yes, at last a thread from me...anyway, after browsing quite sometimes, i realised that there isnt any specific thread regarding to this topic...so why don't i start one :) ....

LIMA http://mdic.mod.gov.my/mdic/english/logo_lima5.jpg has established as one of the major airshows in the world and its even in the world airshow calender. The next one will be from 6th Dec - 11th Dec 2005. from a humble beginning in 1991, it has grown bigger and had attracted hundreds of exhibitors which increased form year to year. it has achieved a tremendous success of promoting our aviation industry(i believe). As far as i'm concern its the only event that comprises both maritime and aerospace in this sphere(correct me if i'm wrong). Unlike other aerospace exhibition venues worldwide, which are usually held at urban airports, this event held once in two years in langkawi, which is also one of the world’s most desirable resort locations.

here are a few pics that i managed to find...

Langkawi International Maritime and Air Show

Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) brings together the latest technology and products from the aerospace industries. LIMA is now established as one of the major airshow in the world. As a biennial event, the next series will be held in Langkawi Island, Malaysia in 2007. It will be held at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC), only a stone's throw away from Langkawi International Airport.

A brainchild of Malaysia's former Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad, LIMA series of exhibition has proven to be an excellent platform for aerospace manufacturers and related industries to display and promote the latest aerospace technology to senior Government officials, both civil and military and leaders of industries from Malaysia as well as the Asia Pasific region. It represents an unique showcase for both the aerospace and maritime industries in the fast-expanding Asian commercial aviation, airport and defence markets.

What began in 1991 with the aim of making Langkawi as the venue for light and experimental aircraft to fly unhampered by heavy traffic modelled after Oshkosh in USA, LIMA is now on the world's airshow calendar where major players cannot afford to miss. Unlike anywhere in the world a four-hour flying display is held daily throughout the show and is a definite crowd puller.

Almost at every LIMA business deals were clinched as well as memorandum of understanding was signed. The LIMA '03 exhibition for example generated business totaling RM 2.182 Billion (USD 575 million) through 30 contracts, letter of offer and acceptance or intent and memorandum of understanding.

This world-class event has been held biannually since 1991. Visitors are treated to a fantastic display of numerous state-of-the-art maritime and aerospace pieces and equipment, which come from all over the world. Delegates come to Langkawi as goodwill ambassadors of their countries. Apart from the static displays, there are also live shows where various kinds of planes demonstrate their advanced features and capabilities. The aerospace exhibition is held at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre while the maritime exhibition is held at the Star Cruises at Porto Malai.

Extensive tourism promo for Lima ’09
Wednesday June 3, 2009

KUALA LUMPUR: The Govern-ment will take full advantage of the 10th biennial Langkawi Inter-national Maritime Aerospace Exhibition (Lima) to promote tourism in the country.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said his ministry has roped in the Tourism Ministry to make the event a success.

He said that apart from the submarine KD Tunku Abdul Rahman, the Royal Malaysian Navy’s latest acquisition which would be the star attraction, visitors to Lima could also expect a different kind of atmosphere as the two ministries would turn Langkawi into an “Island of Festival” during the five-day event starting on Dec 1.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen, who was also present at the press conference, said a special committee – Tourism Lima ’09 – would be set up to oversee the running of the programme.

“The organiser has held a meeting with hotel operators to discuss room rates. The rates should be competitive enough to attract return tourists,” she said.

The organiser has targeted 500 exhibitors with 270 companies from 22 countries which have confirmed their participation.

Ahmad Zahid said invitations to 394 delegates from 58 countries had been sent out.

Among the notable ones that have confirmed their participation are Finmeccanica Fincantieri of Italy; EADS and its subsidiary Eurocopter; Navantia of Spain; Rosoboronexpect of Russia; SAAB of Sweden; Bombardier of Canada; and Lockheed Martin and L-3 Communications of the United States.

He also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the organiser HW LIMA Sdn Bhd and the event sponsors, Mimos and Malaysia Airlines Bhd.

Tourism Players Welcome Night Market Proposal For LIMA '09
June 25, 2009 13:26 PM

LANGKAWI, June 25 (Bernama) -- Langkawi traders and tourism players on Thursday welcomed the suggestion by Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen that a night market be held in conjunction with the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2009 (LIMA '09) in December.

Langkawi Tourism Association chairman Shukri Shafie said apart from providing additional attraction to the biennial event, the night market would also benefit local traders.

"Tourists and Lima participants will also be able to visit the market and enjoy cultural performances," he said, adding that the event was one of the ways to showcase Malaysian culture to visitors.

Dr Ng, who made the suggestion at a recent dialogue with tourism industry players here, said that the ministry was prepared to bring in cultural troops from states in Malaysia to perform at the night market.

Chairman of the Langkawi branch of the Kedah Traders and Petty Traders Association, Ghazali Md Noor, also welcomed the suggestion, saying the market could either be sited at the Pekan Rabu complex in Kuah, Pantai Cenang or Padang Mat Sirat.

"This will further enliven the nightly atmosphere throughout the Lima," he said.

The association has over 500 members.

Chairman of the Langkawi branch of the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents, Pishol Ishak, said the night market would help increase tourist arrival in future Lima events.

LIMA '09 Attracts 330 Companies From 24 Countries
October 26, 2009 22:51 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 (Bernama) -- A total of 330 companies from 24 countries have so far confirmed their participation in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2009 (LIMA '09) from Dec 1 to 5.

Defence Ministry secretary-general Datuk Abu Bakar Abdullah said 53 types of aircraft and 71 warships would be making a bee-line towards Langkawi for the expo.

He said exhibitors from Australia, Russia, Norway, Poland, United Kingdom, South Africa and Singapore were among those coming.

Malaysia's first Scorpene submarine KD Tunku Abdul Rahman, which sailed back from France recently, will be displayed in public for the first time at Porto Malai.

"About 46,000 trade visitors are expected this year. On the fourth day, about 40,000 people are expected to turn up when the exhibition is opened to the public," he told reporters here.

Abu Bakar said the fact that LIMA was one of the most prestigious events in the world was also another factor why it remained popular and well supported.

He said the expo was one of the largest defence and civil showcases in the world, regularly attracting the global maritime and aerospace industries to the island.

LIMA 09 will maintain the venues, Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) for the aerospace segment and the maritime equivalent at Porto Malai.

Among the aerospace attractions this year will be the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter and F-16 jet-fighters of the Singapore Air Force; a fly-past by a B-52 bomber of the United States Air Force; a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter from the Royal Brunei Air Force; F/A-18D Hornets, Sukhoi Su-30MKM Flankers and MiG-29N Fulcrum jet-fighters of the Royal Malaysian Air Force; and Super Lynx and Fennec AS555 helicopters of the Royal Malaysian Navy.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency will demonstrate water bombing with its Bombardier CL-415 airplane.

HW Lima Sdn Bhd now has the sole rights of organising the event. Previously, the company organised the maritime segment while the aerospace show was handled by another company.

Two conferences themed "The Changing nature of Maritime Securities: Challenges and the Applications of Technology" and "Air Power in Maritime Security" would also be held.

70 Volunteers For LIMA 2009
November 28, 2009 16:39 PM

LANGKAWI, Nov 28 (Bernama) -- Seventy volunteers will be on duty during the Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace (Lima 2009) exhibition on the legendary island from Dec 1 to 5, Langkawi Tourism Action Council facilities and services manager Suziana Wan Othman said on Saturday.

She said the volunteers would serve with the Lima 2009 organiser at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) in Padang Matsirat.

HW Lima Sdn Bhd is the sole organiser of this year's edition of Lima. Previously, the biennial event was hosted by two organisers, separately for the maritime and aerospace segments.

Suziana said the volunteers had to attend a special course held by the tourism council.

Up to 325 exhibitors from 25 countries are expected to take part in this year's Lima.

Suziana said that in conjunction with Lima 2009, various exhibitions, sales and performances would be held at the Awana Porto Malai Resort and Pekan Rabu in Kuah.

She said more than 50 types of traditional food of the various states would be on show, among them "rendang Tok" (Perak), "satay tulang" (Negeri Sembilan), "otak-otak" (Johor), "bubur lambuk" (Kuala Lumpur), "nasi dagang" (Terengganu), "nasi kerabu" (Kelantan), "laksa Perlis" (Perlis) and "asam pedas" (Melaka).

Lima, which was started in 1991, is a major destination for manufacturers of aerospace and maritime products who target the Asia Pacific market.

After 20 Years, LIMA 2009 Continues To Enthral
November 29, 2009 17:26 PM

LANGKAWI, Nov 29 (Bernama) -- Despite having been around for nearly two decades, the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2009 (LIMA 2009) is hardly short on 'firsts' and fresh elements as it enters 10th edition next week.

Like the legendary status accorded the island where the event will be held, LIMA is set to continue maintaining its iconic status, in as far as appeal and relevance are concerned.

If previous LIMA editions were usually co-hosted by two different maritime and aerospace organisers, what's distinctive this year is that there is just a single organiser.

HW Lima Sdn Bhd, the maritime segment host since 1997, has been mandated to solely host this year's LIMA edition at the island from Dec 1 to 5.

"We are building on our good work done previously. We believe this year's LIMA will proceed smoothly," said HW Lima managing director Ahmad Dzuhri Abdul Wahab.

What will be an interesting feature about LIMA 2009, is that the maritime and aerospace exhibition will be merged under one roof at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC).

According to the organiser, over 325 exhibitors from 25 countries would take part in this year's edition.

This means, there will be no booth for the maritime exhibition at the Awana Porto Malai. Only vessels will be berthed there.

There are 96 vessels, including warships, which will be docking at the Awana Porto Malai.

This year, LIMA is where Malaysia's submarine KD Tunku Abdul Rahman will be making its maiden appearance and likely to emerge as the main attraction at the maritime's segment show.

"We will be welcoming our own submarine, KD Tunku Abdul Rahman. I feel that she is going to be the main attraction at Awana Porto Malai," said Ahmad Dzuhri.

KD TAR is a Scorpene-class conventional submarine that is diesel electric powered. Built by DCNS of France and Navantia of Spain, it is said to be one of the most advanced and silent submarines, to date.

Another 'first' for LIMA is that for the first time in its history, the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) will make an appearance.

Armed with its AH-64D Longbow Apache helicopter and F-16 Fighting Falcon jet, the RSAF is set to thrill the crowds of LIMA 2009, with the fanciful aerial displays of both aircrafts.

Also making a debut at this year's air show is the United States Air Force B-52 bomber. It is set to offer a special treat by performing a low-level fly-past.

Having begun in 1991, LIMA is now the premier destination for aerospace and maritime manufacturers targeting the Asia Pacific market in the defence, enforcement and civil sectors.

Malaysia beli 3 kapal MSS

Lima 2009, which opened yesterday and will be on until Saturday, has drawn 325 exhibitors from 25 countries, among them international companies such as Eurocopter, BAE Systems, Thales and the DCNS Group.

Lima, launched in 1991, is now a major destination for companies manufacturing maritime and aerospace equipment which have the Asia Pacific as the target market in the defence, enforcement and civil sectors.

Najib also expressed satisfaction with the participation of aircraft and vessels in Lima 2009.

"This time, the maritime event is the biggest yet," he said. Fifty-four aircraft and 99 vessels, including warships, are taking part in Lima 2009.

The prime minister also had words of praise for local companies which had upgraded their capabilities and were able to compete with the international firms.

"The four measures adopted by the government have helped, step by step, to enhance the capacity of the local companies, which have come for recognition in the region and also the world," he said.

The government's assistance for these companies has been by way of support for the vendor development programmes and through its procurement policy, he added.

The government procurement policy gave priority to local companies if they had the capacity, he said, adding that the government approach was to undertake procurement based on national projects or programmes, such as the Government Integrated Radio Network (GIRIN) which facilitated communication among 13 government departments.

Asked about new ideas pertaining to organising future Lima exhibitions, Najib said it would be left to the Defence Ministry to make proposals.

"I hope we can continue to hold Lima because it will serve as the highlight for all our programmes directed towards Lima for the signing of contracts and so on," he said.

Najib also said that the holding of Lima in Langkawi helped to promote tourism.

LIMA 09 Kicks Off With Aerobatic Display
December 01, 2009 19:55 PM

LANGKAWI, Dec 1 (Bernama) -- The Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2009 (LIMA 09) kicked-off on Tuesday with a captivating aerobatic display by several aircraft.

The aerial display started when three Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) MIG-29N air interdiction aircraft dubbed "Taufan Ganas" awed dignitaries with death defying aerobatic manoeuvres.

The 12-minute aerial display captivated the audience and proved that the the ageing MIG supersonic aircraft still possessed fearsome capability.

Malaysia which has 18 MIG-29N had decided to decommision the aircraft next year and replace it with a more capable and all-rounder multi role combat aircraft (MRCA).

RMAF's Sukhoi SU-30MKM then took to the skies, captivating audience with textbook precision, reinforcing its tag as the most capable and state-of-the-art fighter aircraft in Malaysia's inventory.

The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) Apache AH-64D Longbow attack helicopter made its maiden appearance in Malaysian airspace with similar jaw-dropping aerial display along with the F-16C/D Fighting Falcon aircraft.

Making a comeback to LIMA was the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) F-111 "Aadvark" before a Guam-based United States B-52 "Stratofortress" made a historic flypass over Langkawi skies for the first time at LIMA 09.

The presence of a B-52, famous for its "carpet bombing" role during the Vietnam and the Gulf war was another highlight of LIMA 09.

Singapore's participation in the form of the Apache helicopter and Falcon aircraft was its first for LIMA.

A total of 15 aircraft and helicopters have been slated to perform daily aerial displays throughout LIMA 09.

Over 325 exhibitors from 25 countries are participating at LIMA 09 which showcases a myriad of aerospace, maritime and defence equipments.

International defence companies taking part in LIMA 09 include Eurocopter, Thales, DCNS, BAE Systems and AgustaWestland.

Local participants include companies such as National Aerospace & Defence Industries Sdn Bhd (NADI), Airod Sdn Bhd, Boustead Naval Shipyard and Composites Technology & Research Malaysia (CTRM).

Najib Tun Razak menerima cenderamata sambil diperhatikan oleh Ahmad Zahid
Hamidi (kanan) semasa jamuan Makan Malam Gala LIMA 2009 di Langkawi, semalam.

LANGKAWI 2 Dis.

I just came back from Langkawi for LIMA '09 today. I managed to see the airshow but there is no acrobatic team performing like the red arrows..but the aircraft stunts performed by RMAF, RSAF and RAAF are really good. It shows the capabilities of the fighter aircraft. I really amazed with the agility of RSAF's F-16 and Apache attack helicopter. I thought USAF's B-52 Stratofortress is going to fly over but it did not..I really wanted to see this mighty bomber. Well..I hope can see it next time in 2011 .

RM4.7b contracts inked at LIMA
Published: 2009/12/05

A total of RM4.7 billion worth of contracts were signed during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) 2009 as of yesterday.

The unofficial value, however, could be at least RM9.5 billion, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

"Many of these contracts involve parties from abroad, between Malaysian and foreign companies," he told a press conference before the 10th LIMA edition came to a close today.

The previous event, LIMA 2009, saw RM11 billion worth of deals sealed.

This certainly reflected the continuous optimism of market players despite the global financial crisis, Zahid said, expecting several more deals to be signed including for the supply of military equipment and assets over the next two years.

He said Malaysian companies that started off as marketing agents for international defence and security products, had now become major players in the defence industry.

"For example, Boustead Group has registered more than 3,000 local vendors, of which 2,000 of them are active.

"Of these, about 600 vendors are present in the market, not only to strengthen the shipping industry but involve in the manufacturing of materials and equipment for the global defence industry," he said.

He said the achievement made by some Malaysian companies reflected their commitment to strengthening the industry, and this would help support LIMA 2011 -- a possible defence industry hub for Asean.

"Asean member countries can see a display of great potential defence assets that can be used in their countries and forge greater collaboration among industry players in the region," Zahid said.

"I reckon for the next two years, we would be able to invite more participants especially the aircraft manufacturers. And we would also like to invite neighbouring airforce teams here not only for static display of their assets but to participate in the airshow," he said.

LIMA 2011 will be organised by HW Lima Sdn Bhd.

LIMA relevant platform for aerospace, defence industries
7th December, 2009

A Bombardier Cl-415 Multipurpose Aircraft belonging to the Malaysian Maritime
Enforcement Agency (APMM) in action during the LIMA ‘09 exhibition.

LANGKAWI: The Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) is still a relevant business platform for the aerospace and defence industries.

Despite the impact of the global financial crisis still being felt, RM4.7 billion worth of contracts were clinched in five days during the 10th edition that ended Saturday.

It shows that opportunities for future business in the aerospace and defence industries are still promising.

Some of these contracts were secured by Malaysian companies, reflecting their growing reputation and global recognition.

Even though the value of contracts during LIMA 2009 was lower compared with RM11 billion in the previous edition two years ago, the fact that business deals did come through is a reflection of optimism of industry players, locally and internationally.

Malaysian companies especially have shown their true capabilities and gained greater reputation and recognition with many having been awarded contracts by global aerospace and defence companies like BAE Systems and Boeing.

Composite Technology Research Malaysia Sdn Bhd, for example, has a current book order of RM2.8 billion from various customers to manufacture Airbus and Boeing parts.

Surely, the company will not stop there as former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has thrown them a new challenge – to create, design and build a cheaper single-seater aircraft on its own entirely based on the Eagle 130B aircraft frame which the company has successfully manufactured.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Malaysian companies had surely shown their true capability with the introduction of new products such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV)s.

This, he said, could further strengthen the industry and help support LIMA 2011 to become a defence industry hub for Asean.

Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) senior vice president (intelligence and research) Lt Col Ir Kamarulzaman Zainal said Malaysia had the capacity to emerge as a regional aerospace centre by 2015 since the country was now well equipped with all the basic requirements to be a regional major player.

Despite the global economic slowdown, he said, the local aerospace industry was forecast to grow at a comfortable rate of about eight per cent next year due to the expansion of the aero-manufacturing and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) sub-sectors.

He said the industry’s turnover was expected to increase to RM26 billion this year from RM25 billion last year despite the global economic slowdown.

The pressure of lowering production and operating costs due to the global economic slowdown would further promote more new investments and outsourcing activities in Malaysia, he added.

Malaysia had attracted more than 13 foreign aerospace investments between 2006 and 2008, including the plan by a first tier manufacturer to establish their business in the country.

The total value of new and reinvestment projects during the period was more than RM1.4 billion with a threefold increase seen from 2007 to about RM990 million in 2008.

Since 1991, LIMA has emerged as the premier destination for aerospace and maritime players, targeting the Asia-Pacific market in the civil, defence and enforcement sectors.

High-tech hardware: Najib and Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr
Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (right) looking at an exhibit at a booth at the LIMA exhibition hall yesterday.

LANGKAWI: Slicing through the air, two planes from the aerobatics team Krisakti arched in curves, painting a heart with their slipstreams on a clear blue sky.

Then, zooming in from the side, the third and final member of the team “pierced” the “heart” with an “arrow” as a sign of love and support for the nation and its leadership.

Performing at the aerial display on the first day of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) 2011, Krisakti did the nation proud as the country’s first professional aerobatics team.

The team performed an eight-minute display that wowed VIPs, exhibitors and guests at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre.

In total, 10 different aircraft took part in the one-and-a-half hour aerial display yesterday.

Among the breathtaking performances were that of the Typhoon BAE that dived and looped effortlessly through the air, before roaring in a vertical climb so high that left it just a tiny dot in the sky.

France’s Rafale Dassault was also impressive as it showed off its manoeuvring capabilities – at times, moving so slowly, it almost seemed static in the sky.

The Boeing F/A18E Hornet drew delighted gasps as it rolled and flipped, often blazing off in the direction of the sun, blinding spectators as they tried to follow the daring trajectory.

The show ended with a stunning five-plane aerial display performed by RMAF’s MiG29Ns.

The airshow, which was witnessed by the country’s top brass including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, was one of the highlights at LIMA 2011’s opening ceremony.

The five-day event is expected to attract more than 70,000 attendees from 56 countries.

Airshows and naval displays will be held daily while 64 aircraft and 59 warships will acknowledge their presence throughout the event.

The exhibition will be open to the public from Friday to Saturday.
