addisonwesley September 11th, 2005, 03:31 AM I've always wondered, why is the main building of the Ontario Government so small? I like the parliament buildings in Ottawa most.
*Jarrod September 11th, 2005, 04:41 AM is the PEI one just a house?

^This is actually the Government House, residence of the lieutenant governor of PEI. The place where PEI Legislative Assembly convenes is Province House, also venue of the Charlottetown Conference.

You are to blame September 11th, 2005, 04:54 AM i vote for Quebec, and i wouldn't consider ontario's parliament small.

KGB September 11th, 2005, 05:01 AM "I've always wondered, why is the main building of the Ontario Government so small? "
Well, first of all...it's not that small....That romanesque style of architecture tends to distort the scale.
And of course, the whole Queen's Park complex is like 3 million square feet. In the city alone, the province occupies over 12 1/2 million square feet...in just the downtown core, it occupies 7 1/2 million square feet ( 5.7 million square feet of just office space).
The Ontario legislature is a completely decadent Romanesque building...far more impressive than Toronto's old city hall building (which is no slouch either). Interestingly enough, E.J. Lennox designed both the old city hall and the 1910 west wing of the Ont legislature building (which was destroyed by a fire).
It's also been immortalized on a Rush album cover....

CrazyCanuck September 11th, 2005, 05:07 AM Wow, Alberta's is really nice, I was pleasently surprised. Before I saw the post about the PEI change, I was gonna say, didn't the Fresh Prince of Bel Air live in that house? Newfoundland's just looks like an oversize school, awful.
addisonwesley September 11th, 2005, 05:57 AM Hmm yes, they chose the design of a man from Buffalo...pftt. I do realize there are the other buildings though. I do like that building just east of Queen's Park though, the one with the canons (in the Whitney block?), although it doesn't really look 'parliamentary'.
MisterPing September 11th, 2005, 06:12 AM I would have to vote for Manitoba’s government building.
It is by far the most interesting.
The building is actually a Freemasons temple.

Nate September 11th, 2005, 06:25 AM The first picture doesn't really show Saskatchewan's legislative building, so here are some extra pics:

Mock September 11th, 2005, 06:30 AM I like Newfoundland's, it's a very "powerful" looking building. They just need to get rid of the green parts and clean it up a bit.
The Parliament buildings in Ottawa are my favourite, with Alberta coming in second.
Ashok September 11th, 2005, 07:31 AM I really like Manitoba's
Joev September 11th, 2005, 07:36 AM Newfoundland's Confederation Building is unlike any of the others. (It was built in 1959 to replace the older & smaller Colonial Building constructed in 1850.)
It is sited very nicely overlooking the city, and is connected to a newer office structure.

Lucky 24 September 11th, 2005, 09:22 AM I'm going to have to go with Quebec's.
partybits September 11th, 2005, 10:11 PM Nothing will beat the Parliament building, I absolutely love the architecture. In terms of provincial buildings, B.C. & Quebec have great buildings.
I'm actually surprised how almost all of the provinces have very impressive provincial buildings, especially in Western Canada.
samsonyuen September 11th, 2005, 11:33 PM Ottawa's looks the best. Québec and Ontario's buildings are quite nice too though. The Western provinces and NB's look quite similar. Newfoundland doesn't look like a provincial legislative building at all. How do the Yukon, Nunavut and NWT buildings look?
Nate September 12th, 2005, 01:22 AM This is Nunavut's I think:

sorry I couldn't find a picture of the entire finished building.
and I could only find a picture of the interior of the Yukon's legislature:

pics up north are hard to come by :(
addisonwesley September 12th, 2005, 01:28 AM Wow, that NWT one looks quite massive from above.
WpG_GuY September 12th, 2005, 02:47 AM Wow, great thread, i've always thought Maitoba's Legislature was one of the best looking building in Canada:

Haligonian September 13th, 2005, 03:06 AM It is true that Ontario's legislature is larger than it looks. BC's legislature is also smaller than it looks, though it is an attractive building.
Province House in Halifax is the smallest legislature in the country but it was built back when most of the other capitals didn't even exist yet. It is most likely the highest-quality building from that era in the country, but the grounds could be in better shape. The South side (Joseph Howe statue) has been kept nicely but the North side and the front of the building are parking:
http://www.mrfs.net/trips/2004/Maritimes/Halifax/province_house.jpg
big W September 13th, 2005, 03:56 AM The ones in Quebec and west are all actually quite great looking buildings. Quebec City, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Edmonton and Victoria are all lucky. I have seen the 3 maritime capitals as well and they are all on such a smaller scale when compared with the others. I have never seen the one in St Johns or the 3 territories, but I do think the one in Yellowknife looks kinda cool as its like an igloo in a way (it is up in the north mind you). But in the end Ottawa and Parliament Hill win hands down. No provincial building is even close in my books.
addisonwesley September 13th, 2005, 04:17 AM BC's legislature looks small!? What?! I saw a program on the building of it, and it said the man who designed and watched over its construction stole some things from it, like a fireplace.
algonquin September 13th, 2005, 04:35 AM Gotta go with Parliament Hill...
Saskatchewans parliament would be my second vote... a very beautiful building.
The one in Iqaluit looks pretty cool!
TB September 16th, 2005, 06:44 AM i gonna go with New Brunswick's in Fredericton .... mostly because i miss it and it is in my hometown :p
http://www.pbase.com/mlberube/fredericton
this is after Ottawa of course...
.affed September 18th, 2005, 12:48 AM None is as beautiful as the building where our representatives sit to legislate and debate the future of our glorious federation. None beat Parliament Hill in the nation's capital.
1ajs September 19th, 2005, 06:24 AM my vote was for the manitoba ledgislative building
