Ive always liked the simplistic design of this 500m giant which is finally uc in Shanghai.
It will eventually reach 101 storeys/492m.

Nice diagram Cul, except the circle at the top has been truncated because of its resemblance to the Japanese flag, or so it's been said.

Whatever the reason this is the design now. Still sensational though.

thanks orilious, ill amend design.it was going to have an enormous observation bridge which would of been worlds highest outdoor ob deck @ 430m., but i think its been shelved due to impending high winds.

I love that design too.

I wonder how long after the cutout's been compleated will it be before some joker tries to fly a light plane through the hole, it would be pretty tempting....

Marcanadian
September 6th, 2005, 09:05 PM
It doesnt look as good cut off like that. Cause wasnt the bridge gonna be suspended in the circle?

CULWULLA
September 7th, 2005, 07:37 AM
the observation bridge has been canned due to probable high winds. The hole at SWFC top is approx 45m wide. A 747 wing span is approx 64m..
ouch

Nice to see my work travels far.

I personally like the current version of the hole. It ooks like a rising sun, to me at least.

And Cul, the corners curve downward, they aren't angled (If that makes sense).

September 9th, 2005, 12:06 PM
Without the 'Rising Sun' (nice analogy STR) it looks like a sleeker version of Freedom Tower. I personally like it with the sun. Looks like an alien obelisk and being a bit of a Sci-Fi nut I obviously dig it.

What? The hole was the whole reason I liked the tower so much. Now it looks. . .so boring. Ugh.

According to forumer Jue, it was a practical joke. . . do we have any official sources on this?

looks like a giant bottle opener. Easily my fav supertall going up. I love this building and it's great that it is finally going up. I agree with most, the original design (the hole) is probably a touch better. Either way this building rocks hard. Will this be tallest to roof when completed??

STR
October 5th, 2005, 07:24 PM
They DID change the hole and they've put up lots of posters of it too.

http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/633/915396411284994223oo.jpg

They killed it. They took one of the best designs to come out of postmodernism and they killed it.

How many design changes is this frikken tower going through?

Nice diagram Cul, except the circle at the top has been truncated because of its resemblance to the Japanese flag, or so it's been said.Yes, the original circle in the design of SWFC was abandoned due to its resemblance to the Japanese flag re: the rising sun:

It's very sad that they've changed the design over such a trivial reason, which isn't really all that acurate to the Japanese flag.

Damn it, I loved that circular hole. I'm looking at the original renderings and plans from a 1997 book on Kohn Pederson Fox's works and it was perfect then. I had always preferred the original SWFC design to Kingdom Centre - now I don't. At least the aperture at the top of the Kingdom Centre has curves.

I know this won't make sense to anyone else BUT... with that 600+ one there, SWFC looks like it makes more sense.

I loved the old circular design of SWFC, and since they changed it to the square, it just looks a little odd... but with the other one in the background, it makes SWFC look bolder (even though it's smaller....)

//end pointless ramble...

Eureka!

Never seen that 600m+ tower.

It's strangely unremarkable.

Just doesn't look 'right' for Pudong.

The asymmetric shape clashes with the SWFC, which itself is a shadow of it's original design.

Besides, why build a 650m building if you are not going to make it world's tallest?

In that way this new proposal is like the SWFC itself - a great tower with the singular misfortune of living in era of even greater towers.

Well so far for Country of size we still have taller buildings than Japan, with their population times 6 of ours or something.

Yet Tokyo is too cool for super-talls etc.. So much going action on the ground that makes up for heights. (Night life, culture, hipsters, big population, and other stuff)

^^ Probably a really dumb one, but why would one favour steel over concrete? Cost/weight? Just wondering cos in oz, very little seems to be done on steel, its all concrete, whereas in London it seems to be the opposite - lots of steel, not so much concrete? then you have this and burj for example that have half half....?

I saw an interesting documentary on Shanghai on Foxtel yesterday and my Grandparent's house. It was really interesting.
It explained how Pudong is literally all mud which complicates the contstruction of these buildings. And they have to make an air tight shaft so the water in the mud can't get in. And for the typhoons Shanghai has they had to add the hole so the wind travels through the building and not against it.
And they changed the design of the hole into a trapezoidal shape because there was some commotion that the circular shape looked too much like the Japanese flag.

Anyway if you have Foxtel and you want to see the program it is called Man Made Marvels and it is on Tuesday on the Discovery Channel I believe.

Fire halts Shanghai WFC construction

From "KHL World Construction Week".......

Editor: Richard High

A fire at the Mori Building Co.'s 101 storey Shanghai World Financial Center (SWFC) has stopped work on what will be the world’s second-tallest skyscraper once completed in 2008.

The blaze started on the 26th floor of the building in Shanghai's financial district at about 4:30 pm local time Wednesday 14 July, according to a spokesman quoted by local press agencies.

At the time the spokesman said he did not know if there had been any injuries or how long construction could be delayed.

Smoke could still be seen emanating from the building at 6 pm local time. Firefighter on the scene were quoted as saying the blaze had been brought under control, while ambulance crews arriving at 5 pm said they had not had to treat any injuries.

Witnesses said smoke was seen coming from the building at 4.40 pm, with police and firemen arriving about 10 minutes later.

Mori Building, Japan's biggest private real-estate developer, is investing YEN 105 billion (US$ 888 million) constructing China’s tallest building. Construction was halted in 1997 because of the Asian financial crisis and in 2005 political tensions over Japan’s occupation of China in World War II led to the removal of a circular hole from designs of the building's apex amid concerns it resembled the Japanese flag.

yes the circular hole would have looked more spectacular.
that view is from ob deck of jiin mao which is 350m high.
half a km high tower.
this was supposed to be worlds tallest back in 1997. at 460m.
but it was shelved for a decade. now at 492m its currently 3rd tallest and thats as high as it wil get as there are now a dozen projects uc that will eclipse it.
quite amazing really

Bird's-eye view 100 floors up

THE world's highest observation deck - located on the 100th floor of China's tallest skyscraper - is about to open to the public.

The sightseeing spot is 474m above the ground in the Shanghai World Financial Centre. It opens on Saturday.

Sightseers who want a bird's-eye view of the city will have to pay $25 each for the experience.

The building, finished earlier this year but not yet open to the public, has 101 floors for a total height of 492m, making it the tallest in China.

As well as the observation deck, the building will also have a luxury hotel, shops and 70 floors of office space.

Until now, the highest similar venue has been the Sky Pod of the CN Tower in Toronto at 447m high.

this is worth a look. a timeline of constrction
