I went there in January.. didnt see any dolphins... saw 2 sharks instead when I was snorkelling.. hahahaha

there were nearly a hundred dolphins when i was there..it was sooo beautiful..and i was touched & glad to see that they still exist in indonesian seas.. took that photo in june/july of this year..they were following the fisherman's boats :)

i saw few sharks too when i was diving..not particularly huge though..

Is the Manado Airport terminal new? It looks better than say, the current Surabaya's terminal.

Its opened 3 years ago, Its quite new. they are using glassy aerobridges too.

i went to manado just once.. went i was 6 yo.. although my dad is a native manadonese, i don't know how to speak their language.. the only wor i know is pakita.. maybe some native manadonese can help me to improve my knowledge?? ^__^

Im from Davao City,Philippines..Theres a direct flight bet Davao and Manado served by Merpati Airlines.

Although our cities have direct flights, not much is known about Manado here in Davao, i'm guessing its the same thing for you guys in Manado. Its a mystery that flights bet Davao and Manado is still active since it was introduced way back in 1998 huh?

Sudah dua puluh tahun saya biasa datang di pelabuhan Bitung, tapi ito masih kampung kechil.

Saya juga adah kawan baik di Bitung, dia punya nama Nona itu Masye Kumentas, dia kerja di kantor Pilot di pelabuhan Bitung, itu tahun 1980-1984.

If I'm correct sulawesi utara had very close relations with the Dutch when Indonesia was still a colony? Especially the Minahasa people got along with the Dutch, I think alot of them did not want to join Indonesia, but stay a Dutch colony in 1950? Is there still any Dutch influence there like buildings, names, language? And i think this is the largest christian city in Indonesia, correct?

I would say that yes we are still aware of the strong ties we had with the Dutch, because we were influence by them alot. but of course we also have strong ties with Indonesia :)

President to dedicate ring road project in Manado

Manado, North Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to officially dedicate a ring road project in Manado next year, a local official said.

"If everything runs smoothly, the first-stage ring road project covering a length of 25 kilometers will be inaugurated by the President in 2008," Wiliam Kereh, an official of the North Sulawesi provincial housing and infrastructure service, said here on Tuesday.

The first-stage ring road project linking Molas and Bengkol had been completed. The project worth US$14 million was carried by a South Korean contractor, he said.

The second stage of the project would be a 7.7 km-long ring road. The second-stage project was expected to be completed this year despite a land clearing problem.

The third and fourth stages of the project would each cover a 10-km long ring road. (*)

Manado, North Sulawesi province's capital city, would host the World Ocean Summit in 2009, Governor S.H. Sarundajang said Monday.

Sarundajang, who just returned from the Feb. 5-9 Governing Council/Global Minister for Environment Forum in Nairobi, Kenya, said the planned summit was announced by State Minister for the Environment Rachmat Witoelar at the Nairobi forum.

"Many countries have supported the idea as part of their concerns to seek solution over, among others, the illegal fishing and the global warming effect on marine wildlife," he said.

Berhasilnya Walikota Jimmy Rimba Rogi memboyong kembali piagam Adipura ke Kota Manado disambut hangat oleh warga kota.

“Sebelum ini, kita so yakin torang pe upaya untuk menata lingkungan sekitar kita nda akan sia-sia. Buktinya, torang pe kota berhasil terpilih ulang,” ujar Olvie Saluling, Rabu (6/6) dengan dialek Manado, saat di wawancarai wartawan media ini.

Ibu dua anak yang tercatat warga di Kelurahan Bailang kecamatan Bunaken ini, mengaku, langka tegas walikota Jimmy Rimba Rogi untuk menata dan mempercantik kota Manado memberi nilai tambah dan bermakna positif.

“Ini nilai dari sebuah ketegasan yang ditunjukan Pak Imba sejak menjadi Walikota Manado. Dan itu, ternyata tidak sia-sia. Torang so boleh lia, kota Manado sekarang so nyanda semrawut seperti sebelumnya. Masuk ke Pusat kota, skarang so sadiki longgar. Nyanda rupa waktu-waktu lalu,” ujar Olvie menilai kepemimpinan walikota Jimmy Rimba Rogi.

Sitti Gobel (32) warga Sario mengungkapkan rasa puasnya, karena jeri payahnya sekian lama untuk membersihkan lingkungan sekitarnya tak sia-sia.

“Nyanda sia-sia torang pe usaha deng ibu-ibu disekitar sini. Torang tiap hari selalu memperhatikan kebersihan rumah dan di halaman rumah. Apalagi kuntua (lurah) sering kontrol mendadak.

Jadi otomatis lingkungan kami selalu terlihat bersih, dan tak disangka-sangka kota Manado boleh dapa ulang tu Piagam Adipura, kata Sitti Gobel.

Tomohon: City Of Flowers

Tomohon lies in the heart of Minahasa, a narrow 600-kilometer-long narrow peninsula in far northern Sulawesi, a vast and bountiful land of coconut and clove plantations, active volcanoes, high mountain lakes, picturesque villages and ancient burial sites.

The human geography is equally as fascinating, a mix of peoples from Indonesia, mainland Southeast Asia, the Philippines, and the ex-colonial countries of Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands, all comprising the present day Minahasan ethnic group living in the densely populated valleys and plateaus of the interior high above the low-lying capital on the coast.

Northern Sulawesi is blessed with a higher living standard, better health care and education systems than most other regions of Indonesia. The population’s literacy rate is rivalled only by the Minangkabaus of West Sumatra.

Although presently crowded with refugees from the Maluku conflict, this largely homogenous province itself has experienced little of the ethnic unrest that other regions have endured since the fall of Suharto. It even feels like a separate republic, culturally distinct from the rest of Indonesia.

Before the war, because of the Minahasa’s close religious, military and economic ties with the colonial power, the region even became known as the "12th province of the Netherlands" and its KNIL colonial troops were called “Dutch dogs.”

There is still a considerable Eurasian mixture in the population. With their trim rose bushes, blooming sapodilla trees, window sills and porch railings lined with potted plants and neat gardens bright with hibiscus and bougainvillaea, Tomohon houses still reflect European tastes.

Most travelers head out on daytrips from Manado, but a wiser alternative is to make the cool and scenic mountains your base. Tomohon, 25 kilometers from Manado, is a windy, sunny town sitting in a saddle between two active volcanos.
Minibuses leave constantly from Terminal Karombasan in south Manado and climb up the winding road past cafes and hotsprings perching on the side of the mountain. Stop for lunch in one of these bracing roadside restaurants built out over fishponds where you may be offered not only goldfish but kawaok (fried field rats), rintek wuuk (dog), and kelelawar pangang (bat stew), all heavily spiced.

You might want to stick with the goldfish which a kitchen hand will catch, momentarily served up a glowing golden-brown (eat slowly, as ikan mas contain sharp bones). Swill the meal down with the local rice gin, cap tikus.

Tomohon is one of the highest villages of the district and has a wonderfully cool climate, not unlike a European summer. From a number of vantage points the visitor can enjoy surpassing views of Manado. At night, strings of lights outline the city far below.

Known as Kota Kembang (Flower City), every wooden house seems to be draped with orchids and angel trumpets. Household gardens burst with enormous zinnias, dahlias, marigolds and perennial gladiolas. The town’s main road is
lined with flower stalls and planted with strong scented red croton shrubs.

People are friendly to the point of abduction. Tomohon is renowned for its wheelwrights who supply the bendi (horsecarts) of Manado, its streets echo with the sound of horses' hooves. The town is also known for the production of sago wines (tuak saguer) of varying potency. Durian, langsat, mango and other monsoon fruits are in abundance.

Traditional crafts are not. “The Lord gave us cloves," was an old man’s explanation of why there were so few handicrafts in evidence. During the harvest (July-October), one can hardly drive through the streets as they are blanketed with clove buds drying on mats. People’s yards are already overflowing.

Packed oplet (taxi) climb up through plantations and pine forests. Two kilometers out of town, on the road to Tara Tara, are World War II Japanese ammunition storage caves and a traditional mill powered by a fast-running stream at the bottom of a small ravine.

The area’s high concentration of hotsprings reminds one of the mountain towns of West Java. In Kinilow, 650 meters above sea level, just a few kilometers from Tomohon, is the Highland Resort, an ideal point from which to climb Mount Lokon (1,580 meters), the tourist’s premier activity of the area.

With its duck-egg blue crater lake of considerable beauty, the volcano is only one of the countless natural and cultural assets of Minahasa, a taste for which will take more visits than just one to sate.

There is still a considerable Eurasian mixture in the population. With their trim rose bushes, blooming sapodilla trees, window sills and porch railings lined with potted plants and neat gardens bright with hibiscus and bougainvillaea, Tomohon houses still reflect European tastes.

Hallo... I Just got an up date about Manado's infrastructure development in recent months inline with its vision to be Host of WOC 2009 and World Tourism City 2009 :
1. Swiss-belhotel****, downton (beside of Centrum Church) - 168 rooms, 12 fls- Open early 2008
2. Clarion Hotel****, arround 1 km at the same street with Swiss-belhotel, 15 fls? - Open 2008
3. ??? Hotel U/C****, ex RSU Gunung Wenang, on a hill right behind Swiss-belhotel, 9-15 fls
4. ??? Big Hotel***** at Wenang Golf, a street to airport - crossing with outer ring road, with 18 holes golf course. Prepared to be the venue of WOC 2009

Some big hotels have already built in Manado like Ritzy****, (12 fl?), Gran Puri*** (11fl?), Quality**** (7fl?), Sedona Resort(5fls)*****, Santika Resort**** and many other hotels*** beside of exclusive resorts in surrounded area (pls update - I also noticed a new tall hotel nearby swiss-belhotel

It will complete the city with some shopping centers that curently exist on Manado Boulevard area : MegaMall (6fls), Boulevard Mall (mixed used - appartments, ruko, hotels, etc.7-10fls?), Manado Town Square (a duplicated building and concept of Citos Jakarta), IT Center (5fls), MultiMart (6fls?), and Marina Center (the baliho shows a future tall apartments complex, 15+fl?)

City's skyline is jewelled with 5fl+ office buildings like BRI(7fls), BNI (6fls), Danamon (U/C 7fls), Governor office, City Hall, Finance/Tax Office, BCA, BII, etc.

City major just announce the plan to have a Busway in some long routes as a part of city transport.... :)
I just imagine what the city looks like in 2008/2009 since Manado has the combination of amazing nature landscape, good social stability and the skyline developments.

It is an advantage for Manado not having a good/ big port so be able to maintain its natural coastal area (Port/ Industrial area is located at Bitung, 45kms east manado). The most challange is how to manage city lanscaping since the city's area only 150 km2 (including 3 big islands Manado Tua, Bunaken, Bangka?) with more than 500,000 inhabitants. Actualy most of population (probably 70-80%) live in old city teritory (24 km2-city area before expanding in 90's).

I've experienced staying in several major cities in Indonesia, and had lot of business travelling to almost all of province's capital therefore could value the cities development at a glance. And so I'm realy confidence that Manado will be the Great city in North/ East Indonesia.....

It's so grateful to have updates/corrections on data above about Manado'development and recent pictures (The city has no threads in City's Development) since I left this city years ago and just coming for once in a year....

It is Grand Kawanua International City project which include 5-stars hotel, 18-holes golf course, shopping mall, hospital, school, and residential area.

Wow that's great, considering the hill height (up to 50m)... so The PENINSULA hotel will rise higher (up to 100m? on ground level) and becomes as the city's landmark

My colleague told me that Hariss Hotel (owned by the same investor of IT Mall Manado, group of Mitra Adi Perkasa Jkt) soon wiil be constructed at Bahu area, besides of Newmont Minahasa Office, back to back with Quality Hotel?. The building will raise at least 10 fls and has direct view to the sea

Manado should be counted as one of Indonesia's modern skyline city as well as other cities in West Indonesia... I should be grateful having updated pics on these recent development.

Pemilik hotel Swiss Bell, Mercure dan Aston merupakan Pengusaha Manado, sedangkan Peninsula dikabarkan proyek properti group Tiga Raksa.

Swiss Bell semula akan dioperasikan pada TW IV/2007, namun karena berbagai kendala (antara lain ganti operator hotel dari Clarion menjadi Swiss Bell) rencananya akan soft opening pada akhir TW I/08.

Mercure hotel merupakan hotel yang lokasinya di atas Boulevard hotel, tahap I dibangun 100 kamar yang sedianya akan dioperasikan pada saat penyelenggaraan Teknologi Tepat Guna Oktober lalu. Status proyek ini saat ini berhenti sementara, mengingat pemilik ditahan pihak berwajib terkait kewajibannya kepada kontraktor yang membangun Boulevard Mall.

Aston Inn, hotel yang dibangun sendiri oleh pemiliknya. Karena dibangun sendiri progress hotel ini sepertinya lambat sekali. Beberapa kali design hotel berubah terutama penentuan fasilitas yang akan disediakan serta jumlah kamar yang ditawarkan. Saat in design hotel telah memasuki tahap final dan pemilik sudah melakukan pemesanan barang kebutuhan hotel.
Ada yang berminat menjadi GM hotel Aston? yang berminat silahkan menghubungi pemilik untuk selanjutnya diseleksi lebih lanjut.

Peninsula , tidak banyak informasi yang diketahui dari hotel ini. Informasi dari group hotel Peninsula Hongkong juga tidak diperoleh, namun proyek ini benar-benar dikerjakan secara serius. Siang dan malam proyek ini dikerjakan dengan kontraktor dari Jakarta (Wijaya Kusuma Contractor). Kabarnya pemilik hotel ini adalah Group Tiga Raksa Jakarta.

MANADO, Sulutlink. Persidangan kasus kepemilikan tanah reklamasi pantai di kawasan Boulevard Manado yang melibatkan Direktur PT Sulenco Boulevard Indah (SBI), SA alias Sutanto (58), akhirnya berlanjut, Selasa (13/11). Sebelumnya, terdakwa tidak hadir dengan alasan sakit dan sedang dirawat di RS Harapan Kita Jakarta. Big bos SBI tersebut, terpaksa harus duduk di kursi pesakitan dalam sidang Majelis Hakim yang dipimpin Ridwan Damanik SH.

Dalam dakwaan dipersidangan terungkap, bahwa terdakwa memiliki lahan seluas 1 hektar untuk pembangunan Mall di sepanjang jalan Boulevard Manado. Di mana, untuk mewujudkan hal itu, terdakwa meminta bantuan kepada saksi Ir Eduard Ingkiriwang agar mencarikan investor sebagai penyandang dana pada proyek pembangunan Mall, Hotel dan Apartemen di atas lahan tersebut.

Selang beberapa bulan kemudian, oleh saksi Ingkiriwang, terdakwa dipertemukan kepada saksi korban yakni Lauw Kiantara Saputra dan Hendra Wihardja yang pada akhirnya bersedia menjadi investor.

Nah, sebagai jaminan, untuk meyakinkan kedua saksi korban, terdakwa menyediakan tanah seluas 12.520 M2 dan memperlihatkan 4 buah serifikat hak guna bangunan dengan sertifikat HGB nomor 26, sertifikat HGB nomor 27, sertifikat HGB nomor 28 dan sertifikat HGB nomor 29 Sario Tumpaan atas nama PT Sulenco Boulevard Indah yang berkedudukan di jalan Samratulangi II No 116 Kelurahan Tanjung Batu.

Kemudian, terdakwa meyakinkan kepada kedua saksi korban agar menitipkan saja barang berupa 4 sertifikat itu kepada notaris Oky Annete Kahimpong SH (terdakwa diajukan dalam berkas tersendiri) dengan dibuatkan akte perjanjian nomor 8 tertanggal 17 juli 2004. Selama proyek pembangunan itu dilaksanakan, dana yang telah dikeluarkan oleh kedua saksi korban mencapai sekitar Rp 102.171.867.000 ditambah dengan $200.000 (dua ratus ribu dollar Singapura) di mana keseluruhan dana pembangunan itu diserahkan kepada terdakwa selaku direktur PT Sulenco dan saksi Leni Rompis (dalam berkas tersendiri) Ir Eduardo Ingkiriwang selaku pihak keempat sekaligus kontraktor dalam pembangunan itu.

Selanjutnya, pada tanggal 12 november 2004, atas permintaan terdakwa, agar saksi Oky Anneke Kohimpong SH menyerahkan 4 sertifikat itu kepada BPN untuk dipisahkan. Disini persoalan berkembang. Setelah 4 buah sertifikat itu berada di BPN, terdakwa bukan melakukan pemisahan akan tetapi melakukan penggabungan dan terdakwa menyuruh saksi Angs Oei Hong untuk mengambilnya di BPN.

Lalu terdakwa bersama dengan saksi Leny Rompis mengagunkan/menjaminkan dua sertifikat nomor 91/sisa dari penggabungan sertifikat HGB sebelumnya yaitu sertifikat nomor, 26, 27, 28, 29 dan 90, dan sertifikat HGB no 94 itu di PT Bank NISP Jakarta untuk memperoleh kucuran dana sekitar Rp 130.000.000.000. Pada akhir tahun 2006, baru saksi korban mengetahui dari penjelasan notaries Oky Annete Kahimpong, di mana sertifikat itu telah digabung dan diagunkan terdakwa di Bank NISP Jakarta. Akibatnya, kedua saksi korban mengalami kerugian sekitar Rp 102 miliar ditambah dengan $200000 dollar Singapura.

Sebelumnya, antara majelis hakim, jaksa dan kuasa hukum terdakwa, terjadi silang pendapat dan tarik-menarik bahkan perdebatan soal sakit terdakwa.

Mall kedua yang beroperasi setelah Mega Mall, dibangun pada tahun 2004 dan resmi beroperasi pada Juli 2006. Luas Mall keseluruhan adalah 34.165 m2 dengan luas areal komersial 26.180 m2.

Pintu Gerbang Ekonomi Manado adalah kota Bitung, seluruh aktivitas ekonomi bermula dari kota ini mengingat Bitung merupakan kota Pelabuhan di provinsi Sulawesi Utara.

Selain Bunaken, Bitung juga menawarkan hot spot diving yang tidak kalah menariknya. Ada banyak resort-resort yang menawarkan paket diving di Pulau Lembeh.

Patung Yesus Memberkati terletak kawasan perumahan Citraland Manado, patung tersebut terletak di atas bukit Royal Highland setinggi 32 m dari jalan utama membuat monumen tersebut menjadi sangat artistik dan indah.
Keberadaan Monumen Tuhan Yesus Memberkati diharapkan nantinya akan menjadikan kota Manado semakin indah dan mempesona serta selalu mengingatkan umat manusia agar selalu mengucap syukur atas kasih, penyertaaan dan berkat yang Tuhan telah berikan.

Patung Yesus Memberkati diperkirakan menjadi patung kedua tertinggi sesudah patung Tuhan Yesus Christ The Redeemer di Corcovado Rio De Janeiro.

Patung ini akan terletak di puncak bukit yang paling strategis di kawasan CitraLand Winangun. Patung Tuhan Yesus akan menghadap kota Manado dan pemandangan pantai serta pulau Manado Tua. Patung yang akan dibuat langsung oleh Ciputra ini akan dibangun setinggi 50 meter yang terdiri dari 20 meter landasan pedestal patung dan badan patung setinggi 30 meter. Patung Tuhan Yesus ini akan berdiri di ketinggian 192 meter dari lokasi CitraLand dan total 242 meter di atas muka laut kota Manado.
''Diharapkan dengan demikian banyak orang dapat menikmati suasana rohani di lokasi patung dan memberikan inspirasi kepada setiap pengunjung tentang kehadiran Tuhan Yesus menjadi manusia seperti kita untuk memperlihatkan cinta kasih Tuhan yang luar biasa,'' ujar Ciputra.
Mengelilingi patung Tuhan Yesus Memberkati, akan diletakkan empat buah patung dengan masing-masing sebuah prasasti yang menggambarkan penderitaan rakyat Manado selama Perang Dunia II. Dengan meletakkan ke empat patung ini di kaki patung Tuhan Yesus terdapat pesan untuk setiap orang yang dalam penderitaan agar datang kepada Tuhan yesus untuk mendapatkan kelegaan.

Setiap patung disertai dengan sebuah lempengan beton prasasti dengan ukuran 1,4 m x 1,4 m sebagai emblem yang masing-masing memiliki gambar tulisan 1942-1945, lambang burung manguni yang juga menjadi lambang kota Manado, gambar pohon kelapa dan lambang kerajaan asing. Kehadiran prasasti yang berbentuk emblem ini menunjukkan bahwa ke empat patung ini memang memiliki pesan dengan nilai historis.

Ke empat patung tersebut bukan saja mampu menggambarkan dengan tepat apa yang terjadi selama masa Perang Dunia II, tetapi juga menggambarkan yang telah terjadi di masa kecil Ciputra. Gambaran pedagang yang menderita adalah cocok dengan gambar sosok ayah Ciputra yang ditangkap oleh penjajah pada 1944 di Bumbulan dan dibawa ke Manado. Ayah Ciputra kemudian mati di penjara Manado. Sampai saat ini Ciputra tidak mengetahui letak kuburan ayahnya.

Patung-patung ini dibuat dari dua bongkah batu solid yang diambil dari sungai Ciliwung Bogor. Masing-masing patung diperkirakan beratnya 2 ton dan berukuran kurang lebih 1 m3. ke empat ini dibuat oleh Bernard Los di Bogor. Namun rencana untuk mendirikan monument bagi rakyat Manado ini tidak terlaksana karena perubahan politik pada 1949. Bernard Los sendiri kembali ke Belanda sejak 1951 dan meninggalkan surat kuasa kepada sahabatnya untuk mengurus patung-patung itu. Setelah terabaikan selama 55 tahun, Ciputra membelinya dan akan meletakkan di kaki patung Tuhan Yesus di CitraLand Manado.

Selama masa penyusunan konsep dan perencanaan patung, Ciputra berdoa terus-menerus dan memohon agar Tuhan Yesus sendiri memberikan inspirasi kepadanya. Setelah melalui pergumulan dan perenungan akhirnya Ciputra memutuskan apa yang menjadi konsep utama dari patung dan akan dituliskan dalam prasasti yakni judul patung 'Tuhan Yesus Memberkati', sejumlah firman Tuhan dan motto orang Sulawesi Utara yakni Sitou Timou Tumou Tou.

Manado sudah jauh berubah,
2005 pertama saya berkunjung ke kota ini, kota yang sangat tidak teratur
kaki lima ada di mana-mana begitu juga sampahnya. Dengan pemimpin daerah yang punya visi dan komitmen kuat, manado bisa berubah. hal yang dulu dipandang orang sebagai hal yang mustahil.

Palembang juga jauh berubah, sejak Pon 2004 mereka memperoleh momentum untuk melakukan percepatan pembangunan.

Manado mendapat momentum dengan diselenggarakannya WOS/WOS pada tahun 2009, infrastruktur mulai dibenahi untuk menyambut event tersebut.

mudah-mudahan semua pemimpin daerah bisa membangun daerahnya denga sungguh-sunguh, tidak hanya sibu korupsi untuk mengembalikan modal pilkada :bash:
