Shanghai port is the world's largest in terms of throughput volume in 2004/2005.

In 2004, Shanghai port surpassed Rotterdam to be the new No.1 port of the world. Actually, Singapore has a slightly larger figure than Shanghai in 2004, but it's said that the criterion of Singapore is not the same as Shanghai & Rotterdam and Shanghai is No.1 actually.

But it doesn't matter. In 2005, Shanghai will definitely be No.1 by any criterions. Till now in 2005, Shanghai port has been No.1 of the world in terms of throughput volume and still enlarging the edge.

In 2004, Shanghai is the 3rd largest container port of the world, too.

@JorisGoedhart

That is a near medieval picture of the Rotterdam plans fot the 2nd Maasvlakte. There are far better artist impressions of that.

Besides that, Shanghai is building more in one year, than Rotterdam has done in 10 years!! :)

@Yangtze

Good of you to start a thread for Shanghgai. I missed it, but I thought it should be a Chinese person to have responsebility to provide info on this amazing port!

Ié read about that Yangshan Port Development a few months ago. It will be huge and very large. With 36 places for a new generation of Megacontainerships which will only go between Shanghai and a few other cities(Rotterdam).

Rotterdam have a limit (space)

@Manu

Why not??

The sea is an unlimited source of space. There have been studies for artificial island off the rotterdam coast. With the 2nd Maasvlakte, Rotterdam can go on for the next 30 years or so. By that time, techniques have also changed. So theres no limit whatsoever. The only limits can be found in Dutch politics and public opinion. Its rather weird to say to a Dutchman that there are expansion limits since we have a thousand years knowledge of claimnig land from the sea.

Kobe never was the world's no 1 port.
Rotterdam...who cares?
It was the world's biggest port for decades!
It still is on the same level as Singapore and Shanghai, the differences aren't that big.
And btw, Shanghai's deep water port is further from the city than Antwerp, Europe's 2nd port is from Rotterdam. Together, Rotterdam and Antwerp are still the world's no 1 port complex.

Have fun being banned... :wave:

In terms on volume, number of containers.. Hongkong is the biggest and the busiest port in the world. and rotterdam is the most advanced and sophisticated port in the world.

Rotterdam doesn't mind that it isn't the biggest port in the world anymore. It doesn't have to compete with Shanghai and Hong Kong etc.
