I'll start.

Baltic Basketball League - what do you think about it?

I think it's very good, just a bit late! Lots of good young players are already gone to play abroad. Weaker clubs gain the most i think - and the three grands will have at least 1 or 2 serious opponents on regular basis. At the end of the season I think it will be 1. Zalgiris, 2. Ventspils and 3. Lietuvos Rytas

The only sports I like are:
Rally
Football (not much but still like to play EURO 2004 on my PS2 - Latvia has won the cup about 10 times now ;) )
Skateboarding
Auto sports (I like the Baltic Golf cup but i don`t follow the results).

I'm into anything where Finland's good at.

-Formula One, in the 90's there up to three Finnish drivers at the same time, for a short time one in each of the two top teams (Häkkinen in McLaren, Salo in Ferrari)

-Ice hockey, team Finland is a team of downright brilliant playing systems, as opposed to actually having skill, but hey, at least we finished second after Canada in World Cup.

-Winter sports, Norway rules but we're not that far behind.

-Memory Lane Marathon, Nurmi used to be pretty good.

latvianGG: you are a bit mistaken by that victory of ventspils in vilnius, because it was the worst game of rytas this season and the game is now going better and better, so in ventspils you will be demolished, by both zalgiris and lietuvos rytas ;) , but i think baltic basketball league isnt very important to lithuanians, because our level is much more higher than yours, but i think it will help to latvians, and especialy estonians to increase their basketball level, and i think also football, handball and ice hockey (one lithuanian team already plays in latvian championship) leagues should be united, it would really help to baltic sports

Not into sports much at all, but the one I've been to games the most and actually like to watch is basketball. Been to quite a few games the last seasons (Go Vikings!) and the Kincks-76ers game back in November at the Garden :D.

Well maybe you can beat us in basketball.. so what.. we can beat you like babies in hockey.. my friend's club (very weak) played against estonian and Lithuanian u-20 teamsn and won them like buch of babies :-D And football.. Latvia won Turkey (!!!) and made it to finals!!! But my main point is that you (pablonis) shouldnt be so boastful, because we all are better in some ways... Lithuania in basket ball, Latvia in football and hockey.. Esotina in ... emm...umm.. rally? :)

Estonia is pretty good in football, we won russia.. have you won Russia? Estonia is okay in Basketball, we won France. Estonia is the middle of the two - latvia and Lithuania, and we are quite good in volleyball

Football. Allsvenskan is going to be hotter then ever the coming season. A lot of players have returned back from the other leauges :)

Elfsborg want to buy back Anders Svensson for 10 million sek from Southampton.

Malmö FF will now play the final in the Efes Pilsen Cup in Turkey. They will meet Dortmund or Spartak Moscow in the final. It's looking good

Ice hockey, football, Formula 1, ski jumping... Those are my favorites :). Ice hockey on top of everything :D. And about basketball, to be honest i couldn't care less! It's a very small sport in Finland and I don't follow NBA or anything so... :D

norxx, i know that you can beat us like babies in ice hockey :) , but football?????? naah i dont think so, only because you beat turkey doesnt mean that you are the best, read in other thread where i wrote about football in baltics, and estonians, you arent even middle in basketball, latvians are middle and i think france played without parker, moiso, rigodeu, brothers pietrus and others, because you just simply couldnt beat their best squad, its even not that easy to lithuanians to do that

I guess anything sports related can go here, right?

Last week Danish national football player Jesper Grønkjær was sold to Atletico Madrid.

Today another Dane arrived in Madrid. From BBC:

Gravesen completes switch to Real

Thomas Gravesen has completed his move from Everton to Real Madrid after passing his medical.
BBC Sport understands Real will pay around £2.5m for Gravesen, 28, who has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal.

"This is a dream for me," said the Dane as he was unveiled in Spain. "This is the biggest club in the world. I am very proud and pleased to be here."

And Real president Florentino Perez added: "He is without doubt the player we were missing."

"He's a fighter and has a great competitive spirit but he's also a technically gifted player. I am sure he is going to do great things this season."

The Danish midfielder joined Everton from Bundesliga side Hamburg for £2.5m in 2000 but was out of contract in the summer.

"I loved my time at Everton and would like to place on record my thanks to all the supporters, players, officials and coaching staff of the club," he said.

"Leaving was a difficult decision. But the opportunity to join Real Madrid, which is one of the world's great football clubs, comes only once in a lifetimeand was not one I could decline.

"I genuinely wish Everton every success for the remainder of the season."

Everton boss David Moyes will now move to line up a replacement for the Dane, with Spurs winger Simon Davies and Blackburn's David Thompson potential targets.

Everton chief executive Keith Wyness told his club's website: "No-one at Everton wanted to lose Thomas Gravesen. We did everything we could to keep him.

"Once it became clear that Thomas had his heart set on a move to Real Madrid, we fought hard for the best possible deal for Everton. To that end we feel we have been successful."

The former Milan(and former french nationalplayer) player Ibrahim Ba maybe will come to Djurgården. They're checking him out now. Djurgården seems to be our new new Real because they're now looking at players in the whole of europe and the prize dont seems to be that important. Allsvenskan is hot, and its going to be even hotter. I dont think Malmö and Göteborg is gona tolerate Djurgården behavior so they're probably going to do the same.

Football in Sweden have become as it used to be, a religion ;) its very popular now and the thing because Elfsborg can by back Anders Svensson is because the ordinary people and companies around Borås. Its their money

Ice hockey used to be entertaining but now it's all clutching and dragging with few goals, at least here in Finland.

Does anybody plays darts? Perhaps not too seriously... In fact I'm almost sure that noboy here is even interested. Only maybe some finns?
Anyway I used to play competition darts here in Holland. Once during my vacation in Latvia I played in open Latvian cup in 2003... I made it to the second round which puts me to the best 16 players. Almost all best latvian darters were there so not too bad for an amateur ;-)

Top-five footie players in Finland:

1. Mikael Forsell, 19 goals for Birmingham last season, currently injured
2. Sami Hyypiä, former captain of Liverpool
3. Teemu Tainio, currently playing for Auxerre, rumours are taking him to ManU. Probably Finland's greatest future prospect.
4. Antti Niemi, considered the best goalie in Premiership presently, rumours are taking him to Arsenal or ManU.
5. Mika Väyrynen, one of the biggest midfield prospects in the Dutch league.

Denmark is a country really good at Handball, pretty good at table-tennis, soccer, and we are starting to become good at hockey (ever since we beat USA 5-2 and tied Canada 2-2 about 2 years in the World Championship Hockey tournament.. ill never forget that :))

Our 5 most popular soccer/football players from Denmark are:
Peter Schmichael (dont know if i spelt the name right) - He doesnt play anymore, he retired i think in 96 .. but he was the worlds greatest goalie
Thomas Gravesen - Real Madrid
Jon Dahl Tomasson - Some cool team in Italy
"something" Grønkjær - looool .. as you can tell, im not the biggest soccer fan
Brian & Michael Laudrup - Not playing anymore, but used to be the best players in Denmark and both them and Peter S. played in 92 when Denmark won the Euro Cup.

We also have a good golf player, Thomas Bjørn, he just finished 2nd recently in i think it was called American Open, in Ireland ... i dont know how hes been doing since then

In table-tennis, we won only a bronze-medal in the recent Summer-Olympics ... i forget who the players were ... lol .. :)

We're also pretty good at water-sports: sailing, rowing, etc..

Djurgården is getting stronger and stronger. Today Ibrahim Ba arrived and Djurgården wont stop there. In 2 weeks they might get 5 new good players.

Ibrahim Ba, former Milan player and a former french national team player
Felix Magro, Italy/Switzerland
Christer George, Norway
Benedict Vilakazi, a south african national team player
Rowen Hendricks, also a south african national team player.

Now i'm just wondering what IFK Göteborg and Malmö FF re going to do :D. IFK got a great advantage and that is Nya Ullevi, twice this year over 40 000 people went and saw the Göteborg derby's. That's a lot of people and it happend twice this year so thats good for the business.

They had some problems but thats not very strange...

Dutch played with mostly young players, only 2 big names - Makaay and keeper Van Der Sar. Besides, dutch team had black/white forms on as part of a action against racism. This action was started by Arsenal's Tierry Henry.

The France vs Sweden match ended 1-1.

So far this year we haven't won a single game. This is how it looks so far
France vs Sweden 1-1 played without Zlatan and Henke
Sweden vs Mexico 0-0, Sweden had only players from Allsvenskan while Mexico had their ordinary team
South Korea vs Sweden 1-1, same as in the Sweden Mexico game. Sweden only had Allvenskan players, no real stars

Sweden is ahead of Denmark???? NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! :'( :'( :'(

What do you mean? Denmark has always ranked higher then Sweden, because we've always been BETTER than Sweden ;) I mean come on ... you cant even beat France. Last time Denmark played them, we beat them 2-0. And last year in EU2004 we would have murdered you if it wasnt because of Italy. We LET you score the 2 goals so we both could move on and Italy move out. :D

hmm .. i just checked out the VM2006 list on bt.dk ... and it seems like Denmark is in huge trouble .. :( .. We just lost to Greece, 2-1 ... Damn .. Now we're at 3rd place in our group (2) :( WE MIGHT NOT MAKE IT!!! NOOOO!!!

How many games are going to be played in total?

They still need 7 games.

Tonights "show" was horrible, I can't remember I've ever seen a National Danish team play as bad as they did in the first half:( 2. Half was better, but it wasn't enough.

It will now be very hard for us to qualify, here's the standing:

Team, games, score, points
Ukraine 6 11-3 14
Greece 5 7-5 8
Denmark 5 7-6 6
Turkey 5 6-5 6
Albania 5 3-7 6
Georgia 4 5-5 5
Kasakhstan 4 2-10 0

Yes 12 games, each team play all the other teams home and away.

Yes there's still a change to make it, atleast the 2nd place, but they have to perform better than tonight. The "big" games left (if I remember correctly) are Turkey away, Greeece home and Ukraine away.

More football scores:
Birmingham, friendly game,

England - Netherlands 0 : 0

Dutch team played with almost no big stars, with a lot of young players, such as Heitinga, Van Der Vaart (Ajax), Kronkamp, Boularouzh, Landzaat (AZ Alkmaar), Kuyt, Castelen (Feyenoord). This is long term development started by the new coach Marco van Basten, who is selecting new talents to make them get used to this level for the future big tournaments when a lot of oldies won't be there anymore. English side missed many important defenders, but offence had Owen and Roonie ready to roll, but had no chance against young unexperienced, but very talented dutch defenders.
This game was also special due to the anti-racism action (http://www.standupspeakup.com) organised by several well known dark players such as Thierry Henry and Ronaldinho. Dutch team played in special for this occasion made black/white shirts:

Unfortunately they dont show any soccer games at all over here, sometimes they'll show some games from the english-league, but thats it ... so im sorry for not knowing too much ;) Its just every time i checked out the FIFA ranking, Denmark has always been further up than Sweden. Thats why its surprising me now. Well in a way it doesnt surprise me ... Henrik Larsson is an extremely awesome player, same with Henke & Zlatan. But then again .. Denmark also has great players like Tomasson, Grønkjær, and Gravesen who now plays for Real Madrid (that'll hopefully boost up the team) .. Also, we won EU92 .. when was the last time Sweden won anything at all? ;)

Does anyone have any information about Peter Schmikkels son? My dad said something about him being even better, as a goalie, than Peter Schmikkel himself.. If thats true .. When will he start playing professional football?

I remember this one friendly between Finland and Latvia in the Olympic stadium in 2001. I told my Estonian friend Henri that I hope the defense of Finland keeps a special eye on Pahars (those days he was probably the hottest Baltic player in Europe having scored 14 goals last season for Southampton). What happened, of course, was that he DID score and I literally lost it. I started shouting some rather obnoxious things at Sami Hyypiä (who, btw, later on stated in an press conference that Finnish fans are NOT very nice. I hope that statement wasn't aimed at me).

Finland did win the match-up 2-1 at the end, but it wasn't a pretty game, and Marian Pahars almost kicked some Finnish ass. :D

thats also wrong, but one things for sure Sweden once (1994) was ranked the 2nd best football nation in the world. Thats still the record ;) .
1948 gold in the olympic games
1950 bronze in the world cup
1952bronze in the olympic games in Helsinki
1958 silver in the world cup
1994bronze in the world cup,
We won the group of death in world cup 2002, thats pretty good. we also won our group in the Euro 2004.
We haven't lost a game against England since the 60s, thats also kinda strong :D

Anyway, Tre kronor won over the Czech rep with 3-2. The big headlines was that 3 players in the swedish team didn't play. They spend the evening at the police station.

Southampton's Swedish midfielder Anders Svensson has signed a pre-contract agreement with former club Elfsborg.
Svensson, 28, will rejoin the club from which he joined Saints in June 2001, at the end of the current campaign.
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40815000/jpg/_40815699_jmanders203.jpg
The Swedish international's Saints contract expires at the end of the season and he was not offered a new deal by boss Harry Redknapp.

He said: "All I want to do is feel good and feel at home, but I will play with Saints until the end of the season."

Svensson, who has taken a big pay cut to return to Elfsborg, will miss the start of the Swedish season as he sees out his Southampton contract for financial reasons
Elfsborg were unable to buy out the remainder of his contract and Svensson said: "I would lose too much money if I moved now."

Despite his undoubted talents, Svensson has been unable to command a regular place in the Southampton midfield.

Svensson held a press conference in Sweden where he said: "I think I'm a better footballer when I'm feeling good and having fun when I play.

"I think I'm going to have that here in Elfsborg

I general you can also say the olypics is the big event for all the boring sports there is not exciting enough to have their own event.

I remember team Denmark winning the U.S in the world championships a couple of years ago. That was quite a shocker to be sure, and proved that Denmark definitely has great potential. Of course, the world championships don't match the World Cup of Hockey in terms of number super stars playing, but still, it's a good tournament. I think it's just up to Denmark if they want to be one of the so called big hockey nations.

Oh, and just a side note, Denmark has a pretty decent goalie. Can't remember his name, though.

On the final day Sweden defeated rivals Finland 5-1 in front of over 13 000 fans in Stockholm Globe Arena. This year's Sweden Hockey Games set a new attendance record for the tournament with a total of 57 845 spectators.

Sweden won the tournament, the last in this season's Euro Hockey Tour, before Czech Republic, Russia finished third and Finland last. This also means that Russia will play Sweden in the Euro Hockey Tour final.

Sweden's Henrik Zetterberg was top scorer and best forward of the tournament. Another Swede, Henrik Lundqvist was the best goalie while the Czech Marek Zidlicki was best defender

Yeah I remember that. It was back in 2002. Denmark beat USA 5-2, and tied Canada 2-2.. which was a humongous success for us, since the last time we faced Canada in the 1950's we lost 57-0 (biggest loss in the history of hockey).

I really hope Denmark becomes one of those big hockey nations. And after the NHL went on strike, i heard quite a few NHL players went to danish clubs .. which is awesome .. and which will most likely make the danish players even better :)

Only one NHL player is now in Denmark, Todd Simpson from Ottawa Senators. He plays on the best Danish Team ( ;) ), Herning Bluefox.

The first 36 games in the Danish league have just ended, and this friday playoff will start. Here's how the standing was after all the games (notice last years winner Esbjerg didn't make the playoff as the only team, "only" the 8 first does):

Herning Bluefox 78p
AaB 67p
Herlev Eagels 57p
Nordsjælland Cobras 53p
Rødovre Mighty Bulls 52p
Frederikshavn Whitehawks 48p
Odense Bulldogs 45p
SønderjyskE 44p
Esbjerg Oilers 42p

The quarter finals are:

Herning-Rødovre
AaB-SønderjyskE
Herlev-Odense
Nordsjælland-Frederikshavn

Some info about the most winning team in Danish Icehockey, Herning Bluefox (which of course also happens to be my team. I also played icehockey myself there in the befinning of the 1990s):

Champions: '73, '77, '87, '91, '92, '94, '95, '97, '98, '01 og '03
Silver: '75, '85, '90, '93 og '00
Bronze: '74, '81, '89, '96 og '02

No Dane has ever played in NHL, but I hope well see one soon. One of the biggest talents, (old Herning player;) ) Frans Nielsen, who plays in Malmö right now, was drafted by NewYork Islanders 2 years ago, and hopefully he'll soon get a change to play there:)

And yes, we've done okay at the World Cup in last two times (the only times we've been in the A group), but we're of course still very far from the big hockey nations. We just missed the Olympics Qual this weekend, by loosing to both Norway (GRRR) and Switzerland (and won against Japan).

Enough Bluefox bragging for now:D

BTW, that goalie Moolio is talking about is probably Peter Hirsch.

That's the guy. He's a really good goalie, I hope he get's to play in Finland some day. A goalie of his calibre would make probably around € 60-100k in the Finnish league a season, perhaps even more. Dave Stathos (a Canadian goalie) made around €170k a season playing in Helsinki, and this season he sucked. Peter Hirsch would bring more colour to our league. We've already had player exports from the U.S, Canada, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Latvia, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Russia and probably some that I can't remember.

No, the winner of the group will face the winner of the other group in the final. Most likely it will be IFK Göteborg.
FCK allready beat IFK twice in this tournament, so if FCK quailifies for the final they must be favourites to win it.

Indoor bandy is the fastest growing sport in Norway. Volleyball and dancing is increasing quite fast too. These 3 sports each had a growth of active players on 30% last year. 50 new indoor bandy clubs started last year. And 20 new ones so far this year. There are now more than 20.000 indoor bandy players. That drowns in comparison with football naturally.

Here are the most popular sports and the least popular sports, by number of active players in 2004, and change from 2003.

Agreed, Rosenborg needs to get off the throne for a while. And they will. They are in serious trouble. Their team is full of old-boys, they have not managed to replace them with new young local talents. They nearly lost it to Vålerenga last year though, but won it back on overtime in the last match!

creamed?? We only got creamed once, and that was against Sweden ... the other games we only lost by 1 goal ;) And I heard that Denmark actually scored 2 goals against Ukraine, but the referee didnt count it becuase he thought the player was offside, even though he wasnt...
And Denmark cant really be THAT bad in hockey since they did make it to the IHWC ... Only 16 countries made it, and Denmark was one of them .. so thats not too bad .. right? :)

Well, the groups are been put together from teams of 4 levels of strenght - those are gathered according to wolrd ranking or results in last WC, not sure. So when making the groups they first make four jars of 4 countries with similar strength in each and then pick of from each jar and that's the group ;) So in Denmarks case - Sweden was from the strongest jar, Finland from the 2nd strongest, Ukraine from the 3rd jar and finally Denmark came out from the weakest jar. But everyone who watches ice-hockey knows that nowadays the stregth of each country is becoming very similar to each other. Of course there are favourites, (Canada, Sweden, Czech) but pretty much any other country can make them sweat and even make them cry. :D
Look at Latvia's game versus USA - Latvia has some 10  ice-rings at the moment, USA probably thousands. but still in this game Latvia owned them, especially in 1st and 2nd period, and only referee actually saved them, by not counting two latvian 100% goals.... (3:1 USA won, last goal of USA in last seonds in empty net)

Some game, huh? I dunno if there has ever been a scoreless tie in the history of ice-hockey WC, but this match-up certainly was an eventful scoreless tie. I remember Irbe playing in the Mighty Ducks in the nineties, and today he gave a glimpse of those days. Oslo soccer club Lyn sent their talented young soccer star John Obi Mikel to a secret location for five days after announcing that he'd signed on with Manchester United. Alleged threats had come into Lyn's Oslo office, and club officials feared for Mikel's safety.

The 18-year-old Mikel also was worried about the threats. Newspaper Aftenposten reported Tuesday that he thus was quickly and quietly driven up to Oslo's fashionable - and highly secure - Holmenkollen Park Hotel in the hills above the capital, instead of going home to his house in suburban Bekkestua.

http://cache.aftenposten.no/multimedia/archive/00273/145437a053_fdsfffds_273532h.jpg

It remains unclear where the threats came from, but it is clear that Mikel's transfer to Manchester United has angered his former agents and officials at rival English soccer club Chelsea. Most thought that Mikel, originally from Nigeria, would end up at Chelsea before Manchester United snatched him up.

It's been reported that several people may have lost money on Mikel's surprise transfer. Before he joined Lyn last summer, two agents had allegedly secured deals with the then-underage player. One of the contracts reportedly secured one of the agents 30 percent of Mikel's gross earnings.

Lyn ignored those agents and signed a deal directly with Mikel's parents when they brought Mikel to Oslo. Late last month, just after Mikel had turned 18 and therefore was of legal age in Norway, Lyn's attorney wrote letters to the agents cancelling the contracts on behalf of Mikel. That same evening, Mikel signed on with Manchester United.

Another agent who allegedly tried to visit Mikel at his suburban Oslo home, Jack Karadas, refused to respond to questions from Aftenposten.

Mikel, meanwhile, is back home again but Lyn has tightened security around him. Lyn director Morgan Andersen said he's most keen that players get to choose which club they want to join.

"He's God's gift to his family, and now has the possibility to support both himself and those closest to him," Andersen said. "It's not right that other people run off with large portions of the earnings for his talent."

The tug-of-war over Nigerian soccer talent John Obi Mikel has developed into an international drama, and now mighty Manchester United trainer Alex Ferguson is headed to Oslo to protect the club's treasured investment

Mikel currently plays for Oslo club Lyn and has been at the center of a massive controversy after his sale to Manchester United was announced just after the Nigerian turned 18 on 22 April.

Several football agents claim to have contracts with Mikel - signed when he was a minor and co-signed by his father - and Manchester United rivals and English Premier League champions Chelsea are also squabbling over the player.

Mikel had been linked to Chelsea and the news that he had been sold to Manchester United resulted in threats to both Mikel and his family that convinced Lyn to implement security precautions and move the teenager to a hotel.

Lyn director Morgan Andersen has argued that the Oslo club is trying to help Mikel, who they say was under a "slave contract" with earlier agreements and would have been paying any earnings to agents.

Andersen reportedly convinced Mikel to break his former agreements when he legally came of age, and then signed a direct deal with Manchester United.

On Wednesday Mikel, who has begun to go missing from Lyn training meetings, preferred the company of Nigerian agent John Shittu and began to express his dissatisfaction with the situation Lyn has put him in.

Ferguson was scheduled to arrive in Oslo on Thursday afternoon in order to try and clear up the chaos directly, and prevent Mikel from vanishing.

Mikel did not appear for training with his Lyn teammates on Thursday morning.

"First and foremost this is tragic for the lad. But if he would rather play for Chelsea than United we have to ask ourselves why," said Lyn's new coach Henning Berg, a former defensive back for Manchester United under Alex Ferguson.

None of Mikel's Nigerian housemates knew where he was on Thursday morning and director Andersen was also uninformed.

"Group B includes Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine and Italy"

Man, Sweden got lucky. There's not one even remotely competitive team in that group besides Sweden. Okay, Suisse and Ukraine aren't bad, but they don't compare to the big seven.

Why aren't any of all the FCK people here talking about the result of yesterdays big game:? :D

Brøndby beat the crap out of FCK, 5-0 ;)

I'm not a Brøndby fan AT ALL (neither FCK) but I surely hope they'll take the title this year, that's our (FCM) change of playing UEFA Cup next season. :)

:runaway:

It was a huge mistake by Backe to put an unfit Bo Svenson on the field, and he made it bigger because Christian Traore wasn't on the bench so there was no replacement.

And Janne Saarinen should take the first plane back to Finland he is completely useless.

Finland? Wasn't he playing in Germany before moving to Denmark?
