Mount Rushmore

http://www.milehighmotel.com/images/Mount-Rushmore-2001.jpg

Mount Rushmore National Memorial, located in Keystone, South Dakota, memorializes the birth, growth, preservation and development of the United States of America. The Mount Rushmore National Memorial Park has 1,278 acres (5.17 km²).

Between 1927 and October 31, 1941, Gutzon Borglum and 400 workers sculpted the 60 foot (18 m) colossal busts of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln to represent the first 150 years of American history.

Well, wjfox, I'm not sure about our oldest churches, but we have quite a few biggies. :D

There's the Temple Emanu-El:

http://www.thecityreview.com/ues/fifave/emanuel.jpg

"Temple Emanu-El was the first Reform Jewish congregation in New York City and, due to its size and prominence, has served as a flagship congregation in the Reform branch of Judaism since its founding in 1845. Its landmark building on Fifth Avenue is the largest Jewish house of worship in the world. The congregation's current spiritual leader is Senior Rabbi Dr. David M. Posner."

St. Patrick's

http://www.thecityreview.com/stpats1.gif
Located in New York. It seats around 2000 people, making it(I think) the world's largest Catholic church.

New Orleans
New Orleans is a Southern city known for its multicultural heritage (especially French, Spanish and African American influences) and its music and cuisine. It is a world-famous tourist destination thanks to its many festivals and celebrations; the most notable annual events are Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, Southern Decadence, and college football's Sugar Bowl.

The city was founded in 1718 and has played an important role in the history of the United States. The city was named in the honor of Philippe, duc d'Orléans, who was regent and ruler of France when the city was founded; the name of the city alludes to the existing city of Orléans in central France.

It is a major port city due to its location near the Gulf of Mexico and along the Mississippi River, making it a hub for goods which travel to and from Latin America. The petroleum industry is also of great importance to the New Orleans economy; many oil rigs are located in the Gulf. The Port of South Louisiana (which includes the port of N.O.) is based in the New Orleans metropolitan area and is the fourth largest port, in terms of raw tonnage, in the world.

The city's several nicknames describe various characteristics of the city, including the "Crescent City" (describing its shape around the Mississippi River), and the "Big Easy," or the, "City that Care Forgot," (associated with the easy going and carefree nature of many of the local residents). The city's unofficial (yet commonly touted) motto, "Laissez les bons temps rouler" (translated to: "Let the good times roll"), also describes the party-like attitude of many residents.

Yellowstone National Park - Wyoming

Welcome to America's first national park. "The park is famous for its various geysers, hot springs, and other geothermal features and is home to grizzly bears and wolves, and free-ranging herds of bison and elk." - Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowstone).

Lower Yellowstone Falls and Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone - The lower falls are 308 feet (94 m) high--nearly twice as high as Niagara.

Grand Prismatic Spring - The largest hotspring in the US and third largest in the world at 300 feet (91 m) in diameter. Its striking color comes from the presence of pigmented cynobacteria.

Chicago River
Illinois

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/84/Chicago_river_2004.jpg

The Chicago River is 156 miles (251 km) long, and flows through downtown Chicago, Illinois. The river is not particularly long, but is notable for 19th-century civil engineering feats which directed its flow south, away from the city and towards the Mississippi River basin for sanitation purposes. The river is also noted for being dyed green on St. Patrick's Day.
www.wikipedia.com

For all you skyscraper-construction nuts, you'd better take a cruise down the river in a year or two.
Being built right on the river, we have:
Trump Tower Chicago: 90 floors(u/c)
Waterview Tower: 85 floors (approved)
Fordham Spire: 115 floors (proposed)

Frank Lloyd Wright (June 8, 1867 – April 9, 1959) was one of the most prominent architects of the first half of the 20th century. To this day he is easily America's most famous architect (topping Philip Johnson, Louis Kahn, and Frank Gehry) and still extremely well-known in the common public's eye.

The New York Stock Exchange

The origin of the NYSE can be traced to May 17, 1792 when the Buttonwood Agreement was signed by twenty-four stock brokers outside of 68 Wall Street in New York under a buttonwood tree. On March 8, 1817 the organization drafted a constitution and renamed itself the "New York Stock & Exchange Board". This name was shortened to its current form in 1863. It's current building was constructed in 1901.

Today, it is, by far, the world's largest stock exchange; followed by Nasdaq in Times Square.

Smith Building
Seattle

The Smith Tower, located in Pioneer Square, is the oldest skyscraper in Seattle, Washington. It is named after its builder, firearm and typewriter magnate Lyman C. Smith. It was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River from its completion in 1914 until the Space Needle overtook it in 1962. It remained the tallest office building west of the Mississippi River until the Humble Building (now Exxon Building) was built in 1963.

Fort Worth is the best place in the country to celebrate the romance and mystique of the American West. And the Stockyards National Historic District is the best place to start.

The Stockyards covers 125 acres — 15 square blocks of tradition, nightlife, and family fun. You can take in a thrilling rodeo. See the world's only daily cattle drive. Hear live country stars. Boston
Massachusetts
City-proper population: 586,000
Greater Boston: 5.8 million

Boston's history spans nearly four centuries, and intertwines with the history of the United States.

Founded on September 17, 1630, on a narrow peninsula called
Shawmut by Native Americans who lived there, Boston is named after
Boston, England, a town in Lincolnshire from which several prominent
colonists originated. Early colonists believed that Boston was a community
with a special covenant with God. Winthrop's sermon, "a City upon a Hill," captured this idea.
These values molded an extremely stable and
well-structured society in Boston. Indeed, Puritan values of hard work, moral
uprightness, and education remain a part of Boston's culture.

Boston was birthplace of the American Revolution. The Boston Massacre, the
Boston Tea Party, and several early battles of the Revolution, (such as the
Battle of Lexington and Concord, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the Siege of
Boston) occurred in or near the city. During this period, Paul Revere made his celebrated midnight ride.

Following the Revolution, Boston became one of the world's wealthiest
international trading ports, exporting products such as rum, fish, salt and
tobacco. It was chartered as a city in 1822, and by the mid-1800s it was one
of the largest manufacturing centers in the nation, noted for its garment
production, leather goods, and machinery industries.

Jaws - Maui, Hawaii

Surf here if you dare. Only the best survive. Waves have been reported at Jaws as high as 90 feet (27m). The waves are so high and fast that the only way to surf them is through tow-in surfing, which uses a jet-ski. It was here that Ken Bradshaw caught the largest wave ever surfed by a human being--85 feet (26m).

MAN MADE

The Manhattan skyline - Skyscrapers leaping skyward, dancing with the sun, light joyously answering light; then as night falls setting off a cartwheeling, skyrocketing fireworks explosion of color, now dancing with the stars and moon. And of course my favorite stadt kronen (city crowns) the Empire State and Chrysler buildings, are leading the dance...

Chicago from the river or the lake, ditto, with Sears, John Hancock & friends strutting their stuff...I'll never forget the fog rolling back like a curtain just as we're heading along the expressway (had the Chamber of Commerce just had a little talk with God?); the only thing I could say was, "Now THAT'S a skyline!!!..."

The ring-tailed, rip-snortin' chaos & COMMOTION of New Yorkers' continuing contest with themselves to see precisely how many people, cars, trucks, buses, skyscrapers, etc. they can pile on that island without the whole thing toppling over into the harbor...

Large book stores with comfortable chairs and cafes where you can sort through your loot before heading for the checkout...

St. Patrick's, with her lacey spires and gables, nestling delicately among the office towers of Midtown Manhattan, as if she'd just been sent over special delivery straight from Europe...

First Transcontinental Railroad

The First Transcontinental Railroad in the United States was built across North America in the 1860s, linking the railway network of the eastern U.S. with California on the Pacific coast. Finished on May 10, 1869 at the famous Golden spike event at Promontory Summit, Utah, it created a nationwide mechanized transportation network that revolutionized the population and economy of the American West, catalyzing the transition from the wagon trains of previous decades to a modern transportation system.

http://www.buffalosoldier.net/Joining%20tracks%20for%20the%20Transcontinental%20Railroad%20Promotory%20Utah%20Terr.,%201869.gif

There were two competing companies; the Union Pacific[building west] and Central Pacific[building East]. They were competing to get to Promontory, Utah first for federal grants. Shown above is the Golden spike ceremony.

Seriously, though. Read about this; it's amazing.

I read that Mt. Mckinley in Alaska is the largest/tallest block of mountain mass in the world, because taller mountains are mostly peaks while Mt. McKinley is mostly its own mass. It is a magnifiscent sight, but it is mostly obscured by clouds when you enter Denali Park. The entrance is about 80 miles from the mountain itself.

Terminal Tower
Cleveland, Ohio

Terminal Tower was not completed until 1930, after a long period of construction - at the time, it was the second largest excavation project in the world after the Panama Canal. It would remain the tallest building in the world outside of New York City until the completion of the Prudential Center in Boston in 1967. For many decades it was by far the most notable part of the Cleveland skyline.

Terminal Tower is still the 2nd tallest building in Cleveland.

South Miami Beach, Florida

South Beach (or "the Beach" as known to its locals) is a section of Miami Beach, Florida that encompasses the lower 23 blocks of the island from the point south of 1st Street to 23rd Street. This area was the first section of Miami Beach to be developed starting in the 1910s, thanks to development efforts of Carl Fischer, the Lummus Brothers, John Collins, and others. The area has gone through numerous changes over the years --some man-made and some due to the forces of nature, like the hurricane of 1926 that destroyed much of the area.

Indepedence Hall, Philadelphia

Independence Hall, officially known as the Pennsylvania State House, is a historic building in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Built between 1732 and 1753, it was designed in the Georgian style of architecture by Edmund Wooley and Alexander Hamilton. It was commissioned by the Pennsylvania colonial legislature and is located on Chestnut Street between 5th and 6th Streets.

It was the principal meeting place of the Second Continental Congress from 1775 to 1783, the site of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776, and of the drafting and signing of the United States Constitution in 1787. During the hot summer of 1787, the windows were kept shut so that others could not hear the discussions going on inside. Its belltower was the original home of the Liberty Bell.

Wow the US is SO beatiful and diverse!! Crater Lake National Park in Oregon is widely known for its intense blue color and spectacular views. The winter brings some of the heaviest snowfall in the country, averaging 45 feet of snow per year.

Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States
The second deepest lake in the Western Hemisphere
The seventh deepest lake in the world
Maximum lake depth: 1932 feet
Average lake depth: 1500 feet
Maximum lake width: 6 miles
Lake surface elevation: 6176 feet

You can see down hundreds of feet because the water is so crystal clear.

Collectively they contain about 20% of the world's fresh water. Not too shabby. But there's Lake Baikal in Russia that by itself contains another 20% of the world's fresh water!

New York City
Population: 8,168,000 city proper
................around 22,000,000 metro

New York (city), the largest city in the United States, the home of the United Nations, and the center of global finance, communications, and business. New York City is unusual among cities because of its high residential density, its extraordinarily diverse population, its hundreds of tall office and apartment buildings, its thriving central business district, its extensive public transportation system, and its more than 400 distinct neighborhoods. The city’s concert houses, museums, galleries, and theaters constitute an ensemble of cultural richness rivaled by few cities.

Coral Gables, Florida

These images are architectural treasures found all over the beautiful city of Coral Gables.

The following are the ones I re-discovered which are based on the original Disneyesque international villages as planned by George Merrick in the 1920s, the founder of the city. Fewer than 80 of the 1,000 planned residences were built, but many of them are still standing.

French City Village.
This is one of seven international villages that were built to add variety to the mostly Mediterranean-style city.

http://home.comcast.net/~fpenagos/wsb/media/689008/site1026.jpg

Dutch South African Village.
One of my favorites. It is on Le Jeune Road at Maya Avenue.

http://home.comcast.net/~fpenagos/wsb/media/689008/site1028.jpg

French Country Village.
Located on Hardee Road at San Vicente Street.

http://home.comcast.net/~fpenagos/wsb/media/689008/site1030.jpg

Chinese Village.
An 8 unit village that stands out colorfully from behind a gated wall on Riviera Drive, just South of US 1. A modern day group called The Villagers currently has a project in the works to restore these historic homesites.

http://home.comcast.net/~fpenagos/wsb/media/689008/site1031.jpg

http://home.comcast.net/~fpenagos/wsb/media/689008/site1032.jpg

Colonial Village.
Also known as the Florida Pioneer village (Southern Colonial) stands today on Santa Maria Street bordering the Riviera Country Club golf course.

http://home.comcast.net/~fpenagos/wsb/media/689008/site1033.jpg

http://home.comcast.net/~fpenagos/wsb/media/689008/site1034.jpg

French Normandy Village.
Located on LeJeune and Viscaya.

http://home.comcast.net/~fpenagos/wsb/media/689008/site1035.jpg

http://home.comcast.net/~fpenagos/wsb/media/689008/site1036.jpg

Also standing are the Italian Village, which is spread throughout an area located just south of Bird Road between Granada Boulevard and Riviera Drive.

------The Biblo, who settled the area around 3500, inhabited the area where Savannah is today.
Several thousand years after the Biblo left, the Yamacraws settled here.
Under their leader (at the time), Tomochici, they met the Georgia colony’s first settlers.
On February 12, 1733, James Oglethorpe, the settlers’ leader, was deeded the land by Tomochici in a peaceful transition.
------During the Revolutionary War, Savannah came under the control of the Loyalist and British forces in 17788.
Several attempts were made to liberate the city, including the most famous one, the Siege of Savannah in 1779.
------The port suffered an epidemic of Yellow Fever in 1818, which caused the city to be quarantined.
This scared many ships off, many of which never returned to the port.
This severely damaged the city’s economy.
------Savannah was also the target of General Sherman’s famous “March to the Sea” in 1864.
He, however, decided to spare the city, one of the few cities on any of his famous marches to be spared.
------During the 1930’s-40’s, many of the city’s historic building’s (now under the protection of the Historic District), were destroyed to make room for parking lots.
It was then that a group of young women formed the Historic Savannah Foundation.
In 1966, the downtown area of the city was designated a National Historic District.
In 1979, the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) was founded. The college did not use a centralized campus, but rather it renovated many of the downtown area’s historic building, thus further protecting them from the wrecking ball.
------The city is now a famous tourist destination.
This was solidified by the record-breaking bestselling book, Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil, and the movie of the same name.

The original area that is now Atlanta was Creek and Cherokee Indian territory. White settlement here began after the Creeks and Cherokees were sent off to Oklahoma via "The Trail of Tears". The city was first planned as a terminus for the Western Railroad in 1836. I was meant as the terminus for all lines coming in from Birmingham, Macon, Athens, and Chattanooga. This terminus was originally picked to be Decatur, but citizens in the area wanted it elsewhere, so another spot was picked (where the city is now).
As Terminus' population grew, locals suggested that the city should have a new name. They first wanted to name it after a former governor-then mayor of the city, Wilson Lumpkin. He declined the honor saying that he already had a city and county named after him, but he suggested that the city be named for his daughter, Martha. So, in 1843, Terminus was renamed Marthasville.
The exact origins of the name Atlanta are unknown, but it is known the Chief Engineer of the Georgia Railroad, John E. Thomson, was most likely the one who suggested it. The most popular idea as to how the city got its name is that the word "Atlanta" is a feminization of the word "Atlantic" from the "Western and Atlantic Railroad" In any case, Marthasville became known as Atlanta in 1845, and the city was incorporated under that name in 1847.
Atlanta became famous during the Civil War as a railroad hub for the Confederacy and the starting place of General William Tecumseh Sherman's infamous "March to the Sea" that ended in Savannah in 1864. Later on in the city's history, this very event would be immortalized in Margaret Mitchell's famous novel, Gone With the Wind. After a four month siege on the city by Sherman, Confederate General John Bell Hood ordered his troops to evacuate, which allowed Sherman to enter the city. The city was surrendered to Sherman's forces by then mayor James Calhoun on September 2, 1864. Then, on, September 7, 1864, Sherman ordered the citizens of the city to evacuate before he burned the city. On November 11, 1864, Sherman finally burned the city a started his march for Savannah.
Atlanta was gradually rebuilt itself after the war. It was during this time that it became the South's industrial and commercial center. The headquarters of the troops and services involved with Reconstruction were in McPherson Barracks, later to be known as Ft. McPherson. Atlanta became the fifth and final (so far) city to serve as Georgia's capital.
In the early 1900's, Atlanta was a bustling city filled with automobiles and streetcars going up and down its streets. The city's first major race riot against White prejudice occurred in 1906. That was not the end of the tensions, though. In 1913, Leo Frank, a Jewish man who supervised a factory was tried for raping and murduring a thirteen year old White girl who worked there. After his guilt in the crime was doubted, he had his death sentence commuted, but riots broke out, and a mob lynched Frank in 1915.
During the Great Depression, the city came so close to being bankrupt that the Coca-Cola Company had to bail them up, much as J.P. Morgan once did for the Federal Government in the late 1800's. Franklin D. Roosevelt's first public housing project in the nation was started in the city with the Techwood Homes projects in 1935. WWII brought even more prosperity to Atlanta with the Bell Aircraft Factory being built in Marietta and Ft. McPherson serving as a training and discharging center for troops all over the Southeastern U.S.A. Shortly after the war, the Communicable Diseases Center was founded in 1946. Later, the center would come to be known as "The Centers for Disease Control". This center was established in the old Malaria Control in War Areas building.
Atlanta was a center for the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and some students from some of Atlanta's historically Black colleges as major organizers of the movement held several protests here.. They, for example, held a famous sit-in at one a department store's lunch counter. This incident led to their arrests on October 19, 1960. This arrest helped draw national attention to the Civil Rights Movement. Atlanta's acceptance of the Civil Rights Movement was a lot more successful and peaceful than that of other big cities in the South, like Birmingham. It was this that helped Atlanta earn the title "The City Too Busy to Hate".
In 1990, Atlanta was informed by the IOC that it had the honor of hosting the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games. After this announcement, the city began work on several projects, including the Olympic Stadium that would later become Turner Field. The games were overall a success, only marred by one event, the Centennial Olympic Park Bombing, which led to the death of two people and injured several.
As Atlanta entered the new Millenium, it looks forward to a future of great ness, with a wonderful mayor, a reviving downtown, skyscraper and building boom, and so on with its usual hardworking, go-getter spirit.

The Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta!

SSC- Rate the Westin Peachtree Plaza! (http://skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12558)

Posted by WestinPeachtree there:
----------------------------------------
Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel
723 ft or 220 meters
76 floors
Architect: John Portman & Associates

- Tallest hotel in the world when completed in 1976.
- Tallest hotel in the United States.
- Tallest hotel in the Western Hemisphere.
- One of the top 10 tallest hotels in the world.
- It has 2 360 degree revolving restaurants at the top and a public obervation deck.

This crystalline urban context, which dominates all else, marks the commercial center of Atlanta. The introverted plinth, out of which the hotel rises, establishes a clear boundary between the building and its surroundings. There is now a new connecting level in the upper section of the plinth, where shopping malls create links with the lower levels. The Peachtree Plaza Hotel stands for a hotel conception that aims to create an urban microcosm within the hotel itself; it contains conference rooms, bars, shops, a variety of restaurants and large public atriums - a celebration of hotel life for the guests.

Denali National Park - Alaska

Mount McKinley (aka "Denali"--its original Indian name) is the highest mountain in the U.S., with a height of 20,320 feet (6,194 meters). It has the greatest amount of vertical relief of any mountain in the world.

http://www.toursaver.com/images2/Denali-National-Park-StoneyDome.jpg

Amazing view although I'd guess that greatest vertial relief claim would be disputed by...

A breathtaking State of America

The Great Lakes are a gift that we often take for granted. Don't they all collectively contain half the world's fresh water? Americans (and Canadians) are spoiled in having those suckers.
The Chicago Sun-Times (which I got for free on friday for some reason) had an article about the pact to keep Great Lakes water in the Watershed and said they contain 1/5 of the world's fresh water and 90% of North America's.

Yes, they contain 20% of the world's fresh water.

Here is a shot of the Minnesota coastline of Lake Superior:

Mauna Kea Observatory

The Mauna Kea Observatory is a collection of 12 telescopes perched atop the highest mountain on the big island of Hawaii, Mauna Kea, which is 13,796 ft (4,208m) tall. The observatory contains optical, radio, and infrared telescopes, some of which are arrayed.

All photos are taken by the talented Richard J. Wainscoat.
