View Full Version : Symi Island - Bringing Greeks and Turks closer
Geroplatanos September 5th, 2005, 04:12 PM Well here is a short photo presentation of the beautiful island of Symi .
After the play in greek and turkish television of the very popular TV serial - love story of Nazli and Nikos - (some episodes of the serial were filmed in the island ) the island has become more attractive to many new visitors who were amazed by the beauty of this quite uknown island.
ΣΥΜΗ - SYMI
Symi is located in the Southern Dodecanese, north of Rhodes and close to the coast of south-west Turkey.
Symi is just over 13 km north/south and about 8 km east/west with an area of some 68 square km.
http://www.symivisitor.com/greekisl.jpg
Symi is divided into distinctive areas - Yialos is the main harbour. Chorio, literally 'village', is the top town. Pedi Bay is the valley below Chorio, south of Yialos. Nimborios is the bay and settlement to the north of Yialos. There is a small settlement at Marathounda and a major Monastery complex at Panormitis. The interior, a forested plateau with many spectacular views, can be visited by car or bike on the recently refurbished road from Symi town to Panormitis. There are also many interesting walks and guided walks can be arranged through tour operators in Yialos or walking guides can be purchased from the Symi visitor office.
SHort historical reference
Symi's recorded history goes back as far as the Trojan Wars (1120 BC) and its past is chequered, with a series of invaders, beginning with the Dorians from the Pelponnese (6th-7th century), the Romans, some two or three hundred years afterwards, the Turks (1522-1912) and the Italians (from 1912 until World War 2). Symi then became a strategically important island and was subsequently invaded - and bombed - by both the Axis and the Allies during each others' occupations. Finally, in 1947, Symi along with the rest of the Dodecanese islands became part of the Greek nation. At its height - before the Italian occupation - Symi was a thriving island with a population of more than 22,000. It was renowned for its boat-building, sponge-fishing, wine-making, its wood-carvers and icon-painters and the outstanding educational quality of its schools.

what;s with Datsa?is there a relation with the island of Symi?
Reaper-strain October 30th, 2007, 11:58 PM Not sure, but many Turkish day-tripers take the boat from there to Simi. Looks very close to the island, so i wondered if it would be as pretty as the Turks said. However it looks a bit new and bland. The bazaar sounds fun though. As the thread title says, this island definitely brings Greeks and Turks together.
Truva November 2nd, 2007, 09:18 PM The island is very close to Datca.Never heard of this island. There are too many in the Agean Sea.I also want visit the island LESBOS.Anyways Agean Sea is nice :) .

ELLIN November 2nd, 2007, 10:41 PM WOW!!
Amazing place of Greece,i knew about this island as really beautifull but this photos makes me ready for visit it this summer!!
Well, neighbours Turkish im really happy that you start to enjoy some places of Greece....some that are really close to you...but i think is time to start exploring Greece more....there are more than 100.000 Greeks going to Turkey and Istanbull every year, and the number is much bigger if you put the visits from the greeks of the east Aegean islands to Turkey...on the other hand you are so many millions and they visit Greece only 40.000 turkish a year...I think it is time to visit Greece more and more,it is not logical to have more than 600.000 americans every year and less than 40.000 from our big neighbour......it is also a way to improve our relationships and realize that Greeks and Turkish can be civilized and friends for ever..History made us to feel hate bettwen us,lets meet ourselves to see that we have a fake opinion ...
ps.....we are both really agressive and more than the accepted proud patriots....i think this is what make us argue....actually this similarity of proud and agressive and addicted way of supporting our countries make sometimes the 2 nations come in argue.....for one more time lets the others fight for us.....everyone knows the greeks and turks like enemies.....I hate that

Istanbullu November 3rd, 2007, 05:48 AM I know that Santorini is quite popular in Turkey. Atlas Jet also started flights to this island last year...
Most popular places for Turkish tourists are France(Paris), Italy, Czech Republic(Prague), Egypt(Pyramids) and Dubai(Shopping)...
I believe Greece will also become increasingly popular as the number of cruises between Turkey and Greek islands increase...

Doukan November 4th, 2007, 12:10 AM is Kosebasi a Turkish restaurant??
YES!
ELLIN November 4th, 2007, 02:04 PM Yes,Kosebasi is turkish,Im going there often,it is a little bit pricey, and i believe that you can find much better turkish cuisine, but if you eat there you would certainly like to repeat it.....
I think 30-40 euros per person for a nice Kembap and Imam is a lot....i know some other turkish restaurants as Tike at Kifisia which are less expensive....

Istanbullu we have more than 2000 islands with blue waters and a country with a mainland full of attractions (including ottoman mosques which by the way are tottaly renovated) and we have from you only 40000 visitors a year....
By the way Greeks they love Istanbul,i havent seen a greek that have visit this city or west coast of Turkey and have somethign negative to say....what is really suprise me is that most of people are enthousiastic from the positive and welcoming behaviour from the turkish, and how much they have changed their minds about them......and this is the way to improve also our relations .
One similarity we have(latest anouncements of Greek organization of tourism),
are that both, greek and turkish are spending much more money per person on their travelling than any other nation especially in Europe...only the Russians and the Chineze people are spending more.....:lol::lol:
Regarding me when im visiting a country i like to go to the best places and buy the most expensive i can afford...other countries that seems richer than us,like Germany ,Britain etc their people is like pour,a salad ,a cheap souvenir and back to their homes
I think when it comes the time to have visitors over a million from both sides,we will not need more rich north europeans:lol:
Sodnal November 4th, 2007, 08:34 PM It's too bad the Turks have prevented Cypriot ships and aircraft from landing in Constantinople-violating their prior agreement with the European Union. The potential for growth in the eastern Med region is being stymied by this sort of foolishness. :ohno:
ELLIN November 4th, 2007, 11:13 PM ok...but we are not disgussing politics here...not ruin every greek-turkish forum due to the politics....

Greek islands are definately on my must visit list...
btw if you look at the Turkish members of SSC, you'll see that some of them visited Greece once or twice... Ofcourse the overall figures doesn't reflect this... btw I don't see much advertisements about Greece in Turkey. Maybe Greek tour operators should focus more on here.
Greece - especially the islands, is mostly presented here as a honeymoon destination. and ofcourse this a limiting element...

On the other hand there are many turkish advertisements in Greece.....and i can say they are really beautifull....
I wouldnt say that greek islands is for honeymoon only...some they are not....Santorini is definetely for me the best honeymoon destination worldwide.....Mykonos is more a nightlife-beach destination than a place for honeymoon.....
I think as soon as the economic growth of Turkey continue they will be many more people able to travel, and im certain that in 5-10 years both countries will have really strong economic and tourist relations
(finansbank-NBG,KOH-marine falirou,Aegean bank)......
