I wasn't sure if it was the mosque on Har HaBeit or not. The perspective and angle made the golden dome look smaller than the dome of the rock. Also, the buildings to the right of the golden dome are higher in elevation than the dome itself. They also appear to be in fairly close proximity to the dome. I could not place this scene in the old city.

as i was descending to the western wall via the jewish quarter ,these three domes just array together :

the close one, stone made with the surveillance cameras looking down the western wall squre.
a minerate tower near the dome of the rock (and not part of Alaqsa mousqe).
and the golden dome of the dome of the rock itself, behind the two.

about 30,000 Canadian jews (20,000 from Toronto, 10,000 from Montreal and elsewhere) flocked to the Capital of Canada - Ottawa to voice there support for Israel..

I can always count on my friend B. Gaines to hip me to New York Times articles discussing sports, Judaism and the State of Israel (he is the one who informed me of the great piece on Bob Kraft that I posted about a few weeks back). This week, the Times ran an article describing one of soccer's greatest riddles: What's with the Ajax fans and their obsession with Judaism, or being called "the Jews," more specifically?

For those who don't keep up with European soccer, AFC Ajax Amsterdam is Amsterdam's premier soccer/football club. Although it has had some ups and downs of late, it is an internationally well-respected football club and has produced some of Europe's superstar players (and subsequently shipped them off to other teams for next to nothing, but I digress).

The focus of the article is not the football club itself but its fans, who title themselves "the Jews." Some of the more hard-core fans tattoo themselves with stars of David and drape themselves in Israeli flags. As the article describes:

Outside, souvenir stalls sold Israeli flags or flags with the Ajax logo, the head of the fabled Greek warrior, emblazoned inside the star of David. Fans arrived with hats, jackets and scarves embroidered with Hebrew writing. Until recently, the team's official web site even featured the ringing tones of Hava Nagila and other Jewish songs that could be downloaded into fans' mobile phones.

The problem is that Ajax fans' identity with Jews and all things Jewish does not stem from respect or admiration for Jews (who comprise a fairly small percentage of the fan base - though I can be included). In fact, the best comparison I can draw to explain the Ajax identification with Jews is U.S. college and professional sports teams who use Native American images as their mascots (e.g., the Washington Redskins, the Atlanta Braves, the Florida State University Seminoles and the University of Illinois Fighting Illini).

Ajax fans' adoption of Jews as their mascot, widely regarded as a curiosity at worst, has over the last few years taken a turn for the ugly. Leave it to the Europeans to take any opportunity to dive into anti-Semitic behavior, as Ajax games have been marred lately by anti-Semitic chants by opposing teams' fans that reference the Nazis and Hamas (at least those people see the connection there). It has gotten so bad, in fact, that the club is now trying to turn back decades of tradition and get their fans to find a new non-Jewish identity.

That may be something of a quixotic task; however it has been done in other parts of the world. Specifically, in the mid to late 90s there were rumblings in the State of New York to the effect that maintaining Native American mascots for colleges and universities may be a violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (also, I believe, an executive order by the Governor sealed the deal). Most of the offending schools didn't wait to see what would happen and voluntarily changed their mascots. That is why the erstwhile St. John's Redmen are now the Red Storm and the Colgate Red Raiders are now just the Colgate Raiders.

The problem here is that Ajax has not officially adopted the Jews as its mascot, so even if laws were passed, they would be hard to enforce (though I strongly suspect that if Ajax adopted "the Muslims" or "the North Africans" as its unofficial mascot, the EU would find some way to put a stop to it).

Generally, the article is well-written and informative. I am surprised that it states that no one has a clue as to how the association between Ajax and the Jews developed. It took my father (Shai's too), himself a native of Amsterdam, about 5 minutes to come up with this link , which provides an extensive history of Ajax from its founding circa 1900 to the present. Included is this article , which describes the Ajax connection to Judaism and provides this explanation by Ajax historian Evert Vermeer:

The opponents' supporters used to arrive at Weesperpoort Station, an area in which a lot of Jewish street-hawkers were working. That's why people started saying, 'We're going to the Jews.' But the club itself did not have a Jewish culture at all before the Second World War.
It seems like a plausible explanation; maybe the Times just didn't have the budget to check really obvious sources for guidance on the whole Ajax-Jewish enigma.
