Providence is one of my favorite skylines, maybe beacuse I live near there and go there so much. That site on the side of I-95 between the Westin Hotel and the State House has been replaced by a large beautiful mall.

james2390 July 28th, 2003, 04:55 AM beatiful seaside city
Marybeth July 28th, 2003, 10:50 PM looks like a nice charming New England city, BUT, for a metro population of between 1.2 million and 1.6 million (depending on what criteria you use), it's skyline is very weak.
I give the skyline a 3.5

For a small city, lucky that all the taller ones are clustered together very well to create a feeling of density. Has a nice profile with the differing style of buildings. But individually, they seem old and not too imaginitive. Needs more!
tocoto February 1st, 2004, 01:42 AM Providence has become such a cool city. The skyline is OK. It's stunted because Providence is so close to Boston. Although it's not officially part of the Boston metro, it is part of the metro for all intents and purposes. The city at street level is great in some areas. The built up area is quite large with a nice size dowtown with many architecturally interesting buildings. Providence is easily the second most vibrant city in new england after boston.

They may look cool, but try driving on them! You're in for quite a ride!
This is the capital city of my state, and the closest major city to where I live. I think it has a very nice charm, and being on the water, it is a beautiful city and well kept secret. I give it a 7/10. It is a very nice place even if its skyline is nowhere as large as those of larger cities.
mauiboy63sea July 15th, 2004, 07:42 AM Drove through Prov in late summer 2003. It seemed like a nice town and wished we spend more time there. I remember downtown was pretty cramped, which was surprising since it's not a large city. They say Providence is going through a renaissance, playing up to the advantage of the riverfront. I hope to visit sometime soon. As for ratings, sorry NE I can only give it a 4 due to the lack of tall buildings and more low density encirling the CBD. I really wish I could give this town a higher ratings. The TV show really gave it RI a boost. I think it will only get better.
Palladin July 15th, 2004, 08:07 AM I love this Skyline, becouse I see much on tele-film.
LouisvilleJake January 5th, 2005, 02:48 AM awesome awesome awesome city. skyline is small, but I like it too. 7.5/10
i_am_hydrogen January 5th, 2005, 11:03 AM For a city that small, it's nice to see a few tall buildings, but in the grand scheme of skylines, it's marginal at best: 3.5/10.
hauntedheadnc January 6th, 2005, 04:48 AM A pleasing skyline. A handful of towers rising out of a densely packed historic core. I like it! An 8.
Chumbawumba January 6th, 2005, 06:03 PM Providence is the closest big city to me and i love the city it's skylie is kina weak for a 1.5 metro but other then that its a very nice city and very much on an upswing.
7.5 just because its skyline isn't as big as it could and should be.
Blahb January 8th, 2005, 04:45 AM I rate it a 7. It's pretty damn good for a small city in the smallest state in the country. But it's not very tall. But it does look pretty at night.
Fear of Heights May 12th, 2005, 11:21 PM Hideous!!!! I gave it a 3. The fact that it has water nearby is the only redeeming quality I see. Hideous mix of buildings. I look at this skyline and I picture fat, pasty white, tan starved liberals with incredibly annoying accents stolling through downtown with their noses in the air.
MattSal May 16th, 2005, 01:52 AM Looks pretty cool. I give it a 6.5/10.

Dortmund2512 May 19th, 2005, 08:41 PM a nice small skyline but not more... 4/10
megad May 20th, 2005, 01:12 PM Providence's skyline will look different soon as it continues to grow
As best as I can tell, this is how our height ranking will soon look:
428ft. Bank of America ("Superman") Building
410ft. One Financial Plaza ("Hospital Trust Tower")
400+ft. OneTen Westminster
???ft. Second Westin Tower
329ft. Westin Providence
311ft. Textron Tower
285ft. 50 Kennedy Plaza
235ft. WaterPlace Tower
223ft. The State House
220ft. The Biltmore
216ft. The County Courthouse
213ft. WaterPlace Tower
185ft. First Baptist Church
180ft. Brown Sciences Library
175ft. Dominica Manor Federal Hill
NEW BUILDINGS IN RED
The condos in the Power Block at about 25-27 floors should fall in around somewhere between the 2nd Westin Tower and 50 Kennedy Plaza, 250-300-ish feet.
There's word of some sort of spire being added to the plans for OneTen Westminster, there's an outside chance that it could be taller than the Superman Building (becoming the city's new tallest) depending on how big that spire goes.
atlan May 20th, 2005, 01:20 PM In my opinion, the typical american city. In Europe it would be a great skyline.

Nouvellecosse June 17th, 2005, 04:07 PM Why does everyone think this city is so small? :dunno: A metro pop. of 1.3 million puts it in the same league as New Orleans, Louisville, Buffalo, Calgary and Edmonton yet all these cities have much larger skylines. Edmonton and Louis. have only two buildings taller than Prov.'s tallest, and Buffalo only one, but, according to Emporis, Ed. has 226 (completed) buildings, Louis. has 56, and Buffalo 71 while Prov. only has 28. I understand the argument about its proximity to Boston, but Hamilton is just as close to Toronto, and even it has a larger skyline (105 completed buildings) with a metro pop. of only 700k. Its tallest building is 3m shorter than Prov's though.
Despite its puny size, I do like the skyline's density, seaside setting, and historic charm, so I'll be generous with a 5.5. I also love that N.E. style of coure :cheers1:

Actually, Providence has a metro population of over 1.6 million under the new MSA guidelines. The metro includes all of Rhode Island and Bristol County, MA. It's in the same league as Milwaukee, Columbus, Indy, and San Antonio.
With a total of only 1601 square miles land area, the Providence Metro is one of America's most dense at over 1000 people per square mile.

Has absolutely nothing to do with religion at all. I'm a political moderate just to the right of the middle. I was just being as stereotypical as the poster who trashed Birmingham and said how he hated Birmingham and Alabama after admitting to not having ever been to either place. The poster cast judgements on the place based on every tired stereotyped passed on as fact for years by elitists like himself. He was on here gushing over how great Providence was. The pictures aren't impressive in my humble opinion. Shocking that a lib would turn a less than gushing opinion of a city in the all knowing Northeast into a hate crime.
P.S. Isn't there a Reagan/Bush is responsible for hurricanes and heart disease site for you?

P.S. Isn't there a Reagan/Bush is responsible for hurricanes and heart disease site for you?So you were being just as stereotypical to prove a point? That makes you guilty of what you are accusing the "elitist" of being. You are a conservative who is passive aggressive. A political moderate would never make the last statement about Bush. Dead giveaway. Providence is a nice city and so is Birmingham IMO.
Fear of Heights June 1st, 2006, 01:23 AM Sort of. I'm not a W fan if that's what you mean. My comment about Reagan was in the vain of a funny SNL skit where Bush Sr. kept popping up in disguise during a debate b/w Gore and W. In that skit, a Gore supporter asked Gore about taking us back to that terrible time when Reagan was responsible for creating AIDS and homelessness. As ridiculous as that comment in that skit was, some libs probably do blame him.
I didn't want to make this a political thing. The guy's stereotypical comments just pissed me off and I had to respond.
AHHHHH June 1st, 2006, 01:40 AM 6.5/10
it seems pretty dense in the downtown (just not vertical) and because it has risd, onbe of the best art schools in the country, i'm sure it has a very active arts and culture scene, which makes it better. Also it is close to boston, ny, and the ocean
Captain Obvious June 1st, 2006, 02:43 AM Hideous!!!! I gave it a 3. The fact that it has water nearby is the only redeeming quality I see. Hideous mix of buildings.
You're dead wrong about this. While Providence has an extremely weak/short skyline, it has some stunning buildings. The overall style and architectural context of the city is very attractive. The historical housing stock is some of the best in the country.
I look at this skyline and I picture fat, pasty white, tan starved liberals with incredibly annoying accents stolling through downtown with their noses in the air.
Haha ... you are actually correct about this. I'm sure that will piss people off, but it's true.
