema may make a comeback here. A leading mall has included a six-screen cineplex in its expansion project scheduled for next year.

KB Mall manager John Teo said the mall was negotiating with a reputable operator to invest in the cineplex project.

“We have reserved the place for them and there is demand. So, it is up to the operator, owner and local authorities to seal the deal,” he said after leading 70 staff members in a gotong-royong to spruce up the mall yesterday.

The last cinema hall here closed down six years ago due to poor business, as it was easy to get pirated VCDs of the latest movies

58 projects for Kelantan cops under 9MP
Wednesday January 3, 2007
TheStar

FIFTY-EIGHT projects have been earmarked for the police in Kelantan under the Ninth Malaysia Plan.

Work on some projects has started, Deputy IGP Datuk Mohd Najib Abdul Aziz said in Kota Baru.

He said these projects included seven new district police headquarters and the new state police headquarters in Kota Baru.

Mohd Najib said other projects included 35 new police stations, 12 police beat bases and a new camp for the General Operations Force (GOF).

Work on the camp in Pengkalan Chepa has began and it is about 30% complete, Mohd Najib said after a one-day visit to the state recently.

He said three housing schemes for police personnel are also in the pipeline.

Certainly faster than kt and even outnumbered kuantan commercial projects. But there is an uncertainty of demand, which i dont think kb is ready to receive that amount of supplies. It could be the authority over approved.

There are about half a million people living within the Kelantan Basin which basically makes up greater Kota Bharu. And the fact that KB is the only Kelantan's urban centre of significant size - everybody from all corner of darul naim would literally flock to KB to do their shopping, services and etc.

KB also is infact the commercial city catering for most of the folks in the north part of Terengganu.

I foresee there'll be demands and due support for all the ongoing projects. BTW, those development are already long overdue since previously the state government imposed a ban on big scale commercial projects, which lately seems to have been relaxed to promote more urban growth in Kelantan.

Kelantan population is rather interesting to note.
It is not as simple as you might think.

According to the formal govt census ( year 2002 ? ) there are about 1.5 million people CURRENTLY LIVING in Kelantan by considering the then existing permanent households.

Meaning, the figure obviously did not include the " floating population " ( mainly from the neighbouring Southern Thai ) who often cross into Kelantan to do business ( due to racial & cultural etc similarities ) and ALSO not including those people currently working & living outside Kelantan - who identify themselves as Kelantanese.

Simple math.
1.5 million true population.
Plus, 1 million " overseas " Kelantanese ( who ocassionally return home ).
Plus, several thousands of floating population ( from South Thai, Northern Terengganu etc ).

Add those up and that makes a roughly 2.5 + + million consumers to "absorb all those projects " !

The reason why I would love to believe that Kota Bharu is a lot more promising than KT or even Kuantan !

Kelantan to implement masterplan for cleanliness
Wednesday April 4, 2007
By IAN MCINTYRE

KOTA BARU: The state government intends to implement its masterplan for cleanliness soon with an injection of a RM5mil fund and strict enforcement of laws, including on-the-spot fines of up to RM1,000 for litterbugs.

Heeding the Sultan of Kelantan Tuanku Ismail Petra’s recent royal address where the state was directed to improve cleanliness, it plans to purchase the latest available equipment to help keep the state clean besides placing more rubbish bins.

State Local Government committee chairman Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said he would seek approval at the state executive councillors-level for RM5mil to carry out the masterplan by this year.

“We have improved but Tuanku wants us to further improve and we will do it including purchasing equipment for beautification and landscaping,” Takiyuddin said.

He said the period of giving leeway to litterbugs have ended and with immediate effect, enforcement squads will be conducting constant patrols.

They wlll issue compounds of up to RM1,000.

Those compounded, including building and business operators and owners, shall be blacklisted, meaning they would be monitored from time to time, Takiyuddin said.

He added that the hefty punishment would act as a deterrent.

“We have bylaws which allow compounds of up to RM1,000. We need to be harsh as ratepayers here continue to ignore the habit of cleanliness.”

Takiyuddin said he has also directed district councils to stop being complacent and emulate the Kota Baru Municipal Council in carrying out the enforcement and beautification efforts.

True indeed.

The Kota Bharu socio-economic "catchment basin" transcends man-made national jurisdictions and political boundaries. Demographically, the "footprint" of the Kelantanese -- meaning a homogeneous group practising the Kelantanese culture and conversing in the Kelantanese dialect (in its various localised incarnations) extends from the captive Malay states of Singgora (Songkhla), particularly in the districts (Amphoe) of Sebayu (Sabayoi), Tiba (Tepha) and Cenak (Chana); Patani (Pattani); Jala (Yala) and Menara (Narathiwat) in today's Southern Thailand (3m people) to Kelantan proper (1.7m) and all the way south to Besut District of Trengganu (180k). The Kelantanese diaspora (people of Kelantanese ancestry living elsewhere) is estimated at between 1.5 to 2.5m. Hence, you're looking at a Kelantanese-centric socio-economic pool of ~7m people united by a cohesive sense of identity, shared destiny and super-positive self-image of who they are wherever on earth they might be.

KB's current boom is fueled by an increasingly pragmatic development stance by the state govt. as well as a sharp upsurge in investments from the Kelantanese diaspora -- people like myself who harvest serious bucks worldwide and pour back the funds into our ancestral state. Add the natural industriousness of the Kelantanese (as exemplified by the entrepreneurial womenfolk no less) and you have a recipe for sustainable economic growth.

Bluntly speaking, the typical Kelantanese are indifferent to petty party politics in their daily life. Whoever rules the state, the regular Pok Mak and Mok Cik will still go about their affairs in their own self-sufficient, entrepreneurial way, with no desire for government handouts and handholding that has debilitated many of their non-Kelantanese brethrens on the West Coast.

This is how the Kota Bharu Trade Centre would look like when it's completed!
With Giant and Parkson as anchor tenants

http://f9g.yahoofs.com/groups/g_19019126/.HomePage/__sr_/9fe8.jpg?grhdyLGBiZ7ZqVDv

KBTC strategically situated in the heart and the busiest of Kota Bharu town center and surrounded by bus terminal, schools, market, hotels and the main commercial hub of Kota Bharu (mainly 4-storey shop lots). The estimated human traffic is an average 35,000 persons a week. Hence, the human traffic volume to the complex is assured to be encouraging.

KBTC is designed to be a top-notch commercial center with comprehensive facilities. Our anchor tenants, namely the Giant Hypermarket and Parkson Departmental Store have occupied 3/4 each of the lower ground, ground, first and second floor. In addition, our third floor is specially dedicated to the local specialties such as Kelantan’s handicrafts, batiks, jewelry, curios and other local accessories

Wait a minute.
Do u mean, you haven't been to Kelantan ?
Cuz, you made me feel that way ..... :uh:

Kelantan, being heavily populated since the old days and with many private-owned lands, makes town-planning rather complicated and challenging. To make matters worse , many individual lands are owned by multiple owners ( legacy from the feudal days ). Somewhat like Kampung Baru in KL in a way.

Most choose to develop their lands themselves but have very little funding to go with highrises or any other big projects. So, most resorted to building descent two storeys shoplots. The reason why there are rows and rows of shophouses of various constructions ( wooden, bricks etc ), and few skyscrapers in Kelantan. Those who couldn't ( for various reasons ; from lack of funding to family feuds ), often leave their high valued lands empty rather than selling them away.

So, dont count too much on town planning when it comes to Kelantan.
I would consider Kota Bharu to be very lucky if a highrise could pop up among those "village houses" and "coconut trees", beautifully and well matched.

But I dont think the "coconut trees" and "village houses" spoil the skyline. To me, they give the town a unique, somewhat romantic ambience that cities like KL don't have or even yearn to have !

And oh yeah,
with the latest Kedah ~ Kelantan oil pipeline project being newly approved, I bet things would get a lot " rougher " in Kelantan, particularly the state capital - Kota Bharu !

Already in KB :
1) BILLION Dept Store
2) THE STORE Dept Store
3) PACIFIC Hypermart ( aka The Store )
4) PANTAI TIMUR Dept Store & Hypermart ( aka Billion )
5) MYDIN

Will come to KB soon :
1) TESCO
2) GIANT
3) PARKSON ( aka GIANT ) --> not sure of this one

Try this link :

Judging by how they normally behave and having their behavior matched with the local economy, I believe that should be enough for the time being. I dont think more will come, at least not soon. More competition would only spell less profit for these boys - meaning, they have to split up the cake into yet smaller pieces.

Btw, I wonder what else they got in KL other than the listed above ?
Carrefour ? Jusco ? Isetan ?

Not a great fan of shopping malls tho ..

Kota Bharu town as seen from across the river,
from a stretch of fertile agricultural plain aka flood plain at Palekbang ( pronounce : Puh-laek-bae ) in Jajahan Tumpat, Kelantan.

The building to the right, the under construction but nearly completed,
is a Condominium cum shoplots cum shopping mall namely " Pelangi Mall "
( yuck .. I think there are dozens more with similar name throughout the country
- can't these ppl be a lil bit more creative with the name ? Like something best describing the area ? How lame .. :ohno: ).

The soon to be Mall ( minus the next door shoplots ) seems smaller than the existing KB Mall
but its unique location i.e facing the river, wide stretch of greeneries
plus beautiful sunset, would make it a great attraction I believe.
Outdoor cafes overlooking the river would be superb too.

Have no idea what sort of commercial establishments will end up there there.

Anyone here knows ?

Tesco to open in Kelantan
Wednesday October 17, 2007
By IAN McINTYRE
TheStar

KOTA BARU: The shopping-in-hypermarket culture will finally reach Kelantan when Tesco opens here in January.

The Tesco hypermarket will be part of a multi-billion ringgit four-phase riverside development project beneath the landmark Sultan Yahya Petra Bridge.

A 100% privatised project by Kuala Lumpur-based developer Liziz Standarco Sdn Bhd, Tesco will be the anchor tenant of the state capital’s newest commercial hub.

In the first phase scheduled for completion by early next year, there will be 3,500 shop houses, an international mall, a centralised stage-bus station, a five-star hotel and the hypermarket.

According to the developer’s main contractor, Ramlus Sidiqe Sidek, the project will transform the commercial and retail scene in the state.

He said the state government will soon come up with a brand name for the entire project which will also incorporate flood mitigation measures.

Ramlus said the developer was committed to help with flood mitigation by reclaiming sand from Sungai Kelantan.

The project will also shift the flow of traffic towards the western part of Kota Baru and solve the parking problem in the town centre.

The mix-development project would also see high-end property projects for housing, commercial and recreational purposes.

Ramlus hopes the project can become the catalyst to ensure that retail and property markets in Kelantan are on par with similar projects in the other states.

Well...Kota Bharu's "Merkek" (Market) or Pasar Besar is perhaps the most photographed central market in the country I guess. There was even a couple getting their wedding photo shots inside it before!

The name Siti Khadijah was taken in honour to the name of Prophet Mohammad's
wife, and perhaps to reflect the fact that most of the traders there are mostly - women.

Mydin proposes to build country’s biggest hypermarket in Kelantan

By IAN MCINTYRE

KOTA BARU: MydinWholesale Emporium Sdn Bhd plans to establish the biggest hypermarket in Malaysia at the New Tunjong Township here.

The proposed RM100mil facility would sit on 7.2ha with a floor space of 650,000 sq ft and generating about 3,000 of direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Earthworks on the latest outlet should begin by July and operations commence within a year, said managing director Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin yesterday after the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Mydin and Tunjong Development Corp Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Mentri Besar Inc, for the hypermarket project.

“It is a fast-track project and the construction of a hypermarket is not an arduous feat in terms of building and infrastructure. We are confident of unveiling it next year,” Ameer said.

Since Mydin started and grew in Kelantan, it was only appropriate for the supermarket and hypermarket chain to invest in the east coast state, he added.

The biggest hypermarket in the country currently is also owned by Mydin, which also operates 24 emporiums and another hypermarket.

The Subang Jaya, Selangor, facility has a built-up area of 500,000 sq ft.

Mydin is also embarking on an expansion exercise which would see it operating six more hypermarkets including the one in Tunjong by next year.

At the same event, an MoU was inked between Kelantan Utilities Mubaarakan Holdings Sdn Bhd, Perak-based Kinson Manufacturing Sdn Bhd and Kelantan Handicraft Foundation for the formation of a joint venture company called Masna Pipes Industries Sdn Bhd.

Masna will make and supply asbestos cement water pipes for the east coast market.

Kelantan Utilities is the parent company of state water utility Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd.

Coolness! KB has alot of ongoing projects which create somewhat a chaos I guess, esp in the town area near SKMK bus station. I'm sure KB will have a great skyline 3-5 years from now.

If Kelantan has such a great city like this, why alot of Kelantanese migrate to major cities like KL?

It took me by surprise about the developments in Kota Bahru, which means PAS also bolih lah.

I have been travelling lot of places in the world, it is normal that secondary cities like Kota Bahru, Alor Star, Ipoh, Kuantan, Penang travelling to primary cities like Kuala Lumpur or Singapore for jobs opportunities. The same also happened to Japan, Korea and China.

Since the rakyat is giving the chance to Opposition, I hope the Opposition should take it as a challenge for the Barisan Nasional. Only with the comparison, I believe that Malaysia will be a good country to stay.

Skyscraper in Kota Baru
By IAN MCINTYRE

KOTA BARU: The first phase completion of a RM300mil mixed development project in Jalan Raja Dewa here in 36 months will transform the skyline of the state capital.

The Dataran Raja Dewa project was hailed as an iconic real estate boost for Kelantan with the building of a twin towers of 31 storeys, said developer Petraz Holdings Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Dr Stanley Chew.

Sited on 6.3ha, the project would showcase Islamic architecture, he said after signing a memorandum of understanding between the Kuala Lumpur-based Petraz and the Kelantan government last Wednesday.

Dr Chew said Petraz had 23 years' experience in the property market with its niche in the warehousing industry in Klang, Selangor.

On Petraz’s foray into Kelantan, he said real estate was reaching saturation levels in other states while Kelantan was an emerging market.

“There is potential here so we have come to seek the opportunities while bringing about modern development to the town,” Dr Chew said.

He said the developer was discussing with potential anchor tenants including five-star hotel operators, hypermarket operators and shopping mall operators about the commercial aspect.

The shophouses would likely be leased by state government departments and local merchants, he said, adding that the first phase would be ready in 36 months and the second by 2014.

Besides bringing in new commercial enterprises and investments, the project is set to become a new landmark for Kota Baru.

The project comprises 40 units of three-storey shophouses, four blocks of five-storey office lots, twin 31-floor office lots, an eight-storey building which can house trade exhibitions and a three-storey car park.

There are also two 12-storey service apartments and 126 town houses in the project.

Kelantan To Build Circuit For Mat Rempit To Show Off Riding Prowess
April 29, 2008 19:08 PM

KOTA BAHARU, April 29 (Bernama) -- Mat Rempit in Kelantan will soon be able to show off their riding prowess when the state government sets up a special circuit for them.

Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat does not think that building the circuit is a waste as this will help check the "rempit" menace where Mat Rempit love to show off their riding stunts on public roads, and also illegal racing among this young group of daredevil motorcyclists.

"Mat Rempit always make their mothers worry. When untoward incidents happen involving them, it's pitiful to see their mothers, wives and children crying," said the PAS spiritual leader.

"We build a special circuit for them to let go their feelings and show off their prowess and heroics," he added when winding up the debate on the 2008 additional budget at the state assembly sitting, here Tuesday.

Nik Aziz said the decision to build the circuit was based on the recommendation of the state's senior police officers so that the Mat Rempit would not use public roads as their racing tracks.

"The nurturing and moulding of Mat Rempit into good human capital would be done gradually.

"If young people want to show their prowess, there must be a suitable place for them to do so, and at the same time we inject advice and prayer into their motor riding activities," he said.

Earlier, Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob said the state government would look into the proposal by opposition leader Datuk Alwi Che Ahmad (BN-Kok Lanas) that a special zone be created for agriculture to increase food production, especially rice.

He said the state government also planned to discuss with Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed on strengthening cooperation with the federal government in developing the agriculture sector in Kelantan.

The motion on the 2008 additional budget was passed after it received unanimous support from the assembly.

PAS has 38 seats in the state assembly, Barisan Nasional six and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) one.

The assembly sitting was adjourned until Wednesday.

Well well, looks like KB will definitely have a skyline that can rival most of the big cities here on the West Coast... KT is a disappointment and Kuantan is the only major rival to the Kelantan capital at the East, IMO...

Cruise along Kelantan River
Friday May 2, 2008
by C.A. ZULKIFLE
TheStar

TOURISTS visiting Kota Baru in Kelantan can now opt for a river cruise along the Kelantan River.

The Kelantan Tourism Association and two private companies teamed up to introduce the cruise in March in conjunction with Visit Kelantan Year 2008.

The three parties decided to pool their resources following a call from the state government for more tourism products, Kelantan Tourism Malaysia director Muhammad Zaki Talib said.

The two-hour cruise is on a RM600,000 boat called Seroja which has an air-conditioned cabin that can seat 40 people, a cafe and karaoke facility.

The cruise starts at Seroja Jetty near Tesco hypermarket and takes passengers to the Kuala Besar fishermen jetty, 15km upriver, before turning back to Seroja Jetty.

Among the sights along the way are old temples where traders from China were said to have stopped over before they headed down to Malacca in the past.

Passengers will also be able to see local residents taking part in recreational activities such as angling, horse riding and picnics on the riverbank.

At Kuala Besar, they can buy both cooked and raw seafood at the wet market there before returning to Seroja Jetty.

There is currently one trip on Friday and Saturday departing at 5pm on both days. The trip costs RM15 for adults and RM7 for children aged between three and 12. Groups can request for trips at other times.

Cruise operator Azhisham Mus-tapa said tour guides had been hired to give a commentary du-ring the cruise.

He said there were packages for students, newly-married couples, birthdays or corporate events.

Hotels in Kelantan hit by cancellations

HOTELS in Kelantan suffered significant cancellations from government agencies following the Prime Minister’s remark that the public sector should keep their hotel conferences and seminars down to a minimum.

Kelantan chapter of the Malaysia Association of Hotels (MAH) chairman N. Subramaniam said the public sector had interpreted Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s advice to cover all seminars or conferences, leading to huge cancellations.

He said hotels in Kelantan depended heavily on the public sector to churn out revenue and the cancellations had affected their operations.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Subramaniam said government agencies played a pivotal role in the country’s macro-economy because they were the engines of growth.

“If they stop entirely in helping out the private sector like hotels and the tourism sector, the domestic consumption rate in the country will suffer, slowing down economic activities.

“This will lead to hotels cutting down on operation costs and this will cause possible retrenchments,” he added.

Subramaniam, who is also national vice-president of MAH, said there were 100 small-scale to star-rated hotel chains in Kelantan and about 6,000 hotels throughout the country.

He said there should not be a blanket cancellation as far as meetings, incentives, seminars, conventions and exhibitions (MISCE) were concerned and that a reasonable level of reduction would suffice.

Subramaniam said hotels in Kelantan lost about RM500,000 within three weeks when govern-ment agencies cancelled their bookings recently.

Seafood chain to cast net in Saudi Arabia

REVENUE Valley Sdn Bhd plans to open 21 London Fish Tales fast food outlets soon in Saudi Arabia.

Its managing director George Ang said seafood was fast getting popular among the Arab community.

London Fish Tales, which serves fish and chips and other fish-based dishes, is Revenue Valley’s first foray into the fast food business after its successful Manhattan Fish Market chain.

There are now some 30 Manhattan Fish Market outlets in Malaysia besides one each in Thailand, Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) and two in Singapore.

Ang said the company decided to tap the younger market with the London Fish Tales outlets which offered affordable dishes as there was no service charge.

Ang was at the soft launch of the London Fish Tales outlet at the Tesco hypermarket in Kota Baru recently.

It is the first London Fish Tales outlet in Malaysia.

The outlet has 18 workers who were trained by eight trainers brought in from Kuala Lumpur, Ang said.

“Most of the raw food such the pollock, pacific dory and butter cod are imported,” he said.

Kota Baru hotel pushes halal cowboy cuisine
Saturday August 9, 2008
TheStar

KOTA BARU: A hotel here plans to start the state’s first halal western-themed restaurant to liven up the evening in highly conservative Kelantan.

Grand Riverview Hotel general manager Patrick Cheng said besides boosting the hotel’s food and beverage sales, the outlet would become a focal point for residents and guests to unwind.

“We will ensure that the decor reflects cowboy surroundings.

“The cuisine would be a fusion of western fare and dishes unseen before here,” he said.

He added that the hotel would be expanded from 268 rooms to 312 with a special executive floor and four new suites.

It would also be extensively promoted in the five Pakatan Rakyat-controlled states.

“We see more movement of people and capital in the five states and we hope to tap the market by providing more packages for travellers.

“We also hope to hold joint promotions with travel trade members in the states,” Cheng said.

Other plans include holding a river cruise with the hotel’s hovercraft.

“With cooperation from the state government, we hope to offer sunset cruises and romantic dinner settings along Sungai Kelantan,” he said.

He said the hotel hopes to work closely with the tourism authorities in realising the industry’s potential in Kelantan.

Projek bandar baru masih tahap perancangan

KOTA BHARU 21 Okt.

Jambatan kedua Sultan Yahya Petra siap 2010

KOTA BHARU 21 Okt.

STALLED SECOND SULTAN YAHYA PETRA BRIDGE TO BE READY END-2010

KOTA BAHARU, Oct 21 (Bernama) -- The stalled second Sultan Yahya Petra Bridge project is now expected to be completed at the end of 2010, one year behind schedule, the Kelantan state assembly was told today.

State Housing, Public Works, Utilities and Environment Committee chairman Maj (Rtd) Anizam Abdul Rahman said the new completion date was arrived at following a review of the project as a result of work delay and after it stalled last July.

"It was scheduled for completion at the end of next year but after the review it is now expected to be completed one year later," he said when replying to a question from Wan Yusoff Wan Setapa (PAS-Gual Ipoh).

Anizam said the original cost of the project was RM143 million but following the review it was increased by RM7 million owing to a rise in the cost of materials.

He also said that a senior Public Works Department officer had been appointed to supervise the project. The bridge will serve as a vital link between Kota Baharu and Tumpat.

Kelantan minta landasan lapangan terbang dipanjangkan

http://www.malaysiaairports.com.my/view.php?dbIndex=0&website_id=1&id=45

KOTA BHARU 3 Nov.

Tumpat temple to get Thai royal award

KOTA BARU: Wat Pikulthong in Tumpat is set to be the first Buddhist temple in Malaysia to be honoured with the prestigious Royal Kathin award from Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The award, comprising the royal Kathin robes and RM50,000 in donations, will be presented to the temple by Thailand's former Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Tej Bunnag during a two-day ceremony beginning tomorrow.

Thai Consul-General Surapon Petch-Vra said yesterday that the award, which was part of the Buddhist merit-making ritual, was the first to be conferred on a Malaysian Buddhist temple.

It is usually given to ordained monks at Buddhist temples throughout Thailand and abroad.

Petch-Vra said Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed were expected to attend the ceremony.

"This is a significant ceremony and it reflects the close and long-standing relationship between Thailand and Kelantan.

"The participation of high-level officials from Kelantan in the ceremony signifies the tolerance adopted by the state and the Malaysian government towards the many faiths and religions.

"We expect around 10,000 people from Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore at the ceremony as this will be followed by the Loy Krathong festival on Wednesday evening."

He said the ceremony was held at the end of the Buddhist Lent period or after the three-month rainy season retreat. Thai Buddhists believe that the Kathin ceremony is the most noteworthy form of merit-making apart from the ordination of a close kin.

"This tradition has long been a part of Thai culture. Once in a lifetime, Thai Buddhists look forward to an opportunity to sponsor or at least take part in the annual Kathin ceremony to redeem merit for themselves," explained Petch-Vra.

To be eligible, the chosen temple must have at least five monks in residence and only those residing during the entire Buddhist Lent period are entitled to receive the royal robes and donations.

The word "Kathin" literally means the "embroidered frame" used in the sewing of the yellow robes.

In the old days, making the robe involved a long and arduous process as the fabric comprised rags collected from dead bodies since cloth was in short supply then and had to be handwoven from cotton.

Tourism hit as Kelantan’s beaches are washed away

KOTA BARU: Most of Kelantan’s beaches are badly eroded and this is affecting the state’s tourism plans.

Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) director-general Datuk Ahmad Husaini Sulaiman said that erosion is eating away at some 30km of beachfront stretching from Sabak in Pengkalan Chepa up through the Thai-Malaysia border areas.

DID has placed those areas under category one, with erosion occurring rapidly over the past five years.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2008/11/27/nation/n_30nawi.jpg
Disappearing act:. Fisherman Nawi Mahmud, 75, walks along Pantai Kuala Pak Amat which is being eroded by strong waves from the South China Sea.

“To date, DID has not received any significant plans on how to arrest the natural phenomenon but we would undertake a study and recommend to the rightful authorities how best to tackle the problem,” Ahmad Husaini said after inspecting the erosion at Pantai Kuala Pak Amat in the Pantai Cahaya Bulan (PCB) coastal area.

Erosion of local beaches is cited as a natural phenomenon due to the increasingly strong waves from the South China Sea.

It is disheartening to the state since Kuala Pak Amat, for instance, has sound tourist potential having been the historic landing site of Japanese troops in World War II.

This was the Japanese point of invasion into Malaya just hours before its carriers bombed the US Pacific fleet in Pearl Harbour, Hawaii.

For now, Ahmad Husaini said the DID planned to seek federal allocation to rehabilitate the Kuala Pak Amat beachfront next year.

It would also closely monitor the remaining stretches of beach to prevent the erosion from reaching coastal villages.

To date, the DID has installed two wave breakers at Sabak and in Pantai Irama, Bachok.

However, more are needed in the long-term to overcome the erosion, Ahmad Husaini said.

Projek naik taraf landasan LTSIP diteruskan

KOTA BHARU 24 Nov.

MPKB-BRI usaha tingkatkan status

Oleh AZRAN FITRI RAHIM

KOTA BHARU 11 Dis.

Can someone with authority at the MPKB suggest to the council to start off a project to 'Underground' all the powerlines and telco cables within the city.

Kota Bharu really needs this long overdue clean up.
The criss crossing of overhead cables all over the places is soo Tak Comei.
Kinda remind us of those Thailand cities across the border...:shifty:

Cadang LTSIP jadi transit

Oleh RAHANA MOHD DAHARI
utusankelantan@utusan.com.my

Tandas empat bintang angkat imej Kelantan
Oleh Khairul Anuar Abdul Samad
krull@bharian.com.my

Keunikan Masjid Lama Mulong
