View Full Version : Borobudur, Largest Buddhist Monument on Earth

Borobodur Temple complex is one of the greatest monuments in the world. It is of uncertain age, but thought to have been built between the end of the seventh and beginning of the eighth century A.D. For about a century and a half it was the spiritual centre of Buddhism in Java, then it was lost until its rediscovery in the eighteenth century.
The structure, composed of 55,000 square meters of lava-rock is erected on a hill in the form of a stepped-pyramid of six rectangular storeys, three circular terraces and a central stupa forming the summit. The whole structure is in the form of a lotus, the sacred flower of Buddha.
For each direction there are ninety-two Dhyani Buddha statues and 1,460 relief scenes. The lowest level has 160 reliefs depicting cause and effect; the middle level contains various stories of the Buddha's life from the Jataka Tales; the highest level has no reliefs or decorations whatsoever but has a balcony, square in shape with round walls: a circle without beginning or end. Here is the place of the ninety-two Vajrasattvas or Dhyani Buddhas tucked into small stupas. Each of these statues has a mudra (hand gesture) indicating one of the five directions: east, with the mudra of calling the earth to witness; south, with the hand position of blessing; west, with the gesture of meditation; north, the mudra of fearlessness; and the centre with the gesture of teaching.
Besides being the highest symbol of Buddhism, the Borobodur stupa is also a replica of the universe. It symbolises the micro-cosmos, which is divided into three levels, in which man's world of desire is influenced by negative impulses; the middle level, the world in which man has control of his negative impulses and uses his positive impulses; the highest level, in which the world of man is no longer bounded by physical and worldly ancient desire.
It is devotional practice to circumambulate around the galleries and terraces always turning to the left and keeping the edifice to the right while either chanting or meditating. In total, Borobodur represents the ten levels of a Bodhisattva's life which he or she must develop to become a Buddha or an awakened one.

according to this :
Of the many Buddhist monuments and temples that exist today, perhaps none is as intriguing and well built as the ancient Buddhist monument Borobudur. Located on the Indonesian Island of Java, ancient Borobudur is the largest Buddhist monument in the world and is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It is colossal in size as it rises above the rice plains of central Java.

according to this :
Medieval Wonders
After the collapse of the great civilizations of antiquity, the memories of the destroyed ancient wonders faded. Scholars and philosophers reviewed and rewrote the lists of wonders, removing old ones and replacing them with "newly built" as tales of them spread. Over the centuries a consensus emerged in the form of the Seven Wonders of the Medieval Mind list:
Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa
Colosseum
Great Wall of China
Hagia Sophia
Leaning Tower of Pisa
Porcelain Tower of Nanjing (Nanjing, China)
Stonehenge (United Kingdom)
Borobudur (Indonesia) could also be considered.
I bold and font the main point
:):)
But maybe u also right, Borobudur is one of the 7 wonder

Yes, it's keep secret inside Indonesia. I think most of the Thai Bhuddists don't know its existence.
Indonesia's goverment should promote this place more as the tourist destination for the people around the world especially those Bhuddism country like Thailand, Vietnam, China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia.
That's will make Indonesia more interesting as well known Bali.

New attraction to be found at Borobudur
Suherdjoko, The Jakarta Post, Magelang, Central Java
Widya, a tourist from Malang, East Java, found it hard to believe the traditional vessel inside the ship museum in the Borobudur Temple compound had sailed from Bali to Accra, the capital city of Ghana in Africa.
The vessel measuring 18.29 meters long, 4.25 meters wide and 2.25 meters high is positioned in the very center of the museum, which was built in a traditional Javanese style, with a joglo roof. The museum's lighting was designed to delineate the form of the boat.
Information about the ship, Samudraraksa, displayed on a wall of the museum includes the story of its 27,000-kilometer journey from Port Benoa in Bali to Accra, Ghana. The fact the 30 gross ton boat was constructed without the use of a single nail or iron pin makes the feat seem all the more impressive.
Since the opening of the exhibit on Aug. 31 tourists have been invited to climb aboard Samudraraksa and study the equipment used during its voyage. Though, for the privilege, they are asked to pay Rp 100,000 per person.
"Many of the visitors, however, prefer to look at the exterior only. Most of them change their minds after being told they have to pay that much to have a closer look," a museum employee said.
Samudraraksa, the ship, is the pride of the museum, which is located right next to the Karma Wibangga Museum.
The ship museum comprises three main buildings.
The first is for information services, a photo display, posters, reliefs and movie screenings. The second houses the boat, while the third is for supporting activities, including offices and souvenir counters.
An English sailor's dream
It was Philip Beale, a former officer of the English navy, who first had the idea to build a real ship after being amazed by the relief of six big ships and four smaller ones on the walls of the Borobudur Temple during his visit in 1982.
The relief describes the activities of sailors of passenger ships while at sea.
It is thought the ships were carrying cinnamon from Indonesia to the western coastal areas of Africa, accounting for why the route is also known as The Cinnamon Route.
It is apparent that the relief had a strong impression on Beale, who had been on a number of international sailing expeditions including the 1979 Drake Operation to Fiji and Papua New Guinea. Twenty years later, in September 2002, he met renowned Australian ship replica maker Nick Burningham.
Burningham is also a maritime archeologist who made the replica of Dufken, the first Dutch ship to reach the Australian continent in 1606.
The following year, in December 2003, Beale and Burningham went to Kangean, a small island located some 90 kilometers north of Bali to look for a traditional shipbuilder to help them realize Beale's dream.
On the island, they met As'ad Abdullah of Pagerungan Kecil village, Sapeken, Sumenep, East Java, who had been in the ship making business since 1970. Using Burningham's design, As'ad built the ship traditionally, and thus brought the relief on Borobudur Temple into reality.
In building the boat, As'ad used only wood, bamboo and ropes as fastenings. At least seven different kinds of wood were reportedly used to build the ship.
The ship replica was designed to be able to carry as many as 16 passengers, 1,500 liters of water, 900 kilograms of rice, one ton of firewood, 0.5 ton of food and other ingredients, 0.5 tons of personal belongings and two tons of spices.
Some 26 carpenters were involved in the making of the ship that cost some Rp 250 million to finish. The making of Samudraraksa was finished in four months and six days, from Jan. 20 to May 26, 2003.
On July 15, 2003, the ship was officially launched at Port Benoa, Bali. Exactly a month later the ship was launched for the cinnamon route expedition at Marina Ancol, Jakarta by then president Megawati Soekarnoputri.
Thirteen people were selected from some 800 applicants from all over the world to join the expedition. The 13 applicants, plus two others including Philip Beale, set off for Accra, but two pulled out before reaching the final destination.
After completing the expedition, the ship was then shipped back to Indonesia to be displayed at the ship museum.
Created from a relief at Borobudur Temple it is to the temple that the ship has returned.

The best time to see and enjoy Borobudur is during sunrise. You might need to get up a little earlier but the serenity and the break of dawn really help you appreciate this wonder. You can arrange with the hotel that you are staying in Yogyakarta for this sunrise trip.

Angkat Citra Borobudur, Pemprov Jateng Gagas Waisak Skala Internasional
MAGELANG – Pemprov Jateng menggagas pelaksanaan waisak bertaraf Internasional.
"Termasuk, Negara China, Taiwan, Jepang, India, Sri Lanka, dan beberapa Negara lain," kata Ali disela-sela mendampingi Perdana Menteri Selandia Baru Helen Clark mengunjungi Candi Borobudur, Kab Magelang, Jum'at (20/7/2007)

bytheway how far from jakarta city to this temple by land trip then going to bali? never been to your country but am hoping to visi there soon... :)
From Jakarta it will take about 2 days by land. I suggest you to go from Jakarta and then stay at the city of Purwokerto on the 1st night (there is also popular tourist destination of Baturraden at the city). From Purwokerto you'll need around 1 more day to Borobudur Temple, but you may arrive there in the evening. If you want to see sunrise, then you'll need to stay on the 2nd night. Jogjakarta is a recommended place to stay... There is also Prambanan Temple (famous Hindu temple) and Sultan Palace in Jogja.
From Jogja to Bali it will take 2 days (in term of comfort journey). Maybe you can stay at Malang city then go to see sunrise (again!) at Mount Bromo. Trust me, it's worth to go there :) In the evening you'll have arrived in the Island of Gods (Bali).
Welcome then, it's time to visit Indonesia! :)

I suggest u to transit at Mount Bromo before going to Island of Gods ( Bali ). If Bali is 'Islands of Gods' , then Mount Bromo is 'Palace of Gods' :D

Akan Dibuat, Cetak Biru Candi Borobudur
Minggu, 15 Februari 2009 | 15:53 WIB
