Plane in Indonesian city, at least 60 feared dead

Jakarta, Sept 5 (AP):An Indonesian jetliner crashed into a residential neighbourhood in the city of Medan one minute after takeoff today and burst into flames, killing at least 60 people, witnesses said.

The plane was carrying at least 109 people, Transport Minister Hatta Radjasa said, adding that it was too early to say whether anyone survived or how many, if any, perished on the ground.

The Boeing 737 was operated by Mandala, a low-cost carrier, and was heading to Jakarta when it crashed into a crowded housing complex, Rizal, a witness, told Metro television station.

Syahrial Anas, a doctor who was overseeing the removal of charred bodies, said at least 60 people were killed.

"We're having a hard time getting to the bodies, because of the heat," he told The Associated Press, adding that dozens of ambulances and firefighters were heading to the scene in heavy traffic.

The airport in Medan, the largest city on Sumatra island, is close to the center of town and is surrounded by densely populated residential areas

This is really bad.

But just a suggestion for you guys.

If you fly, try get the seat on the back row. Usually when crash accident happens, the back seats passengers are mostly safe.

In Mandala crashed, 6 people are safe because they sat in the back row. It was also happened with the lion air victims. Thats why when i book my seat, i asked them to get me on the back row seats.

cheers

Wow, the location for the airport is really scary. They need to move the airport to a more secluded area. Imagine if the plane was a Jumbo 747.

That plan has been long overdue since now. I wonder if someone got the karma right now by delaying kuala namu construction. I am not going to say who..but you all know who.

Anyway, the three biggest concern that i suspect are Engine failure, overweight and some structure failure (especially on the wing tip).

Lets just wait and see what KNKT will say on their investigation.

cheers

In 1996 I flew a nonstop Amsterdam-Medan flight with an MD11(350 passengers) Garuda Indonesia.

When they were doing the aproach/landing procedure we could clearly see this street passing under us.

I was shocked that they constructed buildings in close proximity of the runway.

I'm afraid that the pilot could have started the trust reverser by accident.

A "stall" is possible and with little space left for correction manouvers ....

Luggage overweight could also be a factor....

Let's wait the official investigation.

From the television, i could see the ILS is damaged and the surrounding fence on the 32 Runway is also damaged. So my prediction is the plane never went up, thus it hit the fence and trashed the housing complex.

Kata saksi-saksi. Mereka melihat kapal take-off dan berada diudara.

So sad about this accident, but I'm amazed how can somebody survived on an accident like this. even though you seat on the back, you are still inside the plane, and still got in the fire when the plane exploded. If in case the tail was seperated immediately when the plane hit the ground, these ppl still fall from a high latitude and in fast velocity.

Not sultan, but governor and former governor.

When the plane hit the fence, i suspect it never went up. So the attitude was not that high. The point of why sitting on the back is safer because when the plane strucked, the nose of the plane hit first then the middle bodyplane, before it finally stopped. Therefore the back seats are pretty much safe and have a huge space to escape, before the plane is on flame.

Subject: Requiem Natalia mhafiizhfs

Untuk seorang teman, dan adikku yang tercinta….

Natsy teman2 memanggilmu, tapi saya tetap panngil dia
Natalia, … sekitar sebulan

menolong, entah berapa kali
Natalia membantu Departemen kalau ada acara…. Bagian
penerimaan tamu, MC, dll….
Departemen. Makanya ia pun
menjadi salah satu asisten kesayangan kami (karyawan
DIE).

Ketika dia lulus kuliah, ketika mimpi sudah dirajut,
Natalia mengajukan diri
untuk mengabdi di Departemen, dengan melamar beasiswa
Pasca FEUI.
menggapai cita-citanya
yang lebih tinggi di luar negeri. Akhirnya waktunya
pun tiba Natalia terpilih
sebagai penerima beasiswa Total dari Pem. Perancis,
mau/mampu mendapatkan
beasiswa ke sana. Perancis? hmm…. mungkin bukan negara
tujuan favorit asisten IE
untuk mencari beasiswa, tetapi keteguhan hatinya
menetapkan demikian.

Tibalah masanya sebelum ia berangkat ke Perancis,
Natalia ijin ke saya mau
pulang ke Medan untuk berpamitan. Hari Senin itu,
ketika di bandara sebelum
berangkat, saya sempat meneleponnya sekitar jam 9
menandatangani ikatan dinasnya
sebelum berangkat tugas belajar ke Perancis.

“Wah… Mas disini lagi banyak ‘mafia’ nih..” katanya….
Saya menangkap nada bicara
untuknya…………..

Natalia, terima kasih telah menunjukkan kepada kami
apa itu ‘kasih sayang
sejati’ pada semua orang di Departemen IE.

Selamat jalan teman…. Semoga cita-citamu akan
diteruskan oleh adik-adik kita .

Selamat jalan Natalia…

Its only a rumour. Those newspapers SHOULD NOT speculate on what the cause of this accident. Until the KNKT, Boeing and American investigators finished their blackbox and plane investigation.

Two tons of durian is a lot and will ramp the cargo space quite tight. I dont think this is the case because on Monday, it was the end of long weekend holiday. Therefore, the passengers would bring heavy and many baggages.

In 1997, right after the crash of GA A-300 in Medan, the central government promised to resume the construction of Kuala Namu airport but it was delayed several months after due to crisis in Indonesia. Now, 8 years later, the crash of Mandala into the residential neighborhood at the end of the runway should remind the central government again to seriously put some effort into moving Polonia out to Kuala Namu.

Polonia was built in the early 1900 by a group of Polish workers during the Dutch Administration. Hence, the name is Polonia. The location of this airport has always been right in the city even during its early days. One end of the landing approach is from the city and the other is from the mountainous Brastagi plateau. I guess during its early days when aircrafts were only built in a smaller size, this location was fine. But now with B747 and all the wide bodies, this location is just bad for airport.

in 1979, GA F-28 crashed into the mountain during its landing approach, 18 years later the GA A-300 crashed also into the mountain during its landing approach. 4 days ago, Mandala crashed during the aborted take off - this latest one may not have been due to the location of the airport, but the devastation to the residential neighborhood again confirms that Polonia airport at its current location is no longer adequate to cater for all the air traffic in and out of the 3rd biggest city in Indonesia.

David-80
September 9th, 2005, 01:12 PM
Yeah, you right, Polonia is a mess. Its one of the busiest airport in Indonesia but yet its still viewed as the worst airport services in Indonesia. When you wait for your plane in the boarding room, you will see what I mean. Even on the check-in counter.

Argh its really a shame for Medan, a city with a great vibrant and largest economy in sumatera.

cheers

Looking from the one that Mac's posted, it shows that the plane might hit the small durian vendor just across the airport. Notice the container box of coca cola beside the durian. I think its the vendor of es durian :P
