View Full Version : Orthodox monesteries of Bosnia and Herzegovina ™
Medofish September 13th, 2005, 10:26 PM Welcome!
This thread is about Serb, Ukrainian and Russian Orthodox architecture in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
It is well known that first Slavs, Serbs and Croats came in these areas in 7th century. They were pagans at first, later they accepted Christianity. Croats accepted Christianity from Rome, Serbs from Byzantine. This thread is about sactal architecture of these who accepted Christianity from Byzantine - Serbs [and others] and their sacral architecture in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Skaros September 14th, 2005, 11:54 PM Saray very nice thread ! Bravo! :)
I will ask you some more things though if it is possible :
1) Some better photos (like Monastery Hercegovačka Gračanica) if it is possible
2) Some very short facts about each monastery , so we learn also a bit of history, the life of the monks , or which Saint is the patron of each monastery!
Sarajka September 15th, 2005, 12:11 AM Welcome!

Your best introduction yet - but still a little off. Serbs and Croats didn't come to Bosnia, Slavs did. Bosnia developed independent of both nations at the same time Croatia and Serbia developed, although it was more closely aligned with Roman Catholicism and, consequently, Croatia.
Just because we converted to Islam during the Ottoman Empire doesn't mean we don't have a pre-Ottoman history of our own, we do. :) Most Bosnians - of all faiths - are descendant from the same Slavs who originally settled Bosnia; not those who settled Serbia and Croatia.
Beyond that - nice. The pictures are a bit shitty but they're enough to tell the monasteries are nice. I like the ones in Trebinje and Teslic the best. :)

Znao sam da ces da se javis u vezi ovoga... And Bosnia wasn't more closely aligned with Roman Catholicism, it was more aligned with Serbian Empire , which means Serbian ortodox church( There was a king of Serbs and Bosnia Tvrtko Kotromanic (Bosnian or Bosniak however u want), which was crowned in Serbian ortodox church Žiča). :)
And, when I mentioned, I am adding monastery Žiča here,
It is a Serbian ortodox monastery between Kraljevo and Mataruška banja, in southern Serbia( Raška oblast) , built by Saint Sava and Stefan Prvovenčani (serbian monarchs) from 1207-1217 ...
According to me, it is one of the most beautiful serbian monasteries with Gračanica....

Nate September 15th, 2005, 01:30 AM ^Why are you posting a church from Serbia in this thread? It's beautiful, yes... but this thread is supposed to be dedicated to the Churches in Bosnia and Herzegovina...
Sarajka September 15th, 2005, 01:36 AM ^ And Tvrtko Kotromanic was a Catholic. And he was King of Bosnia and Serbs for a reason. Just because someone conquers you doesn't mean he is you. ;)
And Bosnia was more closely aligned with Croatia, straight through until we converted to Islam. Our last Queen, Katarina Velika, is burried in Rome - not Moscow. ;)
EDIT: Anyhow, that's all I have to say about it. I'm not trying to change your mind, just making sure the truth is hinted at enough that any forumers who don't already know it, and need confirmation, know what to look for. :)
I'll stop this conversation now before it ruins the thread and everyone blames me - even though it all comes out of an inaccurate introduction.
estavisti September 15th, 2005, 02:30 AM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tvrtko
Just because someone conquers you doesn't mean he is you.
"He took on the prefix Stephanus (Stjepan) when he became king" i.e. the Nemanjic "title" ;)
"He was the son of Vladislav Kotromanić and Jelena Šubić, and was descended from the founder of Serbia's Nemanjid dynasty" ;)
"Tvrtko assisted Knez Lazar Hrebeljanović in neighboring Serbia, in consolidating his control of the Serb territories to the east" ;)
"He maintained his alliance with Prince Lazar, and sent an army, headed by Vlatko Vuković, which fought alongside Prince Lazar at the Battle of Kosovo Polje in June 1389." ;)
"Tvrtko died in 1391, and by the end of his reign the Medieval Bosnian state reached its greatest power and territorial extent"
Sarajka September 15th, 2005, 02:35 AM ^ Doesn't change any of what I said. ;)
But fine, you all win. The land is yours. Come kill me. :)
estavisti September 15th, 2005, 02:50 AM Oh, I don't care anyway... This whole argument is a big smor anyway because we both know we're right :D
P.S. On my way, I'll be right there

BosRoker September 15th, 2005, 05:37 AM 1. For the umpteenth time, Tvrtko was crowned king of "Bosnia and Serbia", not king of "Bosnia and Serbs". If he was crowned king of "Serbs" then why wasn't he also crowned "King of Croats" since he controlled everything up to and including Split?
2. It's stupid to apply modern nationality to medieval rulers. The Bosnian kings married with members of both Croat and Serb royal families so they were actually a pretty mixed bunch by the end of it.
Sarajka September 15th, 2005, 06:33 AM ^ I learned it was "Bosnia and Serbs", probably with the same intentions in mind as you learned what you did. Since you manage to be, more or less, always right...I'll take your word for it. :D

Confusion comes from the archaic language used in the documents in question. It's just a common misconception. If you want confirmation just check Malcolm, Fine, etc.
But this is getting off topic anyways. More Orthodox monasteries please
estavisti September 15th, 2005, 08:12 AM Koga ustvari boli kurac sta "druga strana" ima da kaze? Nikoga - so let's just not talk about shit like this. I mean, I've been coming to this forum for a couple of months now and it's become such a smor in the past week or two. It's like a "How quickly can we bring politics into this?" competition in almost every thread :bash:
Nate September 15th, 2005, 08:42 AM ^^And it was returning back to the topic before your post.
as L3D3NI said... more bring on the monesteries
Medofish September 15th, 2005, 09:18 AM Hercegovačka Gračanica [Herzegovian Gračanica] is copy of Gračanica monestery in Serbia and Montenegro, Kosovo and Metohija province. It was built in 2000, in honour of Jovan Dučić. Photos of this Herzegovian pearl:

Like the one in Teslic. :) The stone, the black wood, and the design of the patio in the back are all identical to pre-Ottoman, Bosnian homes in Jajce, Travnik, etc.
NK Tomislavgrad September 19th, 2005, 09:57 AM  Miss me
So yeah I was in the brig , quite nice there . :P
I like Byzantine architecture and really admire the designs of those Orthodox Churches .
Something real quick .
Croats and Serbs settled in the Balkans with a second wave of Slavs . The first Slavs came with the Avars . Croats conquered the Avars and then assimilated the Slavs , Illyrians , and others present in modern Croatia/most of BiH . Serbs did this in Serbia and parts of BiH . So since the 7th century most of the people of Bosnia were medieval Croats and Serbs or were assimilated into them . Bosnians developed a stronger regional identity when Bosnia became a banovina in 1102 . Like Sarajka said , Bosnia had an affinity with Croatia because basically most of the people in both Cro and BiH during the time belonged to the same medieval ethnicity and religion .
Something about Tvrtko . He was crowned King of Serbia and Bosnia ( later of Croatia) Tvrtko could have been a medieval ethnic Serb in part but there is no definate evidence of that . Tvrtko's mother was Croatian ( Jelena Subic) and the Kotromanic family has unclear origins as does its founder Kotroman ( who many believe to actually be of possible Bulgarian or Avar ancestory) .
Tvrtko was not blood related to the Serbian Nemanjici . His uncle Stjepan Kotromanic who was Ban of Bosnia married Jelisaveta Nemanjic ( princess of Serbia) and thus the Serbian and Bosnian dynasties were intertwined by wedlock , rather common in the middle ages . Tvrtko most certainly felt like a Bosnian and identified with his land . He was the BOSNIAN king and recognized as such . Sarajka is correct again , he was a Catholic and a faithful one at that .

Napravit ce te ova crkva ponovo, ako bog da, i bice ljepsa nego sto je bila.
Sarajka September 21st, 2005, 12:37 AM ^ I think it's really easy for Bosniaks and Croats to want to see this church rebuilt as well. I certainly do. It's not like it's a big new one in Banja Luka or anything, it's one where we didn't lose and Serbs who were largely innocent of the JNA siege of Mostar did.
yugoboy September 21st, 2005, 01:33 AM Well...I hope it get's rebuilt very soon.:)
I feal the same sence of sadness when I see these pictures, as I do for the Ferhadija Dzamija in Banja Luka..:(
Sarajka September 21st, 2005, 01:38 AM ^ It's not the same for me. I have no guilt over Ferhadija Dzamija and it's just anger and frustration and disgust.
With Mostar, there's...not guilt, but just...you know? An uncomfortable feeling that goes with it. So it's a more...solemn thing, for me, as opposed to angry.
yugoboy September 21st, 2005, 01:43 AM Well...I don't know...
I am angry and disgusted by what has happend to both... it is hard to explain mixed fealings.:)
