Hmm..

Well... I guess it always help if you have a panorama mode on your camera. This is what I got by using the Panorama mode (Canon A80, without a tripod):

http://img397.imageshack.us/img397/7003/dsad3lt.png

...And this is what I got without the Panorama mode (Panasonic FZ5, without a tripod):

http://img397.imageshack.us/img397/8946/dsa4wy.png

Well... I'm only 14 years old and my parents gave me around $600 dollars CDN to buy a new camera as a birthday present. I went way over budget with the FZ5, so I currently don't have enough money to purchase a tripod. However, this is what I got with my "homemade" tripod:

http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/7585/stitched0022gh.png

My "homemade" tripod ;):

http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/2455/thin0115ws.jpg

As you can see, there are hardly any messups visible on the last pic, even without the panorama mode. This is because I didn't have to worry about messing up the height differentials between each picture.

To conclude, I guess a tripod does help when taking panoramas. I usually end each picture with some kind of a landmark so its easier when I'm taking the following picture to find where the preceding picture ended.

^^ Well... thats my amateur opinion right there. I hope it helped you a bit.

Hey, I'm 14 too! Here is a panorama I made with PAINT on my computer. My 3.2 mega pixel camera has no panorama mode :(

Of course it helps with a tripod, but you dont "need" it... I took quite a few good panorama pics without any tripod:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/DLL10101/canadausatrip1/IMGP0116.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b186/DLL2/toronto2/IMGP0197.jpg
With or without a tripod, make sure you get atleast 20% of the "image" in the same picture.. that way its a lot easier when they get overlapped.. also, the best way to make panos is with panorama programs, like The Panorama Factory, which is extremely easy and works very well. There really is no specific technique to use.. just practice! :)

This is probably obvious....but dont use automatic mode on your camera...or the photos will come out being different colours. Use manual mode if you have one

I use Panorama Maker 3 to make my panoramas, download a trial here (http://www.arcsoft.com/support/downloads/demoversion.asp?title=7).

Some exemples, all panoramas is taken and made by me with Panorama Maker 3.

I suck at panos, for some reason, it might be my shaky hands :D. I'll try to get myself a tripod in the future.

My brother took this picture, but it came from my camera. I used some other Panorama program that I forgot but it wasn't a Panorama Maker because the result is more distorted when I reuploaded.

I used Arcsoft Pano Maker... Some tips regarding photography: Use a tripod to minimize movement in vertical direction (if making a horizontal pano), try keeping the exposure values as close to each other as possible (exposure lock). The best tip i can give you is to wait for the right moment to take the picture. I've waited a couple of hours for the sun to go down. It's just as with normal photography, lightning is the key thing! Keep that in mind.

I use Canon Photostitch, included in the Canon camera software but I assume it can be downloaded too.

My little tip to have nearly always the same colors (in fact brightness and contrast) when you use an automatic mode: Begin your pano with the picture in its center, and always use the auto-focus on the same point.
