That bridge is beyond...beyond any bridge! You have a huge building at the middle of the sea! OMG! this would probably be the 3rd most impressive bridge ever to built in China after the Taiwan-Mailand China Connection (if this gets ever built) and the one that crosses Bohai! :) OMG! :eek2: :eek2:

[QUOTE=big-dog;18692440]World's longest sea-spanning bridge to open near Shanghai

HANGZHOU, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- A 36-kilometer bridge, the world's longest sea-spanning structure, will soon open to traffic, an official in the eastern province of Zhejiang said on Tuesday.

The bridge, spanning Hangzhou Bay near Shanghai, will cut the length of the road trip from Shanghai to Ningbo, a busy port in Zhejiang, by 120 km. It is designed to last 100 years.

The bridge is a cable-stayed structure built at a cost of 11.8 billion yuan (1.64 billion U.S. dollars), according to Xue Zhen'an, deputy director of Zhejiang Provincial Traffic Bureau.

Construction of the six-lane bridge, which will have a speed limit of 100 km per hour, began in November 2003 and ended in June2007, Xu said.

The bridge would boost economic integration and development in the Yangtze River Delta, which covers almost 100,000 sq km encompassing Shanghai, Zhejiang and Jiangsu and is home to 72.4 million people, he added

Like Rear End collision actually is supposed to say that tailgating is dangerous.

Keep space is better, but it should say keep your distance.

China wouldn't grow like it is without English. Plus, English is THE international language.

What a dumb statement you made...

AFAIK, a lot of chinese people are not even speaking a word of English either in Canada or the USA and they still live there/work there/making money and a living out of it.

The longest over water bridge in the world is The Causeway, leaving New Orleans. Its 25 miles long. Is this a new record?

(p.s. not good at math)

New Orleans Causeway bridge is a lake-crossing bridge; while the Huang-zhow bridge is a sea-crossing bridge. just a little word game.

There's no should, last time I checked, English is still the de facto language in the world. It helps smooth out communications among people of different languages. Now one day, that might change to Chinese, but it's still English for now and will be for the forseeable future.

Now, there are many english speakers in the world, and not having the english right doesn't cast you in the brightest light.

Besides, what's the harm in having someone do a proper translation?

 Come on, are you really convinced that it doesn't help for people to learn English? My same argument goes for this post as well. What's the harm in easing travelers and their understanding? There's no harm in letting a much wider audience understand what the signs are saying.

What you are saying basically is, "We shouldn't do it because look, no one else is doing it!"

I think the service centre of the Hangzhou Bay Bridge was, unfortunately, severely damaged in a fire on March 23, 2010. Let's hope the damage is repaired.

It was not severely damaged. The fire caused by welding sparks was put out 20 minutes after it broke out.

This is how the platform looked like when the fire was just put out (damage can be seen in the circled part):
http://ori.hangzhou.com.cn/ornews/images/attachement/jpg/site2/20100323/0023ae6da9a10d13083902.jpg

And in May from big-dog's post (btw, nice pics for a holiday trip), it was already fixed up:
http://i757.photobucket.com/albums/xx216/davidwei01/20100503695_resize.jpg

However, the authorities did put a hold on the project until more safety measurements were implemented by the construction company.

The centre is soon to be open in August, and it is currently being checked to see if it meets all the requirements, for it has to stand against tides, typhoons and earthquakes, etc. But it ain't free to use. It is more like a sightseeing platform rather than a rest area, you need to buy tickets to access the tower or the platform (parking here is free up to 15 minutes). There are other free rest areas currently available along the bridge though, well, you still gotta pay the toll. I guess it is understandable that one has to pay more to use a bridge partially funded by private sectors.
