Is Baguio City still refreshingly cool? I heard that it's getting warmer each year, probably due to global warming.

janchiz
September 11th, 2005, 07:10 PM
Yes to warmer and another yes to getting more and more crowded. I still remember when I was in college (1989 - 1993), when the main route for jeepneys to the main drag run through Session Rd. Five years later or more, the route was changed into Harrison Rd and the ugly-looking overpasses also grew in number because of the congestion in Session Rd and the traffic is ruining the reputation of Baguio as a summer capital due to the heavy traffic. Two years ago, there were plans to widen the route because they were faced with the same problem. Infact the drop off points for big buses coming from outside Baguio is situated quite far from Session Rd and the bus stations near BCF only cater for picking up passengers bound to different places.

I used to love Baguio City because it is more laid back than Manila, however, the place is also moving towards being at par with Manila lifestyle. Thanks to SM, who brings the new mid-range fashion and the place as becoming more and more crowded due to many students and better employment opportunities compared to other cities in the North. Session Rd used to be dead by 10pm, but now, the road (including adjacent roads) are becoming more and more sleepless. Burnham park has also become a seedy place. I can only think of one place which did not change so much... Camp John Hay... apart from the new buildings to cater for the wants and needs of the wealthy individuals for a posh place to live in while they are in the city. The place still looks immaculate to satisfy the standards of the elites.

Baguio City nowadays looks more like the 80s in Manila. So, if you can imagine how Manila looks like in the 80s, the situation is roughly the same. The signs of 'progress' (if I can call that way) are evident in the city.

My last and only trip to Baguio was in 2003 too for a field trip in school. The best thing about it would be the climate, if only the whole Philppines is as cool as Baguio :) The worst thing about it would be urbanization ... most of the scenic spots are not really that scenic anymore

I agree. :)
When we went boatriding at Burnham Park, I fear that the boat we rode on would sink because the water on the park was as clear as mud and you could really see the trash floating. :(

The place where Hyatt Hotel collapsed, have they built anything on it? If so, what?

I am quite supersititious about Baguio because each time it gets more and more modern, it purges itself. For example, the successive fires of the former Pines Hotel and then the earthquake that caused the collapse of Hyatt Hotel and other establishments. The mountains are like having an upheaval each time nature gets corrupted.

last time i've been to baguio was in 98. it was not as good as it used to be. tiangges have mushroomed everywhere: minesview park, wright park, burnham park, ... even in the botanical gardens and grotto... in minesview park, only that small place where you have the telescope was spared from having a stall. i am not sure how the situation is now especially with the ukay-ukay... parking was also terrible... you had to pay for parking to those street collectors everywhere... where the money goes, i don't really know... that's why i have decided not to visit baguio anymore... really not enticing

I've been going to baguio every year.... Love the city's centralise air conditioning....

But recently I've stopped, it's becoming too congested, and " gulp" there's a lack of water...

I wish it would go back to it's old beautiful state, this days people in manila prefer to go to tagaytay and bora is being considered as the summer capital

A planning team of the Baguio City Government is reviewing a development agenda, which will serve as basis for the local govern-ment’s five-year medium-term development plan.

The development agen-da, culled from the output of the People’s Visioning and Planning Congress in May, contains strategies to pursue the City’s development goals that include environmental management, promotion of eco-cultural tourism, sustaining Baguio’s vision as educational center of the north, efficient local governance and improvement of the delivery of basic services.

Basis

Evelyn Lorenzo, acting secretary to Mayor Braulio Yaranon and member of the technical working group (TWG), said the development framework will also guide the City Development Council (CDC) executive committee and the Local Finance Committee in their review and verification of proposed programs, projects and activities for 2006 along with the unimplemented projects of the previous medium-term development plan.

Suitability

She said a verification process began early this month to determine the suitability of projects based on the development framework.

Projects that will be found consistent with the development goals of the City will be included in the annual investment plan for 2006, which will be submitted to the City Council for approval.

In line with its vision to ensure environmental management, local planners identified waste management, pollution control and increasing the City’s forest cover as strategies.

To promote eco-cultural tourism and tourism-related micro-enterprises, among the strategies named by planners is to rehabilitate major tourism facilities and heritage areas and establishing environmentally-sound infrastructure.

To enhance the City’s position as the educational center of the north, local planners proposed linking universities with potential employment facilities and promoting of Baguio as conference and training center.

They also proposed health and population management programs, water supply and sanitation projects.

i think it's nicely placed atop the mountain. you get a good view of it from Burnham. i heard different stories about SM Baguio. that the proponents had a boxy SM at first. the city government was against the building of this structure. then they made agreements that it has to be a nonconventional SM. So there it is...the SM with sails. Hehe...Unfortunately, the developer didn't know that when it rains in Baguio, it pours me kasama pang wind coming from varying directions. kaya bumaha daw dati sa loob. but they make good use of the cold weather...saving so much on airconditioning.

Looking at it from this perspective. Pangit nga yung SM Baguio structure. A better design could have been made. Plus, what have 'sails' got to do with Baguio? It's not a sailing village.

Yea. Those people are stupid. And what kind of architects does SM MALLS iNC have??? Their designs are mostly crap!

Are all SM Malls supposed to look like bodegas? like a big box of lego? AND the bright colours! yak!

Given the cool mountain setting, i'd expect to see a mall that's like of a darker colour to suit the gloomy weather (im no architect, but this is what i think), colour maybe like brown(as putik or granite?), maroon (as putik/pine wood) or like dark gray (as limestone? i don't know any mineral--as mountains have abundance of those), they could have even added bricks or real stones in its exterior/facade yea?

like can't SM ever do something smart like this??:

(my idea of an 'ideal mall' for a mountain resort like Baguio)

manileño
November 27th, 2005, 04:19 PM
and it's not just Baguio! The mall they built beside Manila City Hall and across Luneta, near the Tourism Building and National Museum, Intramuros etc.. IS ALSO VERY VERY PANGIT. IT RUINED THE CITY CENTRE thats supposed to be Historic, Grand, Old.

I went there in Baguio way back in March 2004. It was a nice experience.. the atmosphere in the city was kinda like you're in a foreign land. well, in fairness to the planners here in this city, sm city baguio is still looking good, but if they will try to expand it or renovate it soon, they must have to remember that it should be compatible with the environment and the climate itself so as to regain its balance to the environment and the city itself. di ba?

Sails has nothing to do with Baguio but they had this for their air ventilation system, para pumasok yung cool air from the outside.

BUT TRUE, It really flooded inside the mall during last year's typhoon. YUCK! Imagine yourself stuck in the middle of the flood at basa na ang lahat ng binili mo. ;)

the street below is session road.

the right tower was cropped partially. didn't notice that initially. i'm keeping it because it's the only one i took from that angle, i love the shadows and the facade is unique. i mean, they don't really set those bamboos all the time for painting. and i won't be coming back to baguio anytime soon. probably not in my lifetime (even if i really would love to return)

is baguio still the favored summer destination? i love baguio....... before urban decay started to crawl in her empire..... and that was before. now i doubt if il even include baguio in my list. its a beautiful city, but was poorly managed. now, its just a big, cold, crowded, urban sprawl. and what the heck, you go to baguio to relax and see new faces, who you see in manila are still the faces you see in baguio every summer. you go to baguio to escape the crowd, but the crowd also goes to baguio. with the crowd are the traffic, made worse by baguios narrow roads, and with baguio's thin air, smog is even worse. now thats not a very appealing situation dearie...

‘Little Baguio’

It used to be a playground...a recreation site of American soldiers during World War I and II. From a vast pastureland in the 1900’s, Camp John Hay has transformed into the ultimate vacation destination in Baguio City. At an altitude of 5,000 feet, the clean, crisp mountain air, the scent of pine and the panoramic vistas of Baguio serve as fitting backdrops to this City’s premier posh address.

"Camp John Hay has always opened its doors to tourists, even when the Americans were still running the camp," said CJH general manager Heiner L. Maulbecker. Today, the 280-hectare property houses The Manor, Camp John Hay’s 180-room hotel centerpiece; the world-class Camp John Hay Golf Course; the recently-built CAP-John Convention Center; the soon-to-be inaugurated Camp John Hay Suites with 160 rooms; and a number of dining and shopping establishments.

He added that, with other developments underway, "everything that is Baguio and more, will be brought in here...city shopping, dining, spas, convention center, museum, artists’ village and even a town center." Thus, the monicker "Little Baguio." I failed to ask Mr. Maulbecker, though, if they will also bring in Baguio’s phenomenal "ukay ukay", in which, he might wittingly reply, "we have duty free shops".

Blessed with pine-covered mountains and a cool climate that averages at 19 degrees Celsius all-year-round – here, one will literally open windows to cool, fresh air. Opened in December 2002, Camp John Hay Manor is designed to blend seamlessly with the towering pine trees. This four-storey structure has an impressive architecture with an ambiance that sets it apart from all the other hotels. The stone exterior finish, along with its shingled roofing and tinted glass windows are warm accents to its cozy yet luxurious ambience. The interiors, with its paneled walls and wooden furniture evoke a Filipino-colonial feel, emulating the atmosphere, the history and the fond memories of old Baguio. Wooden shuttered doors open to outdoor patios with a magnificent view of the Cordillera mountain range.

Its accommodation include studios and one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites all equipped with modern amenities such as cable TV, IDD/NDD telephones with Internet access, fully-stocked refrigerators, hot/cold showers, and electronic safes.

The Manor has also gained a reputation as one of the city’s prime food, leisure and pleasure destinations. The Manor Restaurant offers the best in haute cuisine, fine wines and top-notch entertainment, while the Manor Delicatessen serves freshly baked breads, cheese, sausages and pastries – all by renowned fine-dining Irish chef Billy King of Le Soufflé fame.

The nippy Baguio evening is the perfect excuse to unwind in the comfort of The Piano Lounge, a cozy sitting lounge beside a fireplace where one can enjoy fine piano music while sipping their favorite cocktail to accompany light, savory hors d’ oeuvres.

To provide businessmen and other guests a place to combine business with pleasure, the Business Center is open 24 hours and is fully-equipped with modern facilities such as the Internet, personal computer, photocopiers, fax machines and secretarial services. Then, after an exhausting day at work or from playing a round of golf, pamper yourself with a massage at the Palm Garden Health Spa.

Golfers will enjoy the 18-hole, 5,001 yards, par 69 golf course, which was reopened in 1999, and designed by Jack Nicklaus’ Golden Bear International Design. There is also the 18-hole mini-golf course for kids, or they can try their skill in roller and in-line skating at the outdoor skating rink.

Families and friends can go hiking at the two-kilometer eco-trail that leads to scenic picnic areas where lunch or afternoon snacks may be had in picnic tables set under the pine trees. It also has a butterfly sanctuary and a lush botanical reserve.

And since Baguio is a horseback riding country, Camp John Hay created "Shulan Ti Kabadjo" where one can experience a pony ride along bridle path and riding circle. Young and old alike may also opt to play video games or billiards at the indoor recreation hall.

The hotel also offers full room service, shuttle transport, car rental and taxi service, valet parking, baby sitting, and sightseeing tours. Its five-star service and accommodations with its world-class facilities and professionally-trained staff are a few reasons why guests keep coming back to The Camp.

All the developments in Camp John Hay are geared towards retaining the lushness of the surrounding pine groves, that is why it has remained a dream destination for those who want to escape the concrete jungles of urban living and has likewise, become a splendid representation of Baguio’s natural beauty and bounty.

Okay, I guess I do have to ask the question here in Baguio thread, it's more appropriate.

If a tourist would visit Baguio, what are the hippest and coolest place you guys can recommend to visit there (besides strolling around the city ofcourse)? Any good resorts? Bars and everything for nightlife?

One thing I noticed when I last visited Baguio in 2000 was that the smell of pine wasn't as strong anymore. And yeah it was not as cold. Plus when you are approaching Baguio from Kennon road, instead of seeing stands of pine like in the past, now you see slum areas on the mountainside. So sad indeed.

hmmm, the pics posted here are very familiar, sm baguio is excellent, i like it's roof that resembled a giant parasol (umbrella) - or was that a roof at all? design-wise, i think it's the best among all sm malls, and they use airconditioning very sparely!

the baguio cathedral is nice, with the matching breathtaking views of the city...mines view park was like the view near taal lake in tagaytay sans the lake...been to nevada square saturday night, and the place was overflowing with partygoers...

^^ i think the architect and builders originally intended the Baguio Cathedral to be a 'wedding cake gothic' church. Not sure tho if it was pink eversince cos i think the last time i saw it it was like more violet, and/or a darker shade of pink.

Realty firm offers to remodel Burnham Park

First posted 05:18am (Mla time) May 15, 2006
Inquirer

BAGUIO CITY -- Fil Estate Corp., which operates Camp John Hay, has offered to remodel and upgrade the near century-old Burnham Park, on behalf of its unnamed partners.

The offer is the first development initiative from a private group to be heard by the National Parks Development Committee, which oversees Burnham and all other national parks in the country, according to a Department of Tourism official, who is privy to the transactions.

The 34-hectare Burnham was built in 1909, according to designs prepared by American architect Daniel Burnham.

Burnham, whose Chicago work is considered one of the world’s most influential architectural feats, also designed Baguio for the colonial American government, based on the urban layout of Washington, the government capital of the United States.

Burnham Park draws most of the tourists arriving at the summer capital each year, particularly because of its manmade lake.

But the city government can only sustain its yearly P17-million upkeep, said park administrator Gerry Wayan. Many other parts of the park have gone to rot and needed immediate rehabilitation, he said.

Fil Estate board director Noel Cariño began preliminary talks on the project with the city government last year. He offered Mayor Braulio Yaranon early this year to beautify, renovate and develop the park “subject to certain terms.”

But the offer is being taken with a grain of salt because Fil Estate’s John Hay firm owes the government up to P1.2 billion in overdue rent.

Fil Estate runs the consortium that owns Camp John Hay Development Corp. (CJHDevco), the developer of the former American rest and recreation base.

CJHDevco is immersed in talks with the Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA) to preempt several legal complaints surrounding its 25-year lease.

The developer owes the government rent going back to the 1990s, but it now considers the state liable when CJHDevco also lost its tax benefits in a Supreme Court ruling due to technicalities.

The Fil Estate offer also raised some questions when Cariño was identified as the firm’s president in an official letter sent to Yaranon on March 20.

Lawyer Ferdinand Santos is Fil Estate president. Robert John Sobrepeña, who has stakes in the John Hay project, is Fil Estate chair.

Cariño is proposing to raise two commercial buildings and a two-story pay parking structure, which Fil Estate and its partners will operate, after he conducts a three-month feasibility study of the park.

The firm will foot all the bills for renovating the rest of the park.

In exchange, Cariño said in his letter to Yaranon that the developers would remit 15 percent of its net profits to the city government.

Guided by former Assistant Secretary Joseph Alabanza, adviser on urban planning of then President Fidel Ramos, city architect Josephine Chan is drawing up a new park master plan that preserves Burnham’s original design while incorporating modern facilities, such as an underground parking level near the football grounds.

The preliminary designs frown upon the construction of buildings inside the park. Vincent Cabreza, PDI Northern Luzon Bureau

Update on BAGIUO Pine Trees

Task force for pine trees to be created

BAGUIO CITY - The reported decreasing number of Baguio pine trees has prompted two councilors to ask for the creation of a monitoring team to check the status of trees planted in and around the city.

The plan to create a monitoring team was reached at a meeting on the first Baguio City "Tree Festival" on June 3, which aims to rally strong public support to protect and preserve the remaining forest cover.

Councilors Erdolfo Balajadia and Leandro Yangot Jr. noted that several trees in various parks, reservations and vacant spaces in Baguio were cut to pave way for the construction of commercial and residential buildings over the past years.

While concerned citizens are planting trees in various city sites, their number and survival were left unaccounted and unattended, the councilors said.

"With this predicament, there is an urgent need to create a team to regularly monitor, evaluate and validate the trees planted in Baguio City," they added.

"At present there is a growing concern about the preservation of a healthy environment," they said.

The councilors proposed the monitoring team to be headed by the mayor as chairman and the chief of the city council committee on environment as vice-chairman.

The other members will be from the representatives of the city environment and parks management office, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Baguio City Police Office, association of barangay council and nongovernment organizations, the councilors said.

Inquirer Northern Luzon : Old-timers slam ‘uglification’ of Baguio

THEY grew up smelling the familiar scent of pine, experiencing foggy afternoons, and finding comfort in Baguio City’s verdant carpet.

Cecile Afable, Leonora San Agustin and Virginia de Guia, now in their 80s and 90s, practically grew up with Baguio and witnessed how its pristine environment was slowly ruined by creeping development.

They are now fighting for a cause that will restore their beloved city, their home, to its glory. Their latest challenge? To stop a flyover project at Baguio’s gateway.

This battle, they believe, is worth fighting for, even to their last breath.

The educator

Leonora Paraan San Agustin, 91, recalls her memories of Baguio like they happened only yesterday.

“The smell of pine and the sight of Benguet lilies along Kennon [Road] used to make us excited to go home to Baguio,” says San Agustin, curator of the Baguio-Benguet Museum.

San Agustin graduated valedictorian at the Baguio City National High School
and finished chemical engineering at the old Adamson School of Engineering in Manila to become the first woman chemical engineer in the country.

She found herself going back to her roots in Baguio. She taught English, Chemistry and Geology for 45 years at the Baguio Colleges Foundation (now the University of the Cordilleras).

“I had to go home to Baguio, and I literally became the labandera (laundrywoman) of my family,” says San Agustin.

She never forgot to give back to her city. Aside from founding various women’s organizations, such as the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) and the Lioness Club, she pursued projects to preserve Baguio’s natural beauty.

“I’ve been fighting for the city for 15 years on a crusade to safeguard Baguio’s ambiance and allure,” she says.

The proposed flyover stretching over the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center rotunda, she says, will “uglify” Baguio, one of the top tourist destinations in the country.

She is puzzled why the Department of Public Works and Highways insists on a project that many people are opposing.

Should the construction push through, the felled trees, disrupted aquifer and pollution would make Baguio deteriorate further, she says.

“I will still work [to protect Baguio] until I cannot breathe anymore,” said San Agustin.

The public servant

De Guia, Baguio’s first woman councilor and acting mayor, now leads a quiet life at 90. Yet her role as a public servant has not ended.

“Baguio was a dream city created, formed and planned by the Americans,” she says.

But she says that like her old photographs, good governance is stuck in time.

De Guia comes from a prominent family in the city. She says she is a natural environmentalist since her father was among the pioneer foresters in the country.

After graduating from the University of the Philippines with a degree in philosophy, De Guia took up law and earned her degree in 1940.

She returned to Baguio and found herself running for office that same year.

“I don’t regret taking up law because it was fun and I learned a lot,” De Guia says.

Knowledge of the law, she says, helped her make Baguio a well-administered city during her term. “Baguio had a good government, [it was] a very disciplined city,” she says.

But Baguio, once a model city in the country, has deteriorated due to politicking and lax law enforcement.

She blames politicians for pushing through with unnecessary projects such as the proposed flyover.

“We are in favor of development, but development must have direction,” De Guia says. The project, she believes, may end up unfinished due to lack of funds.

The writer

Afable’s house is a museum in its own right. Decorating it are Sung Dynasty jars and one of National Artist Benedicto Cabrera’s early paintings. But its most prized possession is still its owner, a small woman bound to big responsibilities.

“When they ask me what organization I belong to, I say I only belong to one, ‘Cecile Afable,’” she says.

Afable, 83, is editor in chief of the Baguio Midland Courier, the oldest community newspaper in the city.

Though her four children, now all professionals, chose to settle elsewhere, Afable is happy to stay in Baguio. She adores the blue sky and open space.

But like San Agustin and De Guia, Afable thinks that Baguio has changed for the worse. “There are too many houses, more than enough to be supported by the water system,” she says.

Among the causes she is advocating are the regreening and the protection of the water system of the city. But what occupies most of her time now is opposing another flyover in Baguio.

Issues

These women believe that people who do not care about Baguio have not experienced it the way they have.

“We’re fighting because we experienced the beauty, ambiance and good life of Baguio,” says San Agustin.

They say the flyover will ruin Baguio’s small town appeal and result in the cutting of century-old trees.

“The city does not have the funding. The Commission on Audit now will not give certification that the money is there,” says Afable.

Afable said if traffic at the BGHMC rotunda was the problem, a traffic light would be the cheaper and more environment-friendly solution.

San Agustin, De Guia and Afable agree that apathy is their worst enemy.

“If you don’t demonstrate against [the flyover], nothing will happen,” says Afable.

“The worst crime is not doing anything,” San Agustin says.

But the DPWH is determined to push through with the project despite the opposition of some sectors.

Mariano Alquiza, DPWH regional director, says he is planning to issue another suspension order on the project following the agency’s failure to obtain a permit to cut trees from the city government.

“We are studying the possibility of going directly to the DENR [for the permit],” he says.

Mayor Braulio Yaranon has opposed the flyover and says he will not issue the permit to cut trees for the project.

The 100-year old Baguio Country Club is the oldest social club in the Philippines as well as one of the city's most recognizable landmarks.

Oh, the City of Pines! For anyone who's grown up in the Philippines, few places evoke the nostalgia of Baguio. It's an experience that begins from the time your car snakes up the infamous zigzag road and you see the first traces of the soft fog that blankets the pine-covered hills.

I remember summers spent with extended family, enjoying the crisp, cool climate by day and feeling the warmth and camaraderie of gathering around the fireplace at night. And a trip to Baguio wouldn't be complete without a stop at the city market for strawberries and peanut brittle, or buying several loaves of Baguio Country Club's popular raisin bread, eaten with Benguet coffee or hot chocolate made the old fashioned way using a batirol (wooden stirring implement used to thicken native hot chocolate). It's not surprising that the very mention of Baguio conjures up these collective memories that have become a part of the personal histories of so many people.

In recent years, rapid urban development has led to problems-increased pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the city's narrow roads and the rise of concrete buildings and other structures that mar the natural landscape-that have left some locals and tourists longing for the Baguio they once knew. That's why it's good to know that some places still exist, like the Baguio Country Club, where members enjoy old fashioned hospitality- or, as the theme song of 80's sitcom Cheers goes, "a place where everybody knows your name"-amid the clean and green surroundings for which Baguio is traditionally known.

Past, present and future
The exclusive members-only Baguio Country Club, which marked its 100-year anniversary in February, is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city. It also holds the distinction of being the oldest social club in the Philippines. Unfortunately, the deadly earthquake in July 1999, which was followed by an equally devastating fire just six months later, left little of its original structure, but like the mythical phoenix rising from the rubble, the club was rebuilt and restored to its former glory.

Better still, Baguio Country Club has managed to retain the essence of why it was founded: to give its members a place to relax, recharge and reconnect with one another. Other things also remain the same, like the club's renowned hospitality, quality of service and dedicated staff.

"We are like one big family here," says club librarian Linda Dulay, who started out in housekeeping 28 years ago. "It's a source of pride to be an employee because you feel like an important part of the team, and I have learned a lot from the people that I work with. I am already 53 years old, but I hope that I can continue to contribute to the club's success."

Executive Chef Pio de Guzman is a 25-year veteran. From humble beginnings as a gardener, he now manages the kitchen staff and is responsible for preparing the signature dishes that Baguio Country Club is known for, including their famous raisin bread. The secret, he says, is maintaining quality; much like the secret to the club's enduring success.

Sleep, eat and dine
Over the years, Baguio Country Club has evolved into a truly modern club that offers something for the whole family. As far as accommodations go, there are 167 well-appointed rooms and suites, plus 17 European-style single- or two-story cottages with all the comforts of home-two, three or four bedrooms, private bathrooms, living room and kitchen. Whether it's a weekend, a week, or a month, members will enjoy a comfortable stay.

Dining options are varied with a seven outlets offering different types of cuisine. The main dining area, the Cotterman Room, serves up themed buffets. Check out Hamada for authentic Japanese food, while taking in the panoramic view of the surrounding mountains. Golfers on the green can grab a snack at the Halfway House, while those with a sweet tooth will love the cakes, pastries and bread at the Pastry Shop. After hours, there's Par 7 sports bar for cocktails and chit-chat.

The most popular restaurant is The Verandah, which offers all-day dining with a wrap-around view of the golf course. On weekends, it is packed with members and their families enjoying the breakfast or lunch buffet. The scene is lively: grown ups with newspapers in hand, discussing the news of the day or recapping a golf game, as children flit from table to table, greeting friends and playing. And on any given day, it's not unusual to spot top government officials or other prominent personalities dining there, since the club's membership roster reads like a "who's who" of Philippine society.

Relax, play and shop
Of course, Baguio Country Club is also renowned for its Par 61, 18-hole golf course, which has been the venue for many prestigious tournaments. Situated 5,000 feet above sea level, the Luis Silverio-designed course is both picturesque and challenging, thanks to the narrow fairways dotted with pine trees and elevated greens.

Non-golfers can likewise enjoy the club's facilities, including a state of the art gym, all-weather tennis and badminton court, heated swimming pools and a recreation center with billiards, bowling, darts, table tennis and video games. The youngest members of the family will be entertained with toys, games and activities at the Kids Club. As an added bonus, there's a beauty salon and even a medical and dental clinic on the premises.

Members enjoy other creature comforts. For quiet time, there's the Romulo Reading Room, where members can check out the latest books and magazines or make use of the card table. The Business Center is equipped with computers, Internet access and a fax to keep members connected while away from the office. The club also has an ATM machine for members' convenience. Members don't even have to leave the club to shop. In addition to the gift shop, there's also an antique store with works of art in wood and other popular souvenir items.

Those feeling nostalgic for the good old Baguio will be happy to know it still exists at Baguio Country Club. A century later, the club remains a great gathering place for its 2,000-plus members, who appreciate the warm hospitality, quality of service and sense of camaraderie that comes from belonging to one of the country's finest country clubs.
