big surprise but even like this I don't like much.

Surprisingly modern,pretty and western for an African and thrid-world nation.It deserves a high rating.

Great pictures, what a surprise ! I gave it a 7.

I suppose that the 2nd and the 3rd picture were taken before the outbreak of the civil war in which 250.000 people died :(

I've been there when I was a child in the 80's, during the war, but the war was in the jungle, not in the cities, but there was no money to put the city in good conditions, and to make a "face lift" to the buildings

nowadays, with the end of the war, the city is becoming better...

I've been to Maputo too. Last time was in 1997. It looked like it was once a very beautiful city. Has lovely boulevards, interesting architecture and a great Portuguese influence that makes it feel like a Latin city. Its also very urban and doesnt have any sprawling suburbs, rather lots and lots of tightly packed highrise apartments, which again make it feel like a mini Sao Paolo in a sense.
Pity its so run down and degraded now. Alot of the buildings, roads and infrastructure looked like they were falling apart.
Whats even more dissapointing is seeing rubbish and sewage flowing down the streets, and poverty like you dont know.
But I heard things are changing rapidly and its moving in a positive direction. Hopefully it will someday return to its grander old days.

Would love to someday see some new stuff going up here. At the moment, has a few nice tallish buildings, and skyline looks nice from a distance, although the taller buildings need to be gathered around each other a little more.

The Portuguese managed to create great cities, or cities that later became great. From Rio de Janeiro to Macau, from Sao Paulo to Goa and from Maputo to Luanda; every one fo these places has a little Lisbon flavour in them! Very nice place for being one of the poorest countries in the world. 7/10

i just love this picture!!! the city has so much potential. and with the scrapping of visa's from south africa, and the money that is being ploughed into resorts along the coastline by south african hotel groups it can and will only get better....i can see Maputo becoming a great weekend destination for us folks in Durban and Joburg...its less than an hours flight...

I've been to Maputo. Its a really nice city although I think they need some more modern buildings. Wide avenues and sidewalks, shaded by nice trees that have red beautiful flowers.

I was surprised by the amount of Whites and Arabs in the city. The area around the hotel I was staying at was almost fully inhabited by whites, and these were Mozambicans, not expatriates.

but city life is quite cosmopolitan...malls, art galleries, restaurants, cinema,...i'm impressed!!

Really? are you fu***** kidding me? For an sub-saharan country that had been to a 10-or-more-years of civil war is not easy to keep a city like that.

THIS CITY DESERVES 10/10:)

And its not fair because European cities with not nearly a 1/3 of Maputo's skyline always get better rating.

Quality not Quantity.

^^shut your pie hole! Then Rome should get 1/10 because it doesn't even have a nicer and modern skyline than this african city in a 3rd world country.

With more investment and all those stuff, this city will go further than this.

Very nice city. After South Africa, every african city will look pale in comparison.
