In the tradition of "Best of Britain", "Best of the US" and "Marvels of Sri Lanka" here is "Australia All Over" dedicated to the cities and the landscapes of the great southern land.

PLEASE could we restrict photos to one per post so that its not prohibitively huge for dail-up uses (like me).

Wallaman Falls

At 305 metres, Wallaman Falls on Stony Creek is the tallest clear drop waterfall in Australia, located 48km west of Ingham (which is 110km north of Townsville) in North Queensland. Only the spire of Q1 is taller than this magnificent natural skyscraper.

Ball's Pyramid
The mighty Ball's Pyramid, at about 550m, taller than any skyscraper on Earth, rears out the ocean near Lord Howe Island, off the east coast of Australia.

PLEASE could we restrict photos to one per post so that its not prohibitively huge for dail-up uses (like me). My intention was for this NOT to be just a photo spam of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide & Perth. I was imagining people would post exceptional or slightly different photos of Australia's cities or photos of one of Australia's lesser known features, whether they be natural or man made - aspects of Australia that are less well known, not just lots of postcard shots of Melbourne. Your 4th one would have been ideal dan (sorry to single you out).

Anyway angry rant over. I suppose once I create a thread I can't really control what direction it should take. Sorry.

Parkes Radio Telescope

In the middle of a sheep paddock in country New South Wales, this radio telescope received the pictures from Apollo 11 during the first moon landing, and was made famous by the movie "The Dish".

The second largest monolith in the world (after less dramatically-shaped Mt Augustus in Western Australia) Uluru is a magnetic rock rising 340m above the desert plain (higher than any Australian building).
It is 9.4 kms in circumference, and extends 2.5 km underground. Sacred to local indigenous people.

Mt Olga, the highest of the 36 dome rocks of the Kata Tjuta group 32 kms to the west, is 500m high. The Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is World Heritage listed:source Australian Govt., Dept of Environment and Heritage

The Bungle Bungle Ranges in Purnululu National Park were almost unknown to Europeans less than 25 years ago. They are in West Australia 's Kimberley Region. The hundreds of domes are 300m high - a 'forest' of natural stone skyscrapers - and the 'beehive' effect is orange silica in sandstone, banded by black lichen.

They are among my Outback favourites, although I have only flown over them (land is a long, long 4WD trek, staying at cattle stations). There is another somewhat similar but almost unknown formation in the Northern Territory, near the Gulf of Carpenteria, known as the 'Lost City.' That is on private pastoral land, and seldom visited. This is the Bungle Bungles:

For purposes of comparison with Uluru (posted several below) this is the world's largest monolith (you know we love that 'world's largest' stuff). Mt Augustus in Western Australia is 2-1/2 times the size of Uluru, but looks more like a hill range. It is 858m high, and the central ridge is 8km long. This tourist-type shot is in wildflower season.

Another 'Red Centre' photo - this time several of the 36 domes of the Kata Tjuta group 32 miles west of Uluru (Ayers Rock); the tallest of these domes, Mt Olga is actually 548m, taller than the roof of the world's tallest buildings. A gorge leads into a central valley. The name means 'many heads' in the Pjitjatjanjara language.

This photo was taken by a visitor Ralf Maerz I believe:

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b50/MrMukherjee/katatjuta1.jpg

and another European visitor doing his own thang with a clam-like pebble out there:

The Aquashell, a 100-tonne barge with sound shell by Phillip Cox, hosts free concerts at the foot of Sydney's skyline from Cockle Bay in Darling Harbour and other locations. Many famous artists- rock, jazz, classical, Latin and Opera have performed on it. Shown here setting up, with the Pyrmont swing bridge opened behind it ...

The Melbourne-based Enivimission company (listed. 2001) proposed a 1000m solar tower near Buronga, near Wentorth in far Western NSW. The proposal received support from the Federal and NSW governments as one of national importance.

This awesome animated video shows a visit to a proposed viewing tower at the top of the initially-plannned tower, and a comparison to other tall structures. 6.7mb ..give it a moment to load ...

http://www.enviromission.com.au/project/video/video.htm

UPDATE; in fact the scale of the first stage of the project was downgraded to a 50MW station this month, but the video is still awesome viewing of a future prospect, the way oil prices are moving. This is a render, I think of the first stage...expected to start next year
