Why is it that our private hire taxi's resemble those (and are quite often put to shame by) third world countries?

Not strictly a street scene as it's taken from space, but a rather good view all the same:

I always think it feels slightly American with the wide pavements, but hey, town in general had an unmistaken buzz about it today even if the sky was a tad grey, everywhere I walked was just a seething mass of people and activity

Taken me a while to reply to this! Manchester's always busier on a Friday. It always has a really good buzz, and on Saturdays too, although on Sats, you don't get the added activity of all the office workers. It kind of reaches a crescendo towards the weekend.

London was like this too when I lived there. It was strange to see that tube passengers were a completely different bunch at the weekend.....i.e. suburbanites and half the home counties coming in to shop etc..!

The current one looking down Oxford Road isnt that great is it...
If they swung the camera to the right, you would be able to see the 'cluster' with all the old highrises, but if you swung it to the left, you would see Beetham, CJC, GNT and eventually 1HS :)
Take your pick ;)

Apparently the guys who are doing this place have first refusal on the remaining arches, that are all owned by the same group (ASK I assume). Good to see life transfering accross the river and with the Greengate developments gathering pace, it will surely last this time! Brilliant!

I do like the way this part of town has turned out, its improved my view of the Arndale by some way. It's not great architecture by any means, but it is the very 'urban regeneration' we here so much about.

I hope that the whole of Withy Grove gets a boost/overhaul with the backend of Arndale being redeveloped, and the foot traffic makes it up there. Also, if the main bus routes from north and east are redirected to Shudehill instead of Piccadilly Gardens, won't this create a massive increase in foot traffic through the northern quarter? The result of that would be astounding, for many streets would suddenly come to life for the first time in years.

(Or am I just being slow? The whole lot has yet to be explained to me, despite my bus stopping there.)

I love that first pic Latic, some real density there of both cars and buildings. And fancy Chinese arches.

Its cool the way the Bank Of Scotland building sticks out like a sore thumb along Deansgate amidst all the old concrete and brick buildings. But like a nice shiny sore thumb though. :)

The RBS building is one of my favourites too. It may not be especially tall but it does look very smart and original.

I can't wait until the scaffolding finally comes off of the John Ryland library; seeing that old ominious Gothic building and the glass RBS next to each other will make for a fascinating and contrasting view.

the screen on the printworks? is it broken?

Northbeach
January 9th, 2006, 11:20 AM
Probably. Seems to be a recurring theme/shame in this city - things never get looked after once the opening razzmatazz has subsided. Also see: Arndale Crown lights; Hulme Arch lights (finally had their light bulbs changed after a couple of years out of action); Piccadilly Gardens fountains; the hanging ditch 'stream' works occasionally.
Small details but flippin noticeable.

The Council needs to invest in streets like this and pave them over. Get rid of the nasty double yellows and the city centre would be a much nicer place.
http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j270/caw12345/P3310039copy.jpg

Also need to get rid of ground carparking like this and make our public spaces more enjoyable for pedestrians. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j270/caw12345/P3220051copy.jpg

The road on the left here is my personal favourite biggest waste of space road in manchester. It ruins what could be a nice area between town hall and extension and into St Peters Sq too.

I couldnt agree more. I was thinking the exact same thing walking around some of the smaller scale streets in the Northern Quarter yesterday. Parts of that district have a sort of 'old town' feel to them, vaguely reminiscent of certain contintental cities - you are away from the hustle and bustle of the main city centre, the district is more laid back and quieter with a distinctive character of its own with residential, cultural, retail and lesiure uses mixed together. These tiny roads with demarked vehicle and pedestrian areas are simply unnecessary.... and probably a barrier to the area's revival.

I don't like pedestrianisation at all. It's ok for side streets like King St, but thoroughfares like Market St weren't originally designed for it.

I think access-only (not total pedestrianisation) has been completely wrong for Cross St in particular. Pre-bomb, there was a real discernable buzz to the Cross St/Market St junction. It had traffic, the 40s buses, and throngs of pedestrians.......effectively linking the two busiest parts of town, it was almost the Piccadilly Circus/Times Sq of Manchester.

During the reconstruction, and ever since, it's become subdued and quiet in comparison.

Now that the Inner Ring Road is complete, there's no real reason for it.

SleepyOne
April 19th, 2006, 12:26 AM
Yes I dislike Market Street too and whilst pedestrianisation hasn't helped its the single-use (i.e. retail) and the oppressive form of the Arndale Centre which contributes most to the street's bad character.

I'd love to use buses, trains and trams more often, but every day I go from Stalybridge to Rochdale, then to Bury or Bolton for a meeting, back to Rochdale for work, then home to Stalybridge, then to Mottram to pick the the young'un up, back to Stalybridge, then to Ashton for cubs or football lessons or sometimes to Dukinfield for guitar lessons, and finally back to Stalybridge.

Having not been in Manchester from September until I went in today, I have to say I thoroughly agree. You can look at all the pictures you like but there's absolutely nothing that beats seeing with your own eyes. I was hugely impressed with the CJC coming into Victoria by train. Looked absolutely huge and just commanded your attention. Similarly, walking up Deansgate, Beetham made my jaw drop. It looks like a strong gust of wind might knock it over on some of the pics, but on street level it seemed to have the solidity of a mountain.

Of course the reverse is also true. Elizabeth House looks twice the pile of cack in real life. :)

Thanks a lot Roly - that Church is a gem isn't it. I must have walked past there gazillions of times as a student and not even noticed it existed!

P.S. Isn't is funny how people give you strange looks when you walk around Manchester taking snaps, trying to figure you out who you're taking pics for!

You should really go in a have look around the Catholic Church of The Holy Name of Jesus (aka 'that church on Oxford Road')- its even better inside!
http://www.holyname.co.uk/
The tower was added much later in the 1920's and was meant to have a spire but someone did the maths and it was soon realised that a spire would be too heavy for the exisiting structure so it was abandoned. Hence the rather truncated look of the tower.

Yeah - I resize and crop of photoshop - I'm not the best at framing when I take a pic (especially when people are walking past and just wanna take the pic quickly!) so I tend to crop and frame it better on photoshop.

I try not to be too judgemental and photograph some buildings i dont like but fall in to my frame of interest.
Its important to record the unloved stuff aswell especially since Moberley Tower is coming down very soon.
Besides this shot was for a job i did last year - i dont think the client particularly wanted this but i stuck it in anyway!
I think it looks quite good from this angle and in that light though.

Mitzi? Yeah i am a bit of a fan so 'big her up' at every opportunity.

Thanks for the photo BG - I always think in time Heaton Park could become our own version of New York's Central park. Our city is expanding as fast in the North (for the first time on 50 years or so)as it is in the South - because of new deveolpments such as Greeen Quarter/ City Central / Artisan/ Ancoats etc - plus the gaps being filled with an array of new devopments on Bury New Rd . Heaton Park is a great asset to MCR and MCC has spent a lot of money on redeveloping it recently.

Top photo's, crush.

They should put up a big 'canal street' sign on the wall at the entrace of the road, on Minshull Street.

Imagine coming out of Piccadilly and over the funky new bridge at Piccadilly place. This points you exactly in the direction of Canal street and next to the entrance there is a low brick wall, above the canal itself, that is perfect for a sign.

It would be good for the tourists, beacuse canal street is quite easy to miss if you don't know where you're going. With PP feeding people into that direction from the bridge it would be a natural destination and all the bars could get more punters.
