TEHRAN (AFP) - Iranian carmaker Iran Khodro unveiled its new homegrown version of the popular French Peugeot 206, hoping the tweaked model will boost its position as the Middle East's biggest auto producer.
In a joint project with Peugeot costing 830 billion rials (92 million dollars), designers have transformed the car from being a compact hatchback to a saloon offering more luggage space. The tweaked car, unveiled Wednesday, is called the "Aryan".
Iran Khodro's managing director, Manouchehr Manteqi, said the company was targeting the car at the booming domestic market and 39 foreign markets -- mainly the Middle and Far East, North Africa and Central Asia.
Production is set to start in January 2006, with output eventually reaching 120,000 units per year. France's Peugeot already dominates the Iranian market with the 405 and 206 models, as well as engine designs for other models.

source26 September 23rd, 2005, 02:46 PM But Iran with oil money can surely by now have developed its own car!
also its a vast country so cars are needed - I think Iran instead of nukes could develop its own brand of cars it could be better also for its own economy..!
Gilgamesh September 23rd, 2005, 03:19 PM But Iran with oil money can surely by now have developed its own car!
Well this isn't the first car, haven't you heard about The Paykan? ;)
Shohad September 23rd, 2005, 03:26 PM Those cars are cool. I heard that education level in Iran is very high in some places so such fine engineering is not a surprise.
I read that one of the first (or the first) Iranian cars was a joint Iranian-Israeli project (but it wasn’t governmental).
Shohad September 23rd, 2005, 03:41 PM Aha! I found a bit of info! Somewhere in the 60s the Israeli (British owned) car manufacturer “autocars” built an assembly line in Iran which made small, strange and ugly jeeps that were called pony\dragon. They were mostly intended for farmers in the 3rd world. Almost 20 were produced and exported to Greece, turkey and Ethiopia!!!
http://www.ynet.co.il/articles/0,7340,L-3083381,00.html its in hebrew, but just for you to know that it isn't my imagination.
source26 September 23rd, 2005, 06:31 PM that article is so funny!
yes well soon coming to israel will be chinese cars flooding the market supposedly very cheap.. they probably will flood all asia like in textiles, electronics etc..
now if we could only expost our own cars from asia.. that would be great
even funnier article I found making fun of the Pakyan ..
DASHBOARD: Iran to dump Paykan
May 5, 2005
Foreign models
Four of 10 Iranian motorists drive a car called the Paykan. The Iranian government would like to drop that number to zero.
A news service item about Iran forcing the end of production of the car described it as "the gas-guzzling Paykan."
The Paykan, which means arrow in Farsi, has been built in Iran since 1967. But the Iranian government wants to make breathing easier for the 15 million residents of Tehran, described as one of the most polluted cities in the world, and will scrap as many as 1.4 million Paykans. The Paykan gets about 13.8 miles per gallon.
"A Paykan uses as much gasoline as a Lamborghini," Mehdi Hashemi Rafsanjani, head of the Iranian Fuel Conservation Organization, told Bloomberg. "We have a three-year plan to take them out of the streets."
A quick Web search found that owners have a love-hate relationship with the car despite its popularity. For one thing, as you can tell from the picture it may suck up gas like a Lamborghini, but it sure doesn't look like one.
And apparently the Paykan has some reliability problems. A Web site lists a long list of Paykan jokes. If these jokes look familiar, just sub Yugo or any other clunker's name for Paykan. Variations of these jokes have been told about American cars.
QUESTION: What is found on the last 2 pages of every Paykan owner's manual?
ANSWER: The bus schedule.
Q: What did the auto parts counterman say when the customer said "I'll take a set of wiper blades for my Paykan"?
A. Sounds like a fair trade to me.
Q. Why do Paykans come with heated rear windows?
A. To keep your hands warm while you're pushing them.
Q. Why don't Paykans sustain much damage in a front-end collision?
A. The tow truck takes most of the impact.
Q. What do you call Paykan passengers?
A. Shock absorbers.

So you're Iranian? :)
LtBk September 24th, 2005, 01:37 AM About time i say. The Iranian government should allow foreign car companies to invest and operate in Iran. At the same time, the Iranian government should try to stop the bad driving habits in that country.
Shohad September 24th, 2005, 08:08 AM ^^ At the same time, the Iranian government should step down and let the people choose another one.
