Muse February 15th, 2003, 09:00 AM Previously the Koala Motor Inn on Oxford Street in Darlinghurst, Sydney, work has already begun turning this into Monument Apartments with 191 apartments in total pver 16 levels. Already 1/3 of the 191 apartments have been pre-commited.
Work has already begun by Multiplex guttering the upper most levels.
The Koala Motor Inn:

Melbourne architectural firm Woods Marsh was awarded the contract for the conversion. The fin will be coloured in bronze glass, the uppermost floors will have tinted green glass and the low-mid rise floors will be tinted silver. Woods Marsh will also provide sculptures for the foyer areas.
The bottom 2 levels will be commercial. At street level, there will be stores, and above those will be offices.

Fabian April 24th, 2003, 11:17 PM Thanks for informing us museumb. It's a very promising development indeed. It will certainly help revive that part of Oxford St.
Muse April 25th, 2003, 04:30 AM kewl Fabian :)

Muse May 11th, 2003, 11:02 AM Today I checked out the Monument site and there is blue metal framing covering almost the whole of the ex-Koala Motor Inn. This is virtually from the bottom to the top.
The framing is on the northern, eastern & western sides. I guess blue mesh will eventually cover the blue framing.
Time will tell.

Bulwara June 29th, 2003, 01:38 PM Blue mesh hey?
Perhaps pink would have been more appropriate :D
Fabian June 29th, 2003, 10:08 PM It looks weird with the blue mesh. I wonder why they picked it over green.
CULWULLA June 30th, 2003, 01:16 AM FAB, the green mesh tends to 'clash" with workers shorts!lol
heres a pic i took back a couple of weeks from Westfield Towers.
it also shows Ivy at top.

Fabian September 29th, 2003, 10:50 PM The building in front blocking the tower makes it look smaller.

Muse November 23rd, 2004, 12:55 AM Well, the scaffolding is down and so is the crane.
The fin is brown and not gold (funny that). Similar colour to the Carlton @ Parramatta.
The taller back section is rather Legoland but still an improvement to the old Koala Motor Inn (how could it not be!!).
Possibly it will look better when residents are in.
CULWULLA November 29th, 2004, 04:19 AM wow, very impressed with this one! its just about completed! only stuff at podium level to go.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v158/culwulla/monumentnov29.jpg
lots of different types of finishes. make sure you check it out.

MILIUX November 29th, 2004, 04:34 AM Wow. I like the black glass.
Very nice!
papervagina November 29th, 2004, 06:40 AM I think it looks awful; your shots make it look better than it really is. The brown glass looks terribly dated and the aqua box on top looks like it was just plonked there as an afterthought - kind of like a second story weatherboard extension to a western suburbs redbrick number. It's a pity: I like a good box on a roof, but this one just doesn't seem right.
The mobile phone things on the roof look a bit silly, too... when will phone companies learn to make these things look less offensive?!
CULWULLA November 29th, 2004, 11:08 AM i think my shots dont justify it. its much better in real life. such a landmark now in that aprt of tower. he developers have done well.
OneMelbGuy December 5th, 2004, 03:05 PM It's just a big sweatbox. Ugh! Stupid. The Green equivalent of a Mosman housewife's 4WD.
Mephisto December 5th, 2004, 03:36 PM I really like it!
Brizer December 6th, 2004, 01:41 AM It's a monumental improvement on what was there for the past 30 years.
finn December 6th, 2004, 03:00 AM ^^Absolutely! Oxford Koala was beyond atrocious.
Vitriol December 6th, 2004, 03:40 AM But what's with the green fibroglass look? "Hothouses" were so yesterday!
fro December 6th, 2004, 06:49 AM Hmmm... drove past this one on Saturday night. Very impressive form, with that elliptical shape. The pedestrian level shop fronts are nice too. A really good outcome for a prominent site.
Not sure about the green sheeting though Vitirol...
CULWULLA March 14th, 2005, 12:20 AM not sure if anyone has seen this but theres a pool as part of wall.
looks very c00l!
