The government building poll in the main Canada section prompted me to make this thread/poll.

When I was part of a high school round table discussion with the Premier we had it at the Legislative building, and while there we got a tour. (it's VERY nice)

I don't have pictures of the interior really... but I was given a book about the Saskatchewan Legislative building... this book has pictures of proposals for the building that didn't make it.

So in this poll there will be spaces for each of the proposals and also for the rendition that was built. Choose which one you think looks the best. The name on the picture is that of the architecture firm who made it. A side note... these are from a book like I said, and since I don't have a scanner I had to take pictures of them with my camera, so the tilting might be a bit odd because I had to avoid the glare on the page. I also posted a link to a larger version of the picture so those that are interested can see the detailing of the renderings better.

I think the chosen design is the best one. #1 is too....asian. I don't like the dome on #2. #3 and #4 remind me alot of the US Capitol for some reason, so they are out. #5 looks too much like the ones in Eastern Canada, so that's gone. #6 is just plain weird.

I prefer the chosen design, but as for proposals that were passed on I pick proposal #1

3, 4 and 5 are my favorite ones that didn't make it but the chosen design is the best by far. It's one of my favorite canadian government buildings.

1's really neat. The 3rd one is nice too, reminds me of the St. Paul's dome in London or the US Capitol building.

For me I love the 1st one... I think I like it a bit more than the one they chose, which also is beautiful ;).

Number 2 is also nice, but I dislike the top of the dome... it needs something else to finish it off.

Number 3 is just too simple; nothing really great about it.

I like #4 as well, but the flag poles on the ends of the buildings could be taken off.

For some reason #5 reminds me of one of those really large American high schools... ones that you would see in the movies from the 50s-70s.

I dont really like the centre portion of #6... plus if that was built I don't think it would have lived through the Cyclone.

(The building was pretty much completed when the Regina Cyclone hit, and it came out with only minor damages. In my book about the building it also says that the windspeeds went up to 500mph... but that is also debated to whether it is true or not)

When I have some more time/not feeling so lazy, I'll put in some other interesting pictures from the book.

I side with the chosen one. That 8 sided dome really does if for me.

Luckily Saskatchewan ended up with one of the most impressive Legislative Building's as it is. Lucky Regina! It's worthy of being the Parliament Building.

Well I have more pictures for you people from the book... with some extra ones on the dome, since you all seem to like that part so much:

The plans of the winning entry:

Some constructions shots, showing progress on the dome:

Completed... looks kind of lonely don't you think:

The aftermath of the Regina Cyclone(with some text talking about the damage (you can see the legislative building in the top left corner):

More dome shots:

They used to have the top (which is supposed to resemble a lanturn) open to the public, but closed it off in 1968 due to concerns over safety:

Self-explanitory:

Some information about the details of the building (take not of the fountain, I just read about it today when I took the picture):

Once again, these are digital pictures of a book, so I appologize for the strange angles/uneven-ness since I had to move it around to remove glare.

I think the current design is nice. I would've also chosen either #2 or #5. I think it needed something a bit more unique, and the ones I mentioned were just that, even if they weren't the most beautiful.

So this cyclone... was a tornado. Right? or a big storm?

^Yes a cyclone is another name for a tornado.

^Very nice old construction pics Nate.

And it's a really beautiful old building.

It looks like there was nothing around it at all when it was built.

BTW, I just noticed, I chose Proposal #3 which was by Rattenbury, who designed the BC Legislature, but it looks quite different.

^^The entire city of around 30,000 was on the other side of Wascana Creek. The Legislative building was one of the first things on that side.

I would have loved to see #3 built, but I really do like the choosen design as well.

I have to go with Number 1 for its utter Grandness , on scale and decidence, it beats the others . Number 5 is close as well, but number 3 looks U.S.

It looks a great building. Its' dome reminds me a bit of the High Court Building in Bulawayo in Zimbabwe:

I think one of our architects must have copied part of the design from you.

the chosen design was best....the others were either too Asian or too American, particularly like Capital Hill.
