Population: 811,000 (2003)
Metropolitan Area: 7,409,000 (2003)

The City and County of San Francisco (population 811,000), is the fourth-largest city in the state
of California, United States, in terms of population. It is a consolidated city-county situated at the
northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula that forms San Francisco Bay. The city-county also includes
the Farallon Islands 27 miles offshore.
The city is the focal point of the San Francisco Bay Area metropolitan area, whose total population is
about 7 million. U.S. census data show that San Francisco has the highest population density of any
city aside from New York City.
The first Europeans to settle in San Francisco were the Spanish, in 1776. The city grew rapidly due to
the California gold rush starting in 1848.
The city was devastated by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, but was rebuilt quickly. The phoenix on
the city's flag represents San Francisco's "rebirth" from the ashes of the fire that resulted from the quake.
Long enjoying a bohemian reputation, the city became a counterculture magnet in the second half of the
20th century. It was a center of the dot-com boom at the end of the century.
Widely recognized landmarks include the San Francisco cable car system, the Golden Gate Bridge and the
Transamerica Pyramid.

X-seed 4000 February 14th, 2003, 11:53 PM Everything looks OK... but to me, it seems a little boxy.
8.5/10
kiku99 February 15th, 2003, 12:28 AM SF skyline is really nice. 9.5/10
Eduardo Lopez February 15th, 2003, 02:25 AM A classic! but not more than a 9/10.
De Snor February 15th, 2003, 09:20 AM absolutly stunning city !! 9/10
renell February 15th, 2003, 11:14 AM a bit boxy but perfectly clustered.. 8
bay_area February 15th, 2003, 09:27 PM I agree that its kinda boxy, the city has the strictest zoning and planning requirements in the nation-its amazing that they even allowed the Pyramid to be built in the first place!
There were 2 1,000-ft. towers proposed in 1999-once it got to the city council-they chopped them down to 4 separate structures and denied all spiral proposals.
Donald Trump has been trying for 15 years to build a 1,000-ft. tower on Market Street.
If San Francisco werent so strict, thered be 3 1,000-footers in the skyline, and thered be 5 more buildings between 700-999 ft.
Sometimes we hate the city council-but theyve protected the waterfront, Golden Gate Park and the public schools have the highest test scores of any big-city in the nation.
Oaronuviss February 16th, 2003, 01:14 AM Always liked San Fran.
8.5
LaVitae'Bella February 16th, 2003, 01:23 AM Beautiful pics and stunning skyline! 9/10!
PS:where are the hills??
bay_area February 16th, 2003, 09:57 AM The votes average between 8.5-9.0, thats pretty cool IMO
Wu-Gambino February 18th, 2003, 02:19 AM I love SF! 9
SKYLINEPIGEON February 18th, 2003, 09:38 AM the city council maybe is afraid the 1000 footers would ruin the city beauty, cause no doubt san francisco is one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in north america
ill give it a 9.0 very generous of me indeed
SteelCity32 February 18th, 2003, 01:49 PM nice. Interesting, not any pics of a closer angle?
8/10
BGT February 19th, 2003, 03:44 AM 9/10 awesome Skyscrapers are everywhere in San Francisco
Francis20 February 19th, 2003, 11:36 AM wow! amazing SF. most US Cities tho have boxy skyscrapers.
but since you said it's about the council zoning restrictions, then so be it.
not so beautiful highrises but they were beautifully clustered.
a friend of mine who knows my interest on skyscrapers just gave me a big poster of skyscraper...and guess wat? it's SF!!! It's a very nice and very clear aerial with the bridge on the background. i dunno if it is already a much used aerial.
btw, i gave it a 9!
Ptarmigan February 20th, 2003, 04:56 AM Very impressive skyline. 9.5/10. I wished it had more buildings though, prefably taller ones.
Dydd February 22nd, 2003, 06:14 PM :dizzy: Great trip!!!!:) 8.5
DrumCorpsAlum February 22nd, 2003, 08:36 PM San Fran's skyline is a great one by itself, especially with suck a landmark as the TAP, but enhanced by the water of the bay, the hills, and the mountains (larger hills) in the background, it boosts the skyline up to a 9/10.
nostyle March 1st, 2003, 02:49 AM I know some people would say this is a top 5 american skyline, but I say it's top 10 at best. Still a great skyline, even if I think slightly less of it than some. 9.
CtrlAltDel March 1st, 2003, 05:24 AM I guess I must be the only one that thinks its overly brown and concrete. Its a beautiful city no doubt, situated very nicely, and the TA is a standout, but the skyline itself I don't care for at all. 6.5/10
AndrewC March 1st, 2003, 04:12 PM One of Americas most recognisable and beautiful cities 9/10
Love the Bank of America
bay_area March 1st, 2003, 10:14 PM "Its easier to build a 1,000-ft tall snowman in Saudi Arabia than it is to get a permit to build anything in San Francisco"-Donald Trump
The guy brought a team of high priced lawyers to city hall to coerce the city council to permit his 1,100ft. tall Trump Pacific Tower( back in 98) and he and his lawyers were basically chewed up and spit out by SF city officials-many of us were so pissed.
nostyle and crtaltdel,
i agree the skyline could be more colorful and taller, but fortunately unlike many cities-we have more going for us than a skyline.
ganjavih March 2nd, 2003, 02:04 AM You're right bay_area... I gave the skyline a 7.5 but the city itself is a 10 all the way! One of my faves in America!
Thecityismine March 17th, 2003, 12:30 AM If it only were taller. 8/10

So true.....I'd much rather live in SF with the current skyline than most asian cities which really just build for height. Look at most British cities......they lack world class 'skylines' but London, Manchester, Birmingham etc..are some of the greatest cities in the world.
tocoto June 9th, 2003, 02:00 AM The only way a 1000 footer will get built in SF is if there is one built in San Jose or Oakland first. A very nice skyline but the city is better than the skyline. Fantastic setting as well. 9/10
Thecityismine June 9th, 2003, 02:36 AM I also forgot to add, I might go to SFSU soon. I heard it's not a party school, but hey it's the bay area, and I sure want so my beloved Raiders play. Go Raiders!
Evergrey June 12th, 2003, 12:57 AM 5.5
San Fran is a great and beautiful city with amazing natural assets, but I really find its skyline to be rather repulsive... there is great density... but it's really beige/brown, boxy, boring and there's no great height... plus I dislike the 2 most famous skyscrapers... Bank of America with its gaudy bay windows and the pyramid... which having an interesting shape... is still that ugly beige
fox1 July 1st, 2003, 08:28 AM i think the city has many simple towers. it is impressive for its bulk and of course natural surroundings.

Is such a beautiful city, but its skyline lets it down just a tad. Has a nice enough form and density, although lacking in height. It seems the majority of buildings date from decades ago and not much has been happening since (I assume because of local government behaviour :bash: ) Anyway, needs a new focal point as the TA tower is a bit too dominating on the skyline and is "yesterdays news."

Anyway, I'll give SF 9.5. I just love it.
sky vs sky March 11th, 2004, 11:31 AM Hi bay_area, for some reason I couldn't open your piccies but I've got a good memory and some great photos of your lovely town.
Mate, I give it 9! It's got interesting shapes, amazing geography, great scope, height and the in my books the most important element in a great city...CHARACTER!
You listed the population as 811 000. I'm comfortable with that. SF seems like a big city in the CBD, but once out of it, not very big, without urban sprwal, with little high density housing like LA.....plus you've got some geographical boundaries such as the bay, ocean, hills and National Parks............so where the heck do you get another 6.7 million in the metro/burbs. Do you count Oakland? Don't know what it's pop. is but its only a fraction of SF. Do you count Marin County and stretching it to the towns of San Jose to the South or Sonoma to the North which are both about an hour away? Even if you do I still can't see where all those 7.5 million buggers live.
7.5 million is like our Melbourne and Sydney blended together.....huge!
Just help an ignorant ol' Aussie out here and explain to me...how?
apart from that old boy you've got one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Unlike other metro in the United States, the San Francisco Bay Area Metro is not dominated by one big city. The San Francisco Bay Area has three major cities, San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose. San Jose is the biggest of the three by land and population with more than 1,000,000+. San Francisco second with a population of 700,000+. Oakland last with a population of 400,000+. All three cities work with each other, San Jose, the capital of the Silicon Valley, Oakland, with the Port of Oakland, and S.F., the financial & culture center. The San Francisco Bay Area is not named after San Francisco, the city; it’s actually named after the San Francisco Bay, which is the body of water. Look for a San Francisco Bay Area map and you’ll see what I mean. You mentioned the hills as boundaries for sprawl, I think of the as hills that blocks your view of the sprawl. There’s an endless sprawl in the east, but you have to get over the hills before you get there. :)
sean storm November 19th, 2004, 08:24 PM ^ clarification: SF city proper has a population of about 750,000 in 2003. the port city of Oakland across the bay has about 400,000, not 100,000. San Jose, the heart of silicon valley, is the largest city in the bay area with over 900,000. the official CMSA of the greater bay area is over 7 million, although the continuous urban development that rings the immediate bay is more like 6 million.
notice the white built-up areas ringing the bay in this satellite image - this is what is defined as the SF bay area:
http://landsat.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/Browse/Full_Scenes/SanFran.JPG
in this image, you can clearly see how natural barriers like water, hills, and mountains determine the shape of urban development.
sean storm November 19th, 2004, 08:35 PM san francisco's skyline can be stunning and a bit disappointing at the same time. the assets are obvious - a famous landmark skyscraper, impressive bulk/density, near perfect layout, and gorgeous setting. but given the city's ludicrously anal approach to zoning and planning, the financial district has more or less become a plateau of buildings between 400-600 ft. despite the two dominant towers poking through the rest, the skyline looks somewhat stunted. many buildings are bland in appearance but fortunately i think there are few buildings that look tacky. the highrise architecture is pretty simple and subdued. with all the new condo developments in rincon hill and the new transbay area proposal the skyline will improve drastically, but we won't see results for another 10-15 years.
the best view of the skyline is from the south looking north on potrero hill, as you get the most complete panoramic view of the skyline facing dead on. i will post pictures soon. :)
superchan7 November 23rd, 2004, 03:17 AM Classic. Chicago, SF, and NY are the American players.
9/10 for the setting, skyscrapers, bridges, and the dirtier sections of the city.

i_am_hydrogen December 9th, 2004, 02:00 PM 8.5/10--I have a soft spot for SF--love that city.
San Fran's skyline is a little low, but for a skyline of that size, its density is remarkable. The density is most stunning at street level. Plus, the hilly topography creates some very unique views of the skyline. I'd love to see it get a few more post-modern buildings in there as well. But overall, SF is such a tight city, it more than makes up for these minor flaws in its skyline.

Nouvellecosse June 6th, 2005, 11:37 AM I love San Francisco. The whole idea of San Francisco. My favorite skyscraper is the trans-am pyramid. But unlike some cities, San Franciso isn't about its skyline. It's so much more than that. It's about its neighbourhoods, character, culture, its incredible setting and colourful history. It represents freedom and individuality like no place else on earth. Too many supertalls would take the focus away from that. The skyline is really just the icing on the cake.

I think the GGB is just slightly overrated too, but I guess that doesn't count as skyline.
Blue_Sky November 2nd, 2005, 04:39 AM 8.5/10
Daniel1 November 20th, 2005, 11:50 AM San Francisco is beautiful. However, most of the beauty of the city comes from its fantastic location and natural surroundings, and not its skyline. On the whole, San Francisco has been too timid architecturally, and a bevy of laws and ordinances has made interesting and innovative development too difficult. For the skyline, because it should be larger, more interesting, and less tan, 7.5/10. (I still think SF is a wonderful city, but we're rating skylines here.)

usermel June 14th, 2006, 10:23 PM Clearly anyone who gives San Francisco a score lower than a 8, is looking at its skyline with lying eyes. I have noticed people are being a bit personal when voting on cities. This is an opinion poll however so you have to give people the benefit of the doubt.
I try to do so but, I feel people arent giving fair scores. At times only becuase they dont like a city and they never been there. Other times because they have visited a city and didnt like it there.
GOD IS GOOD!

FROM LOS ANGELES June 23rd, 2006, 12:03 AM 24/7, dense, little bit of deadzones, ok height, a lot of new development, what else can someone ask for? Well, SF is got that and more, it is truly one of America's greatest skyline. I love this skylinealthough people form SF are always saying it is better than LA's. I hope SF gets the Trans Bay buildings, that would make the skyline one of the best anywhere. SF has an impressive density, I give it a 10/10.

That isn't the Golden Gate Bridge, it's the Bay Bridge which was built around the same time. Despite being considerably large than the GGB, it is less known and really should deserve more credit.

festiboi January 1st, 2007, 01:58 AM "9"
It's an American classic. A lot of the main prominent buildings are older and boxy, but there's enough difference in shapes of other buildings to break it up. The Transamerica Pyramid is an instant icon and boosts the look of the city. It's become a symbol of San Fran. I wish the Bank of America were a different colour instead of plain ol' black, because even though it's a 60's era box, I find it attractive. It just looks too dreary in a city like SF. I'm actually glad they stopped large high rise developments in this city, just to preserve the charm and character of it. The harbour is gorgeous, and the bridges I can't even begin to decribe how amazing they are in person. Best skyline in California

gladisimo January 3rd, 2007, 05:07 PM Excellent, very representative of an American city. Though it lacks in diversity, the skyscrapers come together VERY well to create an excellent skyline. IMO, the best in the USA after the big two. 9.5

Dr Drums April 13th, 2007, 12:21 AM The problem with most US skylines relies in the aspect they´re all boxy and brown or grey, not colorful at all, so that makes them a bit boring visually, I hope this improves in the future at least a little bit, by this I don´t meen that arquitecture designs aren´t excelent, it´s just they´re too practical in my opinion.

7/10
krudmonk June 15th, 2007, 06:24 PM It's good now but One Rincon is way out of place so the new developments make me wary. The Pyramid makes the skyline and it's about to be dwarfed. 8/10
SCWTC4 June 24th, 2007, 10:31 PM 9/10 for me

Cojapo July 11th, 2007, 03:17 AM I am watching the all star game and they have showed a tower being built near the ball park, away from the down town cluster. Anyone know what is? And pics?
kevin22 July 12th, 2007, 10:41 PM wow san fransisco is really dense
ElVoltageDR July 13th, 2007, 12:20 AM 9.5- This great skyline doesn't get as much exposure as some other American cities. Maybe that is because I live all the way in the East (in NYC) or because I my-self haven't really taken the time to look at it, but this is a great looking skyline.
