Rio has a dark side. Its natural surroundings are amazing! Hell... I love it! But Rio's skyline really blows. I wouldn't call this skyline attractive:

Johon, I look at skylines as a whole. Not a specific area. Puerto Modero in Buenos Aires looks awesome! But, look at the rest of the skyline! Its flat, ugly, and it sucks even more becuase they have way too many uglies! Just about any skyline would look great from some areas... but bad from others. Thats why I like seeing it from every angle.

sorry, but that is utterly ridiculous!! By your standarts, when analizing Toronto, you should not analize only the downtown area, but also the suburbs, etc. People always show their CBDs to analize, and people only analize the CBDs. Rio´s CBD is the downtown, not Copacabana or Ipanema beach. Why when analizing Frankfurt, London, or any american or chinese city, people will analize only the CBD, downtowns and such, and when analizing brazilian cities they will analize the residential neighborhoods??

why people when analize brazilian cities skyline, analizes the residential areas. that only shows that brazilians like to live in apartments instead of houses. Everybody analize Manhatan Skyline and not Bronx or Queens. Residential always looks uglier then comercial buildings.

Wonderful city... The skyline is great... 9,5/10

Rio disgusts me. Sure, some pics look great, and Rio's natural beauty is undeniable.

But the buildings have TOTALLY ruined the city. Unless for the "Torre do Almirante" which I think is already being built, I hate the city as a whole. Been there twice and I just hate to look everywhere and see the whole view infested by shantytowns and slums. It's just filled with poverty everywhere! I absolutely hate it.

And Rio has of course much more beautiful cathedrals... some very old, but much better than this modernist brutalist horror!!!!

9-Although the buildings are not tall and look the same, the mass of them plus the way the city inter-twines with water and mountains is amazing. When viewed from the air Rio is amazing.

I used to travel to Rio 3 or 4 times a year for work and I really liked it everytime. It has by far the most amazing landscape ... not even San Francisco is as beautiful. The bay and mountains are incredible!

Ironically, a few months ago I left my job because they wanted me to relocate to Rio and although I do like the city, I am not sure I could live there (the crime is very stressing) ... besides it was not the best time for me (just bought a house). In any case, I was tired of moving ... I moved because of work from the US, to Mexico, Caracas, Buenos Aires, and Africa. It was time for me to stay here for a few years.

Anyway, I hope to get back to Rio sometime soon and enjoy a caipirinha in Leblon.

Rio´s buildings are just like Sao Paulo´s buildings: they are not very tall. But in Rio they fit so perfectly in those incredible natural settings, mounts, beaches, islands etc. that the view is always jaw dropping.

A great skyline is not only made of height and density. The combination of both with the natural landscape is what makes it great to see. Rio´s skyline would be perfect if it had a couple of buildings higher than 200m.
