bay_area February 16th, 2003, 02:08 AM Detroit has a nice skyline- I love the older architecture. I gave it an 8.
Oaronuviss February 16th, 2003, 02:08 AM Considering I stare at it everyday... I'll give it a 6.5
hehehe... but it is nice.
Philly Guy February 16th, 2003, 04:08 AM 5.....I only like the Renissance Center....which practically defines the city. No offense but Detroit had its day (early 1900's) and needs to economically come back.
Eduardo Lopez February 16th, 2003, 10:31 AM the skyline deserves at least an 8.5/10 :)
renell February 16th, 2003, 11:09 AM the renaissance center almost dominates the whole skyline.. the skyline is good, with a fine amount of old scrapers. mix of old and new 6.5
Venezuelacom February 17th, 2003, 12:17 AM looks pretty good
8/10
SteelCity32 February 17th, 2003, 01:25 AM nice, I like detroit's skyline.
7/10
SUNNI February 17th, 2003, 12:22 PM nice, dense skyline, i like it.:)
9/10
Blitz February 17th, 2003, 08:26 PM There is more to a skyline than just height. Detroit has one of the finest collections of pre-depression skyscrapers anywhere. There is a very nice mix of architecture as well.
Wu-Gambino February 17th, 2003, 10:25 PM I agree Blitz. 8.5/10
Westin, get over it. RenCen is taller then Peach.
The Messiah February 18th, 2003, 10:43 PM Yeah i like Detroit:)
A 7.0 for me
CtrlAltDel February 19th, 2003, 02:37 AM 7.5/10 RenCen dominates, but the older buildings add a nice little NYC touch.
BGT February 19th, 2003, 04:42 AM 8.5 nice lakefront skyline :okay:
nostyle February 21st, 2003, 02:57 PM I'd give it a 7 based on size, waterfront, and great old architecture, but the ren center doesn't do much for me and actually throws the skyline out of balance.
Houston March 15th, 2003, 09:16 PM Beyond the best... I give it a 9.0 out of 10.
james2390 June 5th, 2003, 07:19 AM Detroit is nice but doesnt do much for me. i really like the comerica building tho. 7/10
pwright1 June 6th, 2003, 10:30 AM I kind of like it. Lots of potential. Is it a lively downtown? Any department stores, restaurants and theaters? Cool looking older skyscrapers. 8.0
BG918 June 12th, 2003, 09:05 AM I've never been to Detriot but I can say I'm not very impressed by the skyline, or the city in general, from what I've seen in pictures or heard from people. I should actually go before making an opinion, but why would I be going to Detroit? Anyways, the historic buildings are always nice but a large American city with 5 million people shouldn't have only historic buildings. There are a few modern towers I kind of like, but there should be more of them. Good location next to the river, they should (and it looks like they are) capitalize on that. And Ren Cen is not that great IMO. Sorry but this skyline is lacking and should be better. 5/10
fox1 July 1st, 2003, 09:30 AM i rate detroit really high! i love that city as it's really cool.
7.5
joeindt July 9th, 2003, 09:37 PM I have to say that is the best picture I've every seen of Detroit. I hope they keep resalvaging the city. It's really a waste of all of the great architecture thats already been lost in the past 20 years.
Anyway, 7!
Fabio July 10th, 2003, 11:51 PM 8/10
needs more density, but the buildings have good quality and height.
PS. really nice shoot from the lakefront at night (first photo).

MIMICA December 29th, 2004, 07:59 AM I don't really like it...It seems to, classic to me. I guess, the tallest building is the only thing that makes me even give it a chance.
6/10.

detroit is not all doom and gloom, as you've seen from many of the pictures here, but the fact of the matter is that between 1950 and 2005, detroit's population has plunged from 1,849,562 to 886,675. detroit is the 2nd poorest city in the country (thank you cleveland!) and 32% of its population is officially poor. detroit also has the lowest home prices in the USA. the average home in detroit costs $88,300 (compared to the national average of $167,500, or $726,700 for san francisco, the most expensive city). detroit's per capita income is only $14,717. 71% of live births are to single mothers, and over 41% of detroit's adult population is "functionally illiterate".
note that the information i just listed is only for the city of detroit, NOT its metropolitan area or suburbs.
no city can have 1,000,000 people just "disappear", coupled with its abandonment by the middle and upper classes, without it affecting every aspect of human life in the city. i've been fascinated with this idea, and in the last few weeks i've gone out to try to photograph detroit's abandonment and ruins. all of the following pictures are mine and have been taken in the last 5 weeks.
Renaissance Center as seen from Franklin St. Note abandoned buildings and empty lots, taken over by urban prarie.

What the hell are you talking about? nothing at all in those photos showed anything in bad shape whatsoever! if you're talking about the 3rd picture, that would be because those buildings are from the early 1900s :ohno:

What the hell are you talking about? nothing at all in those photos showed anything in bad shape whatsoever! if you're talking about the 3rd picture, that would be because those buildings are from the early 1900s :ohno:
i love the 'd' and give the skyline a 9/10.. few places can match it in character and style
but come on.. some buildings in detroit are obviously in bad shape

scolls December 27th, 2009, 03:46 AM Looking through this thread, a lot of pics weren't working for me but I haven't seen any pics of the downtown from the northwest side. The NW side shows more of the density of the historic buildings and the Ren Cen doesn't dominate or take your focus away from the downtown. The pic below was from another thread about the casinos, but it shows downtown pretty well from the NW side.

Also, why was it so important to post the pics of the abandonment in the city? Yes we get it. The city is half abandoned and crime ridden. Why does every conversation have to focus on abandonment and crime?

And just for fun, one of my favorite buildings in Detroit, General Motors former headquarters. This building is not located in downtown. It's a couple miles outside of downtown in what is now the Midtown/New Center area. It's located by the Fisher Theater and near the Boston-Edison Neighborhood.

pazap July 22nd, 2010, 01:37 AM I got back from Detroit about three weeks ago from the US Social Forum (sadly it wasn't spoken much or hardly about in any major media networks).
I really like the picture you posted Scolls. It does the city justice. It's difficult to truly appreciate a city center, a downtown through most photographs. Though the skyline may not be the most impressive in comparison to say, a giant old city like Chicago, it is still full of early 20th century flavor. I ESPECIALLY LOVED seeing the art deco buildings. They truly mark the skyline and give it its unique beauty. That's something that these older midwest cities have that unfortunately Houston (where i live) lack.
8/10 for the art-decos, 7.5 in general
I'll post my photos in a bit.

Dralcoffin October 15th, 2011, 06:21 AM 8 out of 10. The 1920s giants are some of my favorite buildings around, and Detroit's core is to me one of the most striking, full of character other, more generic downtowns lack. But I don't like the RenCen's isolation, the ring of parking lots and freeways around downtown is heartbreaking, and the horror this city has been through in the past sixty years while the suburbs get richer and richer...*shakes head*.

ssiguy2 January 19th, 2012, 08:12 AM Detroit has a nice skyline and few cities can match it's stock of older skyscrapers.
TweedeMan January 20th, 2012, 08:51 PM cute skyline, not so cute city.

Don't be so quick to judge, ok Detroit isn't so great, but the suburbs are some of the richest, most liveable cities in the world. For instance Ann Arbor, it has a low unemployment rate, high median income, very educated populous, and it was one of the few cities in the US to have zero murders last year.

Oxymoron? You see, that's the problem: people fled to the suburbs there, way! more than most places
(cities_;)) have come to experience :(

royal rose1 January 20th, 2012, 09:47 PM ^^ I Find it intriguing all the lots of nothing but grass, those are obviously where homes used to be and have since been demolished, it's weird to see how a lot can go from being a home, to nothing but grass.
soup or man January 20th, 2012, 10:14 PM If you want to see how awesome Detroit is, you should look at Chrysler's commercials.

I don't see torched as a bad thing though... It's citizens trying to rid their neighborhood of crime! It's an alternative to the city funding deconstruction at least!
trainrover January 21st, 2012, 04:27 AM No, their torching's (which are dangerous, thus bad) are to rid their blocks of blight ... their torchings induce unnecessary bother and fear throught the fire brigades there :(
