Well. I am from Bham and it is a nice city all together. For some reason they dont build all the tall buildongs downtown. You have to drive to Hoover or even the 280 area to see more. It is nice for the size, but we are always being looked down upon, and of course ATL gets everything first. If someone would give us a chance we would be more than happy to have more buildings to make it " exciting" for all to come and visit.

Would like to see some more non-box building types, but it's not as bad as Columbia. The buildings are beautiful up close. NIce variety of styles, and a somewhat dense cluster there. I like! 7.5/10.

I was not aware of that FAA height restriction... that's depressing...

anyways... I give this an 8

I think B-ham has one of the best skylines in the south... its few newer, taller buildings are pretty unique and interesting... but the real treasure about the city... is the huge number of pre-WW2 structures that are very beautiful... and also quite rare for southern cities... but B-ham's strong industrial heritage made this a powerful city a long time ago.

Nice form to the cbd, has a nice dense-looking cluster, and some reasonable height (not high enough though as mentioned due to FAA) but impresses me for a southern US city.

I have been in Birmingham once about last 6 years ago. Skyline in Birmingham was ok and little boring but... Nice building though.

I give you a 6.5/10

Birmingham don't have ecomany booming in downtown as like Los Angeles does. Los Angeles have alot of modern and tallest skyline. Los Angeles keeping plans for project about more tallest build in any decade.

I remember that, Birmingham have bad school system and higher water bills. It does more worse than L.A.

o.k., here's some far better pics.

metro population's around 1,100,000, the city's about 240,000. the city's got far more in common with Detroit, Buffalo and the rustbelt than say, Atlanta or Nashville, thanks to a heavy urban feel. hopefully i can get on top of my building someday and get a good 360.

i've got some better photos, but my host's updating servers so i can't upload anything right now...

i wake up to this view; it's great

LSyd,

I saw one of the most amazing Bham skyline pics I've ever seen not too long ago. It was from a perspective few see. The shot is from Ruffner Mountain a few miles northeast of downtown. The skyline looks totally different. I wish I knew where I saw it but it was amazing.

Fear of Heights

In all fairness, I think 7 out of 10 is a fair assessment of the Bham skyline. It has nice density, a great mix of early 20th century high and midrises as well as a few impressive modern towers, and several incredible views and angles of this underrated skyline. Now if the city would add a regional draw (whatever that might be) as well as an entertainment district the downtown area would really become a more well rounded area.

On another note, it's disappointing to see the city limit population gradually decrease. Unfortunately, Bham has been hurt by de-annexations on the fringes of its already small and limited city boundaries which have hurt population numbers even more. The city population is misleading as the metro as a whole is experiencing unspectacular, but respectable and steady population growth. The Bham-Hoover metro area currently has right at 1,075,000 residents.

P.S. Wish I could post that Ruffner Mtn. picture but I don't know how to.

LSyd

i agree with the downtown entertainment. i'd probably live downtown, except all the entertainment and great bars are on southside. i'm only a block from GQ's #2 bar in the world, The Garage.

plus there's a bar/coffee shop on the first floor of my building...then there's a tons more in walking distance.

plus i have a a far better view of all the downtown buildings/cbd from my tower.

Lots of condo development and UAB construction going on the last few months in downtown Birmingham. Lots of cool old midrise buildings being renovated into nice condo developments. Unfortunately, while there's a lot going on there isn't anything tall being built that would really stick out at the moment.

BTW, I love the symetry and density of Bham's downtown core. The skyline isn't huge by any means, but is much more impressive in person. The place also has some incredible vantage points to view downtown as well. If anyone is ever in town, be sure to visit Vulcan park and ride the elevator to the catwalk above (if you aren't afraid of heights). It is an awesome view of the city.

if by "cool old midrise" you mean pre-WWII and WWI skyscrapers, yes, there's a lot of redevelopment. and the smaller, true midrises of that era (mid-rise as 11 stories and under.)

an 11 story just started construction, there's another 11 story planned a block away that seems to have stalled out...hopefully it'll still get built. each of these is about about a quarter of a mile from my place, so it's nice to see the progress. there's also 16 big houses being built on a small piece of land next door to me.

a couple of new panos from old vantage points. sorry for the distortion.

BTW, I never rated it. I'd give it a 7 out of 10 based on density, setting (has several ridges with amazing vantage points), and the number of midrise/highrise historical gems like City Federal, The Cabana, etc. The minuses are that it lacks a few 500+ footers. Having said that, it's still easily the 3rd best skyline in the Deep South (Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi) behind Atlanta and New Orleans. The skyline is about 3 or 4 500 to 600 footers away from having an awesome and dense mix of highrises and midrises.

Fear of Heights
April 7th, 2006, 09:01 PM
I respectfully disagree. It doesn't have the beautiful modern glass towers that a Charlotte has but it has awesome pre World War 2 designs among many of the midrises. The Amsouth Harbert Plaza (one of Bham's 4 modern highrises) is easily one of the Top 25 towers in the entire Southeast design and visual appeal wise in my humble opinion.

P.S. While Lsyd does a fantastic job with his pictures, there are several photos on urbanplanet that are even more spectacular.

Love the hometown! The new and old merge quite well. All its lacking is a nice spire to serve as a focal point, but with the FAA regulations it’s not likely to happen anytime soon...

Looks like some crazy highway city! Nice old buildings though in the close up pics (hence the 5 points). From afar though, I think I'd just turn back around and leave. Maybe that's why there are so many highways?

O.K. for size of city. It is kind of depressing me the more I look at it...

I like the smaller but more historical buldings though. The city itself deserves a 9 but the skyline deserves a 5.

Good density. Bham to me is a more dense/less spread out, slightly taller version of Memphis only with nicer modern towers (in other words...the few modern towers are nicer IMO than Memphis's).

You have to get into downtown Bham and understand the surrounding terrain to appreciate the skyline of this city. For example, heading north on I-65 from south of the city you cut through and over Red Mtn and veer right and boom...the skyline pops up out of nowhere. This is what I find cool about this skyline along with how dense it is with great old architecture.

8 for the character of buildings and density but a 6 based on wow factor. Score is a 7.

hey mdguy, could you please credit the photographers when you post pics you find online (the black and white one's mine.) i don't mind you posting it, it's just polite to give credit. thanks.

oh, and since it hasn't been mentioned in a while:

the height limit for Birmingham's downtown is 454 feet/138 meters because of the airport being close to downtown; the city's two tallest are almost that height. there was a plan for a 900 and 700 foot towers to be built in 1991 just on the edge of downtown, but they were cancelled. another tower just outside of downtown was scaled back from 30 to 20 stories in 1970 because of a sinkhole near the foundation...so sadly Birmingham's vertically challenged due to regulations and poor soil.

Lame excuses, for a city facing a big bankruptcy (3.5$b),a quick succession of mayors (about 4 in 5 yrs)with some in prison and accusations of corrupt contracts things are only getting worse. It,certainly,is not a case of being looked down upon but a case of bad management, rotting infrastructure and nobody wanting to invest in a sinking ship.
Me thinks somebody needs to move to Egypt for being in "de nile" .3.5

The city isn’t near Bankruptcy at all, it’s Jefferson county. That’s why all the news articles refer to it as the Jefferson County Sewer Debt, not Birmingham City… and the debt is now 3.9 Billion (I believe). http://www.al.com/news/birminghamnews/metro.ssf?/base/news/123675931663870.xml&coll=2

Baltimore has a nice skyline...but isn't as nice as Cleveland or Pittsburgh. Baltimore is a great city with great density and fabric though so why care about the skyline?

similarly, Birmingham has a great skyline for having a FAA height restriction downtown. there were plans to build a 700' tower (with guady cross designs) just south of the restriction zone but those got cancelled (thankfully?) due to Desert Storm in 1990 (and Atlanta benefited.)

Birmingham/Jefferson County has suffered from corrupt, ignorant leadership since the 1950s, while its regional neighbors benefited. despite this, it's an otherwise healthy city.

i did think that OKC was very comparable to Birmingham in size and feel (except OKC's flat and Bham's hilly) when i visited, although Birmingham has healthier streetlife. Birmingham should take a lesson or five from Bricktown though.

True, Baltimore's skyline is not as good as those two and is a city that doesn't need a nice skyline to be a great city. However, the post i was speaking to was referring about the actual size of the skyline, which was not very well thought out in its examples. Baltimore has a much larger skyline than the 'classic inner harbor view' would lead most to think, as that view blocks out many buildings of decent size. Birmingham does not have a larger skyline than Baltimore nor should it for its size, and Jacksonville has a very comparable skyline, because both cities are the same size.

I would agree now that i think about it a bit more. Cleveland's is a bit more dramatic though, while Baltimore is denser (denser than Pittsburgh as well) and more balanced and attractive.

Now that i think about though, LSyd, what was the relevance of mentioning those two cities? lol

Yes. Though again, what's the point of arguing Baltimore's skyline down? I was repyling to the guy who says Jacksonville and Baltimore look bad size-wise in comparison with Birmingham, and then you bring in two new, irrelevant cities and compare them to Baltimore. I don't understand the purpose of that.

Edit: not trying to be rude or anything! it was just bugging me

Birmingham has a larger metro than Jacksonville, and Baltimore has about 500,000 more in its metro than Birmingham, and with a sizably larger skyline, I don't think Birmingham looks good in comparison imo.

Actually Jax metro is 1.330 million, Birmingham's is 1.120 million, and Baltimore's is 2.670 million. These are 2009 census numbers, not my own. Also Birmingham's central county Jefferson County has 665,000 people over 1,113 square miles of land while Jacksonville's Duval County has 857,000 people over 774 square miles of land. Now you tell me which metro is larger. Jacksonville also has a considerably larger skyline and a larger metro feel being that it is closer to more urban areas, has much higher tourism, has snowbirds/second home people, and is growing much much faster.

OTOH Birmingham has more beautiful old buildings and skyscrapers still intact (though Jax can compete on that front) and Birmingham has a downtown university campus/medical campus. It is not a bad skyline and they have a wonderful new park near the famous slosh furnaces.
